Speaker 1 (00:00):
Matt, you're on with Quinn and Cantera in Albany.

Speaker 2 (00:02):
Matt Sorum, Grammy Award-winning rock hall inductee, former GNR, Guns
N' Roses, Velvet Revolver. I mean, the guy's done everything.
He runs with super crazy crowds today.

Speaker 3 (00:14):
Thanks for coming on the show, Matt.

Speaker 1 (00:15):
Thanks for having me. Albany, New York.

Speaker 3 (00:18):
Why, did you ever rip it up here? You must
have ripped it up here in the day.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
Of course.

Speaker 1 (00:21):
I've been all through those neck of the woods.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
Oh, man.

Speaker 1 (00:25):
Poughkeepsie, one of the most wild nights I've ever had
was in Poughkeepsie, New York.

Speaker 3 (00:29):
Really? What happened?

Speaker 1 (00:30):
It was a Sunday night. Something happened every night, that's
all I got to say.

Speaker 3 (00:34):
Okay, fair enough.

Speaker 2 (00:35):
Yeah, I don't know if it's 50 years that you
have to wait until the legal thing is up before
you can talk about stuff like that. I love it.

Speaker 3 (00:45):
We're really impressed with what you've done for the new
double album, Sound and Vision Live, honoring Paul Rogers and
Gieser Butler, all the benefit of Adopt the Arts Foundation.
Tell us how this night came together.

Speaker 1 (00:57):
Well, I started a charity called Adopt the Arts about
14 years ago. And in L.A., I do music for
K-5 public schools with Jane Lynch, my partner, from Emmy
Award-winning actress, amazing actress. John Stamos is part of our
crew and a bunch of great actors and musicians. And, uh,

(01:18):
basically KT5 public schools, they started cutting the arts and
music and I came in and started this charity. So
I have to raise money every year. I moved out
to Palm Springs during the pandemic, my wife. And I,
now I have six schools here and we serve about 4,000
kids and all public, all public schools, underserved kids, underprivileged. And, uh,

(01:42):
you know, take care of them with music. So I
have to raise money every year. So I got the
theater here in Palm Springs, about 700 seat theater called
the Plastic Theater. Paul Rogers of Bad Company is a
winter resident, so I asked him if he'd be... Oh.

Speaker 2 (01:58):
I was wondering how you got him to perform, dude, because,
you know, all that's going on with him, and this
is last March. I mean, Paul is an amazing dude.
That's really cool.

Speaker 1 (02:08):
He didn't even perform on the Rock and Roll Hall
of Fame, but he did it for the kids. Yeah, man.
It blew my mind. It got very emotional. Let me.
Which actually Paul's on two songs on the record. He's
saying rock and roll fantasy and all right now. And then, uh,
geezer Butler's on four songs on his record.

Speaker 2 (02:28):
Sweet.

Speaker 1 (02:29):
Uh, yeah. Amazing.

Speaker 3 (02:31):
Are you on, are you playing drums?

Speaker 1 (02:32):
Yeah. Playing drums on everything.

Speaker 3 (02:34):
Awesome.

Speaker 1 (02:34):
Yeah. Good.

Speaker 2 (02:35):
Good.

Speaker 1 (02:35):
Noodle band court on guitars. Yeah. That's great. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (02:39):
Oh, that's rocking. I should say this. You come from,
your mother was a musical teacher who was spreading the
music of a word back in Orange County back in
the day. This is great to hear that you're out
there continuing to do that. I bet, you know, I'm
very proud of you.

Speaker 1 (02:55):
Yeah, well, the public school system is kind of, you know,
getting a lot of, they're cutting a lot of stuff because,
you know, they think they don't have the money. But
my thing is like, listen, we need these kids to
have music. I mean, there's too much stuff going on
in the world. to take that away from them. And
they need to be inspired and have a feel-good moment
during the school day. And it just shakes who they

(03:16):
are as humans. We all know music is a great
healer and does a lot of stuff for a lot
of people. And the one thing we can all agree
on is music. So my thing in life is give
these kids all the tools necessary to become a better
human being. So that's what I've been doing for 14 years.
If you buy this record, all that money goes to charity.

(03:38):
I own the vinyl company with my partner. Nice.

Speaker 3 (03:41):
Yeah, so go to experiencevinyl.com or visit adopthearts.org to buy
the record. I assume that Intimate Show must have raised
some money for Adopt the Arts, right?

Speaker 1 (03:51):
We did pretty well. We got to keep raising money.
As soon as we raise the money, we start again.
So this record, we're going to do 2000 Limited colored vinyl.
Deezer's got his own record. Nice. And then... Paul's got
his great singers, Glenn Hughes, Corey Taylor, Lizzie Hale, amazing
cast of characters, of course, Paul Rogers.

Speaker 2 (04:15):
Robert DiLeo of STP, like 30 years ago, if you'd
asked me about how Robert would be as a person today,
I'd say old, curmudgeon-y. grumbly, angry man, but I bet
he's softened in his older age, hasn't he?

Speaker 1 (04:29):
You know, he's such a great bass player.

Speaker 2 (04:31):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (04:31):
When you listen to the Bad Company stuff, he was
the perfect choice, and I love Robert. He's probably one
of the great rock bass players out there.

Speaker 2 (04:38):
Agreed.

Speaker 1 (04:39):
You know, and so he nailed it, and then, of course,
we had Geezer on playing the other stuff. Yeah, it's
a killer record. You know, I mixed it. I spent, like,
two months putting everything together. Three months, actually. I just
finished it, and I pressed it on vinyl. So I
just want everyone to check it out and know that
they're doing a feel-good and they're getting a piece of

(04:59):
limited art. And, yeah, it's all for the kids. All
for the kids.

Speaker 3 (05:04):
This is great. It's Matt Sorum, Supergroup, Velvet Revolver. Of course,
Guns N' Roses on the three iconic albums, Rock and Roll,
Hall of Famer. When you are not doing this, what
do you do? Are you still working this musically?

Speaker 2 (05:17):
Are you a dad?

Speaker 1 (05:18):
I am a dad. I have a five-year-old daughter. I'm
a late bloomer. I'm a... People go, hey, man, aren't
you a little old? Have you ever had a kid?
I go, I don't know. Why don't you ask Mick Jagger?
I mean, I'm like a kid.

Speaker 3 (05:30):
So this must be great, though. At this point in
your life, you have time to spend with your child.

Speaker 1 (05:35):
I love it. I'm taking a tour in Japan. I'm
going with Eric Martin from Mr. Big. And I talked
about Komodo, a famous Japanese guy.

Speaker 2 (05:42):
Sure.

Speaker 1 (05:42):
But the family's coming to Tokyo with me. I'm leaving
in about a week.

Speaker 2 (05:46):
Wow.

Speaker 1 (05:47):
And I'm bringing my wife and daughter. And we're going
to hang out in Japan. Yeah. I don't go on big,
long-winded tours anymore. I'm more about my charity, my entrepreneurial projects.
And I have a band called Kings of Chaos. Yes.
And we go out and do shows. So it's a
fun thing. I get to hang out with my peers.

Speaker 2 (06:07):
I see they just added. Are you a current member
of Hollywood Vampires, too?

Speaker 3 (06:13):
Not anymore, right?

Speaker 1 (06:14):
I was in the first version of Hollywood Vampire. Okay,
that's right.

Speaker 3 (06:19):
The stories.

Speaker 1 (06:21):
Yeah, I did that gig for about two years.

Speaker 3 (06:24):
Okay, wow.

Speaker 1 (06:25):
And me and Duff left, and then Robert DiLeo came
in for a minute, and then we both split.

Speaker 2 (06:30):
Nice.

Speaker 1 (06:32):
But, yeah, that was fun. It was a fun little
ride for a second.

Speaker 3 (06:34):
I should say this.

Speaker 2 (06:35):
Matt Sorem, that most handsome former member of Guns N' Roses,
no question about it. I don't think there's a better-looking
member of Guns N' Roses, and I think that's a compliment.

Speaker 1 (06:44):
Thanks. I mean, you know, back in the day, I
look back at photos of me from back in the day,
and I'm like... Man, we must have been drinking a lot. Yeah,
you are. Yeah, you are.

Speaker 2 (06:53):
You can't remember Poughkeepsie.

Speaker 3 (06:54):
Limited edition all-star double album, Sound and Vision, on sale
next month. Pre-order now at experiencevinyl.com and learn more at adoptthearts.org. Thanks, Matt.

Speaker 1 (07:05):
Thanks, Matt. Thank you. Our pleasure.

Speaker 3 (07:07):
It's Quinn and Cantera.

Speaker 2 (07:08):
Picks 106.
