has that little bit of a gray area where we

if it were me, I would just have it for
very binary calls offsides, ball over the line, ball out

mostly would do, then you go back and look at

There aren't very many teams that haven't had some sort
of complaint along the way, right right, I think every

It's a subjective thing. It's a there's a human element,
a human being is making subjective calls in every sport

because with the technology, the technology comes into play, we

been sensational and the games have been awesome, even I

between Switzerland and Columbia had incredible drama, incredible opportunities to score,

me why center backs who fired the ball fifty yards
over a crossbar like their Jason Myers from forty yards
out are taking PK. But that's that's a coach's decision
and a way they go. But you know, both those

biggest shots yesterday, they both missed in their previous pks

you lose. In extras, two things. First of all, thank
you for Ellie. It's great stuff. Let's get to the baseball.
The baseball is this so the rules that they have
who can pitch started inning, not started aning all that.
I understand there's a lot of people frustrated with that.

I'm going to give the team the benefit of the doubt.
They do it for a reason. They study these things.
They have whatever metrics in front of them that makes sense, right,
So they have those rules. The place you can't really
give them benefit of the doubt because it's their true decision,
a very subjective decision, Like the numbers are one thing,

but the subjective decision is to go with six starters
and to weaken your bullpen. Now, your billpen's already been
weakened because you're missing a couple of guys anyway, including
Matt Brash. But your bullpen's shorthanded now, so you have
guys in leverage situations that shouldn't be there. But what
you can't have is a base running blunder like you had.

You just you cannot have that by a major league player. Hell,
you can't have that. Well, let's even take a step back.
I mean, we've spent so much time talking about youth
sports the last couple of days and how expensive it is.
If you're playing travel baseball as a fourteen year old
and you make that player, coach is going to kill you.

And you're probably not making that play because it's been
drilled into your head. So you have that happen and
then you lose. But but here's the thing, where's my guy,
Joe Shean? Because Brian was bad again yesterday on the road. Huh,

in Seattle, Like we're really done in Seattle. Like they're

taking stuff down. Waterfront's going away, well, the viewing areas
and the waterfront and all that are. Even though we
have quarterfinal action and semi finals, it's all coming down.
But I was thinking today about just what it meant
to our city. And when I say our city, I'm
talking about the region, but certainly the city of Seattle specifically.

You are now a homeowner in Seattle. I am. You know,
we grew up in this area, grew up and I
grew up in Seattle. I was born on Capitol Hill,
I was I went to school on First Hill. You
went to school at Blanchett. Yep. This was our city,
you know for a long time, I, like many of

us that are from here. I have this great community
pride for the city of Seattle.

I do as well.

I think a lot of us may have lost it
for a while. And you know, if I just go
back in time a little bit, when when I was
done with college, came back worked here for six seven
years ish I guess seven years that I worked here
before we moved to Tri Cities, and then we moved
to Salt Lake City, and then we moved to Portland

slash Vancouver, Washington before coming home, and in the back of
my mind, I always wanted to do just that. I
wanted to come back home to this area. Now Maple
Valley ended up being our home. But it's this area,
it's hugest Sound, It's it's our town. But Seattle has
always held a special place for me because I grew

up in the city. I took the bus to school,
I took a metro bus, the nineteen bus to school.
I used to take the number two bus back in
the day up on Queen Anne. I loved the city
and I had great pride for it. When I lived
in places like Salt Lake and especially Portland. Would drive
people nuts because I talk so glowingly about our city

and the city of Seattle and I think a lot
of us feel and have felt that same way. I
think it's also safe to say a lot of us
have lost that feeling over the last few years. We
have become a city that has become more concerned with
those who hurt the city. We have become more concerned

(21:25):
with those who hurt the city's reputation, whether it be
through crime, drug use, or other things, than the people
that actually make a difference in this city, small business
owners or even large businesses based here. We've catered to
the needs of those that hurt as opposed to those
that help. And somewhere along the way, and it's not

just the current mayor, it's others along the way in
city council and other mayors and others in leadership, Somewhere
along the way, we've lost what Seattle was. There's no
more beautiful place in my mind in this country than
this then Seattle and the surrounding area where you can
look out and see Elliott Bay. You can look to

the west and see the Olympic Mountains, you look to
the east and see the Cascade Mountains. You look to
the south and you see Mount Rainier staring you down
the face and saying here I am. We have such
a unique geographic setup. Then we have things now that
you hear, the Seattle freeze exists. People don't like each other,
they don't want to talk to each other. That wasn't

always the case. I don't even know if it still
is the case. But this city somewhere along the way
lost itself. It lost its way. We lost its way.
All of us are culpable in some ways. But over
the last few weeks that changed. Sports changed it, specifically

(22:48):
soccer and the World Cup changed that. It wasn't just
five hundred and eighty thousand people coming downtown from out
of this area. The vast majority are from here that
were there, marching, celebrating, eating, drinking, singing. They were from

(23:09):
here and they were joined at the hip, even if
you were wearing a different colored jersey. We saw that
on Monday, Andrews and I visibly saw that Monday and
Jimmy's on first three, Belgium fans hanging out, drinking beers,
having a good time at Jimmy's with all us fans.
It was awesome and we had that for a few weeks.

(23:30):
They talk about what's next. The FIFA Women's World Cup
one hundred percent in. That would be great. It won't
be on this scale. Sorry, it just won't be the
twenty thirty one Men's Rugby World Cup. Frankly, who cares.
Maybe there'll be people coming here, it will be a
nothing burger. Now, the NFL Draft, I think that's the

closest we could probably come for two days, three days,
I guess exactly, But we could. That would be fun,
and it wouldn't have been a global stage. Mel We're never
going to have this again in our lifetime. But here's
the thing enters. The most important thing that needs in
my mind, my opinion, the most important thing that needs

to come out of the last three weeks here in
this city is that we can be great again. We
can do this again. We can be a city that
we're all proud of again, and we can all get
along again. Don't let the World Cup come and go
without any positive silver linings after effects, right, Don't let
it just come and go. Don't let the World Cup

and what we just experienced be wasted. And I'm looking
in the mirror at myself as well. All of us
need to be that way. All of us need to
be better and understand why this is a great city.
I mean right now. For years and years the baseball
team had to fight a perception of this city for
whatever reason, Marine Layer, losing attitude, whatever it was. The

people would come here and go, God, we had got ballpark.
It's on the waterfront. You can see the city.

Fans love you.

It's gorgeous. The fans love you. The hockey team is
going through what the baseball team did. They're going through
that right now. Today doesn't help. We've got morons that
are on the fringe media in our town that like
to jump on and go with that narrative instead of same.
Wait a second, I'm at the rink every day. It's
the best facility in town. I live in this town.
It's an incredible atmosphere, climate Pledgerina remarkable. In the shadow

of the space needle overlooking Elliott Bay with a window
that open, we don't. And I use that just as
one small example. We do not focus in on the
positives our own city ever, but we did the last
three weeks and it was flippin' awesome. We need to
remember what it was like over the last three weeks.
And as I look down today and I see the

cranes and I see stuff getting taken down. That's fine.
Those structures as they come down, good Don't let the
good will. Don't let all the positivity of the last
few weeks come down with the bro barge and the
big screens and the fences around Loomenfield. Don't let that

come down to I don't know how it has to happen.
We don't have it feels like enough good leadership in
this town. But I think almost every city would probably
say that because nobody likes their local politicians. That's the
way it is the reality. But we need to find
a way to remember what these last few weeks were like.
Our waterfront is gorgeous. Walk along the waterfront, go to

Pike Place Market, take a hike up mount Side, whatever
it is, enjoy and realize why this is a great area.
And oh, by the way, we showed the entire planet
what a great sports town we are. We put on
display what a great sports town. And I'm not just
talking sixty thousand people in the stadium. What's a great
sports town again, five hundred thousand people in a city,

on a waterfront, at a bar, at a viewing party,

land the team. That's also according to Bloomberg News is
co reporting on this story. Here's who it is. It's
a group called the Las Vegas Jacks. It includes Basketball
Hall of Famer Jerry Colangelo, former Phoenix Suns owner, executive
Right Horizon Sports and Experiences founder David Levy in Prime

Capital Financial chair and managing partner Scott Colangelo. Must be Oh,
that's right, that's his Sun. Anyway, this group again, they're
called the Las Vegas Jacks. They reportedly have secured eight
billion dollars and they are now looking to also perhaps
bid on an expansion franchise in Las Vegas. Currently, there's

also a plan for Vegas gold Knights owner Bill Fully
to bid on the expansion team in Vegas as well
the new one. The Las Vegas Jacks did not say
specifically whether they intend to construct a new arena or
if land has been acquired, but they say they quote
plan to play at Tea Mobile arena while their new

home is being built. So that does tell you they
want to build a building. Yeah, well, T mobile arena
is kind of run by bill fully, which is similar
with the situation is here, right, eight billion dollars, I
believe is about a billion more than what people are
throwing around like, you know, like billions, like it's nothing.
Well somewhere between six and ten billion. Yeah, well me again,

emphasize it's a billion, b billion dollars. The difference between six, seven,
eight nine is significant. We all know that.

now part of their organization, part of their ownership group
for the Kraken and obviously will be part of what
they're doing with the NBA. The second that happened her
in her thirty billion dollar portfolio. Some say it's a

kind of ended any in my mind, in many many
people's minds, that ended any thought that there's going to
be a competing bid here. It would have been hard anyway,
because with one roof running the building and effectively owning
the building, and you have to go through them, you

just don't want to do that as a secondary owner,
a secondary tenant. But how does it affect Seattle. Well,
here's what we know about the NBA. The NBA the
one thing I think we all agree upon, Adam Silver specifically,
they don't move very fast, and it always feels to
me like if they can delay something, or procrastinate on

something or put it on the back burner, or they
have to do their due diligence, then they will. They've
made no bones about the fact that they want to
get that European League up and going. At the same time,
we're talking about having a deadline of basically by September
October November having to announce expansion. If we're going to

begin playing twenty eight twenty nine. As Silver said, well,
now if you have the water's muddied in Vegas, what
does that do here? Does that mean that we're going
to put expansion off for another year while we expand,
while we explore all the expansion bids. Is this something
they can do over the next two months. It doesn't
feel like they move at a fast enough pace to
do that. My concern with the Vegas situation is this

Bill Foley perfect. Let them bring a team there, maybe,
especially if they suck and people, Oh, it's not that
easy to have an expansion team, Bill, unlike your hockey team.
But Bill Foley, easy turnkey, Samantha Hallway easy turnkey with
Milinda French Gates, done deal. But another team, another group

bidding on it. I would say my worry scale is
somewhere around a three or a four, but it's not
a zero in terms of making this a delay. I
don't like the water's being muddied. I don't like the
opportunity or the thought that they're going to have the
opportunity of the NBA to say, well, we're going to
have to put a little hold on this for a minute.

Because we got to we got to check out and
see if we want to bring the Calandels back into
the NBA. Now. I don't think at one time they were.
Jerry Colange was very powerful man in basketball in this country.
I don't know if he still is. Kind of tend
to doubt it. He's a basketball Hall of Famer. They
can't carry some weight, probably not what it used to.
Just let's just kind of keep an eye on what's
going on in Vegas. I know you could come in

I look, this has been one of those things where
like I feel like that seventh round developmental NFL prospect
that like, yeah, the progress is there, but it but
it isn't. At the same time, we've we've still we've
still got we've still got quite a few boxs, and
I'm trying. I'm trying, but I just can't seem to.

Uh, I don't know.

I feel like I'm on the roster bubble when it

go to Animal City Spectrum all the time. We guy,

a story on Jackson Smith and jigbut and and the

quote was there's a lot of work left to be done.
Was he not just the offensive player of the year?
What work does this guy have to do?

could have made like that. That's just the way that
you know, the elite athletes are wired different than every

chase after and look, the season he had was fantastic,
was one of the best ever.

What are you gonna do for an encore?

You know, I won't dive into all the numbers because
you can check out the article and everyone expect, but
it's interesting what history suggests for all the other receivers
that got to over seventeen hundred and fifty receiving yards
of the season, what they did the next year. It's
interesting looking at that dynamic in terms of what an
encore has typically looked like coming off a season, like.

Speaker 1 (40:53):
Is there is there an expected drop off? I again,
we want people to read the story, but is there
an expected drop off or not?

Speaker 5 (41:00):
Look, I'm gonna be really surprised if he gets to
that total. Again, just there's there's a lot of different
variables at play there.

Speaker 4 (41:08):
But there's never been a receiver.

Speaker 5 (41:10):
I mean, there's been one guy, Tyreek Hill head back
to back seasons of seventeen hundred yards with the Dolphins,
not that long ago, only a few years ago, So
you can get there. It is possible, But man, that
seven of the other eight nobody got above fourteen fifty
and that's still a really, really good season. It's just

(41:32):
I think when you consider that the fact that I'm
expecting Rashid shihe it is gonna be a lot more productive.
You're hoping you're gonna have a healthy Tory Horton back
for the entire season, and he've got a j Barner.
I mean, I feel like there's gonna be more distribution
in the passing game than we saw most of last year.
That isn't just say that Jaysen Is is still gonna
be the one that's getting the bulk of the targets,

(41:53):
but I would expect that he's gonna have a little
smaller share.

Speaker 4 (41:55):
That's gonna impact his numbers overall.

Speaker 1 (41:58):
Well. And I guess my question would be, so he
brought up the injuries to other guys and so forth,
was his seventeen hundred yards? Was that out of necessity?
Do you think?

Speaker 5 (42:11):
I think there's there's something to that In terms of
especially the I would actually argue, you know, the first
half of the season where he really was going off,
even though they had Tory Horton making some numbers. I mean,
Cooper Cup's first half was very underwhelming.

Speaker 4 (42:26):
Statistics wise, and you.

Speaker 5 (42:28):
Know, they just felt like some of it was Sam Darnold, like, Hey,
this is the guy that's getting the job done. I'm
just gonna keep force feeding him. And some of it
was like, hey, the dude's wide open. Well, like the
teams kept trying to play him one on one and
that just was not working. And then teams finally started
to adapt a little bit. But then he started to
see more production from Cooper Cup.

Speaker 4 (42:49):
You know, Rashichihi didn't.

Speaker 5 (42:50):
Do a lot as a receiver in his half a
season in Seattle, but just his presence there, I think
that helped open things up a little bit for JSN
in the second half.

Speaker 4 (42:59):
But I think early on a lot of it was necessity.

Speaker 5 (43:02):
Just and the fact that, you know, Sam Darneld just
for whatever reason, that chemistry just clicked. You don't see
that very often with qbs and receivers when they first
start working together, it usually takes a lot of time
and a lot of reps. These two guys like they
just started throwing to each other and say, hey, like,
we've been living together for the last ten years apparently
because we like we have telegraphic and telepathic relationship going

(43:26):
on here. And scary thing is I thought they looked
even better in mini camp and OTAs this summer.

Speaker 4 (43:31):
Yet to remember it's just their second year together.

Speaker 1 (43:33):
Well, I was gonna say, andrews All, get asking this
question because I don't I ask about the the injuries
and as. Who was the second leading receiver for the
Seahawks last season in terms of receptions?

Speaker 2 (43:44):
M Okay, I'm gonna say, Oh, it's a tough one.
Is because I know it's gonna be a trick question here.
I'm saying a J.

Speaker 1 (43:54):
Barner, good job. Yes, fifty two receptions, five hundred and
nineteen yards. Cup was a third second leading receiver in
terms of yard with five ninety three. But Cormyn, I
think that's the key what you just said. Like JSN,
I think had to have the year he had in
a lot of ways. And no disrespect to AJ Barner,
I mean he had a really solid year, but Cup
wasn't that productive forty seven catches and then you drop

(44:16):
way down because Rashichi heat had fifteen, but he wasn't
here right until the end of the season. Betfactive after
the trade deadline, and then it's you know, thirteen from
Horton Cody White had three. I mean, they didn't get
a lot of production out of that wide receiver position.
Outside of JSN.

Speaker 5 (44:33):
They did, and it didn't really match up with the
talent that they had at their position either.

Speaker 4 (44:38):
Though.

Speaker 5 (44:38):
Tory Horton made the most of his thirteen catches, five
of them being touchdowns and he was really coming on
and unfortunately before that shin injury ended up costing him
the entire second half and the playoffs. And I think
you are going to see a totally different Rashid Shaheed.

We've already seen another practice.

Speaker 5 (44:55):
Field just having the time to build that chemistry with
Sam Darnold.

Speaker 4 (45:00):
That's how it usually goes.

Speaker 5 (45:01):
Isn't like Jasn We're just like, oh, hey, like did
we just become friends?

Speaker 4 (45:06):
Like step brothers here?

Speaker 5 (45:07):
Like we're rolling right off the bat here. You know,
it doesn't typically work that way. So I expect Shaheed
is going to be a lot more productive. And I
think Brian Fleury's offense is gonna be very similar to
what kubiak ran and Shaheed had a lot of success
in that system. So I don't think that Jaysn is
going to have to shoulder so much at a load,

(45:27):
and that's not to say he's not gonna have a
great season.

I just I think it's gonna be.

Speaker 5 (45:31):
You know, it's gonna be a challenge to get back
to that seventeen hundred plus yard mark just because of
the other players that they have.

Corman, Here's the thing that I think is you and
I will have a lot of discussions, you know, the
week before training camp and then through training camp. I
think one of the storylines that you're gonna hear around
the league is wow, I mean, look at the improvement
of the Rams, you know, and then the forty nine
ers added a couple of big weapons as well. I
think what you're telling us and what I've thought all along,
like the Seahawks just by getting healthy Tory Horton, a

(46:02):
Rashid Shihed for the entire season to go with JSN,
Cooper Cup now more comfortable in the offense. You just
said it, the numbers didn't reflect the talent. But now
if we look at all those those four guys, your
top four guys receiving wise, there could be some big
numbers being put up and it won't include seventeen from
seventeen hundred from JSN.

Speaker 5 (46:24):
Yeah exactly, And I think I think you can look
at Seattle's entire roster, just the continuity that they've got.
I understand the Rams went out and made the moves
that they did, they're certainly better for it. And the
forty nine ers the moves they made, and some of
the injured players they've got coming back, like the forty
nine ers are going to be back at full strength.
So both those teams are gonna be gunning for Seattle

(46:45):
looking to get back to the top of the division.

Speaker 4 (46:46):
But Seahwks have a lot of They just won a
Super Bowl.

Speaker 5 (46:50):
With one of the youngest rosters in the NFL, like,
so many of these players are going to be better
this year.

And then you add in somebody. I mean, I'm very
bullish on Riley.

I think Riley Mills, now fully healthy, got a little
bit of experience in the playoffs, we saw the Super
Bowl sack.

I just have a feeling that he's gonna be one
of those guys that steps into a much bigger role
that is going to make an already formidable defensive line
that much better. I mean, if they had lost a
bunch of players, I think the conversation would be different here.
But like the band is back together for the most part.
They lost five free agents.

The Eagles lost nineteen after winning the Super Bowl two
years ago. So I just I think a lot of
people it's weird saying people are sleeping on a super
Bowl team, but I feel like there are a lot
of people sleeping on the Seattle Seahawks.

Cormus Smith joining US Animal Cityspector Nimalcityspectrum dot com. I
love this description. When you did a great film backdown
of even Worry the do it all hybrid slot safety
unicorn who moonlights as an edge rusher as well as
an inside linebacker. What does he not do? What does
number three not do out there?

Speaker 5 (48:00):
Well, he isn't going to be playing nose tackle that
I think that's the one person. I mean, I wouldn't
put it past him on passing downs to be a
stand up playing at the three tech position though, like
he he is as versatile.

Speaker 4 (48:13):
Of a player as I have ever seen. Ian.

Speaker 5 (48:17):
I'm not doing you know, I'm not diving in hyperboles
saying that, like how many guys can play slot, edge,
inside linebacker. I think he can play deep safety. I
saw him do it at South Carolina. They just didn't
ask him to do it last year. Like how many
guys can do all of those things at a elite

(48:39):
or borderline elite level. He is one of one, and
watching the film just reminded me just how ridiculous he
was as a rookie. And we got to remember he
just turned twenty two years old too, so he's just
scratching the surface of what he's going to become playing
for Mike McDonald.

Speaker 1 (48:57):
He had two and a half sacks last season in
the regulars. He didn't have one in the postseason, but
two and a half sacks in the regular season did
even worry. I'm really curious to see what he looks
like off the edge, like I think that's the part,
as you mentioned and in the film's breakdown as well,
I want to see with this because I just think
that I think that's a massively dynamic part of his
game that Mike McDonald could scheme up and all of

(49:19):
a sudden, because we all know they did it by
committee last season. The pass rush was by committee. Nuoso
had seven sacks, Leonard Williams had seven, Murphy had seven,
d Lawrence had six, and then everyone else had less
than four. On this team, like they really did it
by committee. But yet you think about it, they got
after the quarterbacks a lot. They had forty seven sacks.

(49:40):
The opponents only had twenty seven last season. It's a
pretty good ratio. They did it by committee, but I
can see some numbers jumping up for number three.

Speaker 4 (49:49):
Yeah, just watching him on the practice field.

Speaker 5 (49:51):
I've mentioned this in a few articles, but he didn't
you know, if you didn't know who he was, and
with a single digit number, and that doesn't really change
things anymore because you know, Nuosu wears seven like a
lot of these guys now where those single digit numbers
at edge rush and he just did. He just didn't
look out of place at all, Like how many safeties
would you just say that about being in a group

(50:14):
with DeMarcus Lawrence, Like you see him next to DeMarcus Lawrence,
You're like, yep, he looks like he's an edd dresser,
and he's more out of place when you see him
with like the slot corners who all look like dwarves
next to him. But it's just, yeah, he I think
I'm I don't know if it's this year, but I
think Jamal Adams record that he broke with the Seahawks

in twenty twenty for sacks for a defensive back.

Speaker 4 (50:40):
I think at some point in his career, Nicki min
Warr is going.

Speaker 1 (50:43):
To break that record.

I think he's that kind of a player in terms
of just dynamic playmaking ability.

Adams had nine and a half that year, So I
mean he that seems very red.

It's that guy like I could see I could see
like three or four years into his career where he
is playing a ton of edge and getting a lot
of opportunities to be able to do that, and he's
already made progress. Like I just I just feel like
he has way more that he can work with than
what even Jamal Adams had. Like he's got way more size,

He's faster, I you know, he's got longer arms to
threaten tackles off the edge. I mean he can go
against those big tackles. Jamal Adams would just get engulfed
by those guys. His best was coming on blitzes. Even
Worri doesn't have to be a blitzer, Like I think
you can play him as an edge on passing downs
and just let him pin his ears back and he

(51:37):
can play that position.

Speaker 4 (51:39):
It's just it's remarkable. Like I said, he's the most
versatile player I've ever.

with this as we get ready for training camp. The
story there's like, you've got a million stories up there,

The one thing I'm going to be really curious about

UH is and we talked about the receivers. I think
there's some pretty heavy competition for the bottom end of
the receivers. The side of a great team is the
fact that they're worried about who their gunner is going
to be and there's competition for the gunner on the
punt team and kickoff team. Like, okay, that's that. That's
a pretty good sign of a good football team. I
really want to see the running back situation. I really
will see when Sharbonay is back. I want to see

(52:26):
what Price does. I think that's a big part of
this team. We saw last season there was I just
the weird splitting of the carries two hundred and twenty
one for Walker, one eight four for Scharbonay in the
in the in the regular season, Uh, Walker still goes
over a thousand. But I want to see what that
running back rotation looks like, especially with the first round
draft pick.

Yeah, I think you know, a lot of people saw

was over the last few weeks.

I think all the feedback I've had, whether I was
marching with the twenty five thousand people on Monday or
talking to people outside the stadium, the reviews of Seattle
have one hundred percent been positive and people talking about
that sense of pride. There's a woman I met, Robin

from Missoqua, who's lived here for decades. She came down
to downtown Seattle just to participate in the march and said,
this shows how this community can come together and everybody's
so happy. You kept hearing that word as well. You'd
watch people, even coming out of the defeat of the

US team on Monday, American fans walking up to Belgium
fans saying thank you for coming. I hope it's been
a good experience. So all those little things happening during
the course of three weeks, it was unlike anything that
I've seen in the years before that. It was truly,
I think, a unique time in Seattle. It was a

rallying point for Seattle to get stuff done, for the
region to get stuff done. And I hope people had
a moment to just even look around at the city
and appreciate how special and unique this was, because it
did not feel like any other event that I've covered

or experienced here in Seattle.

You're you're the reporter that covers the city itself, not
just the sports aspect of the city itself. So I'll
ask you this you've heard. I'm sure you've heard the
same thing. I hear it all the time. I see
it on our text line and on sports station. It's like, yeah,
still look great. Now. I guess they're gonna ship all
the all the drug addicts and the homeless and everybody.
The Winnebagos are all going to come back inside the city.
The city looks spectacular. Can the city still look spectacular?

Can it still be that over the next however long?

I mean that's the challenge moving forward. And I think
you know, part of this whole story with the World
Cup is that it was a point in time that
was a rallying point for stuff to get done. So
think about this. The Sound Transit, Cross Lake light rail
six years overdue, Dal Constantine and that Sound Transit Board

new it better be done in time for the World Cup.
The Waterfront redevelopment. Part of that timeline was making sure
it was done in time for the World Cup to
host events on the water the parks that open to
the north that were funded in large part by Melinda
Gates and Mackenzie Scott. That was done and the plans

were put in place to get it done in time
for the World Cup. So so many things were planned
around this and parts of the city being cleaned up
planned around this moment in time, What is the next
event that is going to prompt that? And that's the
challenge I think going forward for the city. I don't

(01:03:20):
think it's going to revert to what it was a
month ago, and I see those same social media posts,
but I think that this was an example for a
lot of people in this city, in and outside government
to say, look what can happen when people come together
for a civic event like this one. And that's gonna

(01:03:42):
be the challenge. Peter Thomas, ala CEO of the Local
Organizing Committee, suggested there will be an enthusiasm hangover. People
are going to look around in another week and go Okay, now,
what do we get excited about. I think that these
are there are going to be challenges going forward. But boy,
if you could just put this last month, so to speak,

in a time capsule so everybody could have a chance
to look at it, and it would be good for
everybody to ball.

Now we do, and it's and that's not going away.
The question, I guess would be what is next? You
wrote about a little bit, you talked about it. There
are some events coming up, Women's World Cup, rugby, maybe
an NFL draft, all those things. Nothing will be on
the scale that we just saw. But what should this
city be really going after as far as the next

big event, Well, I think it is gonna be the
Women's World Cup. That'll that'll be finalized here by FIFA
later on this year. I believe November. I could be
off on the date, but later on this year, and
then it's gonna be a matter of which host cities.
I think that you know, whether it's Peter Tomasawa or
Beth Knox at the Seattle Sports Commission, others believe that

this whole event puts Seattle higher up the pecking order.
I think we've seen people from outside Seattle, national writers,
international writers talk about how great that experience was at
Lumenfield or dare I say Seattle Stadium as FIFA wants
us to call it. Yes, that it's going to put

(01:05:59):
Seattle further up, maybe ahead of a Kansas city, maybe
get a semi final, or boy be nice to have
a final in the Women's World Cup. I mean, that's
gonna be That's gonna be the next big event that
brings people to Seattle from around the world, presuming that
Seattle is going to be one of the host cities.

Speaker 7 (01:06:17):
Rugby World Cup. Same thing in twenty thirty one, and
I think Beth Knox will will take those visuals from
the waterfront during this event and show them to the
NFL and say, this is how we can stage the
NFL Draft on the water with the space Needle or
on Lake Union. I think all of those visuals that
everybody just saw across America would look amazing for an

NFL draft, and I know they'd like to host one
here in Seattle. So I think that could be one
that potentially could be done before twenty thirty one, if
Seattle can win a bid, and of course I think
looking further or closer, I guess on the calendar. I
think it's gonna be fun for people if the NBA
decides to expand to Seattle later on this year, and

(01:07:04):
there might be some spontaneous fans celebrations in the streets
or that will be put together that would also involve
several thousand people if and when we have a final
act on that story later this.

Yeah, I think, and I think we are going to
get to that at some point later on this year
as well. Christiane's with us before I let you go. Yeah,
it's interesting. I think the first time you and I
met in person for some we started talking is when
we had spontaneous rallies down at a courthouse and Pioneer
Square Save our Sonics, that type of stuff. And when
that does happen, I dare say, we'll have a celebration
that will be something else and I can't wait for that.

I'll wrap it up with this. I know he kind
of walked it back, but you know, famously, former city
Councilman Nicolocotta talked about no cultural value or close to
zero cultural value for sports and other things, and we've
had other council members of the years talk about and
try to quote different numbers saying, well, there's no economic
impact for sports. You did the story. I think we

just talked about the cultural impact. We saw it. We
saw it when we're doing shows down to Jimmy's on
first and Belgium fans hanging out with USA fans and
people from all across the world. There was a cultural value.
There was a coming together, a common grounded community really,
so to speak. What about financially, I know not everyone
did well. I know the international district wasn't happy. But boy,

walking around downtown hard to find a place to go
grab a pint or a bite to eat and stuff,
it looks like there was plenty of economic value to this.

World Cup well, and I will tell you yes, the
answer is yes. Down in Pioneer Square, I interviewed the
owner of a small wine shop. This was now after
the first USA match that the week that followed after
the juneteenth match, and asked him about the impact and

he told me yes, day on record during the USA
Australia match, and it was four times as busy as
his previous busiest day on record, which.

said it was the highest revenue day the eighteenth for
hotels and motels in the region than the previous busiest
day on record, which was that Taylor Swift weekend. So
that gives you an idea of just the economic impact
from that one game. And Peter Thomas Away said this
is gonna be like six Super Bowls. So you get

the idea that that many people came to town to
not only from around the world but regionally, just to
soak up the atmosphere, even if they didn't have tickets
or watch it on the big screen. At Occidental Park
and that small wine shops right by Occidental Park, the
owner also told me this month and again this is

now a couple of weeks ago, he said this month
will likely save multiple businesses in Pioneer Square because of
the amount of foot traffic that is coming through there
and and people that are spending money to watch games,
even on the big screen. Uh So, I mean it's
been that kind of event, uh, a communal event where
everybody is happy. People some way matches coming to die
