Speaker 1 (00:00):
Aisha Lee is joining us now.
Speaker 2 (00:02):
As we were talking about a little bit ago with
one of one of your workmates, Alec Stone joined us
at the beginning of the hour. Aisha and we were
talking about something different, the gas prices and so on,
but we know that part of that is possibly what
led to the Spirit Airlines demise that's happening right now.
Of course it's a bigger issue overall.
Speaker 1 (00:25):
But what is the very latest on this. Welcome to
the show. Thanks for joining us.
Speaker 3 (00:29):
Yeah, thanks for having me. So you're right. The Spirit
Airlines in their filing today and the CEO statement from early,
very very early, even before the sun came out on Saturday,
said that it was ultimately those increasing fuel prices that
caused them to sort of shut down the airline. And
the latest is basically the airline does not operate. It
(00:50):
stop operating as of VAM Saturday. So if you were
at the airport or you had any invacation plan and
replying on Spirit Airlines, unfortunately your is not going anywhere
ever again. So you'll never be riding on those bright
yellow planes and you'll never see them in the sky unfortunately.
But the airline said, because it's sort of anticipated, and
(01:11):
they kind of knew that this is going to happen
on buy like Thurnsday. They had a plan in place
to bring all those crew members home, so things like
pilots and side attendants who were not at their home
basis to buy them home on other airlines. They also
said that if you are someone who booked directly with
the airline using a credit of debit cards, you're in
(01:32):
luck because they have already issued majority of the refunds
as of Saturday evening, and only a small percentage of
it are left which are continuing to be processed. However,
if you booked using you know, their miles or vouchers,
you'll have to wait for a bit longer because they
have to go through that entire bank or some process
before they can issue any more money and refunds. And
(01:54):
if you booked with like a traveler agent or in
third party website, you have to contact them and like
you know, your credit card companies, and the other thing
that people haven't heerned about, which a lot of people
we saw were the weekend enforcment were either like standard
or they're worried about Hey, I've already have a tripe
book in summer coming up with Spirit, you know, hotels,
book everything, So what do I do now? So the
(02:15):
Department of Transportation for that has worked with other airlines,
so American, United, Delta, Southwest, Allegiant, Frontier, Jet Blue, all
all of them are offering what's called rescue fairs, so
you can actually go on they have dedicated specific websites
and links and you can go on those specific airline websites,
you know, upload your booking confirmation for Spirit Airlines to
(02:39):
verify that says yeah, was supposed to fly on Spirit,
and you can get special pricing for the tickets, which
is going to be less than what if I was
to go online and buy and purchase a ticket, which
be slightly less than what I would be paying right
now versus what a Spirit Book person would be paying.
And it's averaging about two hundred dollars for like a
(03:02):
one way ticket, but we have seen people had to
pay a bit more. And a passenger recently totally ABC
that he had to pay sixteen hundred dollars for the trip,
which is a lot if you think about it, well,
like families and stuff. So it is going to cost
you expensive, but that's the only way out.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
Yeah, that obviously that is a lot and I shall
I don't know if you know, you're let's say you
tried to take advantage or you wanted to use you
were one of the people that you know, Spirit Airlines,
you had something set up and you wanted to go
with one of the other carriers for that capping ticket price.
You have to be able to prove that you had
(03:41):
a Spirit Airline, you had a you know, you had
bought a ticket with them, correct, I mean I would
think they would make you prove that to get that
you know, that discounted fair.
Speaker 3 (03:52):
Correct. Yeah. So you have to you know, enter in
your booking information or some sort of like picture confirmation
of the booking to be able to avail us with pies.
And also those pizons are not adilible like the entire time.
Most of them are limited for like the next two
weeks or like you know, seventy two hours or like
five days, and subsidvary by airlines. Is also like United
I believe is the longest one, but like Delta is
(04:13):
only five days. Southwest and Jeff Loup for available for
like seventy two hours.
Speaker 2 (04:17):
Oh okay, yeah, that's something definitely that's definitely something to
keep in mind if if you're one of the people
that's been affected by this Spirit Spirit Airlines shutdown. Hi,
shah Leie, thank you very much for the very latest time.
I appreciate it.
Speaker 3 (04:31):
Thanks for having us.
Speaker 1 (04:32):
You got it.
Speaker 4 (04:33):
I'm still not convinced they're done.
Speaker 1 (04:35):
You think Spirit's going to come back now?
Speaker 4 (04:37):
Maybe not as the company that it was, but I
would not be surprised to see some sort of investment group,
maybe Elon, Eric Junior or Don Junior and Eric coming
together and in buying them out of bankruptcy. Going to
the creditors saying we'll give you forty cents on the dollar,
or you can let them file for bankruptcy and get nothing.
You want to agree to this great write it up,
go to the bankruptcy court says we're willing to satisfy
(04:59):
all of their debts forty cents on the dollar. The
agreements have been accepted, and then just hold the assets
until the fuel thing straightens out put them back in
the air.
Speaker 2 (05:07):
So that's an interesting concept. And if you get people,
so you named a couple of people, and certainly you're
spitballing if those people step up in that kind of
happens in that scenario, then there is definitely money to
be made that because they're ironclad.
Speaker 1 (05:26):
Think about the heavyweights you just named.
Speaker 2 (05:29):
There, because it really feels like, I mean, how often
are we hearing the news report that this carrier and
that carrier All they do.
Speaker 1 (05:38):
Is lose money. They gotta up the amount of money
they're charging for you to put up how much cake?
Speaker 4 (05:45):
And that's they're not losing money. I mean.
Speaker 1 (05:47):
And that's what's funny about this.
Speaker 2 (05:49):
If you just watched or you from the sidelines, you're
watching the way that this gets reported. It's like, how
are any airlines making any money? But they are, yep,
And that would be a brilliant move if they were.
Speaker 4 (06:03):
To do that. The President was already trying to work
something out with them. They folded, but that was government.
But you know Donald Trump's interest in helping them. That's
going to spike the interest of people with wallets that
can do it themselves.
Speaker 2 (06:16):
Yeah, yeah, I think that could be and it could
be very lucrative depending on how it's run.
Speaker 4 (06:22):
But lo is this one of those people from Shark Tank.
Speaker 1 (06:26):
Hey Jim, welcome to the show. Thanks for listening.
Speaker 5 (06:29):
Hi, how you doing Hey, good, thank you. I was
working out there this morning and I noticed there's a
bunch of uncleaned bags and spirits baggage service office from
the people apparently got in earlier or didn't get in yet,
but their bags came in and there's no way for
these people to get their bags. And some other passengers
(06:49):
came by and they said, well, we got bumped off
the flight, but our bags are down in Florida. We
have no way to get them back up here. How
are you going to supposed to get our bags back in?
There's nobody here to talk to, and nobody answers the
phone when they can call up the number that's there
because nobody's at work.
Speaker 2 (07:04):
That is, I didn't even think about something like that.
Speaker 1 (07:07):
That is insane. Oh my god. Yes, these poor people, man, oh.
Speaker 5 (07:13):
Are going to get their bags back if ever until
maybe the airport is victim out of there and they
finally open up the office and maybe calls up the
passengers to see if they want to come out and
get their bags.
Speaker 2 (07:22):
Let me ask you, Jim, if you were what and
it sounds like you work at you work at John Glenn,
you work here?
Speaker 5 (07:28):
I used to Okay, well it sounds to me stuff
out there now for various people.
Speaker 1 (07:34):
I mean, think about it.
Speaker 2 (07:35):
If you knew where your bag was located, and let's
say it was in Florida or what have you. Depending
on what's in it, you you might be you might
be inclined to just make a trip out of going
down there, which is such a pain. But there are
a lot of people who probably will go whatever you
can have it. Yeah, there's just a few clothing items
and whatever I'll replace.
Speaker 4 (07:56):
I just hope that's all it is. It's not just
socks and underwear. Though.
Speaker 5 (07:59):
I'm worried five bags out here at Port Columbus in
a car seat.
Speaker 4 (08:05):
Or something and that was bad. That's worrisome.
Speaker 1 (08:08):
Yeah, that is.
Speaker 5 (08:08):
And there might medicine in there from people who knows
what else there. Valuables might be in there.
Speaker 1 (08:14):
Right, And that's my point.
Speaker 2 (08:16):
Jim, thank you if if there, if you had any
valuables in there. First of all, I guess nobody took
to heart that spirit was getting on the cusp of
this and they went, oh, roll the dice. Yeah, you
didn't really know when it was gonna happen, And man,
I feel I feel kind of bad for those people.
But I'll tell you, you couldn't have given me a Spirit
(08:36):
Airlines ticket over the last couple of weeks.
Speaker 1 (08:38):
I'd be like, nah, I'm not ready. I'm not ready to.
Speaker 4 (08:41):
The thing of it is that, you know, couldn't they
have given you some more leg room and hiked the
ticket prices and still been well below the competition Probably
probably the ticket's up twenty five bucks apiece each way,
and give people some leg room. You'll have fewer people
in there breathing each other's air. They'll be more comfortable,
and you will continue flying.
Speaker 1 (08:59):
They're so freak and greedy, dude, They're just so greedy.
