(00:01):
All right, thirty three minutes afterthe top of the are at Home with
Gary Sullivan, which always means it'stime for our project of the week.
And what we're gonna talk about todayis garage stores and different trends in garage
doors. And really, if youlook at your house, especially if the
garage is facing the street, it'sprobably a third of the front of your

(00:22):
house, and sometimes we'd like totalk about trends, and that's exactly what
we're gonna do. We're also goingto talk about the energy efficiency of garage
doors and how to purchase a garagedoor. Joining us is Tina Mieller.
She is the marketing director at HossDoors and Tina, welcome to At Home
with Gary Sulvan. How are you. I'm doing great, Gary, Thank

(00:46):
you for having me on the showtoday. I really appreciate it. You're
quite welcome. So let's just talkabout HOSS Door. Kind of give us
a kind of a background about HossDoor, and then we'll get into trends.
Tour a hot stour is a familyowned company and they purchased the company

(01:07):
back in nineteen forty seven, andthey purchased it with the desire truly to
serve the garage door dealer industry becausethey were dealers themselves. They were selling
gradge doors and they just couldn't geta manufacturer to service them like they had
hoped. So they then decided tomanufacture grade doors and service the dealers as

(01:30):
they would want to be serviced. So it's kind of a unique story that
they went into the business to helpour their fellow garage door dealers, right
right. You know, one ofthe interesting things about garage doors and you
can sense shud some light on andI talked about how you know when you're
looking at a house and that garagesin the front or even on the side.

(01:52):
The garage door is a big partof the ex tier of your home
and and the you know, recoupingthe money of an investment in a garage
door is probably one of the highestof anything else in the house. Yes,
right now, we are seeing somereally great trends with the garage door,

(02:14):
especially in our area. The trendin our area in the Midwest here
is that there are on average threegarage doors on a home. So you
either have a double garage, adouble car garage door with a single or
you have three singles, which isa lot of the front of your house,
so it truly impacts curb appeal. What is great right now if you

(02:36):
look at remodeling's cost versus value study, it is saying that investing and replacing
a garage door gives you a returnon investment of one hundred and two percent,
so you actually get more value inyour house than what you put into
it. So it's a really greatinvestment if you're looking to do a project
that's to really increase your curb appeal. But nice is that it generally happens

(03:01):
in one day. It may takeyou a while to pick out your design
and make sure that's the colors youwant and take advantage of the current trends,
but then a professional garage door insolo will do it in one day.
So it's really nice. You comehome and then you've got a beautiful
garage door. Yeah, it's aone day overall. Well, let's talk
about trends. So I know anumber a few years ago we start seeing

(03:25):
more glass indoors and things like that, but what are the trends in color
and style right now? We areseeing a lot and it's continuing. It's
been this way for the last acouple of years towards dark, dusty colors,
and that's because they really provide arich color and a richness to your

(03:47):
home. So we're seeing those darkcolors, and then we're seeing true or
neutrals, so a neutral color thatdoesn't trend too much to a pink or
too much to a yellow, buta true neutral, And that's because it
really gives the longevity to the colorand the upgrade you're doing on your home.
So we're seeing those, but toyour point, we are also seeing

(04:11):
a lot of added glass, whichdoes even if you don't change the color
of your of your garage door, but you add glass to it, it
makes a huge impact on curb appeal, just the look of it and increases
that curb appeal and that return oninvestment. Sure, sure, I think
it used to be been in thisindustry for a long time. A house

(04:32):
would have a garage door. Youprobably still see some older houses with old
wood garage doors. It wasn't somethingyou really looked at in terms of curb
appeal. But I think we're alsofocused on trends and you know the looks
of our homes that garage doors reallyare. When I say one day renovation.

(04:56):
It truly is it turns out tobe a real show piece are home
do people? Do you find peopledoing that more now or is it just
on my garage door broke, Ineed doune door And no, we are
seeing guests that you're one hundred percentright, where people are wanting to improve
the look of their home and they'rereally using the garage door. It used

(05:18):
to be the trend that the garagedoor would blend with the home, so
you were matching the color to theexterior of your home, so you're siding
or you're cladding, But now they'rereally looking at we're seeing the trend where
the garage doors coming closer to theimpact of the front door, and that's
probably due to the fact that mostof the time they're both spacing the road.

(05:40):
So now you're seeing they want thatgarage door to pop and often match
the front door. And if theydon't match the front door, a lot
of times they'll match accents on thehouse. So if you have stone and
brick and then wood accents, they'llmatch the garage door to that wood accent.
Or it's very popular now to haveblack accented windows, and they'll put
a nice carbon we have carbon black. They'll put a nice black garage door

(06:03):
on to really pop off the frontof the house. So we're really seeing
the garage door come forward as anaccent piece on the home. That's the
trend we're seeing in it's doing well. Yeah, and since it is such
a big part, I'm sure peoplelistening to this right now are thinking,
yeah, but man if I choosethe wrong color, and I know.
Hoss Door has a great feature whereyou can actually try on garage doors and

(06:27):
tell me about that. Yes,we have a new tool and it's kind
of unique. It is a visualizer, which means you can upload onto our
tool called called hoss, create apicture of your home from the front and
then add on garage doors and tryon different colors, try on wood grains.
You can even pick different stamp stylesplacements of your windows, so you

(06:51):
could try putting them across the toplike you traditionally see, or dropping windows
down the side to give it alittle bit more of a modern feel to
your home. So you can reallytry on a lot of different combinations and
get the feel of what looks bestfor your home. And you can even
save those projects because if you're likeme, you want to go back and

(07:12):
look at it a couple of timeswhere you make your final choice. But
you can do that. But what'sgreat about the tool then is when you
are ready and not before you're ready, you can actually send that project to
a host or a garage door dealernear you and get a quote on it.
So and they can help you workthrough any garage codes that are building

(07:36):
codes that are in your area thatyou need to comply with, So they
can help you with the technical side, but the tool will really help you
with the aesthetics. And it's areally good way to not you know,
to make sure you're like what you'redoing right. I guess the other thing
and two about garage doors. We'vetalked about the aesthetics and the trends is

(07:58):
people are looking for efficiency now.And I know the garudge store industry is
kind of going through a whole changein terms of how they communicate the efficiency
of a garage store. And Hostadorhas been very involved in that. And
tell me a little bit about theefficiency of garage doors. I mean,
they're they're pretty good now. Yes, our garge store industry GASMA, decided

(08:26):
that we as a whole as allgarage door manufacturers are going to switch to
U factor, and that is becauseYOU factor is highly used in building codes
for energy efficiency and thermal efficiency forthe home, and it allows architects to
use that U factor to improve theoverall building envelope energy efficiency. So we

(08:50):
actually switched from our value, whichwas a calculated value by each manufacturer,
to a third party, accredited labtested YOU factor, and so now it
is a much more transparent and easilyused by architects or building officials to see

(09:11):
what the energy efficiency is. Andit actually measures the heat transfer through the
garage door versus just the insulating powerof it, which was the our value.
So U factor really represents how thegarage door will perform much more authentically,
all consumers to make chwoices on it. And yes, you're right,
they have gotten much more efficient.Yeah, I you know, twenty years

(09:35):
ago, twenty five years ago,the window replacement window industry kind of went
through that whole change in R factorto U factor because you know, those
different manufacturers kind of playing games. So this kind of keeps everybody playing the
same game. So that's gonna behelpful. That's gonna be helpful. And

(09:56):
of course the glass two. I'msure there's different th This is a glass
that comes into play too. Ofhaving an energy efficient door to do you
have different thicknesses of glass, Yes, we a half or what we've done
to make it easier for the consumeris our thermally efficient doors kind of increase
in thickness, which the thicker thedoor, the more thermally efficient they are.

(10:20):
But also the thicker the glass, the more thermally efficient is. So
we do have eighth inch opretions thatare more pro warmer regions, but like
in our region of the country, you're going to want to go with at
least the half inch flats, whichis yes, because it just provides much
more thermal efficiency and it keeps faucefrom getting on the inside of the garage

(10:45):
door. Eighth inch glass can sauce. So we recommend in the coolder areas
where you do have warmth inside yourgarage door and then you can have winter
outside, that you go with themore thermally efficient half inch glass. Sure,
well, quickly we'll divide those oxen. Yeah, well, we'll quickly
run out of time. So Ido want to get how important it is
to have professional installation and people tohelp you choose. You know when we

(11:09):
talk about thermally efficient doors, andI know you have an extensive dealer network
and to help with that professional installation. Is that all done on the website
or how do we get in touchto a professional? Sure, you can
visit ww dot hasdoor dot com andthat's spelled h as and right on there.

(11:35):
We have a dealer network that youcan reach out to. You can
email them through the system or givethem a call. And it is very
important to use a garage dodoor professionalbecause we can give you the quality door
and the quality glass, but theinstaller will really look at your garage and
help you come up with tips andtricks to make it better. Like he
may change the radius on your garagedoor track system to bring higher to the

(12:00):
ceiling and give you a lot morespace. So they add a lot of
value to the process. Yeah, that's great. Now I do encourage people.
It's hasshaasdoor dot com been in businessfor a long time. I know
that, and like you said, family owned and operated and plenty of choices.
And again, tell me how youload up that picture. Is that

(12:22):
a separate website or I know alot of people be interested in that.
You can go to our main websiteand then the tool is listed on almost
every page on our website. It'scalled hass Create. You just click on
it and it takes you to thesite where you can upload a picture and
you just click a button and wehave two processes. One will walk you

(12:43):
through step by step, and ifyou're technologically savvy, we have a short
cut step that will take your rightto loading up the picture and getting started.
So there's two ways to use thetool, but each of one of
them will get you touring want tobe getting that picture loaded up, so
you can and try on some grudgesure, and there'll be a dealer located
there a dealer locator. They're alsocorrect, right, and you can send

(13:09):
them whenever you're ready, send thatproject right to them. It's digitally goes
right to them and they can seethe picture, your house, and all
of the data needed for like yourentry size and what all you've selected,
so when they call you back, they actually can give you some meaningful information.
