Speaker 1 (00:00):
Let's talk Giants football. The New York Giants. Brought to
you by Curtis Lumber, your local full-service home center and lumberyard.
It's the New York Giants sitting in this room. And now,
from the New York Giants pre- and post-game show. The
New York Giants. It's John Schmelke. Good morning, gentlemen. John Schmelke, everybody.
Speaker 2 (00:21):
How are you, Johnny?
Speaker 1 (00:23):
How are you guys?
Speaker 2 (00:23):
What's going on? We hung up the phone with you
Monday morning, and after saying that, why would you trade
a draft pick... To get a quarterback of the same
caliber as the one you have, and the Giants did that.
What do you make of the move with J.J. McCarthy,
I guess I'm asking?
Speaker 1 (00:41):
I think they just, look, we talked about it. They
needed another quarterback in the room, right? They only had
Jay Kaner as the only other quarterback. They had two quarterbacks.
They need a third one. And as they scoured the market,
their determination was that he's a young player with upside,
even though right now I don't think he's an immediate upgrade,
given what we've seen. He's someone that you can develop,
(01:02):
and he adds to the room. He's mobile, so he
has some of Dart's skill set. It's only a fifth-round pick,
which is only a day-three pick, so it's not a
prohibitive cost by any means. And I think they just
thought this was the best possible option to fill out
the room.
Speaker 3 (01:16):
There's ever greatness somewhere in J.J.
Speaker 1 (01:18):
McCarthy. We've got to find it.
Speaker 2 (01:20):
But no, but see, I think if your plan isn't
short term, then you're inviting a quarterback controversy when you've
got two highly high drafted young quarterbacks in the same
room on the same team.
Speaker 1 (01:34):
Yeah, and John Harbaugh was asked that question. He goes, look,
he doesn't see it that way. A, you always like
to have competition in all the rooms. You want to
have strong rooms all around. But I think more importantly,
they believe in Jackson Dart. This is not a situation
where they think J.J. McCarthy is going to be competing
with Jackson Dart to be the starter next year. Dart
has shown so much more than he has as a
(01:56):
starter in the National Football League. I don't even think
that's close to being a conversation in the building.
Speaker 2 (02:01):
So, and one more thing on McCarthy. Is he healthy?
Is he practicing? And if he is, how does he look?
Speaker 1 (02:07):
No, he's fine. He's out there. He's working. Look, he's learning.
I mean, this is like drinking out of a fire hose.
He's never had a language like this before, so he's
trying to figure that out. We haven't spoken to him yet.
My guess is that he's going to talk to the
media today would be my guess. I don't even know
if he's going to be the backup this week. He's fine.
(02:29):
He's fine. They aren't sure he's even going to be
up to speed enough this week to be the backup,
so he might be the number three this week.
Speaker 2 (02:36):
Okay, all right.
Speaker 3 (02:37):
So do you want to talk Arizona?
Speaker 2 (02:39):
Yeah, yeah. Well, Arizona is 1-2. The Giants are 2-1.
The game's 1 o'clock on Sunday, pregame noon. You can
hear it all here on PIX 106. What kind of
team are the Arizona Cardinals, and is Marvin Harrison even playing?
Speaker 1 (02:53):
No, he's playing. He's their number two receiver. Really, if
you want to count Trey McBride, though, who's really their
number one target, their tight end, he's really kind of
their number three option in the passing game, and then
Michael Wilson's other receiver. He just hasn't really gone off
this year, and I think he's having some trouble separating.
I think that's been a problem with him. He's not
(03:13):
super explosive or twitchy. And he hasn't figured out a
way how to use his size to his full advantage
yet where you're kind of open without being open, if
you know what I mean. These guys that kind of
use their body and their ability to go up and
get the ball. But Arizona is a good offense. Like
they can score the ball. Jacoby Brissett's having a good year.
(03:34):
Their defense, though, is not very good. So I think
this has a chance to be a really nice bounce
back game for Jameis Winston. And it could be a
game that gets into the mid or upper 20s for
both teams.
Speaker 3 (03:44):
I'm reading about this Javon Holland earning Player of the
Month honors with you guys, Oregon kid.
Speaker 2 (03:51):
Defensive Player of the Month?
Speaker 1 (03:53):
Yeah, he's playing out of his mind. First Giants, only
Giants player in the last 30 years. to have four
takeaways in his first three games. Only one other NFL
player since the merger has had three interceptions, two forced fumbles,
and a fumble recovery in their first three games. He's
been a turnover machine. He's all over the field. He's
(04:14):
playing great football. They paid him as one of the
top safeties in the league two off-seasons ago. He had
a quiet year last year, but now he is looking
like the type of player that you would make that
type of investment in. He's been absolutely fantastic.
Speaker 3 (04:25):
Nice.
Speaker 2 (04:25):
I'm sensing some confidence going into this game from you,
and maybe that if Jameis is going to break out,
this is the defense to do it against.
Speaker 1 (04:34):
I think he has a chance. I think it's probably
a coin flip game, to be honest with you. I
think the Cardinals are actually favorites in the game.
Speaker 2 (04:42):
By a point and a half.
Speaker 1 (04:43):
The Cardinals almost, you know, yeah, I mean, look, they
were basically one score away from being close to the
Niners last week. And the Niners right now have been
one of the best teams in the league. So I
think it's going to be a challenging game. The Cardinals
run basically the same exact offense as the Rams. that
gave the Giants trouble on Monday night a couple weeks ago.
So we'll see if the Giants have made the required
(05:05):
adjustments to be better against the same offense, though a
much less talented team, than what the Rams were when
they lost to them on Monday night a couple weeks ago.
Speaker 3 (05:12):
Is the pressure off because we've accepted that it's okay
to win a game in a crappy loss, kind of
with a crappy game? We'll just win it any way
we can get it now.
Speaker 2 (05:22):
The score last week, I guess I didn't factor in
the Nor'easter. Is that part of it, or was Jameis
just not having it yet? Oh, no.
Speaker 1 (05:29):
I mean, the Nor'easter was 90% of it. I mean,
the weather was terrible. So I think that was a
huge part of it. And look, the way, I don't
know what the fan base is thinking, but to me,
if they have one soft stretch of schedule, this is it.
And if you want to try to be in the
mix over the course of the next couple of months
up until Thanksgiving, these are the type of games you've
(05:51):
got to win. So I think this is a hugely
important game. especially as the schedule gets tougher.
Speaker 3 (05:57):
You have the.
Speaker 1 (05:57):
Commanders next week, another winnable game. But then after that, guys,
you have the Saints who are good, the Texans that
are good, the Eagles that are good, the Seahawks that
are good. You've got a lot of really tough teams
coming out of the bye. So this, to me, is
a hugely important game at home. to win and give
yourself a little bit of cushion here at 3-1.
Speaker 2 (06:15):
Shmelb, we've got to wrap it up here, but I
know you signed a new linebacker this week, a veteran linebacker.
Do you have a production team meeting? Are we going
to just call him Jihad, or are we going to
go with the first name, Xavier? We just call him Jihad?
Speaker 1 (06:29):
Well, Jihad was here under Brian Dable the first two
years with Luke Martindale. So his nickname is Hottie, so
that's what most people call him, Hottie.
Speaker 2 (06:38):
Okay, because I know that he knows that that's a
controversial name. Anyway, okay, good. He's embracing it, clearly. John Schmelke,
Giants pre- and post-game show. You can hear him here
on Picks 106 Sunday at noon. Giants, Cardinals, have a
great game. We'll talk to you Monday.
Speaker 1 (06:52):
Thanks, Johnny. Thanks, guys. Appreciate it. Take it easy.
Speaker 3 (06:55):
John Schmelke, Picks 106.
