Speaker 1 (00:00):
We'll be back out of seataks tomorrow. If you missed yesterday,
we had Bud Clark on yesterday. God, what a great interview.
Oh my goodness, was he good. He was just I
and I was telling Andrews and he told us yesterday.
You'll hear the interview. We're gonna replay it today. At
one twenty. He was He's been miked up by Hard
Knocks recently, so I'm hoping to see him in episode two.

(00:20):
He is his personality. You need to pick me up,
you need a hey, I kind of want to feel
good today. You just listen to Bud Clark at one twenty.
He's just spectacular on every level. I mean just really
and good football player. Will see where he fits. There's
a lot of competition him. Taya katta. We'll see what
happens with em and Warri. We'll see what happened just

(00:41):
Rea real quick on Eman Worrick. He's not using I
know everyone was freaking out about the scooter and Hard Knocks.
That was either day one of camp or right before
camp started. He hasn't been on the scooter at all
in the last week or so.

Speaker 2 (00:52):
Did he still have the boot on it?

Speaker 1 (00:53):
When I saw him walk and he didn't have a
boot on. Oh okay, he was carrying his one crutch. Sure,
but when I say he wasn't using it, yeah, and
I've seen him walking around, so he's I now, listen,
visuals can be really different. I think with his it's
it looks so bad in Hard Knocks, but what we've

(01:17):
seen recently. Remember again remembering that Hard Knocks when that
video was taped, probably a like twelve days ago, thirteen
days ago.

Speaker 2 (01:25):
Yeah, I think the day was July twenty sixth I believe, Yeah,
it was a while ago.

Speaker 1 (01:30):
Yeah, so he's not that now. Does that mean he's
going to play the opener? I have no idea. I'm
just we'll see it. It certainly didn't look good when
I saw him on that, but I went, wait a second.
I just saw him at practice yesterday walking out to
the sidelines, So he's getting there. He's improving. Goes back
to what we talked about the other day with Tory
Harton too. It's probably should have been more honest with

(01:50):
the coaches. Probably should have told him, hey are the trainers. Wow,
I'm hurtow And we mentioned that too, because there's a
certain catcher he was over last night, wasn't he? Yes?
He was My god. I mean Julio ran into a
ball That's why they won.

Speaker 2 (02:06):
Yeah. Yeah. And Brian Wu is home. Brian Wu home.

Speaker 1 (02:10):
Brian Wu is just special. You know, Sarah's is going
to join us earlier than normal on a Thursday. He'll
join us coming up here in a little bit in
this hour. You did a poll yesterday, I did. Can
you read that for me?

Speaker 2 (02:21):
Let me pull it up really quick. I want to
get the exact numbers. But I was basically asking how
much do Mariners fans care about making the playoffs in
twenty twenty six?

Speaker 1 (02:31):
Right?

Speaker 2 (02:31):
And this was going into last night's game, And you
know it's a lot of people can change their opinion
based off of one game. That's how it goes. You
ride the rollercoaster of the season. But M's fans, how
much do you care about making the playoffs in twenty
twenty six? I gave you three options. The poll is
still up, by the way, it's up for one more hour,
So if you want to vote, go into our nine
three three, kjr All retweeted again just to make sure
everyone can see it. Three options, Just get in. Can

(02:54):
still make a run to the World Series. That's option one.
Number two, don't care. This team isn't going anywhere, but
I still want to be a part of the dance. Okay.
Option three, I would rather this team miss the playoffs
and have a better chance for sweeping changes. So those
three options number one that just get in crowd overwhelmingly
as expected, the favorite there of seventy three point six percent,

(03:18):
so close to seventy four percent, the don't care crowd
fifteen percent, and the people would rather miss the playoffs
than make the playoffs. There's still eleven point four percent
of you out there, which is higher than I expected
it to be.

Speaker 1 (03:30):
So apathy or anger is sitting at about twenty six
and a half percent. Yeah, a slower than I thought.

Speaker 2 (03:37):
Really, Yeah, yes, it is so like I'm surprised it's
that high. To be honest, it's a little higher than
I thought. Really, when you when you offer the chance
to go to the playoffs, I think almost everyone should
accept that, no matter what situation there is.

Speaker 1 (03:54):
Greg was on his way out were here. He and
I were talking a little bit because he was all
mad about Jimmithy today.

Speaker 2 (03:59):
Yeah, it's fair, it's fair.

Speaker 1 (04:03):
I was trying I was actually trying to be like, hey,
it's okay. Yeah, you can have Jimothy and a winning
baseball team. That's why I think of Jimothy, our buddy,
Jim Elliott, realtor of the sponsors of Gordon Segments. We
were playing golf yesterday. He's in the group that's with
us afterwards. I'll get to that group later. Now his
nickname is now Jimothy Nice. I don't know if he

(04:24):
likes that or not. I don't quite I'm not quite
sure if he's into that nickname or not. But yeah,
weld Jimothy. Anyway, you could have both. And I don't
think you can or should ever begrudge the marketing staff
the sales staff because they're trying to sell tickets their job.

(04:45):
Here's the problem, Like the baseball team's not selling tickets
because they're not very good well.

Speaker 2 (04:48):
And that's the thing that I think a lot of people,
and you know, it can be the case for any franchise. Right,
they have the business operations. It's their job to get
people in the ballpark and make money, right, that's literally
their job, independent of what's happening with the team itself.
And then you have the baseball operations people that it's
their job to make the baseball team good. Right, Those
people do their jobs separately. A lot of people throw

(05:10):
them into one thing that just because the business operations
people are better at their job than the baseball operations people,
it seems like the Mariners care more about that than
a winning baseball team. I don't think that's necessarily that
they're just really good at They're just really good at
their job.

Speaker 1 (05:24):
The perception that exists is this, though, tell me, tell
me if you dance with me on this end, or
see if you if you go along with what I'm
going to say here, right, I the Seahawks are in
a different category on every level, yes, than the other
teams in town. They are just on a different level
the other teams sounders normally in a different level. They

(05:48):
don't do anything in terms of their marketing and stuff
they do. This is a down year. Let's well, we
can kind of give them a break.

Speaker 2 (05:55):
Right, I am starting to lean towards not because okay,
spend that way for a little bit now, but yeah,
but generally, yes, if.

Speaker 1 (06:04):
We look at what they've done two gms, one head coach,
multiple titles and cups and they don't worry like they don't.
I don't know if they do any marketing, to be
honest with you, I don't. I think marketing is not
even something that's in their vocabulary, not really, So I'll
take them out of it. The WNBA is a different
beast because it's not so much what the Storm do
in terms of marketing. Now they anti market to themselves

(06:26):
a couple of weeks ago, they're at least one of
their minority owners did because of that incident. And listen,
that whole thing was. It was staged on one side.
It was rage bait. Doesn't I'm not condoning what happened
by it, but I know what I know Brandy Cruz
well enough to know. You find two cute girls in

(06:46):
high school that want to be you plan them. They
buy tickets somehow, they get a ticket at court. So
it was just like, let's let's cause an issue, like
let's cause an incident, but as a whole. The WNBA
and Sopha. Cunningham talked about this again yesterday, like can
we start talking about basketball? No? No, we can't, No,
we can't. Maybe sometimes that's a good thing if you watch,

(07:08):
like did certain players play maybe Angel throwing the ball
over her head, you know, like for a shot at
temp things like that. But like, can we talk about No,
it's all that leads all about that. I think the
two teams in our town that just jump out at me.
I mean the Mariners in the Crack and are very
similar to someone. And here's how they're similar. They're similar
in this way. They they have people on the business

(07:33):
marketing promotion side that are really good at their jobs,
really good at their jobs. Because that's the case, you
hear a lot more about Jimothy Knights or Common Thread nights,
you know, like in the Cracking applot. We should applaud
them for those things. Yes, but because of that, the

(07:54):
die hard fan, the die hard fan all Cracking don't
care about winning. All they care about is doing the
common Thread jersey and you know, honoring this person and
this person and da da da dah and all these things.
And you know, look at Memorial Stadium, Todd and all that.
That's I hear that a lot. Oh yeah, Like and
then the Mariners, all they care about is Jimothy and
trading cards and you know nineteen ninety five and all that. Well,

(08:16):
you can have both trust me Jerry Depoto doesn't care
about Jimothy Knight, Right, he doesn't uh, Jason Bottrel, Lane Lambert.
They don't care about common thread night. No, they care
about putting a team. Now, have they been successful? No?
Have the Mayor's gone to the World Series.

Speaker 2 (08:33):
No.

Speaker 1 (08:34):
Both things operate in each organization independently. Like I means
tell you in the crack and office, hockey operations is
very separate from the rest of the bill of the folks.
But you work together on the game night, you're you're
selling your product. Yeah, but diehard fans have this perception.
The diehard fan has this perception that the baseball team

(08:54):
doesn't care about winning, and the hockey team, the priority
isn't winning. It's about honoring all those who are underserved.

Speaker 2 (09:00):
I take a step further that when you're not winning,
it's that much more important to have those better business operations.

Speaker 1 (09:07):
You got to put butts in the seats act and
that's your job. And the I would I can. I
can just speak for the team I work for and
just knowing what the office setup looks like in the
space and the office, I'm going to say probably seventy
percent seventy five percent of the people there have nothing
to do with hockey operations. They can't control the trade deadline,

(09:28):
they can't control the draft. Right What they can control
is can they sell tickets and put butts in the
seats and make it an enjoyable experience for the fans
that go, especially first time fans. And they do a
terrific job with that. And then they listen to you
and say, hey, concessions are too high. Let's lower the prices,
Let's give you a break, all those things. I'm going
to guess the Marriers is the same way. Seventy percent,
whatever the number is. They they can't decide who Dan

(09:53):
Wilson is going to hit fourth, but they can decide
that they want to put people in the seats. Let's
get creative. How we do that. That's what they're high
to do. The two ends of the they operate separately.
Lumping them together doesn't work. Listen, I'll be honest, I
couldn't give a rats you know what about Jimothy or

(10:14):
all that stuff. I want the team to win. Yes,
I turn on a baseball game to watch the baseball game.
I don't care about the other stuff. High Doro races
are fun if I'm in the ballpark finding the ball
into the hat. Fun if I'm in the ballpark and
I'm two or three boaties deep and smashing peanuts that
I bought for two dollars outside, because that's my repertoire.

(10:35):
I buy the peanuts outside and bring them in and
go through old package and then have to go drink
a gallon of lemon juice to cut out the sodium
later because I'm gonna die. But that's what you do.
But when I'm I want to watch the game. Not
everybody's like that. You have to attract as a professor
unless you're the NFL, different beast, different entity. Just we
came and lumped. Like when you're talking about the big

(10:57):
four major sports in this country, it's really the big
three in the Yeah, we shouldn't even do that. It
should be the NFL and the other three. Yeah, they
have to do that. I don't think I ever doubt
that the Mariners want to win. I've never doubted that.
Now you can ask the question do they want to
win at any cost? Cost being the key word. I

(11:19):
was playing golf of my buddy Murphy yesterday. He's a
former D one baseball player of longtime high school coach.
He knows the game pretty well, really well, and he's like,
you know, Jerry Depoto's brilliant. He started going through and
talking about what we're talking about the Poto. When I
go I said, yeah, I think Jerry's doing a hell
of a job. That's what's funny about your poll. Rather
miss the playoffs and have a better chance for sweeping changes,

(11:39):
I'm sure there is a good chunk of sports fans,
not casual Jimothy Knight fans, it's probably a good chunk
of sports fans in this town that would love to
see I'm gonna take the manager off the table that
would love to see sweeping changes, i e. Front office changes,
which is what you're insinuating with the pole And you know,
as my buddy murphs telling me yesterday, and I agree,

(12:00):
he's like, yeah, but the potos. Look what he's done
with the pitching staff and building up the farm system.
And you know he's the head. But it's everybody.

Speaker 2 (12:06):
How often does Joe Sheian come on and say, Jerry
Dipoto is a good.

Speaker 1 (12:10):
Every flipping week Yeah, and he's just but he's probably
limited by I said, yeah, I think Jerry is you know,
Jerry dumped Castillo's salary. Here's the difference between the Mariners
and the Dodgers. If if that was a dot, if
this team was just put him in La, yeah, you
would not be dumping Castile. You'd say, hey, you know what,

(12:31):
we're paying you a ton of money the next two years.
You're pitching the bullpen.

Speaker 2 (12:33):
Figure it out.

Speaker 1 (12:34):
Yeah, you get pitch in the bullpen. If we need
you to start again, then we'll stretch you out.

Speaker 2 (12:37):
You'll start again, and it wouldn't prohibit them from signing
someone else later down the road.

Speaker 1 (12:40):
Exactly. This team had to keep starting him because they
want to keep as a starter, made his trade value
go up because they didn't want to pay for the
next two years. Jerry is limited by that. Yes, it's
not that he doesn't want to win, and that has
nothing to do with Jimothy. Has nothing to do with Jimothy.
And it has nothing to do with Common threadnight, No bads.

(13:01):
I mean I get text from buddies all the time. Hey,
three to one after one, you better not be talking about,
you know, the common thread theme night tonight? I get it. Yeah, yeah,
but that puts people in the seats. Also, attracts new
fans into your building, your stadium, your arena, your ballpark,

(13:21):
which you need, Yes, you need new fans. You need
think about I can just tell you this how many
new fans the Seahawks had from last year. The dumbest
thing ever in this town what Okay, there's a long
list dumbest things ever. That's hard to say. I don't
want to make that a blanket statement because that's that's
not right, because there's a lot of dumb.

Speaker 2 (13:40):
Things, a lot of dumb things.

Speaker 1 (13:42):
One of the things that was not I would say stupid.
I would say both stupid and also to me infuriating.
Over the years, I hated the twelve Since twelve, I
hated that term stop gatekeeping, because stop gatekeeping. If you're
a fan, don't you want more on board with exactly right?

Speaker 3 (14:00):
Exactly?

Speaker 1 (14:01):
And yet we in this town, mostly people my age
or ten, fifteen, twenty years younger, would do nothing but
crap on, make fun of and mocked WELSONCE twelve. Why, why,
what good does that do you?

Speaker 4 (14:16):
This?

Speaker 1 (14:16):
We had five hundred thousand people roughly at two parades,
brought this entire community together every Sea Yak game. At
the end of the season last year brought the community.
Why is that a bad thing?

Speaker 5 (14:25):
It's not.

Speaker 1 (14:26):
It shouldn't be. Mariners and Kraken, just using those two
as an example, they're trying to do the same thing,
bring people into the seat. When you win, they will
come and they will jump on a battle. The difference
with the Mariners is this this year. They had that
last year at the end of the season, they had
all that momentum. They were firing on all cylinders. Everything's
coming along great.

Speaker 2 (14:44):
They didn't need Jimathy Knight to say that.

Speaker 1 (14:46):
They didn't need that. But you know what the problem is,
they do now because they came out and are having
one of the most disappointing seasons for a team. They
could still win it all. They could still win it all,
but they're having one of the most disappointing seasons on
the field based on expectations and momentum from last year.
So what happens We go back to Jimothy, a Jimothy
gold card and a Jimothy Trading card, and look at this.

(15:07):
In the middle of a broadcast, Goldsmith's gonna sit there
and spend twenty minutes talking about a damn Jimothy card.
Why because they have to because your job's put butts
in the seats. And you know who hasn't done their job.
Cal Rawley hasn't done their job. Josh Naylor hasn't done
his job. I don't care about one home run last night.
Julio hasn't done his job. You go through the list,
you know who has done his job. Cole Young, dom
canz own many home, Brian wu not road, Brian wo home,

(15:31):
Brian Woo, Logan Gilbert for the most part, Bryce Miller
when particles aren't floating in his elbow. Yeah, Emersony Hancock
break through year. Those guys all done their job, but
too many guys on the bast baseball field have another,
So you haven't done your job. Guess who is doing
their job. Guys on the other side marketing promotions. So
you can have both. They can co exist. Also doesn't

(15:52):
mean we shouldn't demand more from the baseball first.

Speaker 2 (15:54):
And that's the biggest way to get people into ticket
or deep butts into seats is to win.

Speaker 1 (15:58):
Very simple. We'll take a break, come back. Sarah's talking baseball.

Speaker 6 (16:00):
Next, it's time for our weekly visit with Eno Sarah's
of the Athletic The best baseball insight you'll get from
a nerd with big League here. He likes pics of grips,
food and beer. Will always dreaming up the next big
baseball staff. Brought to you by Georgetown Brewing Rude with

with I and here's Zeno.

Speaker 1 (16:41):
You know, sarahs jornaus Pick. Thanks for our friends at
Georgetown Brewing. I'm gonna mention more of about Georgetown Brewing
in are something good? Savement coming up? Having you with
the wildfires here, I'll do that coming up in a minute.
First of all, you know, how are you to calm
things settled down after the trade deadline the last few days?

Speaker 4 (16:56):
Oh man?

Speaker 7 (16:57):
Uh more? Even more respect for what you guys do.
After we did a lot for the for the trade deadline.
I talked straight for three and a half hours and
it was it was tough.

Speaker 1 (17:10):
It was tough.

Speaker 7 (17:11):
We will say. You guys get like advertising breaks and stuff.
We got none of that.

Speaker 1 (17:16):
So yeah, that's our that's our nightmare. And radio and
when like every now and then, the building we're in
for some reason has massive issues with power, which just
seems to be weird in twenty twenty six, but it does.
So Yeah, there's been times when it's like, all right,
we'll just keep talking because we have no commercials to play.
We're we're just here. So, by the way, you're by yourself,
and we don't have phones using either, So I feel

(17:37):
your pain. But listen, it's not like you don't have enough.
You've got a million things to say, you know, all
these guys, So it's good. Let's get right to it,
you know the I'm gonna get to the Mariners in
a second. I want to get your thoughts on the
Scooble trade, both baseball wise and also baseball business wise,
and what it says and what it means. I'll let
you take it from there.

Speaker 7 (17:58):
I you know, I don't know why this has become
a referendum on I mean I know why because the
CBA is coming up. Excuse me, the CBA is coming up.

Speaker 8 (18:08):
We're having a big We're gonna have a big labor
argument coming up, and so we're litigating, you know, the Dodgers'
role and you know how baseball looks today and whether
or not their payroll is the undoing of the entire sport.
But you know, when it comes to this trade deadline,
you know, there were other teams that were at the table.
There were other teams that were willing to put their

(18:30):
best prospects on the table, and it's reported that the
Brewers were one of those teams. So the Brewers were
willing to give up Hiss my Day and you know
some other pieces. And the Brewers are nothing like the Dodgers,
So it's not really the Dodgers' money that got them
to this point. The Dodgers are a well run organization
that scout well and they and they draft well, and

(18:53):
they develop well, and so they have the ability to
kind of put all those pieces together and go and
get Schooble even if it was only a rental. For
the most part, you know, what you saw was rentals
for cheap. The prospects that it took to take to
get other rentals that they weren't they weren't.

Speaker 7 (19:11):
Prohibited for other teams. So plenty of small market teams
went and got some reinforcements. But Scooba was the biggest
figure in the in the in the deal, and he
costs them most. And I don't I don't think it
says that much, you know, the Brewer, if the Brewers
are willing to get there, like the Brewers of a
small market team with you know, a quarter of the payroll,

(19:31):
so they were, you know, it doesn't really have to
do with money. I don't think.

Speaker 1 (19:35):
I think I like what you said there about how
well run organization they are, like, like, you can only
make a trade like that if you have guys in
your system like in which they did. It's maybe I'm
wrong here. It almost feels like the opposite of how
the Lakers have operated in that same town. Like the
Lakers just go out and somehow get don Donkic, but
you know, and and Lebron went there for they buy players.

(19:56):
I mean, Kobe feels like the last homegrown superstar they've
had in a type of thing, right and and but
you know, and we're gonna proably see that this year. Meanwhile,
the Dodgers, as you said, they got dudes that they
can make trades for other dudes with right, that's that's
a well run team top to bottom.

Speaker 7 (20:13):
Yeah, I think what has made things difficult and now
we sort of return to like you know, ken small
market teams win and you know, do they get too
much of an advantage? The daughters do both things.

Speaker 5 (20:23):
You know.

Speaker 7 (20:23):
They they scout well, they draft well, they develop well,
they spend money on development. They were like the first
to say, hey, can we give these guys good food
instead of you know, making them go eat McDonald's, Like,
could that maybe make them better athletes? They were the
first to do that. And you know that does cost money.
But you know they do all of the things. They

(20:44):
also get free agents. You know, they got Preddy Freeman,
they got show Hey, they do a lot of those things.
By the way, just as at a side, the deferred
money thing, it's it's meaningless. It doesn't mean anything. Any
Any team can defer money. The Washington Nationals deferred a
bunch of money. The Philly has deferred a bunch of money.

Speaker 4 (21:01):
A lot of people.

Speaker 7 (21:02):
Defer money, and it's not something that the teams want
and the players don't want. The players sometimes fine with
the deferring money because hey, let's say you play in California,
why don't you defer that money? And I'll get that
money when I live in Texas with Florida and I
don't pay the same kind of income taxes. Right, So
that's just the accountants like, don't worry about the ferred money.

(21:23):
That's that's the accountants on both sides battle it out
and that's what they get. But just in terms of
what the Dodgers do, they do everything, and that is
actually making a little bit harder for small market teams
because the way it used to be is the big
teams bought free agents. The Yankees and the Dodgers bought
free agents. They got old. You know, they had these
cycles where they were good when the free agents were younger,

(21:44):
and then they got bad when they were older, and
that was that was kind of their cycle. And the
small market cycle was, we keep trading our guys to
the big market teams, and we keep like the race.
We keep trading, we keep trading, but we keep young,
and we keep good and we keep cheap. And unfortunately,
what's happening is that some of those things, some of

(22:05):
those advancements that the Rays made and the Brewers made,
some of the thinking to depth they've done is now
just being co opted by you know, the Yankees and Dodgers.
So the Yankees say, why can't we run this part
of the team like the you know, the Dodgers and Yankees,
And why don't we run this part of the team
like we're the Brewers.

Speaker 1 (22:21):
You know, yeah, exactly, we can do that.

Speaker 7 (22:24):
That's made it a little bit harder recently. But you
do look right now at payroll and and success this
year and in recent times, there's there's not actually that
there's no difference really between how payroll is associated with winning.
It is very much in the regular season. Every sport

(22:45):
like baseball just fits right in. You know, there's no
you couldn't tell which one was the cap sport which
one wasn't you know? We have the Brewers, we have
the Rays, we have all these teams.

Speaker 1 (22:53):
It is, you know, serious from the Athletic Rates and
Girls podcast as well, joining us here in the Beacon,
plumanent holl I brought you by Georgetown Brewing. Okay, make
a couple moves. Luis Castile gets moved to Chicago. Uh,
he actually gets his first start later tonight, four o'clock,
our time for the White Sox, so the rock is gone.
They also bring in Taylor Ward from Baltimore. I should

(23:15):
mention that in addition to a couple of prospects, they
get Sir Anthony what's his name, Lancelot Dimingez whatever he is.

Speaker 2 (23:22):
Yes, yeah, he's still throwing.

Speaker 1 (23:23):
He's still throwing VP, I think to the Detroit Tigers
right now as we speak. But uh, thoughts on what
the Mariners did with the Castile trade and acquiring Taylor Ward.

Speaker 7 (23:35):
Uh, you know it was I guess the annoying thing
is is threading the needle because they're selling and buying
at the same time. But I think anybody who's followed
the Mariners realize that they're going to do something like that.
You know, maybe in terms of locker locker room, you know, dynamics,
maybe they'll miss you know, Luis Castillo is a veteran presence.

(23:56):
But yeah, I think Logan Gilbert's kind of taken over
at the that staff and the and the kind of
the lynch pin of the pitching staff. So I don't
I think they'll be able to, you know, look at
him for leadership. But when it comes to, you know,
the future of this team, they did open up, you know,
twenty million dollars for next year to spend an improving

(24:18):
next year's team, and they got, you know, a back
end reliever. I think he's okay, he's he's really wild,
but he's got some stuff. They got some prospects. But
the war thing I think was good because when you
looked around, they needed a right handed bat, or at
least that's what they said publicly, and I think that's
about right and it and that apparently was a really

(24:40):
tough thing to find. On the trade deadline.

Speaker 9 (24:42):
The the Boston Red Sox spent Connolly early like a
lefty major league starting pitcher, to go get Curtis Meade
because they wanted a right handed bat and it was
really hard to find right handed bats, and so they
went and got a rental right handed ward.

Speaker 7 (25:01):
And what's interesting Award is there's been a power outage there.
He was hit by a pitch early in the season
and you can see it in his bat speed. So
for a while he was content to just take walks
and hit singles. He didn't have the strength in his wrist.
The good news for the Mariners Sans is if you
look at his bat speed, he has recovered all his
bat speed, so there should be some power in there.

(25:22):
It's an excellent at bat. It's always a very excellent
discipline at bat, with contact and of real extense of
his zone. But recently the bat speed has come back.

Speaker 1 (25:31):
Yeah, that's great info. I had not heard that any either.
I had not heard that Anywherehen's like, well, what's going
on with him? Why is this bad speed? All those things?
So that's actually great news to hear. I'm gonna put
you on the spot here. I don't know if you
have it, you know, at your fingertips, you can look
it up real quick. I kind of tease this ahead
and anders this is bat on my part, I should
have told you to give you know a heads up
because we're talking about this the other day. Cal Rawley

(25:52):
continues just to be not good and and he for
whatever reason, it just hasn't happened. He hits a home
run one day and then he goes ho for ten,
you know, with three or four strikeouts, and he's just
it's just not happening for him right now. Is there
anything in bat speed you've talked about where he you know,
where he's trying to make contact and getting ahead of
what do you what can we tell from cal Raley

(26:15):
this deep into the season, is anything changing or improving.

Speaker 7 (26:19):
I think he has actually a similar problem to Vladimir
Greer Jr. Because you know, Vladimcgreor Jr. The power is
totally out. You know, he's a guy with's a great
bat speed and a long track record of success. They
both have seventy five mile an hour plus bat speed.
They both are. That makes them eighty fifth percentile or
so with bat speed. So that's not the problem. It's

(26:42):
not the sort of mechanics, it's not any of that.
Both of them have just lost their approach completely. And
you know, if anybody's watched rally, you know I've been.
I've been tuning in this week in particular, and you
know what you'll see is he'll let a few He
did this was it yesterday? He let a few cookies

(27:04):
down the middle, you know, and even the announcer was like, well,
now it's in his head, you know, like he just
let two cookies down the middle and then he swung
it two pitches outside the zone. And what I've found
is this is an amazingly sticky thing. So if you're
talking about next year, and even I would say the
next few months it should return to normal. But the

(27:25):
difference between how much you swing at pitches inside the
zone minus the difference, like the difference between that and
how often you swing it pitches outside the zone is
remarkably steady. If people say, oh, he improved his ability
to chase outside his zone, what that hitter did most
likely was swung less overall. And you know so, so

(27:50):
basically your sense of where the zone is, I think
is inherent, and I think it's very sticky. I've looked
at other players that have had as much of a
downturn as Rally has had, and the seventy players that
had the first half where their zone minus chase was
that different, sixty two of them went back to normal.

Speaker 1 (28:08):
Oh okay.

Speaker 7 (28:09):
So so like, for some reason for his career, he
swung at like seventy seven seventy eight percent of pitches
inside and zone. This year it's seventy two. And for
red of reason for his career, he swung at thirty
five pitches outside of the zone. This year it's forty. Right,
So he's just in his head and it's a It's
an unsatisfying answer because you don't know how do you

(28:32):
get someone who's in his head out, you know. And
I've done stories on this where I asked players about this,
and some players said, I eat a tub of ice cream.
Some sayers said I walked, I go on a walk
with the dog. Sometimes say I watched a ton of
videos some previous that I watched no video, you know, like,
you know, how you get out of this is as
much of a mental and and a vibe thing as

(28:56):
it is a mechanical thing. So I think for him,
you know, the choice is do I shut it down
and try not to swing at anything and find my
zone again that way, or do I decide, Okay, even
if I strike out, I'm just going to be super
aggressive in the zone. I'm gonna find the zone by
targeting someplace in the zone and just swing it everything

(29:16):
that I think that's close to that, and I kind
of think that's I think that what you need to do.
He needs become aggressive, aggressive in the zone.

Speaker 1 (29:23):
That's great insight. I love that, you know, thank you
tell us about the Rates and Barrels podcast, which you
got up there, even if you have to speak for
three and a half hours straight, sir.

Speaker 7 (29:33):
Well, today we did a fun thing where we did
playoff tiers for playoff rotations. It's an interesting thing when
you go to the playoffs you get down to like
three starters. It's like you kind of think of your
playoff rotation as three maybe four starters.

Speaker 9 (29:46):
So that's what we did.

Speaker 7 (29:47):
We we ranked all of the We tiered all of
the the playoff. The team's headed like that have good
playoff odds. We tiered them Mariners of course, Tier one,
Tier one. I don't know if they're top three though,
the the Phillies, Dodgers, and Brewers, I mean, Miserowskis is nutty,
but they were right behind that top three.

Speaker 1 (30:06):
Love it great stuff, Ras and Beryls. Go subscribe right now.
Check out the Athletic emos got stuff up there as well.

Speaker 1 (30:38):
All right, welcome back in wrapping up our number one
big thanks to you know, so there's good stuff from him.
I just real quick, I think the note on on
Taylor Ward. I had not heard that that encourages me. Yeah,
if you miss what he said, because everyone's like, where
has the power gone? Right? And he got hit by
a pitch earlier in the year and it really was
affecting him. And the metrics now say that these coming around

(31:00):
on that in that regard, yep, which is good. The
other stuff with cal Rawley I thought was really interesting.

Speaker 2 (31:05):
Yeah. It's almost like because there's two different cases about
how injuries can affect your approach, because in Taylor Ward's
case it improved his approach because he's got more walks,
and in cal Rawley's case, it has ruined his approach.

Speaker 1 (31:15):
His approaches this, yeah, I think the encouraging thing with
cal is swing speed and all that is fine. It's
just his approach is awful and he's like letting things
go by that he didn't let I thought, this is
a very simple thing. This is what's weird. I'm sure
this has been talked about right by. How whoever your
hitting coaches this week, like be more aggressive and maybe

(31:36):
it has been.

Speaker 2 (31:37):
He just can't get that. It just it's it's not clicking.

Speaker 1 (31:40):
It's it's not translating, right, it's not getting there. But yeah,
I don't know. We'll see, all right, we come back.
We got a lot coming up in the next two hours.
We'll reset that. The poll question should be about done
right pole question. Yeah, we'll be finished at the top

(32:34):
is correct, sir. They have had seven straight losses across
all competitions. A low point really for this franchise. Storm
loves to the New York Liberty ninety two eighty six.
Speaking of low points, there six and twenty seven on
the season. But frankly they don't care. They're thinking about Juju.

What do you got? What do you got?

Speaker 2 (33:57):
And nothing much has changed the last hour but about
the same you're looking at, you know, the seventy five
seventy six range for you know, just get in?

Speaker 1 (34:07):
Question was MS fans, how much do you care about
making the playoffs? And twenty twenty six just get in?
Can still make it earn of the World Series? Yeah?
Three options, don't care, this team isn't going anywhere, but
still want to be in the dance and three rather,
this team missed the playoffs and I have a better
chance for sweeping changes. And as you said, just get
in seventy four percent yep, about twenty five percent, twenty
six percent say don't care rather miss the plass the

(34:28):
I would put don't care or rooting against them in
the same category. So it's about twenty six percent. Which
is is it higher or lower than you thought that?

Speaker 2 (34:36):
I think it's a little bit higher because again, I
think most most people, if you offered them a chance
to go to the playoffs, that they should slash.

Speaker 1 (34:44):
Would We brought this up because yesterday there was after
the loss in the first game of the series against Detroit,
there was just this this anger in this town, and
there has been that anger in this town for this
team all year, to the point we were asking ourselves,
are are they just? Are are people rooting against them?

Speaker 4 (35:03):
Right?

Speaker 1 (35:03):
Like fans rooting against them? You know? I use I've
got a group of guys that I play golf with
every Wednesday, and afterwards we convene after it's a nine
hole post work league every Wednesday, and after that we
convene and solve the world's problems in the bar there
at the course. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (35:24):
Right, it's for all problems are solved.

Speaker 1 (35:25):
And I kind of use that as my They're kind
of my canaries in the cage. It's always interesting to
see what you know in their rage age is age
and rage age range. Sorry, age range is probably like
anywhere from thirty five to early sixties.

Speaker 2 (35:44):
Okay, and got a nice demographic.

Speaker 1 (35:48):
There, pretty good. Yeah, kind of basically what our radio
station probably is. In a large sense, there is both
apathy and anger towards the baseball team. And then yesterday
was interesting because there was this. It was the merits
were playing and people like just went out through zero
zero whatever they gonna lose. I mean, guy, one guy

(36:08):
has the ability to I'm not gonna throw him out there.
And some there are ways to make wages wagers on
sports outside of the tribal casinos. I don't encourage. I
would encourage you go to Snowclamba casino. Myself, like, hey,
what should I do? Zero zero? On the fourth thing?
I said home, Brian will Man, They're gonna be fine, right,
I was right.

Speaker 2 (36:25):
You have been rather bullish on this team all your life.

Speaker 1 (36:28):
I just think that there's this this I understand because
they haven't reached expectations. And then there's here's this, This
is a weird thing as we sit here on August
the sixth. Do we really think on August sixth, the
ninth place team in the American League could win the
World Series?

Speaker 2 (36:44):
Yeah, because they're not the ninth best team in the
American League. I think they're in the top five.

Speaker 1 (36:48):
That's the thing they've underachieved all year. And the beautiful
thing with baseball is that in baseball you can the
season so long. One good two or three week stretch
can turn things around rather quickly, right one way or
the other, good or bad. So yeah, I've been fairly
bullsh but just last night, like it was like, I

(37:11):
don't know, Marrors were not even a conversation piece. It's
all about hard knocks, like all about hard really. I'm
surprised by that. And then and then I'm looking through
social media. Is an interesting world now, right, it is?
But when we post stuff on Instagram, for example, or

(37:33):
on the TikTok, you're on that.

Speaker 2 (37:37):
Now, I'm on the TikTok, he's on the talk.

Speaker 1 (37:41):
I'm on the TikTok. I don't want to be, but
I am. Anyway, I'm just looking at things that I've posted.
I posted a thing on Monday. Now, I don't have
followers on Instagram because frankly, I don't have breasts. And
that's how it works. Like if you have breasts, you
get followers. If you don't have breasts, you don't get followers. Okay,
am I wrong?

Speaker 2 (38:01):
I mean how the world has come to But yeah, you're.

Speaker 1 (38:03):
Am I wrong. It's a visual medium. Instagram is visual medium.

Speaker 2 (38:07):
It's a good point.

Speaker 1 (38:08):
People don't want to look at me, but they want
to look at Bress meansing a nice term for it.
But you know what I'm saying.

Speaker 2 (38:14):
Of course.

Speaker 1 (38:16):
I posted a thing on Monday of Drew Locke, Cooper Cup,
Sam Darnold just like quick workout. Hey, by the way,
you know Hard Knock's coming up. But the Monday at
Sea Extray Camp, it's a thirty second video of Cup
running at you. Man, that could be a news photographer.
It was damn good as well shot. You can say that.
Two and twenty one thousand views. Wow. The one we

(38:37):
posted just like this morning on bud Clark. All right,
I guess late last night, but I posted it late
last night. Eleven thousand on TikTok no. That's on that's
on the ground. That's on the ground, the ground. I
like anything Mariner related that I've posted ever, maybe a
couple thousand.

Speaker 2 (38:57):
It's weird.

Speaker 1 (38:59):
And I was talking talking to somebody else in local
media who does social media for another outlet in town,
and we were talking about this and they said, yeah,
you know, anything that we do this's Mariner related, just
doesn't get much Huskies, not much cracking, not much anything
Seahawk related blows up. It's just so you're fighting an
uphill battle if you're the baseball team. Yeah, and then

(39:22):
on top of that, you're fighting a perception battle. We
talked about this in the first hour four nine four
five one. By the way to come to toutch text
line four nine four five one. I think the perception
battles are really interesting dynamic right now. The thought going
in the season, you're going to be so good, and
the high expectations, and they haven't lived up to those.
But as we're always told by baseball Guy, it's a

(39:44):
long season. And yes, the games in April, I'm the
king of this April, May, June, those games matter as
much as the games in August and September. Here's the thing,
they haven't lived up to their expectations, and they've pissed
off this entire city and people are at them. Unless
they're going there to watch a Jimothy card or whatever
the hell they're doing, they're mad at the baseball. Like

(40:04):
the sports fan. Someone listening to this station and this show.
They're a sports fan, They're a Maritger fan. They want
the team to They don't care as much about Jimothy
or any of that. They care about the team winning. Well.
The reality is they've disappointed us this year. They have
not lived up to those high, lofty expectations and the
really the momentum they had thought they had built on

(40:27):
from the end of last season. The beautiful thing with
baseball is there's a ton of time left for that.
They didn't put themselves in a position where they're out
of it, Like that's the key, Like you could be
in a position right now. Mets. Mets are a great
example of that. The Mets are twelve games out of
a wildcard spot. They're done, they're toast. The Giants are

(40:47):
thirteen games out.

Speaker 2 (40:48):
Sold at the deadline, Yeah.

Speaker 1 (40:50):
Giants, Mets, they're out of it. I mean they're they're
completely out of it. The Angels thirteen out, Athletics, thirteen out,
there's a wildcard, Royals nine out, everybody else besides really
the Royals, Athletics, Angels, Mets, Giants, Rockies. Twenty four of
thirty teams are within five games of a wild card

(41:12):
spot or a playoff spot, and Seattle's one of those. Yeah,
so they're right in the mix. And the argument you
could make, and we have this with Josh in the
other day, not even argument. As Joe pointed out, he
thinks they have the at worst, what two or three
second or third best team in the American League, Yet
this town's angry at them. This town's cares more about

(41:34):
hard knocks than they do about the Dan Mariners. Unless
there's a Jimithe Knight, then it's a whole different world
than get Jamay.

Speaker 2 (41:40):
Is interesting because I do feel like anything what you
said about the response on social media, I don't think
it matches the response we get on our radio station
on the text line and stuff like that, because anytime
we bring up a Mariner's topic, it feels like just
to explode.

Speaker 1 (41:56):
But Anders because they're mad. They're mad, I know. And
it's one thing like the Seahawks can do almost no wrong,
right now rightfully, So like they won the Super Bowl. Yeah,
and they've won two of those in the last what
fourteen years? So they won a super Bowl. These guys

(42:18):
have not done anything in terms of winning. And I
think I'll use a word here, and maybe this is accurate,
at least it is for me. I think people's patience
has just worn thin. They're just worn out. And then
instead of seeing a team achieve what they hoped or
reached the lofty expectations, or give us a year in

(42:40):
which they've just I mean, just think about if they
were humming along like the Rays of the Yankees this year,
or even having a year like the Chicago White Sox. Yeah,
they're only five games above five hundred, but they've been
in that position relatively speaking all season.

Speaker 2 (42:54):
How much would the Mariners killed to have that position
right now?

Speaker 1 (42:57):
Where if they were five games above five hundred and
basically just winning two of every three games exactly, you
would be you'd be thrilled.

Speaker 2 (43:04):
Yes, everyone would be so hyped about this team right now.

Speaker 1 (43:07):
But that's not the case. No, that's not the case.
And instead, I think at times we look for reasons
to be angry with the baseball team and the problem
with that, Anders, I believe you tell me if I'm
way off base or if I'm onto something here. I
think in that case or I think with the case
of the Mariners, it's easy to become angry at them.

(43:27):
They give us too many reasons to be angry at
them totally. And that's and that's where we are right now,
right and that's that's that's where we are. I mean,
they're they're there. We just talked about winning series. They're fifteen,
nineteen and two in series this year. So you know,
tough one tonight, Let's go win the next two and
win a series. That happened against the Twins, it can

(43:49):
happen today against the Detroit Tigers. Tough one tonight. Yes, Dan,
it was, Oh, we won't hear that today. Tough one tonight.
But they there are four games under five hundred in
terms of four series under five hundred terms of wins,
so that there, in some ways, they're kind of lucky
to be where they are, very much because the American
League sucks, American West sucks. Pillow fight baby. The specific

(44:10):
division of the NHL is what it is. Along the way,
all right, we'll transition talking little Seahawks Football. We got
Bud Clark joined us yesterday on the show. He's the Seahawks'
second round draft pick, and we'll hear from him in
the next segment. Bud Clark was drafted out of TCU.
Is an interesting story. He had a child in college,
was there all. Well, he's actually there for six years,

(44:33):
I think because there's a COVID year mixedt in and
injury MiG mixed in as well. So he's twenty four.
He's a little bit of an older rookie as well.
He's a twenty four year old, has been getting a
lot of play, a lot of run with the first team,
various spots, love gets a maintenance day, he's in Okada,
he's in Emon Warrior out. He's got a little bit
of work in the box in that situation, not a ton.

(44:56):
So he's been there. But man, when he was drafted
back in late April and we listened to this dude talk,
Everyone's like, Wow, this guy's special, this guy something else.
So I've been looking forward to having a conversation with
Bud Clark's second round pick out of TCU with safety
for the Seahawks. He'll talk about hard knocks. He'll talk
about his journey to get to the NFL, which frankly

(45:17):
is a It's a pretty good one. It's a pretty
interesting one along the way because he had to grind,
and he had to overcome, and he had to get
through some things that most players in college football don't
have to do. You'll hear his story and hear from
one of the happiest, most gregarious guys. You need to
pick me up. Bud Clark is coming up next.

Speaker 6 (45:39):
Now back to Ian Furness on your Home for the Huskies,

So stay tuned for that was Softy Tomorrow, known for

But we'll back there tomorrow. We've had some fun interviews,
I know, just our show. We've really and I think
we've really had We've done well. We've had some really
good interviews, really good guys. Tory Hort was sensational. Yep.

(47:00):
Mike McDonald obviously coming on was great. Having him on
that was always good. What's that, tyle Cotta? You mean
you mean Sean Sean McVay tyle Cotta, Yeah, I should
ask him about Hey, can you give us the insight there,
coach on what's going on with here? Dol Yeah, the yeah, yeah.
De Anthony Bell was a really fun interview. Like we've
had some good stories good interviews along the way. I

(47:21):
don't know if any of them as good as our guy,
Bud Clark, second round pick TCU. We had him on yesterday.
He joined us. We're starting to get to be able
to get the rookies on the air. I heard both
Stevens on the show with Somebody, A J. Barney interview
yesterday with Soft He was really good too. Uh but yeah,
you're not going to top what we had yesterday and
early in the show, right off the top, So we
thought we'd give it to you again. Bud Clark, the

(47:41):
second round pick, the safety for the Seahawks, and he
joined us yesterday. Ton of fun to talk to him. Uh,
here is Bud Clark. Bud Clark joins a second round
pick TCU. He's a horn frog, right, yes, sir, this guy.
I'm gonna tell you right now, you every guy want,
every media guy wants to talk to you. And that
is because back on draft day we're all sitting up,

(48:03):
we're all up in the you know, the defensive meeting room.
You guys are that big, that's what we are.

Speaker 5 (48:07):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (48:07):
So when you're on that speaker phone and doing all that,
that's where all us media knuckleheads are and you come
on and I've been doing this for a long time.
I think this is It was like the twentieth draft
I've covered and there's a lot of guys like old,
like me, and everyone's like, man, this guy's this guy's it.
He's fun.

Speaker 5 (48:25):
I appreciate that.

Speaker 1 (48:26):
What tell me about this? Like you? You just have
this infectious personality. Where does that come from?

Speaker 10 (48:32):
I get it from my mom, you know, she like everyone,
and we woke up. She was like, you know, trying
to put a smile on someone's face. You never know
how it could change him.

Speaker 1 (48:39):
I love that. And your father, so I assume you
do the same.

Speaker 10 (48:41):
Oh yes, sir, yes, sir, all the time. He's the
same way. Ball the energy.

Speaker 1 (48:47):
All right, let's get to it, but cluck. First of all,
this is the talk of the town today on our
radio station here on Sports Radio KJR, all across the town.
Did you watch Hard Knocks last night?

Speaker 5 (48:56):
I actually did.

Speaker 1 (48:58):
Okay, let's get a rid you from a player. What'd
you think?

Speaker 5 (49:01):
Actually?

Speaker 10 (49:02):
I feel like it captured a lot. It showed a
lot that was going on. I didn't like that it
was showing offense kicking out.

Speaker 1 (49:07):
But the whole time.

Speaker 10 (49:09):
But you know, you know, they get the day as
we get ours, you know, so I feel like it
was well rounded for sure.

Speaker 1 (49:14):
I bet the coach didn't like that either, to being
the defensive head coach, right, he.

Speaker 5 (49:17):
Didn't at all.

Speaker 1 (49:18):
I like that at all. Oh my gosh. I thought,
here's the thing. It's you know, for for so many
people of fans that have been coming out here, for
us that have kind of been behind the scenes here
in the media. That was cool because we saw places
we never see the offices for Schneider and McDonald, you know,
you hear the stuff in the in the in the
huddles and all those things. I saw that portrayed Mike
McDonald really well. In this sense he's kind of a nerd,

(49:41):
but I mean that in a good way. Would you agree?
How how do you think Mike was portrayed?

Speaker 10 (49:46):
I actually love how they portray coach Mike because you know,
he is weird, but he's very energetic. He's a very
great person. So like it showed everything about him. You know,
he was awkward, but he's like one of the most
of great people to be around.

Speaker 1 (50:00):
One of the today's athletes different than ten fifteen twenty
years ago, and I think we saw that here before
your time with Pete Carroll and Pete Pete did his
things his way. Let guys do their own thing athletes,
and everything evolves over the years, and maybe it just
wasn't working. They made the move. They bring Mike in,
and Mike seems to have this ability to really relate
to today's athlete. How would you describe who and what

(50:22):
he is as a coach to you? Just as a relation,
not just as a player, but just overall relationship.

Speaker 5 (50:26):
I feel like, you know, I look at him more
of a really like a role.

Speaker 10 (50:29):
Model, because you know, he's like he's like you say,
you know, he says he's awkward, but I feel like
he takes that on like you know, it takes it
on like head on, and everything that he does he
does it with passion. So it passes off right to us,
you know, because I'm a little weird.

Speaker 5 (50:40):
I love it. You know, people don't know yet, but
I'm very I'm very rid.

Speaker 1 (50:44):
How are you weird?

Speaker 5 (50:45):
Just different things I like to you know, you have
to see that I can't.

Speaker 1 (50:48):
Okay, so over the next few years, you know what
it is? Okay, all right, I'm into it. I thought
what was with him though, too, is that when he
the part where he had to talk to Brady Russell. Yeah,
and there's a I mean, you're gonna have training fights.
Those are things going to happen, and every coach channels
it differently. It is funny when Pete was here. Pete
liked it at first, and then after that there were
no fights for like three years. There's a couple of
bad incidents. Mike doesn't seem to like it. It's a

(51:10):
waste of time. But how we handle Brady Russell like
his way to discipline is that how it is behind
the scenes. He's very He's not a yeller, he's not
a screamer. I don't think right how that's do players appreciate.

Speaker 5 (51:23):
That very much?

Speaker 10 (51:24):
So because I feel like, you know, he talks to
you like you were grown man at the end of
the day. But also you know he has to understand
it discipline behind what was going on, So I feel like,
you know, he handles it pretty will for sure.

Speaker 1 (51:34):
Bud Clark is with a Seahawks second round draft pick.
He's a safety. We'll talk about how he's doing a
practice because he's been elevated he's up with the ones
right now. We expect that with a second round pick.
You stayed at TCU your entire time, and there's a
lot of stuff that happened there, including the birth of
the child, yeah, which is awesome. One of the things
we talked about you about you with you on draft
day is just that that you stayed there the whole time.

(51:55):
Jadarian Price did the exact same thing at Notre Dame.
He wasn't even starting. You were a starter captain everything else,
but that was something they really liked. Walk me through TCU.
Why did you stay there? Because I'm sure you had
opportunities to go other places in bigger schools, and whether
big time SEC schools, Big ten or whatever it is,
why'd you stay there?

Speaker 10 (52:11):
I feel like with TCU even when I first started,
because I started under Gary Patterson. You know, he made
it feel like a home for me, you know, just
like here. But you know, the defense was amazing. He
was a great defensive head coach. So you know, when
I first started off, I knew that's where I wanted
to be. Wasn't too far from home, wasn't too close.
So then you know, when Gary ended up leaving, I
got to I got to feel for coach coach Diykes.

(52:32):
You know, I was like, man, because I had a
lot going on at the time. I was like, man,
I don't know if I have the transfer, you know, this,
this and that. But then I actually talked to coach Diykes.
He told me that he wanted me there, you know,
to be a leader for his team. So I made
sure I stayed there because I knew that I wanted
to be somewhere that I started here, so I wanted
to finish.

Speaker 2 (52:46):
Here for sure.

Speaker 1 (52:47):
Bud Clark with me, Bud, you married with a child
in college, sir? How when that happened? What goes through
your mind? Like, Wow, can I still play football? How
am I going to support? Like all those things? That's
a lot. I mean for me as an old adult,
it was hard having young kids. How challenging was that?
What were the biggest challenges you faced with a young
child in college?

Speaker 10 (53:07):
You know, so I was twenty years old when we
first had him. You know, it was a lot being
away from my family because you know, I put a
lot on my on my fiance at the time, you know,
so it was a lot for her and I feel
like it weighed on me, and then it got to
a point where, you know, I felt like I had
I had to play football because this is the way
to get to take care of my family.

Speaker 8 (53:24):
You know.

Speaker 5 (53:25):
So we and my fiance we end up having a talk.
We talked about everything.

Speaker 10 (53:29):
You know, let her know this, sometimes it's gonna be
very time consuming that you know, with football. So she
understood that and she took on a role being a
great mother. And you know, I'm being a great football
player and being a great father.

Speaker 5 (53:39):
Also.

Speaker 1 (53:40):
Do you think it motivated you as far as a
football player saying I'm gonna I'm going to reach a
height that I need to for my family. I'm gonna
achieve something. I'm gonna get the NFL dream is there
for every college football player. For you, was a little
bit different, a little bit more motivating because of having.

Speaker 10 (53:54):
A child, very much so because I feel like I'm
trying to pay the way, you know, just whether that
be you know, for him to play football, whether that
be for sports. Maybe he can be a restaurant, you know,
someone that owns a restaurant or something. I want you
to be the best at what you can, whatever you do,
that's awesome.

Speaker 1 (54:08):
Are they with you right now?

Speaker 5 (54:09):
Oh they are they coming up here today?

Speaker 1 (54:11):
They are? How Jackedory? It's a while right it has
I'm so happy they out here. Oh my goodness, Bud
Clark is with us. It's a great story. Let's talk football.
Drafted you in the second round to the Super Bowl champions.
What went through your mind when you got picked by
these guys and what was the first thing you thought
of when you hear about Seattle?

Speaker 5 (54:28):
I looked up.

Speaker 10 (54:29):
You know, I've been looking up to Richard Sherman since
as a child, So being able to come here was
an absolute blessing. You know, like Saints was my favorite
team growing up because I'm from Louisiana. But uh, just
just everything that they had, the style here, the players,
the leadership, the everything. Honestly, you know, it was a
blessing to see that they call my phone.

Speaker 1 (54:46):
Have you talked to Sherman any of you guys that played
in that last Super Bowl team?

Speaker 5 (54:50):
I did talk to missus Sherman.

Speaker 1 (54:52):
What did he tell you?

Speaker 10 (54:53):
You know, he was just giving me tips on being
a football player, being a baller, being a father also,
so you know, I was listening to him and I.

Speaker 5 (54:59):
Rolled with it.

Speaker 1 (55:00):
Nobody talks better than him.

Speaker 5 (55:01):
Oh no, no, no way.

Speaker 1 (55:02):
Are you gonna be right there?

Speaker 5 (55:03):
Oh?

Speaker 1 (55:03):
Yeah, who talks more? You and Witherspoon?

Speaker 10 (55:06):
H right now, all right now, I say Spoon, but uh,
I'm right on his trails though.

Speaker 1 (55:12):
It's gotta be part of the game of a dB,
doesn't it. Yeah, Like you gotta have a little chatter
going on. You're going against some elite guys on that offense.
And we saw that in Hard Knocks last Like you said,
those guys are that one. And it's funny because there's
like three or four practices that they showed makes it
look like one. Yeah, you can see sometimes the fans
are here. Sometimes they weren't all that. But you're going

(55:32):
against the offensive player of the year in the NFL.
In JSN Cooper Cup, Tory Horton go through the list
of these guys. What's been the biggest challenge and who've
you learned the most of going against?

Speaker 11 (55:43):
So?

Speaker 10 (55:43):
Uh, you know, I got to go against mister a
couple a couple of times, you know, so uh, just
being against him, he showed me you know, uh, you
know the difference in being against a veteran or receiver
and a rookie receiver, So it was a lot of
things that I got to learn from. He was showing
me how he attacked me in different ways that he
saw from a db'spective perspective, even though he's a receiver. So, uh,
I got to learn a lot from him for sure.

Speaker 1 (56:03):
Just we saw in the video out on the in
the show last night, what we've all known about him.
He's like a coach on the field, but also a
coach off the field. He's sitting in the quarterback room,
he's sitting in McDonald's office, he gives what do you
think of that little piece where he says to Mike McDonald,
get whatever he's doing. He says something and it clicks
with McDonald, the head coach. He's like, man, how did
I not see that? How did I not see that?

(56:25):
But that's is that cup?

Speaker 5 (56:26):
Yeah?

Speaker 10 (56:26):
I feel like it speaks for our team too, though,
you know, cause like some coaches would wouldn't be able
to take that will, but uh, Mike actually took it
and listened to what he had going on, So I
feel like it was perfect.

Speaker 1 (56:36):
He's that but that that how invaluable does it to
have a guy like that on the field?

Speaker 5 (56:40):
Absolutely amazing. He's like a field general.

Speaker 1 (56:41):
Yeah awesome. All right, now you're you're all over the place.
Uh you come in here, Julian Love Tyle Katta had
that thing locked down last year. Nicki Minuari as well.
Nick's hurt. You're battling with tie. You're you're replacing love
at times. Where where do you fit in this defense?
Do you think? And you're gonna tell me wherever they
tell me? I know that you're You're better than that.
You're better than that. Don't give you that answer. You're
better than that. Where do you fit?

Speaker 5 (57:03):
Honestly?

Speaker 10 (57:04):
You know, I like I have a right you're gonna do.
I'm trying to fit wherever my team fit, you know,
needed me to be great. You know, like wherever they
want me to need me to be great, I'll try
to be there for sure.

Speaker 1 (57:14):
Where do you feel most comfortable? Is it that the
line of scrimmage?

Speaker 3 (57:17):
Is it deep?

Speaker 1 (57:17):
Is it free? Strong? Where do you feel most comfortable?
Because you've got great hands? You had a lot of picks?

Speaker 10 (57:22):
Yeah, so right now I would say, like feel safety
and really down in a box?

Speaker 5 (57:27):
Really? So really is in fifty fifty? I can play both?

Speaker 1 (57:30):
What have you learned before I let you go Bud
Bud Clark with me? What have you learned about the NFL? Like,
what has been the biggest thing that's maybe surprised you?
Is it speed? Is it strength? Is it just? Is
it the verbiage? What's the biggest challenge from And I'll
just use this as a comparison. Freshman year TCU. Come
out of high school in Louisiana and you go to
TCU big time program. Being a freshman, probably it's like,

(57:51):
whoa man, I'm seventeen, eighteen years old, here I am.
What about that compared to now being a twenty something,
your twenty four year old kid coming in to an NFL.
How different isn't we're the biggest changes?

Speaker 5 (58:00):
I would say pretty much.

Speaker 10 (58:01):
You know, everyone's here for a reason, you know, Like
I feel like in college, you know, sometimes you run
into a couple of guys that that not not so,
wouldn't fit in that agenda, you know, so, But I
feel like I hear you, nigga, everybody everybody's here for.

Speaker 1 (58:14):
He's on the same page. You're here for the same reason.
No one's here just to get scholarship money or because
mom and dad wanted to be.

Speaker 10 (58:19):
Yeah, you're here for a reason, whether you can think, play,
you know, ball, whatever.

Speaker 1 (58:23):
It is final thing for you. Look out here, fans
are back here today. This is a unique setting. You're
on the lake. I thought one of the cool things
just last night too, was the shots of the lake
in the city and all of that. And you're from
the South. It's not humid here. It's a little smoky.
You can't really smell it, but it's a little smoky
and stuff. What's it like with these guys here with
the fans here watching a practice, a football practice, because

(58:44):
that's it's a grind, man, ain't no fun. What's it
like with these guys?

Speaker 10 (58:47):
I feel like they bringing the energy, so you know
all it does. We feed off of that energy, like
you know with the twelve is one. So I feel like, uh,
just being there, I'm ready to get into lumin Stadium.

Speaker 1 (58:56):
Yeah, see what Saturday Saturday, you guys be there for
the fan fest and then a week from Saturday we
go kick some butt against the Dallas Cowboys. Yes a
star that'd be kind of fun.

Speaker 5 (59:07):
Yeah, it's gonna be pretty fun for sure.

Speaker 1 (59:09):
Hey, listen, it's a great story. Uh, you're a ton
of fun. Everyone's excited to have you here in Seattle.
I hope you're feeling that same excitement from all the fans.
I'm sure your wife and and you know how old
is your son three? Three? What's his name?

Speaker 5 (59:20):
Kenzo?

Speaker 1 (59:20):
Kenzo?

Speaker 5 (59:21):
Yes, sir, I like that.

Speaker 1 (59:22):
That's a good day. I like that. So Kenzo and
your wife are coming here, They're gonna feel the love too.
We're all feeling it. But have you been miked up yet?

Speaker 5 (59:29):
I have?

Speaker 1 (59:30):
I have.

Speaker 5 (59:30):
I loved it every every every second day.

Speaker 1 (59:33):
So maybe episode two might be a little Bud Clark
in there. Yes there, yes, sir, we hope so like that.
Who'd you talk to Mac to try to.

Speaker 5 (59:41):
Talk a little bit of little Cody White? Area nowaday?

Speaker 1 (59:44):
Yeah, so you and Cody White going at it? Nothing bad,
nothing like, you know, just friendly competition. Okay, all right,
all right, there you go. That is Bud Clark who
joined us yesterday. Just a fun, fun guy to talk to, man,
Just full of energy, filled with ife. Man. I'm just
a end up being a fan of this guy, and
we were fans of him the draft night, every one

(01:00:05):
of us in the media room that night when he
called in on the on the phone on the speakerphone
was like, Wow, this guy's this guy is different. He's different.
Hopefully he can play. If he could play as well
as he can talk and and so forth, he'll be
a Hall of Famer all the way around. Yeah, all right,
I do think he did mention the uh kicks a button.
He's fired up. He's fired up for the game against

(01:00:25):
the Dallas Cowboys, just like Softie is. Yes, all week
from Saturday. Yeah, Softie loves the preseason. They've got their
fan fest on Saturday at Loomin Field, which is just
for those who it's not a scrimmage, right all right.
So they had because Pete used to have what he
called the mock Game for years and they would do it,

(01:00:48):
and you know, we were talking about it with Corbyn yesterday.
You know the one year I think it was right
out of COVID. God, it was right out of COVID,
right before COVID anyway, right around that time they had
the one year they had it out at pop Kini,
which is awesome and just a cool atmosphere. But you're
busting players in who are already dressed from renting to

(01:01:08):
baffle it. Logistically, it just didn't it worked for the
fans probably kind of a cool thing. Didn't really work
for anybody else, like for the sex and I felt
bad for like ek' they're equipment guy and everybody else.

Speaker 2 (01:01:21):
It's a logistical nightmare.

Speaker 1 (01:01:22):
Yeah, So now they go back and every year since
and before they do it, they do the things at
the at the stadium. But it's just kind of evolved
now into a practice, right, and that's what it is.
So you know, I think if you were if it
was me and I wanted to go see a practice.
Now you're not as close obviously at lumin as you
would be at Renton, but it's a far more enjoyable experience.

(01:01:43):
I think you're not taking the bus, the school bus
from Renton, and you're not just close, so it'll be
kind of fun on Saturday. You can see some things
as well. And they got a lot to work on still.
They just signed a full back today because and I
don't like that. I'll be honest with you. I don't
like that at all. That that screams to me. Unfortunately.
The Robbie Oots is a big concern we talked about
with Corbyn. Gregg's talked about it quite a bit on

(01:02:04):
his show, too. The situation with Ootz just sounds really bad.
Like it just sounds really bad. Doesn't sound at all
like it's a guy that's goun be coming back anytime soon,
if at all. I think on the table has to
be the concern that Oots doesn't play again, right, and
that would be horrific.

Speaker 5 (01:02:21):
Man.

Speaker 1 (01:02:22):
And when they go out and sign a fullback as
they did today off the street, two things come to mind.
A the Ootz health I just discussed, but B the
reason they're doing that is the fullback is going to
be a part of this offense. And Brady Russell. I
think Bratty Russell for Robbie Ootz there probably won't be much.

(01:02:44):
It's not much of a drop off. I mean, Oots
maybe as a higher upside Russell is what he is,
but and Russell's kind of more versatilely can play that
tight end position. But there's so many tight ends. So A. J.
Barner had a great discussion with that yesterday. But I
think that that's a there's a pretty big red flag
out there for Robby youats because they were using and
watching him early in camp before he got dinged up,
and I think he got dinged up on the first

(01:03:05):
day of full pads, and he was his usage was heavy,
very heavy for the Seahawks, and that's that's not the case. Now,
all right, let's do this, let's take a quick break,
we'll come back. I got something good for you today.
All right, we got something good in a time that
frankly ain't so good in our area. So we'll get
to that. Talking to Jamie Vinnick from kook Fan Top

(01:03:27):
of the Hour at two o'clock today, all nine three
point three KTERFM.

Speaker 6 (01:03:34):
Now back Dean Furness on your home for the Huskies
Cracking and the Twelfth Man, brought to you by Seattle's
closest snow call Me Casino and Hotel on Sports Radio
ninety three point three kJ r FM.

Speaker 1 (01:03:53):
Alrighty, then we got all something good today on a
and it's not good because it had to happen that
that part isn't good. But the Spokane fires has been devastating.
I saw number today. They've talked about over a thousand
structures have been destroyed, burnt to the ground. Out of those,
somewhere between six hundred to seven hundred maybe our single

(01:04:16):
family homes. Just I can't even fathom that losing everything
just awful. And it was sept set by an arsonist.
We can say it was alleged arsenist. It was set
by an arsenist. Okay, yes, I don't know. I'm not
beholding to those same rules. And the coming back and

(01:04:39):
the fires are still underway. That's part, that's the hard part.
But coming back from that is just it's an impossible,
impossible thing. In the long term. FEMA and the government
will help out a little bit. Insurance will help out
to a point, but every little bit helps are Listen,
you guys know I'm a beer dude. You guys don't

(01:05:00):
want to beer guy. I love beer, probably to a fault.
I don't think there's a more generous group in our
state than the beer community. The brewers, the local small
smaller craft brewers. Let me start with Stoop Brewing make
great beer. Vallard, Ken Moore, c Tach Capitol Hill. They

(01:05:24):
just they make great beer. Also, they spearheaded an effort
to get donations of non perishable food, can goods, hygiene products,
and pet food. I dropped off at breweries and other locations,
tap houses and so forth across the area over the
course of three or four days. Fifteen thousand pounds they collected.
It ended yesterday, So just a huge shout out to

(01:05:46):
Stoop Brewing. I mean they were partnering with, you know,
competing breweries like Lucky Envelope and Rooftop and No Boat,
No Boats Great up in so Qualmy, and they paired
up with all the folks and gathered fifteen thousand pounds
worth of goods to bring over to Spokane. So to
Stoop and Holy Mountain and everyone else involved. I mean,

(01:06:09):
I'm looking through here, it's almost every brewery in Seattle.
Tip of the cap, cheers to you big thanks to Stoop.
Number two. My friends at Georgetown Brewing they kind of pivoted.
They had hopefully Greg Bell's not listening, they had a
beer called short Spine but Divine Ipa.

Speaker 2 (01:06:30):
Oh I love that. I love that.

Speaker 1 (01:06:32):
Come on, hopefully Greg's not listening. It was It was
born and bred just like our favorite furry friend Crispin Klean,
with notes of sweet lime, melon and pine. What they've
done is they've been they This was really cool. They
basically are donating one hundred percent of the proceeds moving
forward from that beer donated to the Colville Confederate Tribe

(01:06:55):
Cedar Fund for the fire up there as well. They
also we're a drop off point for what's Stoop Brewing
and Holy Mountain Brewing. I should mention Holy Holy Mountain
Brewing was a big part of the collaboration, was Stooped
to get those goods. So Georgetown, Stoop, Holy.

Speaker 2 (01:07:11):
Mountain, well done.

Speaker 1 (01:07:14):
Thank you. It's every little bit helps. And you know,
I've been seeing the praises of Georgetown forever because the
beer is great, but more importantly, the people are better.
And you know, Benny Roger, the owners, Matt Dave, Peter, Jack,
Crystal Ingrid, the whole group. Man, they are just unbelievable people,

(01:07:36):
and they're so generous. What they do for Children's Hospital,
Ronald McDonald house, and seemingly anybody who asks in this
community is beyond it's beyond description. But then seeing what
Stoop and Holy Mountain did too, Man, just really thrilled
for those guys. I just it's it's really a cool
community that they're in. Those guys are all competing to

(01:07:57):
sell beers and get tap handles, and yet they all
work together for the common good. And I just thank them.
Speaking of which, Andrews asked me about this earlier, fifteen
days away, fifteen days away from Mayor Ipa tapping day.
Let's go fifteen days away. You ready to rock and roll?

Speaker 2 (01:08:19):
Ready, let's do this.

Speaker 1 (01:08:21):
Mayor IPA fifteen days away, coming up on Friday, August
August twenty first. I'm sorry August twenty first, you'll want
to get it early. Last year sold out in nine days,
fastest had sold out since we had a six day
sellout the first year. But the first year was when
COVID was happened. By the heart of COVID, if you

(01:08:43):
wanted a beer, you had to go buy a beer.
You couldn't go out and drink a beer, and we
sold the growlers out in five or six days that
first year. Last year was nine. It's a limited release.
One hundred percent of the proceeds go to our three charities,
Avery Huffman, DIPG, Jordan Morris Foundation for Type one Diabetes
and Young people with that disease, and also Lensky's Hope.

(01:09:03):
So support local, guys, support local. If you're looking around
for a beer, if you're in a local establishment, I'm
just Georgetown, Stoop, Holy Mountain. You see those names, jump
on top, just jump all over it. The beer is good. Great,

(01:09:24):
the cause is even better. That's are something good for taking.
That's something really good. That's something really good and a
really horrific time. Right now, we'll take a break. We'll
talk a little. College football Fall camp is underway. The
PAC twelve is back, sort of sort of anders yep,
sort of yep. We also welcome all those tuning in

(01:11:39):
One place to go cook Fan coop fan dot com.
Jamie Vinnick, Jamie how are you my man good? Oh,
you know, it's uh, it's a little smoke you over here.
And I'm not gonna say that. I'm I make that
I say that, and I'm thinking, well, you're in eastern Washington.
The first fires in the eastern Washington were at actually
Whitman County. How are things over there right now?

Speaker 4 (01:12:01):
You know, it's actually not that bad in Pullman.

Speaker 11 (01:12:03):
I mean, obviously spoken is a different story, but it
really I was expecting it to be a lot worse
kind of getting out here.

Speaker 4 (01:12:09):
It's just not all that terrible right now.

Speaker 1 (01:12:12):
I saw something just the videos and cruising through the
other day, and I haven't had a chance to talk
to you, and I spoke about it when it happened.
But just a quick thought before we turned to the present.
The passing of one Jim Walden a few weeks back.
Legendary cougar coach on a lot of levels. Obviously, he
had some success on the field. He brought he brought

(01:12:34):
the Apple Cup and Big Games back to Pullman, coached
some terrific players over the years, ended up being just
one of the most entertaining broadcasters ever. He and Bob
rob were just an absolute treat made the games fun,
even if the game itself wasn't fun. Some quick thoughts
on you on the memory of Jim Walden.

Speaker 11 (01:12:52):
Yeah, I mean, obviously he was the coach year long
before I was at Wazoo or alive for that matter.
But you know, I got a chance to know Jim
over the last few years, just you know, talking to
him for stories and then you know, he had me
on his radio show a couple of times.

Speaker 4 (01:13:08):
It's just a guy who just you know, kind of
exuded what it meant to be at Kugan.

Speaker 11 (01:13:13):
He he was so passionate about this university and uh,
you know, always had something you know, comical to say.
I still remember at at Jake Dickerd's press conference and
he immediately asked, uh, what, uh, when the hell we're
gonna see a tight end at Washington State again? And
well and behold they brought him back.

Speaker 4 (01:13:32):
So he always was up for He always had something
funny to say.

Speaker 11 (01:13:36):
Always, uh had a little can provide a little color
into you know, any situation.

Speaker 4 (01:13:41):
So no, it'll be he'll be greatly missed out here.
And I'm very happy that I did get a chance
to get to know Jim over the last few years.

Speaker 1 (01:13:48):
Yeah, I was. I was in school when he was coaching,
and uh, I have I have a couple of great
stories from him. I told him the air when we
passed away, and then later on got to really know
him well. We had him on as a weekly guest
for many years here on KJR. And because he's Jim
uh and he's you know, he's got a little red
ass in him. We had a falling out at one point,
but we got back together and I spent a lot

(01:14:09):
of time on his show, pretty much every week for
the last three or four years, it felt like. And
then also he came on our show on occasion. Just
a fun guy and I'm gonna I'm gonna miss the
I'm gonna miss the calls from from him and his
radio cohorts and Spokane on that Saturday show. Is a
ton of fun. All right, let's move on, Let's let's
get to the present. And uh, Kirby Moore, he's had
a spring practice, you've had press conferences, you've got a

(01:14:32):
chance to be around him a little bit. What are
your impressions of the of the first year head coach,
in the first year ever as a head coach of
Kirby Moore.

Speaker 11 (01:14:41):
You know, I think just kind of the first thing
that stands out is it's almost kind of the the
middle ground at least personality wise, between Jake Dickard and
Jimmy Rodgers. I think it's not quite the raw raw
that Dickard had and you know, kind of the the
overly upbeat and maybe to a point where sometimes it
felt a little forced.

Speaker 4 (01:15:00):
But there's also a personality as.

Speaker 11 (01:15:01):
Opposed to Rogers, who you know, was it was like
watching paint and dry sometimes trying to talk to him,
they're just you weren't gonna get any sort of color,
any sort of personality, and you know, and he would
tell us, oh, you know, I'm not as much of
a hard ass as I come out.

Speaker 4 (01:15:14):
He said that a few times.

Speaker 11 (01:15:15):
But you never were gonna get a whole lot of
you know, uh, personality, color, any sort of that from
from Rogers, And I think Moore is a good mix
where you know, again he's not over the top, but
there there's some some flavor and a little bit of
you know again that that personality to him, and you know,
he's very measured when he talks.

Speaker 4 (01:15:35):
Again, it's not, uh, he's not gonna over exaggerate.

Speaker 11 (01:15:38):
He's not gonna try and uh sell things, you know,
to a point of where it comes off fake. But
you know he's gonna answer, you know, the questions in
a pretty balanced way. And and then you know he's
gonna have praise, he's gonna have criticism.

Speaker 4 (01:15:51):
But I think we just kind of stands out again he's.

Speaker 11 (01:15:53):
Kind of a little bit more neutral and you can
kind of tell maybe some of the coaches he's worked under,
right it.

Speaker 4 (01:15:58):
You know, it sounds a little bit like when you know,
you watch media with Kaitlin de Boor and it was kind.

Speaker 11 (01:16:03):
Of that same thing of just that middle ground and
obviously worked under Tedford, worked under drink with so you
can tell just kind of talking to him, and even
the way he kind of carries himself is that he's
been around some big time college.

Speaker 4 (01:16:15):
Football programs and some big time college football coaches.

Speaker 1 (01:16:19):
Well, one thing we do know about the old the
new Pac ten is much like the old Pack ten.
Not a lot of respect for Washington State. Maybe it's
because of the first year coach or what have you.
I think they're picked fifth in the in the preseason poll.
Whatever that's for whatever it's worth. Would you agree. Are
they a middle of the pack team in this new conference?

Speaker 7 (01:16:37):
Yeah.

Speaker 11 (01:16:38):
So one of the Colorado State writers, for I think
it was the Denver is that he kind of gathered
a bunch of opinions from the media people that cover
each of the pack twelve teams and kind of put together.

Speaker 4 (01:16:48):
A preseason ball like that. I had him third. I
think when you look at Boise.

Speaker 11 (01:16:51):
State and the continuity that that team has, that that's
going to be a really tough team to beat. It's
a team that obviously returns a head coach, returns a quarterback,
you know, has just this you know, seemingly unending stable
of running backs, and then has a lot of experience
on the defensive side as well. I think if you
look at San Diego State, you say the same thing.
That's a team that brought a lot back, especially on offense.

(01:17:12):
I think they've got a chance to be really good.
But I think Washington State can very much be in
that mix of, you know, above the likes of Fresno State,
in Utah State and Texas State, and I think, you know, again,
there's uncertain and I don't necessarily blame people for having,
you know, their their trepidations about Wazoo just was again
so many new faces, another new coaching staff. But I

(01:17:34):
do think that there's maybe more talent than they're given
credits for. Just when you look at some of the
guys they were able to bring in from the portal,
some of the guys they were able to retain. So
you know, I think they absolutely will have a shot
to compete for the top of the packs. Well, I
just you know, when I look at it, I think, Okay,
there's a little bit more continuity at some of these
other places that could make it hard to challenge the boys.

Speaker 4 (01:17:53):
He's in the San Diego is in your one.

Speaker 1 (01:17:54):
All right, Jamie Vini kook fan dot com. Joining us
first year and a first time head coach. That one reason.
The other one would be who's the quarterback? And so
they go into this year. We knew Zevy was gonna
be the guy. We could do a song and dance
all we want last season, I mean, and there was
a song and dance at the start of the year,
as we all know. And then certainty of that position.

(01:18:15):
They've got three guys competing for that spot, Cayden Pinnick,
Julian Duggar and Owen Eshelman handicapped the race and who
and what each of these guys bring.

Speaker 11 (01:18:26):
Yeah, you know, I think one thing that stands out
is they're all fairly athletic. I mean, I think we
saw Dougar last year and what he.

Speaker 4 (01:18:31):
Can do with his legs.

Speaker 11 (01:18:33):
But I think, you know, Pinnick and Asherman certainly have
the ability to make plays outside the pocket as well.
I think Pinnic has just the most natural arm talent
right now. I do think Eshlman has some series upside
in that regard, But again, he makes some throws that
are like, Wow, there's some serious talent here. He makes
them throws that, Okay, you're a redshirt freshman that has
no game experience, there's still some learning.

Speaker 7 (01:18:54):
You know.

Speaker 11 (01:18:55):
Again, Dougar I think is certainly the best athlete, but
there's still just some of those throws that, you know.

Speaker 4 (01:19:00):
They they don't give you a can, they don't give
you enough consistency. It's some of the accuracy.

Speaker 11 (01:19:06):
You know today for example, you know, he didn't didn't
turn it over, didn't make any mistakes, but it was
a lot of very short, checkdown type throws. Certainly can
make plays with his legs, and he did that multiple times.
But I think that the concern would just be with
him is can he consistently, you know, deliver on on
deep balls, on you know, intermediate routes or would you
have to kind of be very vanilla in going short

(01:19:28):
you know, Estamon Again, I think the upside is there.
I think there would probably be some concern about, you know,
just the consistency level for a younger guy that hasn't
played college football yet. When you look at Pinnick, I
think the deep ball is the one thing that's kind
of eluding him. He tried a couple of the day
and missed on and then that was kind of the
story through springball. But for the most part, was pretty
darn consistent. Again, just looking at today, connected on some

(01:19:50):
good intermediate routes, some good short routes. He can certainly
make some plays happen with his legs, and I think,
you know that the key for him, and we saw
this towards the end of the spring, is just being
a little bit steadier with the ball.

Speaker 4 (01:20:03):
There's a couple future many.

Speaker 11 (01:20:04):
Turnovers down the stretch in the spring. There were no
none today, which was I think a good thing for him.

Speaker 4 (01:20:09):
But I think he's in again.

Speaker 11 (01:20:12):
In my opinion, he's the guy who I think, when
when you take the field in the Apple.

Speaker 4 (01:20:16):
Cup, is gonna be QB one.

Speaker 11 (01:20:19):
But I do think that there was still very much
an avenue and a pass forward for both Eshelman and
Douger potentially win this job.

Speaker 1 (01:20:26):
Pennick was at at cal Davis, right and he was
Wasn't Didn't he have a hell of the season at
FCS last year?

Speaker 11 (01:20:32):
Yeah, the big skuy freshman of the year put up
some some really big numbers, including in the playoffs. He
can certainly play, and obviously you know there's a there's
a difference going from.

Speaker 4 (01:20:42):
From FCS to FBS, and he's again he's a.

Speaker 11 (01:20:44):
Younger guy, so it's not like you know, oh, he
was tearing up the FCS level for four years, but
you certainly saw the arm, talent and the potential of
what he can do now. Granted, his only real experience
against an FBS team, they went eight for sixteen for
fifty yards.

Speaker 4 (01:20:58):
Unfortunately that FBS was Washington, so there is something to
know within that.

Speaker 11 (01:21:04):
But I do think that there is a body of
work there that you saw even at a lower level.

Speaker 1 (01:21:11):
Positions of strength. Let me just start on the offense
for a second. I don't know if it's a position
of strength, but it feels like there's a lot of
dudes that returned on the offensive line.

Speaker 11 (01:21:20):
Yeah, I mean I think certainly at that position more
maybe more than anything else or anywhere else on the team.

Speaker 4 (01:21:27):
You want that continuity. You need that continuity.

Speaker 11 (01:21:30):
And then you look and say, okay, you bring back
Ashton Trip who started all thirteen games. You bring back
Johnny Lester who started all thirteen games. Kyle Martin and
Noah Dunham both started games last year. Nick Backin was
with the team last year. He was hurting most of
the year. You know, Maximus McCree has started games in
the Big ten. So you start to look at say, okay,
that's an offensive line that has a lot of continuity.

(01:21:51):
Now you graduated Brock, Do you graduated Christian Hillbourne? You
graduated A. J. Vaipulu.

Speaker 4 (01:21:56):
So there's three kind of starter graduates there.

Speaker 11 (01:21:59):
But it's not like you've just brought in this complete
overhaul of new faces. They only lost one guy to
the to the portal. That was Trevor Bendel, who went
to Iowa State. And yeah, you kind of kept your
your core group, and you didn't make it over with
a bunch of transfers. I mean, McCree obviously comes in. Uh,
they brought in Kololo to Aga, who's been at USC
and Utah. He's been mostly banged up though since he's

(01:22:21):
gotten here goin to miss the first part of fall
camp as well. But you have guys who know each other,
and I think on the offensive line that is just
so important because they know how to play off one
another and there's just that brotherhood, that fraternity that you know.
I kind of the old saying, if you play as
you play as one fist, not five fingers, And I
think that this offensive line, and it's still not entirely

(01:22:43):
sure how it's gonna shake out. I mean today, for example,
they had Baking playing right guard and Lester playing right tackle,
which is again odd considering the fact that in the
spring he was always Lester at left guard and McRee
at right tackle. You've also got Jalen Caldwell working back
from in so there's just a lot of different ways
they can go with the line. And I think the
biggest thing that stands out is they're just gonna be

(01:23:05):
so much deeper.

Speaker 1 (01:23:06):
Than they were a year ago, how Jamie Vini kook
fan dot com how how big was it for Kirby
Moore to retain Kirby Vorhees, Maxwell Woods, and uh Poula
Lossie their top three running backs.

Speaker 11 (01:23:20):
It was massive, I think, especially when you look at
the fact that you've got a new quarterback and a
handful of new receivers. Outside of obviously Tony Freeman, you
need to have some guys you can lean on, and
you know, you look at Vorhea's he was their best
running back last season. I think we certainly saw what
Maxwell Woods can do. I mean, second most rushing yards
in Wazoo Bowl Game history in the famous Idaho Potato Bull.

(01:23:40):
You look at Poola Lossie last year on in a
team that couldn't really run the ball, on a team
that you know couldn't block for the run, he didn't
get dropped for a single negative play, which is pretty
impressive considering all those circumstances. So you've got that kind
of three headed monster that you can really depend on.
You know, if the quarterback struggles coming out out of
the gage where it might be you feel like, okay,

(01:24:02):
we can hand the ball off and we've got three
running backs that can beat you in a different way.
Right for he's just going to be your down hill bruiser,
poopla loss. He can do a little bit of everything.
Whereas Woods is a guy you get.

Speaker 4 (01:24:11):
Him in space. I mean, he's got the chance to
break it every time he gets to the outside.

Speaker 6 (01:24:16):
You know.

Speaker 11 (01:24:16):
So I think it's not just bringing those guys back,
but bringing those guys back when you consider just how
variant their skill sets are.

Speaker 1 (01:24:24):
Jamie Viannick joining us kook fan Jamie the offensive head
coach in Kirby Moore, and we'll see, how you know,
We'll see how everything transforms, especially again, new quarterback, new
starting quarterback, a couple of new guys in the offensive line,
but it's some experience there. Good running backs. We'll see
if they can actually, like you said, run the football
this year. And Freeman leads a decent group of receivers,
and we'll kind of see how that works out. On

(01:24:45):
the other side, I'm curious about two things, your thoughts
on the overall personnel on the defensive side, but maybe
more importantly, listen, he wasn't a good head coach at
Oregon State, but man, it feels like a nice little
coupe to get Trent Brays your defensive court.

Speaker 11 (01:25:01):
You know, I think the thing that just stands out
about Trent Bray and everyone to talk to around the
Oregon State would kind of tell you the same.

Speaker 4 (01:25:08):
He's a defensive coordinator.

Speaker 11 (01:25:09):
And you know, he took the head coaching job to
try and you know, provide some continuity when Jonathan Smith
left and because he was dedicated and truly did love
Oregon State.

Speaker 4 (01:25:19):
But he's a defensive coordinator. That is what he was
bred to do. That's what he wants to do.

Speaker 11 (01:25:23):
He doesn't want to be in front of the media
talking all the time. He wants to sit there and
coach ball. And I think you see that just in
the way that he kind of is as a defensive coordinator.
You know, he's he's the guy you who just want
to be able to doesn't want to have to do
all the you know, all the kind of the the
hullabue that comes with being a head coach.

Speaker 4 (01:25:40):
He just wants to coach football.

Speaker 11 (01:25:42):
And I think you know you see that when he's
out there and you see kind of just his mannerisms,
his demeanor. He wants to be out of the spotlight
and just you know again at work, and I think
when you look at the talent on the defense and.

Speaker 4 (01:25:56):
It's just pretty remarkable what they were able to bring in.

Speaker 11 (01:25:59):
And again you talk about a defensive tackle unit for example,
you know, entering the portal season in January, they had
two guys that was it, Elijah Tucker and Cayden Beattie.
And then suddenly, you know, you're bringing in Paul Hudson
from Marshall who has been nothing sort of a menace
both in fault both today and in spring ball. You
bring into marj Lewis, the veteran guy three hundred plus pounds,
you know who's been at SMU, He's been in Indiana,

(01:26:20):
he's been at Purdue gyro Leo Pepatelle from Eastern Washington,
just an absolute monster in the middle, three hundred and
forty nine pounds, but with some you know mobility in there.
You know b D obviously back blon Miller from Saint Francis.
You know I k okafor who readshered at Cow last year.
So you've got that talent on defensive tackle. Then you

(01:26:41):
look at your two edges and you know you get
a guy like Len has Sunk, who did he start
at Vanderbilt No, but for four years played a.

Speaker 4 (01:26:47):
Consistent role for an SEC team and though especially in the.

Speaker 11 (01:26:50):
Last couple of years, a good SEC team you have
a guy like that on the end, probably bringing you know,
a talent level that you haven't had since Jackson and Stone.
You look at Matthias McLean, who was at Idaho but
put up monster numbers and was coveted by several.

Speaker 4 (01:27:05):
Big twelve schools. But he's a guy who grew up
a Wazoo fan.

Speaker 11 (01:27:08):
He's from h Priest Lake or Priest River, and uh,
you know, there's pictures of him after the Owaite Apple
Cup as a kid with Kenny Alfred after Wazoo beat
you up. So he bleeds Crimson and Gray. And I
think when you look at kind of what they're gonna
be able to do on the defensive line, I think
you've got a shot to be really, really effective up there.

(01:27:30):
And and maybe you know by mid season you're you're
not gonna be thinking about the guys that that followed
the last staff to Iowa State and kind of left you,
uh you know, with in the dustin left you with
nothing there for a little bit. I think they may
seriously have more talent upfront than they did last year.

Speaker 1 (01:27:45):
Linebacking corps has got to be better than it was.
How does that look?

Speaker 4 (01:27:50):
Yeah, I think it's it's young. I think that's the
thing that stands out.

Speaker 11 (01:27:54):
You know, Keith Brown's obviously been around College wall a
long time, Nyland Browns of Transferring State, who's played a
few years. DJ Warner the former top seventy five recruit
who was a really good pass rusher at Kansas and SMU,
But they're kind of making him more.

Speaker 4 (01:28:08):
Into a linebacker. That's what he kind of wants to play.

Speaker 11 (01:28:10):
I think the biggest question there is can they is
what can they get out of like the fourth and
fifth guys?

Speaker 1 (01:28:16):
Right?

Speaker 4 (01:28:16):
Is you feel confident with.

Speaker 11 (01:28:17):
Those three veterans I mentioned, but can you get you know,
four or five six guys producing? You know, Isaiah Hung
was arguably their best player in the spring, a kid
who came over with Rogers as a as a South
Dakota State flip. Didn't play last year, but he was
everywhere in the spring. Then you start to look at, Okay,
is there an opportunity for Lance McGee, the four A
State Player of the Year, to get on the field

(01:28:40):
in that number five spot. There's also Gage Jones, Jack Ellison,
They've been around a couple of years. Carson Reynolds who
came to Wazoo from STS. He's actually from Stedrow, Woollie.
So I think there's an opportunity. I do think linebacker
is still a question of can you kind of find
enough depths to be effective. But I do think that
there is some veterans in that room that is hopefully

(01:29:02):
going to kind of shore up maybe some of those
depths questions. And I think the biggest thing is is
you know, just be able to tackle. That obviously was
not a strength to the last ars. In fact, that
the glaring weak. But I think that is going to
be the biggest thing, is you know, can they kind
of mentor these guys to be able to tackle? And

(01:29:22):
I think that, you know, there's been a lot of
signs that it's going to improve, but obviously you.

Speaker 4 (01:29:25):
Got to see that on the field.

Speaker 1 (01:29:28):
I'll wrap it up with this, just circle back to
the quarterbacks Jamie before I let you go, when will
we know or will we know before the opener who
the starter is?

Speaker 12 (01:29:37):
Yeah?

Speaker 11 (01:29:38):
So I mean more said kind of towards the end
of spring or in the fall, camp, he's gonna come out,
he'll name a starter. He's not going to do the
whole charade like Rogers did last year where he won't
even announce it on the video board ahead of you know,
or during the opening game, which you know, I get
there's being KOI, but that was just standard.

Speaker 1 (01:29:55):
That was insane. I mean, that was absolutely insane what
he did last year. Yeah, you know, he he It
was one thing.

Speaker 11 (01:30:02):
You know, I don't want to name my starter publicly, Fine,
whatever if you don't want to do that and you
don't want to play the depth start, but when you
get to the game and now it's your starting quarterbacks,
so there won't be anything like that. I do think that,
you know more more basically said, you know, because I
asked them, like, are you gonna, you know, tell us
essentially who the starter will be?

Speaker 4 (01:30:20):
And he says, oh, yeah, you know, we'll announce it.

Speaker 11 (01:30:21):
So you know, I think I think he said August
twenty third, twenty fourth, right after fall camp ends. I'm
assuming there'll be a press conference either on the last
day or the day after.

Speaker 4 (01:30:32):
Uh, and he'll name who the quarterback will be.

Speaker 11 (01:30:34):
So unlike last year, there won't be just this guessing
game of and only for you know, Rogers coin is
is to look dumb when he doesn't when he has
to say screen games in so I think we will
certainly know before the Apple Cup in a couple of
weeks before and who QB one is going to be?

Speaker 1 (01:30:53):
Did Potter end up going to work like an FCS school?
Didn't he? Oh?

Speaker 4 (01:30:57):
No, old dominion?

Speaker 1 (01:30:58):
Oh well close enough, hink.

Speaker 4 (01:31:03):
I think he's gonna have a monster year.

Speaker 11 (01:31:04):
I'll put that out there. I think he's gonna have
a great year. I think that system fits him very well.

Speaker 1 (01:31:08):
Actually good Hey, cook fan dot com, you're Cougar fan.
Go subscribe, man, Go go check out with Jamie and
Barry Bolton and uh and Greg and the crew do
it's best coverage out there for Wazoo football in all
Wazoo sports as well. We'll check in again, buddy if
we can during fall camp. In the meantime, will one
encourage people to go to cook fan dot com. Thank you? Yep,

(01:31:28):
that is a Jamie Vinick does a great job. Cook
fan dot com. Love having him on. Get a little
feel for things as well as a college football team's
hitting the field training camp underway. I believe I think
is Softy out at DUB today or is he here?

Speaker 2 (01:31:42):
He is at Jimmy's.

Speaker 1 (01:31:44):
Oh, that's right, at Jimmy's today. Okay, well, I'm sure
he was out at UDUB earlier today. Right, he's out
there helping making sure that fish knows what's going on.
So like, I'm not sure you can get through a
first practice, all Softy out there helping him out. So
all right, we'll check you with him A two forty five.
We come back four nine four five one. That is
that to coming to outge text line four nine four
to five to one, as well as we'll see if

(01:32:06):
there's a talkback er two on the red microphone. iHeartRadio
app all coming up on nine three point three KFM.

Speaker 6 (01:32:15):
Now back to Ian Furness on your Home for the Husties,
Crackett and the twelfth Man, brought to you by Seattle's
Closest Sn't Call Me Casino and Hotel on Sports Radio
ninety three point three KJR FM.

Speaker 1 (01:32:30):
Alright, was good to talk.

Speaker 4 (01:32:31):
About this is the Ancient Mariner.

Speaker 13 (01:32:33):
Just a couple of thoughts on the ejection last night
at T Mobile Park of Jimothy Knight and thanks to
Aaron Goldsmith for belaboring that whole thing.

Speaker 4 (01:32:43):
That was great television.

Speaker 1 (01:32:44):
But back to the ejection.

Speaker 14 (01:32:46):
I mean, that's got to be the first time that
a manager has been ejected and Andrews analytically, you can
probably back me up on this, that a manager has
been ejected for telling en up that his ejection was
a tough one.

Speaker 2 (01:33:06):
Analytically that is correct, sir, thank you.

Speaker 1 (01:33:09):
The analytics tell us correct. He nailed it, totally nailed
it the way, so good, lordy lordie so four two
five On the text line, Maurer manager Dan Wilson suspended
by MLB for telling the Empire politely his ejection was
quote a tough one.

Speaker 3 (01:33:29):
See.

Speaker 1 (01:33:29):
That's the problem now is that it has become just
a joke. Oh totally, he's a meme. Tough one tonight,
tough one tonight, tough one tonight. It's a tough one tonight.

Speaker 2 (01:33:39):
He didn't get his money's worth. I'll tell you that.
If you're gonna get ejected, get ejected.

Speaker 1 (01:33:45):
How many times have you heard that line? Too? Well,
get his money's worth now. Yeah, And the problem is
we don't have as many ejections as we used to.
It's true, well, well, because abs yeah, there's actually been
quite a bit this year. We just never see him
because Dan was at the case just missing it.

Speaker 3 (01:34:01):
We never see him.

Speaker 1 (01:34:02):
I guess that could happen my fault.

Speaker 2 (01:34:04):
Like Aaron Boon, I think is like ten or something.

Speaker 1 (01:34:06):
He's different. I mean, he's that's a different deal. That's
just that's that's just a different deal. I love it, though.

Speaker 2 (01:34:12):
I want my manager to be like that.

Speaker 1 (01:34:15):
Yeah, yeah, well, I mean, listen, the most legendary guy
here ever was Lou of course, right, and we all
loved Lou and Lou had. Part of the reason we
love Lou is because of the red ass part of it, right,
just like I think part of it too. With that
attitude and that demeanor, you felt like he was sticking

(01:34:35):
up and fighting for his players and fighting for the
organization and winning it all costs like it. Like with Lou,
it just felt like every loss was worse than any
win could be good. And fans like that because they're fans, Yes,
they're they're that's that's they want. They want that to
be the case.

Speaker 4 (01:34:54):
So oh.

Speaker 1 (01:35:02):
God, I'm okay, I'm reading text here. Let me do
you see anything good?

Speaker 2 (01:35:07):
I'm just I'm not necessarily good but I want you
to respond to this three six, maybe shout out to
the people that actually donated, considering are something good? Okay, yes, well, okay, Well,
first of all, before you get jumped in, yes we
love we people who are doing something for a cause,

(01:35:28):
you're still buying beer. It's the beer that.

Speaker 1 (01:35:32):
Well, but they were dropping stuff off too, they were
dropping off goods. But okay, I get okay, my apologies
during something good giving a shout out to some local
small businesses who are trying to help out by not
mentioning those great people. Almost if you're one of those,
I'm assuming there's two things here to that text. One,

(01:35:54):
you gave something and you need a pat on the back. Okay,
there's your pat on the back of tank. Or I'll
ask you this. Were you one of the people that
donated and gave something. If not, then shut the hell
up anyway, I'm sorry. This is this is this is
why it's hard to do good things, because there's always

(01:36:15):
going to be that guy going to be that guy.

Speaker 2 (01:36:19):
To five, if Tom Dundan had bought the Seahawks, would
his kid's name be added to the wall with all
the other Seahawks players in Seattle?

Speaker 5 (01:36:27):
History.

Speaker 2 (01:36:27):
Yes, yes, it would be it would be well, honestly,
that probably would be something like that.

Speaker 1 (01:36:35):
It's just so bad, so they would have got they
would have got.

Speaker 3 (01:36:38):
Rings, you know.

Speaker 1 (01:36:39):
And if you missed our interview yesterday with Jason Quick
from the Athletic talking about Dundon and what's going on
in Portante, I would urge you to go back and
take a listen to that on the podcast. I mean
that tells you everything he needs out. Personally, I would
be just sideways if I was a Blazer fan. And

(01:37:02):
the part of it, obviously that the threat, the possibility
slim or not that they could move, that's number one
on the list. But having that guy be your owner,
knowing he spends nothing and will spend nothing, and.

Speaker 2 (01:37:20):
It's one thing to be cheap, like we've had a fairshis.

Speaker 1 (01:37:23):
Coaches on a one year contract. Yeah, that's unheard of
in pro sports for a playoff team, by the way,
sort of but yeah, yeah, yeah, playing game but yeah,
but they got in. They want to play game. Yeah. Right,
that's the epitome of the mushy middle is do you
want to talk about the mushy middle?

Speaker 2 (01:37:36):
Playing game? There was a playing game in NHL Crack
would be in it every year.

Speaker 1 (01:37:41):
They would have been, and frankly I would take it.
Yeah right, hey, that's a let's be honest, yea, the
first run of Major League Baseball playoffs are playing game,
I mean best of three series.

Speaker 4 (01:37:55):
Yeah, come on, but.

Speaker 2 (01:37:56):
It's what how many it's the playing game. It's over
ath league for n MBA if that's not a league,
it's more it's more for baseball, no for for basketball. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
that's what I mean.

Speaker 1 (01:38:06):
There's twenty twenty teams GOETNA play are doing some form
of the playoffs. There's only thirty teams in the NBA. Yeah,
the NBA is a joke in that regard. But but
would you agree like the wildcard best two f.

Speaker 2 (01:38:18):
Three, it's an extra series. It's a glorified game one
sixty three, that's what it is.

Speaker 1 (01:38:24):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's that's one hundred percent when it
is Okay, I'll read this one here. When do we
do the fantasy segment? That's from David good question, good question.
What's today? It's the un official start of the weekend.
It's a Thursday. Next Thursday's Well, let's go. That's the plan.
That's the plan. Hang on a second, hang on, read

(01:38:46):
another text re I'm gonna text him real yeah, oh yeah,
make sure he can do it next Thursday.

Speaker 2 (01:38:51):
FYI says Keith. One hundred and seventy three ejections in
twenty five this year through August to total is sixty three,
So you are correct, sir.

Speaker 1 (01:39:01):
There is a lot like thank you, thank you for correcting.
And I never said you were wrong. I just said
I don't know, or as Joe Sheen calls him, hoers,
that's true.

Speaker 2 (01:39:11):
Nathan Bishop also calls me that, but he also calls
Jared kell nick Jared Keller Nick, Well, you.

Speaker 1 (01:39:16):
Don't have to worry about that anymore. It's even in
big leagues anymore.

Speaker 2 (01:39:19):
No, he's not okay, yeah yeah, uh.

Speaker 5 (01:39:25):
What else?

Speaker 3 (01:39:25):
We got sick?

Speaker 2 (01:39:28):
So, without a doubt, this has been the most unfun
season to watch the Mariners that I can remember. They
simply don't sec. They don't score unless they hit a
home run, which happens in about ten seconds. I do
agree that because home runs are more prevalent now in
terms of scoring runs, that it has taken the fun

(01:39:51):
out of hitting a home run for a fan. I
should say, like, you don't see the triples, the stolen bases.
They did a poll like a few years ago about
the most exciting plays in baseball. Triple number one is
the triple. Number two is a stolen base over the
home run. So really yeah, number three I think it
was a diving catch, right, So like when you know

(01:40:11):
what gets you out of your chair, right, obviously, if
it's a big moment, you're gonna you're gonna do that
for a for a home run.

Speaker 1 (01:40:16):
But still, so the plan would be, uh for fantasy
to start with Fundston next Thursday. I just texted him,
But he's the worst in the world about getting back,
probably because he's got a job with the Athletic. He's
got him and Jay I went to the the Athletic
fantasy site the other day after we watch Hard Knocks
because we started getting all fired up for fantasy football.

(01:40:38):
So I went to that and downloaded the old Excel sheet.
You can kind of do it for your own league
and scoring, and yeah, I was getting repped up. I
was getting one hundred percent repped. We've got our Board
of Governors meeting already scheduled. Here we go.

Speaker 3 (01:40:51):
We got to do a.

Speaker 2 (01:40:54):
Kind of an group for the on air people in
terms of Funston with his fans, like when we bring
him on, he's all in our league. So we're like, hey,
I play you this week. Don't like that? That would
be so much fun?

Speaker 1 (01:41:04):
What do you mean now? I'm curious?

Speaker 2 (01:41:06):
So like you, me, Funston, a few other you know,
people all in the same league.

Speaker 1 (01:41:11):
I can't do another league. You can't. No, I'm into.
I can't do more. I have a two team alone,
two league limit limit. Yeah, they forced me to be
in the kJ I won a couple of years ago.
Was I just did you bailed? I just didn't care
because I had the other two that mattered because they
made Listen, there's got to be significant jews for for
me to care that one. I that one when there's
like no entry fee three years ago.

Speaker 2 (01:41:33):
Well that's not the case anymore.

Speaker 1 (01:41:35):
I still I can't. I can't.

Speaker 2 (01:41:36):
Yeah, like you, when you say juice, you mean a
possibility to get last and have a day off.

Speaker 1 (01:41:42):
No, that's a whole different deal. Like I said, we've
we've got our Board of Governor's meeting coming here soon.
That's that's coming up here real quick. For our for
our league. With that, with that that gong show that
you met Yep, we'll see how that discussion. I'm I'm
assuming that that's that those guys will want to do

(01:42:02):
that again. I'm also going to assume that I'm not
going to finish last again. I don't think anybody's in
the league's ever finished last two years in a row,
and I don't plan to be in the first. I
was gonna say this, I am I'm a former champion.

Speaker 2 (01:42:12):
You know.

Speaker 1 (01:42:14):
God. The best thing is is like I wish you
and soft. You need to stop telling people that that's
like to stop telling those guys that that's a bad idea.
It's a great idea for them to do my show.

Speaker 2 (01:42:27):
It gets you to join them.

Speaker 1 (01:42:30):
Not joining the league, I'm not. No, I told you
I'm not doing it. Get sales guy Rory in it
or something, or sales guy will or get Rich Strauss
in it.

Speaker 2 (01:42:39):
Oh God, we don't want that guy in it.

Speaker 3 (01:42:41):
No, I know you don't.

Speaker 5 (01:42:43):
Is just in it?

Speaker 2 (01:42:44):
Probably is Chuckles in it. Yeah, he's the commissioner.

Speaker 1 (01:42:48):
I definitely don't want to be in No, I kid, Chuck,
I come, no, I'm not. I'm telling you I'm not
doing it, all right, I am not doing it. I
am not doing it. I'm I'm into I give I
give a crap about too. That's the only thing I
find two to be hard. The only thing is that
the scoring is so different. It's it's fine, right.

Speaker 2 (01:43:06):
What else is not doing it?

Speaker 1 (01:43:08):
Softy? Yeah, see, I stand with Softy.

Speaker 2 (01:43:12):
He doesn't do any though.

Speaker 1 (01:43:13):
I know in this case I stand with soft I
don't stand with Softy often. In this case, I stand
with Softy. I'm I stand, I stand, I'm walked step
with Softy.

Speaker 2 (01:43:22):
I'm grabbing that as a drop for him.

Speaker 1 (01:43:26):
Bill Jonas next.

Speaker 3 (01:43:36):
Oh Jesus, I love it.

Speaker 1 (01:43:37):
I love a heavy. I love a heavy.

Speaker 12 (01:43:40):
I mean, dude, I'm sitting here at Jimmy's. I look
up at three nothing. I'm like, what the hell just happened?
Like seriously, It's like these guys aren't even in the
stands yet.

Speaker 3 (01:43:48):
I mean, the gates aren't even open. It's three nothing.
You're just what the hell's going on?

Speaker 1 (01:43:54):
You're just waiting for a matdown. I love it.

Speaker 3 (01:43:56):
Hell's going on?

Speaker 12 (01:43:57):
Listen, I blame you, me, everybody here. I got those
four gals. They probably went to the game and left early.
You guys left early.

Speaker 3 (01:44:04):
Didn't yet?

Speaker 12 (01:44:05):
Yeah, I know you quitters. They left early. Got them
a shot of whiskey on you in for Nest by.

Speaker 1 (01:44:11):
The way, Yeah, put it on the in for Neest tab. Yeah.
Put it on that tab. That'll get you a long way.
That'll get you a long way.

Speaker 3 (01:44:16):
Andrews is my wallet by the way back there, it's up.

Speaker 8 (01:44:20):
Now.

Speaker 3 (01:44:21):
I got the perfect clip to describe what's happening with
the Mariners.

Speaker 1 (01:44:23):
All right, you ready, okay, here, why don't you give
me half the money in a pant. We'll go out back,
I'll kick you in the nuts and we'll call it
a day. That's one of my favorite drops.

Speaker 3 (01:44:35):
Oh god, I love that it's kick you in the
nuts night at T Mobile Parks.

Speaker 1 (01:44:39):
Oh I love that this gets kicked.

Speaker 2 (01:44:43):
Half the nights out of the year.

Speaker 3 (01:44:44):
You you're your cups.

Speaker 1 (01:44:46):
I I'm waiting, okay. I The sick, demented part of
me right is hoping things hold true right because I'm not.
I heard the show on TUESDA two days right and Wednesday, Wednesday, yes, yesterday, Yeah,
after Tuesday's game. Then they bounced back.

Speaker 5 (01:45:05):
It a win.

Speaker 1 (01:45:06):
That's nice. But as I was driving out of there
yesterday from the Virginia Mason Athletics Center. It was thirteen.
I counted it thirteen straight minutes. It was a borderline
filibuster with Millan on the line, and it was thirteen minutes.
And it was one of your all time best.

Speaker 3 (01:45:25):
Yeah, that was a good one.

Speaker 1 (01:45:26):
This is an outrage, This is an absolute affront. Oh,
there he is. There is mister climate change. There's mister
climate change. He's having a worst week. He's having a
worst week than the Ams are.

Speaker 3 (01:45:37):
But it's just done.

Speaker 12 (01:45:39):
I was talking to Dick Off here. We're just guys,
We're just we're we're kind of running out of time,
like let's go. Yeah, right, Like I've been the sucker.
I think Dick for the most part, has kind of
been there that at some point there's going to be
a run. Will it be enough, we don't know, but
there's going to be a run. Like Col's gotta have
a run Naylor if if Naylor can wait until next Wednesday,

(01:45:59):
he'll love go on two months without hitting a homer?

Speaker 1 (01:46:01):
Are you too much? Are you kind of for that?

Speaker 4 (01:46:05):
Well?

Speaker 12 (01:46:05):
I don't care about it's on base streak is here
to drive in runs twenty five games. He's here to
be the guy that we saw last year. I mean,
obviously getting on base and stealing badge is a part
of it. But there's a reason why he's not our
leadoff hitter. That's the reason why he hits where he does,
because he's supposed to drive in runs two months. It's
already the longest streak of his career. You guys know that,

(01:46:26):
right for Naylor, this is he He's never come even
close to go on this long. And then cal and
the crap with Gabe Spire and Collibra Torres last night,
and I gotta be honest with you. I don't know
what your take is, but I kind of found myself
agreeing with Chuck. I'm like, what are we doing?

Speaker 1 (01:46:42):
I have no idea what.

Speaker 2 (01:46:45):
We're settlling personal vendettas and losing this game.

Speaker 3 (01:46:48):
I mean, if you're ten games up, fine do it.
But you're not.

Speaker 12 (01:46:51):
You're fighting your ass off for a wild card spot.
You can't afford to lose one of your what top
three relievers.

Speaker 2 (01:46:55):
You think was going to be out for three games?

Speaker 5 (01:46:57):
Right?

Speaker 4 (01:46:57):
Right?

Speaker 3 (01:46:58):
Yeah, it's such appealing, but we'll see.

Speaker 1 (01:47:00):
To say two things. One, the timing probably wasn't perfect
because of who's throwing right right, I didn't mind them.
If that was the case. Now here's the case. Did
he do it or did Cal call for it? As
if called for If Cal called for it, that's a
little selfish on his part, right, Like, Hey, this guy
got me.

Speaker 12 (01:47:18):
Did you did you see did you see this opposed
conversation between Raleigh and Torres last.

Speaker 3 (01:47:25):
Night after he got hit?

Speaker 12 (01:47:27):
Well there's kind of john Yeah, and then Torres apparently
like I'm not a lip reader, but you know, Twitter
reads lips and they said that Colaboratrres looked at Call
and said.

Speaker 3 (01:47:38):
Hey, man, at least I got hits.

Speaker 1 (01:47:41):
Damn.

Speaker 12 (01:47:42):
I mean, I don't know if that's true or not.
I'm just saying that somebody claimed that he was mouthing
that that that.

Speaker 1 (01:47:48):
Is absolutely a savage move man.

Speaker 12 (01:47:51):
Well, but then, but then, but then I started thinking
about it, like, is Cal Rowley not a He's a
well like guy right around baseball. So the WBC change that, Yeah, yeah,
you know what that gliber and Randy are on the
same team.

Speaker 3 (01:48:05):
Okay, strew that fat North Carolina tar heel.

Speaker 1 (01:48:08):
That that's an interesting dynamic there. Did w b C
change like did something like that little that one? First
of all, two things did that one moment screw this
clubhouse up?

Speaker 3 (01:48:19):
I don't think so.

Speaker 1 (01:48:20):
Okay, I don't think did that one? Is that also
something that changed the person because baseball players are so
happy grab ass e a. You know we're talking at
first base. That's because that if he said that.

Speaker 12 (01:48:30):
I don't think that Randy a Rose Arena and Cal
Rawley's beef is the reason why Josh Naylor hasn't hit
a home run in two months.

Speaker 1 (01:48:36):
Oh, I think it is. I think.

Speaker 12 (01:48:41):
I don't think it's the reason why the Mariners went
to this stupid ass piggyback and six.

Speaker 2 (01:48:45):
Man roo, the reason why Brian Wu sucks on the road.

Speaker 3 (01:48:47):
Nope, not at all.

Speaker 1 (01:48:50):
When it is, I don't know.

Speaker 3 (01:48:51):
I don't buy that.

Speaker 1 (01:48:52):
There's gotta be some reason he sucks on the road.

Speaker 6 (01:48:54):
What is it.

Speaker 12 (01:48:55):
Here's when you'll find last night, Here's when you'll find
out if Randy's got a real problem with Calwhnry signs
with somebody else.

Speaker 1 (01:49:01):
Over the offseason.

Speaker 3 (01:49:02):
Yeah, then you'll find out.

Speaker 12 (01:49:03):
I think we got that he's playing for the Reds
next year or wherever the hell he is. Somebody will
ask him. He's like, oh yeah, I had a problem.

Speaker 1 (01:49:09):
That's it.

Speaker 3 (01:49:09):
Screw that guy.

Speaker 1 (01:49:10):
That's a done deal. I was foreshadow with your interview
with Scott Boris. I think he needed no bones about that.

Speaker 12 (01:49:15):
So how about how about Randy rose Arena having the
best defensive game of his life last night?

Speaker 3 (01:49:19):
Where the hell that come from?

Speaker 12 (01:49:21):
It's like Jamal Adams sacrificing his body to make a
tackle at the one yard line, blowing his neck.

Speaker 3 (01:49:26):
That's that's all for the.

Speaker 1 (01:49:27):
Team best Jamal Adams making a play without getting the
benefit of a blitz.

Speaker 3 (01:49:31):
That ten for eleven from the free throw line is
what that was like.

Speaker 1 (01:49:35):
You'll never see in sports. Good lord, I'm looking forward
to another filibuster today. Yes, yeah, about a half hour
away from that.

Speaker 3 (01:49:42):
All I'm done. No, no, no, sir, I blow my
I blew my wad.

Speaker 1 (01:49:46):
Yes, sir, you can say that all you want.

Speaker 2 (01:49:48):
He's never done that.

Speaker 1 (01:49:50):
That is not going to be the case. Mount Softy.
I see it right now off in the distance. Mount,
there's a little plumes of smoke coming out right now
to evacuate and out you better, dick. Mount Softy is
gonna he's gonna blow up later. What are you got
coming up today?

Speaker 3 (01:50:05):

Speaker 12 (01:50:05):

gonna join us. Elennius Davis is you know who that is?

Speaker 3 (01:50:12):

defensive tackle for the Dogs, join us.

Speaker 1 (01:50:17):

Speaker 5 (01:50:19):

Speaker 3 (01:50:19):

Speaker 1 (01:50:28):
Okay, that's good.

Speaker 12 (01:50:29):
So and then Jessman's in in the studio filding for Jackson,
who's doing god knows.

Speaker 3 (01:50:34):
What today I have no.

Speaker 1 (01:50:35):
Oh, hey, there's Jess I see it right now. She's
she looks thrilled.

Speaker 3 (01:50:38):
Anders, how come the sounder sucks so bad?

Speaker 5 (01:50:40):
Man?

Speaker 3 (01:50:41):
What's going on with your socker?

Speaker 1 (01:50:43):
I'm telling you he's going to a rough lader. Don't
know anywhere I got.

Speaker 3 (01:50:47):
I got Dick back, which means I can't play this dropping.

Speaker 1 (01:50:49):
Yes, it's true, this man has no doubt. We gotta go.
I'll see it.

Speaker 14 (01:50:53):
Man for the mild mannered and marginally objectionable Inverness, this
is paddle day, saying

Speaker 1 (01:50:59):
