New Zealand Rugby League boss Greg Peters is encouraging walking before running when it comes to expansion in the NRL.
Reports have emerged that the league's pitched a proposal to split the competition into two conferences which would see new teams added in Brisbane and New Zealand.
Peters told D'Arcy Waldegrave it's a great move, but does wonder whether the time is right.
"As New Zealanders, we all want to see the Warriors be regular finalists, and cementing that sort of position perhaps is a stepping stone before we look to expand any further."
He says it's great the discussions are being had, but they need to tempered a bit.
"With making sure it's done in a staged and proper manner so it has every chance of success."
The inclusion of the new Brisbane side could come as soon as 2023, with the potential additional New Zealand club to follow in the following years.
Peters says that any new side would need to be based outside of Auckland.
"Wellington would be one opportunity and Christchurch equally so, so when you come down to discussing locations, there's a much wider discussion about the depth of the game in that particular area, and also the commercial opportunities."
