Speaker 1 (00:00):
When you want more road Runners, We've got more road Runners.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
This is the Tucson Roadrunners Insider Podcast.
Speaker 3 (00:08):
We are back and overreacting to this week's Insider podcast.
Jonathan Shaffer here with Arizona Daily Stars James Kelly James.
Last week we're in this same spot. It was Sunday
read Runners were recently swept by the Texas Stars. We
reacted to it, we analyzed it, and fast forward almost
(00:33):
a week later. Tucson now gets their own sweep over
the Bakersfield Condors, capping off with a overtime goal of
victory from the stick of Igor Sokolof. And he has
just been phenomenal to get things rolling. We're gonna talk
about him. We're gonna talk about the star Hunter Drew
has had to continue on. We're gonna talk about other
(00:54):
games within the Pacific Division. With the Roadrunners now at
three and three to start up the first six games
of the season, we're gonna do a draft. Draft is
coming back to the Insider podcast for this week as
well as we're gonna look at a couple of our
favorite Roadrunner jerseys over the past courtesy of James. Is
a great idea and he sent me a nice file
(01:14):
with all the photos as well, so we can take
a look at them as we do the draft as well.
But James, we'll just get right into it. Roadburs win
tonight three to two in overtime. They win last night,
and again if you're listening on this Sunday morning, I
guess Saturday night Road Runs win it three to an
overtime Friday night they wanted five to three in regulation.
(01:37):
Igor sokolof four goals over the weekend. Hunter Drew is
now up to six points in four games played, and
draga Zino following soup as well with six points for
himself and drag Zino, Sokolov, and Hunter Drew now all
on point streaks. Sokolov and Agazino have started off with
the points ever since the beginning of the season back
(01:58):
in Colorado, Hunter Drew coming in last weekend against the Condors,
and gosh, those three guys have really led the charge
for the team. And it's funny because you know, maybe
you can expected more from Andre Gazino and Sokolov, and
it makes it all better that their offseason acquisitions. Then
you have Hunter Drew who's come out of the blue
(02:20):
and has just produced as one of the Roadrunners top scorers.
He's second on the team in goals, right behind Sokolov's five,
second on team and points as I mentioned with Andrew
Agazino tied in that category. And it's just been absolutely
amazing what he's been able to accomplish to get things
started for himself.
Speaker 4 (02:39):
Yeah, it's a great, really great weekend for the Ruinners.
It's not quite the opposite is last weekend, because they
still they didn't really play that bad last weekend, but
this is kind of the opposite where at least in
the results where they were sort of anti clutch last week,
I guess you could say, but they really stepped up
at the end they were clutched. They they scored a
(03:00):
couple scored a couple of big goals at the end
on Friday, and then of course I had the game
winner on on Saturday. So it's a it's a really
interesting way to switch things up like that.
Speaker 3 (03:12):
Yeah, and it was quite a phenomenal start for this
game for the road Runners, uh, you know, or really
really over this entire weekend and got things rolling. Uh
the last night's game on Friday, and the road Runners
had that three to one lead once again. It was
blown away once again and the Condors clad back no
(03:35):
pun intended, but Claude back with a couple of unanswered
goals and then all the sudden Tucsons rolling things out.
UH to get that win at the end of the
game from Sokolov himself making a four to three game
and then scoring that empty netter technically an empty netter
as Rodrigue was still out on the ice, but UH
(03:58):
cast that one in as well. Got the two goals
that game. Saturday Slash Tonight, as we're recording at the
arena right now, Sokolov scored a power play goal to
give the Roners a two to one lead. Condors tied
it once again, and then fast forward to overtime. Sokolov
got it from Max Zueber tape to tape, He walked
over the blue line and then just sniped it over
(04:19):
the five hole of the goaltender in tonight for the
Connor Condors.
Speaker 4 (04:24):
Uh Delia so one of the one of the Posis
lists too. I don't really listen to that much anymore.
The Men and Blazer's the Soccer podcast, they talk about
two to zero being the most dangerous lead in soccer,
which I guess I adver really knows that, but to them,
they say that you go up two to zero and
ended up losing three to two or something. So he
kind of the thing that three to one was that
(04:44):
most dangerous lead for the road owners after they gave
up the three to one lead last night again. But
then Igor comes up and he gets the meals tied up,
and then he gets the game winning goal, and then
he gets that in turns goal off the sort of
empty net. They're they're about to pull pull the goalie,
but then he stole the puck back and scored that.
They did have a skater back there, but he's still
(05:07):
he he went and had that great goal.
Speaker 5 (05:09):
So it was.
Speaker 4 (05:11):
It was another great weekend, another great performance for him.
He's been just lights out. He has sorry with loads.
Speaker 3 (05:21):
I know it's always trying to get these stats loaded
up as uh, you know we're getting things rolling. But yeah,
eight points in six games, Yeah, it's it's been quite phenomenal. Uh,
And James, I have a good stat and I read
the stat a couple of times over the broadcast, but
I got this uh earlier today courtesy of our coordinator
of Communications and Public Relations, Chase Clemmons shouting him out
(05:45):
on that one. So Igor Sokoloff last five playoff games
last season had one going, three assists for four points.
Last five regular season games of last year three goals,
two assists for five points. First five games this year
at the time going into tonight the six points, of course,
but now with two goals tonight, he's now up to eight.
(06:06):
And with that being said, he has seventeen points now
in his last sixteen games. The last time Sokolov had
a start like this was in twenty two to twenty three.
We had seven points in six games with Belleville, and
that year he had career highs in goals twenty one,
assists thirty eight and points fifty nine and seventy games played.
(06:27):
So obviously it's all hypothetical, it's all in the future.
But at the pace right now Sokolov is playing, he's
he's abound to have his best season yet as a
North American hockey player, and it's it's all the better
suite since it's with Tucson.
Speaker 4 (06:44):
Yeah, he's a guy who was already a star in
Belleville for the junior Senators, but he came in, came
in the organization with that trade for young Unique, and
it's one of those interesting trades you have. We're to
star for a star and you kind of wonder how
they're going to fit in. Is he's going to have
like a big hit or anything. After the game, we
talked to Steve and he he said, he's a great
guy off the ice, really a team guy, really nice guy,
(07:06):
and he's really he came in, honestly with the Chiplin shoulder,
but he wanted to prove that, continue that streak and
prove that he's deserving of playing in the National Hockey
League and deserving him that call up. And he's already
shown tearing up the Western Conference now after doing so
well on the Eastern Conference over in Belleville.
Speaker 3 (07:24):
Let's get to our interviews, James, you're downstairs getting the
postgame interviews, asking a couple of guys the ordinary questions
that you're always asking.
Speaker 6 (07:33):
You know, I'm not saying they were ordinator.
Speaker 3 (07:34):
They're great questions, but you know it's always straight to
the point, which we always like to do. But yeah,
let's hear from Igor Sokoloff first on just his recent
play again the eight points in the six games to
start off his career as a Tucson Roadrunner.
Speaker 2 (07:49):
I usually have pretty slow starts, and it's a little
bit different for me right now. So you know, I'll
look good to just keep playing hockey and good things
are going to happen to me. So I'm not really
over thinking about goal an assists and stuff like that.
I usually just you know, try to play the game
and if I get an opportunity to bury one, I'll
bear it one.
Speaker 3 (08:05):
If I get the opportunity, i'll bury one, I'll bury one.
That's what he did on that overtime goal.
Speaker 4 (08:10):
Yeah, a couple, just a great, great shot and one
of those bombs that you you love to watch on
social media. And not only that he's scoring the goals,
getting the points and everything, but he also has great sales.
He's just fun to watch.
Speaker 3 (08:24):
Yeah, he has quite the one timer that he's already
scored a couple of times or at least tried a lot.
When the road Uners are on the power play and
you know, really like the that first power play unit
of Agazino Rattu. You have Sokolov on the blue line
kind of as that quarterback with Milos Kellman as well,
(08:47):
And honestly, Robbie Russo had a really good game tonight too.
He only had the one assist, but now he has
three points in six games. He just played a outstandingly
smart game. And then there's moments where he could have
easily panicked and Condors could have had a shorthanded chance
the other way. And I remember there's a moment where
(09:07):
there's two Condors collapsing on Rusto and he was the
only one as the road Unners were getting changes and
he was just able to easily pass it to a
guy getting onto the ice to start another offensive push
for for Tucson. And you know, some guys sometimes guys
like that fly under the radar and the kind of
game you have when you have socle Off scoring two
(09:28):
big goals and four goals over the weekend. But for
Robbie Rusto Man, he he silently had a phenomenal game
tonight for the road Runners as well. And he's really
fitting right back in after being back with the road Runners,
after spending some seasons with the Chicago Wolves and winning
the Calder Cup with them, and then some more seasons
with the Utica Comments and now he's back in Tucson.
Speaker 4 (09:52):
It's a nice to have him back for he's one
of those guys that kind of didn final the radar,
But if he hadn't been with the Roads, he may
not have noticed him his signing. But he's really a
great veteran presence and he's showing well so far and
in his return to Tucson.
Speaker 3 (10:10):
Yeah, it's been quite the return to him for I mean, sorry,
quite the return for him to come back to the
road Runners now at three points in six games and
part of that quarterback unit, of that main power play
says a lot of the trust that the coaching staff
puts in Robbie Russo to help the road Runners score
in those crucial power plays. Going back to Igor Sokoloff, James,
(10:32):
you had another good question just talking about playing in
the West now, you know, and we're used to our
guys and off season acquisitions kind of staying in the West,
like we're used to guys bouncing along the Pacific Division,
and it kind of happened with Andre Gazino playing with
San Jose, going to San Diego and now coming to
(10:52):
the road Runners, staying with Kevin Canna and spent some
years with the Ontario Rain and now he's he's with
the road Runners. Even last season and when we got
Hunter Drew and Matthew Blalta, they came from the Pacific
Division teams as well. But now things have changed a lot.
Of course getting Robbie Russo from Utica, but also Igor
on that trade. But then he signed the one year
(11:13):
deal because he did want to come here to the
road Runs. He didn't want to come to this organization
for new opportunity. And you asked him a good question,
just what's it like now playing I guess winstered teams.
I caught up with them on the Rovers Happy our
show a couple of weeks ago, if you fans want to.
Speaker 6 (11:28):
Listen to it Tucson Rovers dot com slast Happy Hour.
Speaker 3 (11:31):
But anyways, yeah, ask him about just you know, what
are you excited about playing in this division, playing on
the West now, you know, going to cities that you
haven't gone to yet, and uh, you know, obviously he's
gonna find out how tough it is, but obviously he's
capable of helping the team get wins here.
Speaker 4 (11:48):
Yeah, it's a lot different for I was pulled. I'm
scheduled for this here there. The first game was at
Rochester and then that Syracuse and then they hosted Utica
and then they hosted Syracuse for those But in this
division may be a series. But the change for moving
over to the Pacific Division is that you play those
(12:09):
two two two teams plays two games against the same team.
And so he talked about it being a very feels
like a little playoff series and that that's something that
we talked about last year that it really feels like
it kind of prepares the teams for the teams in
the Pacific Division for a playoff run because you're playing
(12:30):
the same team. You know, you have to recover, you
have to become playing playing back to back instead of
playing Province one night and in syrahcute and then the
ball and then alternating like that. But you go and
not only that, but you travel. They you know, they
go on the bus and they go to southern California
or Nevada, or they fly out to Abbotsford or so
it's it's a lot of different it's a lot of
different situations than than he was in over and in
(12:53):
the Atlantic.
Speaker 6 (12:54):
Yeah, it really is.
Speaker 3 (12:54):
And you know, I don't think you can I mean,
obviously with playoff experience it would help, but I don't
think you can kind of teach guys on the mentality
of playing the same team constantly, at least throughout the
regular season. And so Kolov and I would say Robbi
Russ was not new to him, He's been in the
league longer, but definitely a new thing for Sokolov and James.
You asked him that question about playing in the West.
(13:15):
So here's igor playing against the first couple of Western
opponents within the first six games of the season.
Speaker 2 (13:22):
Oh yeah, it's it's like kind of like you'd play
every weekend like a mini series. I would say, Yeah,
we had more spread games. You know, we played Wednesday, Friday, Saturday,
and we would play all three different teams some night.
So it's a little bit of adjustment. It's definitely much
harder to play back to back games against the same team,
you know. It's yeah, it's like a mini playoff series.
I would say, it's pretty interesting. It's a new experience
for me, So I'm glad, I'm enjoying it.
Speaker 3 (13:46):
So James, I talked to Steve Potvin, you know before
each game with our usual meetup for roadrunners pregame and
kind of just you know, told him, asked him about
the game on Friday night for the pregame show on Saturday,
just you know, kind of battling the demons again with
that three to one lead, uh, you know, blown three
one lead again for the third straight game, and ask
(14:08):
them about that, you know, you guys kind of how
they fought them off a bit, and uh, Steve said,
they they don't really see it as demons. They kind
of see it in the situation of our boys. We're
in this moment again, like let's let's do it. Let's
get a win this time. Let's not a fall under
pressure like you know, and that's why we were able
to win that that first game because you know it
have it just felt like it happened.
Speaker 6 (14:29):
He gets like, oh boy, here we go.
Speaker 3 (14:31):
But luckily tousone was able to score those two goals late,
both from Igor soko Off to eventually win it and
then getting the sweep tonight in the overtime win.
Speaker 6 (14:41):
But yeah, Steve and Steve Poffin and the.
Speaker 3 (14:43):
Coaching staff definitely had a lot of work to do
this past week to you know, get the guys ready
for a tough matchup with Bakersfield, because you know, those
games again were winnable against Texas, and the team start
facing early adversity. And that's what Steve said too, like
you're not playing hockey if you're not facing adversity. And
I think the guys just did a great job in
kind of silencing that, I guess and going out there
(15:04):
and performing.
Speaker 4 (15:05):
Yeah, he when we talked about that, he's a very
if you ever talk, he's very positive coach. And so
they their outlook on that is they look at that
as an opportunity to build on that and get better.
I mean, you look at how they started this series.
I mean we keep talking about how the end, and
obviously that's the focus, but I mean started the series
with because you know, getting that first goal and what
(15:28):
was the twenty seconds in and you kind of you
kind of saw they're going to make a statement that
this is not gonna be like last week or I
guess last series, because that was still the same week.
Speaker 5 (15:37):
Quick turnaround.
Speaker 6 (15:38):
Last week it was a quick turnaround.
Speaker 3 (15:40):
Yeah, it was a quick turnaround for two Sunday at
that game on Sunday and then you know, just a
couple of days for practice, a lot of hard working practices,
and then had the game on Friday and Saturday, we
have another quick turnaround for next week with the run
Runners heading to Abbotsford. If you folks are listening on
the on this Lazy Sunday as James and I recording
(16:02):
right after the game here at the Tucson area. But
if you're listening on the Lazy Sunday, we bust out
to Phoenix on Monday, slash tomorrow, and we fly out
to Vancouver and then busts on to Abbotsford for two
quick games and then the guys get that nice little
bye week weekend. I would say to close out November,
and part of me close out October and head on
(16:24):
to November. But James, yeah, you asked your usual questions
for Steve. Potvin started off, what did you think of
the series?
Speaker 7 (16:33):
Oh, listen, it was a hard series. I don't think
it was an easy one by any stretch, and I
don't think we'd imagine it any other way. Honestly, I
was proud of our guys. You know, it's a big
bounce back weekend for us. You know, he just shows
how committed the guys are and what it meant to
him to show well here at home.
Speaker 3 (16:55):
So James, yeah, I asked your usual question, what did
you think of the series? How did that feel to
just be down there with Steve after our first home
wins of the year.
Speaker 4 (17:03):
It's they were happy, excited, but it wasn't It didn't
feel like it was like a huge like celebration like
compared last weekend. They were down, but they were they
realized that they just cleaned up a few things and
they turned they could turn those wins and those close
losses and the wins like they did this this weekend.
Speaker 3 (17:22):
Yeah, it's always tough to lose the close games, and
Rummers had a couple of those last week and they
had more of their close games this week this past weekend,
which were really accustomed to, especially with the teams like
the Condors that the Roadrunners have to play, and Tucson
was two and six against the Condors last year. Uh,
it was the only team that we played that we
(17:43):
had a losing record against. And then starting twenty four
to twenty five, we get the sweep against him, so
kind of obviously it's early in the year, but it's
nice revenge.
Speaker 6 (17:51):
It's a nice new pace of play.
Speaker 3 (17:53):
Obviously it's two very different teams, but uh, you know,
no matter what happens, or I would say, no matter
how new the teams are, you're always going to have
that kind of bitter taste against a team that dominated
you last year. And you also asked Steve Povin just
on sweeping the Condors overall.
Speaker 5 (18:11):
Well, it's really important.
Speaker 7 (18:13):
Obviously they had a number definitely last season, and you
know what, we don't put a whole lot of stock
into that. You know, even last season, we didn't put
a whole lot of stock into it. We just always
tried to live in the moment and be prepared for
our next challenge. But it's definitely it feels good to
be able to come out on top this weekend, there's
no doubt.
Speaker 4 (18:33):
And what do you think about the schedule, the quick
turn around, the abbitspord and then like by week almost through, Yeah.
Speaker 7 (18:38):
It's an interesting week. We've never dealt with nine days
off here in Tucson, so you know, we'll have to
get creative with what we do during that week. And
you know, we got to find ways to make it
challenging and make it a bonding type of week, and
we've got to find ways to make it light, fun, competitive,
so it'll be it'll be an interesting one. But listen,
(19:01):
the quick turnarounds are are you know what the guys enjoyed.
They like to play games, so it shouldn't be much
of a challenge.
Speaker 3 (19:10):
Well, James, I I conclude the other question there about
the bye weeknd the quick turnarounds, and yeah, that's it's
a good point. I mean, these guys literally bleed to
play hockey. They're born to play hockey. We're born here
to deliver you folks back at home insider podcasts after
the game. You know, we're we're we're made to be here,
no matter if you're uh, you know, regular staff social
(19:34):
media of Bennett who's right in front of me, pr
Guy Case to the left of me, as well as
they're wrapping things up here up in the press box.
But you know, we love this sport and we you know,
obviously the hard work is hard work, but it pays
off at the end, and you know, there's no other
place I'd rather be right now.
Speaker 4 (19:53):
You kind of think it might kind of wear on
the guys in the sense that they do like to
play games that they're practicing or I'm doing whatever. But
one of the things that I remember the year before
last year when they had the preseason game in Henderson
and then they opened the season at Henderson, so they
just stayed in Las Vegas for that week and so
that that was fun kind of vacation thing. But it's
also Steve at the time, he said that was really
(20:15):
important for bonding, and he's talking about that now this time.
So it could be a really good situation for them
to you know, you talk about bye weeks in football,
how that's really help help you overcome injuries and whatnot.
So it's it's kind of unusual in a winter sport
like hockey, but to have a quot quote unquot bye week.
But I think you could end up being a good
situation for them because they're you know, you talked about
(20:37):
them bonding and kind of getting to know each other better,
and that's one thing that they do have a lot
of still a lot of the new faces. They've been
playing together now for a while now, for like a
month now, but they're they're still new to each other
and they're still still getting to know each other.
Speaker 5 (20:50):
So I think it's gonna be positive.
Speaker 3 (20:52):
Yeah, I think the getting the first sweep of this
twenty four to twenty five team also kind of helps
the guys get kind of bonded together. They you know,
we we have guys who are coming to this organization
who haven't been on teams that have won them much recently.
You know, won't say any names for past teams, but
you know this team is going to win games. And yeah,
(21:12):
they had the one and three start, but they got
to sweep over this weekend and are now to back
to three and three and they go against an abbits
for team coming off a loss against the San Diego Goals.
Ospbagansky also had a big weekend, had an assist on
Friday Night's victory. I thought he maybe should have gone
that other assist, not because he touched the puck, but
mainly because I laid out a big hit on on
(21:34):
Peterson and created kind of a puck exchange for the
road Runners to gain possession and they were able to
score a goal in that crucial Friday night victory. But yeah,
always good for the captain to lead the charge, to
lead as weep for the team. And you also asked
Osbagansky on just the overall sweep over the Condors this weekend.
Speaker 8 (21:53):
No, that was huge.
Speaker 9 (21:54):
I think we learned a lot of a lot about
our team here this weekend's it's a good team over
there with Baker's Field. Then to get two wins against
a really good team in Australia this season, it shows
a lot about our ability to close. We struggle without
the first couple weekends, so to be able to finish
two games here it's really important for us.
Speaker 3 (22:12):
All right, James, Well, we have our first Insider podcast
reaction win of the year, so you probably know what
that means. Folks listening back, I hope probably knows what
that means. The I have a question from Bradford Kurner,
our ring cyber reporter for Saturday Nights game Saturday Nights
Victory did his usual Hey, I have a question after
(22:37):
the game, ask the Stephen Popvin and Igors Sokloff his
question of the night, and we'll start off with Let's
start with Igors. We's off with Egors first, Brad Corner
for postgame doing his now twenty four to twenty five.
Speaker 6 (22:51):
Hey, I have a question. I got one question for you.
What's your Halloween costume this year?
Speaker 2 (22:56):
Honestly, my wife's not here, so I gotta figure it
out because usually she she figures out for me. So yeah,
we'll see.
Speaker 5 (23:02):
We'll see on instagram.
Speaker 6 (23:04):
Awesome you, we'll see on instagram.
Speaker 3 (23:07):
James, are you do you have any Halloween costume ideas?
Speaker 6 (23:10):
Uh for this year?
Speaker 5 (23:12):
From here?
Speaker 6 (23:13):
Yeah? For you? I mean like, are you gonna wear anything?
Speaker 4 (23:15):
I was gonna be you know, I was really into
Deadpool will Rain, so I wanted to come do that,
but I'd be kind of obvious to be actually dead
Pool will Rain. I'm gonna be a TVA agent, not
a full thing. I have a tv A shirt and.
Speaker 6 (23:25):
Ever Okay, I do think so do that, but that's
a new one TVA agent.
Speaker 5 (23:30):
Yeah, the what's called Time Variance Authority.
Speaker 6 (23:32):
So yeah, right, yeah, that's gonna be awesome.
Speaker 4 (23:35):
They were they were kind of the bad guys in
that show and I mean that movie and then they
were in the LOOKI show, so.
Speaker 5 (23:40):
That yeah, that would be cool.
Speaker 3 (23:42):
I love Yeah, I love the kind of tv A
story storyline.
Speaker 6 (23:46):
I'm being a Narwal.
Speaker 3 (23:47):
I have a narwhal onesie that I'll be where going
to Scottsdale for the Hollow weekend, have my best friends
uh visiting me, and then coming back to Tucson on Saturday.
So I'm gonna show them Tucson for the first time,
So yeah, it should be a pretty fun, hollow weekend.
Brad also asked Steve the same question to see what
costume he is going to wear for this Halloween season.
Speaker 8 (24:11):
I've got one question for you.
Speaker 6 (24:13):
Yep, they're back, they're back.
Speaker 8 (24:16):
Are you dressing up for Halloween this year?
Speaker 7 (24:17):
There's no chance if you were to dress.
Speaker 6 (24:20):
Up, what would you be dressing.
Speaker 8 (24:21):
Up as this year?
Speaker 7 (24:21):
You're wearing that suit, you'd be.
Speaker 8 (24:23):
Dressing up as me. I asked them one question.
Speaker 6 (24:26):
That's one question.
Speaker 3 (24:28):
I like how Steve kind of knew that that it
was coming back, and then I wanted to be Brad
Brad for Halloween with that orange suit that he wears
throughout the season.
Speaker 5 (24:38):
Yeah, if you missed the game, shame o. You was
a great game.
Speaker 6 (24:41):
But if we did, shame on you. Come to guard games. Guys.
Come on, you missed some good ones over the weekend.
Speaker 4 (24:47):
Yeah, and he didn't see him do the on Nice interview,
which which is cool. Brad is wearing his Tratis suit
and he's wearing the umbolo tie and I I hadn't
seen it before, but now he's a belt bucklets, says Brad.
So he's probably easily the most stylish on the staff.
Up that not not that you guys don't dress well, but.
Speaker 3 (25:04):
No, yes, he is. I'll definitely give you that. He
is definitely the most stylish. We all try to look
as nice as possible, but Brad is always the one
looking the most nice. All right, James, Let's talk about
our goaltenders, Jackson Stauburn Matthew Volalta, each getting wins a
pair of wins over the weekend, Matthew Volalta having a
kind of the bigger game of the two, I guess
(25:25):
I would say, even though both of them had huge victories.
But for Matthew Volalta, he had to make thirty nine
saves on forty two shots on Friday's victory, and again
it was just one of those moments where the condors
erased that three to one lead once again. But you know,
if it wasn't for Maddie, could have been a lot worse.
And he did his job to get his first win
(25:46):
as a Roadrunner, oh sorry, first win of his twenty
four to twenty five campaign with the Roadrunners.
Speaker 4 (25:52):
He came up with the third star of the night
and he it's back to the matt worries too. I
mean again that those first few games for a couple
of games then he was still still doing well, but
the stats weren't really there as as much as we're
used to.
Speaker 5 (26:07):
But he was back there making those really.
Speaker 4 (26:08):
Big saves and facing a barrage of shots and coming
up big for the Roadrunners.
Speaker 6 (26:13):
Yeah, he really did.
Speaker 3 (26:14):
Also coming up big for the Roadrunners was Jackson Stobber
earning his second victory as a Roadrunner, making twenty four
saves on twenty six shots. And James I was saying
during the broadcast, you know when you have a you
have three goals in the first period, and you're thinking, like,
you know, I won't a typical HL game, but you
kind of expect the scoring to be a bit higher
(26:36):
with the Roadrunner scoring two unanswered after Bakerfield Bakerfield's first
goal of the night, but throughout that entire second period
it was a two to one game, and it was
primarily because Stobber. He didn't face a lot of shots
in that second period. He faced nine, but that second
period he just made really really strong saves and that goal.
The style of goaltending that he plays just kind of
(26:57):
doesn't have to move too much he's and I'm not.
It's not because he's huge, he's just he's great at
getting from point A to point B and not kind
of panicking in those situations. And we saw a lot
of it tonight. We saw a lot of point blank
chances from the condors, especially one on on the right
side of the of the rink if you're facing from
the press box on Bergland. Bergland was right in front
(27:18):
between the circles and Stobber made a really, really nice save.
And yeah, it's it's nice to see the goaltending duo
of Stabur and Volozza really come together this weekend.
Speaker 4 (27:29):
Yeah, Jackson, he gave up two goals, but there were
goals that they came after they kind of broke through
like a siege, you know, kind of you know when
the I've been watching a lot of Game Throne type
stuff lately.
Speaker 6 (27:41):
I love Game of Thrones, good stuff.
Speaker 4 (27:43):
It's like they trying to do a siege, and they
finally broke through when the with the backdoor goal. A
couple of power play goals he gave up, but then
you saw that it was a third period where they
they tried to sneak back door sneak one back to
the back door, but he went back really fast and
stopped it. So he was able to recover and prove
that little little air, that little kind of little efficiency
(28:05):
he had at least early on with those two goals,
with those two power play goals that were on the
back door, he was able to fix that.
Speaker 3 (28:13):
Yeah, and yeah, I thought the defense played great in
front of him. You know, Jackson Stabber was kind of
getting barraged by shots the first few games of the year.
Fase thirty five on his first start back on October twelfth,
second start, which came last weekend, he made forty one
saves on the forty five shots, and then this weekend
(28:34):
only faced twenty six. And you know, that's one of
the things that roadrunners need to improve on, and the
is the allowing of the shots. Because just last night
Matthew Will also had to make thirty nine on forty two.
And of course we have the goaltenders to stop that
big barrage of shots, but at the end of the day,
you don't want your goaltenders to have to be facing
that many shots. But yeah, so far, Stober starting off
(28:56):
his first three games as a road Runner at a
two one one record at two point six to five
goals against average and nine twenty five say percentage Vallalts
on the other side three point seven to two with
an eight nine to two say percentage.
Speaker 6 (29:10):
Expect to go down again.
Speaker 3 (29:11):
It's only the first few games of the season and
his first two starts kind of got a shelved a
little bit. But you know again, Maddy had a great
game on Friday night, thirty nine on forty two. Stopper
had a great night Saturday, stopping twenty four on twenty six,
and the road Runners goaltenders really showed up this past
(29:32):
weekend against the Bakers Swoot Condors to get the sweeps. James,
let's look at the let's look at the league standings.
We always like to look at the standings a bit
and peek at them throughout the first couple of games
of the season. We have a couple of teams that
have played more games than the Roadrunners, a couple that
played less. But so far, Calgary off to a hot
(29:53):
start once again at six to one, and I think
the big surprise here Santos a Barracudar five and one
to start off the first six games of the year.
Speaker 4 (30:01):
Yeah, the Santose had been down obviously less recently. But
with this division, and with how you know, how nice,
you know, how nice it is to live in California,
are living, never had to live in Arizona, You're gonna
expect a lot of guys to come in the division,
and so you're not gonna expect a team to be
down for that long. And so you see San Jose
back up there, back up near the top of the
(30:21):
standings up there with there are a couple points back
of Calgary, but Calgary does have a game in hand,
so they're right up there.
Speaker 3 (30:29):
Yeah, And San Jose was one of those teams that
had a pretty good off season with the big acquisition
of Jogoslava scare Off, who is four and oh to
start the year with a one point two five goals
against average and nine fifty four save percentage. He was
an All Star with the Milwaukee Admirals last season with
(30:51):
two thirty nine goals against average and I love it
save percentage. He requested the trade just for not getting
the proper playing time, and he was traded to the
San Jose Sharks organization. He was sent back down, but uh,
you know, for his sake, it's a good start for him.
And uh, it's a good start for the Verracuda, who
went out and got a lot of talent, you know,
(31:12):
three way contract wise and free agency wise as well,
such as guys like Andrew Pouldrowski who's been around for
to the at least the HL specific division for quite
some time. And Colin Graf is off to a great
start for San Jose with nine points in six games
as well. And yeah, it's just one of those teams
(31:33):
you don't really uh you you're not used to seeing
on top of the division like this, And again it's
only the first few games of the season, but we
always like to take a peak. Roadrunners are now at
fifth in division with their three and three record. They
dropped Bakersfield to two one two and one, which is
a weird record, but heck of hockey. Colorado's at two
(31:55):
to two, zero to one, Coachella Valley at two and two,
San Diego at two and four, Ontario ran I one
to three, and then Henderson is one in five, and
then the team the Rubbers are playing next week in
the third place spot, the Abbots for Canucks at three
to two oh one. Abbotsford a team the Ruvers went
two and two against last season, splitting at home and
(32:15):
on the road, and team the Rovers didn't necessarily play
a lot last year, but at this time they got
eight games toll against the Canucks and it all starts
this week.
Speaker 4 (32:24):
Yeah, they're kind of changing the rotation this year for
the schedule. We're as supposed to play in the Southwestern
favorite schedule. They're playing the colder schedule with playing Calgary
twice as much and abbits for twice as much and
Colorado twice as much. So it's gonna be gonna be
tough and the Runners to not only have to go
on that trip, but play some tough teams. I mean,
Calgary's right now in first place, Habits for it's in
(32:47):
third place, so and then we saw good Colorado was.
So it's gonna be tough to switch that schedule like that.
Speaker 3 (32:53):
Yeah, it is, you know again, it's it's sometimes it's
good for a team to play against the team maybe
they don't necessarily know too much about. But I'm excited.
I've never been to Canada before and we head over
there tomorrow, so I'm a pretty thrilled for that. I've
never been to Abbotsford I've never been to the arena,
so obviously I don't know what to expect, but uh, yeah,
(33:14):
those are It's gonna be a good trip for the guys. Uh,
we play the two games there, hopefully get some more wins,
and then have a well deserved weekend off to you know,
bond and just take some downtime. You know, as much
as these guys again, we love we love the hockey games,
we love being here, we love all the work we
put into it. But it's also nice to get some
(33:35):
downtime and kind of socialize it and get to know
your teammates a little bit more.
Speaker 6 (33:39):
As again, it's a it's a pretty.
Speaker 3 (33:41):
New team still and the these guys are still getting
to know each other now at three and three on
the season, after their sweep over the Condors. All right, James,
before we get out of here, Uh, you recommended a
draft that we should do, and uh, if we're gonna
do an overreaction inside our podcast, draft por our first
one ever. As we've been doing the drafts over the summer,
(34:03):
we've been doing them on the Roadrunners Happy Hour show.
But you had a good recommendation here. You got all
the pictures together and we're gonna try drafting our favorite
Roadrunner jerseys, so jerseys before I even joined the organization
as well. So I'm gonna try my best to explain these,
but yeah, we'll do. Gosh, how many are their total? One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen. Okay,
(34:27):
so we're gonna do. We're gonna choose five each, so
we usually do our drafts. Since you've got the topic
all set, I'm gonna let you go first. So, James,
what was your all time favorite Runners jersey? What?
Speaker 4 (34:37):
It's hard to pick because they've they've had so many bangers.
Speaker 6 (34:40):
Ye, they have, they really have.
Speaker 4 (34:42):
There's no And I thought for this we should also
include the warm up jerseys because if you look at
them like I didn't, I didn't go to the I
wasn't able. I was working for covering something else for
the Star for when they had the Beach Night. But
I remember going to practice a little after that when
they're auctioning and off and it had the numbers sown
on and the picture that I found for the for
(35:03):
the Beach Night jersey. It even has the fight straps.
So it's so so to me. The the practice jerseys
and I'm the warm up jerseys. They're their fair game.
So anyway, having said that, I think for a first pick,
I'm gonna go with the fifth season jersey that the
un said. It's a nice mix of the the red
of the primary jerseys and the purple of the Katina
(35:25):
jerseys and with the with the cool tan in the
middle and in the cool five five year logo. It
was the fifth fifth season logo originally, and then they
changed it to be the fifth anniversary logo too because
it was twenty sixteen to twenty twenty one, but that
twenty twenty one season, not even twenty twenty twenty one season,
but the twenty twenty one season was cut short because
of COVID and you couldn't you know, fans couldn't go
(35:48):
to much of it, so there's limits on that. So
they decided the extend to the next season, so making
not only fifth fifth season jersey, but fifth aniversary jerseys.
So that to me is cool, nice mix some of
the cool different identities with the and as the purple
on the bottom with the the cool undesigned that they
have in the Katina jerseys.
Speaker 6 (36:08):
And they wore that as a warm up only. Is
that what you were saying?
Speaker 4 (36:11):
No, I mean I was just saying that for the draft, like,
oh okay.
Speaker 5 (36:15):
Sat Patrick State jerseys and stuff like that, right right, Okay.
Speaker 6 (36:17):
I thought I was like, why would they do a
fifth year for a warm up? All right?
Speaker 3 (36:21):
So first one for me is uh not a warm
up jersey, but this was. I think I'm just gonna
pick this one just because it was a really fun
night as well. Uh, I'm gonna go with the Phoenix
Roadrunner throwback that we wore for Throwback night when we
had the Coyotes legends including Shane Doan uh play our
u of a hockey team before the game and we
(36:44):
went out with, uh these bad boys.
Speaker 6 (36:46):
Did we play the Condors that game? I think we did.
I think we did, and they probably beat us like
they always did. Anyways.
Speaker 3 (36:52):
Uh, I liked them because I personally love this the
the blue and gold because you know, San Jose Stata
reminds me of h and it just kind of went
back in time to the early days of like Mier
League hockey and all of that. So and the logo,
I mean, it's just so classic. It's such a classy
looking photo. It's cool looking at like an old version
of of Dusty and it was also just a really
(37:14):
a fun night. So yeah, I'm gonna go with the
throwback jerseys for the road Runners to the Phoenix Roadrunners.
Speaker 4 (37:21):
Cool and so for me with the second one, I
probably go with the the blue Air Force kind of
logo for the one of the military appreciation nights, the
one where they had the Dusty in the middle with
the it's not the air Force simili apologize.
Speaker 5 (37:36):
I remember I looked it up once.
Speaker 4 (37:38):
It with the star and with the stripes that one,
and then they put I'm Dusty in the middle, and
so it's it's really cool, really cool looking, and it
has the cool kind of the it's always on field
off that kind of urban warrior kind of camouflage with
the with the gray that they do a lot with
it with the great camera. So that's a cool one
to me.
Speaker 3 (37:56):
Yeah, the military Appreciation night appreciation night jerseys are always
the best. And uh, we're gonna have our Military Appreciation
Night on November ninth, So if folks haven't gotten your
tickets for that yet, get those at TUSM rovers dot com.
Speaker 6 (38:08):
It's gonna be a great night.
Speaker 3 (38:09):
Rovers will be wearing their military Appreciation night jerseys, and uh,
that's just gonna be an overall great time. And I'll
be the first game in over like ten days for
the Roadrunners as well, so I.
Speaker 6 (38:22):
Know a lot of fans will be itching to get
back to hockey.
Speaker 5 (38:24):
All right.
Speaker 3 (38:25):
Next one, for me, I'm not gonna go with the
Kachinas because that's just a clear cut. So, I mean,
you can make that pick if you want, but I'm
just not going to I'm gonna keep it with like
the themes and stuff. I'm gonna go with the Beach
Night jerseys for my second. I Uh, there's a lot
of conflicting views on that jersey, I think just because
like it's you instantly get the turquoise with the red
(38:45):
and such and we will only worm for warm ups.
But I just like the theme because we had we
had a lot of uh you know, the Beach Night towels,
which I still have. We had the placards and everything,
and I just liked it. I like the color teal,
so beach Night jerseys for my second because it was
just very different.
Speaker 4 (39:02):
Yes, they go on night, and I didn't understand in
the sense that we don't have an ocean around.
Speaker 6 (39:07):
But yeah, I know, but we have a beach night.
Speaker 5 (39:09):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (39:10):
But everyone loves and everyone love those jerseys. So for me,
I think the next one, I'll probably just be safe
and go with the regular red home or the.
Speaker 5 (39:18):
Regular red jersey. Okay, that's a It was a classic.
Speaker 4 (39:21):
It's a great logo and I love the piping and
you see it, you see it around. I've seen people
on like YouTube talk about jerseys and they all like
that jersey. It's it's a very good design.
Speaker 6 (39:34):
It is a really good design, all right.
Speaker 3 (39:36):
Next one for me going with the recent one, the
new Alazo, the Tucson jerseys, the twenty four, twenty five ones.
I mean, you can't go wrong with any of the Alazos,
to be honest, but just something about the white and
the white with the with the cream on the side
is just a such.
Speaker 6 (39:52):
A good look.
Speaker 3 (39:53):
With the the easy logo as well with the Lazo
and then obviously it still has the city of Use
on patch as well, which I think does still compliment
the jersey, uh, you know, with the cactus on it
and such, and I love them.
Speaker 6 (40:07):
I love the white.
Speaker 3 (40:08):
I kind of like how we went from black to
red to now white and it's just something new.
Speaker 5 (40:12):
Yeah, it's a cool look.
Speaker 4 (40:13):
It's something that I was like, that's why we had
the we're doing this because I because they had that,
they wore those new jerseys on Friday.
Speaker 5 (40:20):
I was like, oh, we should do that.
Speaker 6 (40:21):
Yeah, yeah, definitely, it was.
Speaker 3 (40:22):
It was a great idea and uh, fun fact, James,
we didn't win a single game last year in the
Alazo and then now this year we won our first
game in Alaso because we had we were owing three
last season in Alazo jerseys.
Speaker 5 (40:34):
Interesting, I didn't I didn't realize that.
Speaker 6 (40:35):
Yeah, I mean, obviously I don't want to talk about
as much. I didn't want to.
Speaker 3 (40:38):
Bring it up anywhere, but uh got our first win
with the Alaso on Friday night, So it's a it's
a good jersey to get dubs it.
Speaker 4 (40:46):
And so I'm going to go with the black Katina
jerseys because everyone loves the Katina and not only people
from Arizona, but people from all over the country, all
over in North America. They love those. And to me,
you know a lot of people like the white one
because they're tradition with the characters head there. When they
had the white one as a home Home jersey in NHL.
They they wore that one a lot, so that's where
(41:08):
I think it's a lot of popularity for the white
one comes from.
Speaker 5 (41:10):
But to me, the black ones really cool, really perfect.
Speaker 4 (41:13):
Kind of it looks edgy but also looks cool and
cool design and everything.
Speaker 6 (41:16):
White ones were cool.
Speaker 3 (41:17):
I haven't seen them yet, you know, I know that
it's like they kind of like to make it a
two year, two year, two year on, two year off
thing with the Kachinas, But man, I feel like at
some point you just have to bring both of them
and just kind of rotate between those two jerseys. I
know you steers away from the classic reds and the whites,
which are all so awesome, but I think having like
(41:38):
four jerseys throughout the season would really kind of change
up the dynamic of the jerseys that you are wearing.
And again, I want to choose Kachinas on my draft
list because I think those are just givens. I do
want to go with like cool theme nights. This was
before I came with the organization, but I've seen these
jerseys around and it's the I believe these are military
(41:59):
appreciation nights. It's the cool digital camo with the tan
and the gray with the Roadrunners logo on top of it. Again,
I've seen them around and I just I wish I
had gotten to see him because I just love that look.
It's a sick look. It's just screams desert to me.
And it was, yeah, good job by the road Runs
on that one.
Speaker 5 (42:19):
Yeah, looks.
Speaker 4 (42:19):
They've had so many really good military appreciation jerseys because
usually it's like, Okay, well we'll put a flag on
our logo, ut, we'll drop some camo on the shirts.
But they really put a lot of thought thought into
them and they really look nice.
Speaker 6 (42:33):
So next one is this your last one?
Speaker 5 (42:35):
I don't remember one.
Speaker 3 (42:37):
Oh my gosh, let's see because yeah, fourth, Yeah, this
is the last one, last one.
Speaker 4 (42:42):
So I'm gonna go with the last year. So even
though they didn't do so well in the last year's
outlast the jerseys because I like the black ones. The
Black ones are cool, and then, like I said, the
White ones really cool. But to me, the the red
ones get the edge because they had the full logo
because it's al lasso and which is a lastso so
it has a lasto.
Speaker 5 (42:58):
I love the cool full full logo.
Speaker 4 (43:00):
I mean the the the new ones they have the
just the head of the Alasta, which is cool to
tap that variant, but I really like the he even
has like the piping is is the lasso and then
on the bottom of the jerseys the the stripe being
its mountains, so that's really cool.
Speaker 3 (43:16):
Yeah, it's a The last years Alazo jerseys were awesome
as well as wish we got more wins in them,
but you know, new jersey, new win, new situation.
Speaker 5 (43:26):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (43:27):
Last one for me, I'm gonna go with the Saint
Patrick's Day road around jerseys again, another warm up one.
But I think it just goes back to just the
the memory of working on Saint Patrick's Day for the game,
having those games or having that the game there and
winning that one as well against the Stars, and then
I remember I flew I think it was San jose
(43:50):
A somewhere the next morning at like five am, so
I got like two hours of sleep, and it's just
the memory standpoint there for my favorite jerseys. But yeah,
good job, James, nice draft, nice draft topic, anything else
you come up with. Please let me know anything you
fans come up with back at home if you want to,
if you want to give us any draft ideas, whether
it's for the Insider Podcast or Happy Our show with
(44:14):
Kim Koda Roblez, let us know and try to see if.
Speaker 6 (44:17):
We can get him out there.
Speaker 3 (44:18):
Because we drafted so many times, we're starting to run
out of ideas.
Speaker 5 (44:21):
Yeah, there's so many.
Speaker 4 (44:22):
This was originally an idea had it with the summer
if Adrian was like, oh, can't do the pod. But
then I didn't think I'd do so well on the
normal ones. But so I had this idea and then
I kind of just put on the back burner. And
then they came out with a new Alasso jerseys. Oh
it's a good time to do it.
Speaker 6 (44:39):
No, it was great.
Speaker 3 (44:40):
Yeah, new Alazo jerseys out. Reverends are now want to
know and they're twenty four to twenty five El Lazo jerseys.
They get the sweep over the weekend against the Condors
and now they travel on to Abbotsford for a couple
of midweek slates against the Canucks and then have the
