Speaker 1 (00:00):
News, Traffic, Weather Talk six ' ten WTV seven minutes

(00:05):
after eight o'clock Friday morning, September twenty seventh. Glad you
are listening this morning. It's Mike Elliott, Columbus Morning News.
Lovey day is off to a good start. A lot
to get to this half hour. I've got Doug Buchanan
standing by from Columbus Business.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
First.

Speaker 1 (00:18):
We'll talk to local business here in a moment, but
wanted to get a quick update. Hurricane Heleen is now
a tropical storm status. But let's go to Tampa, Florida
and part of our iHeartRadio coverage at WFLA Red Shepherd
joining me. So read, good morning. I hope you're doing
well in Tampa as the sun is coming up. What

(00:38):
are you seeing out there in your area?

Speaker 3 (00:40):
Well, I'm going to start with the good news, Mike.
The water is starting to recede throughout the Bay Area.
We had some record high storm surges across the region
and that means dozens of water rescues. At the moment,
more than a million people without power across the state,
two hundred and thirty four thousand in Penelas eighty six

(01:02):
thousand in Tampa. We've got parts of downtown Tampa are flooded. Bridges,
the big bridges, Sunshine Skyway, Howard Franklin Court, and Campbell
Gandy Bridge all closed. The bridge to Davis Islands in
Tampa is closed, and that's significant because Tampa General Hospital
is on the other side of that bridge. So we

(01:25):
got about thirty five hundred National Guard troops standing by
ready to provide some help. So it's been a long,
long twenty four hours down here.

Speaker 2 (01:34):
I'm glad you're doing okay.

Speaker 1 (01:35):
Read is it pretty much anything like east of I
seventy five wasn't as affected as added things towards the coast,
is what I'm hearing.

Speaker 3 (01:44):
Well, not not in terms of storm surge, no, but
at one point we had rainbands and winds stretching across
the entire state. Helene was a small storm in terms
of hurricane force winds. They only extended out about sixty
miles or so, but tropical storm force winds pretty much

(02:05):
covered the entire state of Florida as it went by.

Speaker 1 (02:08):
And I was listening to some of your coverage on
WFLA last night, and when you start to hear about
places like Naples and Fort Myers that were not in
the direct path. I mean they were flooded out at
seven eight o'clock last night. That tells you a lot
about that storm surge. And it kind of coincided with
the high tide there last night, too.

Speaker 2 (02:25):
Didn't it.

Speaker 3 (02:26):
Storm surge was the big threat here in the immediate
Tampa Bay area. They were talking about a five to
eight foot storm surge, and that's pretty much what we got.
Even higher totals as the storm the area where the
storm was going to make landfall, I think in the
Big Bend. At some points they were talking about a
twenty foot storm surge. If you can imagine that, I.

Speaker 2 (02:50):
Cannot imagine that.

Speaker 1 (02:51):
readA. That is amazing. Well, I appreciate the time. I
know you guys are busy and probably need to nap here,
but I appreciate the time. Stay safe, read Shepherd, part
of our iHeartRadio family at w FLA in Tampa.

Speaker 2 (03:04):
Thank you for the time, and stay safe, my friend.

Speaker 3 (03:07):
Thank you appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (03:08):
At about ten after eight, we'll switch gears, jump over
on the Legacy Retirement Group dot com phone line and
say good morning to Doug Buchanan.

Speaker 2 (03:15):
Who is are you at another breakfast? Doug?

Speaker 1 (03:19):
I feel like I feel like, how many breakfasts do
you go to a month?

Speaker 4 (03:23):
Oh a lot, at least a half a dozen. And
you know this one is also one of ours and
economics forecast with the fifth thirder at the Museum of Art.
So I stepped out and I'm staring at a very
large painting that I would be I would struggle to
explain to you.

Speaker 1 (03:41):
And that's what makes it art, buddy, That's what Doug Buchanan,
editor in chief Columbus Business First. You can find him
at Columbus Business First dot com. And before we talk
about the food, which I always enjoy, the restaurant speed round.
We do have a number of companies that got state
tax incentives Doug in exchange for moving their business to
business is the Central Ohio. So we'll power through these. First,

(04:03):
BBI Transportation, this is a trucking company coming to town.

Speaker 4 (04:07):
Yeah, this is DBI Logistics Local. This is a local company,
but they've been expanding like crazy. They're the ones who
if you've been over by Columbus Crew Stadium, that brand
new office building that's right next to they're taking that
whole thing and now they're also setting up a business
an office for their transportation side. That's going to be

(04:27):
in b Bets and they're going to hire about one
hundred people there, which is fantastic. They got a state
incentive for that. And then there was a South Korean company,
I think it's crounsin Arayah Nanotech. They seem to be
a semiconductor supplier, so they're going over in Hebron to
be close to the Intel plant. They're going to have
I think about fifty jobs there. And then there's a

(04:49):
company called Zenesco Equipment, just good old fashioned work trucks,
work truck parts and they're going to be setting up
in Lancaster and having about twenty jobs. All three of
them got the attacking center.

Speaker 1 (05:01):
Are we have you heard anything about these sort of
you know, complimentary businesses to the Intel plant coming into
that area of a new Albany Hebern You mentioned the
nanotech firm there.

Speaker 2 (05:11):
Are we seeing a lot of that happening.

Speaker 4 (05:14):
That's a very interesting question because yes, we are seeing,
you know, people buying land, We're seeing people making some commitments,
but it has not been nearly at the pace that
we expected when Intel first made that announcement. I think
from the the the the ideas that a lot of
these companies are just not you know. I mean, they're
still confident that Intel's going forward with this, but you know,

(05:36):
Intel has slowed the pace of things a little bit,
so you know they're going to slow their pace for
coming and setting up. So we still expect to have
all the benefits, all the economic activity, just not on
the same time frame that we are nitively originally thought.

Speaker 2 (05:51):
That makes sense.

Speaker 1 (05:51):
Speaking with editor in chief Columbus Business First, it's Douglas Buchanan.
You can find him and take a browse and maybe
grab yourself a subscription colun business first dot com.

Speaker 2 (06:01):
All right, let's talk restaurants. Doug.

Speaker 1 (06:03):
North Market is getting a cheese steak outfit that they
You had me at cheese steak, Doug.

Speaker 4 (06:09):
Well, I'll tell you what, and it's really it's an
interesting switch because the space that they're taking in the
North Market used to be a vegan restaurant. From the
vegan to cheese steaks, it's a kind of polar opposite.
But this is Marlow's Cheese Steaks. It's a real kind
of local success story. They started with a food truck,
then they expanded with a restaurant in Gehanna and and

(06:29):
now they're you know, coming to the to the North
Market to take that space. So they have you know,
shown that the concept works, and I would expect that
they're going to do very well to the North Market
as well.

Speaker 1 (06:38):
Marlow's Cheese for me for sandwiches and cheese steaks, it's Warriors.
It has been I mean the downtown location, there's a
location in Clintonville which is closer to me now, So
anytime we get a more competition in the cheese steak
world is good as a good thing for me anyway.

Speaker 4 (06:54):
Yeah, and Warrios they just happen to be right next
to us in the arenadity, so we are quite aware
of how popular Warriors is.

Speaker 2 (07:03):
Unbelievable.

Speaker 4 (07:04):
It's the mob scene most days there.

Speaker 1 (07:06):
If you've not had Warrios sandwiches and they do more
than just cheese, that you owe yourself a trip to Warreos.

Speaker 2 (07:12):
All right, Doug.

Speaker 1 (07:13):
The Gallows family is rolling with another new addition to
their portfolio.

Speaker 4 (07:18):
Yeah, I mean, this is a family owned restaurant business.
And they started with Gallows tap Room on Bethel up
by the Microcenter up there. They've since you know, it's
been a while, but they had, They've got a place
in Upper Arlington, they've got a place in Clintonville, and
then I believe it was last year they went into
the North Market in Bridge Park with a pizza concept
and that has done so well that they're now breaking

(07:40):
out and doing an actual pizza restaurant. This is going
to be in Dublin at the Corners development of Diamoner's
putting their built on France Road. So it'll be their fourth,
you know, full line restaurant. So, you know, very successful
family who's you know, now getting to start from scratch
with a you know as a brand new restaurant in
a brand new concept.

Speaker 1 (08:01):
Doug, I see, matt the Miller's is getting a new
uh outfit in Dublin. Matt the Miller's been around since
kind of the middle like two thousand and seven, two
thousand and eight, and that's a really at an underrated restaurant.
And I always kind of forget about matt the Miller,
but every time I go, it's always a good experience.

Speaker 4 (08:18):
Yeah, I mean, I'm the same way. I've always liked
a going there, But I mean, what does a Matthew Miller?
I just want to think the name is so yeah,
so they're rebranding. They're going to go MTM Steakhouse, which
we you know, we've talked the steak is kind of
having a revival here, especially these high end steakhouses with
Butcher and Rose downtown and you know Smith and Wellonsky

(08:40):
relocating downtown. I mean, there's a lot of high end steakhouses.
So I think that this is you know, it's just
a way for Matt and Millers to really kind of
brand itself a little bit better. They're adding steaks to
the menu, more steaks than the menu, so it's a
you know, it's already a pretty successful restaurant. I think
this would do well for them.

Speaker 2 (08:58):
I didn't know it was just same owner as the
owner of Tucciese.

Speaker 4 (09:02):
Yeah, exactly. And he was also co owner of Oscars,
which is right across the street from that in Dublin.
So if you were a fan of Oscars, which has
since closed, he's bringing some of the dishes from Oscars
over to the new NTM Steakhouse. And meanwhile, Tucci's, you know,
during the pandemic, they added you know, they really you
did the patio and enclosed it and really expanded that space,

(09:26):
and that's been doing gangbusters ever since.

Speaker 1 (09:28):
We have a restaurant that's closing, at least temporarily as
they look for some new space. This is a New
Orleans inspired place called Way Down Yonder.

Speaker 4 (09:38):
Yeah, Way Down Yonder, and they were way down High
Street South and South Columbus. So this is a New
Orleans native, you know, came to town and opened that
restaurant and you go six years ago. So they had
a good run. But they're now closing that location. They're
not going away completely because they would like to find
a new spot and to keep the business going. And
in the meantime, their daughter has Way Down Yonder Beignets

(10:02):
on East Main Street, so as they, you know, really
want to get your New Orleans six, there's still a
place to get it from that same family.

Speaker 1 (10:09):
And we don't have a ton of New Orleans inspired,
you know, Cajun type restaurants. I think of Yachts, which
is here in Grandview, which isn't not necessarily authentic Cajun
or on New Orleans, but it sure.

Speaker 2 (10:21):
Is really good. So another one would be great.

Speaker 4 (10:24):
Yeah, exactly. I mean there's been you know, a couple
of concepts in the Short North and I think there
was one on Gay there for a little bit. But
I mean, you know, we've just seen an explosion of
all kinds of different kinds of cuisine all across the city,
and I mean there's got to be a place for it,
if you just need to find the right location.

Speaker 1 (10:41):
Doug, great stuff. Always great to talk to you. Editor
in chief of Columbus Business First, Doug Buchanan. You could
find him and find out more. And I read a
couple of articles at Columbus Business First dot com stage
or I have a great weekend, Doug.

Speaker 4 (10:54):
Yeah, you too, Thank you.

Speaker 2 (10:55):
Eight eighteen in.

Speaker 1 (10:57):
