Yeah, I know, it was when we were prepping prepping
for the interview. I'm like, well, Jesus, is like one
Metallica reference in this whole thing. I mean, you moved on,
haven't you in.

A way always going to be a member of that band,
you know, brothers with that band. But I have this
project and this is yeah, moving forward. Buddy.

You formed the Chop House Band like thirty years ago,
but you're just touring for the first.

Time now, Right. We've always just done philanthropic events and
things like that for veterans and children's art programs and stuff,
and so now we're actually taking it out on the road.

And what's the sound If people don't know the chop
house band. What do you sound like?
Speaker 3 (01:01):
It's it's a meld of everything I've experienced, everything I've heard,
everything I've played. So it's kind of sometimes goes a
little bit crazy, blue grassy, and then sometimes it gets
heaviest I mean heaviest.
Speaker 4 (01:11):
Yes, yes, sir, I read outsider Americana love it.
Speaker 3 (01:17):
I don't know, but I like that term. I've been
trying to trying to get it across that Americana has
been a term for music since nineteen ninety four. Our
band has formed in nineteen ninety two. We've always played
the forms of music that make up that definition, but
I want to add American heavy metal music to the
definition of Americana because.

It is oh yeah, a lot of people cheering you
out there, of course.
Speaker 2 (01:39):
I mean when you when you say Americana in the
mid nineties, I think Uncle Tupelow and Sunlowe. What do
you what do you think, Jason news did?

I think it was very full cleaning in the early
years of its terminology of being defined, and then as
the we got twenty thirty years to form it and
have Americana Awards and all the other things. It's umbrella
has expanded and now I believe it includes heavy music
and everything else that always has included.

far as how what we're supposed to believe on your

All those things? For sure? You know, fifteen years elbow
to elbow, planes, trains, automobiles, fifty five countries doing what
we did. It's all pretty well documented. Okay, we got
I think it's really important for everybody to understand the
playing field that we were on, that we started on.
I was a very elated, holy crap happy kind of

person to be able to join my favorite band. They
were three of the status persons that ever existed at
that time. That combination is pretty volatile. We worked through
that for fifteen years and dominated the world and created
what is still dominating the world.

What is success? But how do you define success now?
Speaker 3 (03:19):
When people speak highly of you? When I go around
Right now, I'm in Nashville and I'm going around meeting people.
I'm doing press today with Charlie Starry because we're opening
for BlackBerry Smoke, And so everybody that I meet here
has a story that connects them to me, and all
of the stories are positive. They met me when they
were fifteen and to meet and greet. Their dad went
to a Metallica show and that was the first show

they took them to. All these kind of things. Everybody
has a connection to me. That's success.

Well, hell, I was in a high school play called
Fade to Black, based on the song Metallica is everywhere
my entire absolute life. I should ask this too. In
one after everything kind of you know, came to a head,

first wife broke up as well?

No, no, no, no. I was my very first marriage
was just a couple of months and it was in
nineteen eighty eight when I was twenty three years old.
Was okay, the girl I've been with now twenty five years.

New York man Nicole has gotten Jason Newstead through it all,
from the from the painkillers to the road cancers that
the whole nine got doing artwork and all kinds of
cool stuff.

That's a personal question. But do you sound different after
the cancer, Jason?

I think I'm singing better.

I spend a lot more time singing now as opposed
to growling and stuff. I still do have the you
if you need it. I still cool. I can still
get down there. But and I still and I still
will a couple of times when you guys see me
in Albany, I'm definitely going there. But the singing thing
and proper songs, hearing what I'm saying super important to me.

Now as I create my new originals and I have
stories to tell, I'm leaning into that more. But it
is a little different to answer your question, but I
do feel it's better.

BlackBerry Smoke, and we have eight headliners and the Albany
show is our second headline show of the tour.

I was surprised to learn that you grew up on
a farm. There are people surprised to learn that about you.
Don't seem like a farm boy.

It's you know, it's a crazy thing. But you know, yeah,
I am from the country, but I don't play country
that much. But I was raised with animals and raised
with horses and all those kind of things, and that's
where I learned my work ethic and my nose to
the stone and my appreciation of life and so forth.

guitars of yours.

I tell you, I think you only put out like
ten of them at one point, right.

It was a Baker's dozen of thirteen and they sold

We never played golf together that I remember.

to hate golf.

That's funny, dude, Let's see. I do stay in contact
with Lars, you know. I'd say probably every six or
eight weeks we throw a little text here and there.
We just last week they were in Greece and he
sent out a thing saying we're over here getting ready
to play in Athens. Bro. I heard about your cancer
thing and sending you love and all that. We also
mentioned you. I've been playing for animals at the Wildlife Preserve.

It bushed in Florida, and so there was a video
a couple of weeks ago they went kind of viral
of me playing for the bobcasts and the wolves and everything,
and so so Lars and his wife are quite involved
in that type of thing, and so he was just
giving me some props about that as well. But I
do stay in touch with him. We still have business
dealings on a weekly basis. You know. I just did

So yeah, we're still in.

And you've had this, you had this incredible chunk in
the nineties and then you had a as a person
in recovery myself, I don't know if you're in recovery,
I only assume I'm sorry for doing that. I imagine
that this part of your life is thrilling, maybe even
beyond Metallica.

I'm gonna have to say that I was having a conversation. Yes,
I gotta tell you, guys, I had one of the
most wonderful experiences yesterday of all time. I was in
Tyler Bryant's studio here in Nashville with Charlie Starr doing
some We're kind of original solo material and just floored
at prowess and the talent and the wherewithal just so crazy.

So we're speaking about mountains to be climbed, and I
climbed the highest mountain, went to the top of the
one that I chose to focus on and commit to,
went to the top of that one, stepped off when
I was on the top of that one, right, and
I went to another when I went with Boyvod. Now,
this mountain may not be as tall, but is more

challenging to climb, and by the time that you get
to the top of it, you feel even more established,
even more satisfaction because of the challenge. So there are
all of these mountains to be climbed. Just because it's
not the tallest one doesn't mean it's not as rewarding.
