Speaker 1 (00:00):
Yeah, the Leafs are in town. I gosh with regard
to the Columbus Blue Jackets coming off the last game
that they played, and it was in DC versus the
Washington Capitals. During the game we lost Worrereenski. Zach Is,
from what I was reading, will be back tonight. He
is going to play tonight, but he went out with
(00:21):
a I don't know, some sort of upper body. They're
so cryptic when they start they start talking about, you know,
things that happen to these players. They're so cryptic about it,
and I think it's part of it's just the it's
the chess game that is the NHL, and so they're
just trying to I think they they kind of try
(00:43):
to hide that or they try to be really really
vague about it. And I almost kind of understand because
it is so sinister in nature when other players know
exactly what you're you know, and you do come back
and they know exactly what was hurting on you or
what you had hurt and sometimes they will, you know,
(01:05):
try to take further that injury or aggravated or and
this is my own take. I've never had a player
tell me this. I've never had anybody connected to the
Jackets tell me this. I've never had anybody really of
It's just my own assessment based on the way that
that all plays out. So it's really sad to think that.
(01:26):
But guess what, when you're on the other team, all
you're trying to do is win. I understand that. And
it's by any means necessary. As a matter of fact,
you know, when we're talking about you know, and a
lot of sports are like that, right, wouldn't you say
that most sports are like that? But when you start
getting into professional sports and it's millions of dollars that
these guys are, you know, continuing to collect from a
(01:48):
lot of these franchises. For instance, what makes me think
about this is my friend Tim McGee, who once upon
a time was well, he was a receiver for the Bengals.
He played with Boomer Size, and he was in Super
Bowl with them and you know, opposite when they lost
to the forty nine ers. And he's a guy. I mean,
some of the stuff that he would tell me that
(02:10):
would go on between these players was unbelievable, especially and
it's just there's a lot of conversation at the line
of scrimmage. Some of the stuff would make you blush.
And I'm talking about people who might even consider themselves like, oh,
I'm off color with a lot of my jokes and
the way that I operate in my life and so on.
(02:33):
A lot of the things that are even said at
the line of scrimmage that he would tell me about
would make those people blush.
Speaker 2 (02:40):
When speaking of football, wasn't Mike dick buckis notorious for that,
Like he would to himself, would be like, I'm gonna
kill your mom, I'm gonna kill your father, I'm gonna Yeah.
Speaker 1 (02:50):
You know, I'd never read that or heard that, but
I'm not surprised to hear that. And it's certainly not
a stretch. No, there's no question. It is not a
stretch at all to think that that's some of the
things that were said, because boy, I've heard a lot
worse than that. Are the exchanges between some of these guys.
I I mean, Tim would tell me the stuff that
(03:13):
they would say to each other, and they're just constantly
trying to try, constantly trying to take shots at each other.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
I mean, at one hat, you're that level of professional athlete.
There's not too many people in any sport that can
reach that level. Yeah, on the other hand, sometimes maybe
your meanness is one of the reasons you're there. I
remember hearing the story about Roberto Duran the box or
he hit somebody, I forget the guy's name. The guy
(03:40):
went to a seizure and they took him to the
hospital and they're like, hey, he's in the guy you
thought was in the hospital. You know, he's fine. What
do you think And he's like, I wasn't. I was,
you know, in shape. Next time he's he's in the morgue. Like,
didn't even hay or the guy he sent somebody to
the hospital. So I guess it just depends on your outlook.
Speaker 1 (04:00):
It's really it's really kind of sad. But I feel
like they're that kind of starts at the high school level,
maybe even younger with regard to the trash talk and
we know all of that stuff, and then it just
gets worse as you get older because and then when
you get to this level, like the level of they're
making millions of dollars, it's anything you can do. The
(04:23):
bottom line is when that's it when at all cost,
win win win. And so as a result with these injuries,
which is kind of where all this started with hockey
and the injuries. They're they're just really vague about it
because the other teams, other players, and there are plenty
(04:44):
of dirty players, and the guys who play hockey at
this level, they know, they know where the dirty play,
they know who the dirty players are. But those are
the people that are just relentless, they're going to be something.
Speaker 2 (04:56):
In football, you can get called for targeting and stuff.
Sure is there rules like that in hockey, because I
don't know any different, really, I don't know.
Speaker 1 (05:05):
So I guess the equivalent of that would be if you,
you know, you end up drawing blood with whatever you did,
like a high stick, and somebody takes a stick to
the face and they're bleeding, that will elevate a lot
of times the time that the guy who is the
(05:27):
perpetrator will end up in the box. So it could
be they could be in there for ten minutes, they
could go to some sort of I mean, there's yeah,
it can. It can elevate to where it's definitely you know,
would behoove you as somebody on the other side to you.
(05:47):
Gotta straddle that line between being tough holding your position
and then not you know, taking the other guy the
other way so bad that you end up hurting your team. Yeah,
because you're say you are a storied player or a
key player on a key line. Well, you don't want
to be sitting in the boxer ten minutes or even
(06:09):
you don't even want to be thrown out of the
game at that point, clearly, I mean that's you. You
want none of that at this level. But yeah, so
we know that on the last game as far as
you know, yeah, when they were in DC versus the Caps,
I mean we ended up during that game, we lost.
(06:32):
Marchie had a I guess some you know, tightening during
the morning skate, so he didn't go. So we knew
we weren't gonna have Caroll Marchenko. Then Olivier and Wrensky
both go out and it's like not that they not
that they were in a position to almost win that anyway,
because they just look dominated from the start, but to
(06:52):
kind of watch all of that play out, now, you know,
throw in you know, we know that Boone Jenner is
out for a while, and then Erica Brandt and continues
to be out. There's it's but we know Zach is
back tonight and he is the radio voice for the
Columbus Blue Jackets. Bob mcgelliganate joining me now.
Speaker 3 (07:08):
Oh flip jacks on a ferris.
Speaker 1 (07:10):
Wheel, Bob, Bob, Welcome to the show and happy Thanksgiving.
Speaker 3 (07:15):
Brother, same to you, Thank you hey.
Speaker 1 (07:18):
So uh, As far as the other night, what what
a terrible road trip for the Columbus Blue Jackets, No
question about that, as far as you know, the wins
and the losses and the losses and the losses. But
then you know, you start like I was just kind
of talking about where Rinsky goes out, Olivier goes out,
Marchie did not go the other night. I know zach
(07:40):
Is is going to go tonight. I believe he's back
on at least I was seeing he's going to play
for the Jackets tonight. But what's the what's the other
latest on on the other guys?
Speaker 3 (07:52):
They're all out or Chink goes out again today, Olivia
is out, Luca Snelly was called up from the Cleveland Monsters.
He'll make his NHL debut tonight in the place of Olivier.
So yeah, that's where it is, I mean, but that's
where the National Hockey League is right now. There's a
ton of guys that are hurt. In fact, this Toronto
(08:12):
team blue Jackets, will play tonight, had eight guys who
were there last week. There were last Thursday. They had
eight guys that were not necessarily on the injured list,
but they weren't playing because they had an injury. They're
getting them all back tonight and the Blue Jackets are
now going through this, so it is. It's just something
that's going on, and the Blue Jackets have been fortunate
(08:34):
to not be part of this for a while. But
it hit him in the last couple of days.
Speaker 1 (08:38):
Yeah, Austin Matthews is back tonight, right, I think I
was reading.
Speaker 3 (08:42):
Yeah, he's back, although you know I shouldn't say because
then he'll light it up. But I mean, this guy.
Their team has not been good this year. They missed
Mitch Marner. They traded him away. They blamed him for
all of their playoff failures. They traded him away this summer.
They got little to nothing back. They took a guy
that had one hundred point out of their lineup, and
they've been spending the entire season to this point trying
(09:04):
to figure out how they make up for it, and
they haven't had many answers.
Speaker 1 (09:07):
Hey, we were just talking to before you jumped on
with us, and I was saying, you know, it's like
they're cryptic with you know, upper body injury or what
have you. There's never anything. It seems like they never
really want to talk specifics. Is that a strategicy thing
for coach Evison? And I know I think everybody pretty
much does that, But is that is that strategy? I mean,
(09:30):
why are they so cryptic about that stuff?
Speaker 3 (09:33):
Because if I know that you have a bad risk
and I'm playing against you, there's one hundred percent chance
I'm going to slash you.
Speaker 1 (09:40):
In the risk, okay, And that's kind of what I
was alluding to. I was saying, I don't know.
Speaker 3 (09:47):
Where the injury is, then it's going to be harder
for me to find your weakness. But if I know
exactly where it is, I'm going right to that spot.
Even after you come back, even after you recover, because
you know what, you're still not one hundred percent, You're
still working your way back. So that's where I'm going.
Speaker 1 (10:05):
Is that a Is that a thing? And I know
you're going Look, that's just how it is. That's how
the hockey is played at this level for that matter.
But is that something that would be considered less than savory.
I mean, as far as I mean, that just seems
but everybody does it, I guess. So it's just like, look,
(10:26):
if you're not doing it, then you're behind the curve.
If you're not going to go after specific.
Speaker 3 (10:30):
It used to be specific in the regular season, and
then get upper body lower body in the playoffs, and
then the coach has decided that you don't need to
know none of your business what's going on with it,
so it's just upper body lower.
Speaker 1 (10:43):
Body, right do you like? And this is also something
I was even talking about too, Bob, Like I'll be,
you know, I'm watching the game and then all of
a sudden I'll hear you know, I'll be watching it
or even listening, and then it's like, oh, Zach went out.
Like for instance, the other night when they were here,
it was the Monday night game. Who were we playing.
(11:07):
We ended up winning in a shootout Montreal, Okay, thank you,
and you know, the people around us were like, yeah,
Zach went out. He got hit in the face with
a puck and I was like what And I don't
even know if that's real, but he I started like
trying to find it and then he was back out
on the ice. Did that happen that night? Do you remember?
Speaker 3 (11:27):
Uh? I don't know what happened to he left for briefly,
I mean, and that's not that's not uncommon. Guys take
a hit or something happens with their equipment and they miss.
You can tell as soon as like if you look
in Provo office out there and Warrensky's not out there,
that's when you know. For me, I'm like, where's he at?
And you know, that's when it jumps out if you
(11:49):
don't see, because it's not always like Oliviy left the
other night, something happened to him down in the corner.
He get all twisted up. It was away from the
puck when it happened, and then he left and didn't
come back. So you know, look out there and coils
there and cylinders there, and you're like, well, where's the
other guy? He's nowhere to be.
Speaker 1 (12:03):
Found, and it's just like that's how it happens. All
of a sudden they're gone and you just go, uh,
we're all guessing together.
Speaker 3 (12:10):
I guess yeah, And you know what, I don't want
to speak for Zach the other night, but once you
give up three goals late in the second period, and
you give up a goal that when there's two point
eight seconds left on the clock and they score in
one point one seconds to make a forward to nothing.
If you're playing through some kind of pain, there's no
reason to finish that game. I mean, that game's over
(12:31):
for all intents and purposes right there anyway, So you
know there's for him not to finish the other night.
That's not that big of a deal to me because
he's back today. If he's missing today, then it's a
major deal. But you know, I don't know if somebody
made that decision, But the fact of the matter is
that game was done after forty minutes. He didn't need
(12:53):
to play in the third.
Speaker 1 (12:54):
Right At the risk of sounding obvious, what are your
I mean one or two top one or two two
concerns with this Jackets team right now? Barring injuries, because
that's the case. You can't control that stuff. It's just
going to happen. It's, like you pointed out, a lot
of other teams are dealing with it. The whole league
is dealing with it, for that matter, But what are
the concerns right now? Clearly the road has not been
(13:16):
very friendly, very kind to the Jackets at this point.
And certainly it's not like, you know, it's sound the
alarm or anything like that, but right now, you'd like
to see not losing blowing two goal leads in the
third period. I think I saw seven different games I
believe was the case, and they didn't lose all of those,
and certainly a lot of them went to ot. And
(13:38):
it's just like the I was even saying the other day,
you know, Jody, I was watching TV and it's like
it was either him or Steve's that said, yeah, well
we're going over time again, you know, kind of a thing,
because that's what it seems like. But that is concerning,
to say the least right now. But what are your
thoughts on on the couple things with.
Speaker 3 (13:56):
That, Well, first of all, the road record. They just
got done playing nine out of twelve on the road,
and you know, it's not like you're going New York, Washington, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia,
like Hoover, hout West, Calgary, Vancouver, Edmonton, Seattle, come back
a couple of games at home and then back to
(14:18):
back having to go to Winnipeg, which to me is
a crime that you have to fly into a different
time zone after you play at home and then play
again the next day. You know, so that one was
that was that game was set up for failure. Then
you go to Toronto, Detroit, Washington. It's been a lot.
And I'm not making excuses for them, like they're younger
than I am. But I'm going to tell you. I
(14:39):
told my wife the other day, I said, honest to God,
this is this is the worst. I don't I don't
remember being this worn out at this point. Now. The
good news is all this stuff is going on early
in the season, which means there's home games coming on
the back end. So that's a good thing. Uh, the
third period thing, it is, it's a concern, and when
it's going on are in the games, I get really
(15:01):
really ticked off about it. So when you do step
back and take a different look at it, it's not
the same thing every night. There are different things that
are happening. They lose in Detroit because they're being aggressive.
They block a shot. It happens to come off dot
Dey Fabriau and go right to one of the Red
Wings sticks. You give up a power play goal right
at the end of the power play you know, that's
(15:23):
how it happens. Then you're being aggressive and you get burned.
You're passive and you get burned. Sometimes it's not the
same thing. If it's one thing, then I say, well,
here's my concern. They know what it is, they're not
fixing it, but it's not the same thing. And they
are getting points out of the games, which is you know,
I'm always mad because I want to but last year
(15:45):
they were losing those games and weren't getting any points
and it cost them at the very end. So it's
a concerned They've got to do better in that they've
got to learn how to lock down games. There's no
question about that. I think the whole again, the last
two road trips have been just awful, yep. And it's
not gonna get much better, to be honest with you,
because you know next week we're gonna do one that
(16:08):
what is it. It's down the Florida, back up the
Washington in the back to back, then to Carolina and
then right before Christmas you've got to go out to
California and play in a him in LA. So it's
the road schedule stinks right now. But on the other side,
you're gonna have more home games, so you're really gonna
have to capitalize on those.
Speaker 1 (16:27):
Yeah, you just hope that all those times, all the
road stuff that you're kind of mentioning, they don't get
so far behind that they got to you know, run
the table if you will, or get close to that,
especially if you know we're limping through with partial personnel
and so on and so forth.
Speaker 3 (16:43):
But I feel like everybody's going to be doing it
then yeah, I mean that's just yeah. You know, there's
a three week break in February, and then it's going
to be you know, you're gonna have guys who don't
play for three weeks and they're gonna be slow starting.
You're gonna have guys who go playing in the Olympics
are going to be really exhausted. It's that's just the
way this year is to be. I think this is
a unique year, and you just got to get your
(17:04):
points whenever you can get your points. You know, like
you said, you don't want to be racing at the end.
So you know, some of these games that they've lost,
or they've lost leads and maybe they've given a point
like the one they gave to Detroit and all that stuff.
It stinks, but you know maybe that other point is
going to be a big factor later.
Speaker 1 (17:20):
Well, they got a couple at home here before I
go on back out onto the road, kind of to
your point. So the leafs in town tonight and then
you know it doesn't get any easier. You got a
penns team coming in on Friday night, so they'll have
they'll be full of turkey, hopefully both teams.
Speaker 3 (17:35):
Yeah, hopefully we're carving two birds in two days exactly.
Speaker 1 (17:40):
Man Bob mcgallaghan, who's radio voice with the Columbus Blue Jackets, Bob,
have a good call tonight. Thanks for jumping on with
us in Happy Thanksgiving brother.
Speaker 3 (17:47):
All right, Mark, thank you, Happy Thanksgiving to you and
everybody out there.
Speaker 1 (17:50):
Thanks appreciate you.
