Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey, it's Jeff Stevens, and I am so excited to
talk to the og drummer from Poison, still with the
band getting inducted into the Metal Hall of Fame tomorrow
night in Los Angeles. It's the one and only mister Rocket,
Ricky Rocket, Mister Rocket.

Speaker 2 (00:15):
Hey, Jeff, how you doing today.

Speaker 1 (00:17):
Ricky Rocket? I'm doing great. How are you doing? Man?

Speaker 2 (00:20):
I'm good, but I'm sure I hyped like four miles yesterday.

Speaker 1 (00:24):
WHOA? All right, let's let's talk about that for a minute.
Do you do that a lot?

Speaker 2 (00:28):
No? I do not. I work out and I and
I do Brazilian jiu jitsu. I've been doing that for
twenty five plus years. But hiking, No, sometimes, but not
like every day or every week or something like that.
But yeah, once in a while. It was a beautiful

(00:48):
baker in southern California. So what better to do?

Speaker 1 (00:53):
Absolutely well, just make sure that you're not too sort
of play tomorrow night? Right?

Speaker 2 (00:57):
Oh no, I'll be okay, I'll r.

Speaker 1 (01:00):
Ricky Rockett, original of course and current drummer for Poison
inducted into the Metal Hall of Fame tomorrow night on
the Sunset Strip. First of all, congratulations, Bro, this is
what a story career, so much fun you've had, and
I would imagine tomorrow night will be quite a celebration.

Speaker 2 (01:15):
Yes, it will be. I wish my bandmates were with
me tomorrow night. You know, it really is about Poison,
not about me, And you know, but I look forward
to do it and representing and I'll do the best
job that I can for sure.

Speaker 1 (01:31):
Well, and this year's inductees, I mean a lot of
the folks obviously, a lot of the bands that you
came up with, like Tracy Guns from La Guns. You know,
a lot of Gilby Clark from Guns and Roses. And
I'm sure there will be some surprises and probably people
you don't even expect to be there, right.

Speaker 2 (01:46):
Oh, there probably will be. And there's probably people I
don't want to be.

Speaker 1 (01:53):
That's awesome.

Speaker 2 (01:54):
Hey, a lot of people that wish I wasn't there,
So it'll be great. I'm kidding.

Speaker 1 (02:00):
So do you know do you know what what's going
to happen? I mean, do you know like there's gonna
be a jam session all night party. I mean, obviously
there's a ceremony. Do you have a feel for what
the evening's going to be? Like?

Speaker 2 (02:11):
I have no idea. Well, I have a little bit
of an idea, I take at that. So there's an
induction ceremony and there's a jam. That's all I know.

Speaker 1 (02:21):
That's it.

Speaker 2 (02:23):
I don't know, and I know that that I'm jamming
with Tracy Gunns, Brit Lightning, Tommy London, and Johnny Martin
who we're playing with, and we're gonna do a couple
of Poison songs.

Speaker 1 (02:39):
So okay that, yeah, that's awesome. Well, I'm sure it'll
be a who's who of the eighties metal scene. And uh,
let's go back to about eighty six eighty seven when
we first started hearing about Poison. Did you ever think
that it was going to be as big as it
turned out to be?

Speaker 2 (02:59):
No? No, you know, I've been doing some interviews this
morning and I said something earlier today that I kind
of like it was a moment of realization. I remember
doing interviews back in the day, like the first couple
of years that Poison was out on the road and
playing and stuff, and I remember somebody saying, where did

(03:19):
you see yourself in ten years? And I do remember
one interviewer said where do you see yourself in twenty years?
But never did anybody ask me, where do you see
yourself in forty years? I mean really like honestly, so right,
he's been mind blowing for me.

Speaker 1 (03:37):
Did you? And talking to Ricky Rockett about the induction
into the Metal Hall of Fame talking about Poison's career.
When was it was there? I mean, was it MTV?
Was it some certain festival? What was it where you went? Okay,
all of a sudden we went from playing you know,
clubs on the Sunset Strip to you know, massive tours.

(03:58):
Was there a tipping point? Are something that you saw
in time that really did it for you?

Speaker 2 (04:03):
You know? I think the transition was when we went
out and opened for Rat That was you know, the
first you know arena that we ever played was pretty
eye opening, you know what I mean. And we were
going early. You know, we'd go out there early and
it would be a half filled place, you know what
I mean. Yeah, I mean I think the first couple
of ones it was you know, a quarter of the

(04:25):
of the of the crowd, and then it was half,
and then it was three quarters, and then it was
full by the time.

Speaker 1 (04:32):
We went on Wow.

Speaker 2 (04:33):
And that's when I knew something was happening. That was
transitioning and it was pretty amazing. But I mean when
we played the Castle Downington and we were you know,
sixty eight thousand or one hundred thousand people, whatever it was,
I mean, that was a pretty mind blowing experience too,
Like geez, it must be you know. I was trying
to equate it to like like spaceflight, like one of

(04:57):
these astronauts, astronauts just going I'm above the world. You know,
you know, wow, does that? I don't even know if
you want that to register when you're up there, but
it's kind of like that. I didn't want that to
register at these big shows because it's too much.

Speaker 1 (05:15):
You know what I mean, Yeah, too much. Well, I
tell you the success that you guys had, and I
had a chance to meet bred a couple of years ago,
and I mean, obviously we're by the way, we're rooting
for a Poison tour. I know you said it's probably
not gonna happen maybe this summer, but but man, we're
hoping for it again because I mean, you guys still

(05:36):
sound fantastic, so many great hits, and you know, when
you think of MTV, because I think we have to
give MTV some some credit in there. Too, whether it
was I mean, first probably Headbanger's Ball, but then you
guys and you were just all over MTV all the time,
you know, talk dirty to me, I won't forget you.
Nothing but a good time and your mom adult dance
and unskinny Bob, I mean, and it kept going into

(05:57):
the nineties with something to believe in. So, I mean,
you guys owned that channel. Once you hit on there,
it was like, well, these guys are on here forever.

Speaker 2 (06:06):
No. I you know, we owe a great deal of
our success to videos and MTV and all that stuff,
and DH one and much Music and Canada and all
these places around the world absolutely were a big thing.
I mean, we got called MTV babies and and all
that stuff, and that's fair, you know what I mean.
It's like, so with this, with this fortieth anniversary, what

(06:30):
I'm going to do is go out with my sideband
Rocket Mafia and do the whole first record, the whole
look at the Cat Dragdon record that something Poison wouldn't do.
I just can't imagine Poison ever doing that. Because when
we do go out on tour, we play a myriad
of stuff from all our records. But this is a
tribute just to the fortieth and you know, so this

(06:53):
would not happen on another year. This is just a
one time thing. I'm going to do it and blow
it out and have a great time doing it.

Speaker 1 (07:00):
Oh that's awesome. Well we will definitely look forward to
that happening around, that's for sure. Is there I don't
even know how you would pitch, like as they say,
picking your favorite kid. Is there one song that is
always in the Poison set list that you're most looking
forward to or is it pretty much start to finish?
You know, everything's a party with you guys, But is

(07:21):
there one that you really look forward to every time?

Speaker 2 (07:23):
Yeah, i'd say on Skinning Bob, I like that. It's
you know, it's a little bit of a of a
swing feel. Yeah, there's a drummer. You know, it's really
fun to play, and I like the tempo and the
groove and I just don't I always thought that was
a fun one to do.

Speaker 1 (07:40):
Totally agree. I don't know whether it's the groove or
you and the baseline just kind of rolling along at
the beginning. It's like that is such, that's such a
cool groove. So it's it's good to hear you, hear you,
point pinpoint that one. Well, we will look for you, man,
and we're going to be watching. We can't wait for
the highlights tomorrow night. I'm sure you'll have fun. I'm
guessing it's a minimum of a six hour show, but

(08:02):
it could be eight or ten. I mean, who knows, right,
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (08:06):
I got this little schedule from rit from Dix, and
that's all anybody's told me so far. I don't even
know where I'm parking. I mean, honestly, I don't. I
don't know anything.

Speaker 1 (08:20):
That's hilarious.

Speaker 2 (08:20):
I'm like, okay, take me away, cow.

Speaker 1 (08:23):
Goll somebody please tell Ricky where to park. He's got
to get there tomorrow night. Well, listen, we can't wait
to see the highlights. Ban Yeah, it's gonna be it's
gonna be awesome. We can't wait to see the highlights.
Congrats on the Metal Hall of Fame. You are awesome,
and we can't wait to see on tour, whether it's
with your sideband and with Poison. Ricky. Congratulations, man, thank
you so much.

Speaker 2 (08:43):
I have a great day, man,
