Speaker 1 (00:00):
On the bright side, Texas lost and Creighton starts playing
here in about a week. What more do you need
on a Friday morning. Hi, I am Scott silver Lining
Voorhees here on Nebraska's Morning News with Lucy Chapman, Craig Evans,
and Jim Rose. This is News Radio eleven ten kfab.

(00:24):
Here's the only thing that I will say to tee
up the conversation as I handed off to you, Jim,
we see this.

Speaker 2 (00:30):
A lot in sports. I'm the heavy is that it.

Speaker 1 (00:32):
We see this a lot in sports, and we all
have examples of it, of it happening to our favorite players,
our favorite teams. And sometimes the moment is just too big,
which is a nice way of saying that sometimes people choke.
I'm gonna put a brighter spin on it. I think
I don't know that it was a choke the moment,

(00:54):
the moment was too big. Well, it might have been.
I think you got to give the other team a
little bit of crap. Now, if you're a golfer, you're
a golfer.

Speaker 2 (01:03):
You can.

Speaker 3 (01:03):
It's hard to swing when your hands are wrapped around
your throat. But when you're on a team sport, in
a team sport and you're playing in a team competition,
it's typically not one guy and the team does.

Speaker 2 (01:15):
Not collectively choke.

Speaker 3 (01:16):
Now, the head coach had difficulty counting to five in
the last minute, but that's sort of a snarky crack
of Fred.

Speaker 1 (01:22):
That was a big play. It's hard to win when
you've only got four guys out there. I look at
it differently. I thought that our team was so confident
that we thought we could win them with four on five.
So come on Okdale today, we're bright side today.

Speaker 2 (01:37):
Yeah, look, Iowa.

Speaker 3 (01:40):
Iowa played its game in the last ten minutes, tough,
tough defense, and they hit big threes. The Huskers were
playing fine. They were only down three with the fifty
eight seconds to go. Yeah, Iowa had the ball, but
you know, you've got to feel good about your chances
of getting to stop and getting the ball back and
having a chance to tie it at the end. And

(02:00):
so it's tragic that it ended that way. But you
get to these Sweet sixteen games and if you have
a stretch of poor shooting, it costs you the game. Now,
this happens in February. You bounce back and play another
game in three days. But you can't just go stone
cold like the Huskers did. They stopped driving the ball

(02:21):
to the basket. I don't think it was a poorly
officiated game, but there were very few fouls called. And
that's the case in most NCAA tournament games. There is
a general philosophy that you don't you don't become the story.
The officials don't become the story, so they let them
play a little bit. There's a little more contact. But

(02:41):
what struck me is that the Huskers stopped taking the
ball to the basket against a tough defense. But they're
going to get fouls if they take the ball to
the basket. But in the last ten minutes of the game,
they felt content to just stand around the perimeter and
wait for Price Sandford to close his eyes and heave
the ball toward the basket, and in most cases it
went in. Yeah, usually an effective play. That was just

(03:04):
the game plan. Meanwhile, Iolewayd just kept hammering, hammering, hammering.
They put the ball inside outside, they got some open
three looks and hit them. That's what happened in this game.
A lot of Nebraskans are going to hang on that
last deep throw, the hail Mary pass against the four guys.

Speaker 2 (03:23):
But it was really lost.

Speaker 3 (03:24):
I think in the last ten minutes I'm watching the game, going,
what are you doing. Take the ball to the basket
and if you draw a crowd, then kick the ball
off to the wing and let you know, Kale black
Shoes take a three, Sam take a three, Sandford take
a three. Rink pop out take a three. But to

(03:44):
just stand around on the perimeter and then take a
guarded three or off a high screen see if price
can get open for a three. I don't think it
was the right game plan. I think Fred Hoiberg was
the National Coach of the Year this year, but he
got out coached last night. When you have that happened,
that's on the bench, Okay, that's when you call time.

Speaker 2 (04:03):
I said, here's what we're going to do. Fellas. You
take the ball into that lane.

Speaker 3 (04:07):
Now, if you come out with a broken arm, that's
just the price to pay for playing in the NCAA tournament.
That did not happen, or the kids didn't believe it.
One of the two, and that's unfortunate.

Speaker 1 (04:17):
I do believe that a team can collectively Again, I
don't I don't want I only want to use that
term choke. Just that one time here too didn't put
a better spin on it and say the moment was
too big. But a team can collectively all feel that
same thing and the same way that how do birds
know how to suddenly all bank left at the exact

(04:39):
same time in a migration pattern. You can get into
a hive mindset. Great teams do, and that works out
really well sometimes and then we see things like we
saw last night. I I just unfortunately that moment was
too big for our big red last night. And I yes,
I'll give the Hawkeyes credit. I have friends and family

(04:59):
who I claim as Hawkeye fans, and they all let
me know they were very happy last night for their team. Well,
I don't hate good for them, no, and I don't either,
and but I do hate Texas. And the bright side
is they lost last night. That was great, all right,
we got very good. That's to me. That was the
happy ending last night. Jim Rows will have more in
sports in just a moment. One of the more savage

(05:20):
emails you will ever hear in the history of broadcast media.
Coming up a little bit later this morning. Well, we'll
get to that related to last night's game. Jim Rose
with sports brief Shortly, I'm Scott for he is here
with Craig Evans and Lucy Chapman, welcoming on to Nebraska's
morning news. The President of the Nebraska Farm Bureau, Mark Mikhar,

(05:41):
joins us here on news radio eleven ten KFA B
and Mark, thank you very much for taking the time.
It's something that a lot of people throughout the country
either heard briefly about, and even some people in Omaha
and Lincoln. Oh yeah, the wildfires, well they got them
all out right contained. Doesn't mean what's the latest year
from the sand Hills, you know the latest?

Speaker 4 (06:04):
We certainly had some stuff burning yesterday that started backup
that wasn't burning. Just in large perspective, we're talking one
hundred square miles burns and we're just really kind of.

Speaker 5 (06:18):
Getting into burn season. So we.

Speaker 4 (06:22):
Are really under the gun in Nebraska. Especially love to
those ranchers that are just happen to find a place
for this cattle and really fine, hey for the cattle
right now, it's most important thing.

Speaker 1 (06:33):
The Nebraska Farm Bureau has established a disaster relief fund.
Tell me about what this is going to be able
to do for our our friends. Are necessary friends in
the egg community and how people can give.

Speaker 4 (06:48):
Well, we're really excited to open this fund up. We
started this fund in twenty nineteen when we had all
the flooding. I think we administrated about three million dollars
through there. We do not collect any administration fee from
this and so it's just a great place if somebody
wants to give to some fire relief.

Speaker 5 (07:06):
They know it's a reputable fund.

Speaker 4 (07:07):
There's a lot of scams out there, and you can
go to any.

Speaker 5 (07:11):
FB dot org. It'll be on the.

Speaker 4 (07:13):
First page there and we will make sure those funds
get to individuals that need it. They'll have to put
in an application. Will scream those applications to make sure
again there's no fraud.

Speaker 5 (07:25):
So we'll get that money out to people that need it.

Speaker 1 (07:28):
Yeah, one hundred percent of these donations distributed to support farmers, ranchers,
and rural communities affected by in this case, the Sandhills
wildfire disaster. It's online at n e FB dot org.
That's as in Nebraska Far and Bureau n e FB
dot org. Mark, thank you very much for stepping up.

(07:48):
As we look forward to the future here when it
comes to ad commodities, especially beef prices. What can we
expect for the rest of this year and in the
years ahead based on what's happened thus far in this wildfire.

Speaker 4 (08:03):
You know, Scott, I just do not see any softening
in the beef market.

Speaker 5 (08:07):
It's just the supply.

Speaker 4 (08:10):
Driven market, and we do not have the supply and
we still have demand out there. I'm currently in Washington, DC.
I'm going to be going over to the White House
this afternoon to be a part of a Celebrate America
with President Trump, and if I get the chance to
talk to him, I'm going to talk to him about
these wildfires and just the devastation that that has caused

(08:32):
and is causing, and what we can expect some cederl
government to help help us through this.

Speaker 1 (08:39):
I know that he loves the farmers, he loves the
agg producer, as he mentioned as much yesterday, not talking
specifically about Nebraska, but he said, and I'm loosely quoting
him here, we got to help out our farmers. They
don't complain, they don't ask for anything, and they need
help right now. So I'm sure he would welcome the conversation. Mark,
go get him. Tell the president.

Speaker 2 (08:59):
We said, high all right, we will do that.

Speaker 1 (09:02):
That is the president of the Nebraska Farm Bureau in Washington,
Mark Micharg Here on KFAB. You can go again to
the website n e FB dot org that's as in
Nebraska Farm Bureau n e FB dot org and donate
to the Nebraska Farm Bureau Disaster Relief Fund. Now the

(09:24):
eleven ten KFAB Certified Transmission Sports Brief. Here's Jim Rose.

Speaker 3 (09:28):
Okay, Scott, good morning, everybody. Husker Nation is a little
down this morning, but be comforted to know the coach
is with you.

Speaker 6 (09:34):
We don't get to lay them up anymore together as
a group, and you know they've been all about the
right things. You know, these guys will be a part
of history of Nebraska basketball forever.

Speaker 2 (09:45):
Coach.

Speaker 3 (09:46):
After the seventy seven to seventy one lost to Iowa
and the NCAA Tournament season ends, But what a season.
It was best ever in the modern era.

Speaker 6 (09:54):
You know, when we come back, whenever it is for reunion,
we'll get to hang a banner next year in bann
that's never been hung in PBA, and we'll get invited
back someday hopefully I'm still around. But these guys, you know,
with their kids, will be able to come back and
talk about this season.

Speaker 2 (10:09):
Yeah, too bad.

Speaker 3 (10:09):
Nebraska sprinted out to a ten point lead in this game,
repelled every Hawkeye comeback until the final few minutes. Nebraska
led for thirty two of the forty minutes, but stopped
attacking the basket in the second half, which allowed Iowa
to claw back and take their first lead at two
minutes and ten seconds to go, and then disaster struck
Iowa by three. With a minute to go, Hawk's ready

(10:32):
to inbound the ball, Nebraska only has four guys on
the floor. Iowa throws the ball over the top to
get a dunk and a foul. Lead stretches a six
and that's it. Fred says, I own that one.

Speaker 6 (10:44):
You know, put that one on me. It was a miscommunication,
and you know, I'm the head coach. Put that one
on me. I've never been in a situation like that.
I know they always count to make sure there's not six.
I don't know the rule on that with four, but yeah,
I mean again, it was a miscommunication, and you know,
unfortunately it did happened. But that you know, as far
as the rule, I've never been a part of anything

(11:05):
like that.

Speaker 2 (11:06):
So be sad.

Speaker 3 (11:07):
How the season ended, but smile that had happened, more wins,
more great moments than any season in history, and now
the transactions begin. Sandford and Frager will be million dollar
plus babies if they choose to enter the transfer portal,
and that's going to be expensive. Iowa now plays Illinois
for a trip to the final four for the Aliini

(11:27):
took out the number two seed Houston Cougar's in Houston
after the Husker game sixty five to fifty five, so
there will be at least one Big ten team in
the final four. Arizona beat Arkansas one on nine to
eighty eight, and it was produced seventy nine, Texas seventy seven,
So Purdue is going to play Arizona for a chance
to reach the Final four in San Jose. In that

(11:49):
regional final on Saturday, Arizona one oh four number four
Arkansas the four seed in that region eighty eight in
the game that followed the Purdue Texas game. Fase ball
games yesterday afternoon and last night, American League Baltimore two
to one over the Twins, Angels beat Houston three to nothing,
Cleveland six to four over Seattle. It was the Mets
and Dodgers and Nationals all winning games in the National League.

(12:12):
Interleague scorers Milwaukee fourteen, the White Sox two, Boston three,
Cincinnati nothing, the Cardinals nine to seven over Tampa Bay.
Detroit beat San Diego eight to two, Philadelphia five, Texas three.
Kansas City Royals open up the season tonight. They are
playing their first regular season game, visiting the Atlanta Braves
at Truest Park. It'll be Coleriggins to start for Kansas

(12:34):
City against Atlanta's southpaw Chris Sayle. The Royals surge did
the end of last season, finished third in the ALE Central.

Speaker 2 (12:42):
They expect better this year.

Speaker 3 (12:44):
Stormchasers are on the Diamond to begin their new season.
Omaha visits the Louisville Bats tonight to start up a
three game weekend series in Louisville. Ryan Bergert will be
the starting pitcher for Omaha in their opener tonight. How
about this wild one, I'm more Ron Colli star Alec Bohm,
who is now one of the better third basemen in

(13:04):
the National League, is suing his parents for apparently siphoning
off his money. The suit claims his parents converted a
sizable amount of money for their own personal use while
managing several financial accounts. He signed a one year deal
just over ten million dollars in the off season. Mom
and Dad's lawyers say none of this is true. I

(13:27):
can relate.

Speaker 1 (13:28):
My parents have sued me for not making more money
and helping them out. So I'm right there with you.
A little sad, people, lots sad, all right. I read
your emails. That's a big part of my job, one
of my favorite parts of my job. Scott at kfab
dot com in the Zonker's custom was inbox of all
the emails I have read in my nearly twenty years

(13:49):
on this radio station, this might be just about the
most savage email I've ever seen, based on the content
and the situation. A close proximity to the unfortunate game
last night, and it comes from Chris, who says, when
I saw Matt Rule in Houston, I knew Nebraska would choke.

(14:10):
I'm surprised Fred didn't ask him to stay away. Who
would want a loser like Rule to bring in his
contagious loser energy. The one guy who can't beat Iowa
is at the Iowa game last night. That's from Chris,
and I'll just back off into the shrubbery like Homer Simpson.

(14:31):
After reading that, I.

Speaker 3 (14:34):
Was a lot more alarmed that he was even there
at last report. The last three games of last football
season were pretty bad, and he brought in eighteen new
guys and he's got the spring game tomorrow. I think
we'll win practices this week. I think what's he doing
at the sweet sixteen?

Speaker 2 (14:54):
Now?

Speaker 3 (14:54):
If Nebraska makes the final four, spring practice is over
and great, go for it. It's sort of like when
you know the football coach and the basketball coach followed
their team to the College World Series. Nothing's going on
in the summer but Houston and hanging out with the
fans and doing videos is the last thing Matt Rule
should be doing. Now that's just me, Okay, that's just

(15:14):
somebody who's been buying tickets and making a donation going
to the game for the last twenty five years and
seeing a really mediocre product. Now, this was supposed to
be the year. Year three was supposed to be the
turnaround year. Yeah, there was a turn. There was a
real turn during the football season. And I don't know
about you, Scott, but I think I speak for a
big chuck of Husker Nation, and that is that guy

(15:37):
needs to worry about his team and not be hanging
around with other teams and doing videos in front of
fan fests on the road when he's got one week
left in spring football practice, and between now and the
opener next year, that's twenty one practices with eighteen new
guys and a whole new staff.

Speaker 1 (15:55):
All right, First of all, you said it last report,
Nebraska's last three games last year were not very good.
I checked to see if there was a new report.
There is, and the new report still says not very
good the last three games. So that is the most
updated information on the end of Nebraska's football season. Now,
my opinion is I didn't mind seeing coach rule there

(16:16):
at the game last night.

Speaker 2 (16:17):
You're not this is off.

Speaker 1 (16:18):
This is a big moment. I am a football fan.
It's the spring game. It's a practice. These guys started
practicing before most other teams in the country.

Speaker 3 (16:28):
They have fifteen spring practices and twenty fall practices to
put a virtually new football team on the field in
a very challenging year. And they have new offensive line coaches,
they have new defensive coaches, they have a new quarterback,
and he's not getting paid nine million dollars a year.

(16:48):
To go to the basketball games. Again. If it's the
final four spring practice is over, they shut it down
until the fall, that's different. But this is forty eight
hours before his last practice of the spring. And now,
if we're forty five practices like we used to be
in the seventies, that's one thing. They got fifteen, that's it.
It's fifteen organized practices, that's it.

Speaker 2 (17:10):
Now if we have.

Speaker 3 (17:11):
Nineteen returning starters and their fifth year seniors, different ball
game when you bring in eighteen transfers. How about this?

Speaker 1 (17:19):
I think it shows the coach rule feels good about
where his team is right now.

Speaker 2 (17:22):
This is the second who be out there micromanaging, the.

Speaker 3 (17:25):
Same guy who before the Cincinnati game last year looked
around and said, we have a damn good football team. Yeah,
how that turn out? Just saying that's all. I'm an
accountability guy, that's all.

Speaker 2 (17:38):
Good morning, Scott Lucy and Jim. Mister Rose is correct.

Speaker 6 (17:42):
And I asked this question, how many other head football
coaches at the college level.

Speaker 2 (17:48):
Were at Sweet sixteen games last night and this weekend?

Speaker 1 (17:52):
Thank you very much for that. Didn't I see the
Texas coach out there at their game last night? I
don't don't care about them. No, I certainly don't care
about them. And I was worried that Chris Baker would
be the childish one of the new additions to the
kfab lineup. But after hearing Gene Stothert contribute to the
latest butch Up Academy bit on the Chris Baker Show,

(18:14):
I got to have a talk with both of them.
Say listen, both you guys grow up. Please, you know
I'll have that talk next week. It's Friday. I'm Scott
Voorhees here with Lucy Chapman, Greg Evans, Jim Rose. This
is Nebraska's morning news news radio eleven ten KFAB. Here's
what touched things off this morning. It was an email

(18:36):
from Chris sent via the Zonker's custom woods inbox Scott
atkfab dot com. And Chris said, when I saw Matt
Ruhle in Houston, I knew Nebraska would choke the one
guy who can't beat Iowa. I'm surprised Fred didn't ask
him to stay away. Who would want his contagious loser
energy in that arena. That was essentially the email from Chris.

(19:00):
Now we got everyone battering that back and forth here
and including via the Talkback.

Speaker 7 (19:06):
Mike Scott, I'm gonna make a statement that's probably never
been set on this show. Thank you for being the
voice of reason.

Speaker 2 (19:13):
Haha.

Speaker 7 (19:15):
Tell Jim Schumer to just calm down.

Speaker 2 (19:19):
Rules bad, rules bad.

Speaker 7 (19:21):
That's all I hear from him. He went down and
supported another program inside the athletic department that his program
pays for. Calm down, Go big Red, Go Big Red.

Speaker 2 (19:34):
And you're right.

Speaker 1 (19:35):
I have never been cited for being the voice of
reason on this or any other radio show I've ever done.

Speaker 2 (19:43):
Jim, I'm an accountability guy.

Speaker 3 (19:45):
I Jim, shoot, I just I just think that you know,
the number one priority is the football program, and if
the spring season was over, I'd have no problem with it.

Speaker 2 (19:54):
But it's not.

Speaker 3 (19:55):
And uh, these guys are getting paid a lot of
money to win football games and we've not been doing it.
That's all I'm saying. Great, thanks for supporting the program.
Like Danny Busboom. Okay, she was down there. Fine, Danny
Busboom doesn't have a spring training right now, and her
team was number one in the country for most of
last year. Dan undefeated, Danny Busboom, Kelly, come on, I'm sorry,

(20:15):
Danny Busboom Kelly was there, and I'm good with that.
But I just believe as a season ticket holder and
as a fan, I'd like to see one focus on
the football team during spring practice.

Speaker 1 (20:27):
That's all. He's got a fighter jet. He flies back
a fighter jet. He didn't miss any time. Fine.

Speaker 3 (20:34):
Now Greg emails and says, now in the season, he
went to the Bud Crawford fight in Las Vegas after
a game.

Speaker 2 (20:41):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (20:41):
And I'm all I'm saying is I don't like the
look of that. I think that the perception is not good.

Speaker 6 (20:48):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (20:48):
When you've got a massive buyout like he does, it
tends to make people wonder whether he really is accountable
for the program.

Speaker 1 (20:55):
Now, what what are you doing this weekend? I'm going
to watch the spring game on the Big ten network.
I want you there at that computer typing. Oh, I'll
be doing that too, hype type type type doing that.

Speaker 3 (21:05):
Too, coming up with the kind of killer content that
keeps this radio show number one.

Speaker 1 (21:10):
Well, it's not coming from me. I'm just reading emails.
Greg says, Now, think about this. So Nebraska loses the
basketball game and all those Husker fans come back to
watch the spring game instead of being in Houston, to
follow the basketball team, so they wanted the basketball team
to lose so it wouldn't be an empty Memorial stadium
for the spring game tomorrow. That's from Greg says that

(21:34):
a conspiracy. Is that far fetched? Jim, do you want
to respond to Greg's query that Nebraska lost the basketball
game on purpose so all those fans could come back
and go to the spring game of the more nonsense?
That's pure nonsense regarding the game yesterday. Sad but true.

(21:54):
Message here also via the talkback, Mike, Hey, I.

Speaker 8 (21:57):
Don't think you guys have talked about Sam Hoibers performing yet.
You know, he's top in the nation for turnover to
assist ratio, and he had a number of turnovers last night,
and I don't think he scored any points. And I
think if he would have been on, could have been
a little bit different game. Maybe we could have stretched
our lead even a little bit more. But I just
think he was a little off last night too.

Speaker 2 (22:18):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (22:18):
Sean Callahan addressed this, Iowa down that stretch had a
number of guys step up and make big shots. Nebraska
did not. Hoiberg was one of them. A lot of
his impact is not scoring the ball, but it's also
not turning the ball over. And there was some unfortunate
plays by our guy, Sam Hoiberg last night, but we

(22:39):
needed someone to step up and make a big shot
late in that game, and no one did. I appreciate
that message via the talkback Mike this email.

Speaker 2 (22:52):
Yeah, well, Sam Heiberg did score last night. Yeah he did.
He had a had six points.

Speaker 3 (22:59):
He did not yet the big rebounding numbers that he
has gotten in previous games. And yes, the assist to
turnover ratio was not what it typically is for Sam.
He had six assists and five turnovers. The five turnovers
very very rare, the ten turnovers pretty rare for Nebraska.
But they were playing against one of the better defensive
teams in the Big Ten and the Big the gaudy

(23:22):
defensive numbers for Nebraska basketball this year, meaning the other
team's defense was largely the result of teams that don't
play a lot of good defense, but when they went
up against good defensive teams, it was a different ballgame. Conversely,
the Huskers played consistently very good defense all year, and
I thought they played very good defense yesterday in the
first half, even though Iowa was shooting the lights out.

(23:45):
I don't know if you heard on the broadcast, but
Kevin Harlan, who was doing the play by play, said
this was the best shooting half in the history of
the NCAA tournament.

Speaker 1 (23:54):
It was the best shooting half of the nc between
two teams this year.

Speaker 2 (23:59):
I don't know. In the hiss, I think he said
history of the tournament. All right, we'll look it up.

Speaker 3 (24:02):
I mean, you're talking about two teams that were hitting
what fifty five and fifty eight percent in the first
half and shooting a lot of three we were headed. Yeah,
they were a combined fourteen of twenty five sports brief
coming up here after traffic, weather and news. Don't forget
Creighton plays Thursday. Right, come on, come on, Jay Skurz,
where are you at?

Speaker 1 (24:20):
Who's the coach? This is news Radio eleven ten. Kfab's
got a kfab dot com. The hits just keep on coming.
Here in the Zonker's Custom Woods inbox, this email from
Denise says, does Iowa get an actual deed since they
now officially own Nebraska? That's from don't laugh at that, Jim.

(24:42):
Come on, this is the most brutal inbox let's take
volleyball ever seen Iowa has never ever in history since
the first man discovered fire, beatn Nebraska in volleyball, they
have not one unwin over Nebraska in the history of

(25:02):
the sport. Everyone noting that one. So you can say
that Jim jinxed us this fall. Then they take a
lot more than me jinxing them.

Speaker 2 (25:09):
Then there's this email.

Speaker 1 (25:10):
I love the idea that, don't you love the people said, Jim,
you jinxed us? Like, yes, I have all of this
infinite power. I have so much influence and power, and
this is what I used it for. Yeah, here's this email.
Imagine driving for fourteen hours, spending six hundred dollars on
hotel rooms, four hundred dollars on a nosebleed to see
your team is down by three with a minute left,

(25:33):
just to see your team put four players on the court.
That's another email sent to scottikfab dot com. It is
brutal this morning. You can send your messages as well.
Chris emails and says, I know a lot of people
are disappointed that the Huskers lost the basketball game, but

(25:53):
what I want to talk about is the complete horse
manure at the NC two A showed by honoring the
Texas A and M women's volleyball team while Nebraska was
playing during halftime of the Nebraska game. Come on, that's
low ran even for the NC double A. I didn't

(26:14):
I this is on TV. I don't know in the
arena I during halftime of the Nebraska game, I flipped
over and watched texts.

Speaker 2 (26:20):
I did too.

Speaker 3 (26:20):
I didn't pay any attention to the halftime show, so
obviously it was on the floor there in Houston.

Speaker 2 (26:26):
Yeah, that's classless, brutal.

Speaker 3 (26:29):
Dude, especially since pretty much all of our players that
day and I'm not into excuses, but pretty much all
of our players that day were on IV fluids since
the flu bugs raged through the locker room. If our
folks aren't sick, we drill those guys like rended livestock.

Speaker 2 (26:45):
But anyway, it didn't happen. They won.

Speaker 1 (26:47):
Well, the emails, that's classless. The email earlier this morning
from Chris blaming Matt Rule's presence of the game for
Nebraska losing to Iowa since Matt Rule can never beat
Iowa is piling on, says. I totally agree with that email.
I predict a five and seven upcoming football season and

(27:07):
Matt Rule gets run out of town. There were a
couple of other phrases in that email, but I took
them out because I don't want an FCC violation. As
far as Iowa, Mark says, Nebraska wrestling finished ahead of
Iowa wrestling, you go at the NCAA Championship. Go Husker wrestling. Yeah,
thank you for that, And Ryan says, sounds like the

(27:29):
football coach being at the basketball tournament could be a
curse as both Texas and Nebraska loss.

Speaker 2 (27:36):
Is that a coincidence? Yes, it is a coincidence.

Speaker 1 (27:41):
I I'm telling you that after Nebraska loss last night,
the fact that I was able to flip over and
watch Texas lose was a tremendous silver lining to an
otherwise bad night. And Creighton plays next week in the
Crown Tournament, where my jaysker's at. Your Jayskers are thinking
sprint football, and JD email says, you know, anytime he's

(28:05):
a referee, our friend j D says, anytime a team
is at a disadvantage, such as in that situation when
Nebraska only had four players in the court last night,
I do everything possible to let the disadvantaged team get
the situation erectified before I permit the ball to be
put in play. If the other coach complains, I tell
him I do the same thing for him. That's from JD.

(28:27):
JD coaches little league basketball.

Speaker 2 (28:31):
So do you have an nil deal for his guys?
This was the Sweet sixteen.

Speaker 1 (28:40):
Sorry, Like I said, Creighton plays Thursday and Texas loss.
Hey we got spring football tomorrow. Come on, look it's Friday.
Here we go there.

Speaker 3 (28:47):
So far mortal Man has not yet invented an instrument
to measure my disinterest in the Crown Invitational Tournament.

Speaker 1 (28:55):
We won that thing last year. I get that very happy.
This is this is not real.

Speaker 3 (29:00):
This is it's it's a chance for players to make
a bunch of nil money.

Speaker 2 (29:04):
That's what it's about. Fine, I mean, I think.

Speaker 3 (29:07):
It's great for the kids because the kids keep playing,
especially the seniors who may not be able to play
any organized basketball anymore. But as a as a fundamental
sports news item, it doesn't qualify.

Speaker 2 (29:20):
Next, you're going to say you don't like the Pro
Bowl Skills challenge. I don't. This is a Lord of
Pro Bowl Skills Challenge either.

Speaker 3 (29:26):
And now it's going to be about to me the
college baseball season because it's heating up in the month
of April. We have the Masters, we have the Final
Four there, we have some real sports events that are
going to get my attention. The Crown Invitation will not.

Speaker 2 (29:40):
Be one of them. Wait wait wait wait wait wait wait.

Speaker 3 (29:41):
Plus, the Transit Portal is going to open here, and
that's high stress. For if I were a creaton fan,
I'd be a whole lot more interested in what's going
to happen in the Transfer Portal and the Crown Invitational.

Speaker 1 (29:52):
Wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait no,
not next week? We got two weeks to the Master.
I was like, wait, they're they're playing in Houston. The
tour is right now.

Speaker 2 (30:03):
Final four week. Yeah, so what's gonna happen? Is you
got weeks the Masters? All right? The Masters? Well good,
I see.

Speaker 3 (30:09):
Plus Easter Sunday, next week's Holy Week. Yeah that's important
to some of us here. Begin to pay attention to that. Yeah, sorry,
that's important too. About how about take a week and
worry about the pretty important and born again?

Speaker 2 (30:21):
How about that?

Speaker 1 (30:22):
I just I need all of this and it's just nothing,
but I have to do everything around here projected angry
people here in the inbox and usually in the studio.
But Jim, you've actually infused some positivity into the discussion
this morning.

Speaker 2 (30:35):
Shocking. I appreciate that.

Speaker 1 (30:37):
Here's an email, Scott, Is there anything else we can
talk about today other than the basketball game? Signed Lucy Chapman. Uh,
the email inbox is strong today. The Zonker's custom was
inbox Scott at kfab dot com. The answer is let
me check my note. No, maybe, yeah, probably, but not yet.

(31:03):
Rich emails and says, now, the subject line, by the way,
is Jim Schumer. This was a nickname given to Jim
Rose by a talkbacker in the talkback mic earlier this morning.
Rich says, now, mister Practice is crying that the Crown
Invitational is meaningless, But yet does it not give the

(31:24):
Jays some additional practice time? Does it not give our
new coach extra minutes to spend with the folks who
need to develop and grow double standard much? Can you
please check with Chris Baker and Jean Stouth and see
what tuition is to the butch Up Academy. Jim needs
remedial training. I'm telling you what this inbox is. It's
scary today. Please keep charge admission like a haunted house

(31:47):
operator just to read these emails today.

Speaker 2 (31:50):
That's all right, these people are fired up.

Speaker 1 (31:51):
You can always send a message in here to the
Zonker's custom Woods inbox via the talkback Mike, Jim.

Speaker 9 (31:58):
And Scott.

Speaker 10 (31:58):
I didn't really have a problem with Rule being down
there at the game. I thought it was a little weird.
He's wearing all black while we're playing Iowa. In the
national audience that didn't know any better, probably thought they
were showing an Iowa fan there.

Speaker 1 (32:12):
Well, black is part of it's black shirts. As part
of our color scheme. You can go black for Nebraska.

Speaker 2 (32:18):
He embraces black more than red and white.

Speaker 1 (32:21):
That does That's fine, But we got all the responses
coming in this morning via the email or the talkback Mike.
Here's another one.

Speaker 11 (32:30):
Good morning, Jim. I would just so love for you
to once in a while on your own bring up
Husker softball. If I call in, you always kind of
throw it in, but that'd be nice. We open with
UCLA tonight, we play tonight, tomorrow and Sunday should be
some very good softball, so there's more than just baseball

(32:50):
to look forward to. Have a great weekend.

Speaker 6 (32:53):
Bye.

Speaker 2 (32:54):
I think the.

Speaker 3 (32:54):
Huskers won like thirteen in a row. Yeah, this is
a big series against UCLA. They're good in softball.

Speaker 5 (32:59):
There you go.

Speaker 3 (32:59):
That'll tight her over for We'll wrap up the weekend
of softball on Monday.

Speaker 1 (33:04):
And the the iowa'ser now coming to after that night
of celebration, This email from Doug to Scott at kfab
dot com says, what's with all the sad faces? Iowa
was now playing in the Elite eight. Iowa State is
playing tonight for its chance to advance, and I haven't
heard anything from you guys on how great it is

(33:25):
for being in Iowa. Stop hating on Iowa. Show us
the love we have earned. Please, my bracket is still alive.
Iowa versus Iowa State for the national championship. How awesome
would that be? It's most definitely a possibility at this point.
It's definitely a possibility. It's very definitely a possibility. And
that's all it is. Thank you Doug for that email.

Speaker 3 (33:48):
I was gonna have to get past Iowa State. It's
gonna have to get back Tennessee and Michigan.

Speaker 1 (33:51):
Your bracket is not alive in terms of being a
perfect bracket. As Jim Rose noted yesterday, the only perfect
bracket out there and this is I think it's on
the women's side.

Speaker 3 (34:03):
And the men's side. No, it's both. It's both men's
and women's bracket. So I read this says women's bracket.
And maybe this is after last night's game. No, this
was before sixteen, but I think this.

Speaker 2 (34:19):
Is an update.

Speaker 5 (34:20):
Now.

Speaker 1 (34:21):
This is the only perfect bracket left right now, more
than forty million entries belongs to an eighth grader from
Pittsburgh named Otto Shellehammer. He's fourteen years old, geek perfect
so far, women's bracket. He admits to knowing nothing about hoops.
He says, it's not about March madness. It's one hundred

(34:42):
percent luck. I know basically nothing about basketball. I play
with my friends. I don't even watch the games. But
he's correctly picked all the the women's games thus far.
He's fifteen games away from a perfect bracket. He's got
Texas winning, so Auto, I hope you lose just because
we can't root for Texas. Look, I have feigned discussed

(35:09):
for Iowa. But you know, as I said earlier, I've
got friends and family who I claim who are big
Hawkeye fans, and I'm very happy for them today. But
it's a rivalry for a reason. So Iowa, it's a
playful rivalry. But Texas, I hope they lose everything in
every single sport all the time. They are they're cheaters,
and they ruined the Big Eight and the Big Twelve,

(35:30):
and then they cheated in that championship game. And I
won't be over at the State of Texas. I like,
and the other team's down there are fine, But the Longhorns,
I hope you all get mauled by your bevo. I'm
Scott Boorhies welcoming on here from Fox News Radio. Jeff
Monasso back to Nebraska's morning news to talk about anything
other than last night's Husker basketball game. This one, though,

(35:51):
I'm guessing we're talking about popularity polls for the president,
and I can't imagine that they're higher in the last
few weeks.

Speaker 2 (35:59):
Jet they get me with you to.

Speaker 9 (36:02):
The latest Fox poll shows nearly a two thirds of
voters are dissatisfied with how things are going in the US.
President Trump's overall job rating stands it about forty one
percent approve fifty nine disapproved. The President's negative marks across issues,
the worst numbers are inflation, with a new low of
twenty eight percent approving. That's down seven points since January

(36:25):
and twelve points since March of twenty twenty five, and
he is thirty four percent approval for the economy is
another new low. It's down six points since January and
nine points from from a year ago. The president's overall
job rating it stands at about I think I already
mentioned that forty one percent approved fifty nine percent disapprove.

(36:47):
Americans in the latest Reuters IPSIS poll and YouTube Economist
polls as of late March, expressing essentially the same thing,
dissatisfaction over the economy, the president, job, the president, the
President Trump's job performance in the primary driver of this sentiments,
it's what you would think it would be. It's the

(37:08):
cost of living every time you go in the grocery store.
It's gas prices, grocery prices that shot through the roof
under President Biden that President Trump promised to get under control.
Americans continue feeling the pain of the pump three ninety
six per gallon as of this morning, according to Triple A.
It's still not the over five dollars per gallon reached

(37:28):
under President Biden in twenty twenty two. But it's thirty
five percent higher than it was a month ago, and
people feel that and every little bit hurts or helps,
and so, you know, these people are also leery about
fears amid fears over potential long term military action in Iran.

(37:49):
And while President Trump's core MAGA base remains loyal with
approximately eighty to eighty nine percent approval, dissatisfaction has grown
among independent and even some Republicans, particularly regarding affordability and
national debt. All that said, the President, responding on our
area yesterday about polls, he says, polls are just like

(38:12):
fake journalists who writes bad stories. Fake polls are designed
to do damage as well. Yeah, but of course if
this was a great poll, he would love the poll,
you know, and you know not all these polls are
bad polls. But it's his response, and it's our responsibility
to tell you what he said right now.

Speaker 1 (38:33):
Yeah, he doesn't he doesn't care. But this was before yesterday.
They apparently have ended the government shutdown to at least
pay TSA workers. We haven't had any more incidents where
we saw all the fighting and the protests and the
violence in Minnesota with the ice and so forth. I
mean all that's kind of calmed down here. So we'll

(38:56):
see if perhaps that next rating, if we can get
the stock market back up and gas prices back down,
as the President says, what happen as this situation in
Iran is wrapped up quickly, then maybe things will turn around.
Even if they don't. I think he's still the president,
even if the polls dip a little bit.

Speaker 9 (39:13):
Right, You are correct, yes, right, And Jerome Powell's gone
at the Fed, we think in May. And so what
happens to mortgage mortgage rates, interest rates, And there's a
lot that's going to be happening between now and and
uh and the mid term elections and so and as
you know, people seem to have a shorter memories to

(39:33):
politics and and uh and and so yeah, we'll see
if gas prices can come down, grocery prices, interest rates. Uh,
there's war thing, and you know that I would I
would see that. I would tend to think that his
numbers are going to track up at least for his base,
not not not budget among Democrats.

Speaker 1 (39:56):
So no, no, Well, we'll talk with you about all
of it, and always a lot more. Jeff, thank you
very much for the reporting this morning. Have a great weekend.
This email from Chris. Look at the bride side. We
went to a local sports bar last night. I've never
seen so many people jammed into a place.

Speaker 2 (40:12):
Like it did last night.

Speaker 1 (40:13):
How great for businesses like these establishments. It was unreal. Yeah,
I didn't go out last night. I stayed in. I
was on the chair. Jim, you were out hanging out
with friends. And my favorite thing is is that the
place where you were the person who invited you was
also a friend of mine. And she told me that

(40:35):
you were coming over to her house to watch the game.

Speaker 2 (40:38):
And he said, can I get his autograph?

Speaker 6 (40:39):
No?

Speaker 1 (40:40):
And then she didn't invite me, just made a point,
just made a point of telling me Jim's coming over
to watch the game. And I said, oh great, I
hope you guys have fun.

Speaker 3 (40:53):
Well, these are huge Iowa people, and I went down
into their evil lair, which was just adorned with Hawkeye stuff.
So I said, you know what, I'm going to go
into the belly of the beast and we're going to
kick their mother love and you know what's this in
front of all of this Iowa stuff.

Speaker 1 (41:12):
Well, it was fine for thirty two minutes. It was
real fine, it was great for about thirty two minutes.
It's great for thirty eight minutes. Rolling still thought we
would Vandy the end of that game last night. But
that last play, dude, well, I was really that four
guys on the court play.

Speaker 2 (41:28):
That was rough though. That's something you just can't do.

Speaker 5 (41:31):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (41:32):
This was, though, to me, a really enjoyable year.

Speaker 3 (41:35):
The nineteen ninety ninety one season was a very enjoyable
season for Huscar basketball fans. Yeah, because they were so
good and they won all those big games, and you
started dreaming big, and Danny was fired up, and they
had kids that just really really played well. And we
haven't had a season like that since. Where you ever

(41:56):
teams in the nineties, but not every year. Every week
they were you got a little more excited and a
little more excited and you started dreaming big. Okay, not
since the ninety ninety one season have we had that.
We've had good teams, we've had good players, and we've
had some big wins since then. But this was a
season that really started to grow on you. And it

(42:18):
started with that win at Illinois when JaMarcus hit that
big three to win it. And now you think they
just won at a place that houses a Final four
level team, anything is possible. So it was a fun year,
and I hope Husker basketball fans appreciate it and just
sort of sit back and relax and say, you know what,
I'm glad, I'm a Husker, I'm glad, I'm a fan.

(42:40):
I'm glad this is our coach. We had some really
cool guys on this team. We had some guys that,
for my ten year old son, were outstanding role models,
and I really I feel like that happened this year,
which is which to me is unless you win the
national title, that's enough.

Speaker 1 (42:58):
I am all about the bride side today. It was
a fantastic dream season for Nebraska basketball. Creighton plays next week.
I'm still in on the Crown Tournament. I'm focusing on
I am still in on the Crown Tournament. We got
Eastern next week, we got the Masters here in a
couple of weeks. And Texas lost last night, and it's Friday.

Speaker 9 (43:16):
Doom.

Speaker 2 (43:20):
Doomas and with a.

Speaker 1 (43:23):
Creig Wagner from Nebraska game in Parks, our favorite country boy,
and uh, let's see here. Uh there's no basketball to
talk about. High fire danger still obviously a concern we've
got a fairly breezy and dry weekend.

Speaker 2 (43:40):
Ouch.

Speaker 1 (43:40):
We don't have a chance to rain around here until
maybe Monday night into Tuesday.

Speaker 2 (43:44):
That'd be good.

Speaker 1 (43:45):
But this weekend, obviously, you gotta be careful.

Speaker 2 (43:47):
You gotta be careful.

Speaker 12 (43:48):
You know, sounds like a repeating old record, but you know,
no driving or parking in the tall grass, no smoking obviously,
and no campfires. Burn band is in place now, got
red flag warnings people here in that on Craig Evans
with KFAB. So you got to be extra careful. You

(44:09):
might say, well, Greg, we don't have a ton of
people out. Oh, yes we do when it's eighty degrees
on Sunday. Yes, and we've got the archery turkey season open.

Speaker 2 (44:17):
We'll probably talk about that. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (44:18):
Yeah, But I mean there are some things people don't
think about. They're like, all right, I want that fire
and high wind, dry conditions, but you're parking in the
tall grass using chainsaws, even having chains dragon.

Speaker 2 (44:31):
Using chain saws. No cutting wood? Yeah, sorry guys and gals.

Speaker 1 (44:35):
No, yeah, this is not the weekend. What about turkey hunting? Well,
archery turkey season it's open, pretty good weather.

Speaker 12 (44:44):
It looks like Sunday is going to be real nice day.
The wind kind of plays havoc with us a little bit.
But turkey numbers bumped up in places a little bit.

Speaker 9 (44:53):
You know.

Speaker 12 (44:53):
Of course, everybody sees the town turkeys and goes, oh,
there's lots of turkeys. Well, countryside's a little different, but
things looking pretty.

Speaker 1 (45:00):
The turkeys have learned to carry out dumb hang out
around Boystown around all they've got the brain the size
of a pea Memorial Park. There's a lot of people
hanging around Memorial Park with the brain the size of
the peak. They're protesting with no kings day on Sunday. Sorry,
that was my comment, not yours. What about fish fishing
this weekend? Greg, Well, here we go the fish.

Speaker 12 (45:20):
They're looking at pre spawn walleye right now as they
move toward the reservoir dams. The walleye spawned the first
week of April. We've got the male walleye up there
off those wind swept points right now. Good trying to
good time to try to catch them on trank baits.
As we talk the lingo swim baits. They're fish imitators

(45:41):
and also jigs. Jigs, not the jig that you know
Scott the jigs though, no, And I know jigs all right.
What about on the outdoor bulletin board, Greg, still time
to see all the sand hill cranes along the Platte
River between Grand Island and Carneye. Reserve your state park
prime spot for through the summer. We take reservations up

(46:02):
to six months in advance, one hundred and eighty days.
It's the time to do that, all right, Greg Wagner
from Nebraska Game in Parks. Thank you, Thank as always
appreciate the time
