so some gold medals coming up. Team USA will be
in action a little bit later on three o'clock Eastern
and they are big favorites against Serbia, sixteen point favorites.
Germany is giving six to France, Is that right, Marvin?
(01:07):
Germany favored by six against France. Correct, and they are
considered the defending world champs. Yep, So, Dennis Shrewder players, Wagner,
those are your stars for Germany against Wemby Joker by
the way over under his twenty and a half points
for a team Serbia.
Speaker 3 (01:27):
Yes, Marvin c plus players Evan Fournier, the French Larry
Bird and yeah, went off against Canada the other day.
Those guys are waiting for their opportunity to shine.
Speaker 2 (01:35):
The French Larry Bird. You don't hear that, you know?
Designation very often? It does every country have a the
Michael Jordan of or the Larry Bird or Magic Johnson of.
Speaker 3 (01:49):
Definitely you think so? Oh absolutely, Denny Shrewder.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
Well, no, he wouldn't be that guy because it would
be like death left Shrimp would have been the Larry Bird.
Speaker 3 (01:59):
Or like Tony Kuko. Yes, yes, okay, gotcha.
Speaker 4 (02:01):
Yes, yes, all right.
Speaker 2 (02:02):
Poll question for hour two is going to be what
seat no conor by the way, I am winded. We
were just doing the shot put if you're watching on peacock,
So we have a regulation shot put and Marvin is
right now in position gold medal position Seaton silver. I'm
there at the bronze comfortably at the bronze because it's Pauli.
(02:26):
And then Fritzie. Fritzie was spinning around like Tim Tebow
used to when he'd get the ball go back to pass,
and he was spinning the wrong way. And then I
think you threw it about three or four feet there.
Speaker 3 (02:37):
I'm dead last, Yes you were. That's like the running
in the Milwaukee Yes, very far behind.
Speaker 2 (02:42):
Yes, yes, all right.
Speaker 5 (02:44):
Poll question for hour two is going to be one.
We got up there right now. Josh Allen was sticking
up for his teammates or happy Stefan Diggs is in Houston.
Speaker 2 (02:54):
Okay, let me play this for you because we did.
Wonder could he have said this better? I think when
he started he probably could have. But then at the
very end, I think he rallied at any.
Speaker 4 (03:05):
Point during can have you missed Stefan?
Speaker 6 (03:10):
I mean, I think Steph's a great player and what
he brought to this team was was special.
Speaker 2 (03:17):
So miss is is?
Speaker 6 (03:19):
I don't know if i'd say miss You know, he
was a guy that was reliable, you can you can
look to He's gonna have the juice each and every day.
I'm sure he's bringing over there in Houston.
Speaker 2 (03:28):
So definitely. Yeah, you can't say that you don't miss that.
Speaker 6 (03:32):
But I am very happy with what we got going
on here and how hard the guys have been working.
Speaker 2 (03:35):
And yeah, okay, he rallied. He rallied. He's probably going
to miss him during the regular season, but right now,
he doesn't miss him, doesn't miss the drama. The women's
Olympic basketball team will be an action against Australia. They
are seventeen point favorites Team USA. They extended it's a
winning streak to fifty nine consecutive games with a comfortable
(03:58):
win over Nigeria. Asia Wilson dominated again. All right, So
Charles Parkley will join us coming up, and we'll talk
some football a little bit later on with the Motherships
Lewis Riddicks, South Palantonio on the mess that is the
Philadelphia Eagles. Sal Powell will join us coming up.
Speaker 7 (04:16):
Yes, Paul, this just in Dan a little said. Remember
the Chicago White Sox, that lovely streak they were on. Yeah,
they finally won a game. Yeah, and how do they
celebrate winning their game? They fired their manager, Dan. They
just announced the Chicago White Sox on their social.
Speaker 8 (04:30):
Media, just turning things around.
Speaker 2 (04:32):
Yeah, they were one in a row.
Speaker 7 (04:34):
Chicago White Sox today announced that Pedro Griffall has been
dismissed as a clubes manager.
Speaker 2 (04:39):
They wish him the best and of course in the
future endeavors.
Speaker 5 (04:43):
Yeah, I think he lost the locker room.
Speaker 8 (04:45):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (04:45):
So like after eighteen went at losses, are like, we're
going to.
Speaker 2 (04:48):
Stick nineteen twenty Nope, yeah, we're going to write the
ship here twenty one losses, then you win and then
all of a sudden, you go, you were going to
fire this poor guy? All right, Now this guy is
not poor. He is wealthy, and he is not retiring.
He's Charles Bark, the Hall of Famer TNT inside the
(05:08):
NBA analyst. All right, let's get to it. How did
we come up with this decision? We're not retiring and
we're staying at TNT after this NBA season.
Speaker 4 (05:20):
Oh, TNT. I told her they had to come meet
with me.
Speaker 9 (05:23):
They flew to Philly last week and I said, what,
what's what's the deal. And they said, hey, we're gonna
keep doing the show.
Speaker 4 (05:35):
And I'm like what And They're like, we're gonna keep
doing the show.
Speaker 2 (05:40):
What does that mean? That's what I said?
Speaker 9 (05:48):
Okay, So so I said, hey, y'all know, y'all know,
my number one priority is to keep people working at Turner.
That's always been my number one. Porty and Dan, they
say they're gonna keep doing the show, and I said,
(06:09):
do it, I'll take a pay cut. I said, I'll
take a pay cut. They said that's not necessary, and
they said, we're gonna continue doing the show. I don't
have any idea what that means.
Speaker 2 (06:23):
Wait, you had to ask them when they said that that,
what do you mean after this season we're going to
continue to do the show. And they said what.
Speaker 4 (06:31):
I think they're gonna try to figure it out.
Speaker 8 (06:34):
Uh.
Speaker 9 (06:35):
I mean because we won't have the NBA. Uh So
I think they're gonna try to figure it out. But
my number one concern Dan has always been the people
at Turner. So even if we do something, a lot
of people turn it gonna keep their job. Like I say, Dan,
I have zero idea what we're gonna do.
Speaker 2 (06:57):
Is this going to be a sports show, a nightly
sports show with you guys that you don't have the NBA?
But are you creating your own sports center type show?
Speaker 9 (07:07):
Well, first of all, I don't think we're gonna do
it every night. We're not gonna work it every night.
Speaker 2 (07:19):
That's not that's not gonna happen, Okay.
Speaker 9 (07:21):
But I truly believe they wanted to keep people employed
at Turner, which is what's my number one priority. And
I think we're gonna have to try to figure it
out as we go.
Speaker 4 (07:33):
O Grey. They couldn't get They couldn't give me any
concrete plans because they don't have any concrete plans.
Speaker 2 (07:40):
Could you have gotten out of your contract though, because
you talked about they have to let you out of
your contract. Did you try to get out of your
contract to go and talk. I know you talked to
the other networks that are going to carry the NBA.
Speaker 4 (07:55):
I asked them, do they want me to take a
pay cut?
Speaker 9 (07:58):
Because once they told me we were gonna keep people
at plawed Turner, I was good to go. But then
that's been my only concern. Like when I said I
was going to retire, that's because I didn't want to
go work for another network. You know, everybody was out
there time by chall said this for this, for this,
The only reason I said I was going to retire
because I didn't want to go through the house of
(08:18):
break it in another crew and go into another network.
And when they flew up last week, I was told
this shot when they said, no, we're going to keep
this show going, and I'm like, well, what are we
gonna do. They're like, we'll figure it out in a
year and a half. Yeah, that's exactly what happened. But
like I say, hey, once I could keep people employed
(08:41):
at Turner because then I got to tell you something.
I've heard some of the most horrific stories the last
six months from people I work with, because you know,
they're telling me and I, you know what, in my
heart was really hurting because and I'm not trying to
be all this at whatever the fact, like people telling
you like, yo, man, I'm married, I got kids, I
(09:02):
got a mortgage, and I'm gonna get fired. I've never
been in that situation before, but to hear about it
from some of my closest friends at Turner. Once they
said those people are gonna keep their jobs, I'm like,
whatever y'all decide to do. Hey, if I'm hey, listen,
I don't know anything about tennis, but I know we
(09:23):
just got the French open, you know, so like, hey,
I don't need paride. Welcome to Parie.
Speaker 2 (09:30):
My friends like, are you gonna be like Snoop Dog
for TNT?
Speaker 4 (09:38):
No, I wouldn't do. I don't want to be on
TV that much.
Speaker 9 (09:42):
Listen, the good thing about it, if they get crazy
going forward, I don't have to stay And and Dan,
I'll be honest with you. My biggest thing right now
what I've been thinking about, Like, I love TNT, I
love everybody behind the See the reason I'm staying at
TA so people can keep their jobs, But that does
(10:03):
not mean I'm gonna stay there forever. I can promise
you that that's not gonna happen. I just I'm just
happy that I was able to. I'm just happy a
lot of people turn to GON keep their job. That
was my number one priority.
Speaker 2 (10:16):
Charles Barkley, Hall of Famer, not retiring, staying at TNT.
Today's the anniversary. It was on this date, nineteen ninety
two that the Dream Team beat Croatia one seventeen to
eighty five. What do you remember about that day that night.
Speaker 9 (10:32):
I've said before, the Olympics are the greatest poor have
been in the world by far. You know, I've been
to a lot of great stuff, but there's nothing like
the Olympics. You've seen some of the great stories. Man,
some of the stories are amazing. The girl from Saint
Lucian who beat Shikari, first medal ever for that country.
(10:54):
A man who ran down the two favorites, and the
four hundred yesterday was with the four hundred to eight hundred.
Speaker 2 (10:59):
Might have been four hundred with Quincy.
Speaker 4 (11:02):
Yes, that was incredible.
Speaker 9 (11:04):
I was like, dang, cause you know, they were all
focused on the two guys that was supposed to win.
But his kick down the stretch was incredible. You know, man,
I got Dan, you got to hook me up with
Katie Ladeci. Man. I got to meet that girl at
some point. She's a flat out monster beast.
Speaker 4 (11:22):
I got. I got to meet her.
Speaker 2 (11:23):
Okay, So how much of a head start could she
give you? If I said you're gonna swim up and back,
If she she gave you fifty meters head start, I
need more than that, Well, how much you're gonna need?
Speaker 4 (11:40):
What's race? The one that sees the best at that
was she.
Speaker 2 (11:43):
Like winning no, no, no, no, no, this that she would
win by a day over you. I'm talking about like
you'd be finishing the next day. So I'm just saying
one lap up and back. Would you get in the
pool against Katie Ladeci and swim fifty she swims one hundred.
Speaker 4 (12:02):
Man, I'd have to take my shirt off in public.
Nobody wants to see that.
Speaker 2 (12:07):
You look pretty good.
Speaker 9 (12:09):
I'm not Hey, hey, listen, man, I'm not good enough
to take my shirt off in public. Right now, I'm
getting there, but I'm not taking my shirt off in public.
Speaker 2 (12:19):
Now, take me back to when you won the gold
medal with the Dream Team. What do you remember about
How did you guys celebrate winning.
Speaker 9 (12:26):
We celebrated with champagne. But Dan, I will tell you something.
When they played the national anthem, Man, you know, and
we you know, I'm with Michael Magic, Scotty Magic and
Larry and those guys, and so not a lot excite
those guys. But man, when they are playing the national anthem, Dan,
it is one of the most surreal things because I've
(12:46):
ever experienced. I mean, when they're playing that national anthem
and you sit standing there, man, it's a really great feeling.
I understand why Scotty Shuffler was all emotional, because I
hate to say, because Americans, we are about far away
the least patriotic people in the world. We don't even
realize we live in the greatest country in the history
(13:08):
of civilization. But those people, know, those countries that like
when you spend time with the other athletes in from countries,
like that's their greatest accomplishment in life. And even though
they can't win a medal, they still better than nine
to nine percent of people in the world. Like when
you're from one of these little countries and you get
to the Olympics, you might not even you know, no,
(13:30):
most of them can't meddle obviously, but you're still one
of the one percent of the best of what you
do in the world. But anybody who gets to the Olympics,
that's one of the greatest accomplishments you can have. And
I'm not even talking about the basketball because that's actually
you know, that's selective, that's selective. But if you play,
(13:51):
if you play another sport and get to the Olympics,
that is one of the greatest accomplishment in human history.
Speaker 2 (13:59):
I ain't know much has been made about Jason Tatum
got benched, didn't get much playing time. We had Mike
Krzyzewsky on he said he made you know, coaching staff
made everybody pledge that we're gonna do whatever it takes
to win a gold medal. But then this became such
a big story. I don't remember any other Olympics where
we went, Oh, such and such is not playing now.
(14:19):
Tatum's twenty seven. You just win a title. I understand that,
But where do you stand in playing time with depending
on how big of a star you are.
Speaker 9 (14:30):
Well, everybody's got to play. If you're going to go
to the Olympics, everybody deserve a play. And let's get
one thing straight. I don't think it's that much of
a drop off putting Jason Tatum in the game. I mean,
come on, man, and Steve Kerr, you know, he just
he just like Katie and Lebron and bam, they're all great,
(14:51):
but at this stage of their career, Jason Tatum might
be the best four.
Speaker 4 (15:01):
And that's no disrespect any of those guys.
Speaker 9 (15:03):
Lebron's in the Goat conversation, Kevin Durant is great, Damn
is great. But you can't tell me right now, like, yeah,
I might, Jason Tatum might be the best out.
Speaker 4 (15:14):
Of those four.
Speaker 9 (15:16):
And if and if you pick one of those other
guys it's a minimum drop off.
Speaker 4 (15:21):
So and the one advent as the United States. God
his depth, Damn.
Speaker 9 (15:25):
Like when that one of these other teams go to
the bench, it's like night and day. Like you take
one of these guys out of the United States out
of the game, it's just between brunch and lunch. Brother,
that's all the difference. But I'll tell you what, I'm
worried about that game today against Serbia.
Speaker 4 (15:44):
Yeah, because Serbia has been playing dead Man.
Speaker 2 (15:49):
Oh yeah, oh really.
Speaker 4 (15:51):
Yeah, because those other games didn't matter because they knew that,
because that's the thing about the Olympics.
Speaker 9 (15:57):
Those first the first game was just a practice game.
It didn't matter at all. The second game didn't matter either,
because the only thing matters when you get to the
knockout round. So I think the United States will win
and should win. But this game scares me because today
the jokers, he's the best player in the world, and
I think they're like, hey, let's let them win this
(16:19):
preseason game. Let's let them win this early game. They're
gonna be overconfident because we only got to be better
than them from this one game. That's thee And so
I'm really worried about this game today, because, like I said, Dan,
none of those early games matter until you get to
the knockout round because you know you're gonna get to
(16:40):
the knockout round if you wanted the best team, and
then it's a one game elimination.
Speaker 4 (16:46):
So I'm really looking forward to watching the game today.
Speaker 2 (16:49):
Are you doing more Subway commercials?
Speaker 4 (16:53):
Yes?
Speaker 9 (16:54):
I have really enjoyed. As a matter of fact, I
got to shoot one next week. I've really enjoyed working
with Subway. They've been great to work with. They've been fun,
and uh, I like it better not being on camera.
I think they screwed up one time putting me on camera.
Like I said, no, because I lied to people for
(17:16):
like two years Dan, They're like, yo, man, is that
your voice in the Subway commercial?
Speaker 4 (17:20):
A right, No, man, I was just I was just
jerking around with my friends.
Speaker 9 (17:25):
I told her for like two years, No, that's not
my voice, man, it's somebody else. And then finally after
because I've really enjoyed working with them.
Speaker 2 (17:34):
Don't you take the summer off? Why don't you bring
somebody else in just to switch it up a little.
Speaker 9 (17:38):
Then No, you know what's been really cool and amazing
every time because I shit, won't like every three months
they bring somebody in. That's what's really been amazing. You
could think about it when I started my first Commerdans,
I think it's been like six years now. Wow, it
was Tom Brady, Sabrina, Rena Williams, Meghan Rapino. Uh so
(18:05):
now you know. Now we're up to my homes. I
did one with a doll last year, like a few
couple of months ago. I don't know if they're showing
it in the States now they have at Kelsey. I
mean they add people all the time. I'm curious who
they're gonna add next week. Hello, Dan, I got no
control over who they put in the come.
Speaker 2 (18:27):
Yeah you do?
Speaker 4 (18:28):
Oh yeah, okay, yeah you do?
Speaker 2 (18:30):
You save TNT you can? You can save Subway with
putting me in there?
Speaker 9 (18:35):
Well, Dan, I will say this, man, out of all
the things I've accomplished in my TV career, keeping these
people jobs at Turner is the coolest thing for me ever, because, man,
I'm telling you, I've been with these guys twenty four years.
Speaker 4 (18:51):
They're like family to me.
Speaker 9 (18:53):
Like I said, I'm not worried about me Ernie, Kenny
and Shaq, but to hear my friends they have my friends.
A lot of them talk about being because I've never
never been fired before and had to worry about anything,
and to hear the distress under their voices. And you know,
(19:13):
I'm gonna tell you something I haven't told anybody. So
there's about fifty employees that I'm giving five thousand dollars
each too, to show them how much I love and
appreciate them. And our government and Turner are trying to
make them pay taxes on it. And now I'm trying
(19:36):
to come up with the cash. So if you can
help me come up with the cash, they're not gonna
pay taxes on it. I don't give a damn what
the government says them shysters.
Speaker 2 (19:45):
Well, how did you get paid at Auburn? So, however
you got paid at Auburn, you just pay them that
same way at Turner.
Speaker 9 (19:53):
You don't how many hands I'd have to see five
thousand dollars.
Speaker 2 (19:58):
You got those hundred dollars hend shakes at Auburn.
Speaker 9 (20:01):
Well, you know the thing that was funny, Dan, It
was always like a few alumni side and some of
them shaking hand and gave you like twenty dollars, And
then a couple I'm shaking hand and gave you like
one hundred dollars. Hey, we start taking them quick showers.
We could get there one hundred dollars handshake, Hey, we did.
Speaker 4 (20:23):
We usuld call it.
Speaker 9 (20:24):
We'd take them drive by showers because guys figured out
who was giving hundreds.
Speaker 4 (20:31):
Got so then if you took your time.
Speaker 9 (20:34):
I always got screwed Dan, because I had to talk
to the press, I had to take time. I had
to shake hands on all the loots only gave me
twenty dollars. I had to take my hands and get
to like three hundred dollars.
Speaker 2 (20:45):
I think you did okay, Hey, congratulations on the decision.
I know it weighed heavily on you, and it's always
great to talk to you. Enjoy the rest of the summer.
Speaker 4 (20:53):
But all right, thinking man, Hey, take you in the nerves.
Take care of yourself.
Speaker 2 (20:56):
Brother, All right, nerds, take care of yourself. That's Charles Barkley.
We'll take a break. We'll talk some football. Do the
Steelers really have a quarterback controversy? That's next.

Speaker 2 (21:49):
Guy, he's one of our favorites. Love to talk to.
Lewis Riddick, ESPN, NFL college football analyst and former NFL
player and front office pro personnel. Let me play something
here with Mike Tomlin, and then you tell me if
you were his GM, how you would react to hearing this.
Speaker 4 (22:08):
Would you still categorize this as a quarterback competition? If
it is, how do you wait?
Speaker 10 (22:13):
What happens in the practice field here versus what happens
in a stadium.
Speaker 4 (22:16):
Very much is a competition.
Speaker 9 (22:18):
What happens in stadium is weighted heavier than what happens
in a practice setting because it's more game like.
Speaker 2 (22:25):
He just opened it up. So now it's on do
you need to say it to the media if you've
already probably said it to your quarterbacks.
Speaker 11 (22:38):
I think in this case then he does because remember
when when Russ was signeding, when Justin signed, like before
this training camp started, you know, his words were that
Russ has the pole position, and everybody kind of took
that to mean, well, this is Russ's job to lose.
It's not really a competition because you know how it goes,
Like when you're trying to get a quarterback ready for
(22:58):
the regular season and you have in your mind that
maybe one guy has the pole position over the other,
that guy has to get the majority of reps because otherwise,
if you're trying to get two guys ready, you're getting
nobody ready.
Speaker 8 (23:10):
So you got to give one guy more reps than
the other.
Speaker 11 (23:12):
So now, if I'm Justin Field's in that situation where
I was number two, you know you're sitting there. You're
still trying to do everything you can to put pressure
on the dude who has the pole position, but you
kind of understand that maybe the season is going to
go the way that coach laid this out with the
initial depth chart. But I'm gonna keep trying the pressure.
I mean, maybe I'll take the job from him later.
Now now everything's different, everything's different, and if I'm Russ,
(23:37):
I'm sitting there going, man, I got to get my
behind on this field quick, because.
Speaker 8 (23:41):
I know that every day that.
Speaker 11 (23:43):
Justin has taking reps that were designed to be for me,
there's another day for them to go on the personnel meetings.
And I've been in these where you meet every day
as a coaching staff in the personnel department and you
run down every guy on the list, and I promise you,
they're spending more time talking about quarterback than any position.
And you're gonna have people. You're gonna have Arthur Smith.
I'm not speaking for Arthur, but I know Arthur loved Justin.
(24:04):
I talked him down at UNC's pro day watching Drake May.
Speaker 4 (24:08):
I promise that.
Speaker 11 (24:08):
He's sitting there going, hey, man, Russ got to get
out here because we don't have anything. Really, we have
no allegiance to either one of these guys. So if
we really want.
Speaker 8 (24:19):
To make this a competition, Russ has to compete and
see that. That's the thing. Now, this is totally up there.
I would not be shocked in the least.
Speaker 11 (24:28):
It's probably gonna be one of the most watched preseason
games of this weekend when they play tomorrow, when they
play the Texans, that is going to be I believe
they played the Texans right, That is going to be
something that all of Pittsburgh's gonna be watching because I
have a feeling, based on my conversations that if Russ
or that rather, if Justin can continue to ascend like
(24:51):
he is looking in practice, he's gonna start week one.
Speaker 8 (24:55):
Well, he's gonna be open day starter. See, I thought
he's start at some point.
Speaker 2 (25:00):
Anyway, I did too, but I thought, you have to
start Russ, and then if you go to Justin, it's
easier to go back to Russ and Justin goes back
to the bench as opposed to the other way around.
Speaker 8 (25:12):
But you know what, in a normal situation, I totally
agree with you.
Speaker 11 (25:15):
In a situation where this was a guy who has
a lot of equity build up in an organization, and
you know what, he has a history, he's won some games,
he's ingreated this in this case, Look, yeah, there's one
guy who has a bigger resume, who won a Super Bowl,
who came close to winning another one. But he didn't
do that for you, so you know, like for me,
and like how you phrase this question in the beginning,
(25:36):
like and you said, look, if you're the GM, I'm
kind of reminding Mike of that.
Speaker 8 (25:41):
Hey, we don't owe Russ anything. We don't owe him
the benefit of the doubt.
Speaker 11 (25:49):
We owe ourselves in this organization to put the best
guy out there, regardless.
Speaker 8 (25:54):
Of how this plays out.
Speaker 11 (25:55):
And I think we say all the time the best
abilities availability. This is one of those one of those
cases where that could be the deciding factor.
Speaker 2 (26:04):
Give me the team who needs to sign trade for
Brandon Nyuk.
Speaker 11 (26:11):
The team that needed to was was New England. They
needed a guy like that. Drake may needs a guy
like that. Alex van peltoffensive coordinator needs a guy like that.
Mayo needs a guy like that. New England needs a
guy like that, who can average over eighteen yards for reception,
who can take the slant and go ninety, who can
catch the fifty yard bomb down the sideline. They needed
(26:34):
him whatever Fellow. However, that fell apart.
Speaker 8 (26:38):
It fell apart.
Speaker 4 (26:38):
Well.
Speaker 2 (26:39):
What seemed like they gave him an offer that he
couldn't refuse, but he refused.
Speaker 8 (26:42):
It refused it right exactly. I mean that's what it
seems like. You're right.
Speaker 11 (26:46):
They needed it, and they tried to they took their shot.
And that was something I'd been talking about on TV,
Like New England has the cap space, and.
Speaker 8 (26:53):
They had the draft capital, and they have the need.
It makes perfect sense.
Speaker 11 (26:56):
If you're Brandon, You're sitting there going, okay, man, you know,
I don't know what New England's supposed I mean what
Cleveland supposed to offer is. And I don't know where
San Francisco sits as far as what they've already offered him,
but I could probably it's probably safe to say.
Speaker 8 (27:12):
That they're not in the neighborhood of what New England was.
Speaker 2 (27:15):
Yeah, thirty million dollars. It just feels like if I'm Pittsburgh,
I gotta get him. Yeah, and I got to keep
away from Cleveland as well. But like it's twofold there.
Speaker 8 (27:27):
I'm with you.
Speaker 11 (27:28):
It's just it would just be a it would be
a real departure from what Pittsburgh normally does, especially at
that position, where they have drafted and developed better than
anybody in the league at that position.
Speaker 8 (27:39):
But I'll tell you what, if they did oh boy.
Speaker 2 (27:43):
Okay, how does that change what your expectation level would
be for Pittsburgh if they got Ayuk.
Speaker 11 (27:53):
Look, I'm someone who believes and has been running at
the mouth about the fact that I believe that that
wide received has become the second most important position in
all football behind quarterback. And that's not the diminish pass
rusher or offensive tackle. But I just believe that these
guys because the way they can flip games on their
head with one play and generate excitement in terms of
(28:16):
bringing in other players and bringing in fans and generating money,
they can do it better than any other position other
than quarterback.
Speaker 2 (28:22):
Would you put them ahead of Baltimore if they got Ayuk?
Speaker 11 (28:27):
Yes, Baltimore has a lot of change, a lot of
change now, especially on the defensive side of the ball
on offensive line.
Speaker 8 (28:33):
We'll see how it.
Speaker 11 (28:34):
Plays out, We'll see how Derek fits in, We'll see
how the wide receiver corps continues to develop. Yeah, I
would right now. Pittsburgh is not what's interesting now. Pittsburgh's
not afraid of Baltimore. They love playing Baltimore and their
record speaks for itself. How they have played that football
team in particular, i'd put them. Yeah, it would be
like a three it. Look, it could be between Pittsburgh
(28:55):
Baltimore's since Seacly they're all right there at the top.
That's a toss up, and Pittsburg has as good a
shot as anybody to win the North for sure, if
they get even without him, they do.
Speaker 2 (29:05):
Lewis Riddick of the Mothership NFL college football analyst, how
many Super Bowl contenders in the NFC?
Speaker 11 (29:16):
Look, you got Philly, I think you've got you got
Green Bay, Detroit for sure.
Speaker 4 (29:22):
In the North.
Speaker 8 (29:24):
I don't know if you have any in the South.
Speaker 11 (29:26):
Maybe Tampa, so you've got one, two, three, plus San Francisco,
maybe the Rams, So there's probably four really that right
now you can really hang your hat on. Dallas is
a friend super Bowl team. Minnesota will see what happens
with their quarterback position. Tampa Bay is going to be
right there.
Speaker 2 (29:44):
And you like Philly more than Dallas, Yes, for sure.
Speaker 11 (29:49):
And I know that there's a lot of a lot
of talk coming out of there right now, like the
they've really there's a lot of stuff going on right
now about last year, which as if last year even
matters this year, But that's all they're taught king about
there right now, on paper, the team is loaded, man,
They're loaded. And really that's all we got to go
on right now, is how teams look when we're evaluating
the roster. Dallas, you tell me how the offensive line
(30:12):
is gonna play, and whether the running game is gonna
be able to support Dak and how Ceed's gonna.
Speaker 8 (30:15):
Look when he gets there. Is the run?
Speaker 11 (30:18):
Is the run defense going to be better than it
was last year? Is the front seven stronger down the middle?
Because it was it was an Achilles.
Speaker 8 (30:23):
Hill for him last year. So I don't I don't
know Tampa, I can just I can tell you this,
though Tampa has done some work. The offensive line is
going to be strong, Baker, we'll see how.
Speaker 11 (30:36):
We'll see what happens now that Dave Canalis isn't there,
who everybody loves, and we'll see what he does for
Bryce and Carolina. But Tampa's defense is gonna be legit
and Atlanta could be sneaky. Now they really couldn't see that.
That's what's what you know.
Speaker 2 (30:50):
There's always a team that can.
Speaker 11 (30:53):
In the rams. Hey, Matthew doesn't get enough credit. Sean
had Now, what is fourth different defensive coordinator, you know
now that he lost Raheem. I mean, he's been churning
through defensive coordinators in a good way for good reasons.
But I really think there's four that are legit. We'll
see what happens with the rest.
Speaker 2 (31:13):
The Chargers situation. With Harbaugh's philosophy to take that Michigan
style and now bring it to the Chargers. What does
that mean for Justin Herbert's development? Even though Jim played
the position in the NFL, but it feels like he
wants big offensive line, he wants to run it down
your throat, he wants to play that tough defense. What's
(31:33):
that mean for Justin Herbert?
Speaker 8 (31:35):
Yeah?
Speaker 11 (31:36):
You know what, this is one of those where you're right, like,
what does it mean for him? As far as can
he be a four thousand and forty five hundred yard passer,
thirty five touchdown guy?
Speaker 8 (31:47):
You would probably think from a statistical.
Speaker 11 (31:48):
Standpoint, that's not going to be what it's going to
That's not how it's going to manifest. It's going to
be about can they just win more games? Can they
get can they get into the playoffs? Win more games
maybe to be a you know, be a conference title contender.
A real one, and I think you're gonna have to
be willing to accept that, Like what as a Charger
(32:09):
fan or even as ownership as a GM, are you
willing to take your prize possession and say, look, statistically,
he's gonna fall down a little bit in terms of
how much we put on him because of how much
we put on him, but we gain the ability to
really contempt I think that's that's obviously, I think something
they're willing to do because ultimately in the NFL, that's
(32:31):
that's all that matters is winning super Bowls.
Speaker 8 (32:34):
You know, it's just you know how that goes. Dan,
you know the deal.
Speaker 11 (32:37):
I mean, Dan Marino put up numbers every year, but
the team couldn't win, and so he's not even talked
about as a guy who's one of the greats.
Speaker 2 (32:47):
Well, so I was wondering about this before I let
you go that Tom Brady won more Super Bowls?
Speaker 4 (32:52):
Yep?
Speaker 2 (32:53):
Is there a chance that Patrick Mahomes can be a
greater quarterback if he doesn't tom Brady's super Bowl numbers?
Does that make sense?
Speaker 4 (33:04):
Yeah?
Speaker 11 (33:04):
There'll be people who fall on both sides. There'll be
people who already think, look, he's a greater talent than
what Tom was.
Speaker 2 (33:11):
But but so is Aaron Rodgers.
Speaker 11 (33:14):
Right, but right so, But the reason why Tom's considered
the greatest, and that's not to diminish how he was
as a passer, because he was a great passer. But
ultimately quarterbacks are it's about winning. So unless he can
match and or surpass it. Look if Patrick, given his talent,
Dan can match or surpass Tom's.
Speaker 8 (33:33):
Winning, I don't know if anyone will ever ever come.
Speaker 11 (33:40):
Or be able to top that, because that's that's like
a supernova, so to speak. Right, I mean, you had
maybe the most talented thrower player leader ever at the
position who was also the greatest winner.
Speaker 8 (33:55):
You're talking Jordan type stuff.
Speaker 2 (33:57):
Now, the worst team in the NFL this season will be.
Speaker 4 (34:01):
Oh, I hate this question.
Speaker 8 (34:07):
You're trying to you're trying to stick.
Speaker 4 (34:09):
A whole fan base.
Speaker 2 (34:10):
Then you're being objective. You're an analyst.
Speaker 4 (34:15):
I know, I know, I know.
Speaker 2 (34:22):
You can say Carolina, nobody's gonna be mad.
Speaker 11 (34:24):
At They've done so many good you know, then everybody
loves dig Oh though Carolina or New England Okay, one
of those two. Oh so now you're gonna you're gonna
piss off two fan bases.
Speaker 4 (34:38):
I know, I mean, why what I mean?
Speaker 8 (34:40):
Why stop on one?
Speaker 2 (34:43):
Always great to talk to you. Thanks for joining us. Lewis,
you got a Lewis Riddick ESPN NFL college football analyst.
He was in the front office with Washington and also, uh,
they Eagles. I love that. I hate these questions? Did
that sound like an ESPN get up question from Greeney? Luis,
who do you think was gonna be the worst team
in the NFL? All right, let me somehow you have
(35:08):
to work in Aaron Rodgers and the Cowboys and all
of that. Maybe Tim Tebow. All right, let's sake a break.
We'll get phone calls coming up. We'll check in on
the Eagles. Sal Pallantonio will join us coming up top
of the hour. We're back after this.
Speaker 1 (35:27):
Be sure to catch the live edition of The Dan
Patrick Show weekdays at nine am Eastern six am Pacific
on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 2 (35:37):
I know you have to go out of your way
to find him, but he's worth finding. Bobby Witt Junior
the third two homers a double four RBIs. He's hitting
almost three point fifty twenty two homers, eighty four RBIs.
He's must see TV doing it at the shortstop position. Also,
this player has the most leadoff home runs in baseball history,
(36:01):
one to one.
Speaker 5 (36:02):
Swung on hit deep to center on the run, his
pot has he's looking up.
Speaker 1 (36:06):
And he won't get it.
Speaker 8 (36:07):
It's gone.
Speaker 2 (36:08):
And Kyle Schwarber with his third home run of the night.
Speaker 11 (36:12):
He's gone to left, he's gone to right, and now
he goes to center.
Speaker 2 (36:18):
Kyle Schwarber has ninety nine home runs out of the
lead off spot, most by any leadoff hitter in Major
League Baseball. And he's one of those guys when you
see him come to the plate, you're like, no, no, no,
he's batting out a turn like you're supposed to be
batting fifth in the lineup there, big boy. And he
had three bombs last night.
Speaker 7 (36:37):
Yes, Paul, there is something I don't understand about analytics
for Kyle Schwarber being a leadoff hitter. I know he's
got power, but he never hits for average. I mean,
this guy is a low average guy. You know, his
on base percentages not great.
Speaker 2 (36:49):
So over the last three seasons he has ninety nine
home runs. That's the most of any leadoff hitter in
Major League Baseball not Major League Baseball history. Did Ricky
Henderson have the most leadoff home runs in baseball history?
I think he did.
Speaker 3 (37:02):
I'd be shocked if it wasn't him.
Speaker 2 (37:04):
Yes, he had a pretty big number of their leadoff
home runs. Yeah, PAULI.
Speaker 7 (37:09):
Ricky Henderson number one with eighty one, George Springer number
two with fifty eight.
Speaker 2 (37:14):
Wait, whoa stand of a day?
Speaker 1 (37:18):
Stand a day?
Speaker 10 (37:20):
Stantuta day?
Speaker 1 (37:21):
Stant outa day?
Speaker 2 (37:23):
This is the start of the day. Oh, you know what,
out of the leadoff spot, but leading off a game. Oh,
that's different. So Schwerber has ninety nine home runs while
being in the leadoff spot but not leading off a game.
Got it. So it's a little little trickier there, you know.
Thinking back on Charles Barkley who joined us at the
(37:45):
top of the hour, the fact that he's going to
stay at TNT, the TNT is going to figure this
out to keep everybody together, is really interesting, because what
do you do? We don't know. You have this talent
and you have this team. Now what do you do?
Can you have a highlight show? How many nights do
(38:07):
you do it? Can you do the NBA? Do you
send these guys out for other sporting events. But they
have a year and a half to figure this out.
But the fact, and I'm still wondering. I don't want
to accuse anybody of anything. I'm wondering if TNT wasn't
willing to let Charles out of his contract, because there's
(38:27):
only one Charles when he goes, then you pretty much
you know your sports department is it's going to take
a big slide there. But you got him, now, how
do you utilize him? And then I wonder, can you
do sort of that Snoop Dogg role with Charles where
he's going to all these different events, But you still
have Ernie, and you have Shaq, and you have Kenny,
(38:49):
you still have march madness there. But how are you
going to utilize him? Paying him the money you're going
to pay him and everybody else? And your stock just
took a huge, huge hit yesterday. I wonder if they
said we're not going to let you go, We'll figure
it out, not gonna let you out of the building.
(39:11):
But Charles staying, and he said it was really important
to be able to keep those people been with him,
a lot of them for over twenty years and keeping
them together Shawn and Oregon. Hey, Shaan, what's on your
mind today?
Speaker 12 (39:24):
Hey, thanks for taking my call.
Speaker 4 (39:25):
Dan.
Speaker 12 (39:26):
And I'm not really buying what Charles Barkley said about
keeping his job just to keep jobs for his friends
at TNT. You know, I think, for one, he's got
enough connections he can probably find his friends better jobs.
Speaker 2 (39:40):
And I'm with you, well know they'd have to move, though, Sean.
He wants to keep everybody in Atlanta. Look, I I
know that every single time that Charles has joined us,
he has brought that up every single time. And it's
a big crew that's there, and they've been together for
a long time. As he said, Look, I've seen guys
(40:00):
get married, have kids, the kids are going to college.
So I understand what he's saying. Could he get them
jobs elsewhere, yes, but they would have to uproot and
move someplace, yes see.
Speaker 5 (40:13):
And aside from moving everybody, that's not the way life
nor business works. Like, okay, I'm coming, so does everybody
else here too. That's not really the way place is
higher And you can't because how many people are you
going to bring in? Then are you going to displace
those people who have been at that place? It just
it's not going to happen. Charles wanted to keep everybody
(40:34):
in place in Atlanta. That's why it was important. It's
not the only reason why, but it's one of the
big reasons why that he wanted to stay. He wanted
to That's why he said, Look, if I can't do
it here, I'm going to retire. And people said, well,
you're not going to retire. Well, he doesn't have to
cross that bridge now because he's going to stay there.
(40:54):
I don't know how much longer he does it. I
would say over under would probably be maybe three or
four years. But as he said, if it gets goofy here,
then I'm going to leave, you know, But I don't
know what role you're going to have, which I find fascinating.
Speaker 2 (41:09):
You've got unique talent. Now, how do you use him? Well,
check in on the Eagles coming up.
