Speaker 1 (00:00):
Let's do it. We are home. Graham in the Morning
starts now on 96.9 The Cat. What's going on, Cat Country?
All right, sound off. Today, we continue to celebrate the
life of Dolly Parton, an icon. I mean, there's just
nothing that can be said or encapsulated that she was
one of the greatest in country music. Well, she was
(00:21):
one of the greatest businesswomen. She was an innovative songwriter.
She had impeccable comedic timing. If you ever had a
chance to see one of her interviews, you understand what
we're talking about. But today, we want to celebrate the
life of Dolly. What is your favorite or what do
you love about Dolly Parton? Open up the iHeartRadio app.
Tap that red microphone icon in the upper right-hand corner.
(00:42):
Give us your name, where you're listening from, and what
you love most about Dolly Parton. It's 96.9 The Cat.
Phone lines are open. I am taking calls, so if
you want to give us a call right now as well, 1-800-570-9690.
It's Graham in the Morning.
Speaker 2 (00:58):
It's time to sound off Cat Country with Graham in
the Mornings.
Speaker 1 (01:01):
96.9 The Cat. We will continue to celebrate the life
of one of the most iconic figures in all of music,
not just country music, but all of music, Dolly Parton
this week.
Speaker 2 (01:12):
We really should take a couple of days because Dolly
truly was special.
Speaker 1 (01:15):
She was awesome. Legend. What was, and this is like
asking you what your favorite child is, but what was
one of your favorite things about Dolly Parton? Honestly, her
love for the mountains.
Speaker 2 (01:24):
I've always loved Pigeon Forge, Sevierville, Gatlinburg.
Speaker 1 (01:28):
That area just was her. She was all over the place.
Speaker 2 (01:31):
I'm not even just talking about Dollywood, but she just
loved that area so much.
Speaker 1 (01:35):
And you could just feel her presence there. Yeah. Sound off.
What is your favorite thing about Dolly Parton? Or why
do you love Dolly Parton? 1-800-570-9690. It's Graham in the Morning.
Time for Did You Know? With Graham in the Mornings
on 96.9 The Cat. Dolly Parton tells Elvis Presley to
kick rocks now think about this When this story occurred,
(01:57):
Dolly Parton was just 28 years old. Basically, Elvis Presley
wanted to record a record she wrote, I Will Always
Love You, famously covered by Whitney Houston. And originally, the
deal was set. Dolly was all in. But the night before,
Elvis was supposed to go in studio, sign all the paperwork,
cut the record. His team or his manager at the time,
Colonel Parker, calls Dolly Parton and says, hey, Elvis wants
(02:20):
50% before he cuts anything. And in layman's terms, basically saying,
I want 50% of the ownership of this song. For
the rest of time, I'm going to own 50% of
this song no matter what happens for its future existence
forever and ever. Well, that ain't work for Dolly. Imagine
being a young woman at the age of 28 in
the music business in the early 70s, and you're telling
(02:40):
Elvis Presley, nah, but that's exactly what Dolly Parton did.
She trusted her gut. She bet on herself, and she
kept 100% of the publishing. Now, fast forward years later,
Whitney Houston records that song. It becomes a worldwide phenomenon.
And because Dolly held on to that publishing, that one
decision earned her tens of millions of dollars. That's pretty
(03:02):
incredible for anyone, but the foresight at 28 years old
to tell the largest star on the planet... That's not
a good business deal for me. Keep it moving. Incredible.
One of my favorite Dolly stories. And we are taking
your Dolly stories. We are celebrating her life all week long.
Give us a call.
Speaker 3 (03:18):
1-800-570-9690.
Speaker 1 (03:18):
Sound off. What do you love most about Dolly Parton?
What's the Carolinas talking about today? It's your top three
on Graham in the Mornings. On 96.9 The Cat. Attention
Walmart shoppers, you may notice some changes at self-checkout this weekend.
The retailer is adjusting checkout procedures in some of its
(03:41):
stores as it continues to look for ways to improve
your shopping experience. So if you've got a Walmart run
on the schedule this weekend, just be aware it might
take a little bit more time to check out at
the register. I say that selfishly because I make a
Walmart run every Saturday. True story. Sheetz, the popular gas
station and convenience store chain that's become a favorite road
trip stop across the Carolinas, is continuing its expansion around
(04:04):
the region with another location in Lake Norman. And what
that means for drivers or commuters, more competition usually means
more convenience for us, more additional jobs, and more continued
growth in one of the fastest growing parts of our community.
And finally, Charlotte area schools earning national recognition, always a
good thing. Schools like Marvin Ridge, Weddington, once again receiving
high marks in the national rankings. And that's more than
(04:24):
just bragging rights. So strong schools help attract families, help
attract businesses, investments to the region, which is one reason
Charlotte continues to be such a desirable place to call home.
And that's your top three on 96.9 The Cat. Coming up, 7.30
Cat Fight. We are giving away George Burge tickets. Keep
us locked. It's Graham in the mornings.
Speaker 2 (04:43):
Ah!
Speaker 1 (04:46):
With Graham in the Mornings. Nick out of Hickory. Welcome
to Graham in the Mornings. Producer Hunter, you're going to
be hanging out in Hickory on Saturday. That's right. I'll
be down at the Boot Barn. It's going to be
a good time. And you're giving away Casey Musgraves' ticket,
aren't you? That's right. I think we might have some
free boots, too. You could win. All right. We'll give
you more details about that later. We also got our
homeboy Grayson on the line. Grayson, where are you calling from, bud?
(05:07):
He's calling from Gastonia. All right. I've been told this
is a tag team effort, which I think will be
very good for Throwback Thursday. Grayson and his dad. Is
that right, Grayson? That is correct. Let's go. All right,
we got George Burge passes on the line. It is
my favorite day, Throwback Thursday. I always love your throwback questions.
The first one right out the gate strong. Before cell phones,
(05:28):
you needed what coin to call home for a payphone?
Speaker 4 (05:31):
Nick.
Speaker 1 (05:32):
Nick.
Speaker 4 (05:33):
Quarter.
Speaker 1 (05:34):
Here's a quarter. Call someone who cares. That's what I
was going to say.
Speaker 4 (05:37):
I love that.
Speaker 1 (05:38):
As Travis Trent would say. Back in the 90s, this
was the universal sign that it was time to stop
playing outside.
Speaker 4 (05:45):
Nick.
Speaker 1 (05:47):
Nick.
Speaker 3 (05:47):
Streetlights.
Speaker 1 (05:49):
The streetlights came on. You better get your tail home.
That's right. All right, Nick, you're going to George Burge. Grayson,
we're going to get Grayson back. Can we get Grayson
in on the riddle, maybe? Yeah, we might have to
call Grayson back here in a little while. Grayson, where
are you headed? Are you headed to school right now?
He is, but he has a doctor's appointment.
Speaker 3 (06:05):
In fact, he's getting out of the car now, and
then he's getting picked up in about an hour.
Speaker 1 (06:09):
Oh, what school are you guys going to?
Speaker 3 (06:11):
He's at New Hope Elementary.
Speaker 1 (06:12):
Let's go. Shout out to New Hope Elementary. That's right.
Shout out, Grayson. Thanks for playing this morning. Yeah, man. Again,
probably not the greatest day, Grayson. I think most of
these things occurred before Grayson was alive.
Speaker 2 (06:22):
Probably so. We'll make it up to Grayson.
Speaker 1 (06:24):
All right, sound off. We are continuing to celebrate the
life of Dolly Parton. What do you love most about Dolly?
Phone lines continue to be open. All show long. 1-800-570-5705. 9690.
It's Graham in the mornings, 96 minutes, nonstop cat country.
We all need a Dolly Parton in our lives.
Speaker 2 (06:42):
Being a strong female icon, we need more Dolly Partons.
Speaker 1 (06:46):
Could not agree more. I'm going to piggyback that with
a story that you might not know.
Speaker 4 (06:51):
Okay.
Speaker 1 (06:51):
So you're familiar with the record, I Will Always Love You.
Speaker 4 (06:54):
Yes.
Speaker 1 (06:54):
Dolly Parton wrote that. Whitney Houston famously covered it. It became,
at one point in time, I think still to this day,
the highest selling solo female song of any genre. Highest
selling ever. Yeah. At 28 years old, Elvis reached out
and wanted to cut. I will always love you. OK, yeah.
Dolly Parton in premise said, yeah, I would love that.
One of the biggest stars on the planet. Well, the
(07:16):
night before he was supposed to cut it, he reached
out with a stipulation that I want half a publishing. Really?
At 28 years old, Dolly Parton said, no, I wrote that.
I'm keeping all the publishing. That's going to go to
my family moving forward. This record is going to stand
the test of time.
Speaker 4 (07:30):
Really?
Speaker 1 (07:31):
That's awesome. Turn down Elvis at 28. At 28? Later,
that song gets cut. She keeps all the publishing, and
it made something like $ 10 to $ 20 million a year
for her. Good for her. How about that? Yeah. Talk
about strong female. And that was like in 1974. To Elvis.
That's crazy.
Speaker 4 (07:47):
Wild.
Speaker 1 (07:48):
And she was only 28 years old. You got to
love Dolly. No one like her. No one like her.
Sound off. What's your favorite thing about Dolly Parton? 1-800-570-9690. 96.9,
the cat, it's Graham in the mornings. We continue to
celebrate the life of an icon, Dolly Parton. Sound off.
What do you love most about Dolly Parton? You can
(08:08):
call us. Phone lines are always open to 1-800-570-9690 or
leave us a talk back. That's right. Anytime you want.
Open up the iHeartRadio app. It is that red microphone icon,
upper right-hand corner. It works just like a voice note.
Tap it. Leave us your favorite memory or what you
love most about Dolly Parton. I actually met Dolly Parton
(08:29):
at her theme park. She was so down to earth
and so people friendly. 96 minutes, nonstop cat country. Time
for Producer Hunter's Riddle Challenge. Today's daily riddle. I have
six letters, but subtract the last one and I will
have 12. I have six letters, but subtract the last
(08:50):
letter and I will have 12. Your answer coming up
in three songs. I know, it's a tough one today.
It's producer Hunter's Riddle Challenge. Why you wait? Lil' Stella Lefty,
Blake Shelton, and Ain't No Love in Oklahoma, our homeboy
Luke Combs on Graham in the Mornings. On Graham in
the Mornings, we really make you think.
Speaker 3 (09:11):
It's Producer Hunter's Riddle Challenge on 96.9 The Cat.
Speaker 1 (09:16):
I have six letters, but subtract the last one and
I will have 12. What am I, Producer Hunter?
Speaker 2 (09:23):
Okay, it is back to school season, so this reminds
me of being in school, learning letters, subtracting, adding.
Speaker 1 (09:28):
I do have, because I felt like it was challenging,
a good clue for you. I'd love to hear it.
What's another word for 12? A dozen. Mm-hmm. There you go.
That's as close as I'm going to be able to
get you to a clue to solve your daily riddle challenge. Okay,
so you start with six. I have six letters. Subtract
the last letter, and I have 12. And you already
(09:49):
said another word for 12 is dozen. Okay. First thing
I thought of— How many letters in the word dozen? Okay,
hold on. I'm a terrible speller. Okay.
Speaker 2 (09:58):
Also a terrible writer. First thing I think of is— Yeah,
I know, right? The first thing I thought of was
a baker's dozen. Because it's 13, you take one away.
But it doesn't have six letters.
Speaker 1 (10:06):
Correct. How many letters in the word dozen? Six, right? D-O-Z-E-N. Five. Oh,
that's right. Sorry. I tried to spell it out. So
how would you make that a six-letter word? Put an
S at the end? Mm-hmm. So dozens. Yep. Take one
letter off. Now you got 12. There you go. Yeah,
that's right. Producer Hunter's Riddle Challenge. We kind of walked
(10:28):
you through that one. You walked me through that one,
but we did it together. Yeah, we did it together.
It's Thursday. Producer Hunter's Riddle Challenge. It's 96.9 The Cat.
Time for some good news with Graham in the Mornings.
I need.
Speaker 3 (10:42):
Some good news.
Speaker 1 (10:43):
On 96.9 The Cat. Today's good news is brought to
you by my boy, Producer Hunter. So he's going to
be out and about in the streets this weekend at
the grand opening of Boot Barn in Hickory on Saturday.
So you can catch him from 1 to 3. And
the good news is he's going to be giving away
Casey Musgraves tickets. So the address at the grand opening
of the Boot Barn in Hickory to hang out with,
(11:06):
maybe ask for his autograph. I try to get him
to sign stuff every day. He always tells me no,
but he loves cat country way more than he loves me.
He'll probably sign it for you and then give you
Casey Musgraves tickets. But the address to catch Producer Hunter
this weekend, 1 to 3 at Boot Barn, 1718 U.S.
Highway 70 Southeast. And that's your good news on 96.9
The Cat. Favorite artists are right here on Graham in
(11:31):
the Mornings. It's 96.9 The Cat. 96.9 The Cat. This
is Graham in the Mornings. Hey, Graham.
Speaker 4 (11:38):
It's Josh Ward.
Speaker 3 (11:39):
How are you?
Speaker 1 (11:39):
Let's go, brother. When I think about Friday night at
Coyote Joe's, I'm thinking about Josh Ward.
Speaker 3 (11:45):
Heck yeah, man. We're so excited to be up there.
We've been wanting to get up there to see you
guys for a long time. Finally got the opportunity to
do it. We're definitely going to bring y'all a honky-tonk
show for sure.
Speaker 1 (11:56):
Well, we are excited again. Show is Friday night. Party
with Josh Ward. You got any surprises? And again, if
you do not, hate to put you on the spot,
but I know that Joe's, and we're super proud of Joe's, is...
a place that artists look forward to playing. You got
anything planned or anything in your back pocket for us?
Maybe some new music?
Speaker 3 (12:13):
Oh, yeah, definitely. We're bringing a new single, Heartbroken Time,
and pretty much put a show together just for you guys.
I mean, we're bringing out some of the older stuff,
the stuff that was featured on the Netflix series, and, yeah,
we're going to put out a heck of a show
for you guys.
Speaker 1 (12:30):
Well, we're looking forward to it. Would you mind being
so kind as to pick a number? We're going to
give our phone number out. You're going to pick the caller,
and we're going to give away some tickets to the
Coyote Joe Show to come out and support you, brother.
Speaker 4 (12:41):
Heck yeah, man.
Speaker 3 (12:42):
Let's call it caller number four.
Speaker 1 (12:44):
Caller number four. So you heard it from the artist himself,
Josh Ward, who's going to rip the lid off of
Coyote Joe's Friday night.
Speaker 4 (12:51):
1-800-FIRST.
Speaker 1 (12:52):
570-9690. Give us a call right now. Win your way
into that show. I know producer and Hunter, I are
both pumped to see it. Josh Ward, thank you for
your time, my man.
Speaker 4 (13:02):
Hey, thank you so much, Graham.
Speaker 3 (13:03):
We'll see you and Hunter later on.
Speaker 1 (13:04):
Hey, we appreciate you. Bye-bye. See you, buddy.
Speaker 2 (13:07):
It's time to sound off CAD Country with Graham in
the mornings.
Speaker 1 (13:11):
Grabbing the mornings. Linda from Shelby, what can we do
for you?
Speaker 4 (13:15):
I actually went kicking for y'all about 10 years ago
to go see Dolly in Charlotte. Maybe a little longer,
I don't know. Really? She was phenomenal.
Speaker 1 (13:22):
Yes, she played from 8 to 11.30.
Speaker 4 (13:25):
She came back out three times after 10.30.
Speaker 3 (13:27):
Wow.
Speaker 4 (13:28):
When she did her final talk. Yeah, she was awesome.
She was phenomenal. She just keeps giving and giving.
Speaker 1 (13:35):
If everybody could be like Dolly.
Speaker 3 (13:36):
The world would be a better place.
Speaker 1 (13:37):
Amen to that.
Speaker 3 (13:38):
Yeah, amen.
Speaker 1 (13:39):
So well said. Thank you so much for calling in
and helping us celebrate Dolly Parton.
Speaker 4 (13:43):
Absolutely. See ya.
Speaker 1 (13:45):
Linda from Shelby said it best. If we could all
be a little more like Dolly, we'll be a whole
lot better place. Ain't that the truth. Grab in the mornings, 96.9
The Cat. Sound off. What's your favorite thing or what
do you love about Dolly Parton?
