Speaker 1 (00:00):
Joining US now as Jonathan Savage, I FOXT correspondent in London,
to talk about the latest strikes in Syria from Israeli forces.
And apparently there's an organization, a religious organization I understand
Jonathan called the Drews, and I saw the lead on
this and it mentioned that the strikes were trying to
go after them. In fact, that's the opposite. They're trying
(00:21):
to protect the Drews as they go after the bad
guys in Syria. Good morning, Welcome.
Speaker 2 (00:26):
In Hi there. Good morning. Yes.
Speaker 3 (00:28):
Firstly, I think a lot of people don't know who
the Drews are. I think I have heard of the
until long ago. They're a minority and they're based in Syria,
Lebanon and Israel.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
The Drew's faith.
Speaker 3 (00:39):
Is an offshoot of Shia Islam, although their followers are
not Muslims, they got their own unique identity and belief.
About half a million of them live in Syria. About
one hundred and fifty thousand of them live in Israel
and are considered loyal to the Israeli state.
Speaker 2 (00:54):
Many of them serve in the Israeli military.
Speaker 1 (00:56):
Now, Jonathan, when you talk about the Drews, this is
a faith it also involves you know, God of course,
but also reincarnation and the eternity of our souls all
coming together. They threw me with the reincarnation thing here.
Speaker 2 (01:11):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:12):
I think we were talking about Buddhism recently, weren't we
them and the Dalai Lama.
Speaker 2 (01:15):
We're talking about reincarnation here too. Yeah, it's an Abrahamic faith.
Speaker 3 (01:20):
I don't think there are any other certainly I can
think of Abrahamic faith that believe in and reincarnation.
Speaker 2 (01:26):
You know, they are a very sort of tight knit community.
Speaker 3 (01:30):
They don't encourage marriages with people from other religions.
Speaker 2 (01:35):
I think there's you.
Speaker 3 (01:36):
Know, a good few thousands of them, maybe a few
tens of thousands of them within the United States, so
but not completely unheard of out of the area.
Speaker 1 (01:42):
Yeah, and they're not a violent organization, so we need
to kind of clarify that, and that's why they're trying
to protect them and that they're not part of a
terrorist organization.
Speaker 2 (01:51):
Correct, Yeah, that's right.
Speaker 3 (01:52):
What's been happening is that in recent days there's been
fighting in the south of Syria between tribal fighters loyal
to the Urim Syrian government and militia from the Druze
ethnic group. The Drew say they're acting in self defense.
Benjamin Nittanyahu, the is Really Prime minister, has attacked the
Syrian military headquarters of the Drone, saying that he will
(02:13):
protect the DRUS. The Syrian government has been accused of
carrying out a campaign of terror against minorities by the DRUS,
but now.
Speaker 2 (02:21):
There's been a ceasefire declared.
Speaker 3 (02:22):
Syria's interim president claims it's his priority to protect the
country's Druis citizens. So clearly there's a mismatch between actions
and words at the moment.
Speaker 1 (02:32):
Well, when you talk about the battle of the reason
Israel's pounded Syria like this, I mean, obviously there's some
factions of what's happening around this war that are in
Syria causing problems. Are these proxies out of Iran?
Speaker 2 (02:48):
Not necessarily.
Speaker 3 (02:49):
There are a number of factions and ethnic groups within Syria,
some of whom are loyal to the Syrian Interurian government,
some are whom are hostile, which makes the whole country
quite a dangerous place. And something these really governments are
concerned about is that anti Israeli trips could get too
close to their border. Trying for example, take back the
(03:11):
occupied goal on Height, try to attack Israeli and cause
general chaos. The international community, even though they might otherwise
not necessarily be friends with this Islambus government, they want
them to succeed. They want the Islam's government that's in
place to hold Syria together because lying in wait, you've
(03:31):
got Isis standing by Kurdish forces, Turkish back militia, loyalist
to the old Assad regime. The fear is that if
this government doesn't survive, what could come next could be
a bloody civil war and possibly a government even more
hostile to Israel in the West.
Speaker 1 (03:49):
Yeah, with that said, so this is the part just
I mean, it's obviously part of the madness going on
in the Middle East right now, but this is not
This is another problem not necessarily tied to the Iranians
and what's been happening with the attack from the terraces
and Gaza.
Speaker 3 (04:08):
Yeah, in the past, Syria was within Iran's orbit and
they were allies of the Syrian dictator Bashar al Asad.
What the United States really wants is to get Syria
out of Iran's orbit, to make sure that Iran backed
factions or Iran supporting factions can no longer hold power
in Syria. They want Syria to be a country the
(04:29):
United States can deal with, have a working relationship with,
and a country which will be a buffer between Iran
and Israel.
Speaker 1 (04:37):
I understand. Thank you so much. I appreciate you. Jonathan
