good news for Seattle. Former quarterback Matt Hasselback joining the
(00:27):
effort to diagnose CTE in living people. NBA Lakers being
sold to Josh Kushner and Bob Igger Iiger for a
twelve point five billion.
Speaker 1 (00:36):
The i Infernest Show is presented by Snow Call me
Casino text us at four nine four five one and
hit the talkback Mike on the iHeartRadio app. This is
the News Sports Radio ninety three point three KJRFF.
Speaker 2 (00:50):
All right, welcome in, I got a lot to get
to today and just bear with me. Anders for a
second kind of pivoting here on the fly a little bit. Okay,
all right, and I'll just tell you what's going on
in the last twenty minutes, just chasing something down. All right,
let's start with the Lakers sale. This is gonna have
this all has to do with Seattle in the NBA,
all right, So we're just we're gonna go.
Speaker 3 (01:13):
All right, and I just got an email back, so
I will.
Speaker 2 (01:22):
All right, So the Lakers sold to Josh Kushner and
Bob Eiger for twelve point five billion dollars, by the way,
a two billion dollar profit for uh for mister Walker.
Speaker 3 (01:33):
The old owner. Pretty good. There are a lot of
layers to that.
Speaker 2 (01:37):
He's got some issues going on, apparently, whether it's trying
to hide money or not. I don't know what he's doing.
I don't know one of the things though, that's jumping out.
First of all, people go, okay, wait a second, how's
that affects Seattle? Does it affect Seattle at all?
Speaker 3 (01:52):
It does not.
Speaker 2 (01:53):
That price does not affect Seattle. And it's keep in
mind we're talking about the Lakers, Lakers, Yankees, Cowboys. They're
in different levels of all things sports, like it or not,
love it or not. Dodgers in that same category, which
of course he also has bigger, bigger brands, established brands,
media rights just different. So in terms of what Seattle
(02:15):
is looking at what Vegas might be looking at, it
does affect Vegas in a sense because those two were
thought to be involved potentially with Vegas. Maybe they found
out that they were not going to be able to
to be able to do that.
Speaker 3 (02:34):
So that's one thing.
Speaker 2 (02:37):
And Tim Booth wrote a really good story I think
just Tim Booth was a really great story on in
the Seattle Times about that. In the meantime, in the
last half hour, became aware of reached out confirmed with
a couple different people that there is now a second
well and again let me let me also reiterate one
thing in the process of expansion. My my understanding is,
(03:02):
and the funny thing is, you can't get confirmation because
of what I'm going to tell you. My understanding is
if you're going to formally submit a bid to the
NBA and you're involved in that process for expansion, the
NBA doesn't want that. This is not something they want
negotiatd or talked about publicly. There's some NDAs involved in
things like that. So if you really think about it,
you haven't heard. You haven't heard fully in Vegas or
(03:25):
the Colangelo's actually come out and say something specifically, Hey, we.
Speaker 3 (03:29):
Were right part of it. Yeah, same thing here in Seattle.
Speaker 1 (03:32):
We know.
Speaker 2 (03:33):
I mean they've they've been very if you look at Seattle,
how they've handled things with Samantha hall Away now with
Milinda French Gates and just the One Roof group, they've
never come out and really been really specific on their intents. Right,
we know that they want to. Todd's talked about it,
you know in kind of general terms.
Speaker 4 (03:51):
You're very careful actions too with the One Roof correct forming.
Speaker 3 (03:55):
Right.
Speaker 2 (03:56):
So there's a company called Black Sun. It's out of
New York. It's called black black Son Private Equity. Now
I'm just getting this guy's on the fly, So bear
with me for a second if you can, and we'll
get to Mariners and everything else. But I think Sonics expansions,
NBA expansion in Seattle is at the top of everyone's mind. Right,
So black Son Private Equity investing in the architecture of tomorrow.
(04:17):
I'm going to read what their front page of their
website says and I'll go from there because I just
got an email back from a person with black Son.
Black Sun private Equity is creating an ecosystem at the
intersection of sports, entertainment, media, technology, and the capital markets.
Through discipline, capital allocation, strategical relationships, and long term partnerships,
we help build companies, industries, and institutions that shape culture
(04:39):
and define the world of tomorrow sports entertainment media. Okay,
so I'm trying to find that's their pillars. Their founder,
Anton Muhammad, the role of private equity and venture capital
is not only to back innovation, but to back evolution.
Investing what makes us more human is is his thing.
(05:01):
I'm trying to Now, I'm just gonna look and see
what we do, team insights, what we do. I don't
think they have any teams right now that they're truly
involved with. I'm just kind of ai fun human longevity
blah blah blah.
Speaker 3 (05:16):
Okay, So.
Speaker 2 (05:19):
Here's what I just found out. I emailed this guy
back because I heard his name from black Son.
Speaker 3 (05:25):
Hi Ian.
Speaker 2 (05:26):
Yes, I'm happy to confirm that black Son is partnering
with local tribes for the Seattle expansion.
Speaker 3 (05:34):
Bid.
Speaker 2 (05:36):
I'll have to call him in a break, but yes,
I'm happy to confirm that black Son is partnering with
local tribes for the Seattle expansion bid. This is from
Nick Rathod from black Son Private Equity. Now here's what
I can tell you that I do know for a fact.
It's not when they say local tribes, we are not
(05:56):
talking about the Big Three and Iramal Queen Casino, Akpallup,
the Muckle Shoot Tribe, Muckle Shoot Casino and still Qualm
those are not them. One thing that's really interesting about
this all three are major partners of the Seattle Crack
in a one roof. Muckle Shoot has their logo on
(06:16):
the crack in Jerseys. The other two are both partners,
corporate partners to some level. Not the same as the
Muckle Shoot. There's no exclusivity with the tribes, but they're
all involved. They're all kind of on team one roof,
so to speak. So I'll check with this guy in
the break. But it's it's a it's an interesting speculating me.
(06:39):
Yeah something, And I'm just gonna read this on it
because Greg greg Right Gregs is pretty sure private equity
firms and people can't own more than thirty percent of
an NBA franchise per league rules. Here's the thing. By
all accounts, even the Big three, remember what it would
cost eight billion. No, it's going to be and that's
(06:59):
another thing. That sale we're still looking at six to
seven billion. Okay, okay, So but let's just say you
want to build your own building. Now we're talking ten
to twelve billion, right then we're then then and then
the question is where Okay, well, minors saying is the
tribes that they're talking about don't necessarily have land. They're
(07:22):
not like like the still Qualmi casino. Their land effectively
is where the casino is, and they have some other
things going on Muckleshoot. It's obvious the tribes right down
there in Auburn, and same thing with the Pillpe tribe
which owns the Animal Queen casino. These these tribes, and
we'll try to confirm who they are, don't have that.
So let's take the land part of it out, like
like if you said, hey, the Emerald Queen Casino and
(07:45):
I'm just using this as a hypotheticals is one of
the tribes and they're interested in buying. First of all, again,
the money we're talking about is far exceeds what some
of these tribes would be able to just I mean, listen,
we all joke about it, like there's a reason they
build the hotels because they you know, when you go
up and pull the slots or play game, play cards
or what have you. But the truth of the matter is,
like those hotels aren't a brand new arena, an NBA
(08:07):
franchise or not, you know, seven six seven billion dollars.
But if it was, for example, well hey you could
let's put a let's put an arena down where they
sell fireworks at the Muckle shoot on that big piece
of land next to the next to the hotel in
the casino. Be an absolute logistical nightmare. But it wouldn't.
That's just a hypothetical. Same thing with so Kwame or
(08:28):
Emerald Queen right next to the Tekoma Doon whatever. Right, Yeah, yeah,
blow up the one in Fife, that's the old one
in Fife and use that land. Good luck anyway, these tribes,
I don't think have that. I don't know what the
what the endgame is here. It's very strange. It's very
strange to me. It's it feels like it's muddying the
(08:49):
waters a little bit. And I'm not sure why someone
would do that. I'm not sure looks you want to
get an NBA franchise here. I get that we all
want one here. There's really one owner ship group that
seems to be the only one that makes sense because
they also basically own and operate the building. But this
new group is putting it out there. The fact they
(09:09):
would put that out there is very strange to me,
because again, this is not something the NBA likes. So
there's a lot of questions to be asked. I'll see
what I can get in the break here in a
couple of minutes, but I would just say put the
brakes on it a little bit like when you hear
tribes buying a team or part of a group, and
a coalition of tribes. First of all, coalition tribes is
(09:31):
really kind of interesting. I'm not sure how that would work. Yeah,
but you'd have to they would be part, and then
the private equity group be part. Who else is a
face of it? Who's being told This whole little chess
game musical chairs in a sense, is being played right
now with the NBA, because what's happening is two people
(09:52):
what's just called a group, a group that was thought
to be involved potentially with Vegas is no longer involved
because now they bought the Lakers. We heard a couple
weeks ago the Colangelos were involved with Vegas. They still
may be, hell, they may be the leaders in the clubhouse.
Who knows, would they have to build a building?
Speaker 3 (10:11):
Perhaps?
Speaker 2 (10:12):
Would that mean they'd have to cut a deal with
fully in the tea mobile rantump. Maybe what we are
only concerned with here in Seattle is any potential delays.
Speaker 3 (10:21):
Correct.
Speaker 2 (10:21):
We do believe twenty twenty eight is the target date.
Adam Silver has said that we hope that this September,
maybe by October November at the latest, by before the
end of the year, we find out that yes, indeed,
expansions coming here in twenty twenty eight. We don't need
the waters being muddied at all by some private equity
firm out of New York. It's just an odd thing
(10:42):
to happen and also be announced and confirmed on the day,
as Nick just confirmed it with me, this Nick Rathod
person from Black Sun Private Equity. It's odd that it
would be out there today when this sale of Lakers
goes through. Just get the damn NBA here, please. But
(11:03):
I think there's more questions and answers.
Speaker 4 (11:05):
Can I ask one question, yes, do we know for
a fact that this is a separate situation than the
One Roof group. They are not being maybe just a
small part of it and all that stuff there is.
Speaker 3 (11:19):
They are not.
Speaker 2 (11:20):
Okay, Okay, I just want to because I yeah, no, no, yeah,
they are not. It's One Roof is not bringing in
a private equity group from New York. No, okay, no, no,
I think we could can We can probably connect some
dots and say they brought Melinda French Gates on. Yeah,
and her portfolio that's close to thirty billion that they've
(11:43):
never said that, Hey, she's here to buy the NBA team.
Sure feels like it, though, Yeah, sure feels like it. Wow,
crazy stuff, all right, Uh, we got a lot to
get to today Hard Knocks. We've got Terry and Arnold
to talk about Mariner's cal post game, everything that went
on in that game last night. Hugh Millen is going
to join us at one o'clock. We're going to talk
(12:03):
a little because he's he's not allowed to do this
when he's on Softy. Can't talk preseason football. We are
a preseason football freeze, not free a friendly zone. Okay, sure,
So we're gonna do that because I think you listen,
you're watching Hard Knocks. Yeah, you're a Seahawk fan. You
want to watch there. And I'll tell you now, the
preseason game on Saturday will be the highest rated television
(12:25):
show in Seattle since Super Bowl, the Super Bowl. I mean,
it won't approach the Super Bowl numbers, but it will
be the highest rate like World Cup maybe, Yeah, what
did the World Cup draw here? I'd have to double
check the number find that because I'd be curious. It
will be interesting. Yeah, probably it's it's but you'll have
it'll be very much comparable. So we'll talk about that
(12:46):
with him later on four nine four five one is
it's come a Dutch text one four nine four five one.
We'll take a break, come back from more nine three
point three KJFM.
Speaker 1 (12:55):
Now back Dean Furness on your Home for the Huskies,
Cracking and the Twelfth Man, brought to you by Seattle's
Closest Snow call Me Casino and Hotel on Sports Radio
ninety three point three kjr FM.
Speaker 2 (13:14):
Story gets stranger by the moments. We will get back
to it at one forty five as I work through
some things, sounds good. You're just joining us a group
out of New York, but I'd say out of New York,
they're kind of all over the place. Private equity firm,
(13:34):
Black Sun Private Equity is partnering with some local tribes
here in our state, our area, our region, and they
are interested in submitting a bit. If I have not already,
I don't get the release here in a second for
an NBA expansion franchise in Seattle. There's a lot of layers.
(14:00):
I can tell you that I do not believe. They
will not confirm who the tribes are, but I do
not believe that any of the Big three. I can't
speak on tu Leila, but it does not sound like
the Pulla Muckleshoot or snow quality tribes are involved, which
but there's a reason for that. I'll get to that
a little bit. Okay, let's get to the Mariners real quick.
We'll get back to that in a little while. As
that story of Vall's NBA expansion, well, NBA expansion in
(14:23):
Seattle is just at the I mean, I know, listen, Seahawks, obviously,
Mariners for sure, everything else going on in our area
college football starting soon. But we're you know, we were
all waiting on pins and needles for an NBA expansion
announcement to come. It feels as if it's a pretty
clean situation in terms of who it would be that
would be the one roof group. But now we may
(14:46):
have another. And this is the first time we've truly
heard of another group. I can tell you that I
think they'd have to build their own building and we're wait,
I'm waiting.
Speaker 3 (14:54):
On some stuff on that.
Speaker 2 (14:56):
It should be really interesting. Okay, lose four to one
game one of the series last night.
Speaker 3 (15:03):
Oh boy, where do we start?
Speaker 2 (15:06):
Where do we well, let's start with this creative ways
to lose a game? Yeah, And you know, honestly, one
of the fun things about sports is the fact that
in sports you you never know what's going to happen,
and you truly don't. You don't know what's going to happen.
Speaker 4 (15:27):
There's multiple ways to win, there's multiple ways to lose.
Speaker 2 (15:30):
Let me go back to telling you something yesterday and
revisiting the fact that I told you so. Did I
not tell you that Brian wo would be good?
Speaker 5 (15:37):
You did? So?
Speaker 3 (15:38):
It's softy now he was good but not efficient?
Speaker 2 (15:43):
Not efficient and that hurt them, Yes, because if we
want to do the little blame pie, we can for yesterday. Yeah,
Brian Woo did not give up a run, right, he
was he was fine, but he couldn't get out of
he could couldn't get to the sixth inning, correct, And
that's where they came in.
Speaker 3 (15:58):
That's where trouble started. Seventh inning. But yes, seventh thing y, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (16:03):
He threw what thirty pitches in the first inning, Yes,
and just was not efficient and they had to go
to the bullpen and it costs them. Now we can
debate the decisions all day long with Dan Wilson and
the use of the bullpen, how he uses it, who's available,
who's not, all those things. Let's just get down to
the crux of it. They can't score runs. So, I
(16:25):
mean one run on Sunday, one run yesterday. What they've
I mean what four Now they've scored five runs in
the last five games combined. They can't score, like, they
just can't score runs.
Speaker 3 (16:38):
And it's not even just scoring. They can't hit.
Speaker 4 (16:40):
It's not like they're hitting a bunch and then they
just can't hate them get them one big hit. No,
they're just not even hitting even getting on base.
Speaker 3 (16:46):
And in the world of.
Speaker 2 (16:49):
Like hard hit balls and exit velo and all that.
New York had a lot yesterday off WU that didn't
cost him.
Speaker 3 (16:55):
He got lucky, and he got lucky. Stand not so much.
Speaker 2 (16:58):
So cal Rally comes out after the game and he
speaks to the media that's assembled there. We're not going
to play the audio because it's just, honestly, it's bad audio.
Speaker 4 (17:07):
Not in terms of what he said, but just the
well agility of it. Yeah, the problem is is you
can't hear it. It's in a hallway. But he took accountability,
all right. So he took accountability and kind of showed
some leadership, which I know like Softy and others have
been saying, hey, you know, when when are we going
to hear from the leaders on this team. I'm going
to read you a couple of his quotes and we'll
(17:28):
respond to them. Courtesy of the Seattle Times, he says,
it's not good. We're not playing well. This starts with me.
I'm awful. I've got to find a way to be
better and to help bring the guys along. We just
got to play better. We're just playing very, very very
bad baseball in every factor of the game. We got
to pick it up from the energy standpoint of the execution.
The little things of the game that help you win
baseball games. We're just not doing those things right now.
(17:51):
That's what the first step to that would be. Roley
talked about a mindset. It's tough when things aren't going
your way.
Speaker 3 (17:56):
It's hard.
Speaker 2 (17:56):
You feel like everybody's against you, things aren't going your way,
But you've got to have a good attitude. Remember he
went zero for four with the strikeout and a couple
of strikeouts. Strikeouts, and the game talks about approach anything else.
I think, to me, the money quotes were when he
talked about who's to blame, and it's something we've talked
about on this show a lot. He says, and I'm
(18:18):
going to read this verbatim. This is from cal Rawley,
the courtesy the Seattle Times quote. Ultimately, the players decide
the outcomes of these games. Obviously Dan has the saying
who comes in games, and he writes the lineup, and
we understand that. But at the end of the day,
those twenty six guys have to be ready to play
and rely on each other. That's where the performance comes in.
Dan's not out there playing Edgar isn't out there playing
Woody Pete Woodworth is not out there pitching. It comes
(18:40):
down to the twenty six guys in the locker room.
He also talked about Depoto and Hollander. We can't point fingers.
We can't say it's Jerry's fault, Justice Falder, Dan's fault.
Speaker 3 (18:48):
We can't.
Speaker 2 (18:48):
It's not their fault. It's our fault. We're the ones
that are underperforming, and we have to accept that. That's
the tough reality of it. As a leader on this team,
I feel responsible. I just have to do a better
job of getting ready to go and be prepared, bring
that edge and that readiness each night. Applaud cal Rawley
for that and agree with him one hundred percent. I
think we've been very consistent on this show. We've been
(19:09):
very consistent, even with the molliwop stuff and others. Manager
change aside, and I think you can have a couple
of things be the same.
Speaker 5 (19:20):
One.
Speaker 2 (19:21):
You can believe that Dan Wilson's not a good enough
manager for this team. At the same time, what cal
Rawley said is in my mind, I agree with him
one hundred percent because I've been saying that a lot,
and I think a lot of people have those guys
haven't played well. Cal Raley has been not good, and
(19:42):
because he's been not good or as he said, awful,
this team is underperforming. You're only as good as your
best players. In any sport, it just doesn't matter. We've
talked about this with the Seahawks. Can you imagine if
Sam Darnold was having a cal Rawley type of year.
I don't even know what that would look like in
terms of football, probably completing just over fifty percent of
(20:05):
his past I mean, it would be something touchdown, more interceptions.
It would be Sam Howell like when he was Remember
when Sam Howel was in DC a couple of years
ago before he came to Seattle, and he had that
year was like almost even in terms of touchdowns and interceptions,
and to have more pass attempts than anybody, but none
of the numbers look good despite that. That's the kind
of years. If Sam Donald had that kind of year
(20:27):
and JSN was on pace for a four hundred yard
four hundred yard receiving season, Cooper Cup about the same.
You didn't have anybody near a thousand yards running the football.
Your defense was giving up twenty plus points a game.
See It's funny because those that and then we probably
look at the coach exactly right, look at the coach.
Speaker 3 (20:49):
That's how it goes.
Speaker 2 (20:50):
But at the same time, you say, well, look at
these decisions Sam Donald's making, and then you can look
at the player. I'll give you an example. We're going
to see Sam Howell on Saturday. He's the number three
guy for the Cowboys. Right, Like, at some point the
players aren't good enough or they're not playing well enough.
And you know, what we saw last night was just
(21:10):
a microcosm of the season. You come out, your pitcher
gives you every chance. And let's remember this is an
Yankee team. We talked about with Joe she And yesterday
and he wrote about it.
Speaker 3 (21:22):
They're not hitting well.
Speaker 2 (21:24):
They're not hitting well at all since Aaron Judge went out.
They're a bottom third team in most statistical categories since
Judge went out.
Speaker 3 (21:34):
Very similar to the Mariners.
Speaker 2 (21:35):
Very similar to the Mariners, like if you probably put
if you did, Like in football, we get the weekly
releases and they have the stats and you know rankings
and all that like total off like running offense rank,
passing offense rank, total offense, storing yours, all that and
it's like you're six, five to four and the look
the other team is seven, eight, twelve, whatever it is.
If we looked at that and said, you know, batting average,
(21:57):
on base percentage, runs per game ops, Mariners would be
like in the high twenty twenty nine, thirty, twenty eight,
twenty seven. The Yankees would be in the same They're
not a good offensive team. No, that's they're not a
good offensive team, the Yankees. And because they're not a
good offensive team, that gives you a chance to win
(22:18):
with your pitching staff. Now here's a problem. The Yankees
pitching staff is really good. That's the other problem. Yeah,
and their bullpen right now is probably better. Would you agree?
Oh yeah, like their bullpen's ma it's deeper if nothing else. Yeah,
So what's the problem with this team? It's exactly what
we just said. It's it's the players. And we've been
saying all they could replace Dan Wilson. Does that mean
(22:39):
all of a sudden, if they replace Dan Wilsons cal Raley,
all of a sudden gonna turn it around.
Speaker 4 (22:44):
It's a tool to have that happen, right, If you
believe you have a talented roster that should be playing
much better than it is right now. And it's from
the top down right, That's where a managerial change can
get more out of that. If nothing else, even if
it isn't solely Dan will since fault to have a
different voice, have a different approach like and I mentioned
(23:05):
this last night in the postcast, Egar Martinez and Kevin
Seitzer can't take can't be absolved of blame either. What
is this approach that they have? Where did everything go
from last year?
Speaker 2 (23:16):
That's that's the question, you know, I mean, And because
we've looked at things, the things like bat speed, yeah,
you know, and things like that. Batspeed, I think is
always one to look at. And I'll will ask you
know this a little bit more tomorrow. And that's more
just in terms of if they're injured or not right
and like have they you know, because I'll just I'll
go back in time. If you know Mariner fans that
are you know, old enough to remember the great John Olerude.
(23:39):
He went from being a three hundred hitter to a
two to twenty hitter, like literally overnight. And what people
were saying is his bat speed, you know, just diminished.
And it happens with age. What scares me about cal
He's going to be thirty years old in November.
Speaker 4 (23:57):
Is this the beginning of a falloff? Or is this
just a bad sea That's what's scary to me. Baseball
is such a fickle sport.
Speaker 3 (24:04):
Yeah, it takes you.
Speaker 2 (24:06):
And this is why they're gonna It's a side note here,
a little tangent. This is why the CBA is such
a I mean, everyone wants to scream and holler, and
rightfully so about the salary cap.
Speaker 3 (24:14):
And I get that.
Speaker 2 (24:14):
That's like the headline. Guys, one of the big things
that baseball players want is the ability to become a
free agent and make money sooner than later. These guys
aren't getting paid until they're late twenties and then by then.
And here's the thing with baseball. If you're a baseball team,
if you're the owners, I think you should want that, yes,
because here's the thing you're then. Josh Naylor is a
(24:35):
great example. How old is Josh Nailer?
Speaker 5 (24:37):
Do you know?
Speaker 3 (24:37):
Off top of your head? Twenty eight twenty nine?
Speaker 2 (24:38):
Okay, maybe he's falling off right, God's so weird. I'm
sitting here twenty nine sixty one, falling apart and body
aches everything hurts, blah blah blah age and yeah, and
well I'll ask you how different do you feel at
twenty eight, twenty nine then you did it twenty one,
like Miles taking newborn away and all that. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
(25:00):
but like could you do the same thing on a
soccer field right now?
Speaker 3 (25:03):
Fully?
Speaker 5 (25:03):
No?
Speaker 4 (25:03):
And I actually have tried multiple times, and I like
out of breath within two minutes, right, And it's crazy, man.
Speaker 2 (25:10):
That's why baseball player, like, that's why the owners like
instead of giving up these you're paying guys now and
what they've accomplished, and then it ends up being a
bad contract, right, I hope, Like, hell, cow's not.
Speaker 3 (25:22):
Maybe it is a one off. What a weird one off?
This would be.
Speaker 2 (25:28):
He's mine blanked right now, I can tell you that.
And and the audio that we did listen to, which
is again it's it's not worth playing on the radio
for you because it's just it's it sounds like Charlie
Brown's teacher.
Speaker 3 (25:38):
It's hard.
Speaker 2 (25:39):
It's just because of the background. Yeah yeah, yeah, it's
like the marriage didn't post it. We don't have a
reporter there obviously, so you're getting off, like you know,
New York Beat guys that are there and everything else.
I heard a guy that was defeated, and maybe it's
like a last gasp. I'm gonna I'm gonna have a
mia colpa. I'm gonna come out and take it. I'm
gonna wear it, and maybe that'll take a burden off
(26:00):
of me. I won't feel that burden anymore. I've said
what I need to say, and I can go out
and relax and play. I don't know, maybe that happens,
Maybe he turns it around. That'd be a magical turnaround, though.
I mean, then I'd ask myself, well, why didn't this
happen sooner?
Speaker 3 (26:13):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (26:15):
But last night, I mean, the only good news is
the other two teams in the division lost. But my god,
what are you eight games below five hundred.
Speaker 4 (26:22):
Nown Yeah, we're not. We're past the point of caring
about that right now. We just we need to get
if we're hoping for this season still, which I'm losing
a lot of it as it goes on. You can't
be thinking about scoreboard watching right now. You've got to
play good baseball first before any of that happens.
Speaker 3 (26:37):
We brought this up yesterday.
Speaker 2 (26:38):
I'm going to bring it up as a thought today
four nine four or five one, and then to come
a Dutch text line. The the feelings toward this baseball team,
to me are very unique this year. They're very this
year centric. What I mean by that is this, they
like I just people, you know, friends of mine, people
(26:59):
I talk to you. I don't know if the same
with you.
Speaker 3 (27:01):
Anders.
Speaker 2 (27:02):
People are legitimately just angry at the baseball team. It
feels as if very few true diehard Mariner fans baseball fans. Now,
there's the fringe fan that gets the bobble ahead and
the Jimothy card and all that. I get that, But
those you're listening to this station right now, you're you're
(27:22):
a sports fan. That's that's your like your hobbyists. I'm
a Mariner fan, I'm a Seahawk fan. I'm a Husky fan.
Whatever it might be. Those people, the people I'm speaking
to now, I got a couple group chats, not just
the ones we're like, just some friends. People are like, well,
you know, it's four to one, they're turning it off
in the seventh inning. It's by then, it was six o'clock.
(27:43):
We can watch hard knocks.
Speaker 3 (27:45):
I'm out.
Speaker 2 (27:47):
I don't know if people can even find like, if
they were to turn it around, how would you even
think about this season? I don't even know if people
can enjoy it anymore. It feels like the fun, the joy,
the excitement, the enthusiasm has been completely drained. Can you
have refill that tank? Is there any possible way to
(28:07):
refill that tank? Because up to this point, what two
thirds of the way through the season, a little bit more,
actually three quarters of the waist season?
Speaker 3 (28:16):
Right, yep? Up to this point, I don't feel like
many people have enjoyed this baseball season. No, am I am? I?
Am I in four nine, four to five one? You
tell me if I'm wrong? Am I missing that?
Speaker 2 (28:26):
I just don't think so. I don't even know what
they could do right now. Sure, if they make the playoffs,
we feel better.
Speaker 4 (28:32):
But right now the Astros are sixty one and sixty right,
they're basically five hundred, Right, the Mariners get to five
hundred and somehow win the division? Would you even like,
how could you even feel good about that at that point? Well?
Speaker 2 (28:46):
Okay, great question. I I think I've told you this.
I'm very consistent. Get to the playoffs and play I'm okay, yeah, yeah,
I didn't care when the listen all those years the
Seahawks were wildcard teams and people were like, oh it
sucks there a wildcard team.
Speaker 3 (29:02):
They're going run, you know what. They gut a chance.
Speaker 2 (29:05):
That's all I asked for. But I think more importantly
just the attitude about this team. I don't know what
could change it. Ten game winning streak, yeah, I mean
think about this. You want ten game win streak, you're
two gas about five hundred.
Speaker 4 (29:18):
Yeah, but you're also two games up in the division.
Speaker 3 (29:20):
God, that's crazy.
Speaker 4 (29:24):
It is crazy that that's all it takes. But again,
you've said this so much this what's the sign of
that coming?
Speaker 3 (29:30):
Now?
Speaker 4 (29:30):
If that does happen, I think people will instantly jump
back on board. I really do you think we could
still enjoy it? Could just still salvage this season as
a fan and enjoy it.
Speaker 3 (29:38):
I guess that's the.
Speaker 4 (29:39):
Only thing that It's not even just like, Okay, limp
into the playoffs, find a way to be optimistic and
beat a bunch of bad teams in September. It's if
you go on a true magical run where it looks
like this team is playing completely different baseball. Something as
awokened inside of them.
Speaker 3 (29:57):
Just to play.
Speaker 4 (30:00):
There's like a totally different team than what we've seen
for the last three or four months. If that happens,
then yes, I think people can absolutely still enjoy this
season and the outcome of it. But I again, I
don't see that happening. And also again I think the
easiest or not easiest, but the way that happens is
a change in management. Yes, like that would be the
(30:22):
thing to catalyze that. Maybe it won't, but we have
to You said it yesterday, leave every stone unturned, right,
You have to try and do everything you can. We
were preached at this season that this twenty twenty sixth
season was one to be urgent with that we're trying
to win the World Series this year. We're not thinking
about years down the road. So if that's the case,
(30:44):
you got to do something. You got to make a change.
So what's the change are the manager? I mean, do
you think that solves it? I don't think it solves it,
but at least you give some sort of jolt of
energy to this group, which is you could tell as
being said this same message over and over and over
(31:05):
and again, because we get the same message in postgame
press conferences over and over and over again. If nothing else,
they would possibly wake up to the fact that the
way that they are playing just got a manager fired
and they need to change some things up.
Speaker 2 (31:22):
So let's go back to the pitching or the hitting
coaches for a second, because this is words used a
ton when everyone says, why is he approach so different
or so bad? Yeah, what do you mean by that?
Speaker 4 (31:36):
You could tell when they are facing a pitcher that
may not blow them away with stuff, they are extra aggressive,
swinging super early in counts. I think Julio is a
great example of that. How often does he start O
two because he's swinging and everything, and then you're already
into defense mode as a hitter, right versus I know
(31:57):
this is going to trigger some people, but when when
was the whole control the zone stuff. That has not
been the case at all this year. They've just been
You could tell they're trying to hit their way out
of slumps. A bunch of these a bunch of these
players instead of letting the game come to you a
little bit. I know that's very generic and a kind
of overarching statement, but you that's how baseball works.
Speaker 2 (32:20):
So let me ask you this, do you think eighty
two and eighty gets you in the playoffs? Yes, Okay,
I think it does. So that's probably kind of the
will we say safe to say that's the minimum? Yeah, Yeah,
like eighty two wins. Eighty two wins gives you at
least a chance you'd have to go twenty six and sixteen.
(32:41):
Now do we believe they can go twenty six and sixteen?
Speaker 4 (32:45):
Probably not? But they I mean, yes they can, but
they won't. I mean, what sample size are you taking? No,
I'm not disagreeing with you at all. I keep holding
out hope that they're going to turn this thing around. Yeah,
and I think, I mean, it just feels like it's
(33:06):
but they look and they feel defeated, don't they. Yeah,
And I think last night was a great example of that.
Like you're just watching and looking at that dugout and
you're like, oh my gosh, it's and you know, maybe
that's what maybe last gas by cal but you're you really,
for all intents and purposes, you've got to go twenty
six and sixteen the rest of the way, and that's
(33:28):
a bare minimum. You lose tonight drops down to what
twenty six and fifteen, So you start looking. It's almost
like the NFL. We do this every year at the NFL.
Speaker 3 (33:37):
You can't get more than this many losses.
Speaker 4 (33:39):
You look at the losses on the right hand column.
Exactly what can you not get past? Well, you're running
out of losses to play with, Mariners.
Speaker 3 (33:46):
Well that's actually let's just go through it.
Speaker 2 (33:48):
Yeah, you've got about sixteen seventeen losses left to play with.
That's what you have left to play with in this
month and next month. Yeah, that's what you got if
the Astros or Rangers don't want to run themselves right. Well,
and again, they're both five hundred right now, so they're
eight games ahead of you in terms of just the pace.
The pace, not in terms of standard, but in terms
of the pace. All right, more income ninety three point
(34:10):
three KTERFM.
Speaker 1 (34:14):
Now back to and furness on your home for the
Huskies Cracking and the Twelfth Man, brought to you by
Seattle's closest snow call me Casino and Hotel on Sports
Radio ninety three point three kJ R FM.
Speaker 2 (34:30):
Alright, I'm talking matters. Oh yeah, yay, yay, all right,
don't me to read the release. Oh you got it,
got it? Black Sun Private Equity. Alright, I need to
I need to download it.
Speaker 3 (34:47):
I guess what are we going to talk about? Something positive?
Speaker 5 (34:49):
Man?
Speaker 3 (34:49):
Well, I mean this.
Speaker 2 (34:50):
I mean people might think this is positive. I personally don't.
I think it's mudding the waters. It feels very Fred
Brown floating arena type thing. All right, So yeah, Adobe
has new tools. Did you know Adobe a new tools?
Speaker 3 (35:05):
Okay? This is from.
Speaker 2 (35:10):
Black Sun Private Equity, Native World Sports and a coalition
of strategic investors and regional leaders today announced the formation
of an ownership group and the submission of a former
proposal to return the Seattle SuperSonics to Washington State through
NBA expansion.
Speaker 3 (35:25):
All right.
Speaker 2 (35:26):
The consortium was assembled around the single purpose restore one
of basketball's most iconic franchises, and doing so, established a
new model for team ownership. This is where's key, one
built on long term stewardship, meaningful tribal nation participation, and
a lasting commitment to the people of the Pacific Northwest.
The group looks forward to working closely with the NBA,
(35:48):
state and local officials, tribal nations, and regional stakeholders as
the NBA evaluates expansion. Any award of a franchise remains
subject to the NBA's formal expansion process and approval by
its Board of Governors. Anton Mohammed is a founder and
chairman and CEO of black Son Private Equity. The super
Sonics belong to Seattle. Our ambition is simply isn't simply
(36:09):
to bring a team back, to build a championship organization
worthy of the city, create lasting economic opportunity across the region,
established a model of ownership.
Speaker 3 (36:17):
Blah blah blah.
Speaker 2 (36:19):
It talks about all the see all the history of
the Sonics, which we kind of know. A defining element
of the proposal is the opportunity for tribal nations to
participate subsistently in the franchise of development and long term
economic ecosystem. Okay, well, without telling the guy wouldn't confirm
(36:43):
who the tribes are, but he just says it right here.
Seattle bears the name of Chief Seattle, a leader of
the Saquamish and Duwamish peoples. The consortium believes a franchise
representing this region should recognize the history through more than symbolism.
The ownership model is being developed in consultation with participating
tribal nations.
Speaker 3 (36:57):
The goal creating doubl blah blah blah anders. I just don't. Okay,
here we go, here's here's the money quote, here we go,
here it is.
Speaker 2 (37:12):
The ownership group is also developing a vision for a
premier sports entertainment district, anchored by a state of the
art arena and designed as a year round regional destination.
Subject to site selection, public review, and community consultation. The
district could include team practice and performance facilities, hospitality, retail, dining,
residential and office space, public gathering areas, parks, cultural institutions,
(37:35):
and entertainment venues. He wouldn't tell me the location. When
I talked to Nick on the phone, who's their spokesman.
Nothing in here says where that that regional place would
be built. He did, okay, So I did talk to
their spokesman. He says, he says, you can't tell me
the tribes. He just basically said, I'm the Suquamish Duwamish.
(37:57):
That's who it is. Yeah, it's in the press. It's
in the press release. I don't have to guess. He says,
they have land. So that's the question is where's the land?
What land do they have? Those two tribes by the
best of my quick searches don't have readily available land
that makes sense. And then pipeline of investors. Here's what
(38:22):
I don't like about this. We all want the NBA
to come back. We wanted to come back sooner than later.
If you were to build an arena right now today,
like shovel on the ground, you're still two years out.
That's really pushing it to have it like it's not
going to happen because you have to have the arena,
(38:43):
the franchise awarded.
Speaker 4 (38:44):
And if you have the land, it's already approved, everything's
good to go. Environmental impact studies are done, all the things.
I mean, they fast tracked Climate Pledge Arena from Key Arena,
but it was an existing building that really didn't have
to You don't have to buy a new like change
anything in terms of the approvals.
Speaker 2 (39:04):
The same way, here's here's what I would just say this. Here,
here's how I read this, and this is where the
NBA probably is just going to give them a middle finger.
First of all, they're talking about it publicly, which the
NBA does not like.
Speaker 4 (39:15):
So that was not like you mentioned something about having
to have an NBA. Yes, but they're having a press release.
That's I'm telling you the NBA cannot be happy with that.
That Hell, you and I could submit a form of
a proposal. Yeah, let's put a press release and surstine forness, they.
Speaker 2 (39:31):
Say we don't want it to be public. You guys
are out, but whatever. But let's just say, for argument's sake,
all this is true. That's a we're looking at four
years minimum problem. Right, Yeah, maybe I'm god maybe three,
but they're stuff doesn't happen without people knowing about it.
Speaker 3 (39:54):
If there was a building that was going to be built.
Speaker 2 (39:57):
And a hole, let me read this again, subject to
site selection, public review, and community consultation. So they haven't
even selected a site. He says, they have LAMB, but
they haven't selected a site. The district could include team
pre subject to public review and community consultation. You know
how long that will take. I mean, we're dealing with
(40:18):
right now, the potential of losing the golf course. We
have the mayor at every year, drewis Glenn. There's people
want to develop out there, and it's they said three
to six years away for that to happen, For the
county to approve it, city county doesn't matter we're years away. Anyway,
you're gonna see this. I just want to get it
out there, let people chew on it. I'm sure you'll
(40:40):
see more coming. But that's where we are right now.
Speaker 3 (40:42):
All right.
Speaker 2 (40:44):
The waters are muddied. It feels, God, it feels I
don't even know if you remember. Do you remember the
whole Fred Brown stuff. It's so when we were on
the verge of losing the Sonics and they're talking about
what can we do build a building, all this stuff's
going on, some sketchy ass group came out and they said, hey,
(41:05):
and Fred Brown was kind of their face, and we're
gonna we're gonna build a floating arena down on the waterfront.
It was gonna be down I think, pure more towards
where the ships are, which think about how laughable that
is now, since we couldn't build something on solid land.
But it was literally gonna be a floating arena.
Speaker 3 (41:23):
Oh my god.
Speaker 2 (41:24):
And they and poor Fred Brown, NBA champion, they put
him front and center.
Speaker 3 (41:28):
He was the face of it.
Speaker 2 (41:30):
See these guys, So what they're telling me is that
they've got some people they're gonna put out, Like God,
please don't do the following I'm just gonna I'm gonna
beg you do not do the following.
Speaker 3 (41:39):
If you're listening, don't do the following.
Speaker 2 (41:42):
Do not have Gary and Sean, Spencer Hawes, whoever, any
local NBA people, the local NBA ties, former Sonics are
guys that play in the league.
Speaker 3 (41:54):
They're front.
Speaker 2 (41:55):
You do not put those guys out there and putting
them make a face, make them the face of this thing,
because I think it tarnished Fred's inage a lot for
a long time. And I hope they don't do this
because this is such a long shot and all this
thing really, to me, is going to do probably is
maybe potentially delay what is the inevitable, and that's a
team playing at Climate Plageria in twenty twenty eight. All right,
(42:16):
we'll come back, Humil and joins us next.
Speaker 1 (42:21):
Now back Dean Furness on your home for the Huskies
Cracking and the Twelfth Man, brought to you by Seattle's
closest snow call Me Casino and Hotel on Sports Radio
ninety three point three kJ r FM.
Speaker 3 (42:38):
All Right, we don't have time for headlines.
Speaker 2 (42:42):
If we did, they're brought to by Frostburg Cruise like
Chusehill MS Loose, Seahawks hard knocks. Last night Lakers sold
for twelve point.
Speaker 3 (42:48):
Five billion R. I you news, what's that? And the
new news that you're yeah, there is a new god
too old for this stuff.
Speaker 2 (42:57):
There is a new group that has come forward that
has submitted a bid to the NBA to purchase an
NBA expansion franchise, Black Sun Private Equity, Native World Sports
and Regional Partners and I it's a bid to bring
the Seattle super Sonics home. We talked about the first
hour a couple of segments.
Speaker 3 (43:16):
I'm just going to tell you this.
Speaker 2 (43:18):
All it is, it appears to be. All it is
is a group mudding the waters. And there's many reasons
we already got through that. I want to move on
because I want to talk to my friend Humil, and
he's on with us right now. I have not talked
to him since I saw him at camp a couple
weeks ago. We had Mike McDonald on and talked afterwards.
But there's a lot going on, Hughe two things. One,
First of all, how are you? I'm great, good to
be with you. I appreciate you jumping on. This is
(43:40):
what I this is what I call a preseason what
did I call it earlier? A preseason friendly show, pre
season football friendly show. Unlike my buddy who I just
saw a minute ago run around yelling and screaming about stuff.
Speaker 3 (43:54):
You might know who he is. He's on three to seven.
Speaker 2 (43:56):
Uh, this is this is a pre season football friend zone.
We're going to talk about that in a second, because
people will watch it, people will be interested in the
stadium will be about I'm guessing about eighty five eighty
eighty five percent full at least, and that's how it
works here in Seattle.
Speaker 3 (44:11):
But I gotta get this. I know you're Mariners fan.
I if I can I throw something at yeah? Yeah, please?
We brought first hour.
Speaker 2 (44:19):
I don't know if you heard cal Rally was spoke
last night and and and did his thing kind of
a mea culprit's my fall.
Speaker 3 (44:25):
Blah blah blah.
Speaker 5 (44:26):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (44:27):
He said, don't blame Dan Wilson, don't blame don't blame management,
don't blame Pete Woodward, the pitching coach, or Kevin Martine
or Kevin Seitzer or the you know, Edgar Martinez. Blah
blah blah. Dan Wilson's not to blame either, to me,
I think the blame pie is pretty big. There's a
slice for everybody along the way, players specifically not playing well.
(44:47):
But where do you fall Like you played for some
great coaches in the NFL, I mean, NFL is different
than baseball, where do you falling?
Speaker 6 (44:53):
Dan Wilson, Well, first of all, a few things about
what cal Rawley said. In my opinion, this should not
move anybody because we don't learn anything from what cal
Rawly said last night. We already knew that cal Rawly
is an accountable guy, that he doesn't make excuses, that
(45:14):
he's the he's the captain, and for him to uh
to say, hey, look it's not on upper management, it's
on us and take accountability. Raise your hand if you're
surprised that cal Rawly said those things, like because because
the alternative would be what would you expect him to say?
Would you expect him to say, well, the manager needs
(45:36):
to prepare us better. Yeah, that that we haven't got
enough talent in our in our clubhouse. Would we expect
him to say that? No, that would create the headlines,
because that's what would shock you. So nothing that cal
Rawly did. He look, I applaud him.
Speaker 3 (45:52):
He should do that.
Speaker 6 (45:53):
It's in it completely in keeping with who he is
and who he should be and and and he doesn't,
you know, he doesn't get any cookies for what he did.
Speaker 3 (46:03):
As for Dan Wilson, Uh, I've given a lot of thought.
I don't need to enumerate the differences between football and baseball.
We all are aware of those. I you know, I
don't claim any expertise in baseball.
Speaker 6 (46:18):
I played it a lot as a kid, watched it
a lot as a kid, watch it a lot of
it as an adult.
Speaker 3 (46:22):
That's it. That's all just a fan my my, uh,
my experience with football coaches.
Speaker 7 (46:29):
Uh.
Speaker 6 (46:29):
And certainly it'd be like a Venn diagram, where there
are some things that are similar, some things that are not. Again,
we don't need to enumerate all of that, but I
would just say to you, what do how do we
assess pilots? If if I put you in a cockpit
of a plane, and you know, and then all of
(46:50):
a sudden you open your eyes and you know, a
quarter mile from you as a mountain, I suspect you
you grab that thing whatever it is, it looks like
a steering wheel, and you dank back right, you know,
just try to avoid the mountain. But but that's about
all all speak for myself, that's about all I could do.
Speaker 4 (47:09):
Uh.
Speaker 6 (47:09):
If you put me in the seat and you give
me win sheer, you know, the kind that makes a
plane drop one thousand feet in a second or whatever
the calculus is, I'm gonna be totally clueless. And moreover,
we're gonna evaluate pilots based not on what they do
when everything is sunny, there's no turbulence, seventy five degrees,
(47:32):
no win, what have you?
Speaker 3 (47:32):
You go up, you go down.
Speaker 6 (47:34):
We don't evaluate pilots that way. We evaluate pilots when
things really go wrong. I mean, I mean Chesley Sully Sullenberger, right,
the guy that I was just gonna say, Sully, Captain
Sully Sully. You know, he says, Nope, You're gonna lay
it down to the Hudson. You know about Nope, Nope,
I'm gonna lay it down the Hudson. Right, Like like
he faced an adverse situation, bunch of birds flying his
(47:55):
engine all of a sudden, It's like, how do I
handle this crisis? And so I would look at Dan
Wilson in that vein. I mean I would say that
there there ought to be Two postulates that are not
in dispute. Dan Wilson being a good human being, being
a good guy, you know, as a college coach of
(48:15):
Minnesota said, he's the best human being he ever coached.
Like the idea that that Dan Wilson is anything less
than a stellar sterling, a you know, human being, personality
contributed to Mariner history, all of these things that is
not in dispute, Nor is it in dispute for the
most part, that it's not his fault. These guys aren't
(48:35):
hitting well. But there is a window. There is a
window in a crisis. What are you gonna do? Are
you creating an environment of the ten ways that a
manager can handle this crisis? And I'm calling it a crisis.
It's a sport. It's certainly a Mariner crisis. It's not
a crisis in like two hundred and forty people are
going to die in a plane crash, But it's a
Mariner crisis.
Speaker 3 (48:56):
What is he doing to navigate this thing?
Speaker 6 (48:59):
And because that's how he's judged, Like, you're getting a
lot of turbulence, bro, you're getting you you're hitting win Sheer.
How are you responding? I just don't feel like he's
making the right decisions. And I'll tell you, Uh, for
a guy who's watched baseball for fifty years, I sell them.
I mean sell them. Ever, allow myself, whether it's the
(49:22):
Mariners or other team, to second guest pitching decisions, I
just don't do it. My mind doesn't go there. I
don't feel like I have the expertise to do that.
I just watch games and I say, well, there's a
manager that knows the matchups and all of the thing.
You know, he knows his players, he knows who's tired,
he knows the mentality, he knows the situation.
Speaker 3 (49:39):
I just don't. I don't get into second guesting managers.
Having said that, the.
Speaker 6 (49:45):
Decisions that Dan Wilson makes with this pitchers, I think
of all the of all the fifty times in my
life that I've ever questioned a manager's pitching decision, and
that's not a lot if you've been watching baseball for
over fifty years.
Speaker 3 (50:00):
Right, of the.
Speaker 6 (50:01):
Fifty that I've ever had in my entire life, like
forty five of them are from Dan Wilson. I'm doing exaggeration,
and I got hurt hyperbole in here, but but you know,
I just like you know, the seventh inning last night.
It's like it's almost it's almost like, are you Pete Rose,
are you.
Speaker 3 (50:18):
Like betting on against your like what?
Speaker 5 (50:21):
Like?
Speaker 3 (50:22):
Who would make that decision?
Speaker 6 (50:23):
It's like, even if you're blind and you spun out
a wheel, the decisions, you know, a case, just randomly
would often come up to be the right decisions.
Speaker 3 (50:32):
I feel like he's He's like, what's the worst decision
I can make? And then make it.
Speaker 6 (50:37):
I don't know, it seems like that happens a lot.
I'm sure that's not true, but at an event that's
a little bit of a ramball. I apologize, I listen,
I think, but I would say I totally supported firing
him after the All Star Game. At this juncture, there's
a less of a case to be made. But I
just ask you, if you really care about the Mariners,
(50:59):
whatever the problem abilities, the Mariners can can have a
a good postseason. Whatever that means. Does that mean, uh,
you know, win at a playoff series? Does that mean
go to the World Series?
Speaker 3 (51:12):
Does that mean win it? Whatever you think that is.
Speaker 6 (51:15):
Do you think in your heart, your heart, your intuition,
do you think you have a better chance keeping with
Wilson or a better chance making a change to whom
I don't even have an answer to that, And you know,
I don't know. I've got a quick anecdote for the
psychology of how I was impressed about a coach changing
(51:40):
the uh the environment. You got a second for that
with Jimmy Johnson.
Speaker 3 (51:44):
Uh, just let's do this. Let me because we're because
I want to transition to football anyway.
Speaker 2 (51:48):
Yeah, so let's do this. Let's take because we can
take a break now and that gives us a full
segment next segment. You can give me that, and then
I want to get into the preseason game on Saturday
if I can.
Speaker 3 (51:57):
Yeah, rock and roll.
Speaker 6 (51:58):
You know, Softie's happy that we trampled over the preseason
talk anyways, right now, now we're.
Speaker 2 (52:03):
Going to get to that because I think, because I
think there are more than anything out what I want
to get to in the next segment, Hugh, is this.
I want to get to what like if you're a
Seahawks fan, what are the things that you should be watching?
Speaker 5 (52:17):
Right? Like?
Speaker 2 (52:17):
Are you like, what are the we know? Like you
watch Hard Knocks. It's interesting with Hard Knocks this year
real quick, I can get to breaking no, but usually
you have like the two or three guys that they
follow that are like fringe guys, and you're rooting. Are
they going to get caught? Are they going to you
know that type of guy that we haven't seen that yet.
You've seen all starters, right, all guys like all just
the dudes, like the absolute dude so far. But there's
(52:40):
a lot of those guys in the fringe. And we
know how the NFL works every year, right that calm
October November, we're gonna be talking about them. Guys get hurt, right,
So I want to talk about some of those guys.
A couple of position battles Terry and Arnold.
Speaker 3 (52:54):
Is he needed hu mail? And I'll ask you that
next nine three point three KTERFM.
Speaker 1 (53:01):
Now back to Ian Furness on your home for the
Huskies Cracking and The Twelfth Man, brought to you by
Seattle's Closest Snow call Me Casino and Hotel on Sports
Radio ninety three point three kJ R FM.
Speaker 2 (53:16):
We're back on a Wednesday afternoon. He in fronesced with
you four nine four five one. That is the coming
out sex line four nine four five one. Here mailing
with me Saturday night at well, Saturday, late afternoon. I
guess five o'clock, Hugh, more than likely we'll see Joe
Milton handing off to Jayden Blue or Jay Shawn Corbin,
maybe Phil Maffa, and probably see a tackle made at
(53:38):
that time by Mike Morris or Brandon Peely, maybe Patrick O'Connell.
Those are all names. You're like, what, that's Dallas and
Seattle folks coming up on Saturday at five o'clock. There
are things to watch for. There are a lot of
position battles.
Speaker 3 (53:52):
For both teams.
Speaker 2 (53:52):
We consider we're more concerned with Seattle obviously. Let me
start with what we saw last night on Hard Knocks.
You if I could Terry and Arnold and on Monday,
I was really actually I wasn't surprised to see what
we saw in Hard Knocks last night based on Monday
after practice, and we're all standing there and our own
Greg bell I started quizzing Mike McDonald his media availability
(54:16):
on Monday about Terry and Arnold and and McDonald was
like very forthright about usually you hear like, well, you know,
you know they kind of dodge stuff. He's like, yeah, no,
we're looking at it. And all these kinds of things
and had a good workout and we're waiting to see
what happens and all these things. Let me ask you
the question, do they need Terry and Arnold?
Speaker 6 (54:36):
Well, you'd have to find need. It's not binary. It's
multiple shades of gray, right. I think on some level
I'll dance with you because I understand the intent of
the question. I don't I feel like I don't want
to say need, but I think he would be as
a player. I think there'd be, you know, somewhat of
(54:58):
a significant addition with him if you know he plays
to his potential and you've got you know, staff on
the Seahawks that coached him in Alabama. I think that
there's a view of the Seahawks depth chart where I
(55:18):
thought going to the Super Bowl that if I was
the Patriots, Uh, the one guy I would target on
the defense is Josh Job.
Speaker 3 (55:28):
I said that.
Speaker 6 (55:28):
I said that before the Super Bowl. Ye, and it's
a really good defense. And that's not an indictment on
Josh Job. I'm just saying, if if I was going
against I, if I had to find something resembled not
a pigeon, but just something of a slightly weak link
in the defense would be Josh job, now you lose,
you know, And that that was when Tarik Wollen was
on the field. So I do think that cornerback is
(55:51):
their least deep I guess that would be shallowest, the
shallowest position on the team offense or defense. And and
uh yeah, so I understand the desire to try and
upgrade the cornerback position. That is a completely different proposition
(56:11):
than saying that the juice is you know, worth the
squeeze on this.
Speaker 2 (56:16):
That's the question though, right because I mean, and I
want to be careful how I phrase this, hubet, but
like you know, they teams do their due diligence, right
and they they you know, you're not just like, yeah,
Detroit cut him boom right off the get go when
those eight charges came down. I think his hearing, he's
(56:37):
got a hearing tomorrow. If I'm not mistaken on those charges.
He's maintained innocence. And and you know, then you then
you start digging into it. All these teams have their
own security teams, and most of those are really highly
experienced former law enforcement people that know how to do
such things. The NFL does the same thing, and and
(56:58):
and so forth. But yeah, I mean Witherspoon, Iggy Pritchett,
Dansby job. Uh you know, I mean we started looking
through the list, Shamar Jean Charles been here forever, right,
you got a bunch of these guys. It feels like
the drop off if you're trying to you're trying to
keep pace. I guess you right with the Rams, Like
if we're being honest, like and they're they're really good.
(57:19):
And what's what's a what's a place on your roster
that you could upgrade? You're telling me you could probably
upgrade the quarterback position.
Speaker 6 (57:27):
Correct, Yeah, well, if you're going against Matthew Stafford, sure,
I wouldn't, you know, base the entire argument on that,
because I could see I could see it both ways.
If you told me that John Schneider when he is
driving to and from work, he can't get the rhymes
out of his mind, and he's like, hey, we gotta
somehow catching them, you know, somehow.
Speaker 3 (57:49):
Not that he'd be give to you know, two.
Speaker 6 (57:52):
Hoots about what Vegas said, but he's aware that the
Rams maybe have passed them in the eyes of most people,
and so maybe maybe that is a decision on the
other hand, you could convince me that it's really not
Ram dictated whatsoever. It's just him wanting the Seahawks to
always reach their maximum potential. And he might bristolfully say
(58:13):
that's a Ram decision. So I I think either passes
the sniff test for me.
Speaker 2 (58:20):
Let's talk about the defense on Saturday, h we assume
and and you know he hasn't. He's basically said they're
not going to play many starters, if any at all.
We'll get to the offense in a second. But you
know Williams Murphy, Breid Lawrence, Uh, you know, guys like that,
Ernest Jones, Drake Thomas, Nuosu. You know we just talked
about Witherspoon, Joel Bacatta Love. Those types of guys probably
(58:41):
aren't going to see a lot of time. So when
Dallas has the football, where is where will Hugh Millen's
eyes be trained to just off the I mean, I
know you'll look at the tape later, but what like
the what's the when they when you sit down on
Saturday and you're watching this thing and you're saying, Okay,
Dallas is on offense, there's Joe Milton at quarterback, and
and what are you watching.
Speaker 6 (59:00):
Yeah, and I'm going to answer that question if I
could just for a second, apologies, but can I just
make one final thought on Terry and Ardold.
Speaker 3 (59:09):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (59:09):
So, look, I think all of us fans, we can
kind of see the conundrum that they're in. They need
a corner. Here's a guy, you know, a talented guy.
They're wrestling with the optics of it all. Like we
can all kind of get that. I think the one
one component that I think I can interject into it
is just my experience that we should pause for a
(59:30):
second and say, say that they are looking at football character,
perhaps distinguished from off the field character, whatever happened off
the field, if they can reconcile that legally, and you know, really,
the fifth, sixth, and fourteenth Amendments together comprise what we
(59:51):
call due process right, and the idea of the presumption
of innocence is important. Now we're not bound to that
in the court of public opinion. The Seahawks are not
bound to that with their personnel decisions. But I think
on some level one man's opinion mind, I think we should,
you know, kind of have some some of those those
Fitth Amendment principles in our mind. Like, hey, the guy
(01:00:11):
is in this and until proven guilty, you know, maybe
it's it's a mistake there and and you know certainly
the Ravens thought that about ray Lewis and and and
and there's other examples. So uh but but getting back
to the football character part of it, you know, uh,
there are been, there have been many who are kind
of knuckleheads off the field. But if they if they're
(01:00:34):
great teammates, selfless teammates, practice hard, are burning competitors, do
things the right way. Those kind of of players, if
they're good and of course there's always a case of hey,
what do you bring in as a player, But if
they're good and they have that that football character, a
lot of clubs are willing to to try and manage
(01:00:55):
the off the field stuff because they recognize this impeccable
football character and that happens. You know, it's not just
always a bad you know, he did this knuckleheaded thing. Well,
he's just going to be a drag h you know,
to to what we're trying to accomplish from a cohesiveness.
Speaker 3 (01:01:11):
No, not necessarily. It could be.
Speaker 6 (01:01:13):
They could be related, but they're not necessarily related. Just
that that's a thought as far as the defense, I
would say, you know, you just look in and you
say who is liable to contribute? I mean I would
expect that that you look at the defensive backs and uh,
(01:01:34):
you know that particularly the young guys. You're looking closely
at Bud Clark. That might be the first guy that
I'd be looking at.
Speaker 3 (01:01:42):
Julian Neil.
Speaker 6 (01:01:44):
I think that secondary because as we just said, the
secondary is a little bit of a week week link,
or at least from a depth standpoint, I'm very curious
with Bud Clark. Uh, you know, is he going to
be a back end guy more of a Code Bryant
replacement or now they started moving him down into the
(01:02:06):
box after the beginning of training camp. And then that
opens up the idea that in dime situations, and they
had thirty was either thirty six or thirty seven snaps
of dime in the Super Bowl is one of those
two that was the most in the season. Ian, so
that call it three dozen snaps of dime. And when
(01:02:26):
they do dime, they drop Witherspoon inside and so you
got that termed the overhang defenders, the guys that align
over the slot in two high structures, you got Emon
Warry on one side and Witherspoon on the other. Normally
in nicol Emon, Worry takes the field side and and
Drake Thomas is into the boundary. Then when you go dime,
(01:02:48):
then you've got em and Worry into the boundary and
Witherspoon to the field, covering the greatest amount of space.
So there's there's some responsibilities there if Bud Clark can
give you kind of what Witherspoon can give you inside
and that's that's down near the line of scrimmage. Uh,
(01:03:10):
you could call it an outside linebacker. Certainly, it resembles
an outside linebacker in certain fronts and coverages. Then to me,
wait a minute, that you're talking about a varsity contributor
in a personnel group that what did I just say
three dozen snaps in the Super Bowl? You know that
that's that's what he wants, you know. So so that
is a real possibility, and and and and and so
(01:03:32):
I would say that's that's my uh my biggest question.
Speaker 3 (01:03:37):
You know, just the guys that the younger guys, you know.
Speaker 6 (01:03:40):
Devin Eastern, Yep, you know, I think they're gonna I
don't know if they're going to start, but but who
is the Nickel replace replacing? I mean I think it's
uh twenty three helped me Anthony Bell. Yeah, so the
Anthony Bell if he gets some I want to take
(01:04:00):
a long look at him, because you know, he might
be starting for the varsity against the Patriots are in
a few wednesdays from now.
Speaker 2 (01:04:09):
When you look at Bud Clark, do you see Bud
Clark as being a guy that can play down low
in the box.
Speaker 6 (01:04:13):
Like you said, I think Bud Clark can probably do
just about everything. And how do I know that Because
Mike McDonald wouldn't have interest in him if he couldn't
look look at look at this. Look at the safety
profile for the Seahawks. You've got Julian Love played corner
in college, Kobe Bryant Well not only played corner, won
(01:04:35):
the Thorpe Award as a corner.
Speaker 3 (01:04:38):
And then when the safety what what what is the what?
What is the uh?
Speaker 6 (01:04:42):
The scouting report on Bud Clark for a safety thin
kind of smallish but great great uh uh you know,
quickness and smooth transitions and can cover ground and uh
you know, great instincts and what have you hyper competitors,
So so he just fits the profile. I mean, I
think there's there's people, you know, Ian, there's people in
(01:05:04):
that building that think that Bud Clark was Mike McDonald's
number one favorite player on the draft board.
Speaker 3 (01:05:09):
Stop hard stop, ye, like.
Speaker 6 (01:05:12):
Of all the players, right right. I'm not saying all
the second rounders that were available. I'm talking about all
the players. And so I want to, uh, I want
to see what what you know, you know, just glimpse
you know the nuances of what Mike McDonald loves about
Bud Clark. So you asked me what's possible for for
(01:05:34):
Bud Clark, I would say everything.
Speaker 2 (01:05:37):
Let's side of the other side of the football humiling
with us on Saturday five o'clock Seahawks and the and
the Dallas Cowboys. So you know, the starters on offense,
we're not going to see dudes out there. We're gonna
We've seen Drew Locke a lot. So let me start
with the quarterback position for a second. If you want
to touch it on lock, feel free to do so.
Uh it's I'm you know, uh, guest choice here, analyst choice.
(01:05:59):
But Jalen Milroe interested to see there? What are you
looking for there?
Speaker 4 (01:06:04):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (01:06:05):
I absolutely I'm interested in, Jalen Milroe. I mean, and
by the way, as it pertains to preseason football, i'd
be Now, you're very in tuned to these numbers because
of of Q thirteen and what have you. So year
you would know better than me. But I would bet
a steak dinner on the spot that the Seahawks will
(01:06:25):
outdraw the Mariners by a pretty substantial like the Seahawks
preseason games will outdraw the Mariners this and it really
won't be close.
Speaker 3 (01:06:33):
Brought right on that. We brought that up earlier.
Speaker 2 (01:06:35):
I said, listen, I'm the World Cup US World Cup
match here had a big number, but by and large,
on a normal year, when you get to August, you'll
have AFC, NFC championship games and all that. Right, But
if you're ranking like the most watched television broadcasts before
September first, Super Bowl is always number one for a
(01:06:58):
calendar year, and normally Seahawk preseason games one, two, and
three if back in the day when there were four,
are two, three, and four in the list.
Speaker 6 (01:07:06):
So there you go, Yes, Ncrop, Yeah, no, no, that's it,
And that's that's actually consistent with just about every city
in the country as well. Yeah, yeah, you're you're I know,
for this decade, the championship game's average forty six million,
and the average regular season is eighteen million. So you know,
they're they're just staggering numbers, right, particularly when you compare
(01:07:27):
it to all the other sports. But but so so there,
there's that with the preseason games and and so it's
it's become a watered down product. I mean, I hate
to preface it, you know, when I played, you know,
but let's go, if we go back a generation or
two ago, the the starters would play the first half, right,
(01:07:49):
and or at least now not not not in Game one,
they play at least the first quarter, right, and then
give way some point in the second quarter, and then
they'd ramp it up at every game they play at
least a quarter. And then in the last preseason game,
not the second to last, the last preseason game, they
would play a half plus a series into the.
Speaker 2 (01:08:07):
Third quarters, like going into halftime coming out for the
second half. Yeah yeah, and if you just you could
just graph it the the amount of plays that starters get.
And it's just been a slow decline over forty years. Right,
So that having been said, they're still intrig Jalen Milroe.
Here's what's interesting to me. If you created a.
Speaker 6 (01:08:30):
Pyramid like the John Wooden pyramid of I don't know
of organizational structure, whatever you called it. If you had
a pyramid style where there's the blocks that compose quarterbacking.
In my opinion, there's a lot of things in there.
You know, quick release, you know quick feet, what have
your arm strength, There's a lot of things where you're
(01:08:50):
looking and you say, yeah, if you have those in abundance,
that's going to make you a better quarterback. But but
there's really only at the very top of the pyramid
the thing that is non negotiable that you can't You
cannot cite a quarterback who didn't have this all the
other things I can. I can cite you quarterbacks with big,
long releases, you know Randall Cunningham. I could cite you
(01:09:14):
quarterbacks that didn't have quick feet. Uh, you know, Tom Brady,
I could, I could even cite you. This sounds like,
you know, it's gonna hurt your your football soul. But
but guys that weren't great leaders. Jay Cutler made a
Pro Bowl, Joe Thaisman won a Super Bowl. I mean,
you know, a lot of teammates reportedly couldn't stand that
guy like so, but there's one thing you cannot show
(01:09:36):
me any quarterback who was successful who didn't process throw
it to the right guy at the right time with accuracy.
And the pair and the paradox with Jaylen mro guys
is that if you and you know, I studied him
hard before the draft, and then I started studied him
even more after the draft. I've looked at every rep
(01:09:56):
of him at Alabama, and the pair is that Milroe
gives you in spades all of the other things, the leadership,
the strong arm, the quick feel like all the things
that you want. But you it's not mandatory. You know,
there's there's uh necessary conditions and sufficient conditions. The necessary
(01:10:20):
condition is throw it to the right guy at the
right time with accuracy. And that's Those are the aspects
of him that are the worst on on his scouting report.
All the other things that you want but don't need,
he's great. The two things that you need non negotiable.
That's the worst part of his game. So it's a
(01:10:41):
great Petri dish about coaching and whether or not he
can improve from college to the pros. On the on
the most important aspects of quarterbacking. So we're gonna get
a lot of you know, we're gonna get three pretty
long looks at this guy and you no, no, no,
just you know, watch it from that perspective for a second,
because you're going to see all those things. You're going
(01:11:03):
to see the beautiful athletics. And by the way, he's
a hell of a leader.
Speaker 3 (01:11:06):
Yep.
Speaker 6 (01:11:06):
I had a long talk with his head coach, uh
and and his head coach raves about him as a leader,
and so hu. You know, but but there again, how
is he throwing to the right guy? And is he
throwing at the right time. That's the difficulty of quarterbacking
(01:11:26):
is can you see the movie before it happens? I
can't say that enough. You can put it on a
loop and repeat me ten times. If you want to
know my opinion, you have to see the movie before
it happens. There's a lot of moving parts out there.
And when you when your mind sees what the defense
looks and you say green light, go, I'm gonna throw
it out to that spot. You know, football players don't
(01:11:48):
throw footballs at one hundred miles an hour like baseball pitchers.
Football players throw footballs at about fifty five miles an hour,
which means the ball is on a relative scale floating,
which defenders can move a lot to react to the
ball right and you know the ball's only in the
air for twenty yards for a pitcher, and it's going
(01:12:10):
one hundred miles an hour. You know, the ball can
be in there for thirty five yards and it's going
half the speed. So you have to be able to say,
if I throw to that guy into that spot, all
of these players in his vicinity are gonna move a lot.
What's their vertical leverage, what's their horizontal leverage, where's their hips?
(01:12:30):
What's their personnel? How much have I studied? How much
can that guy ground? Can that guy cover? You have
to process is numerous factors in a hideously short amount
of time, far less than a second, far less than
a half of a second. And so that's why there's
only about fifteen guys on the planet out of thirty
eight million American men aged twenty two to thirty eight. Yeah,
(01:12:53):
I just picked that. It does seem like the range
that you'd have quarterbacks. I know there's some outside of that,
but there's thirty eight million Americans and there's less than
one in every two million.
Speaker 3 (01:13:03):
You've heard the say saying one in a million, there's
not even one.
Speaker 6 (01:13:06):
And two million that can play quarterback well at the
NFL because of the things that I'm talking about right here,
and and so Jalen Milroe, the biggest questions marks about
him coming out of Alabama are in the aspects that
are most important for success in the position.
Speaker 3 (01:13:24):
In my opinion. All Right, this is a this is
kind of a.
Speaker 2 (01:13:30):
Warm up for hardcore football, because this is how hardcore
football works in the fall with Hugh and I is
oftentimes I need more and uh, and I need one
more segment because I've got I've got to ask you
on the offensive side. And we'll do this in the
next segment because I don't want to cut you short here,
So I'm gonna ask you about the running back position.
(01:13:51):
I know you had strong feelings about walker or not
being here, so we move on from walker or not
being here. But Hugh, there are some and I'll set
it up for next segment. But let's just say I
don't even TJ Harden, Dayless Jones and Justin Jones are
probably the guys carrying the football on Saturday. Huh, we'll
talk about that next.
Speaker 1 (01:14:13):
Now, back Dean Furness on your home for the Huskies
Cracking and The Twelfth Man, brought to you by Seattle's
closest Snow call Me Casino and Hotel on Sports Radio
ninety three point three KJR FM.
Speaker 2 (01:14:28):
All right, a few more minutes with Hugh milling Here, Hugh,
let's wrap up our preseason What to watch for talk
five o'clock Saturday against the Dallas Cowboys. So Kenneth Walker Walks,
We know that he's gone. He's in Kansas City having
fights every day in practice. I exaggerate slately, but he
has had a few. The Seahawks draft Jadarian Price, thirty
second pick, final pick of the first round out of
(01:14:48):
Notre Dame. Never started the game in Notre Dame. You
and I were sitting next to each other when the
draft was pick was made. You had questions right off
the get go. Wait was one of them. And now
we find out he's missed a lot of prac This
is the last basically in the last four or five days.
Because of that, there's probably zero chance he plays on
Saturday against the Cowboys. Maybe wasn't going to play Anyway, Jaccarti,
(01:15:10):
your Wright, who was a long shot to make the team,
was probably number four in the depth chart, is also
seemingly out as well. And now Emmanuel Wilson is seemingly
banged up.
Speaker 3 (01:15:20):
He may not go.
Speaker 2 (01:15:21):
He hasn't practiced. God, you know that all of a
sudden huge Do you ever think I'd say the following
George Hollane might be in bubble wrap right now.
Speaker 3 (01:15:29):
For the Seahawks. I said that. I did say that.
So we let's talk about the running back position.
Speaker 2 (01:15:34):
We could talk about Jadarian, right, we can talk about
the rest of him, But how concerned are you?
Speaker 3 (01:15:40):
Pretty concerned? I think the world of Kenneth Walker. I
think he was.
Speaker 6 (01:15:46):
A guy that was just special, you know, top half
a dozen in the league from talent. Evidently the chiefs
kind of agree with that proposition. And so until we
see Jada and Price who you know, because he wasn't
the starter with Jeremiah Love, you know, he hasn't had
(01:16:06):
a real rigorous workload, and you know, the body mass
index Kenneth Walker, I'm going combine just five nine to
two eleven and uh and Price is five eleven two
oh three. So you can do the body mass index calculations.
You know, you just Kenneth Walker just a thicker man.
So my first impression that we discussed in eyeballing him
(01:16:29):
when they were in shorts the first few days in
camp is like, whoa, he's got skinny leg He's got
like wide receiver legs. So I am concerned about whether
or not he has the body mass index. I'll use
that term again to be able to take the hits
that you take when you're toting the rock in the NFL.
As for the guys we're going to see, the only
(01:16:50):
one that intrigues me is Jaccarti, right a little bit.
I think he's got a little bit of a chance
if he plays. You know, to me, Halani is you know,
whatever argument can be made for Harlani, it's more on
the lines of his versatility. He's like, he's like a
utility infielder. He can he had not not only can
(01:17:12):
he but he has returned kickoffs. He can you know,
he can run down on special teams, make tackles, he can,
he can pass, block, and what have you. He is
literally the embodiment of a jack of all trades and
master of note. And I know that sounds harsh. It
sounded harsh to my ears. I'm not here to dog
these guys, but we don't have much time. That's my analysis.
(01:17:34):
I'm not going to get excited about George Alane.
Speaker 2 (01:17:36):
Yeah, Veaylas Jones is probably going to be he might
be a lead back, he's been. He's an ultimate tweeter,
sometimes he's a receiver, sometimes he's a running back. And
the other guys they've picked up in the last couple
of weeks. I just mentioned Justin Jones and TJ.
Speaker 1 (01:17:48):
Harden.
Speaker 2 (01:17:48):
I mean, it's just it's somebody's got to carry the
ball in preseason game one, and it's just it's more
more than likely the guys carrying the ball in preseason
game one won't be on the fifty three man roster
more than likely, right, And that's hostly. I think that's
a concern. I mean, I know it's only August twelfth,
and it'll be August fourteenth or fifteenth, I guess when
the game happens. But I think that's worth noting. We
(01:18:09):
didn't tease this real quick. You you got a little
story you want to tell.
Speaker 3 (01:18:13):
Well, we teased it.
Speaker 6 (01:18:15):
We're talking about what the environment that a coach can create,
you know, So I get traded to the I'm traded
to the Cowboys after they won the first Super Bowl
with Aikman in that in that in that string there.
First preseason game we play the Vikings at home and
looked like crap. And Jimmy Johnson after preseason game number one,
his redwood red neck was like a tomade.
Speaker 3 (01:18:38):
He was so furious he was screaming.
Speaker 6 (01:18:40):
And the next practice we had down in training camp,
he ran a conditioning drill that, in my twenty five
years of playing football, was the most shocking drill I've
ever seen. He was furious, he was trying to instill,
you know, don't rest on your laurels. It was like
the intensity was off the chain. The CBA just doesn't
allow it. Now, fast forward to the regular season. We
lose the opener on Monday Night football against the Redskins.
(01:19:02):
We come home, lose a Super Bowl rematch at home
against Buffalo.
Speaker 3 (01:19:06):
We're oh and two. Now.
Speaker 6 (01:19:08):
The first meeting on the Monday after we're oh and
two at it was like somber. It was like a
freaking funeral, Like everybody was on tent, like, well, if
he did that against the Vike after the Viking game.
What's he gonna do now? Like like everybody was just
and and Jimmy Johnson walks in. Now he had he
had he was an industrial psychology major at Arkansas. I
don't know what the industrial tag does, but just work
(01:19:29):
with me. So he just comes in and he goes
and first words out of his mouth, he goes, Guy
walks into a bar.
Speaker 3 (01:19:36):
We're like, what.
Speaker 6 (01:19:40):
Hours later, it's last call, and I'm telling the story
exactly like he told it, basically word for word.
Speaker 3 (01:19:45):
It's last call. He's been hustling some broad for hours.
He says.
Speaker 6 (01:19:49):
They were want to come home with me. She gets
a disgusted look on her face, and she goes, I'm
not going home with you.
Speaker 3 (01:19:56):
You're drunk.
Speaker 6 (01:19:59):
Guy looks at her and says, fine, but tomorrow I'll
be sober, but you'll still be ugly.
Speaker 7 (01:20:10):
And ever.
Speaker 6 (01:20:11):
The whole the whole team, the whole team is just
cracking up. Jimmy Johnson gets this huge looking on his face,
smile on his face. He goes, listen, we're drunk. We
are drunk, but we're gonna get sober. And I'd rather
be drunk us than ugly Tampa Bay. And and that's
exactly the team that he did. He said, he said,
(01:20:31):
I'd rather be us than ugly like Tampa Bay and
uh and and he and from there, he just says,
let's go to your meetings at this big smile, everybody
whooped a hole and and so he had this sense
of like, whoah, you know, there's enough pressure on my team.
These guys are the Dallas Cowboys defending SUPERAM World champions.
(01:20:52):
Oh and two, there is enough coming down on him.
I gotta change the environment massively. And so look, how
does that apply to Dan Wilson's intuition and instincts about
how he needs to create a change the environment. I
have no idea football is better different than baseball. You
get different personalities, all the things that are obvious. But
there's a story of a guy looking at, you know,
(01:21:16):
what needs to happen with his team and know, by
the way, from that that joke on we were thirteen
and one, went to the playoffs and won the Super
Bowl convincingly for a back to back. So then there's
an example of Jimmy Johnson knowing his football team.
Speaker 3 (01:21:32):
I love it.
Speaker 2 (01:21:32):
Good stuff, And I'm not sure if that's the case
here with our guy. All right, all right, great stuff.
Speaker 3 (01:21:36):
I'll talk to him.
Speaker 2 (01:21:38):
Because it is a preseason friendly zone. I will check
with you Monday after that preseason game.
Speaker 3 (01:21:44):
Sir, thanks A. That's a great here. Melon will take
a break, come back. Our number three coming up next.
Speaker 1 (01:21:52):
No from the Star Rentals Sports to us Jordan ninety
three point three kJ RFM Sports headlines.
Speaker 3 (01:21:58):
All right, headlines are brought to you by Frostbrewed Light.
Choose chill.
Speaker 2 (01:22:01):
Lots going on in sports today. We'll start with the
baseball team. They have game two of their series of
the Yankees coming up today that I think it's an
ESPN game, by the way.
Speaker 3 (01:22:10):
I should point that out. It's not. Indeed, yes, in fact,
and I think Tomorrow's is tomorrow TBS. This is something like.
Speaker 4 (01:22:18):
Yeah, it's got like And they also play Sunday Night
Baseball and a lot of yea, you know, weird when
you play the Yankees. Lots of maybe it's Sunday's Sunday's Astros. Yeah,
maybe Sunday's a TBS game.
Speaker 3 (01:22:28):
I'm not sure.
Speaker 2 (01:22:28):
Anyway, they lost the Yankees for one game one of
the series last night game too A s Nightprice Miller
on the Mound four and a half back of the
Astros in the Al West four back of the Wildcard
with six teams to jump there. Seahawk's episode two Hard
Knocks came out last that. We'll discuss that in a second.
NBA Light Lakers sold Josh Kushner Bob Iger for twelve
point five billion dollars. Speaking of that, new group has
(01:22:51):
come forward with a bid Dubai an NBA expansion franchise
here in Seattle. According to the practica, the presser Leak,
Black Sun, Private Equity, Native World Sports and Regional Partners
allowance a bid to bring the NBA back to Seattle
seems about as sketchy as can be, but we'll see
how it all plays out over the next little while.
(01:23:14):
Russell Westbrook has retired. Former Sonic draft pick never played
here obviously went to Oklahoma City year one draft pick
in eight has decided to retire.
Speaker 3 (01:23:23):
Here we go our three.
Speaker 1 (01:23:27):
Now back Dean Furness on your home for the Huskies,
Cracking and the Twelfth Man, brought to you by Seattle's
closest Snow Call me Casino and Hotel on Sports Radio
ninety three point three kjr FM.
Speaker 2 (01:23:44):
All right, we'll get to your texts coming up at
twelve thirty. Also, a lot of the talkbacks go to
the red iHeartRadio microphone iHeartRadio app Red Microphone Speak thirty
seconds the way you go. Whatever you want to say, thoughts, comments,
questions concerned. Same with the text line four nine, four
to five one to coma dootch text line fire away
my friend Anderson Hurst. Hi, I'm gonna get away from
(01:24:05):
our baseball team. We'll get to them when I'm sure
our text will be There'll be plenty, they'll be plentiful there.
We'll get to those coming up at at two thirty.
Speaker 3 (01:24:12):
Today, My takes are getting flamed on the text line
all yours are, Yeah, what was Okay, I won't read
the text yet, but what was? What was your take?
Speaker 4 (01:24:21):
They got in flamed that Dan Wilson should be fired
and it's his fault. Again, I never said it was
his fault. But it doesn't mean you can't do it.
Hugh Millon said it perfectly in my opinion. Yeah, like
the pilot analogy, Yep, it's a great, you know, description
of what's going on right now.
Speaker 3 (01:24:38):
With the Barriners. I think that's a good way to
put it.
Speaker 2 (01:24:40):
Yes, I don't know it, and I don't Here's the
one thing that I would mention about that. God, I
just hate Dan such a good dude, and I don't
want to.
Speaker 3 (01:24:51):
And it's ruining his legacy. Yeah, I've and I've really
kind of stayed away from it. It's not too late. No,
that's the thing. It's not too late.
Speaker 5 (01:25:02):
Now.
Speaker 2 (01:25:03):
Again, if you want to think, I don't even we
don't even know. But I mean, just ire if we're
guessing based on how things are going right now, if
you're just guessing, yes, it was gonna talk to Mary,
I'll get the seat X on a second. But if
you're just guessing on what it will take to get
in to the postseason. And when I say get in, I.
Speaker 4 (01:25:21):
Mean probably when your division, when your division, Because it
doesn't appear that you can get in in the wildcard now,
I mean I guess you could, but.
Speaker 3 (01:25:29):
You could, you could.
Speaker 4 (01:25:30):
That's sevent teams for one spot.
Speaker 2 (01:25:33):
Actually, I'm going to assume that I'm going to assume
that that this is going to get you in because
the third wildcard spot's a team that's five hundred and
that's Texas. Everybody else. Detroit's a game under five hundred
and a half game out. Minnesota's two games under, they're
one game out, Cleveland four games under, they're two out.
Toronto is five games under, they're two and a half out,
(01:25:54):
as is Baltimore. And then Seattle is four out of
a wildcard spot and they're eight under five hundred. So
let's just assume eighty two wins will get you in.
That puts you two games above five hundred. The Mariners
have to go twenty six and sixteen the rest of
the way to get to eighty two wins.
Speaker 3 (01:26:11):
Can they do it? Yes, yes they can, answers one
hundred percent. Yes they can. If I'm just asking, can
the answer? Can they? Yes? They can. When was service
fired August twenty second something like that, Yeah, I'll double
not too late, double check that date not too late.
Speaker 4 (01:26:28):
Well, I mean, yeah, they didn't make the playoffs that
year of service got fired, but they that they were
giving it a go.
Speaker 3 (01:26:35):
They were, They absolutely were.
Speaker 4 (01:26:36):
They got back in it. And if one would argue,
if you did it earlier than that, you might have
been able to. But the other thing, the other thing
that Hugh mentioned that I think is a great way
to frame it is, do you think the Mariners right
now for this season, would have a better chance to
have a successful season keeping Dan Wilson or by making
(01:26:57):
a change right now.
Speaker 3 (01:26:58):
I just I honestly, I can't to that because I
don't know who the change is. I just think any change,
any change. Here's the thing. Willie came in, he was
known to the play. This is the one thing.
Speaker 2 (01:27:07):
I think this tends to be forgotten. When Dan came in,
he was a known commodity, popular guy. Yes, players knew him.
A lot of them grew up around him in terms
of coming up through the organization. Catcher, so he was
cal friendly. He was pitcher friendly. So Dan Wilson was.
(01:27:27):
I think you could make an argument Dan Wilson was
very unique for that role. Doesn't appear that there's anybody
in the organization that would have that same cache, because
what was Dan's job to come in and kind of
unite the clubhouse?
Speaker 1 (01:27:40):
Right?
Speaker 3 (01:27:41):
If you bring somebody in here, it's a totally different deal.
You're bringing someone in here to shake up the clubhouse
and to fire them up. And I don't know. If
I don't know who that guy is, I just don't.
I don't know.
Speaker 4 (01:27:52):
The easy answer for me would be Alex Cora, a
Brave World Series champion manager.
Speaker 2 (01:27:58):
I think that's a hard sell that all I know.
But he got fired and the team's been significantly better
since then. Yeah, so I think that's a hard sell
in a sense, it would be. I think the best
thing to do is you stay the course at this point.
Speaker 3 (01:28:09):
Wait till the off season.
Speaker 2 (01:28:10):
Wait till the off season. I mean, you're gonna listen,
You're gonna have a long ass off season as it is.
You're not gonna start on time. Wait till then. Did
you watch Hard Knocks?
Speaker 3 (01:28:19):
I did? What do you think it made me love
with the Seahawks even more? It's funny you say that,
I said, My kids said the exact same thing. It's crazy,
exact same.
Speaker 4 (01:28:26):
Thing, because I think what happened with the lob Era
was everything was out there, right. They didn't really hide
any secrets. There were no secrets there really weren't. That's
a great point. There were none.
Speaker 3 (01:28:37):
And I didn't really get that same vibe with this
current team.
Speaker 4 (01:28:41):
And you know, you don't really see a ton of
personality and press conferences and even micd up stuff here
and there.
Speaker 2 (01:28:46):
You know, the biggest personality saw last years Ernest Jones
defending Sam Dark exactly.
Speaker 3 (01:28:50):
But that was it. I got two words for you. Yeah,
only one we can say, and that's off like you right. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:28:58):
But like the way Mike McDonald handle the Derek Hall situation,
I loved the shadow boxing was so cool just to
see like the little nuances and stuff like that. I
think what makes a good Hard Knocks episode is like,
give me a feeling that I'm seeing something about the camaraderie,
the chemistry, the group of players, and the culture that
(01:29:19):
the Seahawks have built.
Speaker 2 (01:29:20):
So let me just tell you a quick story because
you've you heard me tell this story before, right when
Turney Camp started about how connected they were. Remember this
story when I said, a Seahawks staffer told me that
on the eve of the Super Bowl, this person was
walking into a meeting or doing something had not even
really football related, just whatever, and he saw two players,
(01:29:46):
one a rookie wasn't a big part of who they
were last year, another one was a vested veteran and
they were doing the shadow boxing thing in the hallway
outside of a conference room or something ballroom. Yeah, but
the interaction between these two guys, you could not have
had two guys more opposite in terms of stature background.
(01:30:10):
One was white, one was black, like different races, different everything.
And they were doing this and this guy said, I
knew we're gonna win at that point because I see
this connected who we are and that's what we do.
And it's funny because during and I said that, I
think I was the first day camp I talked about that,
I told that story and yeah, because the story was
(01:30:31):
told to me on the Saturday of camp. We didn't
do a show, and I told the story on the Monday.
And I'm watching this thing last night and Mike McDonald
talks about the shadow boxing and how it just brings
guys together, that competition, but just the camaraderie. My son
was telling you last night. That's a big thing in
football locker rooms now, but not everybody has fun with it.
Not everybody does it. It's a big, big deal for
(01:30:52):
these guys, and it just shows doesn't matter who you are.
It's almost like you know, rock papercisers on steroids, as
McDonald said, you just walk up to a guys, you
start doing it. You feel comfortable doing that, right, It's
just it's it's so I thought I thought that was
kind of a cool part of the.
Speaker 4 (01:31:05):
Thing reminded me a lot of when Pete Carroll about
the basketball hoop in the meeting room.
Speaker 2 (01:31:09):
Yes, great point. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, the kind of thing. Yeah,
we're going to do this, and and away we go.
The the Derek Hall stuff is fascinating, Yeah, because we
also knew Derek Hall from this. Do you remember the
Jared Reid episode on the on the sideline when Reid
went after him and and these guys and they got
into it because Hall took a horrible penalty. It was
two years ago, right, and and like and McDonald had
(01:31:33):
the line at the end after you know, he rips him,
sends him to the sideline for a minute like he like,
it's just it's this guy.
Speaker 3 (01:31:42):
Every day.
Speaker 2 (01:31:42):
It's going to be something with d Hall. And he said,
that's the reason we love you is the reason you
drive us crazy. I'm paraphrasing you love Listen. Derek Hall's
compete level, his level of toughness.
Speaker 3 (01:31:56):
He's with the line, as Mike said, he's right on
the line.
Speaker 2 (01:31:59):
Yeah, you need a couple of those guys on your team.
And the thing is is when they won it the
first time, they had a lot of those guys, maybe
too many. Chris Clemens was really that guy to the
point of being unlikable in a lot of ways, even
for teammates. Percy was probably that way, but you had
(01:32:20):
probably too many of those guys. You could get away
with it because she or any of those other guys
that were on that line, so to speak.
Speaker 3 (01:32:30):
But I think, like.
Speaker 2 (01:32:31):
Sharam was so small, I can't see sherm hit, you know,
coming close to a quarterback.
Speaker 3 (01:32:36):
But I know, I know they did that stuff with Russ.
But you know, I'm watching with Keith for last night
and he says, like d Lineman just I knew he
would say that too.
Speaker 2 (01:32:49):
But then we watched a play in which I think
it was Nuosu had the same play where he kind
of went around, he got by cross and he just
kept going out on the way outside like he just
knew what to do. D Hall hasn't figured that out yet.
He hasn't quite figured out that, But God, that's why
you want him on. You want Derek Hall on your
football team, abs Like, you want that dude on your team,
(01:33:10):
and you want him to be there doing Derek Hall stuff,
just not you know, because it's just the simple ast thing.
How often have we seen quarterbacks hit their hand on
a helmet and then they're out for six weeks with
a broken thumb, like on a follow through.
Speaker 4 (01:33:24):
And I love how McDonald kind of embraces that side
of him and it's like, Hey, I'm not going to
change who you are, but that doesn't mean I'm not
going to be a hard ass on you when you
scoll Just use.
Speaker 2 (01:33:32):
Your head a little bit, right, Like, just give your
head a shake and stop it, like just stop it.
But and then but then, how how he is able
afterwards to go from just tearing this guy apart and
and Derek knows it's on TV, like he like, he
knows he's miked up and all these hell I think
Derek Halls miked up that day. He was like and
(01:33:54):
but then McDonald that's just who he is. He's like
he's able to then diffuse it later and do that.
I thought that was sensational. Yes, uh, the the was
the Richmond Riley Mills thing.
Speaker 3 (01:34:06):
Yep, that was cool. Yeah, sledgehammer holding.
Speaker 2 (01:34:09):
I'm telling you right now, we saw Riley Mills on Monday.
I put a put a couple of pictures on social
media when he's doing his post his press conference. Yeah,
has never Like when he went up there, I'm like,
I don't, I don't. I don't have to tell you
if I wish I could bet on this thing right now,
because because I don't know who wins it. But I
saw that cat's arms and I'm like, he ain't losing
(01:34:30):
many strength contests, no chance about Sorry, go ahead, but
I mean just I Riley Mills, Riley Mills is going
to make a name for himself this year.
Speaker 3 (01:34:38):
I truly do believe that. What else do you asked?
How about the interaction between JSN and his prison Jackson.
I loved it.
Speaker 4 (01:34:44):
A little bit of strife between the two. Jasn's like, hey,
what what do you mean? Like miscommunication stuff like that.
But you also see that happens in every locker room.
Speaker 2 (01:34:53):
You see the competitor in him, like JSN is in
you know, I mean Chrismin said it. You like this
guy's like so understated he's and we've been talking about
that throughout camp. You watch how he goes about his business, right,
how JSN does his thing, Like there is no look
at me, there is no diva, there's no you don't
throw it to me. I'm gonna pull an AJ Brown
and throw temper tantrum that that's not who this cat is.
Speaker 5 (01:35:16):
He just is.
Speaker 3 (01:35:16):
He is just a pro man.
Speaker 2 (01:35:18):
But he also has a compete level that's like, you
don't get to his level without having this compete level
that's uber high, and he has that. I mean, I
I think I find myself appreciating him more every day
at practice when I watch JSN play and then we're
getting to see him on screen and he's just you know,
the personality is just mellow.
Speaker 3 (01:35:37):
He's just you know, it's just it's just mellow and
all that. I thought that was good. I thought it
was a great episode. I really did. I think.
Speaker 2 (01:35:45):
I I'm hoping Seahawk fans appreciate it too, because you know,
for so long we've been waiting and hoping that this
would be you know, that our team would be on there.
But the old rules of well, either first year head coach,
if it's a first year head coach, can't do it,
or if you had a playoff appearance right, you couldn't
do it right. And they, I mean the one year
(01:36:08):
they missed the playoffs in what twenty seventeen I think
it was, I was twenty seventeen or twenty eighteen one
tho two years when they was twenty twenty one. But yeah, yeah,
twenty twenty one was Yeah, that was just that was
a disaster year. He was never going to buy into it.
He just wasn't, which is weird because at USC everything
was open and here we go he got to the
NFL and man, stuff was shut down early.
Speaker 3 (01:36:29):
Maybe it wasn't a peat thing that he didn't want it. No,
I think it was.
Speaker 2 (01:36:33):
I think it was everybody thing, you know. I think
you know mc McDonald embraced it. But those are the
ones that jumped out at me. The fact they're making
Derek call this this crazy character.
Speaker 3 (01:36:43):
It's kind of fun.
Speaker 4 (01:36:44):
Yeah, but a lot of people saying, oh, he's getting
a lot of shots taken at him in the first
couple episodes.
Speaker 3 (01:36:48):
I don't see it that way.
Speaker 2 (01:36:49):
I don't think No, I think you're getting inside who
he is. Yeah, And I'm glad they told because he
didn't tell the story the first weekend. Glad they told
the story yesterday because we heard the story of the
day he was drafted. It's been talked about a bunch
of times since then time since then as well, that
you know when he when he was born, he was
not only premature, but he was like there is he
(01:37:11):
had a term for big time premie, right, like whatever
that term that he knew what the term was, and
he talked about showed how big he was. It's less
than two pounds. I mean, you just had a child.
Can you fathom that?
Speaker 3 (01:37:22):
That scared the crap out of me. Man, anything like that.
Speaker 2 (01:37:25):
So like anytime your wife when she was pregnant and
wasn't too far along and feels pain. And the weird
thing is is no matter who you are, you feel
pains in your body all the time. Well, if you're pregnant,
then it's it's magnified, and you know, for your for
your wife, I mean, I'm sure, and that's scary. I mean,
it's been twenty almost twenty four years since my guy
(01:37:47):
was born, right, and so it's been a while since
my youngest. I remember the stress involved with that I
couldn't even fathom. And then, god, can you imagine you
have a two pound baby? I mean, my daughter spent
a week in the hospital after she was born, actually
came home for two days and went back for a
week for some stuff.
Speaker 3 (01:38:02):
And it was terrifying. That was two pounds is like wow,
and the guy look at the guy.
Speaker 4 (01:38:08):
Now, seriously, you would never know the dude now, man
absolute machine out there.
Speaker 3 (01:38:15):
And they made a choice.
Speaker 2 (01:38:17):
They made a choice do we extend Derek call or
do we keep boy and mafe and extend him and
let Hall walk next year? It really kind of became
it was it was kind of a softy. You can
only have one, and that's what they did. And there's
a reason you see that. Yes, Boy and Mafey didn't
have that same motor. He didn't have that same he
didn't have the same power setting the edge things like that. Now,
(01:38:40):
I think Boye has maybe a little more upside in
terms of pure pass rush moves. But Hall is such
a powerful dude, and with the roster they have, they
just they that's what they need.
Speaker 4 (01:38:50):
You know that we have so many of those guys
with this Mike McDonald team that I think that's what
they value now.
Speaker 3 (01:38:56):
He just drives the offensive line crazy. I can tell.
It's like, dude, your son was probably saying that, Well.
Speaker 2 (01:39:02):
What he and any offensive lineman will tell you this.
At any level when you're doing those types of drills
and the defense knows that it's a pass right, they
know they know they're doing two minute drill. Whatever it is,
it's going to be a pass. Well, the bull rush
is that much easier because there's no threat of a
run run, Like you just got your ears pinned back
(01:39:23):
and away you go and there's nothing an offensive lineman
can do. I mean, Cross is really a good player,
and you saw him get beat a lot, and you
saw Lucas got pushed back a couple of times because
they have momentum. And the point of the drill is
not for Derek call to prove that he can bowl
rush a guy when the guy when when everyone knows
it's a pass play. The point of the drill is
let the offense get some work done. And he was
(01:39:45):
having none of that. Again, I want that guy on
my team a day. I want that guy on my team.
I think he's going to have a massive year. I
think he's just gonna have a massive year. I'm so like,
we just spent all that time talking with you about
the second ear and do they need Terry Arnold And
I think that's a whole different conversation. I will see
Jim Harbaugh or John Harbaugh talked about him today he
visited the Giants and he said the same stuff McDonald did.
(01:40:07):
I mean, I don't know if Seattle's truly great. Says
they're the front of the line. I don't know if
they're the front of the line.
Speaker 3 (01:40:12):
I really don't. I you know, I think a lot of.
Speaker 2 (01:40:14):
Teams want to pay him the minimum. Maybe somebody will
pay him little bit more if he gets exonerated.
Speaker 3 (01:40:19):
It's a big if.
Speaker 2 (01:40:22):
I just have I have some doubts. That's eight felony
charges are all now, they're all kind of bound together.
But I have I have, I have my doubts in
that regard.
Speaker 4 (01:40:36):
But with a team that's as centric around culture as
we have seen and in hu months at it right
that there can be guys that do some weird stuff off.
Speaker 3 (01:40:46):
The field that he brings up Michael Irvan all the time.
Fantastic Michael.
Speaker 2 (01:40:49):
He talks about Michael Ivan maybe being the best teammate
ever had. And yeah, we all know Michael had some
issues off the field, sure you know, and and did
his thing. But I mean he's a hall of famer,
hall of fame teammate, hall of famer in the locker room,
hall of fame practice player was was was Michael Irvin.
But yeah, but so we talk about the secondary being
a concern. I'm telling you guys this, I just look
(01:41:10):
at it again running this the running back room. I
think that'll that's health related right now. I mean, we
don't know if Jadarian Price can be a good NFL player.
I'm gonna trust I'm gonna trust in them as scouts.
They took him in the first round with the three like,
I'm gonna trust that they knew what they were doing
with the skill. We just don't know if he can
(01:41:31):
stay healthy. He's never had a burden of a load
like he's gonna have in the NFL. Hallane's like Houston,
He's a He's a utility player.
Speaker 5 (01:41:40):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:41:41):
And then I thought Jaccarti a Wright was going to
be a dude and at least pushed in the preseason.
Speaker 3 (01:41:45):
He's not.
Speaker 2 (01:41:46):
He can't eve get on the field right now with injuries.
And Emmanuel Wilson is the same way. So yeah, I'm
a little concerned there. The place I'm not concerned is upfront.
Man Williams, Murphy, Reed, Lawrence Hall, Peelee Mills, single Toon
is going to be a dude. I think Devin Eastern
could make this team.
Speaker 3 (01:42:04):
Up front. They're going to be just fine on the defense.
Speaker 4 (01:42:06):
Also, slight underrated part of yesterday's episode was the Leonard
Williams part of it.
Speaker 3 (01:42:10):
Six Gardner what He's also a guy that when he
came here, he's a dude.
Speaker 5 (01:42:15):
Man.
Speaker 2 (01:42:15):
There were so many people that criticized that trade. So
many people that criticize that trade.
Speaker 3 (01:42:20):
He's just a dude.
Speaker 2 (01:42:21):
John Schneider knew what he's doing. I'm trading for this guy.
If we get to the playoffs, great, this is a
long term deal that I'm doing right now. And they
picked him up and he has been basically a pillar.
That's the first zone that has been really the turning
point of this defense. You know, I've told this story too.
You know who was a big part of that was
was Jared Reid. He came in right away, Jared Reid
(01:42:42):
took him in, Leonard Williams, Jaren Reied and I told
the story. I think I forget where we were was
someplace back east and might have been Williams's first game.
And after the game, we're trying to do stuff for
Fox thirteen and we're in a time crunch and Jared
was like, I'm gonna get you in a second. I
got to do this, and he looks over Leonard Williams goes,
he says, I'm like, hey, I talked to him, and
Leonard was kind of a little like news guy from
(01:43:03):
New York, right right right, New York didn't trust the
media so much. Letter goes, No, he's gonna talk to him.
I talked to Leonard Williams like just cool as hell
and like he knew Jared Reid ran that locker room.
Leonard Williams is starting to run that locker room now.
He's kind of taking that mantle high character guy. I
love the dude. All right, we'll take a break, come back.
We'll check your text next.
Speaker 1 (01:43:23):
Now back to Ian Furness on your Home for the
Huskies Cracking and The Twelfth Man, brought to you by
Seattle's closest Snow call Me Casino and Hotel on Sports
Radio ninety three point three kJ R FM.
Speaker 6 (01:43:39):
Ian, I don't want to be this guy, but too little,
too late. On Cow he waits for a five game
losing streak when they're the lowest point of the year,
they're eight games under, and now he wants to come
out like, I don't know, man, I don't know.
Speaker 4 (01:43:56):
I don't know.
Speaker 6 (01:43:57):
Make me believe something, Make me believe that it's going
to change something.
Speaker 5 (01:44:01):
I don't.
Speaker 3 (01:44:02):
I think it's too little, too late on Cow.
Speaker 6 (01:44:04):
I still love Cow, but it's just I don't know.
I think it's time to get rid of the manager.
Speaker 7 (01:44:12):
Look at the Red Sox.
Speaker 4 (01:44:13):
The Red Sox got rid of Kora and they have
turned it around, and they were different teams.
Speaker 5 (01:44:19):
Something has to be done.
Speaker 7 (01:44:21):
And as far as your.
Speaker 4 (01:44:21):
Question, if I could be excited if the Mariners came
back and beat the Astros, that would be hell yeah,
because even if we suck, we don't go as far
as we went.
Speaker 3 (01:44:34):
We got rid of the Astros, and that's all I
would be happy about. Love that. I love that.
Speaker 2 (01:44:41):
It's good, great couple of great ones. Well with col saying,
I don't know, he probably just you probably can't win.
I I'm glad he came out and sad what he did.
I'm glad he came out and stood up in front
of every you know, I thought it was actually I'm
gonna take a step back. I'm glad he did it.
(01:45:04):
I didn't like the timing. There's there's sort of one
real writer reporter on the road that's not team related,
and that's I think Divish is on the road this trip. Yes,
In fact, Daniel Kramer from MLB dot com isn't even
on this trip. He's got somebody else is covering it
(01:45:26):
for MLB dot com. He's taking this trip off. So like,
you're not going to get asked any questions that matter
outside of if Ryan does.
Speaker 4 (01:45:34):
And he's the one who prompted the Dane Wilson's getting
a lot of the heat.
Speaker 2 (01:45:37):
Right and so so credit Ryan for that for sure,
for sure, absolutely give give differ trade and rightfully so.
But like if you're going to do that, do that
when everybody else is there, Like do a home game?
Why didn't you do it Sunday? Why did you wait
till yesterday?
Speaker 3 (01:45:50):
What changed? Nothing? Same?
Speaker 2 (01:45:53):
But I'm glad he did it. I've said I'll ask
off to you. Can they go twenty six and sixteen?
That's probably what they have to do. They probably have
to go ten games above five hundred to get to
the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (01:46:06):
Can they do that? Uh? Don't we go text or talkbacks.
I'm listening to the talkback right now. I'll go through
some texts Yeah, dude, Joe Madden is out there for
the taking.
Speaker 8 (01:46:22):
MM.
Speaker 2 (01:46:24):
That's my problem with the whole firing dand thing is
that your you're recycling guys, and maybe there's a really
good manager out there.
Speaker 4 (01:46:33):
Really i'd want Alex Cora. Yeah, I know what we
talked about. He just got fired by Boston and look
what they're doing. But again, this is a I don't
think Boston thought it was an Alex Cora issue as
to why they weren't playing well. They needed to kick
up the backside for those players, and when you fire
a manager, that's what happens, right Yep. So he's obviously
(01:46:53):
won a World Series. How's the experience. Yes, yes, some
Seattle ties with the Joey Cors situations.
Speaker 2 (01:47:01):
Going back to our Sonic well, we'll get to tell
me when you're ready for the talkbacks. I'll read a
couple of these talking about the Sonic stuff earlier. The
new story that came out today somebody two six it's
the Jacama Tribe. The team's going to play in the
Sun Dome. That's awesome. Hey, the Sun Dome used to
be the home of a CBA team way back when
the day the Sun Kings Yakama sun Kings. Somebody's mad
(01:47:22):
and I'll read this and I'll respond to fight three.
It seems it's so disrespectful of people in their history
to refer to a tribe by their casino. I agree somewhat,
but we know of the Muckleshoot tribe. Why because of
the biggest and the best in the Northwest, you know,
still calling see How's closest casino and hotel, snocasino dot com,
(01:47:42):
equc and well Queen Casino pe all up tribe.
Speaker 3 (01:47:44):
We unfortunately they're kind of attached at the hip. Is
it disrespectful? I don't know.
Speaker 2 (01:47:48):
They're making them some good money off of it, so
hopefully it's not disrespectful hearing another casinos or sorry, another
tribes being brought up right now.
Speaker 3 (01:47:59):
We'll see what comes out of that. Maybe up north somewhere.
Speaker 7 (01:48:01):
Yeah, I got two more talkbacks Fireway. Hey Dan Wilson here.
You know, a tough game last night, tough break. You know,
you know, we fought hard though, you know, you know,
you know, and the analytics told me to say that.
You know, analytics told me to speak right now, you know,
you know, and analytics will continue to tell me to
speak you know, you know Rutger came in there, he
fought hard, you know, you know, you know, you know,
you know, you know you.
Speaker 3 (01:48:21):
Know, and he'll continue to fight hard. You know.
Speaker 2 (01:48:23):
The analytics is a big thing, and Rutgers era is
over two touchdowns in close games.
Speaker 3 (01:48:28):
Two touchdowns. Pretty good in the Seahawks, you know, you know.
So we'll go back out their day. Rutger will be
pitching tonight. Thanks, fight hard.
Speaker 5 (01:48:33):
You know you know.
Speaker 3 (01:48:35):
They did say tough one about eight times last night too.
Did he say it again?
Speaker 5 (01:48:39):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (01:48:39):
I can't listen to multiple times. The game is over
at West hard knock, so yell, welmar Yeah.
Speaker 5 (01:48:44):
I and Andrews James here, Hi, James. The Mariners have Miller, Kirby,
Gilbert Woo, and Handcott all right handed pictures our starters.
Remove one of them, put them in the bullpen. Bring
up Kate Andrewson, so of left hander, so that the
opposing team won't just be dead set against right handed pitching.
(01:49:07):
Something's kind of change, what can occur.
Speaker 4 (01:49:10):
That's an underrated aspect. I think you only have right
handed starters.
Speaker 3 (01:49:14):
Yeah, that's okay for those who know kay Leanderson is leftiest.
So yes, is well, and we know how this team's
done against left handed hitters or pitchers.
Speaker 4 (01:49:28):
Yeah for the most part, right, Yeah, exactly H four five.
I love this text. If Anders was fired, with the
show be better? Or do twenty six year olds know everything?
Speaker 5 (01:49:35):
Now?
Speaker 3 (01:49:37):
Well, Eve would have to run his on board, So
I don't know about that. Here's the thing, the show
would not be better. I'll stand by my guy.
Speaker 2 (01:49:45):
Also in twenty nine. But yeah, who I get the
I get the point. Yeah, listen, I understand what people
are like. There's got people mad at you on the
text line. Why they Matt you I don't care because
you said get rid of Dan Wilson. Yeah, sure, I
guess you guys are the minority right now. I I
think there's a lot of people that like, hey, that
would appease people if Dan Wilson got fired. Yes, you
(01:50:06):
don't make You don't fire somebody to a piece of
fan base. You fire somebody to get better. But it
just doesn't feel like that's going to happen, right. It
just doesn't feel that's that that's going to take.
Speaker 4 (01:50:17):
One to have written the story saying that this is
the reasons why Dan Wilson probably won't be fired this year,
Like what again, it would have happened already, right.
Speaker 2 (01:50:26):
Oh, I should have asked, is two pi three highlight
of hard knocks last night? The spin rate of Sam
spirals that love the super slow motion. I'm sure he
was watching with a sandwich in the heater watching that
Eric in Kitsap County. I didn't get into that because
so if you used to work for a football company
that manufactured footballs, and I'm telling you right now, nobody
that's in media anywhere can speak on that more than him.
Speaker 3 (01:50:48):
But he has talked about it a lot.
Speaker 2 (01:50:50):
This is something we've discussed, actually, and there's something to
it spin rate and everything else. The other thing is
like a wet ball, and which can increase the weight
by a if you're listening to my apologies, like an
ounce or two ounces.
Speaker 3 (01:51:03):
Affects that massively.
Speaker 2 (01:51:07):
So I found that interesting having had that conversation with
you before, like watching that and stuff and just how
the spin rate works and all that. I didn't realize
Sam had such a high spin rate compared to other guys.
Speaker 3 (01:51:17):
Even in the NFL. It is funny how that's being
in the NFL.
Speaker 4 (01:51:20):
Now, that was the whole thing in baseball for a while,
all the revolutions, and that's why Bryce Smeller's stuff plus
is so good because he gets all the.
Speaker 3 (01:51:28):
That's what happens the two three.
Speaker 2 (01:51:31):
How about a change of the guy who puts the
roster together one good season in twelve years. They fooled
us into thinking this roster was so talented.
Speaker 3 (01:51:38):
They were wrong.
Speaker 4 (01:51:39):
I don't think they fooled us. Everyone said that his
team was good.
Speaker 3 (01:51:42):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (01:51:43):
If I don't, I don't, I don't know. I don't
know if that's a situation where I mean, listen, look
at look at the players coming up, look at the roster,
look at the pitching. I think it's hard to Jerry
(01:52:03):
and justin Jerry specifically, have THEYM got over the top.
Speaker 4 (01:52:06):
Yeah, I don't think they did everything they could to
make this team that was eight outs away for the
World Series be a World Series contender.
Speaker 2 (01:52:12):
We also don't know how much their hands are tied, correct,
Like if they had truly an open checkbook, right, yeah,
if they If they had an open like if if
Jerry Depoto could do whatever he wanted and didn't care
about the finances, don't you think at some point maybe
he would have just signed those guys last year, hopefully right,
(01:52:34):
hopefully all right, David Moller joins us next.
Speaker 8 (01:52:50):
So you want Paul Sewall I wanted him. He's not
longer available. How long was he available for?
Speaker 3 (01:52:57):
Three days? Yeah? He's gone. Where you go to Toronto? Yep? Yes,
Mariners could have had him. Toronto's still in it baby.
Well yeah if if the Mayor's is still in a
Toronto still in it.
Speaker 2 (01:53:08):
Well their game and a half ahead of Salfs.
Speaker 3 (01:53:10):
They did very much right. Yes, so he was I
think he was dfaed Monday.
Speaker 8 (01:53:16):
Okay, uh, two and five six point two three ERA,
but up until late June three one eight e R
and thirty one games.
Speaker 4 (01:53:25):
You wouldn't be a closer anymore, none at all, no
extra arm.
Speaker 3 (01:53:28):
I just want him for his leaders yes.
Speaker 5 (01:53:30):
Uh.
Speaker 8 (01:53:31):
Since June twenty third, fourteen games for Paul last ten
and two thirds seven bombs?
Speaker 3 (01:53:38):
Hey, yay, fourteen point three four e RA. He just
fell apart. You can only have one Seawalder Rutger.
Speaker 8 (01:53:45):
PAULI Seawald obviously, hundred percent PAULI Seawald. Guys, this team
has no leadership whatsoever. Hey, cal talk, you wanted to talk?
Speaker 3 (01:53:52):
He did, and it should not be a novelty.
Speaker 8 (01:53:54):
I said that last night on social media, you know,
I mean, I was asking you guys off the air,
does anybody know what josh Neaedeler's voice sounds like.
Speaker 3 (01:54:02):
I have no idea. I think that the thing.
Speaker 2 (01:54:04):
My only criticism cal two, you do it on the
road and there's nobody there, like there's like like it's
just it's fine.
Speaker 8 (01:54:10):
I mean, it kind of feels like there's nobody there anyway, right,
Like I'm I'm I'm looking for any clubhouse report quotes.
Speaker 3 (01:54:19):
And again I'm not there. Right. We know the guys
that cover the team.
Speaker 8 (01:54:23):
I don't know what's going on down there, but man,
it just feels like it is just an absolute Morgue.
Speaker 3 (01:54:29):
Dance with me with this.
Speaker 2 (01:54:30):
Yes, if for them to get to the postseason, right right,
eighty two and eighty probably Okay, that's ten games over right.
Speaker 3 (01:54:36):
The rest of the way, we gotta worry.
Speaker 2 (01:54:38):
About twenty six And are they capable of going twenty
six and sixteen capable?
Speaker 3 (01:54:42):
Yeah, of course they are. Is it gonna happen?
Speaker 6 (01:54:45):
No?
Speaker 5 (01:54:45):
Is it?
Speaker 3 (01:54:48):
I mean, guys, look, here's the thing.
Speaker 2 (01:54:51):
Unless we have a seven and nine team, make it, Yeah,
eighty and eighty two team.
Speaker 8 (01:54:55):
Well, you could if the Astros lose today and they're
playing right now, every team in this division is at
five hundred or below. You could go to bed tomorrow
night and it could be nineteen ninety four all over again.
Look up the ninety four Americanly West standings. Anders, you're
too young to know what the hell we're talking about.
Speaker 1 (01:55:14):
But.
Speaker 8 (01:55:16):
Everybody was under five hundred. Giants, the winner of this
division could be under five hundred. Can you imagine with
Julio Rodriguez, Cal Rowley, Josh Naylor, Randia Rose Arena, George Kirby, Logan,
Gilbert Brian Wu, Bryce Miller, Lauis Castillo, Andres Munoz missing
the playoffs in a year where the winner of your
(01:55:37):
division finished under five hundred. Yeah, it's possible. It's very
It's absolutely possible. They could also be ten games under
by tomorrow night if they get swept by New York, and.
Speaker 2 (01:55:47):
The Astros may end up losing a series to the
team that's twenty eight.
Speaker 8 (01:55:52):
Giants are terrible, and they have a college baseball manager,
by the way, running their show.
Speaker 3 (01:55:56):
Rangers.
Speaker 2 (01:55:57):
Giant fans I think hate him more than people hate
Rangers to Angels later tonight. The Angels is the worst
team in baseball arguably, and the Rangers could fall below
five hundred if they lose that and then lose a
series of that.
Speaker 8 (01:56:06):
Well, here's the question I asked on social media, and
I asked.
Speaker 3 (01:56:09):
This to Dick this morning as well.
Speaker 8 (01:56:11):
If cal Rawley continues to struggle like this and he
comes out of the gate cold again next year, what
do you do with him?
Speaker 3 (01:56:19):
What do you do?
Speaker 5 (01:56:19):
God?
Speaker 3 (01:56:20):
They oh, eighty five million dollars for the next four years.
Speaker 2 (01:56:23):
We brought this up earlier. I think there's a concern.
He's thirty in November, correct, Like.
Speaker 3 (01:56:29):
Right, he's old? Is it are? And he's a one
trick pony? Are we on the downslide? Well, it feels
like if this is.
Speaker 4 (01:56:36):
God, if this is the beginning of a falloff and
not just a one off season, right, worst screen right on?
Speaker 8 (01:56:41):
If you have to ask that question, right, they'd have
to eat it. They'd have to eat it and go
find somebody else. Well, because they can't keep trotting him
out there. I mean, look, he's cal Rawley. He had
sixty home runs. He's probably the greatest catcher in Mariner history,
no disrespect to Dan, he deserves every benefit of the doubt.
Speaker 3 (01:57:00):
I think we all get that. He gets the year
no matter what.
Speaker 8 (01:57:02):
This isn't the Johnny Parada Show, or who'd they get
from the Blue Jays today, mc iver, McIver, Willie mcgiver
from Toronto. All right, he's building a catching mit right now,
that's right, cardboard. He gets the year, right, But and
he gets next year. He's your starting catcher next season.
But if we're April thirtieth, April twenty first, whatever, and
he can't hit water falling out.
Speaker 3 (01:57:23):
Of a canoe, what do you do?
Speaker 5 (01:57:25):
My god?
Speaker 3 (01:57:26):
I mean, do they have to be kind of prepared
maybe for that? You just you've got to hope this
is and they get Harry Ford back, God, like you
want him. I mean, you got Luke Stevenson. There you go.
Speaker 2 (01:57:37):
I mean, that's there you go. That's the worst case scenario.
I mean, but when's the next draft next June?
Speaker 1 (01:57:43):
Is that?
Speaker 3 (01:57:43):
Right? Yeah? Draft to catcher first round? But well, did
Luke Stevenson right?
Speaker 5 (01:57:47):
Well?
Speaker 3 (01:57:47):
Last year?
Speaker 4 (01:57:48):
That and we got a really good catching prospect in
the Castio trade. Okay, Boston Smith. Great, Well, here's the
thing is, like what you bring up with next.
Speaker 2 (01:57:55):
Year, Boston, my name is Balston, Boston. What you brought
up about out next year? Does it matter what cal
does the rest this year? Is it more important to
see what he does next.
Speaker 3 (01:58:05):
Year as far as what our long term concerns about him, Like.
Speaker 4 (01:58:09):
Maybe he kind of gets maybe he gets a little
bit warm in September. Yeah, you need lots of warning
track flyouts. They're in for nests where they hits it hard.
Speaker 8 (01:58:17):
You're asking if one seven, You're asking if if he
ends the year on a hot note, but he comes
out that year. I don't I don't think that really matters.
I mean, this guy needs to get away. He needs
an offseason. He needs to first of all, find a
girlfriend apparently right, go on vacation, go back to Carolina,
you know, do something, just get the hell out of here.
(01:58:39):
He needs a complete matrix reset, absolute reset. Man Naylor
suck next season, Well, I mean a lot of them,
like a bunch of money.
Speaker 3 (01:58:48):
Then you're more concerned about Nail.
Speaker 8 (01:58:50):
No, I'm more concerned about cal Rawley because I think
Josh Naylor is a more complete hitter than Cal is.
He's not he can be a single hitter, but cal
Rawley is again I hate to you the same term
over and over again. He's a one trick pony, that's
what he is. I mean, he was a one trick
pony last year, you know. But he performed a trick
like crazy, pulling rabbits out of his un every single night.
(01:59:12):
It's unbelievable. Let's see Florio's on today, petro Son today,
Larry Stone on today, Lakers getting sold again. We chat
about that with him. Lots of w n B. A drama,
it's a daily occurrence man, in that league. It's done
by every single night. It's unreal. Stephanie White, you can
go to.
Speaker 3 (01:59:31):
How she should have as much as maybe people think
Wilson should be fine. Oh my god, do Fever fans
despise her by the way, did they really?
Speaker 5 (01:59:40):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (01:59:40):
That's right. I saw Caitlin respond to that, try to
stand up for she did that. He did.
Speaker 8 (01:59:46):
She did more for Stephanie White than Stephanie White did
for Sophie Cunning.
Speaker 3 (01:59:50):
Or any of her players. Honestly, for Kate and Clark
all you're either.
Speaker 8 (01:59:53):
It's just it just kind of at least, you know,
it's it's laughable when somebody goes out and does something
that is so clearly obvious to everybody, and then tries
to claim it didn't happen, did all right?
Speaker 2 (02:00:05):
Yeah, all right, it's an unserious league. That's a Nathan
Bishop h term unserious. I love that show anyway, the
show wait till Monday.
Speaker 3 (02:00:12):
Should you should do more of it? I think you
should have one more often every day.
Speaker 8 (02:00:15):
Well, it's the best thing you guys do well, I
mean everything else, everything else, Stakes is the best thing.
Speaker 3 (02:00:21):
I gotta go. That was nice. See if the mild
mannered and marginally objectionably infness this is paddle day saying
so long everyone,
