Eight of New Zealand’s top fighters will be squaring off under international K-1 rules on June 8th at the Eventfinda Stadium.

In the electric atmosphere of an elimination 8-man tournament, the format requires the winner to defeat 3 opponents in a single night and provides the ultimate test of both skill and endurance.

D'Arcy made his way to the CKB gym to chat with upcoming local fighter Nixon Suddens.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldgrave from Used Talks EDB on.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
The Osport Breakfast. Now we're joined by Nixon Suddns. Actually,
as it happens, I'm down at the City Kickboxing gym.
I'm feeling quite small and weak, which is understandable to
pretty impressive place. Next in you're on the rise. There's
some good word about you and your your development. You're
fighting in well on the undercart of the ape man.
Tell us a little bit about yourself next and where

(00:34):
you come from, what you do.

Speaker 3 (00:35):
Yep. So I've grappled my whole life. I had dreams
of like competing at the Olympics, competing to juts at
a really high level. I've been training, scize, training competing
about since i was about seven years old, and I'm
in wrestling. I moved here to City Kickboxing when I
was I think fifteen, and just naturally started getting into

(00:56):
the kickboxing and MMA here and I just fell in
love with it. I hope to one day make a
career out of out of fighting, you know, just working
towards that every day.

Speaker 2 (01:08):
It's a family connection tour, isn't it. You Your mom's
been training here but before you were born. It makes
it been that long. And your old band's a black belt.

Speaker 4 (01:15):
Too, Yeah it is.

Speaker 3 (01:16):
My dad's a black belt in jiu jitsu and my
mom my mum has been training a long time as well.

Speaker 4 (01:21):
She's a brown belt.

Speaker 3 (01:23):
My mom's had had a few kickboxing, a few MMA
fights here and there.

Speaker 4 (01:28):
Yeah, it's awesome.

Speaker 3 (01:28):
They've they've really supported me my whole life, driving me
to training early mornings, late nights.

Speaker 4 (01:34):
They're the best.

Speaker 2 (01:35):
So yeah, only eighteen years old, it shouldn't it be
out causing a ruckus living a teenage life and this
works for you.

Speaker 4 (01:42):
Huh, yeah, this works.

Speaker 3 (01:43):
I'm locked in, just trying to got bigger goals, bigger
dreams than the most eighteen year olds.

Speaker 2 (01:48):
So where does it go? Obviously you're going to be
fighting on the undercard. Just tell us some what discipline
and how many rounds? Who are you fighting?

Speaker 3 (01:56):
I'm fighting a tough kid from Team Hardcore, Dan Brown.

Speaker 4 (02:02):
It should be a good fight. I was scheduled to
fight him.

Speaker 3 (02:03):
A couple of weeks ago, but he pulled out by
that he got pulled up by the medic and now
before the fight, so they rescheduled for King in the Ring.
So you know, I don't mind about King the Ring
is an awesome platform, probably the best platform for kickboxing
and Oceania. So really grateful to have this opportunity.

Speaker 2 (02:21):
So you'd be kickboxing now, yep, kickbox over how many rounds?

Speaker 4 (02:25):
I think three two minute rounds?

Speaker 3 (02:27):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (02:27):
Okay? So when when do you go up? And how
long do you fight? Fight for? This long? Is this there?
I suppose the stepping stone to bigger things. I was
pretty similar right the way through.

Speaker 4 (02:38):
Yeah, for sure.

Speaker 3 (02:39):
King in the Ring has been a stepping stone for
some of New Zealand's best fighters ever, like Israel Asanya,
Dan Hooker, Navajo. A lot of the guys here at
CKB who have gone on to do great things have
fought on King in the Ring, whether that'says a super
fight or in the Ape Man. So I'm grateful to
be able to have this opportunity so young into my career.

Speaker 2 (03:01):
As far as your age, when can you actually start
I mean you you're in now, You're fully flee and
ready to roll at the drop of the hat at
eighteen years old. You need a bit more time before
you start moving up.

Speaker 3 (03:14):
Obviously, want to still new to the to the sport
somewhat like I'm only only been striking for for about
two three years now, so I'm just looking to gain
experience and then hopefully a couple of years from now,
I compete on compete on the big shows like the
actual eight Man.

Speaker 2 (03:29):
Yeah, what does it take to get to the ape Man?

Speaker 3 (03:32):
I just just got to keep doing what I'm doing,
Just keep racking up fights, stay in the gym every day.

Speaker 4 (03:38):
We'll get there eventually.

Speaker 2 (03:39):
Tell us about your strengths. You started off on the floor,
but you're striking now, so I'm presuming your ground with
your grapplings where you I suppose excel right now.

Speaker 3 (03:48):
Yeah, Yeah, for sure, I'm definitely more of a grappler,
But that don't mean I can't scrap.

Speaker 4 (03:52):
I can scrap.

Speaker 2 (03:54):
Tell us what it was like when you first started striking,
you first started taking a few blow. It's a bit
of a wake up call for you, wouldn't it.

Speaker 3 (04:01):
Yeah. I remember my first sparring actually here at City Kickboxing.
My mom was really adamant on me budding in MMA,
and she told me to come along to sparring and
I did, and I got my ass whooped. I swear
it was like the hardest thing I ever did, looking
back when it's just a regular sparring. But I also
taken back just by how good everyone here was. And yeah,

(04:22):
it was awesome. I just yeah, I love it.

Speaker 2 (04:25):
It's good coming here and training and watching everybody. And
you got your superstars like or Sign and you've got
Dann Honk and everyone's just sitting around exactly the same, listening, respectful,
doing going through their drills. It's a very a leveling
place to be, isn't it.

Speaker 4 (04:38):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (04:38):
For sure, Like got the got the best coaches in
the world here, so we're just we're learning from them
every day.

Speaker 2 (04:46):
And your biggest lesson do you think since you've been here,
what would it.

Speaker 4 (04:49):
Be the biggest lesson? Sh just.

Speaker 3 (04:57):
You know, just just to stay the path and and train.
You just gotta you just got to put the work in.
Like there's nothing nothing different about Dan Hooker and Israel
aren't different to any of us. They just they just
put in the work.

Speaker 2 (05:12):
And and you've got to cut down. I mean, I'm
not tall, but you're you're a tall boy, but you're
dropping down.

Speaker 3 (05:18):
To what sixty four kilos. It's not a it's not
a terrible cup for me. I've been cutting wheat a
long time just because of wrestling and with the guidance
to some of the older dudes here, they make the
w weat cut really easy.

Speaker 2 (05:31):
Okay, so in your preparation for this, plainly you're not
doing a great deal. It's just just cutting. And what
else do you do before a fine?

Speaker 3 (05:39):
Obviously, just just the last few weeks, just been getting
getting fit up my training, and then this week just
just teping it off a bit, focusing on making weat.
Just a couple of pad sessions here and there, just
getting getting the body ready for Saturday.

Speaker 2 (05:52):
Tell us about the build up, like a few hours
the day of a fight. How do you go about it?
Do you have a set routine about how you prepare
for this?

Speaker 3 (05:59):
Not really, I just I just they relaxed to might
watch some of my favorite UFC fights, like just on
the TV all day, get some good food on me.

Speaker 4 (06:07):
Yeah, it's favorite fights.

Speaker 2 (06:09):
What are they? What ones do you reckon?

Speaker 4 (06:10):
I got I got heaps.

Speaker 3 (06:12):
I love rewatching Dan Hooker's King in the Ring fights,
some of Israel's older kickboxing fights.

Speaker 4 (06:18):
I love Max Hollowy, watch a lot.

Speaker 2 (06:20):
Of her great stuff. Hey, really looking forward to watching
your rise and rise Nixon, thank you very much for
your time.

Speaker 4 (06:26):
