Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldgrave from News Talk S'DB.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
And it's a very good morning to number five, a
lock for the Blues that this evening they take on
the Chiefs the right to call themselves Super Rugby Pacific
Champions for twenty twenty four. Sam Darry, Welcome to the program.
Doesn't get much bigger than this. How's the week been?
Have you managed to keep yourself focused in the face
of what will be a what forty four thousand strong

(00:34):
storm you're playing in front of?

Speaker 3 (00:36):
Yeah? Yeah, cheers are having me on, mate. No, it's
been an awesome week. I think, you know, we're we're
very aware of how lucky we are to have this week.
You know, we've worked hard all year and been able
to give ourselves this opportunity, and obviously there's what is it,
thirteen other teams or whatever at home, so we've just
tried to enjoy it. You know, it's pretty special weeks,
last kind of week this group will be together, so

(01:00):
I guess just trying to enjoy all those little, kind
of smaller things within the week and take it as
it comes.

Speaker 2 (01:05):
Looking some of the senior guys for inspiration, especially the
ones that might not be Becker Kirie, you only would
be one of them. And of course there's a bloke
standing right next to you. We don't know where he
came from. Patty tu Ups, Petrick, what happened when he
came back at the start of the week, did you
go what? Yeah?

Speaker 3 (01:23):
I think it was a bit of a shock to
all of us as well, Like we'd all kind of
joked about it, you know, like Vannon joked him about
it last week, and you know, when he got named
on the team sheet on Monday, I think everyone was
kind of looking around like, how good. So no, it's
just awesome to have Heaven back and so called for
him as well. Obviously missed out on the finals last
year with an injury and was looking like the same

(01:44):
this year. So for him to be able to give
himself a chance to players just awesome.

Speaker 2 (01:48):
You guys have been rolling along. You'd be loving the
Chiefs right now, maybe not before kickoff, but what they
did last week with that shock and all, and they
blew the Hurricanes off their own part, you're thinking, yeah,
home final, So you say thanks Chiefs, but say now
lie down, we want to smash it.

Speaker 3 (02:03):
Yeah, executly, it's a bit of a tough one a
because we're all, you know, real pretty big Chiefs fans
last weekend and now all of a sudden, I've going
to switch our focus. But now they're heading their strips
at the right time of the season. You know, they
had a great one over the Reds and Hamilton and
then obviously we all saw that game in Wellington last weekend,
which was just an awesome game for both sides. So
you know, we know that they're going to be a

(02:23):
bloody tough test and it's going to be a dogfight
on Saturday.

Speaker 2 (02:26):
You'd be feeling pretty good about what you guys got
up to last week as well. Both teams are peaking
at precisely the right time, so it's going to be
what do they say, the irresistible force and the immovable object.
This is top quality football, Sam, Yeah, you know it is.

Speaker 3 (02:41):
It is. Obviously we started really well on the weekend
and probably let u foot off the gas a weave it.
But you know, when's a win when it's finals footy,
so you take what you can get and move on.
But we know we're going to have to be better
this weekend.

Speaker 2 (02:54):
Whereabouts do you think you have to lift? Vern must
have been trying to hammer something and you although I'd
suggest he's probably quite relaxed about the week, saying you've
done the work, now you know what you have to do.
But has there been one major objective that has been
looking towards.

Speaker 3 (03:07):
Sam, No, it's much of the same. Like, you know,
we trust our game. You know, we've we've kind of
been playing very similar style for the last all season,
really since about November, So it's more about just trusting
what we've done, trusting the work, and then I guess
it's just a consistency within that, because consistency of effort,
of accuracy, of our discipline, just all those kind of

(03:27):
little things that matter of finance football.

Speaker 2 (03:28):
Your discipline, i'd say, will be the absolute key thing here,
last thing, and we just go down three, go down six,
have a man sent off. So I suppose that the
balance here though, is that you can't really mind your
p's and q's because your game plan has been based
on an absolute brutal forward pack that is going to
just mash their way right at the middle. So finding
that happy middle ground difficult.

Speaker 3 (03:51):
Yes, and No, I think it's it's just about, as
I see, kind of being accurate and you know, like
we want to be physical, we want to dominate collisions,
but it's about being smart about that as well. I guess,
not letting the emotion of the occasion kind of take
a hold of you and to something sarily. So it's
just about kind of being disciplined and control with that,
I guess aggression and kind of in those collisions.

Speaker 2 (04:13):
Biggest game in your career, Sam.

Speaker 3 (04:15):
Dowry, Yeah, yeah, definitely, definitely you'd.

Speaker 2 (04:18):
Be pinching yourself, but pinching yourself in a good way
because this is what you train for. This is all
the early mornings. I'm dragging the folks off to watch
a game of rugby when the frost is still on
the ground like that. It probably happens in Awld, But
this is what it's all peaked too, right, This is
the where they go from now, National selection that's the
next step, isn't it. Yeah?

Speaker 3 (04:37):
You know you did right. It's an awesome occasion. And
as you say, these are the kind of games you
want to play as a young kid growing up, you
watch them on the telly and biggest dream of being
a part of them. So you know, the nerves will
kind of set into it closer to the game. But
I guess, as you say, it's just about kind of remembering,
I guess how lucky you are to be in this
occasion and just trying to make the most of it.

Speaker 2 (04:56):
Packed Eden Park. Wow, playing in front of a crowd
like that superb. I tell you being in a crowd
like that is quite overpowering, and you may have been
as well when you were younger, playing in front of
that cutting that crowd off? Do you do that or
do you embrace the noise in the action and the chaos.

Speaker 3 (05:15):
Personally, I quite like to, you know, take a moment
at the start of the game before kickoff to kind
of have a look around and just enjoy it, because,
as you say, it's pretty special. You know, like not
many people get to experience that. But once the ball's
kicked off, you know, you're kind of pretty pretty locked
in on what's in front of you, and you kind
of just subconsciously block it out to be fair, But yeah,

(05:36):
it's definitely something that's very special and something that's cool
to kind of acknowledge at the start.

Speaker 2 (05:41):
Pregame warm up. What happens in a couple of hours, Sam,
what do you do this afternoon? You've got a ritual
that you go through or you just go with how
the flow feels, right then.

Speaker 3 (05:50):
Yeah, pretty much, pretty crazy, No real rituals. Just get
a big feed in place. We've usually got a bit
of a walkthrough, so we'll get that sorted and just
make sure we kind of dot our eyes and cross
our te's and then maybe every we nap and then
get ready to go.

Speaker 2 (06:03):
First teen to fifteen minutes. Last week the Chiefs shock
and or you guys better watch that because they put
the game almost out of reach and we only liked
fifteen minutes.

Speaker 3 (06:13):
In Uh yeah, yeah, for sure. You know, we've touched
on the importance of starting well, and I thought we
did it against the Bumbies in the weekend. Chie said
she did it quite well to us when we played
three four weeks ago. So as I said, we know
the kind of threats I got to cook across the park,
and we're going to have to be accurate and precise
with how we start.

Speaker 2 (06:32):
Promises so much, really looking forward to the entertainment this evening.
I'll be there screaming and shouting and no I won't
be wearing a crusader's jersey because that's just not kosher.
Maybe I'll pinch a blues jumper off someone. What do
you reckon, Sam?

Speaker 3 (06:46):
Yeah, that's the way we have to sort something out
for you.

Speaker 2 (06:48):
You're a good man, looking forward to the X and
you go well, play hard, play safe and play with discipline,
my friend.

Speaker 3 (06:56):
Thanks Matte, I appreciate it.
