we've brought you some football action. We're glad you're with
us here this afternoon on Fox Sports nine ten thirteen
ten AM The Game and our free iHeartRadio ab normally

our football broadcast, but having some technical issues over there
on the wkk R ninety seven point seven sides. So

bringing to today's spring game here on Fox Sports nine
ten thirteen ten AM The Game. Glad you're here with
us alongside coach Spence mccrack and Jason Lee and mc McCracken.
I'm Van Riggs. Boy, what an off season it has
been for the opal Aika Bulldogs. You talk about coaching
search a spring training and coach Jonathan Chandler comes in
as the new head coach for the opal Aika Bulldogs

(00:40):
as he gets ready to enter season number one for
him and of course a lot of expectations for his
Bulldog team. Quite a run last season, quite a run
the past couple of seasons in Class seven A Bulldogs
now will be in six A of course, seven eight
going completely away as the private schools have got their
own classifications and that was another story in the offseason.
Basically seven A becomes six A again. Bulldogs were the same

region and same expectations. Again, Bulldogs expected to make another
deep run in the playoffs. Welcome in coach Spence McCracken, coach.
That is an off season and now you talk about
the different classifications and all that, and then the coaching
search and coach Jonathan Chandler is back with us now
as a head coach of the Bulldogs.

Speaker 2 (01:21):
Yeah, and uh man, I was just thinking, as the
big things are changing, you reckon, we're gonna have some
n I L and some trend of for portals getting
out here to the to the high school.

Speaker 1 (01:34):
Right, well, I think the transfer portal may be open
in some capacity, but the n I L is already
a conversation that's going on. It's it's uh, it really
is is going in several different states. George has got it,
and you know it'll be something that that will be
going on here. And you know, if it's if it's
one of those things that's used kind of like it
was supposed to in the beginning, where let's say the

grub Mart wants to get the star running back over
to cut a commercial four and they give them a
you know, a you know, a gift card to come
back to the grub mart. That'd be okay, but you know,
of course it won't be like that. It'll get out
of hand, just like college football is. But hopefully we
can keep the high school game is as pure as
it can be and gonna be an intersquad scrimmage for

the Bulldogs. You hear some cheers in the background, and
that's the ninth grade right now. We got a ninth
grade running back who has broke it loose inside the
twenty but still on his feet. Good right there. We
don't have a roster for the ninth grade. Handy on us.
But the middle school had their scrimmage yesterday at Floral
Park because the varsity was already scrimmaging here and are

doing their spring practice. So the seventh and eighth grade
kind of had an intersquad scrimmage. It's the ninth grade's
turn here before the varsity takes the field at the
bottom of the hour, so a light to get to.
But we come back. We're going to have a chance
to sit down with head coach Jonathan Chandler and hear
from him he'll tell us kind of how the game
will work this evening and they expectations for this Bulldog team.

It'll be good to hear from him. And that's coming
up on the way next here on Fox Sports nine
ten thirteen ten the game which as.

We had a great you know and uh detailed situational
practice on Wednesday, and then uh on Thursday, we we
tailed it back a little bit and got so we
could get the legs back up under our guys so
we could get to put a you know, good product
on the field tonight for us scream and so we're
excited to uh, you know, see what tonight holds. But

(03:30):
it's also going to be a recap of or really
to close up this spring camp that we've been through.

Speaker 1 (03:36):
You got here. I'm trying to think, now, what was
it January ish when you came in and you know,
you didn't have a lot of time to you know,
figure out who you got and that sort of thing.
I know, workouts were going on, you had some guys
playing baseball and do another sports track and field, and
finally when you got everybody together, I know that.

Speaker 5 (03:51):
Was a relief.

Speaker 3 (03:51):
Yeah, that was a relief and you know, I there.

Speaker 4 (03:54):
We've probably got four or five guys that are still
coaching here at opal Ikad that we're here when when
I coached here before from twenty thirteen to the twenty
two season, so you know, you stay in touch with
each other, and got a lot of guys on our
players on our football team either went to school with
their parents or aunt and uncles, so the previous relationships
were there, But starting that first week of January, it

(04:16):
was you know, go to work day one. Coach Kvee McGee,
our athletic performer performance coach, is the absolute best in
the state. And you know, he and I got on
the same page that first day that I was here.
And he's done an incredible job with our weight room,
renovated our weight room over the Christmas break, and you know,
he's done an incredible job of getting our getting our

(04:36):
players prepared for spring camp in the spring game, and
you know we're looking forward to continue to get better
over this summer.

Speaker 6 (04:43):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (04:44):
And you come in and you take over a program
that's had some success, boy the past two years and seven,
they making the playoffs, going to the state championship game
last year, and I know that's attracted some guys to
come to the program.

Speaker 7 (04:53):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (04:54):
Absolutely, so we're able to hire our office coordinator, Cody Hodgens,
you previously coached at Benzer and Russ with Montgomery Catholic.
Cody and I have had a relationship the past couple
of years, so we've got it worked out.

Speaker 3 (05:05):
He will start full time here this summer, but he's been.

Speaker 4 (05:08):
Here for every practice this spring, and he brought along
his wide receiver coach from Benjamin Russell Tyler Price coach TP.
He's been phenomenal, brought some great energy to our receiving
corps and you know, that's really a spot where we have,
you know, the most holes to feel graduated, a lot
of experience in production there last year, I think three seniors,

(05:28):
so we've had some guys that have stepped up will
continue to compete really at three spots there. So Coach
Price has done a great job of getting those guys
prepared and bringing back a former dog, Malcolm Bucks, graduated
from OPALAC in twenty fourteen.

Speaker 3 (05:42):
He's coached with me.

Speaker 4 (05:43):
At a couple of the past schools that I've been,
most recently at Montgomery Catholic.

Speaker 3 (05:48):
So we're excited to have all those three guys back.

Speaker 4 (05:50):
They've been here every day for our two hour practices
and our spring practice.

Speaker 3 (05:55):
And we're also bringing back you.

Speaker 4 (05:57):
Know, old opal like and faithful to add an extra
an extra set of eyes to our defensive line.

Speaker 3 (06:02):
That's coach Kenny Prescott.

Speaker 4 (06:04):
He's very familiar with this place, in this building and
has been a great help with me as far as
getting things done logistically and just items that we need
done in the community.

Speaker 3 (06:13):
He's been a great voice for that.

Speaker 4 (06:15):
And you know, we'll probably have a couple more faces
that will join our staff. Brought along Coach Clay Dawson,
his former offensive line coach for our middle school program.
He'll come up and handle a lot of our video production,
all of our filming that we need. He'll handle a
group of young men and young women that are students
here at the school that devote and volunteer really their time.

Speaker 3 (06:37):
They be They're at every practice, they'll be at every game.

Speaker 4 (06:40):
So Coach Clay Dawson, he teaches over at Foxx Run School,
so we're excited to have him here too, all right.

Speaker 1 (06:46):
Visitor head coach Jonathan Tandler headed tonight spring game. We'll
take a quick time out and come back and we'll
talk how the game will work tonight as it gets
ready to kick off here at the bottom of the
hour on Fox Sports nine ten thirteen ten. The game
it will be a little different offense versus defense. Tell
us how the game will work tonight.

Speaker 4 (06:59):
Yeah, so this will this will be a true split
locker room offense versus defense scrimmage.

Speaker 3 (07:05):
And we've got a points system set up.

Speaker 4 (07:07):
We've kind of adopted and spoke with coach Alex Golish
over at Auldh University on the point system that they
had for the A Day game and really.

Speaker 3 (07:15):
Like that system.

Speaker 4 (07:16):
Our coaches liked it, so we're going to apply it
to our game tonight. Offensively, they got an opportunity to
score points. Obviously, they score a touchdown, they'll receive six points,
get the pat field goal after that, that's a point.
Field goals three points, they go for a two point conversion,
they'll receive two.

Speaker 3 (07:32):
And then additionally, any first down.

Speaker 4 (07:34):
That they pick up in tonight's matchup, they'll receive a point.
And then any explosive play, so that's a run or
a pass or a trick play, you know, there's a
hint there, they'll receive a point off of that, and
then defensively they're gonna have opportunity to score points as well.
So an interception or a fumble would be four points,
a sack will be two points. If they get a

(07:54):
three and out against the offense, they'll receive three points.
A fourth down stop they'll get four points off of that,
and if they score a defensive touchdown, they'll have an
opportunity to score seven points. So it's you know, hopefully
there's a lot of points on the school board on
both sides of the ball.

Speaker 3 (08:09):
And we really like this system.

Speaker 4 (08:11):
Because it doesn't matter if you're you know, on the
first team, second team, or third team, you've got an
opportunity to contribute to the to the final score of
the game, you know, representing.

Speaker 3 (08:22):
The offensive defensive side.

Speaker 4 (08:23):
The offense will be in red jerseys tonight with white
pants and our traditional Opalhaca red helmets, and then our
defense will be in the all black so they'll be
in black jerseys and black pants and they'll wear the
black Guardian caps on their helmets. So again we're looking
forward to that this will be a new points system.

Speaker 3 (08:41):
All of our guys are really excited about it to
have an opportunity to contribute to the game.

Speaker 1 (08:45):
Finally, before we before we get to the game, and
I know there's a lot coming up there. Talk a
little bit about you know, what you want to see
from guys. I know, efforts one of them, but you know,
play making ability. There's a lot of guys like we
said that you haven't had a chance to see up close.

Speaker 3 (08:58):
Yes, we're we're really looking forward to. You know, we've
got a healthy quarterback battle.

Speaker 4 (09:03):
Between senior C. J. Sank and upcoming junior with Cooper.
Those guys have done a tremendous job. And I've been
a part of a quarterback battle before as a player
also as a coach, and those guys are competing against
each other and it's making making both of them better.

Speaker 3 (09:18):
So we're excited to see that continue.

Speaker 4 (09:21):
And then you know, additionally, off of that, getting our
special teams involved. But really, you know, the main goal
that we wanted to get out of the spring as
the coaching staff was to see our team be physical,
and we've done every bit of that, so we hope
that continues tonight.

Speaker 3 (09:34):
And then from a production standpoint on offense.

Speaker 4 (09:36):
We've got a we've got a lot to replace two
senior running backs C. J. Johnson, uh and Jordan Waits,
and then the whole receiving corps from last year has graduated.
So there are a lot of opportunities for some of
our young guys to get out. We've seen some good
things in the spring, seen some things that we need
to continue to work on, and you know, we again
we hope.

the right direction.

Oh my goodness, Well, hey, talk to Kyle about the
round of golf earlier this week Monday, Bulldog fans, if
you weren't able to make it out, it was the
opel Aka Golf Tournament and that was at Robert Trent
Jones Grand National and Calverdett was a star out there
from what I heard.

Speaker 5 (11:16):
Mac, he did.

Speaker 8 (11:17):
We just got through talking about that and his son
the really good at west Ridge and he was there
in attendance, and we were just talking about how good
he did, and he said, he shot U What did
you see about twelve under? Twelve under for birds?

Speaker 1 (11:30):
Yeah? He can you go ad't talk to him? Is
he shy bashing the name?

Speaker 5 (11:36):
Yeah?

Speaker 8 (11:36):
Yeah, he's getting his game face on, getting ready for
the varsity all right.

Speaker 1 (11:41):
He's got an important role down there on the sidelines,
keeping everybody in check. Well, Mac, while we got you here,
let's talk a little bit about the schedule for the Bulldogs. Now,
there is a home game that has yet to be announced,
so we're not gonna bust it here on the air tonight.
I'll wait for Coach Chandler to give me the thumbs
up on that, but hopefully a week zero home game
that we'll start things out on August twenty first, and

(12:02):
then talk about a Hoover match up Mac McCracken here
on a Thursday night. That's gonna be a huge one.
And of course Vincent in the game from ahs AA
TV will be here on w TM. It'll be televised statewide.
Bulldogs o and four all time against Hoover, and it's
high time we get a win there here in the
second game of the season.

Speaker 6 (12:22):

Yeah, Van, you know we were we were talking about that,
you me and I know Dad.

You know how we need a game.

Speaker 8 (12:28):
You know, we got to have a game before that
Hoover game to get our feet wet. And like I said,
I know that, Uh, Coach JC hadn't announced that yet,
but hopefully there will be one and and we can
prepare for that game and get through that one but yeah,
the Hoover one's gonna be great for the city of Opulaka.
Like you said, Van, they moved it to a Thursday,
even though it'll be a tea on TV. It'll be

good time to show off the city in the stadium
and the school and the student body and everything like that.
But yeah, we you know, we say oh and four,
so yeah, we got to get one right there. But
I'm really looking forward to seeing this bunch, you know,
because you know, once you get there, you know, fortunately,
you know, we we didn't we didn't win it, but
we got there, and you know, now all the target

becomes on you, and you know what, Coach.

Speaker 5 (13:13):
Chandler coming in, he knows that, and all the kids
know it.

Speaker 8 (13:17):
You know, you're your public enemy number one, especially in
this region. So you know, champions just persevered through that.
So looking forward to it, guys.

Speaker 1 (13:25):
Now, with that Week zero being a home game, you're
looking at five straight home games to start the season
before you go on the road. And you'll have an
off week before that road matchup at Auburn, which will
be on October the second, and then it will be
four of your last five will be on the road
to close the season. Now, that's gonna be some tough
road games at Dothan and Auburn, as we mentioned Carver

(13:46):
and Prattbell and then you see got sandwiched in there
Smith's station on October at sixteenth. So gonna be a
different schedule for sure, with five straight home games and
off week in the middle, and then four your five
down the stretch going to be on the road. Only
one home game month of October. But of course hopefully
we'll have a home game coming up in November, that
being a home game here in Bulldog Stadium, which this

(14:08):
year with the playoffs, Coach McCracken, what is your thoughts
on the way the playoffs are set up? Now you've
got six teams from the regions in six A that
will make the playoffs. The top two will have buys
and the other four will be in action in week one.

Speaker 7 (14:24):
Yeah, I like it.

Speaker 2 (14:26):
I like any way that you can get in more
teams involved.

Speaker 7 (14:30):
And I realize there's no seven A anymore, but.

Speaker 2 (14:35):
I like when you start off in the playoffs that
you've got I'd rather have more teams than less team. Man,
if you know what I mean to start off, and
you know, if one plays ten and ten gets beat
forty five to nothing.

Speaker 7 (14:54):
Hey, listen, you made the playoffs, and so.

Speaker 2 (14:57):
You know, it's kind of like a little like he
felt in the finals. You know, we kind of looked
at each other after that game, the state championship game.

Speaker 7 (15:07):
And said, hey, there's like Max said, am indigo Van.
We got there. You know, we got there.

Speaker 2 (15:12):
We didn't play very good, we got we got beat
pretty good. But those kids had been there, and I
was looking one other thing I want to say to
you about the roster that we've got for upcoming. You've
got one hundred and nineteen guys on this team, and
you go back and look at when you start your season,

(15:35):
how many seniors and juniors are starting for you. And
I can't tell you right now how many tenth graders
are going to start for us. However, I'm not trying
to be doomsday, but for every tenth grader that you start.

Speaker 7 (15:54):
You usually chalk up one loss.

Speaker 2 (15:57):
Old coach told me that long time ago, and there's
a lot of truth in that, and that's why in
this league, hey, you better be a stud as a
tenth grader to be able to start here. And you know,
I haven't looked, you know, any tenth graders we got
that are starting.

Speaker 1 (16:16):
And you know, I'm not sure right off hand, coach.

Speaker 2 (16:18):
All right, well you fans checked out if your kid
happens to be a tenth grader starting, hey.

Speaker 1 (16:25):
Good for him, Good for him.

Well, anyway, I'm looking forward to another season.

Speaker 1 (16:30):
Well, we'll see tonight, coach, we'll get first hand. I
think we'll see just which tenth graders will stand out.
Because one of the reasons coach Chandler wanted to do
an inner squad scrimmage was because he wanted to get
more players on the field and more opportunities for some
of these guys to shine. So the teams are on
the field right now, huddled up, the Red and the Black,
about to go their respective ways, and we're just about

thirteen to ten A. In the game, Van Riggs alongside
coach Bench mccrack and Matt McCracken, rum of the sidelines tonight.
We got Jason Lee here in the booth with us
as well, and we went over this, I know with
coach earlier, but gonna be a lot like the Auburn
eight A game if you had a chance to to
white set any the touchdowns are gonna be worth six points.
Pats one field goals three points, two point conversions of course,

(17:36):
two first downs though worth a point, and explosive place
Coach McCracken loves these twenty yards or more that's going
to be one point. So it's not the run over
our run or pass coach, is just an explosive play
twenty yards or more. Keep track of those, that's gonna
be our one point.

Speaker 7 (17:52):
I'll do it.

Speaker 1 (17:53):
Interceptions on defense worth four, fumble recovery's worth four, you
get two points for a sack, three and out worth three,
fourth down stop four points at a defensive touchdown will
be worth a full seven points. So very interesting. I
like it. It'll be an opportunity for a lot of
these guys to get out and battle on the field.
And this is something that coach Chandler got right from

a coach Golish at Auburn University. We come back we'll

warm ups. Now, one guy in particular, coach I'd love
to keep an eye on here tonight. Of course, we're

(18:55):
going to talk about quarterbacks and the offensive line and
all that. But one guy in the all season that
has gotten a lot of praise on the offensive side
of the football is a tight end from last year,
Ethan Oiola coach. He has put on about fifteen pounds.
He is now six four to two ten. He's still
a junior and he's number eighty eight. Last year you

(19:16):
saw him get in there, kind of a surprise for
the football team, got in there and called a two
point conversion. But they said, with this guy right now,
coach McCracken that if he continues on the right on
the track he is right now and continues to develop
at his position, could be an SEC type football player.

Speaker 2 (19:34):
Ley well, last year he was six y four one
ninety one and he played right tackle some last year
too early in the season.

Speaker 1 (19:42):
So he's one, he's he's two ten two fifteenish right now,
and so he's a big guy that's going to be
a going to be a big impact guy for the team.
And we heard coach Kate McGee talking about just the
strides he's made, packing on some weight and just becoming
a bigger player. And and something that coach Chandler mentioned
earlier this week at the lunch was the strength of conditioning,

(20:05):
which which we know is outstanding under coach Kay McGee,
but he mentioned the nutrition part of it down to
almost they've got a five and a ten dollar grub
Mart shopping list that they have with the players that
if they've got five bucks, they tell them, what, here's
some options for you that are healthy and will benefit
you more so than some nerds and a slurpee. And

(20:26):
they've got the ten dollars list if you're really hungry,
And they actually went to the Grub Mark. Coach McCracken
and made that list, and Coach McGee did walk in
the aisles finding some things that were good things to buy,
bad things to stay away from, because we all know
the kids venture across the street to the grub mart
and and stock up on their snacks. So I'm not
sure if Hunts Brothers Pizza was on there or not,

(20:47):
but hey, you know there's probably some protein in there.

Speaker 2 (20:49):
There were you're six four and you're too at He's
at two fifteen. He was at one ninety one last year.
You know he could he could very easily put on
another inch too wise and be there.

Speaker 7 (21:02):
Get there about two sixty five. I'm seventy. All right.

Speaker 1 (21:05):
Well, the elephant in the room is the quarterback. And
of course there's been a quarterback battle going on here
in the spring, and you go quarterback battle, Well, quarterback
comes back from last year that goes to the state championship.
But you had CJ. Sankey who moved away from Opalaka
for one year and play down at Catholic. He moved
back to the area. Now he is a Senior're gonna
be a senior this upcoming year with Cooper, who led

(21:26):
the Bulldogs towards the back end of that season and
on that march to the state championship game. He returns
as a junior quarterback next year. And both of these quarterbacks,
from what I gather, coach, are really neck and neck
right now. The margin of separation is very thin. CJ's
going to give you a more running edge. W though,
is pretty swift, pretty good on his feet as well,

(21:46):
So its gonna be a lot of eyes on those
two during this scrimmage here today. Wit Cooper six foot
one seventy three, CJ. Sanki five eleven one seventy one
fuller young of course. Also we'll still be running the
quarterback for the Bulldogs as well, So really interesting to
see how everything plays out there across the offensive line.
You got boy, You mentioned a lot of options there.

(22:08):
Jax Miller comes in as a new player for the Bulldogs,
number seventy and he is a big guy too, coach,
and he is he's really good. We see the team's
now going through a little seven on seven. We'll take
a quick time out come back and Jason Lee and

on the field and as the teams are ending up
their pregame warm ups, coach, I know something to me
and you really talked about here before we're getting started
as the roster numbers, and you know, Van had mentioned
coach Tandler wanting to get a lot of guys in

action on the field. He's got one hundred and eight
guys on this field. And that's an awesome number here
coming to the spring, isn't it.

Speaker 7 (23:11):
It's a lot.

Speaker 2 (23:12):
It's great to start spring training with a large number
like that because you know you're gonna have that. You
can't play for eleven at a time, you know. But
thing great about football is there's a special teams and offense.

Speaker 7 (23:25):
And defense and kicking game. You can just do it all.

Speaker 2 (23:30):
And Van, I was I was going to add one
thing to what you said about about people coming back.
What we're talking about offensive linemen. We got seven offensive
linemens returning that played and and uh so that that
can't do anything.

Speaker 7 (23:48):
But help our football team.

Speaker 2 (23:50):
And uh and then defensively, we got five.

Speaker 7 (23:57):
Front guys coming back, three defensive ends and two and
two defensive linemen. They got to play.

Speaker 2 (24:04):
A lot last year, so we got we got some
pretty good depth coming back. And then of course we
gotta look for new guys. You're gonna have You're gonna
have a tenth grader eleven that somebody out there is
gonna spark and you gonna go home and say, godly
man number five five was incredible.

Speaker 7 (24:26):
Whatever. Well, what I love about spring game.

Speaker 1 (24:30):
Well, when you look at the key returners, you got

several guys we're gonna keep an eye on in that

that is Justin Patterson, a sophomore that coach is really

that knew to the program, and Kanye Billingsley another senior

coaches that coach McCracken. He says, if they can play

as coach said, just speed all over the place, a
