the Pentagon, and it drove itself from the outer ring
all the way to the inner ring.

Speaker 4 (14:05):

Speaker 1 (14:15):
As you can imagine, there was a great deal of
shock and a lot of.

Speaker 2 (14:20):
parade activity in the West Wing of the White House
when this happened. Shortly thereafter, the White House was actually evacuated.

Speaker 3 (14:26):
Well, let me just describe the scene that we have here,
and I'll back up a little bit. But right now,
I'm looking at the charred facade of the Pentagon, a
huge gaping hole on the side where the Pentagon teleport
is located, the side that faces Arlington Cemetery. In front
of me is a long line of rescue personnel with backboards.
They're just waiting for victims to be brought out so

(14:47):
they can rush them to nearby medical facilities.

Speaker 4 (14:51):

you ready?

Speaker 4 (15:20):
Let's roll.

Speaker 17 (15:21):
We were standing here and we were just discussing the
things that were going on.

Speaker 2 (15:25):
The second building just crumbled right.

Speaker 3 (15:27):
In front of us.

Speaker 19 (15:28):
It is difficult to make out through the debris and smoke,
but it does appear that a portion, the top portion
of the building, has collapsed down to the streets below.

Speaker 8 (15:38):
Oh, my gosh.

Speaker 2 (15:39):
And it is not there anymore.

Speaker 14 (15:42):
That should be it.

Speaker 15 (15:44):
Thanks very much.

Speaker 8 (15:47):
The whole side has collapsed?

Speaker 2 (15:48):
The whole building has collapsed.

Speaker 8 (15:50):
The whole building has collapsed?

Speaker 2 (15:53):
The building has collapsed.

Speaker 8 (15:54):
That's the southern tower you're talking about.

Speaker 14 (15:57):
Exactly.

Speaker 2 (15:57):
The second building that we witnessed the airplane enter has been,
the top half has been fully involved in flame. It
just collapsed. There is panic on the streets. Thousands of
people running up Church Street, which is what I'm looking
out on. trying to get away, but the entire, at
least as far as I can see, the top half

(16:17):
of the building, at least half of it, I can't
see below that, half of it just started with a
gigantic rumble, folded in on itself, and collapsed in a
huge plume of smoke and.

Speaker 3 (16:31):
Dust.

Speaker 10 (16:32):
9.59 a.m.

Speaker 4 (16:33):
The South Tower of the World Trade Center collapses.

Speaker 11 (16:36):
We were talking about massive casualties.

Speaker 20 (16:43):
We saw what happened in the cockpit. He was a
very active, take charge, assertive young man.

Speaker 11 (16:50):
And I'm just going to add to the chaos and
the trauma of the day by saying that a large
plane has now crashed just north, or shouldn't I say just,
but crashed about 10 o'clock in the last 15 minutes
north of Somerset County Airport, about 80 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.

Speaker 14 (17:09):
10.06 a.m.

Speaker 12 (17:11):
Flight 93 crashes just north of Somerset County Airport, 80
miles east of Pittsburgh.

Speaker 20 (17:18):
We have it from other people, another man on the
aircraft who called his wife, who said that he and
some other passengers were hoping to get at these guys somehow.

Speaker 4 (17:29):
10.08 a.m.

Speaker 17 (17:32):

did we shoot it down or did it crash? Several
hours later, he is assured it crashed.

Speaker 4 (17:45):
10.24 a.m.

Speaker 10 (17:46):
The FAA orders all inbound transatlantic flights to be diverted
to Canada.

Speaker 2 (17:51):
We heard a rumble.

Speaker 20 (17:53):
Like I've never heard before, and a firefighter ran towards me.
We ran as fast as we could.

Speaker 8 (17:59):
I lost my shoes.

Speaker 4 (18:01):
I fell down.

Speaker 20 (18:02):
He picked me up and slammed me into a wall
and covered me with him.

Speaker 19 (18:07):
The second tower, the only one that was standing, tower
number one, We saw some kind of explosion, a lot
of smoke come out of the top of the tower,
and then it collapsed down onto the streets below, much
like we saw the first tower just about a half
hour ago.

Speaker 4 (18:22):
The World Trade Center, both towers are now gone.

Speaker 10 (18:25):
My God, look at the skyline without the towers.

Speaker 4 (18:28):
Skyline, no towers, just billows of smoke.

Speaker 6 (18:30):
The second and last tower of the World Trade Tower
has just collapsed. It is about 10.30 Eastern Time. And
the tower has collapsed. We did not hear an explosion.
There was no sign telling us previous any kind of
warning that the building was going to collapse. The warning
for us were people just running in our direction. And

(18:52):
that's when we started to get.

Speaker 10 (18:53):
Out of the way.

Speaker 5 (18:54):
1028 a.m.

Speaker 4 (18:55):
The North Tower of the World Trade Center. collapses.

Speaker 19 (18:58):
Seeing the entire lower half of Manhattan just completely covered
in smoke, debris, dust, everything well south of Canal Street
is just completely covered in this smoke and dust at
this time. There is not anything recognizable of what were
the two trade towers.

Speaker 11 (19:16):
It's hard to put it into words, and maybe one
doesn't need to. Both trade towers. where thousands of people
were on this day, Tuesday, have now been attacked and

(19:37):
destroyed with thousands of people either in them or in
the immediate area adjacent to them.

Speaker 8 (19:51):
This is.

Speaker 11 (19:54):
There is simply no way to accurately describe the emotion.

Speaker 8 (19:59):
This evokes in people all.

Speaker 11 (20:02):
Over the world, friends of the United States and enemies
of the United States as well.

Speaker 4 (20:30):
President Bush puts the U.S. military on high worldwide alert.

Speaker 9 (20:34):
Freedom itself was attacked this morning by a faceless coward.
and freedom will be defended. I want to reassure the
American people that the full resources of the federal government
are working to assist local authorities to save lives and

(20:57):
to help the victims of these attacks.

Speaker 8 (21:02):
Make no mistake, the United States.

Speaker 9 (21:08):
Will hunt down and punish those responsible for these cowardly acts.

Speaker 8 (21:16):
I've been in regular contact with the Vice.

Speaker 9 (21:18):
President, Secretary of Defense, the National Security Team, and my Cabinet.
We have taken all appropriate security precautions to protect the
American people.

Speaker 8 (21:35):
Our military at.

Speaker 9 (21:36):
Home and around the world is on high alert status.
And we have taken the necessary security precautions to continue
the functions of your government. We have been in touch
with the leaders of Congress and with world leaders to

(21:57):
assure them that we will do whatever is necessary to
protect America and Americans I ask the American people to
join me in saying a thanks for all the folks
who have been fighting hard to rescue our fellow citizens,

(22:22):
and to join me in saying a prayer for the
victims and their families. The resolve of our great nation
is being tested, but make no mistake, We will show
the world that we will pass this test.

Speaker 9 (23:26):
Today our fellow citizens our way of life, our very
freedom came under attack in a series of deliberate and
deadly terrorist acts. The victims were in airplanes or in
their offices, secretaries, businessmen and women, military and federal workers,

(23:48):
moms and dads, friends and neighbors. Thousands of lives were
suddenly ended by evil, despicable acts of terror. The pictures
of airplanes flying into buildings, fires burning, huge structures collapsing,
have filled us with disbelief, terrible sadness, and a.

Speaker 8 (24:11):
Quiet, unyielding anger.

Speaker 9 (24:15):
These acts of mass murder were intended to frighten our
nation into chaos and retreat.

Speaker 8 (24:21):
But they have failed. Our country is strong.

Speaker 9 (24:25):
A great people has been moved to defend a great nation.
Terrorist attacks can shape the foundations of our biggest buildings,
but they cannot touch the foundation of America. These acts
shatter steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve.
America was targeted for attack because we're the brightest beacon

(24:47):
for freedom and opportunity in the world, and no one
will keep that light from shining. Today, our nation saw evil,
the very worst of human nature. And we responded with
the best of America, with the daring of our rescue workers,
with the caring for strangers and neighbors who came to

(25:09):
give blood and help in any way they could. Immediately
following the first attack, I implemented our government's emergency response plans.
Our military is powerful and it's prepared. Our emergency teams
are working in New York City and Washington, D.C.

Speaker 8 (25:27):
To help with local rescue efforts.

Speaker 9 (25:30):
Our first priority is to get help to those who
have been injured and to take every precaution to protect
our citizens at home and around the world from further attacks.
The functions of our government continue without interruption. Federal agencies
in Washington, which had to be evacuated today, are reopening
for essential personnel tonight and will be open for business tomorrow.

(25:56):
Our financial institutions remain strong and the American economy will
be open for business as well. The search is underway
for those who are behind these evil acts. I've directed
the full resources of our intelligence and law enforcement communities
to find those responsible and to bring them to justice.

(26:17):
We will make no distinction between the terrorists who committed
these acts and those who harbor them. I appreciate so
very much the members of Congress who have joined me
in strongly condemning these attacks. And on behalf of the
American people, I thank the many world leaders who have
called to offer their condolences and assistance. America and our

(26:40):
friends and allies join with all those who want peace
and security in the world. And we stand together to
win the war against terrorism. Tonight, I ask for your
prayers for all those who grieve. for the children whose
worlds have been shattered, for all whose sense of safety

(27:00):
and security has been threatened.

Speaker 8 (27:03):
And I pray they will be comforted by a power greater.

Speaker 9 (27:06):
Than any of us, spoken through the ages in Psalm 23.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow
of death, I fear no evil, for you are with me.
This is a day when all Americans from every walk
of life unite in our resolve for justice and peace.
America has stood down any enemies before, and we will

(27:29):
do so this time.

Speaker 8 (27:32):
None of us will ever forget this day.

Speaker 9 (27:35):
Yet we go forward to defend freedom and all that
is good and just in our world.

Speaker 8 (27:42):
Thank you. Good night. And God bless America.

Speaker 9 (28:01):
Thank you.
