Speaker 1 (01:04):
She's an author, local TV cooking and herbal expert, the
original barefoot gardener.
Speaker 2 (01:08):
All this.
Speaker 1 (01:08):
She does wear socks. When she wrote her tills Ladies
and Gentlemen. Her website about eating dot com Rita made
her hike and fell.
Speaker 3 (01:20):
Ah.
Speaker 1 (01:20):
Big crowd, just wring, big crowd, all your fans, not
all of them, but as many as we can pack
in here.
Speaker 2 (01:28):
Well, that's good that they showed up.
Speaker 1 (01:30):
They did it.
Speaker 2 (01:32):
I am here behind closed doors.
Speaker 1 (01:34):
The today, behind closed doors.
Speaker 2 (01:37):
Yes I am. I don't even think well. I can
probably get out my kitchen door now. A couple days
ago we had to scoot the screen door back and
forth to get out. So it's been interesting but beautiful,
and like you said earlier, I am enjoying this. I
have to say.
Speaker 1 (01:55):
So you have been kind of snowed in this week.
Speaker 2 (01:57):
Oh yeah, just like everybody. Now. Did you get to work? Okay?
Speaker 1 (02:00):
Oh absolutely so you always do well. I like driving
that stuff. But I tell you, I, just like Dan
and I were talking earlier, I think they've done an
outstanding job, uh clearing off the roads through all of
this stuff, and uh, you know, except for out in
front of the studios. Don't get Dan started, right, I
know I heard, yeah, don't get him started. I want
to be nice now that Rita's on. Yeah, gotta be
(02:22):
nice because Rita's here. So anyway, so yeah, I hope
you're enjoying the stoke because I am too. So all right,
So for five weeks now, I've been dealing with still
dealing with a raspy voice, Still got a little bit
of a nagging cough. I know everybody I talked to
is going through the same thing, the cough, the whole
nine yards. So your recipe today on our website at
(02:43):
Ron Wilson online dot com. Your homemade cough syrup couldn't
be more timely.
Speaker 2 (02:49):
Well, you know, I was thinking that because I make
batches of it, it seems like, especially this time of year,
and it's so simple. I mean honey and lemon, so
most of the time we have those on hand. And
so I'm going to tell you how to make it,
mister Wilson, and then I want your ideas too, because
(03:10):
you usually tweak my recipes. So here's what I do.
I'll just take a lemon that I've washed, washed well,
and I try to get organic, but honestly, if you can't,
it's okay, but organic, of course it's better. Then I
just roll it around on the counter, you know, with
palm side down, and that puts puts pressure on the lemon,
(03:32):
so it just helps release the juices and it also
breaks down the cellfuck structure. And then I just cut
that lemon in chunks and then I pour some of
our raw honey over it and just smush all that
down with the spoon. And then you got to let
that sit if you can't, a couple days in the
fridge before using for all the good things to meld together,
(03:53):
and you want to store it in the fridge too,
And then what you do, you just take a teaspoonful
is needed, you know, a few times a day if
you have to. And once in a while I'll add
some ginger fresh ginger root because that's really anti inflammatory
as well. And you know, raw honey. Most of us
(04:14):
love it, and the reason is it's got anti viral properties,
it's anti bacterial, I mean, if you ever cut you
can even put a little raw honey on it, and
anti fungal properties too, so it's good for your digestive health.
It's great for your immune system, and so is the lemons.
So those two together really just immune system boosters. And
(04:38):
when you're not feeling well, especially you with that nagging cough,
really does help. And it's pretty cheap and easy and
so natural, nothing artificial in there.
Speaker 1 (04:49):
And I also see that this could help calm my nerves.
Speaker 2 (04:53):
Oh yeah, yeah it does. I need that, Yeah don't
we all? Mister Hikinfell and I have been stuff together
in here and I walk every day and I've been
getting out, but he hasn't been getting out too much.
So yeah, raw, honey, does you know what? It relieves
pain and it does calm the nerves too, And also
it's an expectorant too. So when you got that coffin
(05:16):
that nucas stuff that's way far down, that's really good.
And lemon is as well. So as as I said,
an easy drink, an easy drink when you're not feeling great.
And when we were little, when you were talking about
sore throat, mom always gave us pineapple juice. Did your
mom did now do that? Nah?
Speaker 1 (05:35):
She just said suck it up.
Speaker 2 (05:41):
Oh really, sore throats and pineapple juice? I remember? So
now was okay you didn't even go into that.
Speaker 1 (05:49):
Yeah, just suck it up n get out there and
feed those horses.
Speaker 2 (05:55):
That's you know, that's that didn't hurt you for sure.
Speaker 1 (05:58):
I made it okay. So anyway, So pineapple juice. I
thought that was interesting because you talk about, you know,
pineapple juice, and then you I think you were when
you were you got a talking about combining pineapple juice
and a bunch of other things. White of pineapple juice,
(06:19):
I mean, is that same like the honey with the
anti inflammatory and all of that.
Speaker 2 (06:24):
Yeah, it's good for sore throats. It really does soothe
sore throats. So you just think of something like this.
What I do is I'll just take equal amounts of
by the way, no sugar added. You know, the fruit punch,
pineapple juice, and cranberry pomegranate juice. Cranberry is so good
for you too your kidneys, and pomegranates full of anim
(06:45):
flammatories as well. So just mix those three together and
all you do is just chill it before drinking. It's
really pretty and it's good for you. So just equal
amounts of fruit, natural fruit punch, pineapple juice, and cranberry
pomegranate or just cranberry juice. So kids love that one
too because, as I said, it's very pretty and it's
(07:06):
it reminds them of the fruit punch that you can
buy in those.
Speaker 1 (07:08):
Little bottles fruit punch, pineapple juice, and cranberry pomegranate juice.
Speaker 2 (07:15):
And think of the antioxidant qualities too when you think
of the punch, because a lot of times the natural
fruit punches that you buy have a couple other juices
mixed in, like apple juice and grape juice, so those
are good too. So I think anything that's going to
keep you hydrated, don't you, because we tend to get
so dehydrated, especially when we're not feeling well. So these
(07:38):
are hydrating drinks too, so it's you know, good for
you bonus there.
Speaker 1 (07:43):
So it's you know, so we make this mix up.
We got it in a picture like I mean, is
there like a recommended like every four hours or so
drink a glass of it or just drink as needed or.
Speaker 2 (07:55):
Well I think with a well, first of all, with
the kuffs are of several times the day, and the
immune booster juice and those kinds of juices, you could
take it when you're thirsty a couple times a day.
I wouldn't overdo on it. But just like you drink
orange juice or you know something like that a couple
times a day with your meals or without, so again,
(08:18):
keep yourself hydrated and then you have all those wonderful
health qualities too. So those are some good ones. And
talking about immune booster juices, there's one that has just
two ingredients. It's super super It's a cup of orange
juice freshly squeezed if you've got it, or juice not
(08:39):
from concentrate, and a little bit of powdered turmeric or turmeric.
And the third ingredient I said two, but if you've
got some ginger, it's really good too. So orange juice, turmeric,
and ginger. I mean, what do you think that does
for you?
Speaker 1 (08:54):
What does like?
Speaker 2 (08:56):
Wow, that tastes good. Now, see that's a little bit
stronger because ginger is sort of sweetheart and to America
is that spice the rhizome that gives a bright yellow flavor.
I'm sorry, bright yellow color and the flavor isn't so pronounced,
I would say, But basically you're going to have some
(09:16):
really good anti inflammatory qualities and soothing throat qualities in there.
Orange juice has lots of vitamin C, so really good.
And then the ginger, the ginger root is really good
for your tummy too. So I imagine with all you've had
going on, your tummy was a little upset as well,
wasn't it.
Speaker 1 (09:34):
Oh yeah, absolutely, ye.
Speaker 2 (09:36):
See, so ginger is really good for your tummy.
Speaker 1 (09:38):
So actually actually lost a few was upset a little bit.
I lost a few pounds.
Speaker 2 (09:43):
Oh did you? Yeah, Well, I guess it's that a bonus.
Speaker 1 (09:47):
I know I didn't. I didn't want to get sick.
They have to lose weight, but you know, it did work.
So there.
Speaker 2 (09:52):
You know, I hope you kept yourself hydrated, that is, so,
you know.
Speaker 1 (09:57):
I do. And as a matter of fact, I'm a
big zero Gatorade person, and you know I will, I will,
I will drink. I drink a lot of I'm not
a big water drinker, but I do drink a lot
of that, And so I, yes, I do try to
stay hydrated as much as I think I can, because
I know that's You've taught me that over the years,
and you know, you got to stay hydrated when you're
(10:17):
sick like that. But yeah, I did, but but it
still didn't help the cough.
Speaker 2 (10:21):
No, that cough what you had ling lingers on and
you just have to, you know, let your body get
rid of it naturally. But those good potions or home
remedies really work and then you don't have to go
to the store. There's nothing artificial in them, and they're
good for you. They give you energy and again keep
you hydrated. And by the way, too, Mark, when you
(10:43):
think of that, it's that that yellow rhizome. If you've
got brain fag going on, that helps with it too.
And I think when you're sick and you know, coughing
and everything's topsy turvy in your body, you get a
little brain fall. So you know, they do double duties.
All those herbs and spices.
Speaker 1 (11:02):
I needed that because I felt like I was out
in left field, up against the wall.
Speaker 2 (11:06):
Yeah. Well, again staying hydrated. And by the way, you
said that zero gatorade not few years ago, wow, a
while ago. I wrote a sports nutrition book with some
colleagues and we had gatorade, like a homemade gatorade in there.
But mister Hikenfeld was not drinking enough water lately, and
(11:29):
so my neighbor brought down a bottle of zero sugar Gatorade,
and he loved it. He never liked those kinds of things,
so I was really surprised it really did hydrating two
and a little bit of electrolytes. So good stuff, good stuff.
Speaker 1 (11:45):
Nodall. Let's take a quick break. We come back more

Got a great class coming up for you. It's called
Good Vibes by Burnhams for the Cincinnati Region by Burnhams
are true workhorse shrubs, I'm telling you, and there are
so many great ones available, but learn more about them.
As presented by Jack Schaeffer from the Cincinnati Botanical Gardener Zoo.
It's at the Boone County Library, the Heaven Branch, January
twenty third, six to seven, absolutely free welcome back. You're
(14:42):
in the garden with Ron Wilson, rita hiking fellows with
us this morning. Are you urbally experienced? We're talking about
the lingering cough everybody has right now, the sore throats
and all that little home remedies that you can come
up with make yourself from things that you probably have
on hand at your own home, including our next one,
which is a simple ginger and cinnamon tea.
Speaker 2 (15:04):
Oh yeah, that that is so good, so so good.
And basically it's ginger tea to which you add cinnamon.
And as far as how to make ginger tea, I
think I think you can even well, you could buy
powdered ginger, but I usually use the fresh ginger roots.
And so what I'll do is I'll basically smash the
(15:27):
ginger in some water and cook it a little bit
and then strain that out, and then you've got the
flavor and all the good health properties. And I'll add
some cinnamon to that. And you know, cinnamon, we always
think of that, you know, when you think of it
as a holiday spice full of antioxidants too, and it's
(15:47):
just got such a wonderful flavor and aroma, and I
think when you smell cinnamon, it just makes you feel good. Yeah,
So anyway, cinnamon also helps, uh might help lower blood
sugar levels too. So basically it's ginger root and cinnamon
and water and if you want to sweeten it, you
(16:08):
could certainly do some honey if you want. But these remedies,
mister Wilson, are so so simple. And when we were
talking about turmeric earlier and talking about the flavor, it
just dawned on me. When I do the raw turmeric,
and it looks like ginger root a little bit. It
looks like it's sort of like a wrinkled carrot actually,
(16:29):
and it tastes a little bit like a carrot. Have
you ever had raw turmeric?
Speaker 1 (16:33):
I have not. Well, I'll have to give talks with you,
but I don't think I've ever tasted that.
Speaker 2 (16:40):
No. And you know, you can grow turmeric just like
ginger root too, and a little bit of soil and
then you'll have turmeric. But it's just a wonderful spice
used a lot in Asian cooking and in curage, and
that's what gives it that wonderful, beautiful color. But it's
just huge as far as good health qualities, anti inflammatory qualities.
(17:04):
It's good for your joints and just wonderful. So I
always encourage people try a little bit of turmeric, and
I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
Speaker 1 (17:13):
Do you even have that golden milk with ginger and
tumoric or tur turmeric?
Speaker 2 (17:18):
Yeah? Okay, yeah, turmeric or turmeric?
Speaker 1 (17:23):
Okay, got it? And you know, using both of those.
I always thought, you know, I was surprised when I
saw the milk in there, because you know, I always
saw when you had like a respiratory thing, you didn't
drink dairy.
Speaker 2 (17:34):
Yeah. Well, it's funny because a lot of people think
it creates mucaus. It's interesting that you would say that,
So you could certainly do non dairy. You know what
a lot of people do with this recipe? And then
I'll go over it in a minute. Instead of using
regular cows milk, they'll use coconut milk and coconut milk.
(17:55):
I think it smells more aromatic than it tastes like coconut.
But it's a really a wonderfully healthy alternative, and it's
got minerals and vitamins, and it's really good for you,
and I think easier to digest too, So you want
me to go over the recipe on that.
Speaker 1 (18:12):
Yeah, we got a couple. We got about a mint
and a half.
Speaker 2 (18:14):
Okay, So basically what you're gonna do. You're gonna take
a couple cups of milk dairy and if you want
a non dairy equivalent, it's okay, and some ginger roots,
some turmeric, and some peppercorns in a sauce pan. You're
just going to simmer that covered about ten minutes and
then strain and sweeten. Sometimes I'll add some cinnamon. But
(18:35):
the reason you want to put those ingredients in we
talked about the turmeric and honey and ginger. Pepper actually
helps absorb all the good things that tumeric gives you
so and it also gives the milk a little bit
of a spicy case that black peppercorn, So those are
really good for you. People think something like pepper isn't,
(18:56):
but it's pretty much full of antioxidants. So freshly ground
pepper is always good. So if you go to a
latte bar and ask for that, you're gonna pay a
pretty penny. But you can make it at home last
several days in the fridge too, and it's so good
and beautiful to look at.
Speaker 1 (19:13):
And of course, mister Hikenfeld, I'm sure drinks this and
that's why you have such a great voice in the shower.
Speaker 2 (19:19):
You know what, the man will do the ginger tea,
a little bit, the honey cough syrup. I cannot get
him to drink that gold and milk with the ginger
and toomeric for anything. But you know, he's an old warhorse,
so I can't complain. He's probably healthier than all of
us put together, you know what.
Speaker 1 (19:37):
And he does have that great singing voice. And I'm
sure you know.
Speaker 2 (19:42):
Yes, And he's lying in deep state right now.
Speaker 1 (19:45):
If and Susie gets up, I know you'll have that
hearty breakfast all ready for him to enjoy. This morning, Rita,
hiking felt always a pleasure. Great recipes. These are all
