Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's strange on so many levels. I think this completes
the circuit for the NFL. They'll put the stuff out
later this week, but I think that completes the circuit.
They will have now played every day of the week.
Every day. Had they not played Wednesday before? Well, when
they played the Tuesday night game in L.A. a few
years ago, I believe that was the first Tuesday game.
I can't imagine. I don't think they played on a Wednesday.

(00:21):
I'll tell you this. This will complete it for Seahawks
because Seahawks will now play on every night of the week.
including Tuesday, which the Tuesday night football game was the
weirdest thing I've ever been a part of. We went
down there. That was the 2021 season. And when people
were still getting sick sometimes, and if they got sick
or they tested, and I'm trying to think if we

(00:43):
were still getting tested.

Speaker 2 (00:44):
Russ's last year, right?

Speaker 1 (00:46):
I think it was, yeah. And we went down, and remember,
the game was supposed to be played on... God, was
this supposed to be like a Thursday game or something?
I want to say it wasn't even a Sunday. Maybe
it was Sunday and they just pushed it to Tuesday. Yeah,
because it ended up being on our air. We ended
up sending a whole crew down there. We did all
this stuff for Fox 13. Last second changes. But I

(01:08):
remember how we were kind of upset up here because
the reason it got changed is because the Rams had
some illnesses. Well, everyone had a practice squad. But they
catered to Kroenke and the Rams.

Speaker 2 (01:19):
Of course they do.

Speaker 1 (01:20):
And ended up playing on a Tuesday. The Rams, I think,
ended up winning that game. Um, but I remember that,
that was, that was odd. Like it was Tuesday. Like,
this is so weird. Like just so strange. Now we
got a Wednesday opener, but can't wait. I mean, bring
the Patriots on.

Speaker 3 (01:34):
Let's go.

Speaker 1 (01:34):
Uh, we're going to get back to them in a second.
Mariners play today about one o'clock. So we'll get a
conversation with them in a second. We got a lot
of college football coming up today. I'm excited. It's our
first day of Stuart Mandel. And in terms of the
weekly visits with Stu Mandel, the, uh, the guru of
all things college football at The Athletic, also the Audible
podcast as well. This dude does a great job. This

(01:56):
will be the third year, I believe, he's on with
us on a weekly basis. Is that your favorite college
football podcast? I've got two that are one and one. Okay.
The Audible I love, and it's very different from the
other one I listen to. The other one I listen
to is the Cover 3 podcast on CBS, which is
part of the Gary Parish world. Right, right. They do
a great job too. Chip Patterson, Tom Fernelli, Danny Connell.

Speaker 2 (02:15):
Different kind of.

Speaker 1 (02:17):
aspects of talk. Yeah, they're very different, but they're both
really good. And if you're a college football fan, both
those are good. The Audible's really good, and Stuart's the
editor-in-chief of the Athletics College Football Coverage and does a
great job there. So yeah, I'm ready for some college football.

Speaker 2 (02:35):
You're a junkie, man.

Speaker 1 (02:36):
I am a massive junkie. You're such a college football junkie.
I am a massive college football junkie. We'll talk to
the Cougs today. Alex and MK will join us coming
up at 2 p.m.

Speaker 4 (02:44):
Today.

Speaker 1 (02:45):
I'm going to get into something at 1.30. I'm a
little bent out of shape with my school for two
different things. And don't think for a second I'm turning
into Softie or anybody else, because I hate when people
tell any of us as Coug fans how to feel.

(03:06):
Drives me absolutely insane. Don't tell me how to feel
about my team. Don't tell me how to feel about
the situation we're in. Don't tell me how to feel
about going to games, not going to games, being excited
for a season. Don't tell me about how to fan
as a Cougar fan. But I'm going to say with
our particular athletic department right now, they are not doing

(03:28):
themselves any favors on a couple different levels. The band
thing is one thing. There's something else I'm going to
get into, but it's all kind of part of the
bigger picture. We are not doing ourselves favors as Coug fans,
as an athletic department. You're making it hard, Washington State.
You're making it hard to be a fan. And you're
making it really hard to cover the team. And let

(03:50):
me just give you a quick little pointer. It's one
thing if you're TCU and you're giving a middle finger
to the only outlet covering you. You're still in the
Big 12. You're TCU. You're in a big market. It's
one thing if you're not. We'll get to that at
1.30 today because I'm a little sideways with these guys.
But anyway, that's all coming up today. Hard Knocks ended
last night. Seven days out now from the Seahawks opening

(04:12):
up the title defense of their second Super Bowl championship.
I'll tell you what never gets old. And I don't
know if fans notice this. I noticed it because we
spend a lot of time in the indoor practice facility.
There's interviews that are conducted in there after practice. Sometimes
we go in there. There's walkthroughs that we can watch
for 10 minutes or what have you. personally, Levine and

(04:33):
I and Rang, probably over the years of doing draft
day coverage, not just on KJR, but on Fox 13,
that was like our home for television, for tons of
stuff we used to do. Spent a lot of time
in the IPF. And what never gets old to me
as someone who grew up in Seattle, and I hope
fans notice this watching Hard Knocks, is when they show

(04:53):
basically the east side, which is kind of the side facing.
If you're looking out, it'd be facing 405. It's the
part you can see. from I-405 of the indoor practice facility,
and they've got the two banners hanging.

Speaker 4 (05:04):
Oh, yeah.

Speaker 1 (05:04):
With every player's name on it, coach's name's on it,
and it's just awesome. And the banner they hang in
the stadium is one thing, but it's just plain. It's,
you know, Super Bowl champions get the Lombardi. The one
in the IPF with all the names, I never go
in there and don't look at it and don't look
at the names from the first one all these years later,
and now the second one's up there as well.

Speaker 2 (05:24):
Pretty damn cool.

Speaker 3 (05:25):
So cool.

Speaker 1 (05:25):
Like, just to think about the success that they've had
under John Schneider. It's remarkable. We spent yesterday talking a lot, Anders,
about what annoys you about the Mariners and just like
why is it that people have just turned on this team?
And they have. Even after last night, they've turned on them.

(05:47):
Montez gives them a great little boost, but then you
just decide you're... Greg said it best. The iPad says
don't play him today. Really? Okay. So.
As much as they've done that to our world, what
has happened to the other side is, yeah, they win.
I get it. But the way the Seahawks bring this area,

(06:13):
this community, this region together is really remarkable.

Speaker 3 (06:16):
From all backgrounds.

Speaker 1 (06:18):
All backgrounds. Even if you're just a casual fan.

Speaker 2 (06:21):
100%.

Speaker 1 (06:21):
You're just into it. Even if you don't know who's playing,
what position they play. I mean, listen, my wife... I
think to this day, we're watching Hard Knocks explaining stuff
to her. God bless her. But she's into it, right?
And that team just brings people together. And I think
if you love the Seahawks five weeks ago and then

(06:45):
you watch five weeks of Hard Knocks, how much more
do you love them? A lot. Mike McDonald is just
an absolute nerdy rock star. That's a great one.

Speaker 2 (06:54):
Nerdy rock star.

Speaker 1 (06:54):
He is a nerdy rock star, man. He is the
biggest nerd in the NFL, and he's a rock star.
How he handles himself, how he handles that team. The
fact that that dude, just, again, kind of a nerd.
Kind of awkward at times. 100%. And he even admits that.

(07:17):
And yet, in the palm of his hands, he's got
70 alpha male NFL players. In the palm of his hands.
that love him and they'll go through a wall for him.
I think it's one of the most amazing things about coaching.
In any sport, at any level, how do you find
the magic sauce? Like, how do you find that? We're

(07:40):
going to talk a little bit about Bill Doba at two.
We have Alex and MK on. Doba's the former Wazoo coach.
He was Pac-12 coach of the year in 02 and
took over for Mike Price and had a decent little
run and then was let go, basically. But And Dobbs
had a hell of a run as a defensive coordinator
with the Cougs.

Speaker 3 (08:00):
Hell of a run.

Speaker 1 (08:01):
One of the best defensive coordinators, I'd argue, in the country,
to be honest with you. Doba was this grandfather-like figure,
this father-like figure. And if you just met him, you
wouldn't think football coach. And yet, I know those guys,
especially MKL, tell stories about what he meant to them.
you wouldn't have thought that when you first meet him,

(08:22):
but then you talk, players gravitated towards him. Mike McDonald's
that way. It's, it's really, and then his staff is
so diverse in terms of the personalities. You've got Leslie Frazier,
who was a future a few times, who's the former
head coach in Minnesota. You guys have, that's a name
NFL fans know. It just kind of is a, mentor

(08:45):
to McDonald. But you see how he handles things. Really
nice guy. Then you've got Thomas Hammock, the running backs coach,
former Northern Illinois coach. He speaks like a hockey coach.
Every other word's the F word. And demands from them. Frism,
the run receivers coach, is kind of like that too.

Speaker 2 (09:02):
I love him. He's been my favorite position coach.

Speaker 1 (09:06):
It's just this great collection of dudes. I thought at
the end that Hard Knocks absolutely flat out hit it
out of the park. Just nailed it. Now we are really, really,
really biased because it's our team, but as someone who's
been around it for a long time and has been

(09:26):
there since day one of the John Schneider regime and
was with them on the road and at home, I
can tell you the culture and how it things go
with Schneider. It's, they captured it and that sometimes is
hard to do when you're editing things and you're trying
to protect you know different types of you know secrets
behind closed doors they nailed it and i'll tell you
the highlight for me was the dino shot.

Speaker 2 (09:48):
Yes john scheider having a beer with his buddies talking about.

Speaker 1 (09:52):
The roster i i you know we used to do
shows weekly at dino's and Softie and I did during
football season. They, and I, I don't know if they're still, well,
he's traveling this year cause he's the, he's the sideline guy,
but you know, they've done Dave and the, and the
Hawks have done shows there for Husky road games at Dino's.

(10:13):
Dino's a great spot, great food, great service, cool people
right off of 405, right across the street from the facility.
We've been going there for years. So has Schneider, to
be honest with you. And, you know, John's just– I
think what that showed, he's just a regular dude. I'm
getting out of the office. I'm going to have a
beer real quick. I'm going to talk to you guys.
Let's go over there. He's with Ivan, the strength coach,

(10:35):
and he's with– what's his face? Mo Kelly. And he's
hanging out with those guys doing that. And I was
watching it, and now– There's part of me, I'm sure
Dino's would love it. Like, don't flock there and hope
to see Schneider. And if you do, just leave him alone.

Speaker 5 (10:54):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (10:55):
Because he's such a regular there that I have, we
had a meeting there for the Mayor of Maple Valley
Open early June, mid-June. And we were in there and
he's in there with a couple of dudes, a couple
of scouts or personnel guys. People just leave him alone. Good.
And I love that. And I think for a guy
that he's got a spot, he can do that. He's
a Green Bay guy. He wants to have a pop.
I can tell you this, he loves Manny's. He is

(11:16):
a Manny's guy, like, to this day.

Speaker 6 (11:18):
Yes.

Speaker 1 (11:18):
Most of us have evolved into the Bodhisattva.

Speaker 2 (11:20):
World at Georgetown.

Speaker 4 (11:21):
No, stick with.

Speaker 1 (11:23):
He's a Manny's guy. You're a Manny's guy.

Speaker 2 (11:24):
I am a Manny's guy.

Speaker 1 (11:25):
So you've got to love the guy.

Speaker 3 (11:26):
I love that.

Speaker 1 (11:27):
What did you think of the final hard knocks?

Speaker 2 (11:28):
I mean, everything you said and more, I wrote down
a couple takeaways in the coaching and what you were
saying about, you know, how Mike McDonald's the nerdy rock
star and, you know, it's amazing watching what he can
do to captivate a room.

Speaker 4 (11:43):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (11:44):
Um, in different ways too. It's like, he, he's not this, uh,
the Dan Campbell rah, rah, I'm going to get everyone
pumped up sort of screaming situation. It's like, Hey, I'm,
I'm almost a teacher.

Speaker 1 (11:54):
Right.

Speaker 2 (11:55):
And even more so specifically with Nicky Minwari, we saw
it again. He's a father figure to him.

Speaker 7 (12:01):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (12:02):
And that's something that really kind of struck home with
me because this is now the second time. It seems
like it's hard to tell what context these meetings are in,
in his office.

Speaker 1 (12:11):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (12:12):
But it's been the second time where Eamon Rory's kind
of come in and with a little bit of a, um, uneasy,
like part about his rehab, right? He, he was upset
that he had the injury. He doesn't know what he
wants to do. He doesn't know.

Speaker 3 (12:25):
The first episode.

Speaker 1 (12:25):
Yeah.

Speaker 7 (12:25):
Yes.

Speaker 2 (12:26):
And now this, this one with everyone expecting him to
come back, when are you going to come back? He
has all these questions and, um, kind of not really
about sure about himself.

Speaker 1 (12:35):
He's a young man that's got a lot going on
in his mind.

Speaker 3 (12:37):
Exactly.

Speaker 1 (12:39):
And he's, but he's got a, I love, I love
the message though. McDonald said, Hey, when you're ready.

Speaker 4 (12:43):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (12:44):
And your, your body's going to tell you, you can't,
you can't tell it when you can't push the button
a certain amount of times.

Speaker 1 (12:48):
And it's all of a sudden ready. It's just, it's,
I did come out of that thinking he ain't playing
week one. I agree. But that was a week ago.
They filmed that. So maybe even more than a week ago, but,
but yeah, Yeah, I kind of got the, but I like,
I love the attitude of like, we're not pressuring you.
You're going to play when you play.

Speaker 4 (13:05):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (13:05):
Yeah, you're frustrated. I get it. Sure, that happens. Whatever. Like,
all that stuff is there. Yeah, I thought that was,
I love the cuts in terms of how they went
about it. The one kid, the Jones kid, the running
back from Auburn, who didn't come back on the practice.
Everyone else was back on the practice. Like, if you're
just wondering.

Speaker 3 (13:23):
Right.

Speaker 1 (13:24):
Everybody else that they were cutting, they brought back except
for Jones. Right. And, But everybody else was back. Uso
making it was cool.

Speaker 2 (13:34):
That was cool.

Speaker 1 (13:34):
You know?

Speaker 3 (13:35):
That was cool.

Speaker 1 (13:35):
Practice squad. Practice squad's a lot better than it used
to be. I mean, you're making a minimum of $ 13, 000
a week. You can live on that. Decent.

Speaker 2 (13:43):
Decent chunk of change.

Speaker 1 (13:44):
Even in Seattle, you can live on that.

Speaker 2 (13:46):
But also, on the practice squad thought process, now, admittedly,
I don't know if this is that different from other
teams across the NFL. I don't follow them that closely
to know if that's kind of the... But the fact
that they emphasize this is a 70-man roster versus a
53-man roster is... It feels different. Again, I don't know

(14:06):
if it is that different.

Speaker 1 (14:07):
Well, and I'll tell you, it's different than when Pete
was here. Yeah. It was... I mean, they always refer...
It was practice squad, and you're.

Speaker 2 (14:13):
And, like, along with that, Him talking about, Mike McDonald
talking about at the beginning of the episode, how well
we don't coach people differently if they're starters or if
they're on the fringe of the rosters. We coach everybody up.
There's no hierarchy or anything like that. It just feels
like everyone's on the same page and on the same level.

Speaker 1 (14:31):
Well, I think you got that from the Cooper Cup.

Speaker 3 (14:33):
Exactly.

Speaker 1 (14:34):
Cooper Cup talking to the guys that were on the bubble.
And I think when Cooper was doing that, I'm trying
to think if it was Surratt was in there and
I think Hubbard. I forget who else, but I think
we listened to Cooper kind of explain how different. I
think that when you ask a question, I think the
answer is it is very different. Because as Cooper Cupp
said it, it's very different than any place else in
the league. I love when they're talking to Big Uso,

(14:58):
and he's like, we're going to coach you up. He's
got a ways to go. He's not close to being
an NFL player right now. But there's something there that
they see. It's a beautiful thing, too, about the practice squad.
In a league that doesn't have a minor league, and
stop it. Don't you dare text in that college football
is a minor league.

Speaker 5 (15:16):
It's not. It isn't.

Speaker 4 (15:18):
No.

Speaker 1 (15:18):
Because you're not developing for a specific team. Correct. Yes.
And your time runs out, whether it's four and four,
five and five, whatever, it runs out. You can't stash
a guy there until he's 28 and bring him up,
Brock Rodden style, whatever it is, right?

Speaker 4 (15:30):
Yeah. Seriously.

Speaker 1 (15:32):
You need the practice squad to truly– you can treat
it a number of different ways. The way Seattle treats
it is development. They're keeping Ricky White. Yeah. Ricky White's
going to be on the practice squad for a second year.
Ricky White III, the receiver out of UNLV. They see
something there. Mike said it and McDonald said it to him.
You're not there yet. We pay guys $ 40 million a year.
I need you to do other things. Yeah. Learn how

(15:54):
to do those things.

Speaker 3 (15:54):
Exactly.

Speaker 1 (15:55):
Right? So I think it is different now the more
I think about it. But yeah, it just came across
so well.

Speaker 2 (16:00):
And as someone, I had a very... opposite experience of
my own, not to the level of the NFL, obviously,
but when I was at Seattle U, I was on
the fringe of a roster there. We were a top
25 program. I was hell-bent on playing D1. Looking back,
I shouldn't have been that way. But as I was
on that roster, I was barely traveling, sometimes not traveling,

(16:21):
depending on who they took and stuff like that. And
it just kind of felt like, all right, you got
to work your own to get here. There wasn't an effort.
There was no development.

Speaker 3 (16:29):
Exactly.

Speaker 2 (16:30):
There wasn't an effort from the top, from the players,
from everywhere. to kind of get everyone up to speed
to be a part of this program. It's like either
you are do enough on your own to be a
part of this or you don't and see ya.

Speaker 1 (16:40):
Well, and you were at the forefront of how college
has changed totally in all sports because it used to
be in college football, you would develop guys. You would
redshirt them for a year. Then you would play them
a little bit on special teams your sophomore year. And
then you shoot to be a starter your junior and
senior year or your redshirt junior, whatever it might be, right?
But you can't develop guys in college anymore in any sport.

(17:02):
I bet it's worse in soccer now than it was
when you were there. Probably is. Because they're like, okay, well,
Anderson Hurst, he's all right. He's guy number 19 on
our roster. We've got a freshman class coming in, and
we can go out and get five transfers. They're not
developing guys, but the NFL can do that. I thought
that was a great match. And you can give us
your thoughts, 49451. I just thought Hard Knocks was great.

(17:24):
And I never thought we'd see our team on it.
Because the old rules were if you were in the
playoffs or you had a new coach or whatever, they
were in the playoffs almost every damn year. So now
that's changed too. So it was cool to see, really
cool to see along the way. 49451. All right, we'll
talk a little Mariners baseball. I hate to do this.

(17:45):
I'm going to say it, though. We're going to talk
lineups next.

Speaker 7 (17:51):
Now back to Ian Furness on your home for the Huskies, Kraken,
and the 12th man. Brought to you by Seattle's closest
Snoqualmie Casino and Hotel on Sports Radio 93.3 KJR FM.

Speaker 1 (18:04):
49451, that is the Tacoma Dodge text line. Anderson Hurst
with me today. Ian Furness with you until 3 p.m.
Nakamata College Football on the 1 o'clock, 2 o'clock hours.
Stuart Mandel, Alex Brink, and Crystal Bruce.

Speaker 4 (18:28):
Is it true?

Speaker 3 (18:29):
I saw this earlier. Is it true?

Speaker 1 (18:31):
DeMond Williams says he's being held hostage at Washington.

Speaker 3 (18:33):
Is that right?

Speaker 1 (18:34):
Blink twice if I'm being held hostage. I think somebody
dug up Softie's old tweets. That's what I was told
by a Coug fan was telling me this. I'm not
going to participate in your hijinks on the on the
X thread. Double Coug fans, you want to have fun
with him and DeMond and everything else. You guys go
ahead and do it. I got bigger fish to fly.

(18:54):
Like I said, I got a bigger problem with our
school right now. So I'll get to that later. Okay.
So I, I don't think it's humanly possible to have
had a better debut in major league baseball than our
guy Laz did last night. Yeah, no, not at all. Right.
Like I, is it correct me if I'm wrong? That's,
It's about as good as it gets, I think.

Speaker 2 (19:16):
It's the last time a Mariners player has made a
debut and had two hits, let alone a home run,
just two hits since Ichiro's debut in 2001.

Speaker 4 (19:28):
Wow.

Speaker 1 (19:29):
Okay, and youngest guy to hit a home run in
his major league debut as well.

Speaker 4 (19:33):
Right.

Speaker 1 (19:37):
There's a couple of questions that we need to ask.
Let me start with this one.

Speaker 4 (19:43):
Okay.

Speaker 1 (19:44):
Kind of like Kate Anderson. Why do we wait? Now, again,
it's one game.

Speaker 2 (19:53):
And you can always say like, oh, us waiting until
now made sure he was ready. And if we had
brought him up earlier, he may have not had that debut.

Speaker 4 (20:01):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (20:01):
I would argue that the three weeks really wouldn't make
that much of a difference.

Speaker 3 (20:04):
And I would agree.

Speaker 1 (20:04):
And when you're in a race for the playoffs, you
need to exhaust all resources and things, right? Yeah. Okay,
that's the only negative. The positive is this. The kid
obviously has a lot of juice. He has juice. Like,
he got the most lethargic, emotionally dead team in Major

(20:25):
League Baseball, and he had the dugout humming. But he's
not playing today. Neither is Cal, by the way.

Speaker 5 (20:36):
Right.

Speaker 1 (20:36):
Who's your hottest hitter?

Speaker 4 (20:37):
Well.

Speaker 1 (20:38):
Cal's an interesting... That's an interesting case study. He's got
a lot of one-for-fives, one-for-fours, one-for-fives with a home run
mixed in there.

Speaker 4 (20:47):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (20:47):
Double yesterday.

Speaker 4 (20:48):
That's true.

Speaker 1 (20:49):
But he's... Here's the thing. Cal's got at least some
confidence and momentum back.

Speaker 2 (20:55):
That's scorching compared to what he was doing before. He's
raised his batting average 14 points.

Speaker 1 (21:01):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (21:01):
His OPS is almost 100 by now.

Speaker 1 (21:03):
So... You didn't come back and play at 10 a.m.
It's a 4 p.m. game there.

Speaker 3 (21:12):
I don't get it.

Speaker 1 (21:13):
I know the left-hander. Sandoval's pitching, right?

Speaker 4 (21:15):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (21:16):
Okay.

Speaker 2 (21:17):
He's not some dominant Garrett Crochet, Tarek Skubal type.

Speaker 1 (21:20):
Well, neither was Max Scherzer. Well, the ghost and frauding
carcass of what was formerly Max Scherzer was. Yeah, I know.
Maybe they'll go out and maybe Bryce Miller won't be
awful today and maybe they'll win a game and they'll
win a series and you're going to feel a lot
better about this team.

Speaker 2 (21:37):
Maybe Weston Wilson has the hit that you need.

Speaker 1 (21:41):
Well, you know who's rooting for that. I know you are.
I am the king of the Weston Wilson fan club, baby. Oh, man.

Speaker 3 (21:47):
But you know why?

Speaker 1 (21:48):
The Wilson thing is this. Weston Wilson, that is.

Speaker 2 (21:52):
Not Dan Wilson.

Speaker 4 (21:53):
No.

Speaker 1 (21:53):
I think Weston Wilson is just the poster child for
the 2026 Mariners. If you were going to write the story,
if Michael Sean Dugar was going to write the book
like he just did with the Seahawks, you might have
Weston Wilson on the cover because that might describe what
your season has been. If you're not going to have
him on the cover, put Ref Snyder on there. That's
just roster construction problems. But they get the win yesterday.

(22:19):
They get a bonus because the White Sox beat the Astros.
So you're now only five games out of first place,
only five and a half games out of the wild card.
Still got a long ways to go the rest of
the season. I'm just still amazed. I'm going to keep
saying this over and over again, Anders. They still need
17 wins in the final month to get to 82

(22:43):
and have a winning record. 16 gives you a 500 record.
Now the question is, we don't know, but can you
get in the playoffs with a 500 record? Not in
the wild card, you're not. I don't think you're going
to have every team. And if, you know, for no
other reason, a lot of those teams, especially in the Central,
are going to play each other.

Speaker 3 (23:00):
Exactly.

Speaker 1 (23:01):
You'll have, somebody's going to rack up some wins. You're
probably going to need, what would be the projection right now?
Probably like 83, 84 to get the wild card.

Speaker 3 (23:08):
Wild card, yes.

Speaker 1 (23:09):
Right. So this is really all about the division right now. And,
you know, yesterday was big. To come out after what
happened the night before and to have a nice little offensive,
you know, they tied it one after one. You're like,
oh God. And then they just got off.

Speaker 4 (23:23):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (23:24):
Last I checked, let me check. Randy Rosarena again, correct?

Speaker 2 (23:28):
Good player.

Speaker 1 (23:28):
Yeah, good player.

Speaker 2 (23:30):
But all of a sudden, it's just a foregone conclusion
that he's not coming back next year.

Speaker 1 (23:33):
Well, because you're not going to pay for him.

Speaker 3 (23:35):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (23:37):
I can see why people draw that conclusion.

Speaker 2 (23:39):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (23:40):
Are they going to invest? And how old is Randy?

Speaker 8 (23:43):
31.

Speaker 1 (23:44):
It's kind of in their defense.

Speaker 2 (23:52):
I wouldn't do it.

Speaker 1 (23:53):
Yeah, in their defense, it's a little bit... What I said,
and we talked about this, you and I talked about
this on the show a lot in July, I would
have traded him. I would have traded him because.

Speaker 2 (24:04):
That's the ultimate white flag on the season, though.

Speaker 1 (24:06):
Other teams have traded guys and are still in the
playoff hunt. Let me point to you my friends in Toronto,
for example. But they're not trading their best offensive player.
But is their best offensive player going to walk? That's
the thing. And at 31, what's he going to want?
Like a Five-year deal? At least.

Speaker 2 (24:25):
I'd say five years, 100.

Speaker 1 (24:27):
You're already sunk into, God, now I'm defending the team.
Let me defend these guys. But seriously, you sunk yourself
into the Josh Naylor contract, and that has not aged well. No,
it has not. And I'm going to guess, I could
be wrong, but if it's not aging well in year one,
I'm guessing years two, three, four, and five, it may not.

Speaker 3 (24:43):
Age well either. Probably not.

Speaker 1 (24:45):
Right?

Speaker 4 (24:45):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (24:47):
I mean, the J.P. Crawford's contract, you're getting out of
that from this year, but that hasn't aged well the
last two years. Maybe three. And so I can see
them in that regard. But Randy's carrying this team offensively.
Good for him.

Speaker 3 (24:59):
Let's get back to Laz.

Speaker 5 (25:00):
Wow.

Speaker 1 (25:00):
Fun. Like, worth the price of admission to go watch
this monster play this weekend.

Speaker 2 (25:06):
And he just, it looks like he has fun.

Speaker 1 (25:08):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (25:08):
Well, okay.

Speaker 1 (25:09):
Is there some Julio, early Julio?

Speaker 2 (25:11):
There is. Yes, there is. 100% there is.

Speaker 1 (25:13):
God, don't suck it out of him, please. I mean,
Julio's happy when he's spinning discs and DJing and stuff.
But no, you know what I'm saying?

Speaker 2 (25:21):
And I love that about Julio.

Speaker 1 (25:22):
I do too.

Speaker 2 (25:22):
When he's playing well, that stuff is great, right? That's
a big if.

Speaker 1 (25:27):
Well, I feel like there's been far too many times
this season we haven't seen the old Julio. We've seen
him with a perplexed look on his face, the lack
of concentration, all those things. Lack of confidence. Lack of confidence.
His defense has gone into the toilet.

Speaker 3 (25:41):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (25:42):
But yeah, Laz has... It's kind of cool because... the
sports that you have, development guys, it's really cool to
see guys that come up and, wait for it, develop. Now,
he's one game in. One game in. But that one
game was really special, Anders.

Speaker 2 (26:02):
Yeah, it was, and it was something that we hadn't
seen before. First of all, if we're just talking straight
up what happened on those two plays, the walk in
his first at-bat, everyone was so afraid he was going
to strike out a bunch, and he shows incredible plate discipline.

Speaker 1 (26:15):
Really good, really good.

Speaker 2 (26:16):
Took a couple really good pitches, and yeah, he's going
to swing and miss a bunch, but when he connects...
It looked like, on his home run, that looked like
it was going to be a meager pop-out to center field.
The way he almost slapped at it. And it went
dead center.

Speaker 1 (26:31):
In that ballpark. In that ballpark. That doesn't happen in
that ballpark.

Speaker 3 (26:33):
No, it does not.

Speaker 1 (26:35):
He didn't even get all of it. You can get
balls to the wall in that ballpark, but usually you
need the center fielder to misplay.

Speaker 6 (26:40):
Right.

Speaker 1 (26:40):
That's usually what happens. To get it over the wall
is really something else. You can do that.

Speaker 2 (26:45):
But, yeah, he's special. And Chris has always been on this, so...
props to him for, you know, uh, being, being the
best prospect guy that I know. It's just, I don't
know when I see that, you know, it's a left-handed
pitcher and you want him to kind of have a
soft landing, so to speak, and, you know, have success
early so we can gain some confidence, all that stuff.

(27:07):
I understand that, but we're not at the point where
we can start thinking about that right now. You have
to play your best players, period, end of story. It's,
September 2nd. And the season ends in less than a month.
And you're benching two of your best guys when you
need to win a series.

Speaker 1 (27:22):
What do you have, 23 games left?

Speaker 4 (27:23):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (27:23):
Is there a margin of error?

Speaker 4 (27:24):
No.

Speaker 1 (27:25):
I didn't think so. 49451 in the Tacoma Dutch text line.
We will come back. Wrap up hour number one before
we flip over to a little college football. Stu Mandel
joins us for his weekly visit at 1 o'clock. We'll
talk about the college weekend coming up. This is week one,
not week zero. Week zero was last week. By the way,
this is the last week zero.

Speaker 3 (27:42):
Did you know that?

Speaker 1 (27:43):
They're getting rid of the whole week zero designation next year.

Speaker 2 (27:46):
Was it an official name?

Speaker 1 (27:48):
I don't know, buddy. And that'll probably change between now
and next September anyway, too. We'll have Mandel at 1 o'clock,
Cougs at 2, all on 93.3 KJRFM.

Speaker 7 (28:01):
Now back to Ian Furness on your home for the Huskies, Kraken,
and the 12th man. Brought to you by Seattle's closest
Snoqualmie Casino and Hotel on Sports Radio 93.3 KJR FM.
All right, we're.

Speaker 1 (28:17):
Back here on a Wednesday afternoon. Seven days away. The
countdown is on for the start of the NFL season.
Seahawks-Patriots rematch of the Super Bowl, the last game played
last year, the first game played this year. Meanwhile, the 49ers,
looks like they're getting healthier. They're leaving today. Crazy. The

(28:40):
Rams are kind of in this weird secret, I don't
know if you've heard the mode that McVay's in, kind
of his little, you know, I don't know if I'm
going to go down yet. But they're going down. Everyone's
got their own sports science staff. Everyone has their own
group that dictates and decides where they're, you know, how to,

(29:01):
how you do things.

Speaker 2 (29:01):
Their own way of doing things.

Speaker 6 (29:02):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (29:02):
And you saw that like Sam Ramston was, was prominently
featured a number of times in Hard Knocks. He oversees
all the performance side of, for the Seahawks. That includes
the training staff, the medical training staff with David and
McKenzie and that group. And then Ivan and the strength
staff over there. It's amazing what they do. Everyone's got
a GPS in there, whether it's in the sports bra

(29:25):
they wear or in their pads these days. It tracks everything.
They come off the field. They take the little QR
thing or whatever, the little code, the little deal, and
they put it in the thing, and they look at it,
and they figure all this stuff. And so they have
all this stuff dialed in, like when to go down.
It is interesting that you have two very different philosophies
for that game down under with the Niners and the Rams.

(29:46):
I also love the fact that it's a Rams home game,
and they bailed on having the San Francisco play at home.
That just tells you all you need to know about L.A.
We talked about that yesterday with Len, the whole who's
the best sports towns. All I need to know is that.
I don't think you can be ranked in the top
10 of any ranking by anybody, any time, if you

(30:09):
are afraid to play a home NFL game because other
fans are going to come to your stadium. And the
thing is, they have two NFL teams and both have
the same problem. Now, the Chargers is the worst problem.

Speaker 3 (30:19):
It's worse, yeah.

Speaker 1 (30:20):
But the fact that the Rams won, they could have,
like Lunn said, they could have picked a lot of opponents,
and they picked the 49ers because they didn't want 49er fans.
And you know who would have been number two on
the list? It would have been Seattle. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (30:33):
The Seahawks fans would go down there.

Speaker 1 (30:34):
Yes, sir. Yeah. Just a bunch of tools, these guys.
I mean, goodness me.

Speaker 2 (30:39):
I'm kind of coming over to your side because I
used to be much more Niner hate than Ram hate,
and I know you are much more Ram hate than
Niner hate. I'm starting to come over to the Ram hate.
In terms of the biggest rivalry.

Speaker 1 (30:52):
I mean, I don't like either one of them.

Speaker 3 (30:53):
I don't either.

Speaker 1 (30:54):
I really don't like either one of them.

Speaker 3 (30:55):
Obviously, yes.

Speaker 1 (30:56):
But, and really, I'd almost, this year, every year can
be a little bit different.

Speaker 4 (31:02):
Sure.

Speaker 1 (31:03):
This year's different because Aaron Donald, Miles Garrett, McDuffie Watson.
I do like the fact that they have pressure on
them to the point of, you guys better go 17-0,
16-1 and win the damn Super Bowl. Because if you don't,
it's been an unsuccessful season.

Speaker 2 (31:19):
I would love for them to lose that first game.

Speaker 1 (31:22):
God, I would love that. I would too. Let me
caution one thing.

Speaker 5 (31:28):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (31:29):
49ers won a road game in week one last year
against NFC West. They did. That would have been here.

Speaker 3 (31:33):
Last I checked.

Speaker 2 (31:34):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (31:35):
And in a game that I didn't like because– we
had the audio playing for a while. I mean, I
was critical of McDonald and Kubiak in that game. I
thought that they kind of were a little passive offensively,
and that's not who they are. And I bet if
you put the old Hugh Mill and True Serum in
Mike McDonald, he would agree.

Speaker 4 (31:52):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (31:53):
But, I mean, they played tough guy football. They didn't
play tough guy football that day.

Speaker 4 (31:57):
Right.

Speaker 1 (31:58):
But the Rams or the Seahawks lost to them last year,
and the 49ers won that first road game, and then
we all know what happened after that. Now, in fairness
to the 49ers, then they had catastrophic injuries throughout the
rest of the season. Because one of the reasons they
won is their pass rusher bulldozed Abe Lucas, forced a fumble,
and last I checked, that guy missed most of the
rest of the season. And then Kittle gets hurt. I mean,
Purdy was hurt for a while. The whole– everything was–

(32:20):
the only guy that really wasn't hurt last year was McCaffrey.

Speaker 2 (32:22):
Right, which is weird.

Speaker 1 (32:24):
Well, but then if you want to look at– I
do believe that– I think Len told us this. I
haven't looked at it myself, so I'm going to trust–
I'm not going to– I'll fact check it maybe in
a break, but Len has told us this. McCaffrey– with
the number of touches he had last year in back-to-back seasons,
the second season doesn't always go as well. True. That's
a little tip for you guys in fantasy football from
the guy that finished last last year in his league.

(32:46):
That would be me. Did you get the picture, by
the way? Did I send you the picture?

Speaker 9 (32:51):
No.

Speaker 1 (32:51):
Oh, I think I just sent it to maybe Jess
and Funster.

Speaker 3 (32:54):
What picture?

Speaker 1 (32:55):
We had our Board of Governors meeting. Oh, yes, I
did get that one. God.

Speaker 2 (32:59):
That was great. Gong show?

Speaker 3 (33:01):
Stupid-y.

Speaker 2 (33:02):
Just stupid-y.

Speaker 1 (33:04):
We'll talk more about that. Funston, by the way, tomorrow
will join us at 2 o'clock.

Speaker 3 (33:08):
As always.

Speaker 1 (33:08):
And I think we've kind of gone through the big
position groups. So with Funston tomorrow, let's talk. Let's get
your feedback tomorrow. Let's get your phone calls.

Speaker 4 (33:17):
Yep.

Speaker 1 (33:18):
Let's get your texts. And we'll kind of leave it
up to you because have you done your drafts?

Speaker 4 (33:22):
Not yet.

Speaker 2 (33:23):
We have ours on Monday.

Speaker 1 (33:24):
Okay. So we'll get your thoughts tomorrow, your questions, your thoughts,
if you've already had a draft. great if you need
draft strategy keepers trades all that have you done yours
no we uh we have my first with the the
gong show league is after the after it's they wait
for me once i can get home on monday because
i'm the only guy out of 11 there's 12 of

(33:46):
us in the league there's 11 of us don't work
me i am working you're the one that's working so
as soon as i can navigate through seattle traffic hopefully
won't be bad on a monday we get we usually
do around 4 30 or so on mondays on labor
day and then uh And then the second one is
on Tuesday. So the old man league, old man league
is on Tuesday. So that's, yeah, I have never done
mock drafts before. doing it right now wow not as

(34:10):
we speak but the last two nights games are over
nothing on tv i'm like be grinding through and and
i don't like any of the things that have come
out of.

Speaker 2 (34:19):
That so far so that's why you get your strategy.

Speaker 1 (34:22):
If you guys enjoyed having uh the idiots in here
last year doing uh doing my show get ready to
lose again good root for you to lose again because
uh big sexy and the boys will be rolling back
in here with cliff clavin and everybody else so It
should be fun. All right. We come back. We're going
to hear from Stuart Mandel. We're going to talk a
little college football in the next couple of hours. Mandel
is going to join us. Fun weekend in college football

(34:42):
coming up. Yes, the Apple Cup is one thing. Clemson
LSU has got a lot going on with that game.
We'll talk about that and so much more next.

Speaker 7 (34:53):
Now, from the Star Runnels Sports Desk, your 93.3 KKRFM
Sports Headlines.

Speaker 1 (34:59):
Brought to you by Frostbrood Coors Light. Cold as the Rockies. Mariners,
one game two of their series against the Red Sox.
They had a five-game skid last night. Laz Montes, two hits,
including a home run in his debut. Youngest Mariner, he
had a home run in his Major League debut. Anders
tells me he's the first guy to debut with two
hits in his Major League debut with the Mariners since.

Speaker 3 (35:19):
Ichiro.

Speaker 1 (35:19):
Heard he was good.

Speaker 4 (35:20):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (35:21):
He's not starting today, though.

Speaker 2 (35:22):
Itro isn't?

Speaker 1 (35:23):
No, and Itro isn't, Cal isn't, and Montez isn't. Oh, weird.
Not really. Not when you think about it. Both George
Kittle and Nick Bosa are expected to make the trip
to Australia and have a shot to play Week 1
versus the Rams. They're leaving today. Vikings expect J.J. McCarthy
to be on the Week 1 roster. Penn State has
announced it's opening the Paternal Family Football Experience Room in
the All-Sports Museum inside Beaver Stadium on Thursday. It will

(35:45):
celebrate Penn State's football history. Apparently good and bad.

Speaker 2 (35:48):
Yeah, sure. You think they're going to put anything bad
in there?

Speaker 1 (35:52):
Sandusky involved? I don't think so. Ellie Tolvanen is now
a New York Ranger. Former Seattle Kraken, four years here.
Nice little tenure. Probably never lived up to anything, including
his first-round selection, but gave the Kraken some good hockey.
They chose not to sign him. He goes to the Rangers.
Good for him.

Speaker 2 (36:10):
Rangers like themselves some former Kraken.

Speaker 1 (36:12):
They do, man. They do. And, frankly, so do the
Kraken like some former Rangers.

Speaker 4 (36:16):
That's true.

Speaker 1 (36:17):
Lindgren, Koppel. Let's just go through the list. Anyway, should
we talk some college football? Is it time to get
into some college football, ladies and gentlemen? Here he is
for the first time this season. It is our good buddy,
Stuart Mandel. And big thanks to our friends that have
a new sponsor for Stuart Mandel.

Speaker 3 (36:35):
Here we go.

Speaker 7 (36:36):
Now back to Ian Furness on your home for the Huskies, Kraken,
and the 12th man. Brought to you by Seattle's closest
Snoqualmie Casino and Hotel on Sports Radio 93.3 KJR FM.

Speaker 1 (36:51):
All right, welcome back in. Sports Radio 93.3 KJF, Andy
Infernoff's with you, and we are on the verge, the
cusp of, I would say, college football starting, but we
had week zero games last week, and frankly, I mean,
I enjoyed some of those games. Hell, I enjoyed Friday
Night Lights. Stuart Mandel joining us right now. I enjoyed
Friday Night Cal Poly Idaho Big Sky After Dark. Stuart,

(37:14):
that's how sick I am in these days. How are you,
my friend?

Speaker 7 (37:19):
I'm good.

Speaker 5 (37:19):
I was glad to watch some games this past weekend,
but really looking forward to this full slate this weekend.

Speaker 1 (37:25):
I can't wait. We've had a long offseason, and there's
been a lot of stuff that had nothing to do
with the games on the field, although I guess they
do have ramifications. But it's all about college football, and
this is brought to you by Absolute Auto Body, from

He is the editor-in-chief of the Athletics College Football Coverage,

(38:12):
National College Football Writer for two decades. and also the
co-host of the Audible podcast with Bruce Feldman. Happy to
have him back again this season. Stuart, I want to
do just one quick off-field thing, and we'll just kind
of move on. Rosters have to be set by when,
and where does LSU stand with its roster? Because it
feels like that's the only program that's still waiting to
figure out if they want to bring these guys in

(38:33):
that were somewhat NFL players, at least in camps.

Speaker 5 (38:37):
Yeah, so LSU's got a few guys who are practicing
with them right now. They have until Friday to actually
say whether or not they're part of the roster. And
there's this hearing in Louisiana on Thursday in that case
where the judge will decide whether to do things, whether
to give the plaintiff's preliminary injunction. Also, if the SEC,

(39:01):
if he rules against the NCAAs, it's still also possible.
ruling against the SEC. Is he saying the SEC can't
enforce that rule that it just put into place on
guys coming back from the NFL? Whatever he does, it's
just this game of chicken right now. Is LSU really
going to play these guys? You don't have to play them.

(39:23):
Just put them on the roster knowing that if uh,
that sec, uh, rule ultimately gets upheld down the road,
Lane Kiffin facing a half season suspension.

Speaker 4 (39:35):
Wow.

Speaker 1 (39:37):
He likes to skirt the, I mean, he likes to
skirt the rules. I think you wrote about your mailbag,
some of the stuff he's done over the years. you know,
with different things. The Cody Kessler thing with the punter,
I didn't realize they did that before. Didn't Lincoln Riley
do that a couple years ago, too? In fact, I
know he did it with Sam Huard, who was the
kid from up here, the former five-star that.

Speaker 3 (39:57):
Really never played.

Speaker 5 (39:58):
Yeah, I think they did that last year. You're right.

Speaker 1 (40:01):
Yeah, so it's like, that must just be a, I
don't know if that's a Lane Kiffin thing or a
USC thing, but yeah, the whole thing stinks. When Sark
turns against you, his buddy Sark, basically, doesn't that tell
you all you need to know, Lane? Like, maybe just
back off?

Speaker 5 (40:16):
And it's just it's universal in the SEC. We saw
Tennessee's chancellor come out publicly yesterday, very strident that they're
going to enforce that rule. We've heard it from ADs.
It's very similar, frankly, to the vibe in the Big
12 last summer when Texas Tech looked like it was
going to plow ahead with Brendan Sorsby, where it became
very clear it was 15 against one. That's exactly what's

(40:39):
happening in the SEC right now.

Speaker 1 (40:41):
Stuart Mandel joining us. Did you learn anything from the so-called,
whatever you want to call it, the week zero? Did
you learn anything? USC, an easy handling of San Jose State.
Stanford comes back and holds off Hawaii when it's all
said and done. I don't know if it's truly over
for UNLV as a group of six college football playoff hope,
but losing to Memphis was not a good situation at home.

(41:03):
What were any of your takeaways from the week zero
games last week?

Speaker 5 (41:08):
I thought the best-looking team, the most impressive team, was Virginia,
who a lot of people have been waiting to see
whether last year was a one-off when they won 11 games,
and a lot of those were down-to-the-wire games. They won
three overtime games, so very significant that they came out
in a conference game in the opener and just blew
out NC State. Good sign for them. With UNC-TCU, congratulations

(41:35):
to UNC. It didn't significantly change my opinion of them.
But it was a really rough start for TCU. They've
been putting a lot of hope on their new quarterback,
Jaden Craig from Harvard. And he just looked like a
deer in headlights. He could not handle UNC's pressure. They
have a new offensive coordinator there as well. And we

(41:55):
talked about this on the Audible, like move to more
of an NFL type offense than the wide open offense
that Tony Dykes has run in the past. And, you know,
I'm not going to declare it dead after one game,
but it was not a great start.

Speaker 1 (42:08):
No, and TCU's got so many things going on right
now off the field as well. The battle with the
one media member that covers them on a daily basis
is a beat writer. The assault, or actually that's what
it was, an assault in the locker room. Yeah, TCU
has some issues. Let's look ahead. Stuart Mandel with us.
I want to jump ahead to Friday. An interesting game

(42:30):
only in the sense that it's a conference game. ACC
will have had two conference games played before the majority
of the country starts It's season because, of course, the
Virginia game ended up being a conference game with NC State.
So Virginia, the oldest team in the history of college football,
maybe gets that win. And then Miami and Stanford play
Friday as well. They play that on the farm. It's Stanford.

(42:51):
Maybe there'll be more than 55 people there, which is
what the attendance, I think, was on last weekend for Hawaii. Miami,
of course, we know what they did last season, but
they're breaking in a new quarterback. uh, as well. How
do you see, do you see Stanford hanging at all
with these guys? Or do you think Miami is just
going to come in and pick up where they left
off last year?

Speaker 5 (43:11):
Hard to see Stanford hanging with Miami. Um, cause I
think Miami's offense will be even better. Now they have
Darian Mensah, the quarterback, Carson Beck had a ceiling, Darian Mensah,
both at Tulane and Duke was outstanding, big production, um,
very few interceptions, um, And I just, I don't, and
then you have Malachi Tony, one of the best freshmen

(43:31):
in the country last year. They brought in along with
Darren Mensah and it's like 11th hour heist. They got
his receiver from Duke Cooper, who was a thousand yard receiver.
And Stanford just doesn't have those kinds of athletes on defense.
You know, they, they looked good for much of the
game against Hawaii. And then suddenly Hawaii had three states,
three straight touchdown drives. You know, I, I don't, I

(43:53):
don't love my, I mean, I don't love Stanford's chances.
The only thing, You could point to is shortly for,
I mean, Miami coming out on a Friday night going
across the country. But, of course, it's not like they
had a game last week. So, yeah, I don't even
think really they have that to hang their hat on.

Speaker 1 (44:12):
You guys, I know, brought this up on the Audible.
I think you've written about it too. I know there's
some that are like, well, there's just not enough out
there as far as week one is concerned. It's compelling.
And I always kind of say to myself, if you're
a college football fan, and you look at any weekend
starting with week one, and even hell, week zero, we
just talked about a bunch of games, and you can't
find a handful of games that you want to watch

(44:33):
that you think are fun and compelling for whatever reason. Stuart,
I hate when people complain about that stuff. We've got
college football. We've got enough issues with college football. We
have actual games this weekend. There's a bunch more I
want to hit on, but I'll let you riff on
that for a second because me personally, I can pick
out at least seven, eight, nine games that I want
to watch this weekend.

Speaker 5 (44:54):
Yeah, I mean, look, would I rather there be more
marquee week one games? Absolutely. And I think it's an
unfortunate trend that we're actually seeing it go in the
opposite direction and schools canceling some of those home and homes. But, yeah,
I think this isn't week nine and you're like, oh, man,
it's kind of a quiet week. We've been waiting eight
months for this.

Speaker 4 (45:12):
Yes.

Speaker 5 (45:13):
And we're getting college football Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday.
And inevitably, some of the games that you don't think
twice about will end up being great games. There will
be upsets. I mean, really, that's the beauty of this sport.
You know, you wake up on a typical weekend. You
wake up on Saturday morning. You turn on the games
at 9 a.m. And you know that by the end
of the night, by the time you go to bed,

(45:33):
there will be things you never imagined would happen that happen, right?
And I couldn't tell you what those are going to be. But,
you know, maybe it's Wisconsin. Somebody asked me, what's the
best chance of a top-10 team losing to an unranked opponent?
And it's probably Notre Dame against Wisconsin, who I think
is going to be much improved. I could also see
it going completely the other way, but there will be

(45:55):
something like that that nobody saw coming.

Speaker 1 (45:58):
Let me just start with the game on Saturday. This
is a bigger picture question. Boise State at Oregon, it's
a big spread. It's 24.5 spread with the Broncos going
to Oregon. A lot of folks believe that Boise State
could be and is maybe one of the two or three, well,
not a lot of folks believe. I think it's true
that most would be the consensus is that Boise State's

(46:18):
one of the three or four teams that has the
best chance to get to the college football playoff as
a group of six representative. I don't like Maddox Madsen
as a quarterback necessarily. I know you like the running
backs at Boise State. Oregon ranked number two in the country.
We know they got to scare a couple of years
ago from Boise State, but they had some kid named
Jenty that was running the ball. So it's a little
bit different Boise State team, but maybe bigger picture and

(46:41):
then into that game. Is this one of those situations
where we can truly see you now where the The
threshold is, the line is being drawn in the sand
in terms of the power for conferences and the group
of six conference teams, because it used to be Boise
State would give every team in every power conference a scare.
They were the Gonzaga of college football. Is this going

(47:02):
to be one of those barometer games where we really
kind of see it up close and personal how far
apart these programs may be?

Speaker 5 (47:09):
Yeah, definitely, because we happened to have two years ago
this exact matchup. The year Oregon ended up going 13-0,
and Boise State ended up going to the playoff. And
that was a last-second, down-to-the-wire game, Ashton Gentry playing for Boise.
And frankly, that's how Boise tied in the playoff. It
kind of became the biggest notch on their resume all

(47:30):
year was they almost beat Oregon. They almost beat the
number one team. In fact, if you remember, they were
actually pretty high in the committee's ranking. So here they
go to... Years later, obviously, they're not the same teams.
But Oregon is Oregon. Boise doesn't have an action gentee.
If Oregon blows them out this time, yes, that would
tell me that a lot has changed in two years

(47:51):
in terms of the separation between the top of the
group of six teams and the power core. Now, maybe
that's an unfair thing to put on one team and
one game. And certainly, like you mentioned earlier, Memphis looked
really good over the weekend. There will be other G6
contenders besides Boise. But this is an opportunity and a

(48:13):
big spot for Boise to kind of carry the flag
for the rest of the G6.

Speaker 1 (48:18):
Yeah, Memphis goes to Boise State, too, in a couple weeks.
That's going to be a massive game in terms of
the the college football playoffs, and that front four for
Memphis is scary good. I mean, that's a power forefront four. Boise,
like I said, with Madsen, I mean, he's 18-9 in
terms of touchdowns, interceptions. A 2-1 rate's not what you like,
but he's an experienced senior, so probably won't be intimidated
going in there. We'll see what happens with that. Stuart Mandel,

Body for bringing us Stuart Mandel this week. All right,

(49:02):
other games going on. Obviously, the marquee game, the one
everyone's talking about on Saturday night, is going to be Clemson-LSU. Stuart,
it's safe to say LSU's had a nice, quiet offseason.
Dabo Sweeney has nothing to say about college football these
days or what LSU might be doing. Feels like both
teams are somewhat distracted. yet at the same time. 4.30
on ABC, man, I can't wait to watch this thing.

Speaker 5 (49:25):
Yeah, and you know, for all the talk about LSU
and all the discussion, You just really don't know when
it's a new coach and a new team, what they're
going to look like. And there's no question that the
portal class Lane Kiffin brought in was frankly like a
portal all-star team. It was Sam Levitt, you know, who

(49:46):
was the quarterback of a big 12 championship team at ASU.
Jordan Seaton, the tackle from Colorado is probably going to
be high first round draft pick. Just, just right on
down the line guys who were top or close to
the top ranked player at their position. And so talent wise,
I don't have many concerns about LSU, but it's not

(50:07):
as simple as, you know, you just roll out the ball,
new head coach, new staff, completely new culture. They could
come out and enroll. They could come out and look, um,
a little sloppy. And then for Clemson, the interesting thing
there is like, uh, what did I just see? They've lost.
They're the only power 14 that's lost to, uh, That

(50:28):
can't be right. Anyway, we've seen them mess up in
this spot. Georgia, they got blown out a couple years ago.
They lost a home to LSU last year. This will
be the first time, I think, where there's just no expectation.
Boston had a bad year last year. People feel like
they're slipping under Dabo, myself included. We're expecting them to
go into LSU and win, or frankly, even stay close.

(50:51):
So if they can pull that off, that would be
big for Dabo.

Speaker 1 (50:53):
Yeah, I think Dabo, too. It doesn't help. This is
a weird thing for me to say, but it doesn't
help Dabo that the quarterback that going into last season
that he had in Cade Klubnick was a highly thought-of
draft prospect, seemed to regress throughout the season, is a
non-factor on draft weekend for the NFL, and just had
a hell of a preseason in training camp. He's a No.
2 quarterback in the NFL team right now. So, Dabo,

(51:15):
what are you doing there, buddy? There's got to be
a lot of questions for him, right?

Speaker 4 (51:19):
A lot of questions.

Speaker 5 (51:20):
Yeah, I believe they had a school record. Don't quote
me on this, but a school record draft picks last year.
If it wasn't draft picks, it was first three rounds.
That's what it was. School record, first three rounds. And
you're thinking, are you serious? Like all those greats, Trevor Lawrence,
Travis Etienne, Christian Wilkins, Hunter Renfro, like this last year's

(51:43):
team that went seven and six had more than those
teams did. That tells you something has really gone wrong.
I know everybody likes to say, well, it's because they
didn't buy into the transfer portal. Well, that was true
at first, but they have transfers on that team. The
bigger problem is what's going on with the players that
they already have there.

Speaker 1 (52:03):
No doubt. Stuart Mandel joining us from The Athletic. What
are you hearing out of Michigan with Kyle Whittingham? He's
making his debut as a Michigan coach on Saturday. First
of all, for me to say that, it just feels
and sounds weird coming out of my mouth. Kyle Whittingham,
the head coach at Michigan, They play, they have a
pretty easy task against Western Michigan at four 30 on Saturday,
but what, what, what's the word? What are you guys

(52:24):
hearing around the country about what Kyle's got going on
at Michigan?

Speaker 5 (52:28):
I think there's people are pretty high on the roster
in general. And then it just really comes down to
how do you feel about Bryce Underwood? Five-star quarterback who
was really underwhelming as a true freshman. And then in
the spring game kind of looked the same. Now, you
can't read too much into spring games, obviously. And he's

(52:49):
got a new, not just head coach, but a new
offensive coordinator, um, who came from Utah and did a
great job with Devin Dampier last year. So I think if,
if Bryce Underwood, he doesn't even have to look like
a Heisman winner, but if he shows he's much better
than he was last year, then they absolutely have the
chance to contend for a playoff. The problem is going

(53:10):
to be if you come out and a couple of
weeks in, you're like, Oh, this isn't going to work. Um, Actually,
CJ Carr's younger brother is the number two QB there
and looked better than Bryce Underwood in the spring game.
It would be interesting to see how quickly or not
quickly the fans would throw in the towel on their

(53:30):
hugely hyped freshman quarterback last year.

Speaker 1 (53:34):
Stu, let's get to Sunday. You mentioned it. We touched
on it. Wisconsin, Notre Dame. Wisconsin's showing some signs. This
is an interesting game, too, for folks wondering. It's in
Lambeau Field in Wisconsin, but because it's Notre Dame, the
crowd's going to be fun to see what it looks like.
As we look at this game, Wisconsin's defense... Feels like

(53:55):
it took massive steps forward. Husky fans will tell you
all about that because they destroyed DeMond Williams and Washington
last year. Notre Dame loses two running backs in the
first round. They've got an elite quarterback, though, and people
think Notre Dame might run the table this season. Is
there any chance for an upset here? It's a big spread,
but is there any chance for an upset with Wisconsin?

Speaker 5 (54:16):
Yeah, I mean, I think we're going to see, if
you remember about two-thirds of the way through the season
last year, Luke Bickle looked good as gone. And the
AD at the time, Chris McIntosh, who has since left
for a job with the Big Ten, surprised everybody saying, nope,
we're bringing him back. And basically he didn't say this
quite this way, right? But instead of throwing all this

(54:38):
money to buy out Luke Bickle, we're going to spend
it on our roster. We're going to significantly invest in
the roster in a way they hadn't before. And so
we're going to see if.

Speaker 3 (54:46):
That paid off.

Speaker 5 (54:48):
I do like the quarterback, Colton Joseph, from Old Dominion.
Good dual threat guy. I think you're going to start
to see them maybe have the kind of running game
they used to for all those years, but it's really
about the defense. It's not like they're bringing everybody back
from that defense that shut down Washington and several other
teams at the end. But they have two freshman linebackers

(55:10):
who blew up last year who are expected to be
very high-level players. So, yeah, I mean, I think Notre
Dame is loaded. I have them in the national championship
game myself. But, you know, I would say if Notre
Dame comes out and loses this game or just looks
really ugly, we're all going to say, oh, man, why

(55:31):
did we think they could lose two first-round running backs
and just carry on, right? Like, everybody's kind of minimizing
that because they have C.J. Carr and they have– fantastic defense,
but yeah, I'm really curious to see what the running
game looks like.

Speaker 1 (55:44):
I am too. If they do lose and people will
stop complaining about Notre Dame's schedule, maybe too, when it's
all said and done. Is Louisville-Ole Miss, on paper, it's
the best game this weekend, number nine Ole Miss, number
24 Louisville. Is that the best game this weekend, do
you think? Potentially?

Speaker 5 (56:01):
I mean, I'm still going to go with LSU-Clemson, but
I would say it's one of the more intriguing games
for two reasons. Louisville is kind of a dark horse
ACC contender. And Ole Miss has Trinidad Chambliss and Q1 Lacey, right?
Two of the biggest stars in the sport, especially Trinidad Chambliss.

(56:26):
But you don't know what that's going to look like
with a new coaching staff. Charlie West Jr. went with
Lane Kiffin to LSU, but remember, he was still the
OC and the play caller in the playoff when they
almost made the national championship game. So, I mean, could
I see Louisville pulling it off? Sure. But it's hard
to say that when you see what the mismatch right

(56:47):
now is a quarterback between Trinidad-Chamliss and Lincoln Kienholz, who
the only time we've ever seen him transfer from Ohio
State is when he got thrown into the fire in
the Cotton Bowl as a true freshman and really couldn't
do anything. But two years later, last season, by all indications,
it was neck and neck between him and Julian Sagan
for the QB1 there. So if that's the case, yeah,

(57:09):
you could see him coming out and and having a
great season. It's just we haven't seen him yet.

Speaker 1 (57:15):
The Trinidad-Chamberlain back and forth, is he eligible or is
he not? With all the other stuff going on in
college football, that feels like years ago that that was
taking place.

Speaker 5 (57:24):
That was a completely different issue, right? That was about
a medical redshirt. That was long before 5 for 5.

Speaker 1 (57:32):
That was way before that. Real quick, a final thought.
Washington State, Washington, Sunday, 1 o'clock, The traditional first game
of the year game between the Apple Cup opponents, Washington
State and Washington. Huskies will rank 17th. Jed Fish is
third year. DeMond Williams Jr. maybe being held hostage by
the Huskies, but he's back. He's there, whether he wants
to be or not. He is there at UW. They're

(57:54):
a heavy favorite. Wazoo, I'll be honest with you, Stu,
I have no idea. We have no idea what to expect.

Speaker 3 (58:00):
Kirby Moore.

Speaker 1 (58:00):
I love the defensive coordinator, Trent Bray. I think he's
a D coordinator. He's not a head coach, but It's
kind of the great unknown Washington State against a Washington
team that has high expectations. What are you thinking about
this game?

Speaker 5 (58:10):
You know, I was a little surprised that Washington was
ranked as high as they were in the polls. I
guess that's a bit of a projection and optimism that
they take the next step with DeMond Williams coming back.
But at the end of the day, they're upper half
of the Big Ten, you know, power four team. And

(58:31):
Washington State is, we don't know yet, no, but a
group of six teams. And it's just kind of reflective
of how much the world changed when the Pac-12 fell apart,
because obviously these were two very comparable programs that had
so many great games over the years. I don't know
what to expect from Washington State, but there's a reason.
I'm trying to say this without insulting you guys. No, no, no.

(58:57):
If Washington was playing Fresno State this week, we wouldn't
be like, well, let's see what we're going to get
from Fresno State. And that's kind of what Wazoo is now.

Speaker 1 (59:05):
Yeah, that's the reality of it. I mean, I'd love
to be saying something different. Sometimes the reality is what
it is.

Speaker 3 (59:11):
All right.

Speaker 1 (59:12):
Stu, you can reach Stuart Mandel at The Athletic, theathletic.com.
Just go to the College Football MCAAF. That's the College
Football tab. And they've got all kinds of great– the

which means Sunday morning, we will go live at 8.30 a.m.
Pacific on our YouTube channel, which is at Audible Show.
And then that will immediately go up as an audio
podcast as well. That's my favorite type of podcast to do. Live,
we have all these results to talk about. We will

(59:59):
definitely overreact one way or the other to some of
these teams' first performances, so please come join us.

Speaker 1 (01:00:05):
I love it. We'll talk to you next week, Stu.
Thank you so much. Have a great week one of

And he'll do that every week as he did last.
This will be our third year with Stuart when it's
all said and done. Love having him on. A lot
of guys out there to talk college football, but to

(01:00:56):
have the athletic senior writer host of the Audible podcast
is great. Huge shout-out to, let me just say this,
Troy and the group at Absolute Auto Body. Thank you
so much for bringing us Stuart Mandel this season. Excited
to have that every week, talking college football. AbsoluteAutobody.com if

(01:01:16):

Scratches and dings to major repairs. Trust the folks at
Absolute Auto Body for quality work at fair prices.

Speaker 3 (01:01:30):
All right.

Speaker 1 (01:01:32):
I'm going to say some things here, and I know
it's not going to be going over well with a
lot of Washington State fans. And I know you feel like, wow,
on this station, this should be the safe haven, especially
with a morning show that somehow identifies itself with the Huskies,
an afternoon show that are two Huskies. But I got

(01:01:54):
to get something off my chest. I'm just right now
really disappointed in our athletic department on a.

Speaker 3 (01:02:03):
Lot of levels.

Speaker 1 (01:02:07):
It started a couple weeks ago. Jim Walden, his service
was held in Coeur d'Alene, and there wasn't anybody in
the current athletic department that was there in an official
capacity to represent the school. There were people that were there,
longtime Cougs, that were just appalled by that. Someone needs

(01:02:28):
to go. Someone needed to be there. Jim Walden, not
only a former coach, but also a longtime broadcaster. Okay,
that was one thing.

Speaker 3 (01:02:36):
All right, we move on.

Speaker 1 (01:02:38):
By the way, I think in lieu of flowers that
they were asking for donations, the athletic fund or NIL fund.

Speaker 4 (01:02:43):
Really?

Speaker 1 (01:02:44):
You couldn't bother driving 90 miles? This whole thing this week,
we got an email. Greg brought this up in Crosstalk
on Monday. And Jeff Beck told us he supports information
director at Washington. And Initially, the Huskies weren't going to
put out a depth chart until Washington State did. The
whole thing is until other opponents do. If Oregon doesn't,

(01:03:05):
they're not. That kind of nonsense back and forth. First
of all, I think that's stupid, but what's dumber is
what I'm going to tell you. our school, which had
a narrative going out there, never really official, but they
never kind of countered it, that, hey, we can't bring
our band there because Washington won't let us in and

(01:03:26):
won't give us tickets, has now proven to be false.
That's embarrassing. Like, that's just embarrassing. If you want to say, hey,
it's not worth our time to go sit in the
upper deck, that's fine. But the whole thing initially was
they won't allow us to be there, whatever it is.
The stadium's been renovated. They're in the Big Ten. It's

(01:03:48):
the gone are the days of the little cheap bleacher
seats in the East End Zone where you used to
put them there, whatever, right? It's in the track out there,
the moat and everything. It's a different world. If you
don't want to go because you don't like the seats,
which from all accounts, from what I'm told by everybody,
Softie and others that know, that's where all the bands sit.

(01:04:09):
So that comes up. That turns into a thing. Which...
And then let's get back to the Bechtold thing. Like
we're prepping and prepping to do this stuff today with
Alex and MK. And in transparency, we taped that in
the morning. Those guys have real jobs. Washington State not
only doesn't have a depth chart out, they don't even

(01:04:30):
have their release for the game out with all the information,
the history of the game, blah, blah, blah. The last
thing they posted for football that was actual football on
their official website was August 26th practice report. September 2nd.

(01:04:51):
On Apple Cup week. On Apple Cup week. There's nothing
on their official website that says Apple Cup. Nothing. I
come at it, I guess, a little differently, too, because
I come at it from a broadcaster standpoint. It's a
national television game. And maybe you're providing some information behind
the scenes to the national TV guys, but you're making
Elise's job hard. You're making your own guy, Chris King's

(01:05:13):
job hard. You're making everyone's job hard. We just look small.
We look Bush League on so many levels. I'm always
going to be a kook. I'm always going to support
the team. I'm always going to root for these guys.
Sunday I'll be living and dying on every play. It's fine.

(01:05:35):
But God, please, grow the hell up. Get it together.
Act like a big-time program. I bet I'm not even
going to try it. I don't even want to do it.
But I bet if I went to Central Washington's website,
PLU's website, they'd probably have their stuff up. It's just

(01:06:00):
the little things. And then they have this new policy.
They just started putting beer in the stands. Now they
flipped the sidelines this year. So the home team, the Cougs,
are on the press box side, which would be the
camera shoot to the visitor's side.

Speaker 4 (01:06:16):
Sure.

Speaker 1 (01:06:17):
That's a very NFL thing. Like if you think about
when you're watching a Seahawks game, you're seeing the visitor
sideline at Greenfield.

Speaker 3 (01:06:25):
On the broadcast, yes.

Speaker 4 (01:06:26):
Right.

Speaker 1 (01:06:27):
So they flipped them this year. I don't have a
problem with that. And I know they had to get
permission for that. There were some things that went into it.
But they did that. There's people, they've just got beer
and wine in the stadium. They just got it in
there last year for a handful, you know, for, and,
For a while, it was only in the club section. Now, apparently,

(01:06:48):
you can get it in other places too. But now
they're saying we're not going to sell it on that side,
on the visitor side, because wait for it. This is
actually from the liquor control board. There's some back and
forth between the school and liquor control board and whatever.
They were concerned because I guess a bunch of people
were throwing fireball mini bottles, mini bottles of fireball, empty fireball,

(01:07:10):
onto the field when they scored and stuff, something like that.
And their words can be even worse because the visitors
are over there. And that's where the students sit is
over there as well. Here's a pro tip. They don't
sell many bottles of Fireball at the concessions. They sell
beers for like 15 bucks. You're asking people not to go.

(01:07:32):
You're making it hard for people to go. You're making
it hard for people to cover the team. You didn't
show up in an official capacity to one of your legends' funerals.
I know they're going to try to do something for
Walden and build a helmet sticker or something great. You

(01:07:54):
just got absolutely blew up in your face everything that
had to do with the band. I expected better from Harlow.
I expect better from President Cantwell. Just not good. Not good.
Not good at all. Being a college fan, if you're

(01:08:15):
a fan of Wazoo, is hard enough right now. You
don't need the school and the athletic department to make
it harder.

Speaker 3 (01:08:20):
But they are.

Speaker 1 (01:08:21):
They've found a way.

Speaker 2 (01:08:23):
Yeah, well said. And it just seems like from a
very third-party perspective, I'm not a Husky, I'm not a Coug.
I see both sides of the argument for argument. Just
the sides of the rivalry, I should say.

Speaker 3 (01:08:35):
Sure, sure.

Speaker 2 (01:08:36):
But on the Coug side, a lot of it is
some animosity as to being not taken seriously.

Speaker 4 (01:08:43):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:08:44):
And everything that you're describing, it's very hard to take
something along those lines seriously. And a program who does
that seriously. So that's just like... you want to, you
want to be treated like a big time program, act
like one, right?

Speaker 1 (01:09:04):
I think that's it.

Speaker 7 (01:09:05):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:09:05):
Like don't the, what was me stuff has to come
to an end.

Speaker 4 (01:09:08):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:09:09):
Like that, that, that just has to, that just has
to come to an end. It's we're, The Big Ten
told you no. Everybody else told you no. You are
what you are. You made your bed with the new Pac-12.

Speaker 3 (01:09:18):
That's fine. Embrace it.

Speaker 1 (01:09:20):
Act like it's still Division I college football. Right? Act
like it's still Division I college football.

Speaker 5 (01:09:26):
Right.

Speaker 3 (01:09:27):
Oh, here we go.

Speaker 1 (01:09:29):
PLU. PLU, you're up to contend for the Northwest Conference title.

Speaker 2 (01:09:32):
I think Central's is up too, I looked.

Speaker 3 (01:09:34):
Did you? Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:09:37):
Can't wait for Tim Booth's in-state... Oh, this is my
favorite thing. In-state football rankings.

Speaker 1 (01:09:44):
PLU has more up on their website for a team
that hasn't won anything in forever.

Speaker 3 (01:09:48):
Sorry.

Speaker 1 (01:09:49):
Love you, Brent Adams. The coach down there is great.
He's actually really good. God, they've got a ton of stuff.
Who is our SID here? Mark Albanese, Director of Sports Communication. Hey,
hire him! Hire him! Hire him! Stop the woe-is-me crap!

(01:10:12):
Act like you're still a Division I program. You're still
an FBS program. Stop complaining about band seats. We're not
going to put out a depth chart. Do you really
think a depth chart matters in week one? Just, God.
We have a great communication school there, and yet we're

(01:10:33):
the worst school in terms of communicating. I do not
understand or get it, and I don't think I ever will.
Off the soapbox. Meanwhile, in the NBA. Yeah, that just
came down the pipe. It doesn't pay to be a
cheater unless you're the player who cheated. Next.

Speaker 7 (01:10:57):
Now back to Ian Furness on your home for the Huskies, Kraken,
and the 12th man. Brought to you by Seattle's closest
Snoqualmie Casino and Hotel on Sports Radio 93.3 KJR-FM.

Speaker 1 (01:11:12):
So I mentioned this going into the break. Big news
coming out of the NBA a minute ago. NBA on
Wednesday has announced that they have laid down the hammer
to the LA Clippers for a Kawhi Leonard signing. Kawhi
now in Toronto, if I'm not mistaken, correct? Correct. Here's

(01:11:34):
what the punishments are for what the league said is
a pattern of misconduct and multiple significant rules violations by
the Clippers organization, a prior offender of the salary cap
circumvention rules. So they've circumvented the rules. They've done it before.
So here's what happens. They will forfeit not one, not two,
not three, LeBron, not four, five first round draft picks.

(01:11:59):
Five first round draft picks. Now, the weird thing is
maybe they don't have any in the next couple of years.
The draft picks they can't use are the five, 20, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33.
So I'm assuming they may have traded the other ones away.

Speaker 2 (01:12:14):
They might have been in the Paul George trade to OKC. 27,
28 ones, who knows. So five first-round picks, which down
the road is going to be brutal. Those are picks
that help NBA teams if done even adequately.

Speaker 3 (01:12:27):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:12:28):
They are fined $ 30 million. Ballmer doesn't care about that.

Speaker 4 (01:12:32):
No.

Speaker 1 (01:12:33):
He's fined a whole bunch of money. I think more
than that. He's also suspended his bomber from all league
and team activities for one year. You won't see bomber
jumping around the baseline down at his new... Clapping. At
his brand new palace that he built. God, that hurts.

Speaker 4 (01:12:48):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (01:12:49):
That hurts.

Speaker 1 (01:12:50):
He won't even be there to unveil it. Well, no,
they played there last year.

Speaker 3 (01:12:52):
Oh, they did.

Speaker 1 (01:12:53):
Okay. But that's his baby.

Speaker 2 (01:12:55):
That is his baby.

Speaker 1 (01:12:57):
President of Business Operations Gillian Zucker suspended without pay for
one year. President of basketball operations, Lawrence Franks, has been
without pay for six months. All penalties are binding. Can't
go back and change.

Speaker 3 (01:13:09):
It, etc.

Speaker 1 (01:13:11):
Damn. That is crazy. Like, that is a big, big,
big hammer being laid down on these guys.

Speaker 3 (01:13:21):
Like, a big one.

Speaker 2 (01:13:23):
It's more than any punishment. For reference, the Astros, during
their cheatings, trash can situation, they forfeited two first-round picks.

Speaker 1 (01:13:34):
Right.

Speaker 2 (01:13:34):
And that's baseball.

Speaker 1 (01:13:35):
And did A.J. Hinch get suspended?

Speaker 2 (01:13:38):
Yes, and Alex Cora.

Speaker 1 (01:13:39):
And Alex Cora, right?

Speaker 4 (01:13:40):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:13:41):
So here's the thing with the NBA. The salary cap
is kind of all you have to rule the roost
in a sense, right? So I can see circumventing it.
He had that, whatever that company was that he was
allegedly getting paid for and paid by and all that.
the wild thing is that Kawhi Leonard's not punished and

(01:14:04):
he's the one that financially benefited from all this.

Speaker 2 (01:14:06):
He got paid.

Speaker 1 (01:14:07):
He got paid. He gets paid. Nobody gets paid more
to do less than Kawhi Leonard.

Speaker 2 (01:14:12):
Oh God.

Speaker 4 (01:14:13):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:14:13):
With his maintenance days. Exactly. Like nobody gets, nobody gets
paid more than him, uh, to do, to do little
or less or whatever. So I, I don't know, man, I,
this whole thing is just goofy to me. Uh, It's strange.
It's not good. It's just a bad, bad situation all

(01:14:35):
the way around. And the NBA laid a hammer down
on something that's happened a lot, to be honest with you,
over the years. I've told the story before. It's way
too late now, but Larry Miller, the owner of the
Jazz back in the day, he gifted car dealerships to
Stockton and Malone. How is that not the same? Maybe

(01:14:58):
it's because it's a jazz at a small market. I
have no idea. But yeah, very strange. Very bad. Very
bad all the way around. Yeah, there you go. Kawhi Leonard.
I just don't understand how he gets away with it.
I thought Tiger Woods had the worst day today.

Speaker 3 (01:15:13):
Oh, God, yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:15:14):
He had his license suspended for five years, struck a
plea deal in his DUI case. $ 1, 500 fine. He doesn't
care about that. But careless driving, all this other stuff.
He said doing the plea deal is doing what's right.
If he drives at all, he goes back to jail immediately. Now,

(01:15:35):
here's the thing. You're Tiger Woods. My question all along was,
if I was those guys making that kind of money,
I hate driving. Drive every day, drive way too far.
I'd have a driver anyway.

Speaker 8 (01:15:46):
Seriously.

Speaker 4 (01:15:46):
Seriously.

Speaker 1 (01:15:47):
It's like for a lot of people that'd be crippling.
You can go to work. You can go to the store. Yeah,
that's true for tiger, whatever, man. I'm a higher driver.
It's cool.

Speaker 2 (01:15:54):
You can get more done anyway.

Speaker 1 (01:15:55):
Do what I got to do.

Speaker 5 (01:15:56):
Right.

Speaker 1 (01:15:56):
Do what I got to do.

Speaker 4 (01:15:57):
All right.

Speaker 1 (01:15:58):
Uh, when we come back, we're going to talk Cougs,
Alex and, uh, MK, our first visit of the year.
As we get into that with them, we'll talk to
all things Wazoo football and much more. Get ready for
the apple cup. Give you a little taste of the
crimson and gray. What does it mean to those guys?
We'll also, uh, They both played for Coach Doba, and
so we'll pay tribute to Coach Doba as well. That's
coming up next.

Speaker 7 (01:16:21):
Now, from the Star Reynolds Sports Desk, your 93.3 KKRFM
Sports Headlines.

Speaker 1 (01:16:27):
Headlines are brought to you by Frostbrood Coors Light, cold
as the Rockies.

Speaker 3 (01:16:31):
Yes, they are.

Speaker 1 (01:16:32):
We've got some news, basketball news, breaking news in the NBA.
Clippers lose five first-round picks, find $ 30 million. Steve Ballmer
is suspended, their owner, from all league and team activities
for one year. Because they circumvented the salary cap with
Kawhi Leonard. He, by the way, was not punished. Okay.

Speaker 2 (01:16:50):
But he takes full responsibility, Ian.

Speaker 1 (01:16:51):
Full responsibility.

Speaker 2 (01:16:53):
Of lapses in judgment.

Speaker 1 (01:16:55):
So many lapses.

Speaker 2 (01:16:56):
Not in himself, but in people from his inner circle.

Speaker 1 (01:16:58):
Yeah, that's full responsibility.

Speaker 2 (01:17:00):
Full responsibility on someone else.

Speaker 4 (01:17:03):
Unreal.

Speaker 1 (01:17:05):
Other news from the world of sports today. Tiger Woods
has had his driver's license suspended five years after striking
a plea deal in his DUI case. Can't drive for
five years. Damn. If only he had afforded a driver. Oh, wait.

Speaker 8 (01:17:21):
Sorry.

Speaker 1 (01:17:22):
Maybe he can. Not a golf club driver. George Kittle
and Nick Bosa expect to make the trip to Australia.
They have a shot to play week one versus the Rams.
The Vikings expect J.J. McCarthy to be on the week
one roster. Seahawks back at practice tomorrow. It's Apple Cup
week as well, 1 o'clock Sunday right here on KJR
and of course also on, I believe it's NBC is
airing the game on Sunday. Let's talk about the Apple Cup. Alex, MK,

(01:17:44):
standing by talking Cougs with the Coug Legends, Alex Brink
and Crystal Bruce. It's time to.

Speaker 1 (01:18:37):
Legends indeed here they are alex brink and crystal bruce
back again another year here we go the band is
back together i was looking back alex i saw i
was searching a text for something and I saw a
text from, it was like, I think this is 10
years for us, for you and me. Like, like I
think this is, you know, like four emails, five jobs,

(01:18:58):
you know, minus two kids ago. It's a, it's been
a while. And, uh, we brought the big fellow on
a few years ago and, uh, haven't looked back. So
great to see you too. Great to hear from you
as well on a apple cup week. Alex, how are you?

Speaker 4 (01:19:10):
I'm so good. I remember, Ian, walking the streets of
Montreal while I was playing in the CFL, doing a
hit with you, or weekly hit, just cruising the streets
of Montreal, one of the greatest cities in North America,
God bless it. It's been 10 years. That's crazy to
think about.

Speaker 6 (01:19:29):
It is.

Speaker 7 (01:19:30):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:19:30):
The pride of the Alouettes, MK. That's who he was.
The pride of the Alouettes. Crystal Bruce.

Speaker 6 (01:19:35):
Every million years, what I've ever thought I'd hear Brink say,
cruising the streets. Cruising the streets of Montreal. Man, I'm
so fired up, Ian. You know, I'm from the West Side,
so I'm like bleeding this. Like my palms are sweaty.
It's been the whole week and it's already wet. It's
only Wednesday.

Speaker 1 (01:19:53):
What day is it? Yeah, it's Wednesday. Yeah, that's it, baby.
That's it. Well, let me. Listen, we're going to talk
Apple Cup. We're going to talk bigger pitch. We're going
to get all that stuff in a second. I want
to do this. I want to start, not to start
on a down note, but maybe more of a positive
to remember somebody as well. Coach Bill Doba passed away
a few days ago. You guys both played for him,
had intimate relationships with him. Alex is your head coach.

(01:20:13):
MK is your defensive coordinator and your head coach along
the way. I'll start real quick. I I've been in
this business for a long time. I've been around a
lot of people, a lot of different athletes, coaches, and others.
I'm not sure if I've come across a nicer, classier
human being than Bill Doble was. I was lucky enough

(01:20:37):
for a few years, back when they still liked me,
I guess, to do a bunch of stuff with the
Cougar Athletic Fund. And a lot of those years were
during the Doble years, both as a coordinator and as
a head coach. And he was just gracious. I thought
to myself, man, if my son ever played for this guy,
he'd be better off for it. You know, I used

(01:20:58):
to tell the story. He'd sit there. My wife would
go to these things and sometimes wouldn't know anybody there,
even though she's a Coug, depending on where we were.
And she sat at his table a couple times. They
drank a lot of wine. We ended up bidding on
a lot of stuff, or she did. But those memories
are always going to be with me. And I'm glad
Bill's last game as the head coach was the Apple Cup.
When last I checked, quarterback number 10 there stepped up

(01:21:23):
near midfield and found the Prada Puyallup, Brandon Gibson. Touchdown.
But I just rest in peace, Bill. I hope Wazoo
honors him and honors him rightly, as well as Jim Walton.
I hope they do that as well, the first game, whatever,
however it works and takes place. But you guys both
played for him. Alex, I'll let you start.

Speaker 4 (01:21:43):
Yeah, well, to that point, I think I saw a
headline that just crossed where they're going to be wearing
helmet decals for both Coach Walden and Coach Doba all year,
which to your point is really cool. Yeah, I mean, look,
Bill Doba is one of the best men I've ever
been around, let alone football coaches. I was impacted greatly
by him. He's like a father figure to me. And,
you know, there were some hard times, you know, during

(01:22:05):
our tenure at Washington State. And he was always... you know,
a rock for us as players, open door policy to
come in and talk to them. And, you know, as
the quarterback at that time, you know, and the responsibility
that comes with it, it was awesome to have a
head coach that supported me, you know, through all the
ups and downs. So yeah, You know, I know at
MK it feels the same way, but I was really

(01:22:27):
fortunate last year. Coach Dova came back to a game
and I got to tell him as such, you know,
obviously he's, he was 84 years old at the time,
85 now, you know, you knew there was the time
was coming. And so on a personal level, you know,
I'm very grateful. I got to share that with him,
how much he meant to me, you know, but he's incredible.
And just, you know, quickly on his legacy. I mean,
you think about all the things he did as the coordinator,

(01:22:47):
the holiday bowl win, the apple cup wins, but I think,
you know, people need to remember how close, you know,
that time in Cougar football was to being pretty special.
I mean, a few bounces here and there, and we
are a multi-bowl team, right? Six and six in 06,
probably should have been a seven or eight win team
that year. In 05, we lost four games or five
games by four points or less. Like it was right

(01:23:08):
on the cusp. And I think Coach Stilba doesn't get
the credit sometimes of how good the league was during
that time and what the challenges were that we faced.
You know, and so I think it's just important from
a football perspective, not only he's an incredible person, but
from a football perspective, he's a darn good football coach.

Speaker 6 (01:23:25):
Yeah, I mean, he was almost like a savant when
it came down to defense. He was such a great
football minded person. But, you know, Dobes was one of
those guys that he didn't want to be the talking head.
He didn't want to be the guy in front of
the guy.

Speaker 1 (01:23:38):
He just he loved football.

Speaker 3 (01:23:39):
He loved the game.

Speaker 6 (01:23:40):
He was also one of those guys when you talk
to him, he looked you right in your eyes and
he was interested and locked in. Like you felt like
you were seen and heard him. And, you know, you
always had a say in something and you can sit
down and really talk to him. But I don't know
if I'd be playing there if it wasn't for Dobes,
you know, talking about someone who just believed in his players.
I had a flip phone when I was there and

(01:24:01):
I had his number saved because he would talk to
me quite a bit as one of the captains. And,
you know, throughout the years, that number just kept saving
to every, all the phones and every, every year, at
least once a year, I would just call him like, yo, Doves,
what are you doing? Oh, MK, you know, these SOBs,
they still paid me when I left. So I'm just
sitting on the lake fishing, you know, and you would

(01:24:21):
sit and just have a, you know, some great talk
with them. He's back in Indiana. But one thing about
Doves is all of us players, you know, you leave
your parents, you're over there. you know, without parents and
your coaches essentially like Brink was saying, are your parents.
So he was always wanted the best for you. And
to this day, I got to go sit with him
at the last QB classic and you'd pick up a conversation.

(01:24:42):
Like you never left. It gives me goosebumps thinking about it.
Those remembers everything. You talk about a play, you talk
about a situation that happened on the team or whatever.
He remembered it like it was just yesterday. So a
special person, the Cougs lost someone special, but I think
we should celebrate him for all the things that he
left behind. So I'm not really like, I'm sad he's gone,
but I'm also like, man, 85 is a great run.

Speaker 5 (01:25:02):
Right.

Speaker 6 (01:25:02):
You know, and he touched so many lives that I'm
just happy that I was I was part of it.

Speaker 1 (01:25:08):
Yeah, I'm glad, too, that a he got almost 20
years to spend back in his home area with his
grandkids and his family, you know, and was able to
retire and. did well enough during his coaching days to
be able to do that. I'm also glad that, I mean, listen,
I'll raise my hand. I'm near the top of the
list in terms of pettiness sometimes when it comes to

(01:25:29):
some things that have gone on between me and the
school and the athletic department. Dobes wasn't that way. He
got kicked to the curb, and that guy yet still
came back to whatever it was, the Coeur d'Alene events,
the Cougar Classic events. He was still a Coug through
and through, and I'll just go back, Alex. The last
game I mean, could it be more fitting? We're talking

(01:25:50):
Apple Cup this week. Could it be more fitting? And
I remember walking out of that stadium. That's the last
time I went to an Apple Cup there and probably
will be. But I remember walking out of that stadium thinking,
because the rumors were that he was going to be done.
He was going to step down or, you know, a
mutual decision. I was like, man, why? I think Dobbs
is like, there's something there. Like, we're close, right? But, yeah,
I don't want to look back at hindsight 2020, but

(01:26:10):
I just think the fact, and I love the fact, Alex,
I didn't see that. Yeah, if they're going to wear
Walden and Doba stickers, both those guys are, have incredible
legacies as far as the Apple cup is concerned, you know?
So that's, that's the other part of it along the way. So, uh,
good for both of them, Jim and a shout out
to Jim Walden, his family, uh, coach Walden was the
one that brought the Apple cup back to, back to
Pullman and was, was emphatic about playing games in Pullman

(01:26:34):
on campus and not at Joe Albee stadium and places
like that. And, and, uh, and Jim was one of
the great characters of all time. Same thing. He left
on his own accord, but he came back and was
one of the great, I mean, Bob Robertson and, and
Jim Walden calling a football game on the radio. We'll
never have that again. That was special. I'll do respect
to our analyst right now who's really good at his job,

(01:26:55):
really good at his job. There was something about the
two Muppets sitting up there chirping away up in the
press box and just going at it. So rest in peace,
Bob and Jim and Coach Dobes as well. All right,
let's get to the Apple Cup. Alex Brink, I'm Chris
Robles here. MK, I'll let you start. You said it.
What does it mean to you? Even though it's September,

(01:27:15):
it's not a conference game anymore. What does it mean
to you?

Speaker 6 (01:27:18):
I'm going to stay positive and maybe one little jab
at them. But for me as a kid, I was
always the guy wearing the WSU shirt, you know, on
Apple Cup Day in elementary school all the way up.
So I like I bleed this stuff. I love it.
I feel like, you know. The split families where some
of the kids went to UW, some of the kids
went to WSU and parents and things like that. It's
so fun. It's so beautiful. It's something that I think

(01:27:42):
needs to carry on and with the death of the
Pac-12 that basically we're trying to do and try and
get rid of everything. It breaks my heart because this
is something that means so much to so many Washingtonians, right,
or people that have been in Washington for years. Bringing
up real quick, is the ban not coming over because
of lack of tickets or lack of a section?

Speaker 1 (01:28:02):
Well, no, let me correct that. They have tickets. They're
up high. It's turned into a big thing. It is
a thing. It's always a thing. There's always going to
be a thing. They had access. They had tickets. It's
in the upper deck. They didn't want to be up there.
It's the first time since the last time they played
in Husky Stadium, it was still a Pac-12, and they
had a different ticket policy. I want to blame them

(01:28:25):
for a lot of things.

Speaker 3 (01:28:26):
Trust me.

Speaker 1 (01:28:26):
Like sitting here over here in this station every day,
that's not one of them.

Speaker 6 (01:28:31):
You don't think so?

Speaker 4 (01:28:32):
No.

Speaker 1 (01:28:33):
I think I'll say this. Maybe both sides could be
better with it. Like like we could have, we could
have handled it better. They could have made an exception
for this one particular game, maybe, but, but, Traditions are traditions,
but we're still here. Traditions, I think traditions went out
the door four years ago, guys. I don't know what

(01:28:55):
traditions we have anymore in college football. Alex, you might
still have eligibility left. Are you going to go play
at LSU or anything like that? I mean, who knows?

Speaker 6 (01:29:01):
Hey, Alex, if they said you can come back right now,
would you do it?

Speaker 4 (01:29:05):
Yeah, for sure.

Speaker 1 (01:29:07):
Well, for the money. I mean, you, I mean, Oh.

Speaker 4 (01:29:10):
Guys, I certainly wouldn't be sitting here talking to you guys.
If I was playing quarterback in this day and age,
unless you, you know, God, he just kicked us to
the curb. That's probably also true.

Speaker 1 (01:29:28):
You came from Oregon. How long did it take you
to understand what the apple cup meant?

Speaker 4 (01:29:32):
I mean, I knew what it was, right? I grew
up in the Civil War. I understood the type of
history and those type of rivalries, Oregon, Oregon State being
very similar in that sense. But to me, again, and
I've said this before, is that a lot of it
had to do with the approach that Bill and his
coaching staff took to it, right? We had a lot

(01:29:52):
of coogs on that staff. You know, they treated the
game as an important game and like more important and,
or at least having more about it than a regular
football game. And like, again, I think that's okay because
I think it creates an edge for you. I think
it creates some excitement that you can, you know, you
can really ride that wave a little bit. And, you know,
so there was, we had speakers, we had, you know,

(01:30:14):
all sorts of information and like bulletin board material and
all the things like, you know, throughout the year. So again,
like I knew what it was, I think in the
context of, you know, the current landscape of college football,
you know, this is, these type of rivalries mean everything,
you know, I mean, when you're talking about players coming,
but you know, college players that go to the NFL
and could come back to college when you talk about,

(01:30:35):
you know, all the things going on with, with, you know,
where the state of college football is rival rivalries that
have lasted over a hundred years or what is right
about college football.

Speaker 1 (01:30:46):
Right.

Speaker 4 (01:30:46):
Regional rivalries with regional fan bases and all that matter.
I think that's what makes this so special. And, you know,
I'm happy that we get to be a part of it.
I'm happy that we got we got to in our
time be a part of it. And I think it's,
you know, again, this day and age, no matter when
that game's played, it's an important piece of the fabric
of college football.

Speaker 1 (01:31:05):
There's so much unknown right now. Go ahead.

Speaker 6 (01:31:08):
I think Kirby is the right person for the job
because of his ties to Washington State.

Speaker 4 (01:31:13):
Right.

Speaker 6 (01:31:14):
I think he's the right person, but also he's already
talking about he brought back Leaf, he brought back Jack,
he brought back a bunch of players. Personally, the coaches
are reaching out to the old players to keep that
lineage there, keep that history there. No coaches before this
have done this at all. So I think, yeah, Alex,
you could probably say the same thing. You're in a
locker room and they're getting texts, they're getting things from

(01:31:34):
their university, like come back to the school, come back
to the school, come to your school, share your experience.
Washington State, after Dobes, Price and Dobes, they were all
about it. We used to have players walking through the
locker room that used to play. Billy Newman, Joey Hollenbeck,
all the players would come back. And you're like, whoa,
these are the guys that built this, right? It was
cool to have. And that's what they lost. And Kirby's
doing that with his staff now, which I love.

Speaker 1 (01:31:55):
Yeah, Alex, I think Kirby Moore. I mean, it's the
great unknown is everything about this game as far as
Wazoo's concerned. I mean, we don't know Kirby Moore as
a head coach. We do know Trent Bray as a
defensive coordinator. Now, maybe he wasn't a great head coach
at Oregon State, and that's maybe not his thing. And
there's a lot of guys that are great coordinators that
aren't great head coaches. But I'll just start, Alex, with

(01:32:18):
just your thoughts on that coaching. I'm excited about the staff.
I can't wait to see what Kirby's all about. But
at the same time, excited about the defense and Trent Bray.
I think that's a massive coup to get him.

Speaker 4 (01:32:30):
I think, yeah, guys, look, there's a lot of intrigue.
There's a lot of unknown in this game. Obviously, I
know the Huskies are ranked, and they have a lot
of hype around who they are. But I do think
there's some things here that are overlooked for Washington State.
I think you're dead on when you talk about Trent
Bray as a defensive coordinator. I mean, prior to him
taking that head coaching job at Oregon State, which... I

(01:32:53):
think kind of soured maybe people's outside perception of him.
I mean, he's one of the best defensive coordinators in
the country and did more with less year in and
year out. And you look at what he's done on
this defensive roster, it's a lot of new faces. I mean,
a lot of people probably don't have any idea who
nine of the starters will be on this team. But
if you go through kind of individually what they did

(01:33:18):
last year or at their previous stops, you could see
where there's a case to be made that this is
a really good football team. Certainly physically, on paper, this
team looks different than they did last year. Now, last
year was a really good defensive football team, really well coached, hard-nosed.
But you have better athletes, I think, in this group.
And if they can kind of put it together under
Trent Burns... I think it could be really good. I'm

(01:33:39):
looking at that defensive line. Linus Zunk, the DN from Vanderbilt,
Matthias McClain, the DN from Idaho are both great additions,
along with Paul Hudson III, a couple other guys on
that list. And I really like some of the back-end
guys they added in. So super excited about that. Offensively,
I'm really intrigued because Kirby Moore is going to have
his fingerprints on the offense, but this is Matt Miller's show,

(01:33:59):
the offensive coordinator. but you return a ton of talent, right?
Entire offensive line, entire running back backfield. Tony Freeman's coming back. So, again,
I think Washington State, I don't know. I don't know
what to expect Sunday, but it wouldn't surprise me, right,
if they're in this game going into the fourth quarter
and making the Huskies sweat.

Speaker 6 (01:34:20):
A little bit. Like you were saying, doing more with
less is the biggest thing. I don't know if you
have the numbers, Ian, but I think it was like
$ 28 million that they collected and they pooled for UW's
roster versus our, what, 10 or whatever?

Speaker 1 (01:34:36):
The quarterback in Washington might be making more than our roster. Yeah. Yeah.
I mean, he doesn't want to be there, by the way.
I mean, they can spin it all they want. He
didn't want to be there. He tried to leave and.

Speaker 3 (01:34:47):
They held him hostage.

Speaker 1 (01:34:49):
MK, you got to love the fact that the strength
of this defense, everything I see in here is is
the front four, the front seven. It's those guys. Your guys, MK.
We haven't talked about that in a while. It's been since, what,
Stone and company left that we've been talking about a
strength of this team being up front, buddy. It looks
like that's what Bray's all about right now.

Speaker 6 (01:35:07):
I'm excited about it. He's a big boy up there.
He's pushing three-something. But Leite Zung, I think the German
that came over, he had things, he had, he had
some injuries, whatever they were talking about him, like really
tearing it up on the off season or this, um, uh,
training camp before, um, this season, but I'm excited to
see what he does as a leader, as a captain.
But if we get our DNs, our edge rushers getting

(01:35:29):
out there and getting after it, and then, you know,
hopefully Brown in the middle, trying to attack the ball
and get a hundred tackles this year, I'm going to
be pretty excited about it.

Speaker 1 (01:35:36):
MK, let me stay with you real fast. I'll go
to Alex, jump in afterwards, just, just one key to
the game. And then I'm going to ask a bigger
picture question. Um, MK with, with a guy like Daman Williams,
I mean, all joking aside about wanting him to leave.
And again, they held him hostage. He's being held hostage.
He's Daman blink twice. If you want to leave. Hey,
but as, as you do that, what do you, he

(01:35:56):
is crazy athletic and crazy fast, and he's got a
nice arm. He's got, he's got a lot of tools.
What do you do with a guy like that?

Speaker 6 (01:36:04):
That's the thing that that's the, my biggest scariest part
of this game right now is he can beat you
with his legs or his arm. And he's absolutely lightning fast. Uh,
If we don't contain him, it's going to be a
long day, period, period, point blank. That's a guy that,
you know, if nobody's open, he's going to go one, two, three,
and then he's taken off, and he's faster than everybody, right?
So you have to corral him, gang tackle him, 11

(01:36:25):
hats to the football. I mean, Alex will tell you, like,
those quarterbacks are the hardest quarterbacks to game plan against
just because of coverages. You can't do specific coverages with
them because you do that, you leave some spaces wide open,
you open up the passing lanes, and then they're off
to the races. So that's what I'm worried about.

Speaker 1 (01:36:42):
Alex?

Speaker 4 (01:36:44):
Yeah, it's a unique challenge. We saw it last year.
Even when you get to him and you get him
in the pocket, he's really slippery to get out. I
think in the end, where I look at it is
that they're having some transition. Denzel Boston is in the
NFL now. You don't have Jonah Coleman at running back.
There's certainly talent that's going to backfill, but they're kind
of trying to figure out maybe who they are at
the offensive skill positions. I think you want to make

(01:37:08):
DeMond Williams beat you through all the football. You can't
let them establish a run. You can't let... You know,
you can't let him beat you with his legs. He'll
get his at times. You just got to eliminate there.
You got to limit the explosive place.

Speaker 6 (01:37:20):
Well, also just continuing the drive going, right? That's what
we have to limit and get off the field. That
third down play, if it's not there, if he checks
down and just goes, that's going to be the problem.

Speaker 1 (01:37:30):
Uh alex what do you know about caden pinnick i
know he played last year in the fcs had a
really nice season as a freshman in the big sky
what do you what do you know about the starting quarterback.

Speaker 4 (01:37:37):
Well you know i was i was actually really fortunate
caden pinnick um reached out to me this summer to
come down and and train a little bit here in
oregon uh in between his time uh with summer workouts
and fall camp so i got to know him pretty
well uh incredibly mature young man for a young player
like he it was he did it on his own
reached out to me flew down here on his own
dime like And I thought that was really impressive. You

(01:37:57):
can tell kind of why he won the locker room over.
I think physically he has a lot of tools. Like
he's obviously not the biggest guy, but this day and age,
that's not a prereq to playing quarterback at a high level.
You know, you don't throw for over 3000 yards, over
30 touchdowns. in a good league like the big sky
unless you're a good football player right no matter what
the level is i mean we can you know do
the trinidad shambles right comparison and you know if you

(01:38:19):
want it's like d2 football high level champion productive goes
to old miss same thing so it's you know again
if you're a good football player you're going to be
a good football player on pretty much anywhere. And I
think Caden Pinnett fits that mold. He's a good athlete.
He's going to make plays off schedule. He can make
all the throws on the field. I'm really excited to
see him in this offense. And I think the best

(01:38:39):
thing he has going for him, again, is you have
a returning offensive line. and you have a veteran stable
running back. So if you can kind of lean into
that running game, have some balance, that's really going to
help take the pressure off kind of early in the year.

Speaker 1 (01:38:52):
All right, let's wrap it up, boys. MK, Guild Mortgage,
talk to me.

Speaker 6 (01:38:57):
Man, we're killing it right now. We're all up and
down the West Coast, but most of our business is
in Washington. If you're looking to purchase or refinance, reach
out to Team Bruce. If you're looking to get fit
or just lose a little weight or just go to
a great gym, go to the Buffalo Gym over in
Maple Valley.

Speaker 1 (01:39:11):
All right, Alex, how's the shoe business, buddy?

Speaker 4 (01:39:14):
Oh, shoe business is booming, as they say. Yeah, it's fun.
For those that don't know, my brother and I revived
our family shoe brand called Osaga, founded in the early 70s,
early competitor to Nike, Adidas, Puma, all of the above.
um you know if you like a comfortable retro style
shoe check out osaga.com we got a few styles and

(01:39:35):
sizes left we're actually almost sold out of a lot
of them getting ready to order our second round here
we're fired up appreciate the support you can follow on
instagram at osaga.us also support any way you can.

Speaker 1 (01:39:47):
I think one of the cool stories honestly i haven't
told you i think it's one of the really cool
stories what you guys you and your brother done i'm
rocking them yeah let's go Probably got more than one
knowing you, fella. Like, hey, do you like the Liberty
High School t-shirt? Do you like that? I love that.
I wanted to wear number two, but apparently I can't.
I guess that's been retired up there.

Speaker 4 (01:40:07):
Look at that.

Speaker 1 (01:40:09):
Old guy. Yeah, I see some grays in that beard.
That's Alex. That's MK. Next week, we'll have more to
discuss and figure out exactly where this team is after
we get a chance to lay eyes on them. That's
the world of college football these days. Go Cougs. Apple
Cup this Sunday. Thanks, Alex.

Speaker 3 (01:40:22):
Thanks, MK.

Speaker 1 (01:40:22):
I'll talk to you guys next week.

Speaker 4 (01:40:23):
Go Cougs.

Speaker 1 (01:40:24):
There you go. We'll take a quick break. Come back
for more at 93.3 KJR FM.

Speaker 7 (01:40:31):
Now back to Ian Furness on your home for the Huskies, Kraken,
and the 12th man. Brought to you by Seattle's closest
Snoqualmie Casino and Hotel on Sports Radio 93.3 KJR FM.

Speaker 1 (01:40:42):
Hey, it's Ian Furness. Okay, here's the deal.

Speaker 5 (01:40:50):
Wait for it. Okay, now wait for it. Wait for it.

Speaker 4 (01:40:54):
Here's the deal.

Speaker 9 (01:40:55):
Okay, now here's the deal.

Speaker 3 (01:40:58):
Wait for it.

Speaker 5 (01:41:00):
Wait for it.

Speaker 4 (01:41:01):
Here's the deal.

Speaker 9 (01:41:04):
Okay, now here's the deal.

Speaker 4 (01:41:05):
Wait for it.

Speaker 1 (01:41:06):
Wait for it.

Speaker 5 (01:41:09):
Wait for it.

Speaker 3 (01:41:10):
Okay, here's the deal.

Speaker 9 (01:41:12):
Here's the deal.

Speaker 5 (01:41:13):
Wait for it. Okay, wait for it.

Speaker 1 (01:41:18):
Okay. I know I do the... Here's the deal. Do
I do wait for it too?

Speaker 2 (01:41:23):
Well, you do like when you're doing a joke, let's
say a designated hitter that wait for it hits.

Speaker 1 (01:41:37):
You know, the beautiful thing about the, about the talk
back is that you just find out a lot about yourself.
It's true. It's really, it's, it's, it's, Yeah, you find
out a lot.

Speaker 3 (01:41:51):
Oh, I say that?

Speaker 1 (01:41:52):
Oh, okay.

Speaker 7 (01:41:53):
Perfect.

Speaker 1 (01:41:55):
I love it. I love it.

Speaker 3 (01:41:56):
It's good stuff.

Speaker 2 (01:41:58):
Well done.

Speaker 7 (01:41:59):
Well done.

Speaker 1 (01:41:59):
That was well done.

Speaker 7 (01:42:00):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:42:00):
That was well done.

Speaker 3 (01:42:02):
Wait for it.

Speaker 2 (01:42:03):
Here's the deal.

Speaker 1 (01:42:04):
If you have a designated here that wait for it,
actually hits. Yeah, no, I got you. I got you. Oh, gosh.
All right.

Speaker 2 (01:42:14):
Text line. I got a lot back in.

Speaker 5 (01:42:16):
Hold on.

Speaker 4 (01:42:17):
I got a bunch here.

Speaker 8 (01:42:18):
Okay.

Speaker 1 (01:42:19):
Oh, somebody actually pointed this out to us, what you
pointed out earlier. There is a new Dan Wilson website, toughondonight.com.
Just do yourself a favor, type in toughondonight.com. Toughondonight.com.

Speaker 2 (01:42:29):
You can randomize any Mariner loss, and it will tell
you the exact quote from postgame, and it almost every
time is a version of Dan Wilson saying tough one tonight.

Speaker 3 (01:42:43):
Oh, my gosh.

Speaker 4 (01:42:45):
I love that.

Speaker 2 (01:42:45):
Whoever did that, good on you.

Speaker 1 (01:42:47):
Good on you.

Speaker 2 (01:42:49):
It's a very Nathan Bishop undertaking. Oh, very much so.
I'm actually quite suspicious it is him.

Speaker 4 (01:42:54):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:42:56):
Has he responded?

Speaker 3 (01:42:58):
He has not responded.

Speaker 1 (01:43:01):
Because it has the same graphics look as the Ref Snyder,
Taylor Ward hit tracker. Yes. Which previously had been used
for AJ Pollock, Colton Long, and others.

Speaker 2 (01:43:14):
Tommy LaStella, Cooper Hummel. Donovan Solano.

Speaker 1 (01:43:18):
Let's see. Only surprise 253 about Hard Knocks was the
lack of O-line. Yeah, they did not touch base with
the O-line. I thought Gray Zabel would have been more
of a factor. I thought Gray Zabel would have been
something they would have leaned into more.

Speaker 3 (01:43:34):
Yeah, I agree.

Speaker 1 (01:43:35):
I thought A.J. Barner was something they would have leaned into.
I also agree. I wasn't much sure with A.J.

Speaker 6 (01:43:39):
Either.

Speaker 2 (01:43:39):
Wasn't a ton of Sam Darnold either, which surprised me.

Speaker 1 (01:43:42):
First Two episodes? First episode for sure.

Speaker 2 (01:43:45):
A little bit. Not a ton.

Speaker 1 (01:43:47):
Yeah, no, that's true. Best part about Schnatter going to
Dino's is the 206 is people leave him alone. I've
seen him many times.

Speaker 3 (01:43:54):
No one bothers him. It's awesome.

Speaker 1 (01:43:55):
Yeah, I can't remember not seeing him there when I've
been there. I don't go there like, maybe if I
go there once a month, but people leave him alone.

Speaker 3 (01:44:06):
I think that's cool.

Speaker 1 (01:44:06):
I think it's really cool.

Speaker 4 (01:44:08):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:44:09):
And they showed that in the video. There's people shooting
pool right behind him.

Speaker 1 (01:44:13):
Well, and there's camera crew there.

Speaker 2 (01:44:15):
It's like, oh, there's obviously something going on, but no,
let's just leave him be. I love that.

Speaker 1 (01:44:19):
206, Ian, I'm appreciating the retro Sonics green hoodie. I
also appreciate it not. Go Sonics swingman red hoodie. Thank
you for watching on the YouTube. Simplyseattle.com. Mollywop15 to check out.
Get your Sonics retro green jersey. And the Sonics are not,
red is not part of their color scheme.

Speaker 4 (01:44:36):
No, it's not.

Speaker 1 (01:44:36):
So when people try to bring that up, no. That's
a big no for me. It's yellow and green.

Speaker 2 (01:44:43):
Simple as that.

Speaker 1 (01:44:44):
The whole red thing pissed me off.

Speaker 4 (01:44:45):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:44:47):
Okay. Let's see what else. Got the girlfriend into hard knocks.
Enjoy it so much. You got a pair of the slip-ons.
Uso was wearing it last night's episode.

Speaker 3 (01:44:57):
I love that.

Speaker 1 (01:44:57):
That's pretty cool.

Speaker 2 (01:44:58):
I wish I could get my wife into hard knocks.
I tried the first episode.

Speaker 1 (01:45:02):
The storylines are good. I mean, I think you have
to have a little concept of football, probably.

Speaker 7 (01:45:06):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:45:06):
And she's from Argentina, so I can see that.

Speaker 3 (01:45:10):
Let's see.

Speaker 1 (01:45:12):
They'll give Randy a qualifying offer if he signs elsewhere.
It's a high draft pick next year. It's better than
having trade him at the deadline.

Speaker 2 (01:45:16):
That's exactly what I would do. And there's a chance
he accepts it, too, if he doesn't get what he
wants with free agency, especially with the whole stuff going
on with next year.

Speaker 1 (01:45:23):
Well, there's a weird... The dynamic of next year is
very much in play. Yeah. Like, where are we? What happens?
What do we do?

Speaker 4 (01:45:31):
Right?

Speaker 1 (01:45:31):
Like, the whole.

Speaker 2 (01:45:32):
Yeah, but also, it's very much like, and good for
him for doing this, but it screams like, hey, have
the best year of your career right before you hit
free agency, and then, you know, let's take some money
and call it a day.

Speaker 1 (01:45:48):
Rams hate more than their head coach aside because of
their stupid in-stadium who's house hype guy.

Speaker 2 (01:45:52):
Oh, I hate that.

Speaker 4 (01:45:53):
So.

Speaker 1 (01:45:54):
I'm trying to remember, how much does that bleed over
on the TV?

Speaker 2 (01:45:57):
Quite a bit.

Speaker 1 (01:45:57):
Okay.

Speaker 2 (01:45:58):
More than other stadiums. I mean, obviously it doesn't dominate
the sound, but you can hear it for sure.

Speaker 1 (01:46:05):
It's the most annoying thing I've ever heard in a
stadium in my life. Like, in person.

Speaker 2 (01:46:09):
Whose house?

Speaker 1 (01:46:11):
My favorite one before was Rams Rules. That was my favorite. Oh, God.
Rams Rules, when they were in St. Louis and did
the whole, like, here's how you... The darkest stadium of
all time? The darkest... Yeah, everything. But it's like, how
to be a fan? So embarrassing. Now, I mean, they moved,
so I guess that's part of the reason, right?

Speaker 3 (01:46:30):
Yeah. The 49ers Stadium, Levi's.

Speaker 1 (01:46:34):
I don't know if they still do this, but the
last time I was there was 2023. And when they
moved into Levi's Stadium, every year we went there, 10, 12,
13 years, they had these warnings everywhere. We're an hour away,
getting your seats, telling people when to be there, just
trying to hold your hand.

Speaker 2 (01:46:53):
Stuff you would never see in Lumen.

Speaker 1 (01:46:55):
You would never see that in Lumen. Never see them.

Speaker 4 (01:46:58):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:46:58):
We're just better fans here.

Speaker 2 (01:46:59):
100% agree.

Speaker 1 (01:47:02):
And then Arizona doesn't have fans, so it's fine. Okay.
Interesting point to hammer on about DeMond not wanting to
be at UW. So if he goes off against the Cougs,
you've got smoked by a team where the quarterback doesn't
want to be there.

Speaker 3 (01:47:13):
That's true. That will happen.

Speaker 1 (01:47:14):
Very true. You're right, 206. It does seem like Ian
can't win. Well, this is another one, 360. Chirping about
DeMond leaving UW isn't the big one you think it is.
He was offered more than a million dollars a year.
Who wouldn't have wanted that? Well, I know. But that
doesn't change the point that he didn't want to be here.

Speaker 7 (01:47:34):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:47:35):
It's not like we're really blaming.

Speaker 4 (01:47:37):
Him for it.

Speaker 1 (01:47:38):
I'm not blaming him for it.

Speaker 6 (01:47:39):
No.

Speaker 1 (01:47:39):
It is funny because people really get upset when you
bring that up.

Speaker 2 (01:47:41):
They really do.

Speaker 1 (01:47:42):
Really get upset. Should the Cougars agree to play all
Apple Cups in Seattle to keep the series going?

Speaker 2 (01:47:48):
I know you want it to be done.

Speaker 1 (01:47:52):
If you keep doing it, you play in Martin Stadium
and Husky Stadium and that's it. None of this neutral
site nonsense. Because a neutral site would never be a
neutral site. It'd be Husky Stadium, Lumen, Husky Stadium, Lumen,
Husky Stadium, Lumen. We do a bad enough job. Wazoo
does a bad enough job supporting local business as it is.
Now local business sometimes does its own bad job because
they charge a lot for hotels and stuff, but No. No.

Speaker 5 (01:48:15):
No.

Speaker 1 (01:48:17):
No. Okay.

Speaker 3 (01:48:19):
Let's see.

Speaker 1 (01:48:20):
Oh, this is the perfect opportunity for Ballmer to buy
the Mariners. There's nothing better to do for the next year. True.

Speaker 2 (01:48:25):
I mentioned that. I was like, hey, you want to
get into baseball? Want to get into baseball, Ballmer?

Speaker 1 (01:48:29):
Absolutely. Steve, you got money.

Speaker 2 (01:48:31):
Hey, you probably won't get sanctioned as heavily in MLB.

Speaker 1 (01:48:35):
There's no salary cap in the MLB. Exactly. You can
do whatever you want. You can give these guys whatever
the hell you want. Circumvent the cap all you want
because there's no cap. Do your thing. Get after it. Cheat.

Speaker 3 (01:48:45):
Have some fun.

Speaker 4 (01:48:46):
Let's go.

Speaker 1 (01:48:46):
I'm all in.

Speaker 3 (01:48:49):
I'm all in.

Speaker 1 (01:48:49):
Let's get Balmer here. I like a guy like that.
I was talking about the Wazoo just being stupid.

Speaker 5 (01:48:56):
4-2-5.

Speaker 1 (01:48:58):
Central Washington does have their weekly stuff up. Go Wildcats. Oh,
we've won a national championship and regularly make the playoffs. Yeah,
you also play in D2, which is going to die.
Let's not get too cocky. D2 football is all but dead.
It's kind of sad, actually. I want more opportunities for
kids to play, not less.

Speaker 5 (01:49:14):
100%.

Speaker 1 (01:49:16):
And the 5-5, I don't think it's helping high school
kids at all. So I want him, but that's... D2
football is weird. It's just gone sideways. Okay, what else
we got? I got a couple more I want to
get to. Oh, hang on a second. Keith, I'll get
to you last. Somebody said something about text. So yes,
for tomorrow... Tomorrow? Since we're probably going to send another

(01:49:37):
talk back. When we have Funston on at 2.

Speaker 3 (01:49:41):
Here's the deal.

Speaker 2 (01:49:43):
I responded to him, but yeah, you can just let
him know.

Speaker 1 (01:49:45):
For people who want to know, your text for Funston tomorrow... Start, sit, trade,
draft questions, whatever you've got going on. Anything after 12
noon is eligible to get read. If it's at 11, 59,
59 or earlier, that's just the way it goes.

Speaker 4 (01:50:01):
Right?

Speaker 1 (01:50:01):
Simple as that. We have rules here. It's not like
the NBA. We have rules. By the way, the Clippers
are now complaining about the sanctions saying that's not what
the NBA told them. I like it.

Speaker 5 (01:50:16):
Oh.

Speaker 2 (01:50:16):
253, why would Kawhi get punished? It was on the team.

Speaker 1 (01:50:21):
He benefited financially.

Speaker 4 (01:50:24):
He got paid.

Speaker 1 (01:50:26):
He'd have to be the dumbest human being on the
planet not to know that in addition to his max
salary he's getting, he's getting other monetary or he's getting
other compensation on the side. Like, he took that compensation.
Did he not?

Speaker 6 (01:50:42):
Yes.

Speaker 1 (01:50:42):
If he didn't, then this would be not a story.
I think Kawhi probably wanted to get suspended because then
he wouldn't have to play because nobody dislikes playing basketball
in the NBA more than Kawhi Leonard. That dude never
wants to play. So I'm thinking that, uh, where's my
Keith Miller.

Speaker 3 (01:51:04):
Oh, here we go.

Speaker 1 (01:51:06):
Keith, Keith Miller. You'll get the last word today. And
anytime someone bangs on Lund, we're all in, we're all
in on that. Uh, Don't kid yourself. The 49ers left
early to get away from Lund and the substation.

Speaker 6 (01:51:18):
True.

Speaker 1 (01:51:19):
That's why they left early.

Speaker 3 (01:51:20):
Very true. That's exactly why they left early. Lund's back?
Let's get out of here.

Speaker 1 (01:51:25):
Let's get the hell out of Dodge now. As soon
as we possibly can. So that's what happened.

Speaker 3 (01:51:30):
Yeah, he's out.

Speaker 5 (01:51:31):
All right.

Speaker 1 (01:51:33):
Let's do this. Let's get a break in. Softie will
join us coming up next.

Speaker 3 (01:51:51):
All righty then.

Speaker 1 (01:51:51):
Here he is.

Speaker 3 (01:51:52):
All righty then.

Speaker 4 (01:51:54):
Yeah.

Speaker 9 (01:51:55):
Good stuff with Alex and Christo there today, pal. Talking
Apple Cup.

Speaker 1 (01:51:59):
Wait for it. Wait for it. Wait for it. Did
you hear the impression of me?

Speaker 7 (01:52:03):
No.

Speaker 1 (01:52:03):
From who? Just this guy. Here's the thing.

Speaker 3 (01:52:06):
Oh, do you have it? Talk back? You can play it.
You got it?

Speaker 1 (01:52:08):
Play it.

Speaker 5 (01:52:09):
Hey, it's Ian Furness.

Speaker 1 (01:52:10):
Okay, here's the deal.

Speaker 5 (01:52:12):
Wait for it.

Speaker 9 (01:52:14):
Okay, now wait for it.

Speaker 1 (01:52:15):
Wait for it.

Speaker 9 (01:52:15):
Here's the.

Speaker 4 (01:52:17):
Deal.

Speaker 9 (01:52:18):
Okay, now here's the deal.

Speaker 7 (01:52:19):
Wait for it.

Speaker 5 (01:52:21):
Wait for it.

Speaker 3 (01:52:22):
So good.

Speaker 4 (01:52:22):
Here's the deal.

Speaker 1 (01:52:25):
Okay, now here's the deal.

Speaker 5 (01:52:26):
Wait for it.

Speaker 1 (01:52:27):
Wait for it.

Speaker 4 (01:52:30):
Wait for it. Okay, here's the deal.

Speaker 3 (01:52:33):
Here's the deal. That should be the new name of
your show.

Speaker 1 (01:52:36):
Wait for it or here's the deal.

Speaker 3 (01:52:37):
Wait for it with Ian Furness.

Speaker 1 (01:52:38):
Wait for it or how about wait for it dot, dot, dot.
Here's the deal. Oh, God.

Speaker 3 (01:52:42):
I mean, I told you. I think it was yesterday.
It's pretty impressive, man.

Speaker 9 (01:52:46):
I mean, the way you can stretch and turn a
one-minute conversation into a ten-minute conversation.

Speaker 3 (01:52:51):
It's an hour. It's an hour. Very, very impressive.

Speaker 1 (01:52:52):
Do it for an hour today. Very impressive. Hey, I
told Anders this. The thing with the talkbacks.

Speaker 4 (01:52:58):
Right.

Speaker 1 (01:52:58):
It's a really interesting look into the mirror, but for
all of us.

Speaker 3 (01:53:02):
No doubt.

Speaker 1 (01:53:02):
Because everyone gets.

Speaker 3 (01:53:03):
No doubt.

Speaker 9 (01:53:04):
I haven't heard a Fane one yet. Have we heard
a Fane one? Well, there's got to be one for everybody.
I mean, you know, we do these little bracket things
in the summer when there's nothing going on, whatever. So
we got Chuck and Ashley. We got Greg and Jessamyn.
We got you two here, and then me and Dick.
I guess that's eight people. We got to include Furious Feltz.
Furious Feltz is already the winner. Somebody's got to get

(01:53:25):
bounced for Feltz in the eight-team bracket for the best
listener impression.

Speaker 1 (01:53:30):
I've never heard a Fane impression. Oh, there's got to
be somebody out there who's got one.

Speaker 9 (01:53:33):
I'm challenging— I've got a bunch of stuff on the
wall if you want to hear it.

Speaker 1 (01:53:36):
Well, I'm challenging our listeners. We need a Fane imitation tomorrow.

Speaker 2 (01:53:41):
Softy's playing with his wall.

Speaker 3 (01:53:42):
Hey, you know what? Keep that between us.

Speaker 1 (01:53:44):
What do you got here? Fire away.

Speaker 3 (01:53:46):
I've got a Fane.

Speaker 1 (01:53:47):
So just keep talking.

Speaker 6 (01:53:48):
Okay.

Speaker 1 (01:53:49):
Let me stretch this again for another hour. What do
you want me to do? Don't stoop there.

Speaker 3 (01:53:52):
Play that again. That one?

Speaker 8 (01:53:54):
Don't stoop there. The Gonzaga fan base is arrogant. I'm
one of the arrogant Gonzaga fans.

Speaker 3 (01:54:01):
Very true.

Speaker 5 (01:54:02):
What planet, what galaxy, what realm of spectrum are you
coming from?

Speaker 2 (01:54:08):
Oh, my gosh.

Speaker 1 (01:54:09):
So this one is an interesting one. This is an
interesting one. Let me play these back-to-back because I've got
something for you.

Speaker 4 (01:54:14):
Go ahead.

Speaker 8 (01:54:14):
The Gonzaga fan base is arrogant. I'm one of the
arrogant Gonzaga fans.

Speaker 1 (01:54:20):
It takes a special skill, does it not, to be
not only an arrogant Gonzaga fan, but an arrogant Washington fan. Sure.
He's got the daily double going.

Speaker 2 (01:54:29):
Those two crossover are so rare.

Speaker 1 (01:54:31):
It's unbelievable.

Speaker 9 (01:54:32):
He's the only one that I know, honestly, that suffers
from that affliction.

Speaker 1 (01:54:36):
It's The only thing more rare would be if you're—
Coos and dogs? No, huskies and ducks. Huskies and ducks.

Speaker 4 (01:54:43):
Right, yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:54:43):
Huskies and ducks.

Speaker 9 (01:54:44):
I mean, and if you've got, like, you know, interfaith marriage,
you know, between an Oregon fan and a Husky fan,
and you grew up on that house as a kid— Well,
you had one of those.

Speaker 3 (01:54:53):
I did. Yeah. But I was Jewish, and she was Mormon.

Speaker 1 (01:54:55):
Yeah, that's about as interfaith as it gets.

Speaker 3 (01:54:56):
That's about as— Yeah.

Speaker 9 (01:54:58):
That's about as far— But the Mormons have massive respect
for the Jews, by the way.

Speaker 1 (01:55:01):
They do?

Speaker 3 (01:55:02):
It really did work out, yeah. It did work out. Well,
because they know we have money. We can donate.

Speaker 4 (01:55:06):
Oh, yeah.

Speaker 3 (01:55:07):
That's why they're always banging on our wall. Hey, you
guys home? We want to build a new temple.

Speaker 1 (01:55:16):
The thing is, you're the only guy here who can
say that. They're back. The guys with the.

Speaker 3 (01:55:20):
Bikes and the ID cards are back. Hide the cash.

Speaker 1 (01:55:23):
Looking for my Jewish tithing.

Speaker 3 (01:55:25):
Hide the cash. Anyway, yeah. So, I mean, I can
see that. Like, you know, Dick is married to a cougar. Yes,
he is.

Speaker 9 (01:55:31):
Not a 50-year-old woman, but an actual Washington State graduate. So,
his kids deal with the UW wazoo thing, I'm sure,
all the time. You know, the problem, I was thinking
about this today on the way in. I was hearing
your show with Alex and M.

Speaker 3 (01:55:43):
Christo.

Speaker 7 (01:55:44):
Mm-hmm.

Speaker 9 (01:55:44):
And I was thinking about just the lack of juice
for this Apple Cup on Sunday.

Speaker 1 (01:55:50):
Are you surprised by that?

Speaker 3 (01:55:51):
No, not at all.

Speaker 9 (01:55:52):
But you don't give a damn. I mean, I don't
care on Sunday. But you're not showing it right now,
which is half the fun. Like in this office, there
used to be a lot of anxiety Apple Cup week.

Speaker 3 (01:56:04):
Yeah, no, there was.

Speaker 9 (01:56:05):
I mean, people would literally come to blows in the hallway.
You'd avoid people. You'd shove people up against the wall.

Speaker 2 (01:56:11):
Especially at the end of the Pac-12 tenure. Oh, man,
they'd be screaming and yelling.

Speaker 9 (01:56:15):
When both teams were decent or when the Huskies were
good and the Cougars were planning on ruining the party.

Speaker 3 (01:56:20):
There was a lot of anxiety in the building.

Speaker 9 (01:56:22):
I mean, part of it, I'll admit, is that we
don't have as many people here as we used to.
So those Cougar fans are no longer here, obviously. But
there's just no juice. Like you, I'm talking to Pride Moore,
I'm talking to Schubert. You're all Cougs, and none of
you are going to the game. No, I'm not going
to go. You're like the Cougar band. You're just passing.

Speaker 3 (01:56:40):
We don't want to go.

Speaker 9 (01:56:41):
They didn't have tickets for us. We don't have good
enough free seats. We're not going to the game. So
I don't like that because I like it when there's
a little juice around this thing.

Speaker 1 (01:56:50):
But you know this as a sports fan. You can't
manufacture emotion.

Speaker 8 (01:56:54):
Of course.

Speaker 3 (01:56:54):
Not a thousand percent.

Speaker 1 (01:56:55):
You can't manufacture.

Speaker 3 (01:56:56):
I mean, I'm on the air yesterday with Greg and Mario. Like,
let's go. We're like, you know, whatever. Greg's like, we're
going to kill them. They suck. Mario's like, shut up, man.

Speaker 9 (01:57:06):
It just doesn't have it. It doesn't have it this year.
It doesn't have it. It's simple. It's the first game.
It has no conference ramifications. It's not the end of
the year when you just said you could ruin a season.

Speaker 1 (01:57:21):
The funny thing is, this isn't funny, but ironically what
you said, Washington ruined Wazoo's season a hell of a
lot more than we did yours.

Speaker 3 (01:57:31):
Yeah, but your seasons were already ruined.

Speaker 4 (01:57:33):
No, no, no.

Speaker 3 (01:57:33):
Let's be honest. No, that's funny. By the time the
game came along.

Speaker 1 (01:57:37):
Like 0-2, the backwards pass.

Speaker 4 (01:57:39):
Totally.

Speaker 1 (01:57:39):
I mean, there's a lot of times.

Speaker 3 (01:57:40):
Really good team.

Speaker 1 (01:57:41):
A lot of times. You guys were like third in.

Speaker 3 (01:57:42):
The country, right?

Speaker 1 (01:57:42):
Yes, we were.

Speaker 3 (01:57:44):
Jason Gesser.

Speaker 1 (01:57:45):
You really didn't win.

Speaker 9 (01:57:46):
They should have won on the previous drive when Pickett
hit Kevin Ware for the touchdown. And they said he double-pumped,
which he never did at all. Trust me, I was there.
I saw it with my own eyes. But those were
the games that mattered. This game does not matter.

Speaker 3 (01:57:59):
You're right. You're right.

Speaker 9 (01:58:01):
Manufacturing emotion is a hard thing to do. Especially now
with 12 teams in the playoff. And we're talking about
how you can be a two-loss team and still play
for a championship.

Speaker 3 (01:58:09):
You guys can.

Speaker 4 (01:58:10):
Right.

Speaker 3 (01:58:10):
We can't.

Speaker 9 (01:58:11):
The early games just don't matter as much as they
used to. So I'm with you. I'd like to see
it put back in November, but this is the price
you pay, man. It's never going to go back.

Speaker 3 (01:58:20):
The price you pay. It won't ever go back. Well,
we'll see. To November, I should say. We'll see if
the Cougars, unlike the marching band, show up for the
game on Sunday.

Speaker 1 (01:58:27):
You know the other part of it, honestly?

Speaker 3 (01:58:28):
It's 1 o'clock.

Speaker 1 (01:58:29):
Honestly, the other part, I have no idea who the
hell's playing for us.

Speaker 3 (01:58:32):
Well, you got the kid from UC Davis.

Speaker 1 (01:58:34):
Okay, thanks.

Speaker 3 (01:58:34):
Pinnock.

Speaker 1 (01:58:35):
He was here a year ago. He lost by 60.
I shouldn't say that. The running backs are all back. Right.
The good news for us, which also could be bad news.

Speaker 5 (01:58:44):
Right.

Speaker 3 (01:58:45):
Nobody went with Jimmy. Are you a Kirby Moore guy?

Speaker 1 (01:58:47):
I think so, but I'll let you know on 4
o'clock on Sunday. Well, that's kind of unfair to judge
him on that.

Speaker 3 (01:58:55):
We'll find out.

Speaker 1 (01:58:55):
I'll give him a year. Although I learned last year
if you give a coach a year, it might not matter.

Speaker 3 (01:58:59):
He might be gone. Exactly. What are you doing today?
What's today? Wednesday? Today's Wednesday. Petros is on today.

Speaker 1 (01:59:05):
Petros.

Speaker 9 (01:59:05):
Talk some apple cup with Petros this afternoon. He's all
worked up about the USC San Jose State thing. You
saw that, by the way, online.

Speaker 1 (01:59:11):
12 people there?

Speaker 9 (01:59:12):
Well, he's getting people to rip in USC, and he
went after Seth Davis on social media.

Speaker 3 (01:59:17):
You don't know who we are. You're not a part
of this.

Speaker 5 (01:59:19):
Shut up.

Speaker 1 (01:59:20):
So we're going to talk to Petros at four. Petros,
who hates his own school, but he'll defend his school.

Speaker 3 (01:59:23):
Defending it for now. Well, because Slick Davis kind of
went after the L.A. sports fan, and.

Speaker 9 (01:59:28):
That didn't sit well with Petros. So we'll talk to
Petros at four. Larry Stone will be here at five
talking about whatever happens.

Speaker 3 (01:59:35):
In this game in Fenway.

Speaker 9 (01:59:37):
And then we'll do a little Hard Knocks recap coming
up as well, I think, at 6 p.m.

Speaker 4 (01:59:40):
Tonight.

Speaker 2 (01:59:40):
There you go.

Speaker 9 (01:59:41):
Final Hard Knocks. I think the whole show has been
kind of boring since episode one.

Speaker 1 (01:59:45):
Oh, I've loved it.

Speaker 3 (01:59:46):
I'm not saying that it's terrible.

Speaker 9 (01:59:48):
I just think it's kind of, it's just, like if
they did this 13 years ago when the LOB was here.
With Marshawn and Sherman.

Speaker 1 (01:59:57):
And Earl and Baldwin and Carroll.

Speaker 3 (02:00:01):
That's when you should have done it.

Speaker 1 (02:00:02):
I know.

Speaker 7 (02:00:03):
My God.

Speaker 9 (02:00:03):
The rules were different. How many people have said, this
team's kind of boring? They're kind of boring, right? And
I think the hard knocks is kind of showing that.
So anyway, that's what we have coming up.

Speaker 3 (02:00:11):
Hope to see you Sunday at the game, pal. You
need tickets? I got you covered. I'll text you. All right,
see you.

Speaker 9 (02:00:16):
For the mild-mannered and marginally objectionable Ian Furness, this is
panel day saying so long, everyone.
