Speaker 1 (00:00):
This fire broke out early this morning. At about six thirty.
We got a call from a buddy of mine who
was getting off Red mount Expressway over by Saint Vincent's
on University. You could see the fire that's on to
five point South. It was that big. In fact, it's
still going. Russell Jones joins us now from WBrC Fox six. Russell,
you've been there all morning. We're watching a live feet

(00:21):
it looks like this fire is still raging.

Speaker 2 (00:26):
Yeah, it's massive. About four thirty this morning, I was
at our station. It's you know, on top of Red
Mountain by Bulkan. I look over the south side. There
is this huge, massive cloud of smoke. I told my photographer.
I said, man, we need to go down there.

Speaker 1 (00:41):
Fourteen As I.

Speaker 2 (00:42):
Drove down here, just a massive fire at one building
and then it quickly spread and right now it's still burning.
The main building is pretty much gone, still got fire there,
but then it spread to three other buildings. So basically,
this whole little block on twentieth Street South, just about
a block up from Mellow Mushroom if you're familiar with

(01:03):
the area, Yeah, has got a lot of damage.

Speaker 1 (01:05):
Yeah it What do you hear about as far as
residents in these buildings, are these apartment buildings? Are they businesses?
Are they ab buildings? What's going on with.

Speaker 2 (01:16):
The the original fire from what people that outside here
have told me. The original building somebody who does own it,
but nobody lives there. There's no business. It's I guess
you could call it abandoned. That one's pretty much going.
But the big problem is the two buildings beside it
are residential buildings. You've got I think it's Cobb laying

(01:38):
condos on one side. You've got some other apartments and
condos on the other side. But I've been asking around,
I've been asking a lot of people. So far, I
haven't heard of anybody being heard good. But there's a
lot of people standing outside in the pajamas, you know, worried, upset,
uh their apartments going. I mean, there's a lot of
damage to these residential areas structures.

Speaker 1 (01:59):
Bobby, the fire department is there, and lots of first responders,
so no ambulance is pulling up and nobody getting in smoking.

Speaker 2 (02:09):
None of that. No, we haven't seen any of that.
Just a bunch of fire trucks here wrapped around the
whole building. You can wrap, I mean the whole block.
You wrap around the whole block, and you'll see fire
trucks just pouring water everywhere, trying to get this thing
on her control. It's not it doesn't look like it's
going to spread anywhere else, contained to these four buildings.

(02:30):
But pretty scary morning for everybody lives over here.

Speaker 1 (02:33):
Yeah, one hundred percent. I mean, I've had a bunch
of people send pictures over and you know, driving by
and taking you know, I would assume traffic's being diverted.
Can you get up twentieth Street from the Mellow Mushroom
area towards vulcan ors All block.

Speaker 2 (02:49):
Yeah, it's blocked off, there's Yeah, it's completely blocked out there.
Fire trucks everywhere, fire hoses everywhere. It's still a really
active fire. All three of these four buildings.

Speaker 1 (03:02):
Just awful. Well, pray nobody's injured in this Russell and
we'll check back with you next hour and see where
we're at with all of this. But once again, still
you didn't hear anything about the potential cause of this fire,
did you.

Speaker 3 (03:15):
No.

Speaker 2 (03:16):
I have talked to some residents that say it started
at this one house, that nobody lives there. They thought
maybe there were some people in there trying to stay warm.
Nothing confirmed, but that is what people are saying that
are walking around out here talking.

Speaker 1 (03:30):
Yeah. Yeah, so well, Russell, I appreciate you, Thank you
for coming on, and I'll check back with you and
you know, next hour if I can.

Speaker 2 (03:38):
All right, sounds good, Jack, all.

Speaker 1 (03:40):
Right, buddy, appreciate you. It's seven forty seven Alabama's Morning News. McKenzie.
We were watching this live feed on the internet right now.
This fire looks like it's not anywhere near being under control. Well,
this debris that's flying off that's still on fire too.
I just hope it doesn't spread anymore. Yeah, exactly. And
as Russell said, it started in what they believe is
an abandoned building or home or but it's spread to

(04:02):
where there's actual residence. Good news is he has not
heard of anybody being heard or injured in all this.
Four thirty. I thought it started around six. Yeah, yeah, no,
it's apparently. You know, when Rob called the first caller
we had this morning at about six thirty and told
us about it, it was already you know, by the
time if Rob could see it at six thirty from
Saint Vincent's hospital all the way over to five point South. Yeah,

(04:25):
this thing's, according to Russell, now started a couple of
hours before that. First going for a minute, then all right,
we'll check back in the next hour at some point
and get an update from Russell as he is on
the scene once again. Twentieth Street forget about it over
there by Mullow mushroom going up the hill towards Vulcan closed.
Don't even think about getting past the area. But the

(04:45):
fire is still raging right now, and obviously the effort
from the fire department is just massive right now. The
fire on the south side apparently has been burning since
four thirty this morning and is still out of control.
John Mounts, our program director, is there near the fire
right now. John, I imagine you're as close as they'll
let you get.

Speaker 2 (05:04):
Well, let me get.

Speaker 3 (05:04):
Any closer, JTF on twentieth South and the corner of
thirteenth Avenue South and yeah, right here behind the fire
truck and the flanes, I would say, are easily you're
looking at a three couple three story of Parker buildings
being entire top four completely gone. The planes were going
I would say at least thirty forty feet through the air.

(05:25):
They've just now got it down to words a little
more manageable. A lot of smoke now, and they've got
the high you know, the high angle booms up shooting
water from the top, with a lot of water in
the street and a lot of fire people right here.

Speaker 1 (05:40):
Yeah, obviously avoid the area. They've got the roads closed,
fire department trucks everywhere trying to get this thing under control.
But yeah, it's still there's a live feed online right
now that Mackenzie and I've been watching here in the studio,
and the flames are just still roaring. As you mentioned, John,
smoke everywhere. We spoke with Russell Jones from WBrC Fox
six about fifteen minutes ago. He's there as well with you.

(06:03):
Have you heard anything about the cause of this. We
were speculating that perhaps this is being an empty building,
there may have been some homeless folks trying to stay
warm and maybe a little fire and then got control.
Strictly speculation, but any word on what has happened as
far as how this got started and any injuries.

Speaker 3 (06:22):
So far, so far, we don't have any word on that,
and obviously the all the first spots, you're very busy
I try to seek with it, but they're all they're
all actually involved in the situation. But no, I don't
have to. I can also tell you the building next
to the big three story of Parkfield, it gets also
on fire. Ditory, going back to that one, that one
actually looks a little more out of control of that
fine as fish. That where it started sports streak to

(06:45):
the upper floors of the build Here on plane, sir.

Speaker 1 (06:50):
John, we're starting to lose you here. You're cutting up
a little bit. But we'll check back with you shortly
after eight. If you're going to be there, we'll try
and catch back up with you. John Mounts, our program doctor.
There on the fire points south here this fire, as
he mentioned, the building behind this, the first one is
on fire, and I think Russell said it's actually spread
to another building. So three buildings on fire in the area.

(07:11):
The one is abandoned, the other two are actually condos,
are residential structures. So praying that nobody has been injured
in this fire. And people on the streets, as Russell
had mentioned, in their pajamas this morning and at thirty
eight degrees, a little chili, but they've lost you know,
probably their home and you know everything in it. It's
a bad fire that's certainly not something that's going to

(07:33):
be under control here anytime soon. It's still roaring like
it started fifteen to twenty minutes ago, so we'll keep
you updated
