Eddie is in quite the predicament with his little league team. Since he is the coach of his son's team, he gives his son the hardest time and doesn't go easy on him like he has seen other coaches do with their sons. Well now he is in a situation that may end up with his son getting recognized but he doesn't want people to think that he is playing "daddy ball" and that his son really deserves the recognition.

So my life right now is kind of insane. It
is all baseball, all the time. So the next two
weeks about are just insane for me. I haven't updated
anyone since the last time. We sort of talked about
my dilemma with me taking the All Star team even
though my son Jack didn't want to play, and all

All right, time for an update. YEA, Well, when last

we talked, I was kind of in this weird dilemma
of whether or not I was going to be the
All Star coach. The league really wanted me to be.
I was planning on doing it, but then my son
Jack kind of let me know that he was not
really interested, that he didn't feel like doing All Stars
and he was done, and I said, oh, man, well

that changes everything, because I mean taking on another team
is a lot of work. All Stars is a lot.
I mean it's a lot of practices and things like that.
And so I was like, man, you know, I'm still
in our regular season. You know, we're in our Tournament
of Champions right now. We're still alive and playing. So
I knew taking on All Stars I basically double dipping in.

It's like baseball every single day, and it's like games
and practices and everything else. So it's just a lot,
and to do that without my son on the team
kind of didn't make sense to me. And I was like, man,
I don't know, but again, the league's done so much
for me and I kind of want to help them
out and I'm invested in the kids. I was just
in this really weird space and I really didn't know

what to do. Well, a lot's happened since, A lot
has happened since then. So basically what the deal is
is the All Star team was announced and then right
after that, one of the kids that was named on
the All Star team got hurt broke his arm. Yeah, brutal,
and so I had already said all right, I'm going

to help you guys out. I'll be the All Star coach.
I'll do it. And so I accepted the job and
then the teams were announced. Kid gets hurt and I go, oh,
so does that mean I only have twelve now instead
of thirteen? And they go, no, you can name a
replacement and it could basically be anybody. Really, I said,
so could I name my son? And they're like, yeah, absolutely, Okay,

well this is wild, even though Jack said he didn't
want to do it. Yeah, like there's a spot open.
Speaker 2 (02:56):
Now, Yeah, you're going to be there.
Speaker 1 (02:59):
I got to be there. You do maybe you've got
to be there.

So there was a long negotiation process, a lot talk
with Jack about you know, this is our last ride.
I personally want this to go on as long as possible.

So, uh, we talked for quite a long time about it.
I'm just trying to explain to him, like, dude, we
let's do this, man, let's do this together. Let's this
would be fun.

It's fine. I've tried to tell him that for so long.
But you when you're a kid and you're in the moment,
you don't think about regrets. No regrets, man, don't think
about that kind of stuff. And so that wasn't getting
through to him. Everything I was saying wasn't getting through
to him until I told him, like, Jack, I mean,
what are we talking about like two weeks here? Maybe
you know what I mean? All Stars doesn't go im

it's fast unless you win. If you win, then you
go on to sectionals, and you win Sectionals, you go on.
You could go on for a really long time. But
chances that happened are not the best. And so he
thought it was just automatically going to be the entire summer.
My whole summer is gonna playing baseball, which that's what
kind of made him out, which is lame, you know
also too, but whatever, So he wants his summer free,

man whatever, surf and lay yeah exactly, Yeah, no, I
don't like that. So when he heard that, like it
could just be two weeks. We could play two games
and be done. And he's like, oh, okay, well then yeah, yeah,

this is every pace, every ball. He goes, okay, well
then yeah, sure I'll do it.

So I'm like, okay, Jackson, Jackson all start. Yeah. So
all of a sudden, his attitude is completely changed, where
it's like now he's like, yeah, I'm an a star.

They don't do that for fourteen you. Oh, they don't know.
That's kind of I think they still do it in majors,
but I don't think they do it in juniors. Really,

gotta talk to the team with my opening speech of
what I expect out of you. So I'm sure you're

little weird, but I know he would have made the team,

daddy ball. Daddy ball is where you give your if

can give your kid basically everything. So and it happens
a lot in literally where where you know, oh so
and so's kid is the starting pitcher. Is he the
best picture? No, But he's your kid, so he's the
starting pitcher or whatever it happens all the time. So
that's called daddy ball. And I am the biggest proponent

against daddy ball. And like, in fact, I'm a way
bigger jerk to my own kid than I am to
anybody else because I don't want it to look like
daddy ball. I'm gonna you're You're gonna set the example
because sorry, but you're my kid, and so the last
thing I want is my kid. We looked around as
goofing off, and I don't let anybody else goof off.

My dad was with me. He didn't give me any
specially anything, like it was worse for me, Like I
wouldn't play as much because he felt bad sitting in
the other people kind of that's why you deserve I didn't.

It's like the end of the season, each team nominates
two kids for basically like sportsmanship award and a most

And what sportsmanship like to you is that being the
best player?

an okay season, he was he was pretty good. He

this year, light bulb kind of went off. He had

going to be an All Star. Is an All Star,

And so I went, that's pretty good. That's an impressive feat.
I think he's the most improved. But I'm so weirded
out and against Daddy ball. I've seen this happen before,
where you know, coaches name their kid on the All
Star team. They decide and they don't deserve it, and

best sportsman. What the hell. But I got to I'm

You didn't make All Stars without having the four, which
is having a great attitude, bringing some energy, having great effort,

and being focused. You don't become an All Star without
those four. Show me a kid on the All Star
teams that doesn't have the four, it doesn't exist.

That's how they got there.

That's right, right, So what's the point of dropping the four?

When you were your first time being an All Star
coach or recently, were you just sitting in a room
thinking about what am I going to tell these all
star kids, and then just came to you like an
aha moment of you already need to know the four.

So the four is expected, show up? You got the four?

All Star attitude it's different, different than just you obviously
got a good attitude, but this is next level. You
got to bring all star attitude.
Speaker 3 (09:02):
Oh yeah, I don't know, but I'm like scared for
you should be scared.
Speaker 4 (09:06):
I feel like my mind's about to be blown.
Speaker 1 (09:08):
Here's the deal with all starsky? Is it? All stars?
There's like minimum play, but that's it, Like you don't
you know most all Star teams you play your top
nine and the rest of the team.
Speaker 4 (09:22):
Sorry, the rest of the season, the coaches usually shuffle everybody, and.
Speaker 1 (09:27):
Yeah, you want everybody to play. All that stuff. All stars.
It's usually top nine man, and if you may get
any or two, that's it. Wow. But with all star attitude,
that's where we start. Okay, you you goof off, you
don't show up to practice, you do whatever, going down,
(09:51):
going down, going down? What if you're just everybody else
got it? It don't matter. I don't care. You don't
got the all star attitude. You wantn't play. You ain't
playing on my squad.
Speaker 5 (10:02):
Sorry, but if there's a one kid bear and everybody else,
wouldn't matter.
Speaker 2 (10:04):
He's playing even if he doesn't have that.
Speaker 5 (10:08):
Yeah, but he's really good.
Speaker 2 (10:09):
We need you and his girlfriend in the middle practice.
Speaker 1 (10:12):
Well, that would never happen. Okay, you kidding?
Speaker 2 (10:15):
I mean, but sometimes the best player.
Speaker 1 (10:17):
Remember the four? You know you would never do that?
Okay if you got the four? So uh so, I
don't know how that went over. Yeah, the confused a
little bit like wait, if I'm the best, then why
am I not playing? Don't matter me? Don't matter me,
aprove Listen, this is an honor, all right, this is

your You're on the all starts of privilege. You got
you got to bring it. Okay, we're not We're not
just showing up. We're not la la gagon over here.
We're not Okay, you got you gotta bring it. And
so that that starts with All Star attitude. So that
was the message yesterday.

How they look, How were they exuding an example that
bying the gratitude.
Speaker 1 (11:00):
So far, so good. Yeah, I mean, I mean, uh,
I am a little bit of a different coach for
All Stars, you know, regular season and with my regular team.
You know, I'll put bass in the voice when I
need to, but I'm not, you know, always barking and whatever.
I mean. I get the guy boys to play the

way they're supposed to play. Tell them if I see
something that's not right or whatever. But All Star coach
Eddie is on it. He's barking all the time. We're not.
We're not doing anything. We're not messing.
Speaker 3 (11:35):
Around on Dancing with the Stars, your mentor.
Speaker 2 (11:40):
You're coaching mentor about every day every day. No messing about,
no messing about.
Speaker 1 (11:47):
We're not messing about. Okay. So uh oh they got
the message real quick. Yeah. So I mean, what you
want to run? We can. We can spend all practice run.
Don't you want to do that?
Speaker 2 (11:58):
No, I don't.
Speaker 1 (11:59):
We can do that we can do that I don't
want to do. Okay, then then figure it.

He gets it. He's been with me for we've been
coaching him for ten years, so he knows what's up.
And so yeah, he's the last person that would decorate surprise.
He's not gonna no, no, no, no, no, no, I'm scared.
I'm not even there, right, He don't take a.
Speaker 2 (12:21):
Lap around the building. I don't think it anywhere emily
around the building, take a.
Speaker 1 (12:29):
Lot institute like this. But there is one thing that
I am a little bit concerned about. Now. You know,
I told you adding him to the team felt a
little weird, but I know he would have made the team,
so it's not that weird. But that's basically what's called
daddy ball. Daddy ball is where you give your if
(12:52):
you're the coach, you become the coach so that you
can give your kid basically everything. So and it happens
a lot in literally where where you know, oh so
and so's kid is the starting pitcher. Is he the
best picture? No, But he's your kid, so he's the
starting pitcher or whatever it happens all the time. So
that's called daddy ball. And I am the biggest proponent
(13:14):
against daddy ball. And like, in fact, I'm a way
bigger jerk to my own kid than I am to
anybody else because I don't want it to look like
daddy ball. I'm gonna you're You're gonna set the example
because sorry, but you're my kid, and so the last
thing I want is my kid. We looked around as
goofing off, and I don't let anybody else goof off.
Speaker 4 (13:34):
My dad was with me. He didn't give me any
specially anything, like it was worse for me, Like I
wouldn't play as much because he felt bad sitting in
the other people kind of that's why you deserve I didn't.
Speaker 1 (13:51):
You did have it. You didn't even use a min.
Speaker 5 (13:53):
No, they actually created the first basement glove. Is that fact,
it's a bigger glove.
Speaker 4 (14:00):
I didn't.
Speaker 2 (14:00):
I I was just it Emily, Okay.
Speaker 1 (14:04):
I've never been a daddy ball guy. In fact, I'm
the opposite. And I've actually had people say they appreciate
that about me. Don't do daddy ball, and you know whatever, right,
Like Eddie, we love the way you yourself.
Speaker 2 (14:16):
I think I saw your kid cry.
Speaker 1 (14:18):
I love that. I love that about you. Sorry, sorry,
So yeah, I'm the opposite of daddy ball guy. I've
just never done it, and it just it makes me cringe,
you know, I'm not a daddy ball guy. Well, every
year in this league, you're as a coach, you nominate
two players on your team for different awards.
Speaker 2 (14:37):
Oh, do we do like a banquet?
Speaker 1 (14:38):
No, it's closing ceremonies, closing ceremony, no sermony. No, it's
you know, you have opening ceremonies, you have closing ceremonies.
It's like the end of the season, each team nominates
two kids for basically like sportsmanship award and a most
Improved award.
Speaker 3 (14:55):
And what sportsmanship like to you is that being the
best player?
Speaker 2 (14:59):
Is that being the best.
Speaker 1 (15:02):
So they have like a criteria and it's basically one.
It does not have to be the best player on
the kid because obviously some of the best kids are
like the biggest jerks, you know, And so that's not sportsmanship.
It's it's showing that you're a great teammate, lifting people
up always, you know, bringing a great attitude to the team.
Speaker 4 (15:25):
Award.
Speaker 1 (15:25):
I don't think we call it.
Speaker 4 (15:26):
That, but you could see it though you hear them, Yes, that's.
Speaker 1 (15:33):
Part of it.
Speaker 5 (15:34):
They're starting the chance.
Speaker 1 (15:35):
Yes, yes, all that stuff and so aggressive. Now that's cheerleading.
Speaker 2 (15:40):
Did you ever win this award? No?
Speaker 1 (15:42):
I didn't. Oh he was the best player.
Speaker 2 (15:45):
Oh so jerk?
Speaker 1 (15:47):
Okay, So so I did that, you know again, last year.
So I have to put in my nominations this year.
And so I'm sitting there thinking, and I'm like, okay, well,
I think I know who the sportsman is. Uh, but
who's most improved? Honestly, no joke, it's my kid. I
(16:08):
think it's Jack. He went from last year he had
an okay season, he was he was pretty good. He
wasn't you know, the best player on the team. Was
the worst player on team, but you know whatever, to
this year, light bulb kind of went off. He had
a really good season. Pitched, he he was one of
our better hitters, to the point of where he was
going to be an All Star. Is an All Star,
(16:29):
And so I went, that's pretty good. That's an impressive feat.
I think he's the most improved. But I'm so weirded
out and against Daddy ball. I've seen this happen before,
where you know, coaches name their kid on the All
Star team. They decide and they don't deserve it, and
they give them the awards, and I'm like, really, there,
(16:51):
I've seen that kid act. There's no way he's the
best sportsman. What the hell. But I got to I'm
the coach. I get to give my kid an award.
I'm gonna give my kid an award, and I always
make me very uncomfortable, makes me feel like gross. Yeah,
so I'm like kind of against giving my own kid
an award, but even though he kind of deserves it.
So now I'm like, I don't really know what to do.
(17:13):
So I thought about it, thought about it, thought about it,
and finally ended up saying, you know what, fuck it,
he deserves it. I'm gonna give him. You know what,
people think I'm daddy ball. I guess I'm daddy ball whatever,
but I don't. I know I'm not. But it's gonna happen.
Speaker 5 (17:28):
When he gets out there and gives them the award.
You're gonna hear a lot of typical.
Speaker 1 (17:31):
You're right, you're right, you're right, which sucks because I'm
the so against.
Speaker 5 (17:37):
And they're gonna be like, bet you kids at all
start too.
Speaker 1 (17:42):
Yeah. So I don't know. Man, It's it's a weird.

Feeling to lose because either you over your kid who
deserves the award, or you just have people judging you,
you know, whether they're correct or not.

You know, screw it, just do it.
