Speaker 1 (00:00):
No from the Star Rentals Sports to us Jordan ninety
three point three KJRFMS Sports Headlines.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
The headlines are brought to you by Frostbreit Corps Light Choose Chill.
M's when their series against the Twins losing on Friday
just absolutely disgusting, fashion Andrews disgusting. Yeah, but you told
us going in the weekend. What'd you tell me? What
did I tell you? What did I tell you on
Friday night? What did I say on Friday night? I
said they would win two out of three? Boy, it
looks like that wasn't gonna be the case. For a
(00:27):
little bit. It did, But I'll take the w m's
uh trade for Taylor Ward today? Talk about that in
a second. Begin a series with Tigers tomorrow because it
is Major League Baseball trade deadline day. Red Sox, Who's
traded for Adlie Ritchman, the former Oregon State Beaver, the
catcher from Baltimore. They're in a fire sale in Baltimore
right now. Yes, Dodgers trade for Scooble over the weekend.
(00:49):
All people are upsets, people were masks, they are angry.
Lots of other trades we'll get to all those coming
up in just a couple of seconds. NCAA, the national
nightmare is over. Notre Dame in USC will again renew
their rivalry, beginning in twenty thirty, thank god. And football.
Yeah in twenty thirty. Yeah right, checking the calendar, it's
four years away. Okay, we'll see if that actually happened.
(01:11):
The Sounders lose to Portland six straight loss. Gave up
a Lake oal in that game. I watched that match.
That was They're not good, right, they're not good. It
also doesn't help that I look out there and I
like to recognize two players. Yeah, I think that's their
injury situation is diabolical. I'm not I'm not a Tacoma
Defiance fan. So when I watch that game, I'm like, well,
I guess i'm watching coma exact cool storm face New
(01:33):
York Liberty Night. They've lost seventeen eighteen. No, I think
they lost twenty eight thousand in a row. Yeah, that's
where they're at right now. Yeah, so they'll get beat
by I don't know, maybe Brianna Stewart. She even gonna
play that game. She might doesn't care, Like whatever, win anyway,
How about this? You give this the headline? How excited.
Are you US men's national team poach is back? Yeah,
poach is back. It's a I think it was the
(01:55):
right move.
Speaker 3 (01:56):
There weren't going to be many opportunities to really upgrade
from that spot, and I still think even though how
it ended overall was a successful World Cup.
Speaker 2 (02:03):
Is he he had to have other options though didn't clubwise?
Speaker 3 (02:06):
I think so, definitely over in Europe, but he has
a pretty good gig here where he doesn't have to
you know, it's a little bit less of an intensive situation,
so less grind.
Speaker 2 (02:16):
All right, that's good. That's good for US mentions team. Yeah,
I would have been nice to get past round of sixteen,
but sure, I think they'd be watching the games, can
see that the foundation Let's go there be there better
with him than not with THEMMAR. Let's go. Let's got
still started.
Speaker 1 (02:27):
Live from the Virginia Mason Athletics Center. This is kjr's
special coverage of Seahawks training camp, brought to you by
the twenty twenty sixth Boweing Classic COUGUS fourteen through the
sixteen at the club at snot call me Ridge. Details
at Boeing Classic dot Com. Now Here's Ian Fernets on
your home for the Super Bowl Champion twelve Man Sports
(02:49):
Radio ninety three point three KJR FM.
Speaker 2 (02:53):
All right, here we are Virginia Mason Athletics Center, Seahawks
getting ready to hit the field after day off yesterday.
They practice Saturday, took yesterday off. They're going the next spot.
I'm actually going the next six days. They got five
practices here and then they've got the I don't know
what they call it, FanFest scrimmage whatever it is on
Saturday at Looman and then a day off Sunday, and
then kind of a game week in a sense. It's
(03:14):
the first preseason game is a week from Saturday, upcoming
against the Dallas Cowboys. Tory Horton's gonna join us in
just a couple of seconds, the Hawk wide receiver. He
heard him on the podium with Greg. I think if
you listened to Greg earlier, I will sit down and
kind of delve into it to where he is health wise,
the struggles of last year's rookie season, and really what
could be a really kind of upgraded receiver room with
(03:36):
the Rashiets. She heat here throughout the offseason training camp,
learning the offense, getting acclimated with Sam Darnold and then
a healthy Tory Horton, who I don't know when he
was playing, was pretty damn good. His first ever catch,
by the way, do you remember what it was, Andrews?
It was a touchdown, was it not? It was at Pittsburgh. Yeah,
that's right. Yeah, who needs dk metcalf Right started three
(03:59):
of eight games before he got hurt and was out
for the year, but was plenty productive in those games.
Eight games, five touchdowns for Seattle in terms of receiving.
So yeah, man, he did well. Also, by the way,
return a punt for a touchdown too, That's right, that's right. Yes,
So he had six touchdowns in eight games. That's good productivity.
(04:22):
I do believe efficiency Ian we call it efficiency. And
he played with literally a fractured leg all year. Wow,
until he finally shut it down. Wow. That's remarkable, really
what he did. So we'll talk to Tori, to Tory
Horton here. Coming up in a second. Taylor Ward has
been picked up by the Mariners. We'll get to that
in just a couple of moments as well. We will
molly Wop today at one o'clock, will be joined by
(04:44):
Chris and Nathan angry as they may or may not be.
We'll see what happens over the next fifty six minutes
or so, but those guys will join us at one.
We'll keep Chris kind of on the line, kind of
on retainer in the two o'clock hour in case anything
else happens. Maybe spend some time as well talking about
the rest of the American League and what has happened.
And you know, we're seeing the things happen throughout the
(05:06):
day today. Are they going to complain about trek school today? Ian?
I don't. I'm not. I that's a let you know what,
what the hell? Le'll just start there for a second
for Tory Hort you brought it up. We'll start, all right.
I I don't know what there is to complain about,
you know, like like he there's a lot of back
and forth. There's a lot of people saying, well, the
(05:28):
Dodgers were you know, were gifted, you know, being the Dodgers,
and and you know we're born on third base. I've
seen that line use like a hundred times already, right,
And and they they have the ability and maybe they'll
want to to spend more money than anybody else. Uh,
they they've traded for a guy that's the two times
Cy Young Award winner in the American League, knowing full
(05:50):
well they're going to resign him. Not every team would
have been able to do that, exactly.
Speaker 3 (05:55):
That's the thing is. I think that's the big thing. Obviously,
anyone could have matched the trade package that right Dodgers
gave out for him, but not a lot of teams
would be willing to do that knowing that they're not
going to get him back because they know he's going
to go to the Dodgers in the office.
Speaker 2 (06:06):
That's see, that's the whole thing is now. Listen, we
could complain from here until forever about the fact that,
you know, it's LA and maybe it's desirable for a
player to go, but it's also desirable for a couple
of reasons. One, it's if people want to play for
the Dodgers, historic team, Dodgers Stadium. You know, it's it's
(06:26):
especially with the Lebron gun, it's got to be the
biggest thing going to LA right now. Right, Oh yeah, absolutely, yes, Yeah,
I mean I think even when Lebron was there, they
were the Dodgers. Dodgers. Yeah, I've been there, I've been
there enough times, you know, over the years covering Seahawk
games especially, and you know, whether it be preseason, regular season,
even when we're covering the Chargers games there like we
(06:47):
would go out and Dodgers games are a huge deal,
like on TV everywhere, you don't have to ask the
bartender to turn it on. It's like they're They're the
main game in town. Yep. And I think there's a
desire for a lot of players probably to be in
a situation like that, Oh, they win, I should mention
that they win. That helps and they'll spend money. Now
(07:07):
the question about their ability to spend money. And we'll
talk to Chris. We'll get into this maybe with Chris
on the two o'clock wait and see. But I just
I'm not mad at the Dodgers. The system itself, is
it broken? Probably I don't buy And I'm not going
to subscribe to the theory that well, this is it,
this is the this is the straw that broke the
(07:28):
camel's back. This will be the tipping point for sure,
we're going to have a lockout. Now, Derek Scuble going
to the Dodgers is not the reason there's going to
be a lockout, and it's not the tipping point. I
don't think there's going to be a lockout either. Probably
makes it a little bit more likely. Well, I think
we'll other owners. It's gonna get the salary cap was
going to be discussed whether Scuball went there or not. True.
(07:50):
And you know, I think that's that's part of the
issue here, right, is that people are you know, they
keep going back to the to the to the to
the salary cap. I just Andrews, I can't get upset
about it. And here's you know what, here's the other
reason I can't get upset about it. They're in the
National League. Yeah, I really, I really don't care. If
(08:11):
you're worrying about it, that means you're in the World Series, right.
I told that. I said that to Greg and cross Talk.
He brought it up, and I said, you know what,
here's the biggest If we here in Seattle find out
that Trek Scubale is an issue and a problem for
the Mariners from our local team, well, the only way
that happens is if you're seeing them in October in
the World Series. Yea, and then that would be the
(08:32):
first time in fifty years of the franchise. You're in
the World Series, and if School will beat you twice
in the World Series, okay, whatever, I'll take my chances there.
And hey, we got to the World Series. We're good, right, Like,
I don't know, there's there's a lot of things that
make no sense to me over the last few days.
Andrews that that one is at the top of the list.
The other one that you know, and I don't know
(08:54):
where you fall on this, And I'll see what the
boys say as well. The Castillo trade, I'm not going
to I'm not going to applaud anybody for a salary dump.
I'm just not And that's what it was. It's one
hundred percent of salary dump they want to get out
from the next couple of years of his salary. I
get that. I'm just gonna look back, not Castillo this year.
I'm gonna look back at the Rock that we had
since he got traded here on trade deadline day a
(09:16):
few years ago. That was a dude that was an
absolute monster, especially in big games. And oh, by the way,
in the postseason, yes, like like just carried your ass
in those regards, and that's it to me. I think
that's a dude, I know he's down this year. Yeah,
the six man rotations, goofy, I get all those things.
He's just a dude, man and I and you could
(09:38):
tell he was upset. You could tell the players were upset. Yes,
you know, because players aren't dumb. They know they're looking
around going, well, what, yeah, we have a six man rotation.
You're also one Bryce Miller floating particle in his elbow
away from being to a four man rotation, right and
(09:59):
for a team that I think he is trying to contend.
So you've got that going on.
Speaker 4 (10:04):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (10:04):
I just I don't know. I just can't applaud him.
I can't applaud him for that. Hold that thought though.
I think we got Tory Horton come over in a second.
Sounds good, yeah, so I I but that's honestly, Anders.
At the end of the day, Taylor Ward makes him better. Yeah,
Castile was a salary dump. None of those guys make
them better necessarily, you know, A so so, but that's
(10:27):
I mean, that's all caps maybe as well. So we'll see,
I mean we'll see. Uh but yeah, like, uh, we're
gonna check in and just secret Tory Horton is here.
How are you Tory, Good to see you. I'll have
you throw that headset on. We're live on kJ R here,
go ahead and do that. Tell you Seahawk fans watching
him walk out here, no limp, watching him in practice,
it's a good thing. He's all good out there. Yeah,
(10:48):
can you hear me? Okay?
Speaker 4 (10:49):
Yeah, great, all right, all right.
Speaker 2 (10:51):
Tory Horton joining a Seahawk wide receiver. We're just going
over the numbers from your rookie season. I don't know,
six touchdowns in eight games. That's okay on a broken lake.
Speaker 5 (11:01):
Yeah, yeah, that's pretty nice.
Speaker 4 (11:04):
Pretty nice.
Speaker 2 (11:05):
Hey, let's let's go back. I know you told the
story the other day at the podium, but for for
our listeners who haven't heard the podium audio and all
the Seahawks fans out there, it was a strange thing.
Last year. You came in your first ever catch in
the NFL as a touchdown in Pittsburgh. You get going things,
we're this this guy, you can return punch. Everyone's excited,
and then boom you're out leg injury, and Mike McDonald
(11:25):
kind of kept it hush hush. What exactly was going on?
Speaker 5 (11:28):
Uh yeah, kind of kind of started off as like
a shinny splint that kind of just got worse over time,
and that was something that was kind of new to me.
I never really had shint splints, and uh, you know,
it got to the you know, it got to a
feeling where it felt worse than like actual SINNI splints
by like you know, week three of course, and then
(11:50):
you know, uh, through that, like that week three to
week nine, I kind of just been you know, trying
to rust it out and you know, go.
Speaker 4 (11:57):
Out there and perform.
Speaker 5 (11:58):
And uh, after the Commander's Game, I kind of took
the time to get it checked out myself because getting
out of bed that morning, it was it was real.
Speaker 4 (12:08):
Hard to kind of to walk on it.
Speaker 5 (12:10):
So I actually got to check down and found out
that it was cracked, and that was just that kind
of just you know, set it down.
Speaker 2 (12:18):
So let me be two things. One your last game,
the Commander's Game. Four catches for forty eight yards and
two touchdowns on what effectively was a broken leg.
Speaker 4 (12:28):
Yeah, a little bit. Yeah, it was. It was cracked.
Speaker 2 (12:30):
Are you kidding me? It was? That's that's nuts. Yeah,
that's nuts, man. I had a little toward all hill
I get a little these games. So were you hiding
it a little bit from like in terms of the
pain the severity of it, because for them to have
like you're out there and then boom, you're shut down
(12:51):
two weeks on the inactive list and then on iron
and away you go. I'm guessing that you're kind of
hiding it from coaches and trainers and just trying to
fight through it.
Speaker 5 (12:58):
Yeah, just a little bit of course, like some players
in them seeing like the limp and uh it was
a little like I run to play it then after
the play, I kind of limp off to the soil
on our field, and you know, players and some coaches
will kind of see that and I'll just say, you know,
it's just like a little a little bit of a
shim splint I got going on and just kind of
(13:21):
keep going on the next play mentality, and uh yeah,
I kind of kind of felt like I was just
toughening it out and it kind of just got to
the point where I couldn't take it anymore.
Speaker 4 (13:32):
It was like it got too bad.
Speaker 2 (13:34):
Was part of that just because you could you felt
something special was going on here and you wanted to
be a part of it.
Speaker 5 (13:39):
Yeah, you know, it's just a It was a great
you know, just a great group of guys and you know,
me coming in as a rook all I wanted to
do was to you know, play play my role and
do do the like, do the best I can for
the team, and you know, just show them, you know,
you know.
Speaker 4 (13:57):
What I could do to help provide for the team.
Speaker 5 (13:59):
And I just wanted to beat here for the team
and just make sure I was in you know, just
just to give them that sigh of you know, such
what a good you know, mindset player, teammate character. I
have to help, uh you know, to help with the
success of the of the organization and things like that.
So you know, once I got to that point where
(14:21):
I felt like I couldn't go no more, I actually
went and got it checked out, because the last thing
I want to do is put you know, anyone or
even myself at a disadvantage and you know, possibly hurting
the team rather than helping the team.
Speaker 2 (14:32):
So so you did. I mean there's a selfless nature
to that as well, and you know when you're talking
about doing whatever it helps. We had Dan Anthony Bell
on last week and he was I was amazed by
his attitude. He gets cut. He's still texting guys. He's
not part of the actual Super Bowl game. He still
gets a ring. You get a ring, And I mean,
you guys both contribute. Last year he started two games,
and it's just there's just thing that permeates through this
(14:54):
organization in the day and age in which a lot
of athletes are look at me, and I likeveryone's gonna
look you guys tomorrow on hard knocks, right, and you're
gonna be front and center. But this is a very
kind of, I would say, almost subdued team in some ways.
And it is about the team and the soulful stuff.
Does that come from the coach?
Speaker 5 (15:11):
Yeah, you know it starts it starts off from Mike,
and you know he does a great job of you
know how he starts off the meetings and you know
he lays that foundation of what he wants this team
to be.
Speaker 4 (15:22):
And I feel like.
Speaker 5 (15:23):
It's uh uh, the players itself and coaches. You know,
we kind of take accountability on each other and you know,
we want to be different from every other team. And
you could just tell by like just how we are
on the field, around the locker room, even outside of here.
It's just guys that's always connecting and you know, just
being there for each other. You know, we're we're joking around,
We're we're chopping up with different position groups. Like it's
(15:45):
not just receivers with receivers all the time. We'll go
and mess with the D line or we'll go and
mess with the linebackers and things like that. That's you know,
that separates us from everyone else. And you know, just
the just the little things that we do to you know,
just to take our mind off football and getting to
know each other outside of the game of football. And
I feel like that's just that the foundation that might
(16:06):
want us to build as a you know, as a
team of being that connected together. Because once we go
out there for a season, we go to war, we know,
you know what we got on the line and who
we got next to us, and you know what we
plan for.
Speaker 4 (16:18):
So I feel like we've been doing a great job.
Speaker 2 (16:20):
Tory Horton with me Ian pronounced with you this afternoon
at Sea Hawk head quarters. Toy is it now? Do
you have a rod? Two rods in the same lake.
Speaker 4 (16:29):
I got one ride?
Speaker 2 (16:30):
Yeah, okay, I got one ride.
Speaker 5 (16:31):
Goes from like from the knee to the ankle. And
then I got like one nail that's kind of holding
it there.
Speaker 2 (16:38):
Can you get through a metal detector?
Speaker 5 (16:39):
Okay, I gotta let them know that I really Yeah,
every time I fly, I gotta tell them I have
a metal.
Speaker 2 (16:46):
So, in all seriousness, like we're watching you out there,
I think we're the highlights for for a lot of people.
On day one and training camp, fifteen walks out on
the field, helmet in hand, no pup, You're ready to go.
How healthy are you compared to not just last year obviously,
but even going back to college when you were banged
up a little bit. How healthy are you compared to
those years?
Speaker 5 (17:05):
I feel great, you know, just the hard work that
I've been doing with the trainers and things like that
since I had the surgery. Of course, missing OTAs and
things like that. Just be coming in every day with
the same mindset of getting better each day and you know,
finally working out, being able to you know, finally lace
up and have a helmet and hand to go out
(17:27):
there with the team.
Speaker 4 (17:28):
It feels great to be out there. So I just
feel like it was just a lot of.
Speaker 5 (17:31):
Hard work and you know, unseen work that was kind
of you know, just kind of underground. But that's that's
when you know, those diamonds and roughs, you know, kind
of start to shine. So I just feel like, you know,
it's a huge shout out to the trainers and things
like that, who's kind of you know, been with me
throughout that whole process and getting me to know where
I'm at right.
Speaker 2 (17:52):
Now, Tori, We're gonna go behind the scenes with hard knocks,
go behind the scenes. When did they give you the
thumbs up, the full clearance you're we're not putting you
on pup. You're gonna be out there that first Saturday
practice And and how did that? How did that conversation
go and what went through your mind?
Speaker 3 (18:08):
Uh?
Speaker 5 (18:08):
Yeah, it's kind of uh, you know how like some
of the young guys kind of returned a little earlier
than the vets, so it's part of like the injured
and then then the rookies who returned back earlier with
the QBS, and you know, the ultimate test was doing
some of those practices which were uh of course more
slowed down, but still had some high intensity plays. And
(18:30):
that was pretty much the ultimate test of like, you know,
is he's gonna go out there and you know, perform
and run routes and feel good, you know of doing
that and going out there and you know, feeling great.
Of course, still got the little rep count, but uh,
that just small steps of improvements. And you know, once
they told me that after the last r R i
(18:50):
V practice before the Vets came back, that you know, hey,
you're good to go, like we're gonna give you the
green light to start training camp.
Speaker 4 (18:58):
You know, it was just a.
Speaker 5 (18:59):
Bunch of a bunch of excitement. I actually didn't even
tell my family I got the thumbs up because I
just wanted to wanted it to be a surprise to
them because they just know how hard I've been working
in the off season. Just kind of been dialed in
the whole time. Didn't really take any trips to you know,
enjoyed all seasons. My main focus was to you know,
make sure my health was good and make sure the
(19:19):
leg was good to go. So you know, the hard
work paid off. And you know, I wouldn't go back
and say like, dang, I wish I'll you know, it
took a trip because you know, I'm way more excited
than I'm.
Speaker 4 (19:29):
Actually back on the field.
Speaker 2 (19:30):
That's really good. David Trick when's thehead trainer out here,
give me a shout out. I mean David and McKenzie
and the rest of it. That's a great medical staff.
Oh yeah, yeah, they don't. They don't get enough credit
for what they do with you guys. Before I let
you go, so you're healthy, and again we'll go back
return touchdown and five receiving in in the eight games
you play. That's six touchdowns in eight games. Rashid Shihed
(19:50):
comes in with you injured. They re signed him. We
know Cooper couples different this year. I might be wrong there,
and then I think you have the offensive player of
the year if I'm not mistake number eleven JSN. When
you go into that receiver room you're looking around. What
goes through your mind?
Speaker 5 (20:06):
Man, Just a bunch of competitors. You know, we all
have different traits and we all like to feed off
each other. And then you know, just the just the depth.
You know, we have a whole you know, great group
of guys in that room. And you know you can
even see in training camp we're all feeding off each other.
We're all excited for each other, and you know, I'm
excited about this year. You know, it's just Uh, it's
(20:27):
a lot of It's a lot of things out there
that you know, we could mess around with and do
and you know, just having that many weapons and pieces
to throw them into an offense is crazy. So uh,
you know, like I said, I got a lot of
faith in and Brian and what he got cooking up.
And you know, I'm excited about the year. So, you know,
finally getting all together and going out there with this
(20:49):
group of guys, it's gonna be exciting.
Speaker 2 (20:51):
Who returns kicks you or Rashid shi heat I take
a problem to have.
Speaker 4 (20:54):
Yeah, that's a great problem. But we don't know whoever
it is.
Speaker 5 (20:58):
We know we know that we're gonna get the job done,
so we're excited.
Speaker 2 (21:02):
I got one more for you. What Cooper Cup? Yes,
what is he like as a teammate in your position
group for a young guys second year? Is is he
hear the cliche coach on the field maybe into the
film room? What is it like happening that a future
Hall of Famer sitting there that that's on your team
on your side?
Speaker 5 (21:20):
Man, yes, man, Captain Coop for real, man, this dude
is he's.
Speaker 4 (21:25):
Everything you can ask for as a vet.
Speaker 5 (21:26):
You know, you can even see from uh, you know,
es endgame last year on how you know, on how
much he's improved, and you know, having that that's the
other year he had. You know, I feel like that's
a huge part with Coop coming in and just guiding
us and helping us through his vision of things. And
you know, Coop is such a smart guy. You know,
(21:48):
he he knows football from you know, the front to
the back of his hand. And you know you can
go out there and ask him anything he's going to
give you. You know, what he.
Speaker 4 (21:56):
Thinks about things.
Speaker 5 (21:57):
And you know, you you see a lot of guys
pulling cool asking you know, how how do you feel
about this route or how you feel about this run
scheme and how you approach you know, certain techniques and.
Speaker 4 (22:07):
Things like that.
Speaker 5 (22:07):
And you know, he's just a just just a great
player and just a great human being to be honest,
just to be around. I still remember to this day
getting drafted. He was the first dude.
Speaker 4 (22:20):
Who texted me and said, welcome to the team. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (22:22):
And you know me growing up watching him, uh, just
just watching him play and at the highest stage Triple
Crown all that, it just shows how humble he is.
You know, always wanting to get better and want to
put his best foot forward for the team and just
just an all around team guy. And you know he's
still out there making plays and things like that. And man,
(22:42):
we always joke around with him and we we mess
around call him unk, but we we know he not
really he not really young. You know, he he looks great,
and uh, you know we just got none but the
utmost respect for him because of what he's you know,
laid down and uh in that room. You know, it's
like he laid his own foundation in the receiver room
(23:03):
of how we attacked every day and how we attack
the film board and things like that, and just being
smarter than just going out there on abilities. You know,
sometimes you don't need to just use peer athleticism if
you're just that smart on the field to you know,
take take less stress off your body and just do
it the smart way of getting open or you know,
executing blocks and that just you know, something that you
(23:24):
kind of take in as a young guy from a
vet like him, and you know it's like them like
those little things do work out, and uh, that's just
you know, piece by piece that he teaches. You know,
everybody in the receiver room, even Jackson, I feel like,
uh yeah, it's a it's it's for sure a golden
gym that we got in the room. That's that's kind
of like unseen or you know, not as noticed, but
(23:45):
it is a huge part of our success of him
being there.
Speaker 2 (23:49):
You remind him that you watch him growing up.
Speaker 5 (23:50):
Oh yeah, I watch Man cool. I don't know how
nobody wats Coop Man. Heys great, he's he's special. Yeah,
he's special.
Speaker 2 (24:05):
It's a it's a heck of a room you guys
are gonna put together. I think it's very under the radar,
under the flying of the radar, what that receiver room
is going to be like this year, healthy Tory Horton,
jsn Rashichi heat in the offense and all the off season,
all the training camp. Quarterback's not bad either. Yeah, you
guys are going to be just fine. Hey, listen, a
million dollar smile. He's healthy. Fifteen's back out there, fans,
(24:27):
and he's raring to go. And we saw what he
could do with a broken leg last year, effectively a
fractured leg. We saw what that was. So I won't
put anything on you, but man, a healthy Tory heart
and I can't wait to see what you got going on.
Have a great year. Thank you so much for joining us.
Speaker 4 (24:40):
Appreciate you. Thank you guys.
Speaker 2 (24:41):
That's Tory Horton joining us. And we'll take a quick break,
come back with more. Nine three point three KTERFM.
Speaker 1 (24:50):
Now back to ian forness at the Virginia Mason Athletics
Center and our special coverage of Seahawks training camp, brought
to you by the Boweling Classic on Sports Radio three
three kJ.
Speaker 2 (25:01):
R f M. All right back in Virginia based Athletic
Center infront's with you Anderson Hurst back in the studios
of ninety three point three k FM on Elliott Avenue.
Do me a favor real quick. Just uh, we're gonna
get back to Seahawks. We'll do a lot of baseball
starting at one o'clock. But there isn't a reliever that
maybe the Mariners might have been targeting. But he's not available.
Now where do you go?
Speaker 3 (25:21):
Yeah, Luke Weaver with someone who I was looking at
and unfortunately he's looks looking like he's going to the
Pirates instead. He was from the Mets. Has two years
left on his deal or a year and a half.
I guess you could say, so Mariners are not getting
that reliever that I wish they were.
Speaker 2 (25:38):
Okay, well, we got Molly Wop coming up at one.
Chris will be with us until two forty five today
or maybe even three. Will keep him through soft crosslock a,
something happens, just we'll have him around. One of the
things I'm gonna talk to him about, we'll give you
the Dodger stuff is their farm system also must be
decent enough where they can get guys moved. And yeah, absolutely,
I mean that's part of can't can't be mad because
(25:59):
people in their job. Well, all right, just real quick,
the Tory Horton popped on a moment ago here at
Seahawks training camp. First of all, I hope you enjoyed
the interview, Andrews. I hope you enjoyed the interview. I
thought he was really good and just really well spoken
and really just great answers. Stuff about Cooper Cup was awesome.
(26:19):
There's a like. I mentioned this to Andrews in the
break we've been and I'm I'll be honest, I'll take
you behind the I'm pretty judicious who I asked for
out here. I mean, there are some bigger names we
could go for and ask our starters what I want
dudes that have a story to tell. I want guys
that that I know can talk a little bit. I
heard him on the podium last week and I'm like,
(26:40):
we haven't had Tory Horton on since drafted. I don't think, right,
since since last year when he got drafted in spring
of twenty twenty five. And you know the story of
playing with the broken leg basically like small thing. I've
had him, a lot of people had them. They're no
fun to get him to the level. Then he's got
a stress fracture. Yep. Now he's got a rod in
(27:00):
his leg. That's crazy. And this guy looks phenomenal out
there right now and the work he put in. But
what jumped out at meanders is I'm asking him about
like he powered through that through eight games, you know,
like he powered through it through eight games and then
finally he said, I got to shut it down. I'm done.
(27:21):
I got to shut it down. And man, you look
through there. He won a couple of games with nothing Burgers,
the Jaguar game, the Texans game. He didn't put up
any he didn't get a catch in those games. I'm
not sure if he had a return off to check
and see. But he was active. He played in those games,
and actually actually the Texans game he did not. I
(27:41):
think he was. I think he was inactive for that game.
I don't know Jaguars game. Sorry, the Jaguars game, he
was an active, got it. But the Commanders then he
comes off for the Commander's game and the last game
he plays four catches for forty eight yards the twenty
five yard touchdown. If you remember, the guy was the
guy was a machine and put up all all kinds
of numbers playing on really one leg. Imagine what this
(28:03):
guy'll do. But he also was kind of hiding the injury,
trying to look rout. He wanted to come back. You
could tell he wanted to come back, and I thought
what he said there was really key. He goes, yeah,
I just I'm hurting the team. I gotta get fixed.
I'm not helping. And that's a selfless thing to do, because,
as he said, there's a there was a feeling at
that time that this team had something going, had something
special going, and yet he shut her down on his
(28:26):
own and finally went to the guys and said, you
got to look at this more and they did, and
they found the stress fracture. They kind of kept it
under wraps and then he was done for the rest
of the season. They put him on injured reserve two
weeks later and we didn't see him again. Just listening
to him speak all the guys we've talked to so far,
I think it does bleed down. I asked him about
Mike McDonald. It bleeds down from Mike McDonald. It's just
(28:47):
the selfless way that this team goes about its business.
And every team has its own personality, every team has
its own way of doing things. But and it'll be
interesting to see. By the way, we'll give away the
we had a corn hoole set from HBO for Hard Knocks.
We'll give that away tomorrow on the air on the show.
The first episode of Hard Knocks is tomorrow tomorrow night
(29:08):
on HBO. It'll be interesting to see what these guys
how they're portrayed in that show, because they come across
to me is I'm gonna use a term here, but
it's an endearing term. Kind of boring, Yeah, honestly in
a good way, in a very good way. They're just
so business like and it comes and he said it.
It comes from the coach, you know, Like JSN is
(29:31):
the most unassuming superstar in the league, right, Like he
just is like he which I love. Like there's a
lot of we all know the receiver position, it's the
most diva position in all of sports. Right. He ain't
that guy right in any way, he just is. He
is not to win, that's it wants to win, you know.
And there's teams. We always look back at the super
(29:52):
Bowl team at twenty thirteen and the big personalities and
the egos and everybody wants their money and all that.
And these guys will get paid. They know they're gonna
get paid. But but you know, you can live with that
with as talented as they were, handful of Hall of
Famers on that roster. You know what. Richard Sherman can
walk around like that, Earl Thomas Cam those guys can
(30:13):
walk around like that. Yeah. The guys that can't were
the guys we've had here up until the last couple
of years. Jamal Adams can't act like that. I just can't. True, Like, dude,
you aren't that guy. You just are not that guy.
And that kind of translated into some other guys in
the locker room and bit you know Smith, you know
Smith turned into that guy. Russ was that guy a
(30:34):
little bit the end too. Yes, you know, like like
here's the thing with Russ. For all those that get
upset when we criticized Russ, and by no means, listen, Russ.
Russ got this team to the super Bowl. Yes, this
team doesn't maybe win a super Bowl without Russ quarterback
in franchise history period. And he was and he was great.
Twenty twelve final six games, unbelievable, twenty thirteen, he won
(30:57):
some games for these guys. He just did, you know,
got him back to the super Bowl the next year
with some miraculous plays, especially in the Green Bay game,
trusting his receivers even though Curse had had four balls
to go through his hands for picks. Everything else, Russ
was great. But somewhere along the way, Russ lost his way.
And you know what the best example of that is
if Russ was was a little more selfless, had checked
(31:18):
the ego at the door, had just tried to be,
you know, been the team guy that you would hope
guys would be. Russ would have a job right now
in the NFL, not on TV. Yes, he would like
he would still he would be a backup somewhere and
making good money. Now look probably a good decision. I
think he's gonna be great at TV, I really do.
I think if he's if he's coachable in TV, if
he listens to the like the producers and the guys
(31:41):
a no television and and and is actually genuine, he
could be great in television. He could be phenomenal. So
I hope he is. But the point is this the
selfless world that he was once in kind of went
away in all those guys. I think part of it
here at the quarterback is that way you know he's
he's been through. He talked about it last week. Week
he was on was Softy and Hugh and Darnold was
(32:04):
talking about all that you know, because I've had because
I've had some real lows in this league, Like he
admitted that unprompted to Dave and to Hugh. And I
think he appreciates everything right now, more so than a
lot of guys in his position around the league. And
it trickles down from him to the players. But it
all comes from the coach. Man I the team flying
(32:24):
into the radar, which is the strangest thing in the
NFL is a team that returns mostly and intact a
roster that won a Super Bowl last year. And yet
would you tell me Madden has him tenth tenth overall? Yeap,
and you don't.
Speaker 3 (32:40):
And the funny thing is that it is just as laughing.
Speaker 4 (32:43):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (32:43):
And the funny thing is it's like if that were
to happen, like you mentioned to the the kind of
the old guard the all, could you imagine what would
be being said right now about no one's giving us
a chance, So everyone's overlooking us and.
Speaker 2 (32:57):
You know, barking every day every day. I think these guys,
these guys like it. Yeah. I think they like to
fly to the right. I think they like the underdugmentality. Hell,
do you see this today? This is that, this is
another grid. We'll wrap it up with this. Yeah. The
dumbest thing in the world is the NFL Top one
hundred list. Oh god, I know. And here's where it
became stupid. Yeah, Devin Witherspoon is not in the top
one hundred. I think he. I think they showed the
(33:19):
guys that just missed, like the ten guys that just
missed stupid. He's one nine. Oh my god, Devin Witherspoon
is one nine. Yeah, you're just you're not paying attention,
you know. But he's the funny thing is Devin. He
might be the loudest voice on the field in the game, right,
(33:39):
He's always chirping, he's always talking. And yeah, for him
to be not even in the top I kept I
kept looking at this list, going, well, okay, whatever, I think,
what do they have two guys so far? I think
they just have two. I think they Williams, Leonard Williams
and uh and Ernest Jones. Right, there's only like twenty
spots left they won the Are you sure that? I mean,
that sounds so diabolical that Devin Witherspoon's not he's white.
(34:02):
He was like one or nine. It's like right right
right next to like Tyler Warren Jez is what it was? Yeah,
it was. It's ridiculous, I mean it, But that's that's okay. Yeah,
this guy, this guy will use that for motivation. Oh
my god, right, seven, are you Oh my god, that's
so bad? Can you believe that is so bad? He
is one of the premier defensive players in the league.
(34:23):
He's arguably the best defensive player on what was the
best defensive team in the league last year? Yeah, and
he's he's not in the top one hundred. Yeah you go,
you go figure that one out.
Speaker 6 (34:33):
Huh.
Speaker 2 (34:33):
That's why these lists are stupid. But you know what,
I just gave it three minutes, so it's I'm the
dumb one here, not not not the NFL. They got
me talking, all right. We'll come back. Wrap up hour
number one, Getting ready for Molly want Monday on a
Monday coming up at one o'clock with Nate and Chris
Stanby for that don't forget. You can text in your thoughts, comments, questions,
concerns four nine four or five one. That is Koma
Doadge text line four nine four or five one, and
(34:56):
we'll take the talkbacks as well. Go to the iHeartRadio
app red microphone speak into it at ninety three point
three KJRFM. We'll get some talkbacks coming up. Love your
thoughts on Seahawks. Also certainly on the trade deadline four
nine four to five one to coming tote text line
and then the talkbacks as well. We'll do those at
two thirty. Wrap up Hour one Getting Ready for a
little Mollywop on a trade deadline day. Let's go. That's
(35:16):
coming up at one on nine three point three kJ FM.
Speaker 1 (35:21):
Now back to Ian Ferness at the Virginia Mason Athletics
Center and our special coverage of Seahawks training camp, brought
to you by the Boweling Classic on Sport n three
kJ r FM.
Speaker 2 (35:36):
All right, if you've been a chair before, we male
op a top of the hour, Nathan and Chris. Yes,
they are standing by, see the tax people. Yes, well,
yes we are mollywopping today. Yes, the boys are on standby. Yes,
they're coming on right to rock and roll. Here we go.
Don't worry, don't worry. Didn't have them last Monday. People
were upset. I'm like, well, they're playing at eleven o'clock
while we have them on retinuel playing That makes no sense.
But today, trade Den, I don't think we've ever had
(35:57):
a mollywop actually on a trade devil.
Speaker 7 (35:58):
Yea.
Speaker 3 (35:59):
Isn't it normally on like a Sunday or something like that. No, no, no,
it's like the day of the week. It just yeah,
it feels odd that it's on this Monday.
Speaker 2 (36:07):
So anyway, we'll have those guys popping on here just
a few minutes and there's nothing else has happened that's
of significance, right, Nope, not at all.
Speaker 3 (36:14):
I mean a couple of dead another couple of relievers
have been moved. The biggest thing that I'm seeing is
there's not, like I mean talked about this in the
break here, there's not a lot of bats that are
being moved around right as at this point. Radley Rutchman
is the only one. But like you look at his
like last three years and even just this year, he's
like a mid seven hundred ops guy, you know, a
far cry. Obviously the heat brings value with the defense
(36:35):
of the catcher side of the ball as well. But
that's like the best bat that's been moved, and I
guess Taylor Ward would probably be number two after that.
Speaker 2 (36:42):
To be honest.
Speaker 3 (36:43):
So I don't know, Well, that's kind of a big
thing that I'm noticing during this trade deadline so far.
Speaker 2 (36:48):
Baltimore is a good example of why you probably need
to go for it when you think there's even a
glimmer of hope. Absolutely, because they're only a couple of
years removed from being very Mariners.
Speaker 3 (37:01):
Like right, they had a lot of young guys and
they wanted to stay on their timeline and they didn't
make a lot of the big moves the wind now moves.
And now look at them right.
Speaker 2 (37:11):
Now, they're just now they're selling yep, just falling up.
It's it's it's insane, you know. I mean the Alie
Rutchman's a cornerstone piece for their team, right they have
now gone. So they've they've made the decision to just
overhaul it. Uh. And that's why I like, I do
applaud with what Jerry and Justin have been doing in
that sense, like they understand that, like if your window
(37:31):
is open, you have no idea when it's gonna slam shut, right,
like none. And honestly, maybe it will, Maybe it will
after this year, because maybe we've seen the best of
cal Rawley. Ever, God, I hope not, I really hope not. Well,
I went back I want to say, like, hey, like
the home run yesterday and it felt like, well, it
feels like the power is it coming back and all that.
(37:51):
So let's just let's just look at the splits here
for a second, shall we. Yeah, In the in the
last in the last week, in the last week, cal
Raley he was sorry about this. He was three for
twenty three that good in the I don't think I
could be wrong. I don't think it's good now. But
(38:12):
and and out of those three, two of the three
hits were home runs, so you're like, Okay, well, maybe
maybe the slugging is getting back. He slugged at four
to thirty five for the last week, but that's because
he's like, the only hits he had were those, right,
but he hit one thirty. If you go back to
the last fourteen days, his slashes are batting average one
(38:33):
fifty nine, on base two sixty, slugging three eighty six
ops sixty six.
Speaker 3 (38:38):
It's never a high average guy, right, He's never gonna
be the guy that you know slaps a couple singles
here and there, but he's not walking.
Speaker 2 (38:43):
He's not doing anything besides hits seven for forty four
in the last two weeks, exactly twelve for seventy six
in the last four weeks since coming off the DL. Yes,
we've seen a little bit of pop. I for one,
I don't care about a three hundred nine foot fly out.
I don't care. Yeah, like like you know who you know,
(39:04):
because we can't have it both ways. We did not care, No,
we did not its thanks, Mike. I appreciate that. You know,
like we can't have it where we complained all those
years about Justin Smoke's warning track power. Oh god, right,
don't bring that dame back into this conversation. And was
that not the case though it was it was We've
given justice Justin Smoke. I mean that boy, he hit
(39:26):
that hard. You know his foul, but it was hard.
Oh he just just barely missed. I don't know, man, No,
it's when the ball goes over the fence. That's a
good thing wherever it is, not not missing by twelve
feet in center field, like, no, just stop it. I
think that Jerry's thoughts and when he said this last week,
(39:47):
or Justin's or whoever it was Jerry when he said, hey,
you know, like our our biggest improvement offense is going
to come inside and they're laying there they're hoping that
it's Cal Naylor, Julio. Randy's been fine, yeah, right, or
anything good. He's been your best offensive player this year.
(40:07):
But those four guys, I mean again, Can Zone's been
maybe your best guy, yeah, consistently in the second half.
So it's been Randy, Cole Young and Can Zone that
has been your offense. Yeah, it's a weird it's a
weird trade Trade deadline day, Yeah, a strange one. Just
trying to wrap your arms around it. All right, Well,
speaking of that, we will mollywop next. Let's do check
(40:30):
in with Nathan and Chris. We'll do that on Mollywap Monday,
brought to you by Simply Seattle Simply Seattle dot com

Speaker 1 (40:49):

three point three k j R FM sports headlines.
Speaker 2 (40:56):
All right. Headlines have brought to you by Frost Fruit
Corps Light Choose Chill MS. When the series against Twins

After losing on Friday, they traded for Taylor Wards Day.
More coming up in Molliwak Monday moments from now. Series
against Tigers starts tomorrow. They're off today. Lots of things
going on in Major League Baseball. In terms of trade deadline,
we'll get to all those Red Sox loading up for
(41:18):
the playoffs. Notre Dame USC rivalry renewed beginning in twenty thirty.
They announced today Satders lose in Portland, sixth straight loss,
most enfranchise history. That was on Saturday night, storm faced
New York Liberty tonight speaking along losing streaks or I
think they've lost thirty eight thousand in a row and
poaches back. The US men's national team keeps their coach.
That's a good thing. Yes, good thing. That's a very
(41:40):
good thing for the US despite the early exit earlier
than hope for exit this year. All right, it's a
trade deadline day. We got to get to the boys.
Malliwalk Monday.
Speaker 1 (41:51):
Nay, it's Monday. Then that means one thing. It's time

Seahawks Headquarters, Virginia, Mason Athletics Center, trendy camp continues. No
fans out here today, nice and quiet. We can kind
of get a nice little, good little feedback here with
(42:41):
the boys here for Malliwap Monday. Help me out, Chris
Nathan e the one who have we ever had an
official Mollywap Monday on a trade deadline day before? No?
I don't think so, no, no, so this is kind
of this is fun. This is really fun.
Speaker 8 (42:55):
Yeah, yeah, here are energy in that answer there?
Speaker 2 (42:59):
Or will it be all right? Hey? Before we get
to before we get to trade deadline stuff, and we'll
get a lot of topics to get to. And by
the way, we're gonna keep Chris up. We'll turn Nathan
Leos after the second segment, but we'll keep Chris around
for the two o'clock hour just in case stuff happens.
And the trades are made names that we don't know.
That's why he's here. He'll tell us who they are
(43:20):
and if they make sense for Seattle or anybody else,
especially teams in the American League. So all that's coming up.
Before we get to that, let's just talk about the
week that was for the Mariners and how things kind
of looked and how they transpired over the week. Of course,
we saw they won two out of three over the
weekend before that, not so good with the Dodgers series.
(43:41):
So let's get opening thoughts on the week that was
before we get to trade deadline. Let's talk about on
the field first. Nathan Bishop fire Away, Yeah, I feel like.
Speaker 9 (43:49):
The team played one good game last week. It was
the five of home run outburst against the Dodgers, which
was really I mean when I say one good game,
that was legitimately arguably the most fun game of the
season so far.
Speaker 2 (44:02):
Like that was just a blast.
Speaker 9 (44:03):
You go into the stadium of the best team in
the universe and you go toe to toe with them
big bashers going left and right. As we've always been
talking and I've always been saying, Dom Canzone once again
to the rescue saves this team by hitting two home
runs and they get a great victory. The rest of
the time they look like but they look like they've
been looked. They've looked for another the last what month,
month and a half or so. They got to win
(44:24):
on two on Saturday because the Twins forgot how baseball
is played and what the rules are. And then yesterday
they you know, really felt very nineteen ninety six Mirriors, honestly,
just having a bulpen come out and just hemorrhage runs
after your offense gets some big hits, but credit to
the guys. So that's the thing about on Sunday. So
(44:45):
we've seen this team falter before in the past years.
We've talked a lot about that, but invariably they have
always been able to pull themselves out of it. Well,
this year it feels like they just haven't been able
to pull themselves out of the crap. But Sunday that
felt like the kind of thing of we're not beholden
to momentum, we're not beholden to the past. We can
choose to just change what's happening right here and right now,
(45:08):
and that's what they did in the bottom of the
ninth and they really needed it because the Houston Astros
are in first place in the American League West, which,
if that holds straight up, one of the most embarrassing
thing that's ever happened in the Jerry to Poto tenure.
If the twenty six Houston Astros whin the AL West,
that's I mean, just you know, I would say, just
hang him up and retire. But we all know that
Jerry's not allowed to be fired or to leave. Even
(45:29):
if he wants to leave, he can't. He's like baked
into the walls at this point. They'd have to tear
down the stadium and fumigate it so he can't go anywhere.
So but either way, it would be very embarrassing if
the Astros won. But you know, we're gonna pivot to
the thing that gets talked about later today, I'm sure.
But the thing that this team needs to do is
get a whole heck of a lot better as far
as roster, because we've seen over one hundred and ten
(45:53):
games now of them just being I don't know, the
least enjoyable baseball team to watch since at least two
nineteen feels very twenty eighteen to me this season. So
it's just it's just gross. It needs to get better,
all right, Chris Crawford, fire away.
Speaker 8 (46:08):
I'm gonna just go quick because I want you to
get to all your trade deadline stuff. I think they
were extremely fortunate to win both of those games yesterday
and in particular Saturday, And if not for Royce Lewis,
basically forgetting how to play baseball, the Mariners probably don't
win on Saturday. It's the stupidest thing I've seen a
non Mariner do in a very very long time, and
(46:28):
I'm super appreciative of it. Thank you so much, Royce.
Gift basket is in the mail. Sometimes it's better to
be lucky than good, and the Mariners have not had
a hell of a lot of luck, if we're just
being honest. Have they played well, of course not. But
have the Mariners had a bunch of good breaks? No,
So it was kind of nice to see a couple
of good breaks. Now, you've got to play good baseball,
(46:51):
and this is going to be a gauntlet in August.
It's going to be really, really tough, but you got
some winnable games coming up, and you know what, it's
awesome to see the Houston Astros take over first place
while Nathan is one hundred percent correct. It would be
embarrassing as hell if they win the division. The cool
thing is the Mariners are going to win the tiebreaker
against the Astros. That's something that really matters here too,
(47:13):
as long as they don't completely as TB. I think
the Mariners are going to win that tiebreaker, and they've
played well against Houston over the last couple of years,
so that presents opportunity as well. That series against the
Dodgers was just hot garbage outside of that first game,
and it showed they're a far long ways away if
I think, for being World Series contenders. Even if they
(47:35):
make this trade or a trade in the next two hours,
that gets like a substantial thing, which who knows if
they're going to do or not. I kind of doubt it,
but it's just nice to still be in the conversation
because a bad series against Minnesota could have been well,
we would have been talking about a lot different trade deadline.
Speaker 2 (47:51):
I think, does it change anything, Chris, do you think
in their minds that would ended up happening with the
weekend series? Does it change anything? The fact that they
won two of three and were able to kind of
keep their heads above water. Does that change anything, Chris
(48:12):
in terms of how you think they approach it.
Speaker 8 (48:16):
It probably shouldn't have. But I will say if they
would have lost, if they would have been swept here,
I think it changes a lot. Like the Luis Castillo trade,
certainly is going to happen either way, because I just
think they really wanted to move that contract. And if
you happen to get a reliever who can help you,
so be it. But I don't think you see the
trade they made today. If they're not in if they
(48:38):
get swept by the Twins, or even lose two of
three against the Twins, I think they would have been
a very standpat organization. And now you put yourself more
into the position of buyer. We'll see exactly what happens
over these next two hours. And by the way, guys,
things can leak after those two hours as well. It
takes a little bit for these trades to get processed.
But yeah, I do think it certainly helped their position
(49:01):
to win two games against a Twins team that's been
playing pretty darn well, whether they deserve to win those
games or not.
Speaker 2 (49:07):
Nathan, do you think it should have changed their thinking?
As you just said, They've scuffled through one hundred and
nineteen games or whatever it is so far and have
looked kind of the same all year. I mean, do
anything even have changed your attitude about this team over
the last three three days.
Speaker 9 (49:21):
No, because probably wrongfully, but just because I'm stubborn, and
because my eternal stance on all of this is that
the seattlemanner should be doing whatever they can do in
order to make the world first World Series in franchise
history as soon as they possibly can. And since there
are only three games out of first place in the
world's worst division and they've got plenty of wild card opportunity,
they should sell anybody. Anybody should be for sale in
(49:43):
order to make this team better. The American League is
trash still, there's still no great teams out there. Even
with Boston Surgeon and getting Adlee Rushman today, there's no
reason that this team can't get hot in the playoffs
and go make the World Series. So they should be
doing whatever they can now. I was shaking my head
at the beginning because I don't think that this weekend
really move the needle of what they are wanting to do,
which is what they are doing, which is hedging because
(50:05):
that's what they like to do.
Speaker 2 (50:06):
They're hedging a lot.
Speaker 8 (50:08):
Hey, the Astros just made a trade.
Speaker 9 (50:11):
So they don't have a good farm system. Chris, how
did they do that?
Speaker 8 (50:13):
Astros are acquiring Dalton Varshow from the Blue Jays. According
to the channel Rome of the Athletic, that's a very
interesting move.
Speaker 2 (50:21):
Thoughts on that real quick, Chris, Yeah, I mean.
Speaker 8 (50:23):
It improves their outfield defense. It's, you know, because of
how bad Texas has screwed the pooch here and also
Jacob de Grond declining a trade I believe to Atlanta.
We don't know exactly where, but definitely invoking his no
trade clause them seeing that they are absolutely in this
when you probably could have had them as sellers earlier
(50:44):
in the month. It doesn't like move the needle or anything,
but it's a very solid depth piece for a team
that has dealt with a lot of injuries and does
not have the greatest outfield defense. Dalton Varshow can go
get it in the outfield.
Speaker 2 (50:58):
Let me recap something real quick, because I just asked
you guys effectively in two different ways, the same questions
that affect them at all. What they're doing with the
three games over the weekend, taking two or three from Minnesota.
I wonder how just wondering out loud, Nathan, i'lllet you
jump in first. I wonder how much Houston has changed
(51:19):
its line of thinking in the last say, seven days.
Speaker 7 (51:23):
Gosh.
Speaker 9 (51:23):
I mean, I don't know, because I feel like the
Astros and this is not a fact check opinion. I
do actually try to do some research sometimes, but this
is not one of those times that I've done that
full caveat. I feel like Houston is always trying to
be aggressive at the deadline, and I feel like the Astros,
for better or for worse, I mean, they definitely I
was joking with Chris thirty seconds ago about them not
having a good farm system. They just don't care, man Like.
(51:45):
It's not quite like the sense of like the Padres,
where a J. Pelar literally does not care about the
farm system and we'll trade the kids for anything. But
the Astros are trying to win every year during the season. Now,
they've cut back on their spending a lot. They've done
They've let some guys walk in free agency, but when
the season is going, they're trying to win as many
(52:05):
baseball games as they possibly can. Even though they have,
by all intents and purposes, an absolute barren wasteland of
a farm system, They're still going to go out there
and get better. And I bet that's the mindset that
they've been thinking with until it really, really really really
flips bad for them.
Speaker 2 (52:20):
All Right, let's get to we'll kind of go in
chronological order starting over the weekend, and then we'll move
into today's move by the Mariners again, its trade Deadlin Day.
It's wa wat money brought you by Simply Seattle, Simply
Seattle dot com. Mollywop fifteen is your discount code at
checkout Mallywop fifteen. Type that in there, go check stuff
out at simply Seattle dot com. So the Mariner's trade
(52:41):
Luis Castill over the weekend, they pick up a prospect catcher,
an outfielder who is good three years ago and has
them been to the bigs this season, and a possible
addition to your bullpen in a leverage arm situation. I'm
gonna say this and maybe you guys will just tell
me I'm crazy. To me, it's it just screams salary dump.
(53:02):
They wanted to get rid of Castillo's money off the
books six starters. We all know the situation with six starters,
the piggyback and all those things. I look at it
a little bit different. I know he's had a little
bit of a down year at Castillo. I get that
dude was an absolute beast in some of the biggest
games for this franchise since he came here from Cincinnati,
an absolute warrior. I'm not gonna I understand why the
(53:27):
move is made. I also worried with Bryce Miller particles
floating around in his elbow. I had this really bad feeling.
And maybe it's because I've been a Mariners fan for
fifty years, Like this really bad feeling. They're gonna go
from six starters to four here pretty quick. You know
when when when all of a sudden, Miller's pieces in
his elbows start exploding or something alike. But I just
(53:49):
have that. I hope that doesn't happen. I hope I'm wrong,
But I don't want to give a team I'm not.
I'm not one that's going to apply a team for
dump and salary. I'm just not. I'm not giving them
an a plus. And wow, what a great move. They
saved money. That's what this was about. Am I wrong, Chris, No.
Speaker 8 (54:06):
No, not at all. Now there are perks per se
to doing that outside of financial stuff, like you are
getting a you are going to a normal rotation. You
are getting a reliever who was better than the Nick
Devila's who is better than those guys. But this was
mostly salary. And it sucks because I got a bunch
(54:27):
of comments on mile Y after the trade about how, oh,
we're so excited that we got rid of this contract. Guys,
shut up, just shut up.
Speaker 2 (54:37):
You're you're wrong.
Speaker 8 (54:38):
It's it's not good to be right of a contract
of a good player, and Luis Castillo is still It's
just it's just ridiculous that to be so invested in
John Stanton's bottom line that you think, oh, that's a
good thing that we're getting rid of this guy. And
you know, does this trade may be easier Becau because
(55:00):
of Kate Anderson and Ryan Sloan the potential of them
coming to help you. Yeah, I think so, And I'm
super excited, and I think, honestly, Kate Anderson is better
than Luis Castillo at this point. We'll have to see
how it works out, but I'm a big believer in
that talent. I think he's the best prospect in baseball,
and I think that he should be pitching for the
Mariners this year. But I'm very frustrated by the lack
(55:22):
of appreciation for what Luis Costello did for this franchise.
You very disappointed that people care more about the financial
outlook of the Seattle Mariners more than what's going to
help the Seattle Mariners win the World Series because the
Mariners didn't get better with this move. They didn't they
at best pushed. At best, you pushed by gaining a
(55:44):
guy who is better than those Davilas and those Cole Wilcox,
and also added an extra arm now right, because the
bullpen was a little hurt by going with this six
man rotation. Andrews has brought it up very well on
his Locked On recaps, and it is something that you
have to be cognizant of. But it's a salary dump.
This wasn't a move to get better. I really like
(56:05):
Boston Smith. I think he's a top ten prospect in
this system, but this is similar to me to the
Paul Seawall trade, where I would have loved this trade
in November or December. I don't love this trade on
July thirtieth or whatever the hell date it was. It
just it doesn't send the right message to me. Many disagreeing,
(56:26):
but that's just how I feel about the situation.
Speaker 2 (56:28):
Well, I mean, listen, they won two games after it,
but like you could see from the reaction of his teammates,
they're not happy. Yeah, right, like they weren't happy with it.
I mean, not quite to the Seawall level, but they
they weren't happy. Nathan. I'll let you go because I
know you are concerned about ownership's bottom line and if
and their profitability. So we got from there.
Speaker 7 (56:47):
Yeah, I just can we can?
Speaker 9 (56:48):
We just step back here for a quick second and
just remind everyone as we're talking through this, you're talking.
If you say that you like this trade for Seattle,
what you're choosing to do is your choosing to opt
in to caring about a billionaire's money. That's what you have.
There is literally no other argument for this trade other
(57:09):
than well, the Mariners exist in this artificial economic limitation
set by their cabal of dorks from the eighties who
had one good idea of around the personal computer and
have never done anything useful for humanity since and that
I have to opt into caring about all of that,
and I don't have to. I want the Mariners to
(57:29):
win the World Series. If they had paid all of
Luis Castillo's contract this year and next year, could they
have gotten way more talent back for him, Hell yes
they could have. Would it be a better team because
of it, Hell yes they would be. Would they have
a better chance of winning the World Series for the
first time ever? Hell yes they would. I don't care
about anything else. Screw the money, Screw these owners who
(57:50):
make this team over and over and over again. Make
this kind of decision. It sucks so bad. And if
you disagree, just remember these guys don't care about you.
Yeah they don't. The billionaires don't care what you think.
Speaker 2 (58:07):
That's all. Thank you?
Speaker 8 (58:08):
Can I can I make one amendment to that, rough Quaid,
because I agree with everything Nathan said. The one thing
I want to add. It's either caring about John Stanton's
pocketbook or the naive and I cannot stress the word
naive enough belief that oh they're gonna reinvest this, this
is going to be a way for them to go.
Speaker 2 (58:25):
Have you ever done it? Number one?
Speaker 8 (58:26):
They've never done it? And number two, Are you freaking
kidding me that this ownerships group is that cheap that
they have to move Louise Castillo in order to go
sign a couple of ten million dollar players? Are you
freaking kidding me?
Speaker 9 (58:38):
Come on, come on, like, can I just echo on
to that one? Just just remember yourself, just go back
in time. If you're older than twenty five years old.
When they traded Robinson Cano, what were we told, we're
gonna take those savings, We're gonna stockpile them away, and
when it's time to build a winner, we're gonna spend them. Well,
then when Manny Machado and Bryce Harper and Francisco Lindoor
and all of these great players became available, the mirrors
didn't even bleeping try to sign those guys, never even tried.
(59:04):
They sat on that money and they squatted on it.
They traded Gino for money break, That traded Jared Helnick
for a money break. They traded all of these guys
just to save money that they then squat on and don't.
Speaker 2 (59:15):
Do crap with it.
Speaker 9 (59:16):
You don't buy it ever ever.
Speaker 2 (59:18):
Buy By the way, Chris Larsen is online one from Microsoft.
You might want to talk to you real quick about that.
Speaker 9 (59:26):
How doing these days? Chris?
Speaker 8 (59:27):
It stucks doing really well right now, so I can't
say anything too negative.
Speaker 2 (59:31):
But Windows eleven sucks. I'd rather have Windows ten because Chris,
because Chris brought your name into this mix, Andrews, I'll
let you fire off on the Casio trade real quick.
Speaker 3 (59:43):
Yeah, I mean, I totally agree. My thought is both
things can be true. I don't want to trade Luis Castillo,
but if you are in the mind that you have to,
which again I don't want to. I guess you could
say they were able to get rid of his contracts
while getting at least something in return. But at the
(01:00:04):
end of the day, I wanted to keep this guy.
I think, honestly, you can make an argument that Luis
Castillo would have been a better bullpen arm than Sir
Anthony Dimingez. At this point, it's just yeah, it's just
a question of what you wanted to do there. And
the biggest thing is what Nathan just said, if you're
going to trade him, actually go and make your team better.
Speaker 2 (01:00:22):
Right.
Speaker 3 (01:00:22):
You could have eaten some money and gotten a much
better return to go and win the World Series this year, right,
And that didn't end up happening. So yes, I get it.
You're looking at Kate Anderson. You want him to come up.
You already have six guys or five now after the trade,
so that that's gonna be something that you're looking forward to.
Speaker 2 (01:00:39):
But Ian mentioned it too. You could easily go from
six to four really quickly.
Speaker 3 (01:00:43):
And Kate Anderson has an innings cap as we've all
kind of figured out at this point as well, So
it's not like he's gonna come in and instantly be,
you know, a savior to this team or anything like that.
So and the big thing for me is it's another
clubhouse presence that you're getting rid of. And we've seen
how fragile this clubhouse is at this point. So you
got rid of Gino Suarez, who I think held this
(01:01:05):
group together so much better than a lot of other
people may have, you know, really anticipated at this point,
and now you're getting rid of Luis Castillo, who everyone adoors.
Speaker 2 (01:01:15):
So if nothing else, your clubhouse got worse. All right,
let's do this, take a quick break. We'll come back.
They did make a move today that that does help
the baseball team immediately. I think we can all agree
with that. With Taylor Ward, at least he helps with
the getting guys on base because he gets on base.
That's a good thing, doesn't he has. There's a proud
tradition in Baltimore, started by Brady Anderson many years ago,
(01:01:36):
that you hit a lot of home runs one year
and then none the next. He's falling into that category,
but he does get on base, leads the American League
in walks as well. Talk about Taylor Ward and look
ahead to the trade deadline, which comes up at three
o'clock on ninety three point three km.
Speaker 1 (01:01:52):
Now back to Ian Ferness at the Virginia Mason Athletics
Center and our special coverage of Seahawks training team by
the Boweling Classic on Sports Radio point three kJ R FM.
Speaker 2 (01:02:07):
Laura, we are back. It is uh molliwat Monday, brought
to you by Simply Seattle Simply Seattle dot com. Molliwa
fifty to check out. All right, boys, here we go,
Uh Chris fire Away. Taylor Ward.
Speaker 8 (01:02:23):
Tend Award is somebody Mariner fans should be pretty familiar
with because he used to beat the crap out of
him for a long time. And you know, the Baltimore
makes the trade there, they give up Grayson Rodriguez, and
they assume they're getting the the thirty plus homer guy
that he was last year and a guy who draws
a good amount of walks. They got the walks and
they got none of the power. But this is a
(01:02:45):
guy who, like Ian mentioned before the commercial break, draws
a ton of free passes. He is an excellent approach
at the plate. The power just hasn't been there. But
what he does, and I know Mariner fans, you're going
to just scream when you hear this. He gets on base.
He gets on base against left handers. He has been
a lefty killer for a long time. And I know
you here immediately think of Rob Refschneider and Christin Orfia
(01:03:08):
and Dono Vincelano and all these guys who just haven't
worked out. But there's a little bit more of a
higher track record than those guys and being a little
bit closer to an upper echelon player, not an upper
echelon player, but certainly compared to those guys. He's definitely,
you know, the three to four win player. He's on
pace to actually have his best season by war. It's
(01:03:30):
a solid defensive player, gets on bas the type of
guy you can hit first or second, or if he's
sitting in near the bottom of your lineup, you know
that's not so bad either to have somebody who can
turn that lineup over. He addresses in need. He addresses
a need. He's a fine defender. I imagine he'll get
a chance to play a lot of right field, assuming
they're left fielder isn't traded in the next hour and
(01:03:50):
a half. Anyway, it's a solid move and you didn't
give up anything really substantial to.
Speaker 2 (01:03:56):
Go get it. Nathan, where are we by the way
and the ref tracker? I think it was him and Pollock?
Where are we at with that?
Speaker 9 (01:04:03):
Oh, I'm so sorry. We we actually stopped keeping track.
We're now we're now trying to track pree Il Rob
against post Il Rob and where I think we're at
one hit post Il to fourteen hits before the Il.
So we've started a new tracker. I don't have the
numbers in front of me, but I'll make sure that
I report back. It sounds like he's a lot healthier
now we're all rooting for Rob. I'll just add that
(01:04:23):
also with Taylor Ward, who I think the thing with
Ward is obviously the the on base percentage. But like
the track record at Chris's point is what I really
looked to. Like the fact that he's not hitting for power,
the fact that he's he's offensively basically right handed JP
Crawford this year both complimentary and derogatory. I would say,
is abnormal for his career, Like whatever is going on
(01:04:45):
with that power and you never know, like just a
change of scenery or another I on the swing, somebody's saying, hey,
Taylor X y Z and then he unlocks that. I mean,
what did he hit in twenty twenty five thirty six
home runs? Yeah, the power is there, man, Like. I
like it because he's not replacing anything in right field
that you're gonna miss, like and I'm not saying that
to be a jerk about the guys that are probably
(01:05:07):
not going to be playing in right field right now,
but that's a huge need. If all Taylor Ward is
is what he is right now, which is, as I said,
right handed hitting JP Crawford with good defense, that's a
huge improvement for this team. And then if he gets
the power back down the stretch man, it's a steal.
They didn't give up anything to get him.
Speaker 2 (01:05:23):
Man, Well, Hopey, come on now, let's go.
Speaker 9 (01:05:27):
Sorry, I missus Hoppy. If you're listening, I think your
son's a very I hope he has a very long
and fruitful career.
Speaker 8 (01:05:33):
I mean he could be a good high leverage reliever someday,
but I didn't see anything. And the fact he has
no pitch to get left handers out is a big
concern because today's day and age, when we you can't
have a Tony Fossis and your bullpen and Ian, I'm
sure you love that reference. It makes it much more
difficult to be a guy who can't get at least
(01:05:53):
or can't get hitters from both sides of the played out.
So it's very difficult for me to imagine that they
regret this straight too much.
Speaker 2 (01:06:00):
The two other guys that gave up Chris just organizational
depth guys.
Speaker 8 (01:06:05):
Keith Law told me that the seventeenth rounder guy whose
name I already forgot about, is a guy that some
people have started to like. He's looked good in the ACL,
so you know he's the one who has a chance
to be a starter. Brock Moore has elite stuff, but
just no idea where the hell that stuff is going.
Like the walk rate is something like six for his
(01:06:26):
MiLB career, probably just organizational depth. But the third player
in the trade who's so good that I can't think
of his name right now, is probably the one to
pay the most attention to it.
Speaker 2 (01:06:39):
Okay, let's do this in our final few minutes here
before we let Nathan go. Molly want money about to buy?
Simply Seattlesimply Sail dot com mollywop fifteen at check out
for your discount code, mollywop fifteen. Simply Seattle dot com
for all of your needs. Okay, Nathan, Like, realistically, in
the final was it just under an hour half about
(01:07:01):
eighty seven minutes to go before the trade deadline is
here and gone? Nathan, what would you like to see
them do? Like, just realistically, what do you think they
need to do? What would you like to see them do? Here?
And I'm not even talking about specific players, just in
general terms, what do you want to see them do? Yeah?
Speaker 9 (01:07:18):
I would love to see I mean, there's so many
different ways that you could go with this. And I'm
not saying that the list. I don't expect this list
that I would give to be to be fully checked off,
but any one of another high leverage reliever would just
be a godsend. I'm not count County, Sir Anthony Dimingez.
I think he could be if you know, everything goes right,
he could be that guy. But he hasn't been, so
there's not a reason to think that he will be.
(01:07:39):
So a high leverage reliever would be fantastic. A right
handed hitting infielder who can actually play some defense, and
god forbid, I mean, honestly, if I'm dreaming, I can't
remember how in depth we've talked about this on the show.
I would love to see a major league shortstop. And
this is not a shot at Cold Emerson, who I
absolutely love. The kid does not belong in the position
that he's in this year right now. It reminds me
(01:08:01):
of twenty fifteen Mikes Inino. It's just not a good
fit in twenty twenty six. So a right handed hitting
shortstop would probably be the dream acquisition for me. I
just don't think that that's very realistic because there's not
a lot of those guys out there.
Speaker 2 (01:08:14):
All right, Chris, take that and run with it. Hel realistic,
and what Nathan said is out.
Speaker 8 (01:08:18):
There right now, it's somewhat realistic. The reliever thing is
still there, like there's still plenty of relievers. I really
wanted them to get Luke Weaver. Unfortunately the Pirates offered
a very good prospect, and good for the Pirates for
making a move in trying for the first time in
what seems like eighty years. The infield thing is the
most interesting thing to me because I wholeheartedly agree and
(01:08:40):
I don't care if it's a right handed hitter, a
left handed hitter, somebody who somehow just stands in the
middle of the plate and twerks like I don't care,
like I just want a good infielder. If cj. Abrams
hits from the left side, I don't care that he's
not right handed. I want a guy like that, like
Jeremy Pania could have been had a few weeks ago,
that's not gonna happen, and I that they would have
(01:09:00):
been willing to deal in to Seattle anyway, But like,
you gotta go get another infielder. You cannot rely Colt.
Emerson's defense has been at best, okay, probably below that
and relying on Brendan Donnovan treating him like a trade
deadline acquisition. And I swear to God Jerry and Justin.
If I hear that nothing's going to happen, but I'm
gonna be really upset about it, Please do not tell
(01:09:22):
me it's like a trade deadline acquisition. He's someone you
already had.
Speaker 2 (01:09:25):
Shut up.
Speaker 8 (01:09:26):
I'm just telling you it's a pre shut up from
Christopher Vincent Crawford. You gotta go get a reliever, is
the most realistic thing. And if if they're watching this
bullpen right now and thinking that Sir Anthony Domingez fixes everything,
and that you think that just getting Matt brash in
maybe three weeks back is going to be enough, no
way in hell. There is no way in hell even
(01:09:47):
if Ryan Sloan and Kate Anderson came up to help
your bullpen, I'd still want to go get another arm
because Bizarto is clearly tired. It's so obvious. It may
not be by velocity, it's by command. You can tell
that there's so much middle, middle and the lack of spin.
He's just giving up ding dongs all over the place here.
You've got to go get another reliever. It sucks that
(01:10:09):
they weren't able to get a weaver, but there are
some plenty of guys that you can go get to
make this bullpen better.
Speaker 2 (01:10:14):
I feel like Bizarto's pitched in every game this year?
Am I wrong in that? It's actually all right? Okay?
I just feel like, hey, you know, it's a day
that ends with why and Bizarto's pitching again? That's uh?
You take you take Casey.
Speaker 9 (01:10:28):
Legomina away from Dan Wilson. He's gonna smash that Bizaro
Carlos too, You kidding me?
Speaker 2 (01:10:35):
Yeah? And you take away Carlos Barguess, what's the man
supposed to Doh my gosh, all right, let me let
me let me throw the Mason Miller sing out there
just for giggles. It doesn't feel like it's gonna happen.
But Nathan, like Mason Miller. Would you be willing if
they did give up one of their top two prized
possessions in the Miners, Sloaner or Anderson? What would you think? Well,
(01:11:01):
first of.
Speaker 9 (01:11:02):
All, it would be, by leaps and bounds, the most
courageous thing that this front office has ever done as
far as trying to actually leverage into a World Series winner.
So I would begrudgingly acknowledge that and be very very
very very excited for Mason Miller, because we haven't seen
a lot of reliever seasons in baseball like twenty twenty
six Mason Miller. It's pretty historic what he's been up to.
(01:11:24):
But if it's Ryan Sloan, who I understand why everybody
says he's the second best pitching prospect in baseball or
some people do. I think I can probably win some
deal with it. But if it's Kate Anderson, who should,
as Chris said, be pitching in Seattle right now. Now,
we're talking about trading a major league starter for a
major league reliever, and unless it's the best reliever, which
(01:11:44):
it is, or the worst starter, which it almost certainly
is not, I have a really hard time getting behind that.
But outside of Kate Anderson, I'm probably getting pretty excited.
Speaker 2 (01:11:55):
If what about if it's n Emerson Hancock.
Speaker 9 (01:12:00):
Yes, I think I personally am okay with that. I
think that one of the coolest Like I'm such a
negative guy, I know, but I really think one of
the coolest things about the twenty twenty six Marris has
been Emerson Hancock's season. I'm really happy for the guy,
but I just don't know how I feel about this
being his new baseline or the new normal for him,
And what are you supposed to do when you're a
big brain, smart guy.
Speaker 2 (01:12:20):
You buy alow when you sell high.
Speaker 9 (01:12:22):
So this feels like a sell high opportunity for Emerson Hancock.
Speaker 2 (01:12:25):
Chris Is was Miller not redundant? I mean, I always
better than Munyo's. But then you move munyos into the
high leverlge where I get that, But then you're gonna
get brashed back at some point. It just feels like,
I mean, you got to get there first, You got
to get to the night dining first. Yeah.
Speaker 8 (01:12:43):
Sure, I mean it would be really nice to say
if you have Matt Brash and Mason Miller and Andres Munnos,
if you have a lead after six innings, you feel
really really good, like beyond right good, You're going you
always win? Yeah, yeah, yeah, always win and real quick.
On the Kate Anderson thing, just because the padres are
asking for him doesn't mean that's a serious thing. Like
(01:13:05):
I asked for kJ R to pay me when I
co host for Ian, it doesn't mean that I actually
get it.
Speaker 2 (01:13:10):
Like that's not.
Speaker 8 (01:13:13):
Ask for things you don't actually get them. Like the
question for me would be like are you willing to
move a lazarro Montes for him?
Speaker 2 (01:13:22):
Are you willing to move like a Ryan Sloan?
Speaker 8 (01:13:27):
I really struggle to move top ten prospects for that guy.
But I also think the Padres have a little bit
of sunk in cost fallacy because they gave up the
number two prospect in all of baseball, the universal number
two prospect in all of baseball, to get him. So
you may feel like, hey, we have to get a similar,
if not better return in order to justify it. If
(01:13:47):
you can do it without moving those two guys though,
Ryan Sloan and KATEA. Anderson, you have to do it
else everybody else will be on the table for you.
Everybody else would be on the table, including their starting pitching.
Like if not for this, If not for this Luis
Castillo trade, I think George Kirby for Mason Miller would
have been a really interesting one to talk about. It
(01:14:09):
would have been a very fascinating one to talk about.
But it's not one you can do now because you
just don't have the starting pitching depth.
Speaker 2 (01:14:14):
In my opinion, day, if I'll let you wrap it up,
Chris is going to stick around for a while, but
I'll let you wrap it up with this the if
this is it, if moving Castile and picking up Taylor Ward,
if this ends up being it, thoughts.
Speaker 9 (01:14:31):
It's a step backwards and a step forwards there overall,
and I think it's it's a little bit different because
you traded from a position the the player you traded
was from a position of redundancy for starting pitching, and
the player that you acquired was at a position of
need in right field, corner outfielder. From an overall talent perspective,
it's it's kind of a wash for me. Taylor Ward
and Luis Castillo this year it's spinning distance of approximations
(01:14:54):
of each other. But it just be disappointing.
Speaker 6 (01:14:56):
Man.
Speaker 9 (01:14:57):
This is another year where I feel like and her
fans are getting to the deadline and you guys have
been right. You guys have pushed back on me.
Speaker 2 (01:15:04):
The last couple of years.
Speaker 9 (01:15:05):
This front office really has stepped up and made some
really great acquisitions at the trade deadline, and it's a
shame that their off seasons continue to put us in
the position where we have to basically come here at
every trade deadline and say they need to make four
or five great acquisitions in order to build a decent roster,
and the fact that this team that they fell so
short this past offseason, along with their manager, that they're
(01:15:27):
now in a situation where you can't super get upset
if they don't go and add four or five more
guys because they haven't played like it. So it's just
a bummer, man. It's it's kind of in line with
the whole season.
Speaker 2 (01:15:38):
If this is all that it is.
Speaker 9 (01:15:39):
It's just kind of a shuffling of deck chairs where
the deck chairs are in on formation. That makes a
little bit more sense now for everybody to be able
to see and talk to each other while they have dinner.
But I don't know, it's just kind of a big
wet for me.
Speaker 2 (01:15:53):
I know, Jerry's sitting in his office going, I heard
what Nathan Bishop just said. Wait tell I do Wait,
Telly sees what I do in the next twenty five minutes.
Uh it's or an hour and twenty minutes or whatever.
That's what he's gonna say. All right, go sell a house.
All right, go sell sir, I will do so all right,
that's Nathan Bishop. We're gonna keep Chris around. We got
a lot to get to. That's Nathan Bishop Christmas stick
around Trade Deadline Day. We're at Seahawks training camp, Virginia
(01:16:17):
Mason Athletic Center. They're on the field. I can't really
tell you what they're doing because it's no fans here
and we're kind of restricted. But oh boy, man, what
happened a minute ago? Wow?
Speaker 7 (01:16:25):
Wow?
Speaker 2 (01:16:25):
Thanks Ian, Wow. I wish I could tell you. Oo man, Yeah, incredible. Actually,
it's very quiet. Nothing has happened. We're doing some special
teams drill a moment ago, and they've broken off into
team positions. Okay, we'll take a break, come back in
the two o'clock hour, just to tease ahead. Two o'clock hour, Chris,
(01:16:46):
we're gonna get into the Trek Schoople thing. You know,
it's the worst thing ever for baseball. Blah blah blah,
all that stuff. We'll do that in the two o'clock hour.
We come back, we'll wrap up what the mirrors have done,
what they could do. Trade Deadline Day, Major Leage Baseball
nine three point three k DFM.
Speaker 1 (01:17:02):
Now back to Ian Ferness at the Virginia Mason Athletics
Center and our special coverage of Seahawks training camp, brought
to you by the Boeing Classic on Sports ninety three
point three KJR FM.
Speaker 2 (01:17:16):
All right, wrapping up our number two and trade deadline.
We're an hour and nine minutes away until the Major
League Baseball trade deadline for twenty twenty six comes and
goes real quick. To wrap up this our Chris Anders
telling me in the break Mets taking on some Weavers
contract money. Is that right? Andrews? Yes, that is the case.
Speaker 3 (01:17:35):
So that was made it even more of a Mariners
could have done this sort of situation for me.
Speaker 2 (01:17:39):
That was one that that was one people want to
see happen here, right Chris.
Speaker 8 (01:17:43):
Yeah, Yeah, absolutely. Andrews and I did a trade program
or a trade preview, and it's funny. We talked a
lot about Taylor Ward, who they end up getting, and
we talked a lot about Luke Weaver, and it just
seemed like such a natural fit. Now, I'll give Pittsburgh credit.
They gave up a really good prospect, and the Mariner
comp to that, like Nick Becker, would be the most
(01:18:04):
natural one. And Stiffer is more advanced and has been
better in the miners than a Nick Becker has. So
you're talking about moving one of those top seven guys,
which is a borderline top one hundred prospect for a reliever,
and there's a little bit of risk there, But I
certainly would have done it just because I think Luke
Weaver not only helps you a lot this year, he'd
be a great addition for your bullpen next year as well.
(01:18:26):
That would allow you to play around with some of
the relievers that you have as well. So yeah, it
would have been something I did. But I kind of
understand too that maybe moving the Farmelos, the Celestins, those
guys would be a tough move to to digest for
those guys as well.
Speaker 2 (01:18:42):
You listen, you do this for a living rotal world
and everything else that you do out there. You talk
to scouts. You understand this world more than any of
us do. Are the Mariners more reluctant do you think
to move their top guys than other teams?
Speaker 8 (01:18:59):
Yes, yeah, I think they are. I think that they
are one of the more prospect huggy teams. Now, look
they've and look the other thing here is too. Nathan
brought this up last week, like, yes, they have been
willing to go get that move in twenty twenty four
and twenty twenty five. In the deadline right. The Randi
Rose Arena trade fell in their laps because Randia Rose
(01:19:20):
Arena was playing terribly before that trade. The Arizona thing
fell in their laps because the Mariners had needs at
first base and third base and none of the other
contenders did, so it fell in their laps in that
way too. So while I give them credit for doing
that move, you can't just completely ignore that circumstances broke
exactly their way in those situations as well. The Mariners
(01:19:41):
have shown the willingness to get things done, though, I
will say that, but you're not gonna be moving those
top guys like unless you are getting the elite, elite players.
And I don't think the Mariners consider Mason Miller one
of those guys. And I don't think they consider Tariq
Schooble as a rental one of those guys. I just
feel like they maybe are a little too precious with
(01:20:04):
keeping the timeline and keeping these prospects in play.
Speaker 2 (01:20:08):
I love the term that was a prospect, Huggy. That's
that's a good one. Yeah, I think about that from
this perspective, and that's why I asked you, you know what,
Edo had a great line Andrews. Remember this when we
were talking a couple of months ago. The it was
not as good as leave your plums on the table.
It was damn close to that, but it was Edo
was talking about on the table mentality, Thank you Edze,
(01:20:31):
long live you. Uh he. But he brought up with
in hockey the time to like, you know your prospects
better than anybody else. Sure, and sometimes they got to
move them before it's too late. I think they did
that with Harry Ford. I think that I might. I
could be wrong, but I think they did that with
Harry Ford, right, with for for Aer right, so I
(01:20:55):
can like all these are the top guys we've been
talking about. Selston like these guys, not just the two pitchers.
I understand why they're holding on to those guys, right,
I do understand that, But in your mind they are
a little bit too attached to some of these guys.
Speaker 8 (01:21:15):
I think so, just because of what's available. I know
why I say golden opportunity way too much, But there
is such a golden opportunity here in the American League
where the best team might be the Tampa Bay Rays.
And are you kidding me that you can't go out
and usurp the Tampa Bay Rays, and you know, you
haven't seen the real buyers in the American League outside
(01:21:37):
of the Boston Red Sox, who, even with the moves
they've made, are still a very flawed baseball team. I
think that it's a mistake to not take advantage of
these windows because these windows can shut real quick. It's
like being on like a yacht where it's nice and
stuff and you have the window open and you think
it's gonna be great, but bad weather can come real
quick and you got to close that window real quick.
(01:21:59):
Look at the Baltimore Orioles. They look like a team.
They were gonna be the contender forever. Now they're selling everybody. Yeah,
it's very easy to become Baltimore, even if you do
everything right. Baseball is such a precarious sport that everything
can change that quick. So you better take advantage of it,
and you better win now, and you better do it
(01:22:20):
for my ninety six goddamn year old grandmother too.
Speaker 2 (01:22:23):
Well. And you listen, and we brought up we gotta
get a break in here, I know, Anders and I
brought that up though with Baltimore, like you don't know
when that thing's gonna close. Like if I would have
told you three years ago that the Orioles are selling
off in twenty twenty six, you're like, what are you
talking about? Right?
Speaker 6 (01:22:40):
Like?
Speaker 2 (01:22:40):
What are you talking about here? And that's what they're
doing right now. All right, we'll take you a break.
We come back, Chris, And why you do me a
quick favor glance around American League. I don't care about
the National League, American League. Who's helped themselves so far?
Where should we be concerned? We'll do that with an
hour left to go before the trade deadline. You got
all your coverage right here in nin three points KFM

Major League Baseball deadline comes up in fifty seven minutes.
They are off today. Are the baseball team as a

Tigers MLB. All kinds of trades. We'll get into those
in just a couple of seconds. By the way, former
(01:23:31):
Mariner Robbie Ray going to San Diego from San Francisco.
Did they have enough pants for him? No, they do not,
not no, not not not down there, not down there.
Notre Dame USC rivalry renewed beginning in twenty thirty, and
football was just unceremoniously dumped this year. Both sides were
to blame. So they gonna take a four year break
(01:23:52):
and move on. So we should do with the Apple
Cup to be honest with you, seriously, like why, like,
what are we doing here? We're not gonna play basketball anymore?
Speaker 4 (01:24:00):
What are we doing?
Speaker 2 (01:24:01):
Sounders lose to Portland for the sixth straight loss, most
enfranchise history, two to one on Saturday night. Down God,
did you see anybody see Jackson's post before the game
on Instagram?
Speaker 4 (01:24:12):
No?
Speaker 2 (01:24:13):
What was it? It was a stand up at Providence Park.
That's what's called right Providence Park? Yes, yeah, he goes,
I'm coming at you from the worst place on planet Earth.
He leans into it. Man, good for d he leaned
so far into it. I was loving it. Then I'm
rooting hard. And then it became evidence that second half

went that we were it was Yeah, the the COVID

That'll be there. Seventeen thousand Floss in a row poaches back.
US men's national team manager back under contract. He'll be

thing for the US men. Let's move into our number
(01:24:56):

twelfth Man Sports Radio ninety three point three KJR FM.
Speaker 2 (01:25:24):
I gotta tell you I was joking earlier about you
know what was going on here at training camp with
a little fake teas to everybody. But you know what
I can't tell you in the last two hours, there
is absolutely no doubt that the smoke from wherever eastern
Washington to Spokane fires up north of the border is real.
(01:25:46):
Like when I got here today, we have blue skies
and now it's just a haze, absolute haze over this.
It's our state is in a really really bad situation,
and just thoughts certainly going out to everyone in Spokane,
Spokane County, a lot of friends and family over there
for us and our family and so far when's okay,
But that's not the case for everybody. It's been it's
(01:26:08):
been really bad over there, uh, east of the mountains,
and so we knew this was going to be a
bad year with the lack of snowfall and everything else,
and it's proven to be that and then some. So
hopefully they can get things under control in the near future,
but not too promising over there. So all right, let's uh,
let's move into our number three. With the trade deadline
now fifty three minutes and forty five seconds away. As
(01:26:31):
Chris pointed out earlier, there could be stuff that will
happen after three o'clock, but soft he'll be on the
air at that point in time. So let me to god,
oh he will, because we'll get trade for somebody that
none of nobody's heard of except for you, and so
we'll need to get you on the air before we
get to the Mariners. Let's have this let's have the
(01:26:53):
Trek Schooble conversation, Chris, Let's do that. I found it
interesting that, you know, there seems to be two sides
of this in the baseball world. There's those that are
just sideways at the Dodgers. What are we doing? Baseball's broken?
Screw the Dodgers, and and then there's the other side
(01:27:14):
that says, well, I mean other teams could have gone
after him as well. I don't know how realistic that
part of it is, because you're not gonna rent him
if you had given up a haul. The Dodgers, by
all accounts, I think, have a good farm system. You
can tell me yes, orm knowing that regard. But okay,
so they're a good organization. Yes, they spend more money
(01:27:36):
than anybody, but they're also a good organization. They're not
the Las Vegas Gold They're not the Vegas Gold Nights.
Vegas doesn't develop players like they just don't, you know,
But the Dodgers do and then they go out and bye, guys.
I laugh when I hear the well, this will be it,
this is this is why we're gonna have a salary
cap in baseball and all this will be the tipping point.
I'm like the tipping point game years ago. If it
(01:27:58):
ever happens, which is still I'm highly doubtful that it
ever will. But Chris who is to blame here for
the rich getting richer and schooble?
Speaker 8 (01:28:09):
So I totally understand the argument that this is boring,
you know what, I mean to see one team getting
all of these players. But I think what this points
out more so is not the blame for the Dodgers
going and making themselves better. Shame on the Detroit Tigers
(01:28:30):
for giving up when they're right in the middle of this,
Like they are just as close as to Seattle Mariners
to a playoff spot as the Detroit Tigers. Like it
is that I think they're a half game back. This
will be a big series to determine some wild Card
standing stuff. And shame on the other teams who decided
that they would prospect Huggy and that they would be
willing to not willing to improve their system to go
(01:28:51):
get in my personal opinion, the best pitcher in baseball,
and if it's not him, he's in the top three
at the very worst. And what it does is the
reason why it's points out it's bad for baseball is.
It amplifies just how many teams truly aren't that concerned
about winning and not concerned about hanging that pennant. That's
(01:29:13):
what it points out to me. And by the way,
just real quick on the salary cap thing, it's never
going to happen, like never, It's a zero point zero
zero percent chance. The only time salary caps happen is
if you break unions, and the MLB union is still
one of the strongest in baseball, or if you open
your books and are willing to do exact revenue sharing
(01:29:35):
and not exact per se but like fifty two, forty eight,
fifty three forty seven that stuff. Major League Baseball is
never going to open their books like that. It would
open up a can of worms that would feed countries.
And I'm sorry you have to eat worms to do it,
but it would feed countries. It's bad for baseball because
other teams should have been trying here. The Seattle Mariners
(01:29:55):
should have been trying to get to rescooble the Boston
Red Sox. It's the whole bunch of teams and perennial
contenders should have been trying to get this guy. Shame
on those teams for not trying more so than shame
on the Dodgers for actually giving it.
Speaker 2 (01:30:11):
You know what, Yeah, I agree with you, Andrew. I'll
let you jump in here in a second, but I
I I agree with you. Here's my thought. The first
of all, with the Dodgers, are they supposed to not try?
Like that's the other thing, Like I I like people
are mad at them, Like, well, why are you pissed
at them?
Speaker 8 (01:30:31):
Like?
Speaker 2 (01:30:31):
Are they supposed to just say, ah, we're good, right,
We're good, We're gonna We're just gonna stamp pat No, man, listen,
they have the financial wherewithal to be aggressive. They have
the the equity, the everything behind the Dodger brand to
do this. They know they can go out and resign
the guy. You know, there is tampering that took place.
They talked to his agent before they made a trader.
(01:30:52):
Is he gonna resign? Will be yes, of course it is,
blah blah blah, all those things. And they went for it.
Good for them. You know, let's use the peak Caroline
and from the day you know, we're going for it. Yeah,
we're just gonna go for it here, We're going for it. Good. Good,
that's that's not the Dodgers problem. And we could argue
whether or not it's major League Baseball's problem, but you
(01:31:14):
just said it, and I agree with you to think
that this is gonna be the tipping point. Oh now
we're gonna have a salary cap. Like stop it, like
like we you know, even arguing about the salary cap
to me feels like a waste of time. Sometimes it's
just it just is. I mean, there's there's there's pros
and cons for it, for sure, and if it was
somewhat realistic, I think the argument or the debate and
(01:31:37):
the conversation would be a lot more relevant and pertinent.
And we will have that in November December. You know,
well we're gonna have it. But I'm with you. It's
a strong players it's a weird players union too. It's
very top heavy. It's really top heavy. The guys that matter,
they are keeping the guys that don't matter down in
(01:31:57):
terms of salaries and free agency and things like that.
I mean, I've if I'm a player, I'm more worried about, like, hey,
can we have shorter avenues and pass the free agency? Right?
Like that's got to be like it, it's ridiculous, Like
no sport has that for your first round picking. In
your first round picking football, you may have to wait
five years, and that's if they exercise the option on
(01:32:18):
a year five. But you're more likely we're gonna get
a new contract at four. Everybody else is getting a
new contract at four NHL entry level contracts three. I mean,
you go through the list, these guys are these guys
are hooped and the majority of the league makes less
than a million dollars, right, I mean it's it's not
that that's not but I mean there's more guys that
are in the below that than there are above you know,
fifty or whatever the hell the number is these days.
(01:32:39):
But I don't I don't blame the Dodgers at all.
I do blame other teams for not getting aggressive. I
blame the Tigers. We talked about this there. They were
a playoff team last year and they could be a
playoff team this year. Why don't you get why? You know,
maybe he just refused to resign there, although listening to
his comments, I don't know if that was really.
Speaker 9 (01:32:58):
The case, right, They weren't willing to meet his demands. Well,
real quick, this is a massive thing that people forget
about too. To say, the Detroit Tigers low ball to
reschoo Ble and arbitration is quite the understated. They offered
thirteen million dollars less than the Detroit Tigers did. The
(01:33:20):
Detroit Tigers filed at nineteen million, Schooble filed at thirty
two million.
Speaker 8 (01:33:25):
And that set some bad blood there. And I don't
blame him one bit because nineteen million dollars for a
back to back side Young Award winner in today's day
and age is such a low ball offer. It was
a pathetic offer, and it set such bad blood, and
it made the chances of resigning school ball so much less.
Speaker 2 (01:33:43):
I don't think you can forget about that in this No,
that's a good point, all right, Andrews. You want to
jump in for it, yeah, I mean really quick.
Speaker 3 (01:33:49):
The Yankees are acquiring Elliot Ramos, which was one of
the bats that the Mariners were reportedly going after as well,
but it seems like they kind of filled that gap
with Taylor Ward.
Speaker 2 (01:33:58):
I just wanted to mention that.
Speaker 3 (01:33:59):
So yeah, But in terms of the Scooball situation, Look,
I'm upset because of where the sport is at, and
I don't care really whose fault it is at this point, right,
And it's just the rich get richer. And we've seen
this in other sports where you know a lot of
(01:34:19):
players have power. We talked about it with hockey Ian
that everyone wants to go to Vegas or Florida or
you know a lot of the teams that are you know,
ended up winning recently. But it's multiple different teams at
this point, right, there's still some sort of like, okay,
there's at least a competition for the top three or
four or five teams in the sport. There isn't that
with the Dodgers. Right now, everyone's consensus best team in
(01:34:42):
the league is the Los Angeles Dodgers, and it has
been that way for at least probably four years now,
and they've shown that with their back to back World
Series championships and now adding even more to that at
this point, and yes, you could easily say the Mariners
could go out and match what the Tigers got from
(01:35:03):
LA to get trek scouble but knowing that he's not
going to resign here, knowing this is a whole other
situation that you don't want to offer what trek scuoble
wants in free agency.
Speaker 2 (01:35:14):
That's gonna deter.
Speaker 3 (01:35:16):
Almost every other team except the team that, hey, wait
for it, that's probably where he's gonna sign in free agency.
So that really like, yes, you can look at specifically
what they got, but no other team's willing really to
do that for a couple months. And Chris talked about
this in the break. Would you have been willing to
give up a certain prospect or to just for two
months of trek scouble? I probably would, But I also
(01:35:39):
wouldn't necessarily blame the Mariners for knowing that you're not
going to get him for more than two months and
giving up an Emerson Hancock and a you know, a
Felon in Celizon or something like that.
Speaker 2 (01:35:48):
All right, let's do this, Anderson Hurst, Chris Scofferty for
us with you. It's Seahawks training campf Reginia Mason Athletics Center. Chris.
So far, with forty four minutes left to go before
the deadline, who in the American League has done the
most to help themselves?
Speaker 8 (01:36:01):
It's a really good question, because I don't think anyone's
gotten all that much better. Houston's gotten better, and I've
been told that they're going to get a pitcher before
this deadline as well. The Red Sox getting Adley Ruschman.
I know they give up a lot for him, but
that is a massive upgrade to what they have there.
Tampa Bay just made a really nice trade for a reliever.
I think the Mariner should have been after and I
(01:36:23):
got to be honest, it's a little bit of captain
hindsight and getting Tyler Wells someone I didn't think about,
but that's a nice pickup for him. But nobody's really
leaped off the table here. The White Sox getting or
excuse me, the White Sox have gotten a smidge and better,
the Guardians getting Joe Adele. It's a lot of treading
water outside of I think that Red Sox move. Unless
(01:36:44):
I'm really missing one. Toronto has both bought and sold,
although I've been told that they're already trying to trade
Jose Soriano after getting him today, so that could be
a Rashid Wallace Atlanta.
Speaker 9 (01:36:55):
Hawk situation in there.
Speaker 8 (01:36:57):
Wow, it's been a lot of tread water. It's been
a lot of trading water, and it's it's That's the
good news for the Mariners is that nobody has really
made that leap. The bad news is the Mariners haven't
made that leap either, So for.
Speaker 2 (01:37:11):
In this division, Houston, though, has improved a little bit.
And if if they had a picture listen pitching the issue, right, Like,
if they if they had a starting picture, this quality
starting pitcher, that's gonna that helps them a lot, right,
That's that's like a big need for them right now.
The Rangers have done nothing right.
Speaker 8 (01:37:32):
No, well, the closest thing they've done is apparently tried
to trade Jake de Gram, and Jake de Gram has
invoked his no trade clause. There's been talk about them
listening on Corey Seeger, There's been talk on them listening
on Nathan e Ovaldi. It doesn't sound like their buyers,
and that's pretty crazy for the position that they're in
right now. And obviously Oakland and Los Angeles are just
(01:37:55):
so far out of this thing that they are just
completely irrelevant at this point. But yeah, it's really just
the Astros making the var show move and they will
get another starting pitcher, I'm sure in the next forty
three minutes or so, or a reliever or something of
that ilk. But again, a lot of treading water.
Speaker 2 (01:38:11):
Texas feels like the team that really was affected by
that sweep by the Houston right, Like they were really
like they were really affected by that. They were really
that that that really kind of got And it's funny
because they're still slightly ahead of the Mariners, you know,
like if you're looking through there.
Speaker 7 (01:38:31):
Yeah, I don't get that.
Speaker 2 (01:38:32):
I don't get that.
Speaker 8 (01:38:34):
It's disappointing because you know, some of this, you know what,
this kind of reminds me of a little bit. Although
they have a worse record. Remember when the Mariners got
off to like a thirteen and one start and they
were like twenty games above five hundred, and they still decided, boy,
this is a lot of smoke and merrors, and we
decided to make some moves or at least not get better. Yeah,
maybe Texas is just being a little too bit there.
(01:38:56):
I hate doing that though, in a year like this
when there is no clear cut favorite, because Texas has
enough good players that they could do something. And I
really like their coaching staff too. I think they don't
get nearly enough credit for the job that they have done.
And they could call up a prospect like Sebastian Wolcott,
assuming he's healthy. He just got placed on the il,
(01:39:16):
but one of the most talented prospects in baseball, and
he could be a bit of a difference maker for him,
similar to what Evan Carter did for them in twenty
twenty three. So I'm happy that Texas isn't trying to
get better because it helps the Mariners a lot. Yeah,
but just John cbe baseball fan, it's pretty disappointing to
see a team make a move like that.
Speaker 2 (01:39:37):
Well, I think, yeah, the difference is you're kind of
abuted to it. Yeah, you alluded to it. The difference
is this, like if you're Seattle or Texas. The difference
between this and when they were the smoking mirrors above
twenty games about five hundred year you were the midst
of the heyday for Houston, right like that, like like
like that was the mid stuff. I'm not mistaken that
(01:39:58):
when you're referencing that time frame, Houston was a wagon
like you like that was. That's not the case this
year in the American League and certainly not in the
American League West. The pillow fight that is this division.
So that is what's kind of strange in that right
in that regard that you wouldn't go down that road
as well. I you know, it's an interesting dynamic because Seattle,
I think still in the back of their mind, maybe
(01:40:21):
it's wishful thinking, maybe it's something else. I think their way.
I think they just think that, like Jerry said, cal
Julio Naylor get going. Maybe that maybe that's your additions,
and that's not what a fan wants to hear. But
in this particular year, that might be the most realistic
thing to improve your team in terms of offense, is
(01:40:43):
hoping that happens. It's Cal And by the way, two
home runs for Cal in with the last seven days,
but he's got three hits. Two of those were home runs.
That's all he's got. Like like, and I'm not one,
I don't really care about warning track power justin smoke.
So don't don't come at me with the of threehundred
ninety nine ball.
Speaker 7 (01:41:00):
No, I get it.
Speaker 8 (01:41:01):
I will say too, it's interesting that those homers have
come from the right side. I believe the last three
have come. And I wonder if he's bothered with that
left handed swing right now, if that that's one of
the reasons why we're seeing him more capable of driving
the ball from the right side than the left side.
Have no evidence of that, but it is pretty interesting
that a guy who has been notoriously better from the
(01:41:24):
left side, he did a very nice job from the
right side last year, but was an absolute wagon from
the left. He's interesting to see him have more success
from that right side.
Speaker 2 (01:41:33):
That is that is that makes a ton of sense.
All right, fourtnite four to five one is it's cobadatch
text line. You got questions, we'll you got comments, you
got complaints, will answer those will come back. We'll let
Chris keep scouring the wire out there and see if
anything's happening that's of relevance that we need to discuss.
Maybe they'll do something in the break. Maybe they'll trade somebody,
maybe they'll acquire somebody. You don't know, we'll find out.
(01:41:54):
We'll do that when we come back. Nin three point
three KJFM.
Speaker 1 (01:42:00):
To Ian Ferness at the Virginia Mason Athletics Center and
our special coverage of Seahawks training camp, brought to you
by the Boweling Classic Moon Sports Radio ninety three point
three kJ R f M.
Speaker 6 (01:42:16):
Hey, guys, Dan Wilson here, you know analytics, you know
Britill He told me, I say, you know one hundred
and seventy seven times during a press conference. You know,
I fought hard to get those numbers up, you know,
big side for the organization. Guys are fighting hard, you know,
getting Taylor Ward in here, you know, you know I'm
excited to fight hard and pinch hit him for Rob Refsneider,
you know, not playing much like I did Garber for
(01:42:39):
Roebliss the other night.
Speaker 2 (01:42:39):
Made no sense, you know, but that's what I do.
I don't make sense. You know, We'll continue to fight hard. Thanks, guys, Right,
tough one tonight, tough one tonight, tough one tonight. All right,
you got one more fire away? Yeah, wellmore.
Speaker 10 (01:42:54):
You could trade for Barry Bonds or Mickey Mannle or
Prime Griffy. But if the rest of this team isn't hitting,
If the people that we're gonna be having at the
majority of the top of our lineup aren't hitting, nothing's
gonna happen.
Speaker 8 (01:43:16):
You know why, I agree with that. One of those
guys is dead, and two of them haven't played baseball
in a really long time. So I agree that if
you traded for those guys, it would be it would
be a problem.
Speaker 2 (01:43:30):
Griffy'd be taking a nap in the clubhouse, wouldn't he.
Speaker 8 (01:43:32):
Know, Yeah, taking some photos, you know, just having a.
Speaker 2 (01:43:35):
Really good time private of Montana, you know, doing this
thing whatever. Oh my gosh, it's so good. So hope, Yeah,
I'm sure. Why is he not doing the home run
the alumni home run derby?
Speaker 8 (01:43:49):
Oh they can't afford that, man, like either, they just
simply can't. He'll probably be a surprise edition or something
like that. And are they only not televising that thing?
By the way, is that really going to happen?
Speaker 2 (01:44:03):
Wait? Oh they're not. No, it's only an in person event.
What is it Saturday? Or when is it Saturday? It's
post game Saturday, right, I believe so, yes, at least
put it on YouTube or something. Come on, you haven't
you have your own little channel. Why don't you just
stay on the air.
Speaker 8 (01:44:21):
You have your own channel, and I can you can
watch tribute to the nineteen forties firework Night and whenever
you're doing that. But I can't watch that something you
charge money for. Like, I get it being a special
event for people who are there, but I think that
game the game to not give people a chance to
watch it.
Speaker 2 (01:44:42):
I don't know if I need to I don't know
if I need to watch it. To be honest with you,
I we're a fair I mean, I'm not trying to
be that guy, but I mean, I don't know if
I need to watch a guy that never hit in
the big leagues and Ryan Roland Smith and each Rod
who still thinks he can hit. Sure, still thinks he's
on the team. Ian, but I'm gonna I'm gonna guess Buck,
(01:45:04):
you'll run into one or two. Yeah, right, And I
don't know who else. Some other guys in it that
I've never heard of. It is like the bullpen catcher
or something like that. But I can't.
Speaker 8 (01:45:14):
I have to admit I haven't looked at the roster,
but I will say I see enough people talking about
it that I think it would be the nice thing
to get, yeah, to have it on da oh yeah
yeah yeah yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:45:26):
Sure. Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:45:28):
Anything happened in the break by the way, Griffin Foster
to the Guardians.
Speaker 8 (01:45:33):
Chris Foster, Griffin to the Guardians. That's interesting.
Speaker 4 (01:45:36):
Uh.
Speaker 8 (01:45:38):
Marcelo Meyer traded from who was once one of the
very best prospects in baseball for Eric Miller. So the
Red Sox do get better in their bullpen as well,
but it's been been quiet. I think the next twenty
minutes or so we're about to see a ton of activity,
just based on how these things.
Speaker 2 (01:45:53):
Been pretty dead deadline. I'm not gonna lie. It doesn't
sound like they're moving Randy. Should they have moved Randy now?
Speaker 8 (01:46:02):
I don't think so. It would have made a little
bit of sense if you would have been out of
this In fact, it would have made a lot of
sense if you were out of this thing, or if
you had more guys who were consistently hitting. I think
trading him after he basically with the help of Royce Lewis,
won you a baseball game on Saturday that you had
to win, trading him would have been a really bad look. Now,
(01:46:24):
this is a team that has made trades when it's
a really bad look.
Speaker 5 (01:46:26):
Right.
Speaker 8 (01:46:26):
The Kendle Graveman trade was a terrible look. The Paul
Seawall trade at the time, even though it is paid off,
for sure, was a bad look. The Castillo trade is
not the greatest look either. But trading Randy or Rose
Arena after he did that on Saturday, like literally saved
your seasons. Probably too strong, but it was teetering. It
was definitely teetering. I think it would have been a
(01:46:47):
bad look.
Speaker 4 (01:46:47):
To move him.
Speaker 2 (01:46:49):
We'll read this text here four nine four five one
that it says as falls. If you don't think baseball
needs a salary cap, you're an idiot. Baseball is so
broken you can't have a valid champion if everyone isn't
playing with the same budget.
Speaker 8 (01:47:08):
Just to look at the I know the Dodgers have
won the last two to break my argument a little bit,
but look at how many teams have won championships. Look
at the Mets, who are an absolute mess, who have
spent a bunch of money, who are spending money doesn't
guarantee anything. Look at how good the Rains are and
they don't have a high payrolls. It's asinine to think
that the Dodgers are just so loaded that nobody else
(01:47:31):
can win.
Speaker 2 (01:47:31):
They have an.
Speaker 8 (01:47:32):
Advantage, But ian don't the Seahawks have an advantage over
the Jacksonville Jaguars, And don't be like the Los Angeles
Lakers have a benefit over the Charlotte Bobcats or whatever
the hell they're called right now, Like there are always
advantages in sports, there's always going to be The Yankees
(01:47:53):
and Dodgers are going to have advantages over everyone, whether
it's a salary cap or not. This idea that you
have to have one to create a competitive link is
nonsense and it's not based on anything. It is short
sample size at best that you can say that because
look at the New York Yankees. They haven't won a
World Series in eighteen years and have had some of
(01:48:14):
the highest payrolls in baseball.
Speaker 2 (01:48:16):
God forbid, they haven't won a World Series in eighteen years.
Man alive.
Speaker 8 (01:48:20):
But we are the exception. And until we move the
stadium from the indigenous burial ground, we're gonna have to
pay for what's happened.
Speaker 2 (01:48:27):
That's one hundred percent true. But but like we've talked about,
here's the thing. It's it's you know the I've been
very consistent with this. I'm gonna stay consistent. I'd like
to see it for this reason. It gives us a
basement as well, give us a four. Yes, And we've
gone through this before. We've done this exercise a number
of times. Over half of the league right now wouldn't
reach what the proposed floor would be, and that includes
(01:48:50):
the baseball team here, by the way. So I'd like
to see that because then if you have to spend
at least X amount of money and you're the pirates
of the whoever, the Marlins, the Rays, et cetera, and
you got to raise it up a little bit. Yeah,
I think that gives you a little bit a hole.
But you're right. Everyone's got advantages for different reasons, right.
And the Chicago Bulls were probably the greatest example. When
(01:49:13):
Michael left and Scotty left and they broke up the dynasty,
right and Phil Jackson was out and all those things,
everyone said, Oh, man, wait till I mean they're gonna
have money to spend. The Chicago Bulls, they're you know,
media market for you know, in the country, right, all
those they haven't been good since. No, And you would
think inherently Chicago is a place, Yeah, man, I'll go there, right,
(01:49:36):
big market, big city, cool, cool city, great city. Actually
all those things. You never know what's gonna why, why
people are going to go different places. And it wasn't
that long ago. The Dodgers weren't this team either, right.
Speaker 8 (01:49:49):
No, No, And I think it's also worth pointing out
Aaron Judge was a massive free agent who did not
sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Juan Soto was the
biggest bat to hit the free agent market in probably
twenty years, not counting O Tawny because he was the
two way guy, he didn't sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
There are still going to be teams that are willing
(01:50:12):
to spend big bucks. The Dodgers don't get everybody. They
have two of the top twelve contracts in baseball right now,
two two of the top twelve contracts in baseball. They
also have a bunch of contracts after that that give
them a huge advantage. There's no question about it. But
there's just this idea that teams can't spend or teams
won't spend. It's just the Dodgers. It's cyclical too, because
(01:50:35):
we were just talking about with this with the Mets
five years ago, and we were talking about this with
the Yankees forever. It's cyclical. This too shall pass.
Speaker 2 (01:50:43):
Let's wrap it up, Chris, with you with this before
I'm sure a panic Dave Softy Maller calls you later
if something happens, and I appreciate you spend an extra
time with us today, Chris Crawford mile, why make sure
you go subscribe to it on YouTube please and here.
I watched on after the Trade the other night, seventeen
minutes of me agreeing with you, which doesn't always happen.
All Right, we've got twenty minutes left to go. Anything
(01:51:09):
they can do that would kind of get you repped
up and say, Okay, it's been a really good trade
deadline for Seattle.
Speaker 8 (01:51:14):
I mean, if they went out and got a CJ. Abrams,
or if they went out and got honestly, if they
got Mason Miller, like assuming they're not moving Katie Anderson
and that type of thing, yeah, that would kind of
change my tune. But I will say this, even if
you go get Mason Miller and CJ. Abrams, there are
still flaws on this roster that make me wonder if
they really are World Series contenders. Like, there's nothing that's
(01:51:36):
going to make me I will get that temporary high,
you know, and think that they have a better chance
of getting to the dance. But there's nothing that they
can really do today that is going to make me
think this is fixed. My demands of them breaching the
World Series are going to be met, because I just
think there are so many flaws that you could not fix.
Speaker 2 (01:51:58):
In one deadline. You may have to revisit everything tomorrow.
Once the dust settles, we'll see how it works out.
If there's nothing more than that's fine, but if not,
we'll check in next Monday, one way or the other.
And it's a Mullywap Monday, an extra session with Chris Crawford.
We thank him for that again. Go subscribe please to
my old why you can go check him out on
YouTube by subscribe. I watch it. It's my late night viewing,
(01:52:20):
lying in bed, put the little headphones on, listen to
Chris and usually sometimes he gets angry, which I really
enjoyed those ones the best. It's kind of like the
old Husky Hawks back of the day. Great stuff, Chris,
Thank you man, I appreciate it. So Chris Crawford, the
Great Chris Crawford. Ladies, Joe my oh wa, go subscribe
right now. We'll take a break. Come back. Dave Softy
Mahler is here while a little cross talk and he'll
(01:52:42):
keep an eye on what's going on as well as
far as the trade deadline is concerned. We're about eighteen
and a half minutes away until the trade deadline from
Ajor League Baseball hits More to come nine three point
three k DFM say, and we didn't get a chance
to break down the big win by the miss Budweiser
(01:53:02):
at the hydroplane races yesterday.
Speaker 7 (01:53:04):
But you know what, I gotta be honest with you,
did the miss Budweiser really win.
Speaker 2 (01:53:10):
I don't think the miss Budweiser has been in I
don't even been going for years.
Speaker 7 (01:53:14):
You don't even know who won. I mean you, you
literally could have been breaking news to me right here.
I think it's great for people to like it, and
I don't want it to go away, Like I don't
need to be into everything we have in the city.
I think it's great that we have a women's basketball team.
It's great that we have a women's soccer team. It's
great that we have Seafair. These are things that I'll
(01:53:35):
be honest with you, I don't care about, but it's
great that we have them. Well phenomenal that we have
because people do care.
Speaker 2 (01:53:41):
People do care. People are losing their mind on Saturday
because the Blue Angels didn't go up and all the
blood the typical blade, Well, it's somebody yelled and they
didn't want the noise and sold Seafair caved it was windy, like, guys,
come on, like, give your head a shake a little bit.
Speaker 7 (01:53:57):
Well, I think I think what happened is people looked
outside and they saw the cloud starting to clear and said,
what are you talking about?
Speaker 2 (01:54:02):
Well, it was the wind.
Speaker 7 (01:54:03):
It wasn't the cloud cover.
Speaker 2 (01:54:04):
It was a wind with thirty thousand feet good year.
I don't think you could tell what it is down
here anyway. How were doing trade deadline day? How do
you trade online? Day? Buddy?
Speaker 7 (01:54:11):
How you doing good? I'm excited, man. We got eleven
minutes left to go on the clock. It seems like
every year on Major League Baseball trade deadline Day we
end up in the same spot right here, right here,
yes training, yes, yes, last year with Suarez and Nayler
and turd Ferguson, all those guys. So I think the
Luis Castillo trade we were also here. That was a
few days before the deadline.
Speaker 2 (01:54:32):
Though, wasn't the which trade was the first one? Last year?
Speaker 7 (01:54:35):
Was Nagler trade was first one? Suarez I think was
actually on deadline day? Is that right, Andrews?
Speaker 3 (01:54:42):
Maybe the day but the night before because the Marinas
are playing that night. Yeah, and it broke while they
were in Sacramento.
Speaker 2 (01:54:49):
You know that this is you know how your mind
just remembers weird things, right, because you're bringing up being
here at Seahawks. Now, I remember sitting here outside. Actually
it was like a morning practice and it was the
year that they again the year they wouldn't trade Jared Washburn, right,
never like ah and like people were losing their mind,
and I'm like, yeah, they got it, they wouldn't trade
(01:55:10):
Jared Washburn. Now teams are just dealing guys left, right
and sideways to get out from caps and right and
and salaries and everything else. But yeah, we're always here.
It feels like on Trademine's d.
Speaker 7 (01:55:23):
Well, that's exciting, right. I mean, uh, luckily, I think
they got a little better. I don't think they got
significantly better, but they got a little better. You know,
if all of these moves that they're making right with
Domingas and and Ward, they all kind of make sense
if everybody else picks up their game at the same time, right, Like,
if cal Rowley continues to do what cal Rowley's doing,
(01:55:45):
he's not if.
Speaker 2 (01:55:46):
You looked at his week, he had had three hits
in the last week. That's it.
Speaker 7 (01:55:49):
That's outstanding, right, that is incredible.
Speaker 2 (01:55:52):
Three hits.
Speaker 7 (01:55:52):
I consense the sarcasm from your mouth.
Speaker 5 (01:55:55):
Hit.
Speaker 2 (01:55:55):
Well, we need more than that. He hit one twenty
last year.
Speaker 7 (01:55:57):
We need more than that from the big dumper.
Speaker 2 (01:55:59):
PW.
Speaker 7 (01:55:59):
We need more, you were home, We need more from
the big dumper. Hey, look, we've seen flashes, right. The
light bulb is this is the the light bulb wants
to turn on badly with cal Rowley. We just have
to find a way to flip the switch and keep
it on, you know. Josh Naylor is he's like, uh,
what was the name of the character that Jonah Hill
played in Moneyball? The assistant and whatever? He gets on base,
(01:56:21):
he gets on base, he gets on base, but he
hasn't hit a home run for almost two months.
Speaker 2 (01:56:27):
Josh Naylor June first, at home, June ninth. Overall, I think,
so is that not wild that the guy has gotten
on base first? Basement that you paid a bunch of
money to.
Speaker 7 (01:56:35):
How many games in a run?
Speaker 4 (01:56:36):
Now?
Speaker 7 (01:56:36):
Has he gotten on base?
Speaker 2 (01:56:37):
Twenty five? Whatever? It is something like that.
Speaker 7 (01:56:39):
Yeah, and not one, not one of those games he
hit a bomb. It's unbelievable.
Speaker 2 (01:56:43):
And that's the whole problem is like, Okay, well you
and you said he's your first baseman, right, Like, that's
gotta there's gonna be power numbers.
Speaker 7 (01:56:50):
It's a power number.
Speaker 2 (01:56:51):
And he's slapping around like eachiro, right, who can who
can hit a home run any time you want?
Speaker 7 (01:56:56):
Maybe Josh Naylor should be hitting lead off for this
baseball team. Well here's a funny thing, twenty four game
hitting excuse me, on games or on base street.
Speaker 2 (01:57:04):
The funny thing about him hitting leadoff? Right? He steals bases?
Speaker 7 (01:57:07):
He does.
Speaker 2 (01:57:08):
Tayler Ward gets on base at a higher percentage than anybody. Correct,
doesn't steal basis, he would have the four stolen basis.
Speaker 7 (01:57:13):
He has the highest on base percentage of anybody on
the team, even higher than a Rose arena talking about
Ward now America.
Speaker 2 (01:57:21):
Correct.
Speaker 7 (01:57:22):
I saw a guy tweet me and say, well, he
also ludes the league in plate appearances. Okay, so what
he's getting on base a ton. He is literally a
machine compared to everybody else on this baseball team when
it comes to getting on base. The only guy with
a higher on base percentage is Donovan, but he don't
count because he's not qualified. Yeah Donovan, who you know him?
Brandon Donovan?
Speaker 2 (01:57:41):
Never heard him?
Speaker 9 (01:57:42):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (01:57:42):
Yeah, yeah, does he played here before?
Speaker 3 (01:57:44):
Yeah, just for a little small And that's the thing
about the whole plate appearances conversation. I'm willing to have
Donovan appearances, right.
Speaker 7 (01:57:51):
No, he just broke up there for a quick second.
Whatever genius comment you made, we didn't get to hit.
Speaker 2 (01:57:58):
I'm sure it was good though. All right, all right,
we're good.
Speaker 7 (01:58:00):
Anyway you were, you were on a roll, I was.
That was a hell of a comment. Nobody's gonna hear that.
You were actually pretty good. Thing I wasn't on the air.
We all could have gotten fired. I gave out the
boss this credit card number over the ear, and nobody
heard it. That always happens, by the way, during crosstalk.
I have no idea why we just it's like the
Gerbil for about five seconds, says that hell it grabs
a shot of whiskey and jumps back on it.
Speaker 4 (01:58:22):
Do we have it?
Speaker 2 (01:58:22):
Do we have another one of those fine power outages?
There is all what happened? No power search? Everything's good here.
It's it's all you guys.
Speaker 7 (01:58:27):
You know, I haven't been in the studio so long,
or it feels like I haven't been. There is the
generator still outside?
Speaker 2 (01:58:33):
The office. It's gone.
Speaker 4 (01:58:34):
It's gone.
Speaker 2 (01:58:34):
Yeah. In fact, the day it left, we had a
power out of you. I could I kid you not.
That is freaking power surge or something.
Speaker 7 (01:58:41):
Naylor's last bomb was on his last home run at
home was on June first. That's incredible, over two months ago.
Speaker 2 (01:58:48):
That's incredible.
Speaker 7 (01:58:49):
And his last home run overall was June twelfth against
the Washington Nationals. That's wild man anyway. Yeah, so we'll
talk about that. Chuck will join us at four, Okay,
wake him up from his nap.
Speaker 2 (01:58:59):
He be here.
Speaker 7 (01:59:00):
Grey's Abel is going to be sitting in that seat
that you're sitting in probably about forty five minutes or so.
I can't wait to tell Grey's Abel when I partied
with his mom before the NFC Championship game last year,
did you Oh, that's what I got a picture.
Speaker 2 (01:59:13):
I got a picture to.
Speaker 7 (01:59:13):
Show him when he gets uh when he swings by.
There you go. I guess which one is Abel's mom?
Speaker 2 (01:59:19):
I had no idea.
Speaker 7 (01:59:19):
The other one is Jalen's Sundell's mom.
Speaker 2 (01:59:21):
Yeah, and I guess the one that's not worrying Jalenson.
Dell's number is Diabels.
Speaker 7 (01:59:25):
You know when you're a smart guy. This pike going
a waz who You're a smart, smart dude. Are you
objected for the apple cut?
Speaker 2 (01:59:30):
By the way, couldn't care less, That's what I thought.
Speaker 7 (01:59:33):
I played golf this weekend with a couple of kops
and they don't even know when the game is, Like,
they had no idea it was. The opener was like,
oh really, ok.
Speaker 2 (01:59:43):
Whatever, it's not November anymore.
Speaker 7 (01:59:46):
No, they moved it.
Speaker 2 (01:59:47):
Okay, all right, all right, big show coming up.
Speaker 7 (01:59:49):
See it for the mild mannered and marginally objectionably Inverness.
Speaker 8 (01:59:54):
This is paddle day, saying so long everyone,
