Speaker 1 (00:03):
Crazy Machevy do the litty so good afternoon, and welcome
to the car show on fifty five KRC. I'm Dae
Donovan taking your car questions. The number to call five

(00:24):
one three seven four nine fifty five hundred. That number again,
five one three seven four nine fifty five hundred. I
you know, I guess I've never really paid attention, but
that that that song American Pie. I'm sorry if I
hurt or offend you, but that is my least favorite
song of all time. I don't know why. I just

(00:45):
do not like that song. So Danny, we got can
we cut that out maybe and like put another like
upbeat song. We maybe change that up. But uh but hey,
uh it's a uh no, I shouldn't say gorgeous Saturday.
It's a typical mid January Saturday here in Cincinnati. But again,

(01:06):
I'm here every Saturday to take your car questions most Saturdays,
majority Saturdays, and love to hear from you. Again. The
number to call five one three seven four nine fifty
five hundred. That number again, five one three seven four
fifty five hundred, and again the questions can be we
can try to get as technical as you'd like. The

(01:29):
problem with these cars nowadays is it's you know, you're
you're pulling up schematics and you're pulling up wiring diagrams
and and they can get pretty technical, right, But it
can be as simple as hey, Dane, I have this
car this year, this make this model, whatever what do
you think about maintenance wise? Right? It can be as simple.

(01:50):
You know, there's no question on this show that you
you should ever be like, Oh, I'm not gonna ask it.
I'm not gonna bother them. That's that's what this show
is about. This show's about talking about your vehicle and
gaining knowledge and figuring out what how to prolong the
life of your vehicle. Right. So, uh, speaking of which,

(02:13):
what I want to focus on today and the topic
that I want to talk about is and and I
was on the phone with a friend of mine who's
looking at purchase a vehicle. Okay, and this is something
that most of you who listen to me on this show.
I always talk about changing your oil. It's it is

(02:34):
a oh man, I can go. I can spend hours
talking about this. But the other thing that and something
that I'm passionate about is talking about when you're purchasing
a used vehicle. Okay, and this gentleman again as a
friend of mine looking at purchase vehicle, drove an hour
and a half to go look at this, this, this

(02:56):
truck and uh, you know there you have to in
today's world, with the cost of cars in vehicles, you
have to do your due diligence. You have to do
your homework. Okay. We have so many tools that you know,

(03:17):
that we have access to in order to do research
as far as where that car came from, who worked
on that car, what work was done to that car.
You know, you know twenty years ago, you didn't We
didn't have that, We didn't have those tools, we didn't
have anything like that in order to we didn't know
anything about it. Now, twenty years ago the car industry
was a lot different. Today, it is absolutely imperative and

(03:42):
important that you make sure that you do all of
your homework on your vehicle. It's not something that you know.
I understand that it's always exciting to go out and
buy a new car or a used vehicle. And again
this goes to a new car too, right. I explain
to my body that even a new vehicle, I have

(04:02):
a new vehicle. First one, I bought of my entire life.
At forty years old, I bought a new vehicle and
at seventeen thousand miles, I had to check engine light
on it, right, So it happens, right, But when you're
buying used, it's so important that you get these cars inspected. Now.

(04:22):
And he drove and he did his homework. He looked
at everything. And again you know, of course online they're
going to take pictures of the inside and the outside, right,
But it's a whole another story. When you get this car,
these vehicles on a lift and up in the air.
I can tell you without a doubt, almost with ninety

(04:43):
nine percent accuracy that I can tell you if that
car came from Canada, New York, Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh, Maine, something
like that. I can tell you that because there's gonna
be more rust on that thing, tremendous amount of rust
on these things. And you know when you need to
make sure that you protect and I know that it's

(05:05):
it's a depreciating asset, right, but it's an investment, right,
you're spending thirty forty fifty you know again, I talked
about it last week. You know the average price of
a vehicle today, it's the highest ever been ever in
the history of our country. The average price of a
vehicle is fifty thousand dollars. That's a lot of money.

(05:26):
And whether you're buying a brand new vehicle or you're
buying a used vehicle fifty thousand dollars, you want to
make sure that you get the most and best life
out of that vehicle. Right. You got to make sure
that you get your wife to work, or your kids
to work or school. Not work yet. My son he's
actually in studio with me. I'm gonna put him to

(05:47):
work here soon too. But you know, you want to
make sure you get the kids to school. You know,
it is a it is a device that you need
in order to you know, get to work, make money,
you know. So you want to make sure that if
you're spending that type of money, that you're not buying
somebody else's problems. And again, we have these tools. Carfax

(06:07):
great tool. Right, you've got the dealership and you can
track Carfax is great. We use it. Everything that we
do goes back to Carfax. It's a great tool to use.
And I would ask everybody when you're purchasing a vehicle,
make sure you get that Carfax reports. Most dealerships will
grant you access to that print out the car FAXX

(06:29):
and you can read it all. Now, I'm not necessarily
too concerned about oh I had a fender beend, or
the bumper was replaced, or it had a minor damage,
it had a dent, or the door was painted. Okay,
that's fine. But the more important thing is is you
need to focus on where the car came from. And again,
the farther north that that vehicle came from the worse

(06:52):
you're gonna be. Okay, it's just unfortunately, with the brine
and the and the rust and the salt and everything
like that, it creates and reaks havoc on your vehicle.
Now this again, a buddy of mine. He's looking at
this truck. Not only did it have a tremendous amount
of rust and it's only four years old, but then

(07:14):
they tried to mask the rust by painting it, and
you could clearly see that they did that. And what
they do is it just obviously that's how they when
they when they buy these things in auction or whatnot,
they just try to push them through paint it look. Oh,
it looks great, and most people would just go, oh yeah,
everything looks great. But this gentleman sent me the photos.

(07:36):
I looked at them and I could you could already
see the rust had bubbled up, and then they dispray
painted it. Well. The other problem is is now you've
discapsulated it, right, so the salt and the water get
in there and it can't breathe. They can't, you know,
so it just rusts quicker. And you know, I understand
that pretty much anywhere in this country, you're you're not

(07:57):
gonna get away from it, but yourself limit that risk. Right,
So when you're again, when you're looking at purchasing one
of these vehicles, you get that Carfax report and you
find out where that car came from, You find out
the history that is almost on every single car. If

(08:18):
they don't have a Carfax report on a vehicle, then
you run. Okay. You got to make sure that when
you're going out and you're buying these vehicles and spending
thirty forty fifty eighty thousand dollars, you want to make
sure that you're not buying somebody else's problems. And it's rampant.
I see it every single day, and it's so important

(08:41):
that you get these things inspected. Now we do it
at Donovan's. It's called a used car inspection. You bring
it in, you know, we get it inspected. We check
everything bumper to bumper, right, and it two things. One,
we potentially protect you from buying a Russ bucket and

(09:01):
having more problems. Number two, if we do find problems
with them, maybe it needs tires, maybe it needs breaks,
maybe it has a bad suspension part. We're gonna look
at that. We're gonna give you a list of the
repairs that it needs, and then you can take it
back to the dealer. Gives you the leverage, the upper hands. Say, hey, listen,
you want fifty thousand dollars for this vehicle, but unfortunately

(09:22):
it needs four tires, four breaks, and a bearing and
it's gonna cost me twenty five hundred dollars to fix this.
So can you make these repairs or can you take
it off the price of the car gives you the
upper hand, Right, nobody wants to spend fifty thousand dollars
on a car and turn around two weeks later the
breaks are grinding and you're bringing it to me and

(09:43):
I'm like, hey, this thing needs twenty five hundred dollars
worth work. Right then you know, your stomach just sinks
and you're like, man, I just spent fifty thousand dollars
on this vehicle, and now I got to put twenty
five dollars app you know, twenty five hundred dollars into it,
or whatever whatever the cost may be. You know, it's
something that would really really, you know, you don't want

(10:05):
Nobody wants to buy a new or used vehicle and
their stomach just sinks after weeks of you know, having it.
You know, you've got this high of like great, you
know I got this new car or this new lightly
used car, and then you bring it to me and
I just ruined your you know, I just rained on
your parate. I hate doing that, but you know, unfortunately,

(10:27):
that's that's the profession. It's something that you just it's
my responsibility to tell you and give you my honest
opinion on what to do and what it's going to
cost to make sure that the car is fixed and
keep it keep you and your loved ones and your
family safe and on the road. And uh so it's
absolutely so important going in twenty twenty six, if you're

(10:52):
buying a vehicle used vehicle, please please get it in
inpe it now. In this particular case, again, this gentleman
was an hour and a half away, not practical that
he could drive it all the way back to Cincinnati.
I inspect it and go him drive it all the
way back. Right. So in that case, you find a

(11:14):
reputable if there's a vehicle that you absolutely have to have,
you want it. Everything looks good, I still would recommend
that you get it inspected. And and if you're not,
if it's out of town, okay, you find a reputable
shop and you get a second opinion and just say, hey, listen,

(11:34):
can you inspect this vehicle and make sure that it's
a good vehicle because all he all this gentleman did
was send me photos and I'm like, there's too much
rust on that thing. I wouldn't buy it. If it
was me, I wouldn't buy it. And you know, it's
it's it's important. And and there's so many people that

(11:55):
come to us and say, hey, do you do any
type of vehicle inspection before Absolutely anybody that listens to
this show and anybody, they possibly can tell you if
you're buying a used vehicle, it is absolutely worth every
dime that you get it inspected, whether it has a
great clean car facts or not. So I got a
great story for you. I'm taking your phone calls and

(12:18):
I'm gonna call five one three seven four nine fifty
five hundred. That number. Get five to one three seven
four nine fifty five hundred. Stay tuned. I've got it.
I've got a great example of even if it has
a clean Carfax report, why you need to get it
still need to get it inspected. So coming up, we
have OPI. You're listening to the car show on fifty
five KRC, the talk station.

Speaker 2 (12:37):
This is fifty five KARC and iHeartRadio station.

Speaker 1 (12:41):

And with new cars becoming more expensive than ever, smart
maintenance for your current vehicle just makes sense.

Speaker 4 (13:14):
The place for Brian Thomas in the morning. Fifty five
KRC the talk station.

Speaker 1 (13:21):
Taking your car questions. The number to call five one
three seven four nine fifty five one hundred and five
one three seven four nine fifty five one hundred. Real quick.
As I stated in the first day, first segment, we
have OPI coming up, but real quick story. As I
had stated that you know you want to get it inspected, right.

(13:42):
So I had a vehicle. It was a Lexus. It
was a pre owned certified Lexus. I think it had
like I won. It was low. It was like thirteen
twenty thousand miles right, and great customer still is a
great customer. She brought it in and then I was like, man,
it's it's pre uncertified. And she's like, I'm gonna have
my mechanic look at it. So and this is that

(14:04):
at the time, I was still in the back. I
was still working. So anyways, in the back, I'm always working.
My guys always say I don't, but I do. But
I had it and I looked at it, checked it
all over, and it had massive amount of front end
front and she's front and damage and I'm like, so

(14:27):
I told her about it and here to come. You know.
Of course Carfax shows no accident, right, but the dealership
had wrecked this vehicle at some point. Somebody wrecked it.
Did I think, I want to say, twenty thirty thousand
dollars damage to the front end of this vehicle. But

(14:49):
they were selling it. It's pretty uncertified, and it wasn't
on Carfax. It wasn't on the Carfax report because the
dealership wrecked it and the dealership fixed it, right. So
she took it back and I'm like, hey, this is
has been wrecked. I you know, I don't think you
should buy it. Takes it back and they they actually
admitted to it, like, oh yeah, it has been wrecked.
We're gonna take it off as pre uncertified, you know.

(15:11):
So I mean, even if it's pre uncertified, and even
if it's not on the car fact you know, if
I you know, if you wreck your vehicle and you
got you know, you got a good buddy of yours
that has a body shop and he fixes it and
you pay him cash or underneath, it's not gonna be
in the carfax report, so you still have Just because
it doesn't say it on the carfax report doesn't mean
you still don't get it. You know, you still need

(15:34):
to get it inspected, you know, So you know when
I say I mentioned CARFAXX. But at the same time,
you still need to have it inspected because you never know.
If you know, Bob the back door mechanic decided that
he was going to slap a new bumper on and
have it painted and do a horrible job at it.
You don't want that. So it's still important that you

(15:56):
get inspected by a technician, a certified technical and make
sure that you protect the money that you're about to
spend on a vehicle. So that it's important. So all
right again, taking your phone calls and I recall five one,
three fifty five hundred. Let's go to the phones we
have Opie. Hey, oh, welcome to the car show. How
can I help?

Speaker 5 (16:17):
I don't uh that story right? There is proof there
are three kinds of people you don't trust. Lawyers, politicians,
and car salesmen.

Speaker 1 (16:26):
Yeah well yeah, I mean, and.

Speaker 5 (16:28):
You just thought you was talking, you was talking about
the rust and that pre owned thing. I went and left,
I went to a one of the major conglomerates in
the Cincinnati metro area and looked at two at one fifties.
I had good miles on the price is right, and
crawled up underneath of them while the guy was trying
to show me all the cup folders in the heated

(16:49):
seats and all that crap I don't care about, right,
And both of them the frame was rusted completely out
from the gas tank.

Speaker 3 (16:57):
All the way to trailer hitch mm hmm, yep.

Speaker 5 (17:01):
And he's you know, And the thing is, you walk
up to him, and they looked. The bodies were good,
but underneath, man, they were rusted all to pieces. So
just because it said a rep you little dealership, crawl
underneath up it with a flashlight. And if I go
to it, if I go to a car lot, if
they won't let me put it up on the rack,

(17:22):
I won't even.

Speaker 1 (17:23):
Look at it. I have run. Yeah, I get right
back in your vehicle and just go on. Then that's
the thing, you know.

Speaker 5 (17:36):
And well they told me, they told me they had them,
both of them on the rack.

Speaker 3 (17:39):
One was No.

Speaker 5 (17:40):
Six, one was No. Eight, And I believe not it
was rusted worse than the six they told me they
had an erect. I said, they know, way you had
this thing on the rack because lyft points right in
front of the spring shackle or the front spring hangar,
and if you'd have put the rat foot on there,
he would have gone right through the frame. This thing
he had never been it ain't never been up in
the air. And so I just I just turned around

(18:02):
to run from that. But another one here. I know
you're I know you're a great big fan of the
aftermarket warranty, and I know you're a great big fan
of Chevrolet equinoxes.

Speaker 1 (18:13):
Too, right, Oh yeah, yeah.

Speaker 5 (18:16):
Okay, Well, my mom bought a Chevy Equinox warranty. Well,
I told her not to buy the car, and I
told her not to buy the warranty. And my daughter
told her the same thing. She's a mechanic, and well
then motor let go here while back. So she's fighting
with the with the warranty company, and of course they

(18:37):
got to tear the The warranty company has the place
tear them engine, pow the engine out, tear it and tear.

Speaker 1 (18:43):
It down to prove what failed. Correct.

Speaker 5 (18:46):
Then then then on top of this, then they wanted
her oil change records yep. And my mom is she's religious.
She changes the oil every three thousand miles if it
gets if it's if it's three and ten miles, starts panicking.
But the other on on the other thing is she
only drives like ten miles a week. I mean, I'm

(19:09):
being facetious here, but the thing with Burnert coral oil
every week, so you stop and check the gas and
fill it up with oil on Friday. And well, my uncle,
my uncle did the PCV valve in it, and that
kind of curbed the the oil consumption problem, but it
was they got it down to a half. The court, well, mother,
lets go. Well, then the warranty company there, she's fighting

(19:32):
back and forth with them, and my mom's real passive
and I'm like, now you just call them up and
say this is what's going to happen and make it happen.
And well, long story short, I ended up calling my
brother in law's brother in law who was an attorney.
They called the warrant. He got a hold of warranty,
caught me and threatened to take him the court. And
so what they did, instead of fixing her truck, which

(19:54):
it was completely everything was covered according to all the
fine print they had up refunded. They refunded her money
for what she paid for the warranty. Now she's still
on the hook to get this thing put back together.

Speaker 3 (20:07):
Ye.

Speaker 5 (20:08):
So first of all, listening to your issue, you got
a brother in law with a brother in law that
is in an attorney.

Speaker 1 (20:15):
That that always helps, doesn't it. It always figured.

Speaker 5 (20:21):
I passed that one because I know your two favorite
things is after market warranties. And she give me equinoxes.

Speaker 1 (20:30):
There, yeah they are yeah, And Kia is kias and
Hyundai's man, those things just absolutely just drink oil. It's
like I'll buy a key.

Speaker 5 (20:41):
And a new motor. I just bought me a brand
new used four Ford Ranger. There you go, and it's
got h.

Speaker 1 (20:55):
What size engine? Four oh? Four oh oh, those were things.
Those things were great.

Speaker 5 (21:04):
Four oh And I didn't realize it was overhead cam
until like a week after I bought it.

Speaker 3 (21:08):
I just did a four oh. I thought it in
the dark.

Speaker 5 (21:12):
I needed the truck so and it it's got two
hundred seventy five thousand miles on it. We got a
it's got a gas promotor and transmission that there's got
eighty thousand miles on it and it and I changed
my old three thousand miles regardless, and it does not

(21:32):
use a drop of oil between changes. I'm I'm on
a second oil change since i've had it. I've changed
you old twice since I've had it.

Speaker 1 (21:40):
Yeah, I mean they're they're uh, you know, that's the thing.
And you know, you know I talk about that all
the time. And you know those those vehicles back in
those days never burned oil. And you know, I'm even
you know, as I stated at the beginning of the show,
you know I have a new vehicle, I still check
it just to make sure and you know, knock on wood,
it's not. But some of these cars, I mean, my

(22:03):
my office manager that that works for us, you know,
her son's car has thirty thousand miles and she goes, hey,
it's making this ticking noise and I'm like, have him
check the oil. It sounds like it's knocking thirty thousand miles.
Can you imagine buying a new When he bought it, it
was only one year old, you know, And I told
you the story.

Speaker 3 (22:20):
I told you the story up.

Speaker 5 (22:22):
But the guy I worked with the certified pre owned
suber is it locked up because it didn't have no
oul in it, you know, and they wouldn't.

Speaker 3 (22:29):
Change the oil.

Speaker 1 (22:32):
Yeah, I know, I know, I.

Speaker 3 (22:34):
Checked, I checked money.

Speaker 5 (22:35):
I'm off one Friday. So on Friday morning before I leave,
while the truck's been sitting there overnight Friday morning, I
open the hood up and I checked the oil cold,
and I check it every Friday morning. And I and
this thing, it.

Speaker 3 (22:48):
Don't use it.

Speaker 5 (22:49):
It don't use it. Drop the oil. And one other tip,
it's wintertime. You guys out there with four world drive trucks,
go spend twenty five dollars and get you a toast
wrap and keep it behind the seat. And so when
you see that soccer mom in the mini van with
three kids in it, that slid off in the ditch,
and you got a strap and you can pull her out,

(23:09):
and see, ain't got to wait till Wednesday for Triple
A to come and pull her out. Every side which
you can make, you can make a few bucks yank
and idiots out of the ditch. My favorite are guys
in port. My favorite is my favorite of the guys
in the Porsche Cayennes with y'all wheel drive and they've
still got the summer tires on them. Yep, I pull

(23:30):
pulled one guy out twice. This last note we had.
I made one hundred and fifty bucks off to him.
That twenty five dollars Coastrap is the best investment I
ever made.

Speaker 1 (23:40):
Yes, it is. You've definitely made your money back tenfold.
So all right, well, I appreciate the phone call. You
have a great weekend, buddy.

Speaker 5 (23:48):

Welcome back. Taking your car questions. The number to call
five one three seven four nine fifty five hundred. That
number again, five one three seven four nine fifty five hundred.
Wind chills at zero. Uh. My youngest son does this
all the time. My youngest son, Declan will go ooh
that's cold. Uh yeah, zero wind chills. Uh yeah, that's coold.
So but again, taking your car questions real quick. You know,

(25:05):
Opie made a great point, and I just wanted to
I want to get to Andy here shortly just a minute.
You know. Yes, I do not like the Equinox. Uh
not a not a huge fan of these smaller vehicles
that are turbo charged and chained and everything like that.
And you know, when I started doing this show, I

(25:29):
really I really did like Kia and Hyundai as a brand.
I really did. I have since changed my opinion because
I've seen too many of these come in left and right.
I mean I want to say what probably about a year,
maybe a year ago, two years ago, I had a
Kia and it was not me personally. Had a customer

(25:51):
with a Kia and you know, needing an engine, and
Kia is covering it. I mean, they're doing the right thing,
right because it's a ten year, one hundred thousand mile
warranty and they're doing the right thing. And there is
a class action lawsuit and there is a recall, and
they are replacing these engines. But this particular gentleman, he's like, hey,
you know, hey, I called the dealer. Yeah it's covered.

(26:11):
I'm great, and he goes, but I'm number one hundred
on the list. There's ninety nine cars in front of me.
They're telling me it's going to be months and months
before I get an engine. So that should tell you
that there's a massive problem. And you know, and again
ten years ago, Kia was great, Hyundai Kia, they were

(26:33):
rock solid. But these these newer ones today, man, they
just absolutely drink oil. And you know, again, everybody's like,
well I don't see it. I don't see any smoke
and you don't and and what does everybody tell you?
I change it once a year I change it every
ten thousand. I'll change it every you know, BMW recommends

(26:55):
once a year is absurd, absurd. You know, I have
a a I want to say. It's a seventeen twenty
and seventeen aut e Q seven at my shop to seventeen.
It's a little older, less than one hundred thousand miles
needs an engine, you know, and you know I've it's

(27:19):
ten thousand dollars to fix it. And when we called
them and they're like, oh, we'll just junk it, I'm like, well, okay,
we'll go ahead and bring us the title. Well we
still owe twenty thousand dollars on it. I'm like, you know,
I felt so bad. You know, they are they're either
forced to spend ten thousand dollars to get their car

(27:40):
running again, or they junk it and spend twenty thousand
dollars to you know, to junk it and send me
the title. You know, I never ever want to see
anybody do that, you know. And there's always this mass community,
this mass confusion to when you should be changing your oil.

(28:01):
And I'm telling you, with these newer cars, it's so
important that you do it. Just like Obi said, he
every Friday, he checks his oil. If you have one
of these cars, you'r Audi, your BMW, your Hyundai, your Kia,
you're Chevy, you need to be checking your oil once
once a month until you get a grasp on the

(28:23):
amount of oil that it's using. Now again, at Donovan's,
you can bring your car to me. O't check your
oil for free. Doesn't cost you anything. If you're like, hey, Dane,
I don't know how to check my oil, that's fine.
And some cars don't even have dipsticks anymore. Sometimes you
have to go through the computer in order to check it,
you know. And same as you know air pressure. I

(28:45):
see so many people that are paying you know, dollars
seventy five. I mean, every single time I pass a
gas station that has an air pump, there's somebody that
are using it because their tires love right. Two things, One,
you can go out and buy a pump on Amazon
for you know, pretty cheap. If you've got a low tire,
but the tires don't lose they're not supposed to lose air.

(29:08):
If your tire is losing air, it's because it has
either a nail, a screw, a hole, the valves leaking
the rims leaking. Those tires are not supposed to lose air.
I mean, I've had I have cars that are I've
got one that's been at my shop for shouldn't be there,
but it's been there eight months, all the air had
all the air and the tires are still in there. Right.

(29:29):
So if you're putting air in your tire once a week,
once a month, it has a hole and it can
and it can be repaired and it can be fixed. Okay,
So it's you gotta just you have to be aware
of your vehicle nowadays because they just they just don't
last as they they They're just not what they used

(29:52):
to be. And I'm here to try to help you out,
to save you from wasting thousands and thousands of dots
because somebody lied to you that they they told you
that you should. The salesman that sold you the car says, oh,
change it every ten thousand. That's wrong, it's dead wrong.
And I've never had anybody call me here and prove

(30:14):
me wrong. Can a car go ten thousand miles on
an oil change? Yes? Will a car go ten thousand miles?
Will the most? Will most or majority of vehicles make
it ten thousand miles on an old change. No, why
because there's no oil in it. So I'm here to

(30:35):
tell you you know, yes, cars can go ten thousand miles,
but they're all of these vehicles the way they're designed
due to you know, the if the government standards as
far as fuel efficiency goes is they burn oil, and
they put the oil viscosity just gets thinner and thinner

(30:56):
and thinner. These new toytos are zero W eight. When
I got an in this industry, it was fifteen forty
for a diesel and ten W thirty for a car.
Now we have zero twenty zero sixteen five twenty five
thirty now zero. I mean I have to stock, you know,

(31:16):
so much oil because every single car calls for a
different grade. But the oil just gets thinner and there,
I mean, it's literally water. And then you sit there
and you go, I wonder why it's it's using oil
because it's going right past the rings and it's burning
it up. And then guess what. The vehicle that you
bought in three years has got a blown engine. And
guess what you gotta do. You gotta go out buy

(31:37):
a new one. But you got to spend twenty thousand
dollars in order to junk it so you can go
buy a new one. I don't want to see anybody
do that. You know, so it and it's something that
anybody can do it again. If you're in the Tri
State area and you if you don't know how to,
I mean, you know, we there are resources out there.

(31:57):
You can go to Google, you can go to YouTube,
they'll show you right. Or you can bring it to
if you're locally, you can bring it to a Donovan
tire just go, hey, my oil lights on. Most cars
don't have the oil light and everybody has this this
understanding that oh, if my car's low on oil, the
low oil light will come on. Now they don't. I

(32:17):
can tell you that I have cars that come in
that have zero oil in them. Half a court the
system holds five quarts of oil. It has half a
quart of oil in it, no oil light. Customer brings
it in because the check engine lights on, and it's
running bad. It's running bad because it doesn't have any
oil in it. Check engine lights on because it doesn't
have any oil in it. The oil lights don't come on.

(32:42):
And you know the reason being is, you know, it's
much it's better for you to blow your car up
so you go out buy a new one. I don't
want to see you do that. It's it's so important
that you just check it and again you can bring
it to any of your repair shops and just say, hey,
can check my oil if it needs a little bit oil.
Paying for it's the cheapest and best thing that you

(33:03):
can do to prolong the life for your car. Otherwise
it's gonna be You're gonna it's gonna be so much
more money. It's you know, it's just it's so important.
So and do not buy an aftermarket warranty ever. Opie
made it at a great point. Do not ever buy
an aftermarket warranty if you want to be if you
want to buy a extended factory warranty, I'm okay with

(33:28):
that because it's still with whatever manufacturer, Forward, Honda, Hyunda, whatever.
Do not ever buy an after market warranty. You see,
when you sit down and you're watching TV, how many
times do you see an aftermarket warranty company advertising on
the on the on the TV. I mean, I I

(33:50):
can't tell I can't watch any show on TV without
seeing an aftermarket warranty company that should tell you something
same as when you sit down, how many how many
you know? And I won't I don't want to get
delve into it, to get into it too much. But
how many times you sit down and you see, uh,
you know you need this drug, you need this drug,
you need this drug. That usually is a red flag

(34:11):
that probably you know they're making a tremendous amount of
money by selling product that you know you don't need
in my opinion, and you don't need an aftermarket warranty.
They are a nightmare. And just like Opie said, his
mother in law or his mother bought one, can't fight it.
Got money back to for for purchasing it. But now

(34:33):
she still has a car that needs an engine. She
just wasted all that money, all those resources. Not to
mention the attorney's fees. I'm sure that wasn't free.

Speaker 3 (34:43):
You know.

Speaker 1 (34:44):
They there's a there's a story here, and it's just
it's lies. It's it is making sure that you just
check your oil, be aware of your vehicle and what's
going on with it. It doesn't cost a tremendous amount
of money. It really doesn't. I'm here to tell you
it's very inexpensive to upkeep your car. And then number

(35:05):
one thing the two number one, I'm sorry. The number
one and number two thing to do is make sure
that you're checking your oil and that it's full. And two,
when you buy a used vehicle, you get it inspected
by a professional, so you don't buy somebody else's problems
because it's expensive. Right, those are the two best things

(35:26):
that you could do to have a to have a
vehicle last you two hundred three hundred thousand miles. And
so all right, I'm off my soapbox, I'm off my rant.
So coming up, we have Andy. You're listening to the
car show on fifty five K see the talk station.
Way back in nineteen fifty eight, my grandfather opened Donovan's

(35:47):
Auto entire Center right here in Cincinnati. A lot has
changed since then, but our commitment to honest auto repair hasn't.
We believe in making sure your vehicle gets everything it
needs and nothing it doesn't because as a family owned
business with our name on the wall, integrity matters. From
nineteen fifty eight to today, Donovan's Auto entire Center is
still Cincinnati's honest choice for auto repair, and we're proud

(36:08):
to keep this city moving. Three area locations. Find yours
at donovantire dot com.

Speaker 2 (36:14):
This is fifty five KRC, an iHeartRadio station, taking.

Speaker 1 (36:22):
Your car questions. You're listening to the car show on
fifty five KRS you can talk station, and let's go
to the phones. We're gonna go right to the phones. Andy. Hey, Andy,
welcome to the car show. How can I help? Thank
you for holding no.

Speaker 3 (36:34):
Problem, Doctor Donovan. Good to talk to you.

Speaker 1 (36:37):
Yeah, so I had to get on my soapbox. You know,
sometimes I just get I get amped up in that
stuff because I just feel like, you know, people are
lied to and then I, you know, I have to
have these conversations with people, and I you know it,
it's part of the job. But man, I you know,
I hate ruin and you know, raining on people's parades,
and you know, I feel like I've got this platform.

(36:59):
I need to be out there and be a cheerleader
for everybody, like, hey, listen, don't make these mistakes because
I see it day in and day out. So but
I apologize. Go ahead, how can I help you.

Speaker 3 (37:10):
Let's see, I've got a twenty ten town in country.
It's got the three point eight liter HEMI and no
it's not a heavy Yeah, I figured you'd appreciate the joke. Anyways,
about four or five years ago had a coolant leak.
Local shop zero it in. That was the uh. I

(37:32):
think maybe a lower intake gasket I think is what
they swapped out. I couldn't be wrong, but anyways, they
just said, hey, while we're in there, do you want
us to swap out the thermostat. I'm like, yeah, if
you recommend it, that's fine. They swapped it out, put
it all back together. Soon after, there was pretty cold out,
like zero degrees. We're driving, and notice that the engine

(37:56):
would not warm up. So I called the mechanic and
he said, yeah, it must be the just a bad thermostat,
swapped it out. Did it again. Took a third time
he had that. He said, he just called Christler and
got a thermostat from them, and ever since then the
engine warms up like it's supposed to. But ever since then,

(38:19):
I've noticed that when it is cold, maybe less than
twenty degrees outside and we're driving, you know, the windows
naturally will start to frost up because it's so cold.
But we've noticed that the defrost is never completely can
get the frost off the windshield the side windows, and

(38:41):
I don't know if that's related. I've just never had
that with any of our other cars, not being able
to fully defrost the windows when it's cold out. So
I thought i'd called the good doctor.

Speaker 1 (38:51):
Absolutely, so let me ask you something. So the heat,
if it's blown out of the vents, you've got great heat, correct.

Speaker 3 (39:00):
We do, and I don't. I don't smell any cooling.
I don't smell any leaks, so I know what they
did work.

Speaker 1 (39:05):
But basically, when you turn on the defrost, it's not
it's not it's not getting rid of the the dew
on the or the you know, the frost on the
on the windows.

Speaker 3 (39:14):
Correct, that's right, Yeah, like the the condensation on the inside.
It'll do enough to look out the windshield, but it's
sometimes it gets it's a little dicey drive in it.

Speaker 1 (39:25):
Sure, all right, So let me ask you something. Do
you in the summer during the summer, did the air
conditioning work?

Speaker 3 (39:34):
It does work, although I know there must be a
leak because we'll have to get it recharged periodically, maybe
once a.

Speaker 1 (39:41):
Year, okay, all right.

Speaker 3 (39:43):
In fact, probably back in November, I had it recharged, okay,
just because I thought, well, maybe that's it. Maybe because
it doesn't have any you know, free audit it that
it's not actually defrosting. But that didn't seem to work either.

Speaker 1 (39:59):
Okay, so you know, typically, you know when you turn
on the on all vehicles, when you turn on the defrost,
the compressor will kick on because that dries out the air. Right,
So there is a possibility that even though you had
it done in November, it could be you know, the

(40:20):
problem is as cold as it is, they really can't.
The only thing they can do is hook it up
to a machine, find out, fill it up. And and
but if you're telling me the defrost is not working,
first and foremost, we need to find out if the
one the compressor's kicking on. So you can do that
at home, right, So you get in there, if you could,

(40:41):
you get in there, pop the hood, locate the compressor,
have your wife turn the defrost on. If you see
the compressor kick on, it's starting to move. Great, compressor's working.
Compress you know, it might be full of free on,
but the compressor is not working. Maybe the compressor is bad.
So we need to find out first if the compressors
kicking on, if it's kicking on, great, but still could

(41:01):
be low on free on. Even though you had it
done in November, it still could have leaked out. Does
it have rear air?

Speaker 3 (41:10):
Do you know, like, okay, do you remember over the
summer we had the rear air. I know one of
the parts went out we had, so I know they
probably recharge the system then on the rear air.

Speaker 1 (41:26):
All right, So so here's what here, here's the game plan.
If you can't friend, neighbor, wife, kids, whatever, start the car,
have turn the defrost off, and then you pop the hood.
You locate the compressure. You'll see it at the bottom
and the you ask them just to turn the defrost
on and see if that clutch activates. Just see if
it activates right, and you'll see it like you'll see

(41:48):
the belt move and all of a sudden, soon as
you hit it, the clutch turn, it turns on a magnet,
it comes together and boom it kicks. If that If
it's doing that, great, okay. Next is probably to see
if it's low on free on now they can even
though it's cold, they can. It may have leaked out
just enough to where it's not drying out that air

(42:09):
enough in order to to defrost it. So you know
they're and they're gonna tell you, hey, uh you know, Andy,
it's it's too cold out. You don't need to charge
your AC. I get that, but your defrost isn't working
right if they say, hey, Andy, it's full of free
on the other thing that you can do is just

(42:30):
make sure that you know, you get some wind decks
and you with a you know that has ammonia in it,
and you absolutely do your your best at cleaning those,
getting all the dirt, grime, the grease, getting that all
off there. Uh, that's gonna help as well. It still

(42:52):
continued to do it, but you know, far too often. Yeah,
we can see out of it. Uh, but you know,
kids touch it. They're breathing. My kids, they get my
car and my truck and you know, they're blowing on
the glass and they're writing their name, and you got
all that dirt in that grease, and that's gonna that's
gonna play a part too. So make sure the compressor's
kicking on, make sure it's full of free on. And

(43:13):
then do you know, there's there's other company, there's other
products out there, but make sure that that windshield all
those windows are are clean with ammonia, and get all
the dirt, grime and grease off of it. And then
if it still doesn't do it, I need you to
call me back because I don't know that those are
the pretty much the three things that you can do

(43:34):
in order to make sure the defrost works. Make sure
your kids aren't touching the glass. That's why I don't
let my all right, hey, thanks for the call. You
have a great weekend. Hey, listen, thank you so much
everybody for calling. I apologize to the other vehicle, other vehicles,
the other the other listeners. I couldn't I couldn't get to.
I do apologize. I will be out next week. Unfortunately

(43:57):
I'll be out of town, but the following week I'll
be back. Thank you so much, everybody, having a great weekend.
