We got John Stamos. You would know him best probably
if you're me as Uncle Jesse from full House and
Fuller House. He was also before full House on General Hospital,
then er you big shot Palm Royal. He's also a
musician who still performs with the Beach Boys. He's been

on Broadway, and now he's joining season two of The
Hunting Wives, taking on a new role in a pretty
stat cast. So he's a TV eiconom music. I somehow
still doing all these new things. I'm gonna be honest
with you, guys, I was really looking forward to this,
and this met all expectations. It met them all and
exceeded them all. And the interview goes off the rail

A couple things. One just so I don't forget. I

So I got married, oh about five years ago, I
should know this, And I had Dan and Shaye that
the artists play at our wedding. They're friends of ours,
we love in Nashville, and they played Forever for us.
My wife and I first dance song was Dan and

Shase singing Forever. Oh wow, Yeah, I don't know. I
just felt like I needed to tell you that because
you're the guy.
Speaker 2 (01:52):

That's not a bad thing. I mean, you know it's
coming back.

They say, well, I always have short hair, and we
just had a baby like three months ago, and it's like,
why am I going to cut my hair? At this point,
I'm doing this show, I do my radio show, I
do this show on Netflix. They we're doing you and
I are doing, Like, what am I gonna do with
my hair? I'm just gonna let it grow. I've never
let it grow in my life.
Speaker 2 (02:40):
It looks really good, That's what I'm saying.
Speaker 3 (02:42):
But you made a mullet joke.
Speaker 2 (02:44):
What's the matter with the mullet? It made me famous.
I got no problems with the mullet.

Would that really be considered a mullet though?
Speaker 4 (02:50):
Oh yeah, because the house I had all and and
on General Hospital in Asco.
Speaker 3 (02:56):
Like I can picture the early days, but I didn't
know if that was because you had like full top
two though.
Speaker 2 (03:02):

Yeah, well run the back.
Speaker 2 (03:06):
I mean you're in Nashville, you should know this.
Speaker 3 (03:08):
No. I mean if I had a real mullet growing
up in Arkansas as a kid, but I had short
hair and then long hair in the back.
Speaker 2 (03:14):
Right, right, let's like, yeah, well, but I think it was.
I mean, people said it would have called me a mullet.
So but I think your hair looks really good, right, OK? Congratulations.
So this is your first or second.
Speaker 3 (03:25):
Baby, it's the first, first baby.
Speaker 2 (03:26):
It's the greatest. You're gonna love every.
Speaker 3 (03:28):
Minute of it, you know. For me, I think something
I've been pretty self conscious about is that I'm forty
six and we just had our first baby, and so
I feel like, oh, man, what if, like we have
this baby and I'm at school and all the parents
are like twenty three and I'm one hundred.
Speaker 2 (03:44):
Did you do any research on me? What age I
was when I had my first an only child?
Speaker 3 (03:49):
I know that you. I mean that was I'm older
than you, man. Yeah, but your kid's older now though, right,
like five or six years old.
Speaker 2 (03:56):
Way, I have one kid who's eight, okay, eight, but
I'm sixty two. I had him in my fifties, mid fifties.
You're in your forties.
Speaker 3 (04:02):
Is that yeah, forty six? Do you struggle with that
at all? Or did it not matter?
Speaker 2 (04:05):
No? I love it. I had it sober up, I was.
I've been sober like twelve years now, eleven and a
half two years. I don't think I could have handled
it before, but I always want you know, look, that
was always in the car. I mean, my dream since
as a kid was to be married and have you know,
a family and kids. That I just I think I
probably just got it in just the lid in the niked.
(04:26):
You know, I wouldn't have been a good probably a
good father, or a good husband until I had, you know,
straightened myself up. So but I know, I don't It
doesn't bother me at all. I don't care. I'm a
I mean, I feel like I'm a young dad. I
do everything with him.
Speaker 4 (04:40):
You know.
Speaker 2 (04:40):
We're at the beach right now. That's why I see
this crappy picture behind me. This is not my house.
But I feel like he gives me energy. You know,
I feel good.
Speaker 3 (04:49):
Any advice just show up.
Speaker 2 (04:52):
You know. I'm actually writing a book. I just started
writing it for It's it's a it's called When I
grew Up to be a Man, and it's about and
I'm just interviewing dad's boy dads and just learning from
them and trying to figure out how to raise a
good boy in this environment of you know, the manisphere,

and you know, and just growing up to respect women
and still be strong and be sensitive and be empathetic.
And somehow my kids in that going in that direction,
which is good.
Speaker 3 (05:23):
I got a soft topic here for a second. Again.
We played Forever at the wedding. Okay, now that's on me.
That's on me, And that was like my wife's favorite
song that you get that you played on Full House.
I also loved it. I also loved like the dentist
version you know, from the Beach Boys way back in
the day, Like I loved all the versions, and so

that's a real, real special moment for us. But thanks
to Jesse and.
Speaker 2 (05:47):
The Rippers, you got it. It's so funny because I
just really did that recently with these guys who do
the sing in the kitchen. I don't know if you
if you're up to that, and I just sing with him.
I get get. I'd like to look at my dms
because I'll look for, you know, people that I could
help out. Sometimes I'll send videos to you know, special
needs kids or whatever it is. But I'd say six
(06:10):
out of ten dms that I get are asking me
to sing that song at.
Speaker 4 (06:13):
Their wedding, Like, oh could you it's this date and
at four o'clock.
Speaker 2 (06:18):
Could you be like, sure, but it's flattering. It does
make a really beautiful wedding song.
Speaker 3 (06:25):
I think, why did you pick that song for the show.
Speaker 2 (06:28):
You know, it was one of those underrated Beach Boys songs.
People didn't know it. I know, Dennis loved it, and so,
you know, I felt like I could maybe do it
just I mean, I didn't know that it was going
to sort of take off and be people's weddings. I'm
sure Dennis is smiling, you know, wherever he is about
the fact that this song, you know, got into the
(06:48):
ether of the world and people, you know, got him
to it because it was kind of a sleeper song
on Sunflower.
Speaker 3 (06:55):
I think, you know, one of the trips that I
took when I first started to have some success because
I never traveled ever growing up small town in Arkansas.
But when I had some money, I went to Japan.
And the only reason I went to Japan, and I
went by myself was because that's where Jesse and the
Rippers were famous. That's literally because I just found like
six places from television, Like I went to Hawaii because

of the Brady Bunch. I went to London because of
friends and I went to Japan because Jesse and the
Rippers got famous in Japan.
Speaker 2 (07:24):
So funny. So what's your story. You grew up in Arkansas?
If you did? You start off as a DJ and
podcast the podcast world and all that.
Speaker 3 (07:31):
I grew up in a town of like six hundred people,
seven hundred people and then have done radio and television.
And you did competition shows on American Idol for like
four years, but just doing the radio show and then
I do this show for Netflix now.
Speaker 2 (07:45):
But oh, you were the guy in America like an
announcer kind of sort of.
Speaker 3 (07:50):
I was on four years whenever Ryan first got the
Ryan got the job in New York doing Ryan and Kelly.
They needed somebody to be in LA to in case
he couldn't get back. So I was like the full
time mentored all the contestants on camera for four years.
And then Ryan got sick once and I filled in.
But I did that for four years.
Speaker 2 (08:08):
So you're a singer, like trade down.
Speaker 3 (08:11):
I do comedy music. I'm not like you.
Speaker 2 (08:13):
I'm a terrible singer.
Speaker 4 (08:15):
But wait you you so you were just you were
mentoring these kids, but you couldn't really sing well.
Speaker 3 (08:21):
When I got brought in. It was because I do
a bunch of media and I do comedy, and but
then I come from like Trailer Park, and so a
lot of these kids come from where I come from,
and so it was that. But I've also been in
music for so many years, and so that job turned
from one episode into four years.
Speaker 2 (08:39):
Wow, that's cool. I'm so I should have done more research.
I'm sorry. I thought we'd met before. Yes we haven't,
because you said nice to meet you.
Speaker 3 (08:47):
Yeah, but I never said you never say what nice
to meet you? Always say good good to see you?
Speaker 2 (08:52):
Because I'm afraid you said nice to meet you. Can
we roll that back?
Speaker 3 (08:55):
No? No, I said it to you because I knew
I've never met you, because you're a long lost hero.
Speaker 2 (09:00):
I thought that. I I thought that I met you before.
So you did comedy and did you know Sagit?
Speaker 3 (09:08):
I did not. I met him once. He did. I
did an interview with him a long time ago, and
I found them to be delightfully funny. And then and
then I think, now everybody knows, this is a long
time ago. And then I went to a show and
I was like, what is happening? I don't even know
what's happening right now.
Speaker 2 (09:24):
He was dirty, he.
Speaker 3 (09:24):
Was extreme, and you guys stayed close, right.
Speaker 4 (09:28):
Yes, we didn't start off close, you know. He both
him and Dave came from and I loved comics.
Speaker 2 (09:34):
I still do. I love stand up comedy. I'm obsessed
with stand up comedy. I try to befriend any great
comic out there. I can't do it, but I'm fascinated
by the structure, how you guys you know, constructed joke,
the science, the math behind the economy of words. I
just them fascinated by it. So getting to work with
those guys was, you know, was incredible from that standpoint.
(09:54):
But all they really cared about was making like the
crew laugh, you know. And I was like, I was
coming from I just did a show with Jack Klugman,
who's a famous sitcom guy, and so I was, you know,
coming to it with more of an actor's point of
view of these scenes and trying to work these scenes,
and the guys were just trying to make the guys,
you know, the crew laugh and whatever that was about.
It was it was especially Bob, and it was it
(10:15):
was distracting for a lot of it, and we didn't
get along at all for the first couple of years,
and then I think it was maybe the third or
third year for fourth something like that season, Bob's sister
got Sclara Dermot, which he spent the rest of his
life advocating raising money for this horrific disease. Dave's sister
(10:36):
got cancer, and my sister had diagnosed with a brain tumor.
And so all of a sudden, we weren't three guys
on a show with three brothers grieving, you know, our sisters.
And sadly, Bob and Dave lost their sister, and my
sister made it. She had turned out to be just
she had MS instead of I mean in a brain turber.
So we came really close then, and then we just
(10:59):
started to you know, realized that there was a lot
to learn from each other, I think, and I had
a lot to learn. I learned a lot from those guys.
But then Bob just we just ended up being best friends.
And then we were just there for each other through
every you know, all the ups and downs of live
divorces and marriages, and but I just loved him so dearly,
and it was such a tragic loss. Just one day,
(11:21):
just in a blink of an eye, he was gone,
and he was such a he was bombastic with his
bombastic with his love like he you know, he was
He would text you fifty times a day and then
call you twenty times to make sure that you got
the text, and then leave messaging. You know, he was
that kind of guy, and you know, just losing him
has been a real you know, life has just been
(11:43):
just a little not as funny, you.
Speaker 3 (11:46):
Know whenever he joined that show, because I've seen the
pilot and it wasn't him. Was that awkward for you
guys when they switched out that character.
Speaker 2 (11:57):
That's a good question. I I think I felt bad
for the guy. But it wasn't like we didn't know
the show was going to be and the show wasn't
hit like for the first season. It wasn't like, oh,
that guy's really losing out on something. We were just
shooting a pilot and we didn't really know what we had,
and I think, you know, the chemistry of the show
is something that you can't I think the show. I
(12:17):
don't know if the show would have been the same
with the original guy, obviously, but I was a little
I was a little weird, you know, it was a
little weird I think I was more pissed that I
had to go back and reshoot those scenes the show.
The show itself was like, you know, I was coming
off of you know, General Hospital, and I worked with
Jack Klugman, and I was doing some sophisticated, more sophisticated coming.
(12:41):
I always wanted to be on a show like Happy
Days and Bernie Shirley and working men like Gary Marshall shows,
and really, in the beginning, really wasn't that for me.
And it took me a while to sort of settle in,
and it took the studio. The show was going to
be canceled about halfway through, and our writer producer Chip Franklin,
took a scene to the network and it was a
(13:02):
scene with Michelle and I and David was in it too.
I think we were trying to give her medicine. I
didn't do this thing, and it was this chemistry between
Michelle and Jesse and they were like that that's what
we want, that we want the show to be that.
So we started writing towards that and it picked up
a little bit in the ratings. But the truth is
(13:23):
that they put us on in the summer after Who's
the Boss and Whose Boss was a big hit with
Tony Danza, and that in turn sort of gave us
the audience, and then they came back the second season.
I watched us. Coincidentally, years earlier, I caught my first girlfriend,
who was madly in love in bed with Tony Danzer.
So somehow is that right? It's the true story? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (13:50):
No way, Yeah, who's who's her house? Your house was
her house?
Speaker 2 (13:55):
Yeah, it's her house. He was the boss that day.
You know, his show helped Full House become successful. So
it's kind of a well circle. But but we're jumping around.
Speaker 3 (14:12):
But uh no, no, I I wasn't gonna go to
Full House first. But I have one other question about
that then, because yeah, I don't know if you've ever
been asked this, but when you're with working with twins
but they're playing the same person but they're also babies,
did they have different personalities and you had to work
with them differently?
Speaker 2 (14:27):
Yeah? I think one one of the one of the
girls was better for like sort of the emotional scenes,
you know, and the when the sappy music started playing
and uncle, you know, and the other one was kind
of funnier. So it kind of broke I can't remember,
which was Whitch. But look that show. It's interesting that
it's taken me so many years to really to really
(14:49):
go like, oh, I get it. My son started watching
it mostly watches it to mock me, like I'll say,
you know, Billy, put away your legos, like you got it, dude,
you know. But little ship. The other day he said
to me he wear at the beach. He said, Dad,
you have beautiful hair. I said, thank you. He goes,
how do you get it to come out of your
nose like that?
Speaker 3 (15:06):
God?
Speaker 2 (15:08):
But I'll listen to it, like you'll listen to it
in the car, and I'll listen and I'll be like, wow,
there was really I mean, some of the jokes maybe
didn't hold up, but for the most part, there was
no central character on the show. The central character was
love and like being a family guy now and you'll
see it just was like a really great show for
you know, for someone like my son.
Speaker 4 (15:29):
He's eight now and he's been watching it for a
few years, and you know, I get it.
Speaker 2 (15:33):
It's taken me a long time. I didn't get it
for the long stole. It's like why are people still
watching this? And syndication or what was it? That really
touched them. You know. But I but I'm starting to
understand it now and I certainly have come around to
I've done so much. I've been so Look, the theme
of this pought my interview with you should be gratitude,
(15:53):
because I just I just can't believe that I'm still
around and still getting jobs. And I get to meet
people like you who say, like, oh, I like foll
How's right, I like that show? Or I went to
Japan Jesse the Rippers. You know, I just just full
of gratitude, and you know that show is part of it.
I mean, I just didn't feel like I'm grateful that
I've gotten to do so much other work over the
(16:15):
years I've been on Broadway I got to do. You know,
I still continue to get to do really good stuff.
And so I've fully embraced Uncle Jesse and the whole thing.
And people want to call me Uncle Jesse. It's great.
I was doing a play. I was on Broadway years
the last time I did a show there. It was
with James Old Jones. It was a show called The
Best Man like Gorvi Daald. It was a serious, you know,
(16:35):
three hour drama. And I'm going toe to toe with
James Earl Jones, who you know, and Dabtale was one
of the greatest living actors of our generation for sure
passed away. But at the end of it I said
to him, I said, we were walking, I called me
little John's little John, and I called him big Daddy
as a big daddy. You've done something for me that
nobody has done. You you have. You have given me
(16:58):
a sense of legitimate You've changed people's perception of who
I am and what kind of actor I am, and
being on that stage with you eight times a week
has really changed people's you know, the way they look
at me.
Speaker 4 (17:08):
And right there in the stage door open and there
was a bunch of fans at the gate at the door,
and it.
Speaker 2 (17:13):
Was like Uncle Jesse, Uncle Tessey, say have mercy, sim
and I couldn't look at him. I was like, oh God.
And when I finally looked up, there was someone by
him with a phone saying, James, could you say, luke,
I am your father. And we both looked at each
other and said, fuck it. That's so we are to them,
and that's okay, you know. So that was kind of
a runabout way of saying that I'm okay with all
(17:35):
of it.
Speaker 3 (17:36):
Yeah, I have friends that have a massive song and
they have other hits, but they have one song that
people go play the song and it feels like they
have a relationship where it was awesome at first they there, Delilah,
is that it? That was it? Yeah, plain White teas
you know him as well as I do. Then they
resented it for a while, but then they came back
around to an appreciation. Did you have that relationship a
(17:56):
bit with that show?
Speaker 2 (17:57):
Yeah? Fully, I mean that's what I'm talking about. Like,
it's just it's who's the bad Give me a hint?
Speaker 3 (18:03):
Nah, because because he'll get mad. I got a couple,
but they'll get mad that I'm saying that they resent.
Speaker 2 (18:08):
Their big kind of crows, is it, Adam? You know?
Speaker 3 (18:12):
I think at do you know?

I did palm Rail last year too, and that that
that was like I was in sort of in Kristin
Wig mostly was I was playing opposite of her, but
I was sort of in scenes with with all of them,
with you know, with Alison Janney and you know, Carol
Burnett was on that show of Ricky Martin. It was
a big cast, and that I was sort of a
lot of acting with them. In The Hunting Wives, I
(19:03):
was based, I was really only with one of the
characters on there the whole time, so I've never even
met the girls. I still haven't met them, So it
was sort of like an isolated story of mine. And
I played a music manager who kind of gets his
hooks into this kid who's becoming a singing He has
a hit on Instagram or whatever, and I kind of
get my hooks into them, and you know, it's a
(19:24):
pretty dark character.
Speaker 3 (19:26):
I totally bought that question then because I thought it
was pretty wild. I was a new kid in school.
A lot turns out you went up private. Yeah it's
the easy one.
Speaker 2 (19:32):
Yeah, how were you did well? You grew up in
Arkansas them and yeah, moved around. Did you did you
always want to be in comedy or on the radio
or what yeah, yeah, did you always want to be
an actor? You're too good looking to be on the radio.
You know a lot of people say, you know to
some of these guys, you have a great face for radio,
but you're a handsome guy, so you should be in
(19:52):
front of the camera.
Speaker 3 (19:54):
Well, thank you, but I'd like to go on the
record and say we are on camera right now, just
for the record, okay, like.
Speaker 2 (20:01):
You started in radio.
Speaker 3 (20:02):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I see. But that's
it was the.
Speaker 2 (20:06):
Way I came out. It was always I was there.
I'm sorry I'm not there because this would have been
better if I was sitting on that couch with you.
I saw Shaboozie on there, and you guys were good together.
But you see like a you seem like a funny guy,
and I think I'd be better if I was there.
I apologize to your audience, but it's all good to

playing at the Ryman. Have you ever seen the Beach Boys.
Speaker 3 (20:30):
A long time ago? I saw the My Love version.
M that's that's what you're playing with, right, Yeah? Did
did they have two versions for a while, Brian.
Speaker 2 (20:41):
Went out on his own, but not as the Beach Boys.
You know, God, I started playing with them in eighty five, Bobby.
So it's it's so, I've seen it all I've been.
I mean, Dennis passed away and then I came in
like a year or so after that and started hanging
around and you know whatever.
Speaker 3 (20:56):
But how did that happen? At first? Like, how did
you even know the Beach Boys.
Speaker 2 (21:00):
I was a huge fan and I grew up in
Orange County here and one of my friends was the
guitar player Jeffrey Foskett, and I went to see them
at this baseball stadium out here in San Diego and
he said, I said, I got to meet They're my heroes.
I'm obsessed with the Peach Boys. I was don General
Hospital at the time. It was a pretty big soap
(21:21):
op run. My friend said, Okay, when we're done with
fun for when you're fun Fun Fun, come backstage because
they're going to take They go off stage for about
five minutes, then they come out and do barberant and
then they leave and you won't get to meet them.
So make sure you so. I hear, you know, from
Fun Fun, Fun Fun. I go down on the on
the field and the all of a sudden, I hear
(21:43):
all this screaming. I said what, And then I realized
there was a bunch of cheer that are screaming for me.
So I was like ah, and I started high tailing
around the base, like trying to find backstage around the
So I'm on the field, running around the bases basically,
and I look up on the big jumbo screen and
there I'm like running like this and there's girls chasing me.
And you know, this terrible mumdy hair looked like a
(22:06):
crow died on my head and these little skinny legs
like geordash Jean's running away from And I finally get
backstage and they just get in the door shut. I'm like,
you know, these girls are pounding on the door, and
Mike Lobs said, who's that to my friend? My friend said,
that's John Statles. He's on Jarr Hospital. He's a good drummer.
And he said do girls scream for him like that
(22:27):
all the time? And my friend said, yeah, you goes
get him on stage. So I sat in on Barbaraan
You said in that night that night, and they always
had two drummers, so there's another kid there, and then
they just kept sort of asking me to come out.
The next big show was at in DC on the
(22:48):
fourth of July at the Washington Monument and there was
about There was a show in Philadelphia first for a
million people, and then we went to d C for
I think there was like seven hundred and fifty people,
and the guest guitarist then was Jimmy Paige. Do you
want to hear Jimmy Page story?
Speaker 3 (23:05):
I love it.
Speaker 2 (23:06):
You got is music based right, yeah? Records. Well, so
my friend was in charge of teaching Jimmy Page the
what keys were doing, the songs that he was sitting
in with the Beach Boys. So I get to the
hotel before I even get some of my stuff to
my friends. Come on, let's go up to Jimmy's room.
We're got to show him the keys there, Like, Jimmy,
who you know? This door opens up, this gigantic suite.
(23:28):
I'll never forget. It was at the Watergate Hotel, the
biggest suite I've ever seen. Jimmy Page and his rody
guy come come out. Jimmy's like like I'm eighteen or
nineteen years old. He's like this slinky you know, it
was great, Jimmy Page, you know, it comes and you
want to drink, and I'm like, oh, he had a

screaming at me, and I'm like oh. He goes what else.
I go help me, Rhnda, what key is that? It?

friend to come back. He finally comes back, I'm like,
I'm out of here.

Oh no. And then before Jimmy comes back, there was
a there was a there was like a tie died
sheet over one of the like the envolcases, and out
pops this little GoF girl like a golf cuckoo clock
or something, and she was like was like, you know,
wild hair and like real skinny and goffy and and

she sees me and she screams, and I scream when
she ducks back under the thing, like did anybody see that?
And as I'm leaving, I looked in these anvil cases
and there it wasn't guitars. It was like devil shit,
you know, like bat like a you know, she and
the girl had like a bat necklace. I'll never fit
because they saw her the next day she was with
him and she was like this skinny girl with a

bat necklace. Anyway, it was Uh, that was one of
the first times I played with them. Didn't get any
better as a guy.
Speaker 3 (25:42):
Do you ever like geek out musically with them? And
like talk about Phil Spector or walllet Sound or Wrecking
Crew or like cause I think that's where I would
go with those guys. I just want to know everything
about that era.
Speaker 2 (25:53):
Yeah, I talked to I would talk to Carl about
you know, you know again like I was in my
early twenties and these guys were the Beach you know,
it was you know, it was in the eighties and
nineties when Carl was still around and there was there
was there was about a week of shows that we
did where Mike was in India and there was a
thing in the contract with a certain amount of original

Beach Boys had to be on stage. So Brian came
back and Brian was just you know, freshly out of
the landy you know, uh you know uh exercise that
they took him through, you know, we got to lose
all the weight and you know, they kidnapped him and
he was in Hawaii.
Speaker 4 (26:31):
For a year or so and he was great. He
came back and he was like everything you'd want Brian
to be. And I remember we picked his brain quite
a bit.
Speaker 2 (26:39):
And one night we were playing in Montreal and we're
coming back and they had cameras on him all the time.
So they were videotaping all this and I got the
tape later, but we were walking back and you could
hear it's off camera, Brian is asking that we tried
to He wanted to find a piano and he just
had to play. He had music running through him all
(27:00):
the time, just as you would expect, you know, it
was coming from the angels, just coming through him, and
he had to sort of get it out. He had
to play. And we were trying to find a ballroom
with a piano, and there was one, but it was locked,
and you could hear me going, please, sir, please please,
can we get it? And then the ballroom opens up
and he sat at the piano for like maybe two
hours and just started playing songs that we were calling.
(27:22):
Bruce was there, Johnston and my friend Jeff and it's
just the four of us basically around the piano and
just sail on sailor, you know, a little news coop,
and he starts singing, well, you never closure. So he
was talking about the Wrecking Crew and Lanne Campbell and
you know.
Speaker 3 (27:39):
Like that's Everly Brother just singing there too, right like
he was hit and Neverly Brothers songs. That was the
righteous brothers, Righteous brothers. Good yeah, good one got me
hey and you pointed at me. So now I learned
my lesson. Thank you, yes, so and so yeah.
Speaker 2 (27:51):
But you know, to be honest with you, Bobby, they weren't.
You know, they're not the side guys are even to
this day. But you know it's not like Mike Love
loved do wop, you know, like so we would listen
to songs more like when when when when we were
able to pull up any song on a phone or
a radio station or whatever. I remember driving with him,
(28:14):
like it's just him and I from San Diego to somewhere.
We were like a two or three hour car and
we were just calling out all these old do wop
songs and Chuck Berry and we're talking about Chuck Berry's lyrics.
You know, Mike was a was a great lyricist, and
you know, he really admired Chuck Berry's way, the way
he sort of wrote, you know, you can visualize all that,
you know, you know, trying to get our belt and loose.
Speaker 4 (28:36):
And we were listening to all those old you know
that kind of stuff. So we would listen to music.
But you know, they weren't, you know, they didn't really
sit around and talk.
Speaker 2 (28:44):
They were you know, Mike wasn't you know, he was
the lyricist and he didn't you didn't talk about music
that much with him. But the side guys, you know,
we did. We geek out. We still do. There's some
new guys in there for the last couple of years
ago that are that are new and we'll geek out.
I found a couple of years ago they replaced the drummer.
I found him on Instagram. I had like a couple

of weeks to find someone. And this guy's fucking great
and he's just this, you know, colorful, loves the Beach
Boys and has a record collection and so we geek
out over Beach Boys songs. And there's another a new
guitar player. And about six months ago we added a
new guy named Chris Krawn, who I also found on Instagram.
Speaker 3 (29:24):
So I saw you playing guitar in a video and
not playing drums. So that's why are you mostly doing
vocals and guitar.
Speaker 2 (29:29):
Now with them? I mostly played drums.
Speaker 3 (29:31):
Okay the video that I saw you had a guitar
though you were up in the front.
Speaker 2 (29:34):
Yeah, I do sometimes because I just like to be
up front. They liked me up front a little bit,
and I played about half the show on drums. I'd
rather just sit and play drums all night, but you know,
I like to get I mean, they like me to
get out there.
Speaker 3 (29:46):
Do you have any cool little Richard stories from when
he came on the show.
Speaker 2 (29:52):
He was He was great. He was very much you know,
he really put that character on, you know when when
people are but then not, you know, you could talk
to him. I wasn't. I didn't really talk to him
a ton about music. I one thing I thought was strange.
We went in and did that song by who You're

Not Gonna I Got a man blah blah blah blah,
and we pre recorded the track so he could just
come in and play and play piano and sing. And
he couldn't. He was He's banging on the piano like
his fingers like this, and he couldn't quite keep up
with because we'd already recorded it, you know, so he
had one of our guys to play piano. I was
kind of surprised, but he was great. We had that set,

there was this I have some video of it, and
I just started calling out little Richard songs and he
starts playing. When the results kind of playing along, he said,
you're a little piece of leather and you're all put together.
Speaker 3 (30:51):
Did you feel like this show a bit could be
a fantasy camp for you, especially with the music part
of it, because you got to be you get to
create your own rock star dream, right, I mean from
from the band to the famous people coming on the show.
Speaker 2 (31:05):
Yeah, I mean, you know, when you're going through stuff,
as you've probably know because you've you know, been on
American Idol, you look back No, I'm not slamming. I
like you look back at and go like, oh, that
was cool. I was on one of the bigger shows
in americ you know. Like said, I think when we're
going through it, I didn't really think that it was
a It wasn't. It was a great thing for me
(31:26):
to bring my friends on. So yeah, So the Beach Boys,
you know, they've done so much for me. If I
if you know, if I've done anything, people come up
to me and say, I got turned on to the
Beach Boys because I watched Full House, or I got
turned off by Forever by watching your own full House.
Like you said, that's the greatest gift I could give back.
To them, you know, and so it was sort of
a playground like that, Let's take to the beach Boys on.

Let's get Frank, Yeah, let's get a little rochard on,
you know, let's and then each week, you know, whoever
was one of my friends, whatever, one of my my
friends were nicest to me. They were in the Rippers.
So I could just bring on my friends, you know,
to that band. But I'm not, you know, it wasn't
a great singer. I still not a great singer. It's
not it's I don't enjoy singing, and I'm not you know,

I can get by on guitar. I'm not a great
I love playing drums and I'm super into drums.

When did you start playing drums? What age?

I was like ten, eleven twelve?

Now, was that just a set that your family had,
or one at school or what?
Speaker 2 (32:25):
I was playing at school a little bit, But then
I think I got I had kind of a crummy
drum set. My dad bought me and he said, you know,
if you get practice every day and get good, I'll
buying a good drum set. And he bought me at
Nude Ludwig. I'm out here in Newport right now. Yesterday,
I got hung out with Trey Cool you know from
Green Day, and we just played drums. He's a drum nerd.
He loved it. We just sat in his got.

This warehouse and probably a hundred drum sets, totally geeking
out over all of it.
Speaker 2 (32:51):
And then we just sat up two drums and two
It was just sat and played for two or three hours.
I was like, this is pretty cool. Yeah, I mean,
these are the things I'm grateful for. Like if you
would have told me. I wrote a book years ago
called if you would have told me, If you would
have told me that I'd be in Newport playing with
Trey Coole, you know, in his warehouse, or I'd be
doing a podcast with a great Bobby I wouldn't believe.

to really be on your toes with him, which is

to just watch him pick up a guitars and saying
we played. We did a sort of a thing on

for Netflix for Bob's It was at the Comedy Star
and it was, you know, a thing for a kind
of a you know, funeral, what do we call it?
For Bob and Jim Carrey and showed up and Chris
Rock was crazy of these people just showed up. But
I put a little band together and John was playing
guitar and I was playing drums. It was pretty cool.

performers of all time and to treat us as what

he is, and he did the opposite. He was so
kind and generous with his time and stories. I was.
I was blown away by it.

And what did he do the podcast?

He did? Yeah, we hung out and then we talked
for fifty minutes. And you know, there are certain things
even with you, I wondered. I was like, I don't
want to go to full house first, because I'm sure
all you get is full house. So I didn't want
to go right to just like what's it like being
a beatle? But he was just like you did in
this if you don't mind me complimenting you, Like he
went right there immediately without me going there, and made
it so easy that he just started talking about the

early days back in Germany, playing six eight hours at
a time, and it was it was so refreshing that
somebody who had that much history was still so open
and generous about that history.

my wife and I had our first dance. Do you

I like Big Shot too, but R was a special
one for me.

But that's one of those shows too where you went
in and you had to kind of get to know
the cast, right, like it's a chemistry thing.
Speaker 2 (51:04):
Yeah, that one was interesting because I think, you know,
that was pretty, you know, high end television program. I
had auditioned four years before and I went in. It
was right after Clooney left and I went in and
I sort of thought that I had the role. They
kind of made it sound like I had it, but
then all of a sudden, I had to go audition.
I thought it was a meeting and then I turned
into an audition just for a couple of producers that
(51:26):
it was not like I walked in. There was like
twenty people at the heads of the studio, the network
and John Wells and everybody, and I just shipped the bit.
I just I was so nervous and I was just
it was the hottest day in the valley and I'm
like sweating and I'm like just barely getting the lines out,
and I was terrible, and I put my head out
and I walked out of this. And for years I'd
(51:47):
see John Wells, who is the writer creator the show
pretty soon, and I would just hide from him, you know.
Then all of a sudden, they and I was crushed
because I thought, oh, this was my big break, you know,
Clooney had just left.
Speaker 4 (51:58):
And so.
Speaker 2 (52:00):
Years later they asked me to just to be on
and so I was. I was doing the first day
I was on set and Serena Williams was on that
episode too for some reason. But there was a plane
crash and I was I got in the middle of
it and I was bloodied and I'm laying on a
gurney and John Wells comes up to me and say, hey, John,
welcome to Michelle I'm like, oh god, I said, listen,
(52:20):
I gotta tell you. You know, it was the most
embarrassing thing that you know, when I auditioned for you guys.
I'm so sorry. I was such a shit, and I
thank you for having me on the show. I said,
what are you talking about? I said, well, remember when
I came in and I was so bad, and you know,
he goes.

You were fine? You were just reminded of so much
of George Cleary. We we said no, wait, we didn't
want to do that too you, so we waited for
a couple of years to bring on. So that was
the story there. So you never know, Bobby Bones, You

thing about you, like John Mayer, but maybe he just
accidentally stopped following you on Instagram? Do you think no,

was it something you did like us? Like you really
have to.

I've really not thought about it much. You talking about
that reminded me of it. And then I just went
one day to his page and it didn't say he
followed me, because you can look and see, and it said.

it shouldn't have come to an end because it was
in the top fifteen or twenty. When when it you know,
when there was still millions of people watching it. They
were kind of like, we think it's going to be canceled.
They wanted to go to the w B. The WB
was a new thing. They said movie we would do

ano the w B, and I'm like, maybe we won't.
I was sort of ready to go, and I think
the tw we're ready to move on too. So they
said that we asked for too much money. That wasn't it.
They wanted to go to the w B, and w
B was like or the CW one of those. I
think it was maybe the WB and do it for
cheaper or whatever. And so we didn't, and so we
sort of shot it. We shot an episode and then

we so we didn't really know what was ending. That's
why it wasn't like a great last ending show. It
was just kind of like I think Michelle fell off
a horse or something. And you know, it wasn't like
we it wasn't like we geared up, you know for
the final like some of the great last episodes of television.
You know, we just kind of just sort of threw
it together and it was what it was.

were supposed to do another season and then they didn't

half two years. I don't think I could have handled

as a kid was to be married and have you know,

probably just got it in just the lid in the niked.

You know, I wouldn't have been a good probably a
good father, or a good husband until I had, you know,
straightened myself up. So but I know, I don't It
doesn't bother me at all. I don't care. I'm a
I mean, I feel like I'm a young dad. I
do everything with him.

writing it for It's it's a it's called When I
grew Up to be a Man, and it's about and
I'm just interviewing dad's boy dads and just learning from
them and trying to figure out how to raise a
good boy in this environment of you know, the manisphere,

and you know, and just growing up to respect women
and still be strong and be sensitive and be empathetic.
And somehow my kids in that going in that direction,
which is good.

just really did that recently with these guys who do
the sing in the kitchen. I don't know if you

needs kids or whatever it is. But I'd say six

out of ten dms that I get are asking me

Could you be like, sure, but it's flattering. It does
make a really beautiful wedding song.

I think, why did you pick that song for the show.

You know, it was one of those underrated Beach Boys songs.
People didn't know it. I know, Dennis loved it, and so,
you know, I felt like I could maybe do it
just I mean, I didn't know that it was going
to sort of take off and be people's weddings. I'm
sure Dennis is smiling, you know, wherever he is about
the fact that this song, you know, got into the

ether of the world and people, you know, got him
to it because it was kind of a sleeper song
on Sunflower.
Speaker 3 (06:55):
I think, you know, one of the trips that I
took when I first started to have some success because
I never traveled ever growing up small town in Arkansas.
But when I had some money, I went to Japan.
And the only reason I went to Japan, and I
went by myself was because that's where Jesse and the
Rippers were famous. That's literally because I just found like
six places from television, Like I went to Hawaii because

of the Brady Bunch. I went to London because of
friends and I went to Japan because Jesse and the
Rippers got famous in Japan.
Speaker 2 (07:24):
So funny. So what's your story. You grew up in Arkansas?
If you did? You start off as a DJ and
podcast the podcast world and all that.
Speaker 3 (07:31):
I grew up in a town of like six hundred people,
seven hundred people and then have done radio and television.
And you did competition shows on American Idol for like
four years, but just doing the radio show and then
I do this show for Netflix now.
Speaker 2 (07:45):
But oh, you were the guy in America like an
announcer kind of sort of.
Speaker 3 (07:50):
I was on four years whenever Ryan first got the
Ryan got the job in New York doing Ryan and Kelly.
They needed somebody to be in LA to in case
he couldn't get back. So I was like the full
time mentored all the contestants on camera for four years.
And then Ryan got sick once and I filled in.
But I did that for four years.
Speaker 2 (08:08):
So you're a singer, like trade down.
Speaker 3 (08:11):
I do comedy music. I'm not like you.
Speaker 2 (08:13):
I'm a terrible singer.
Speaker 4 (08:15):
But wait you you so you were just you were
mentoring these kids, but you couldn't really sing well.
Speaker 3 (08:21):
When I got brought in. It was because I do
a bunch of media and I do comedy, and but
then I come from like Trailer Park, and so a
lot of these kids come from where I come from,
and so it was that. But I've also been in
music for so many years, and so that job turned
from one episode into four years.
Speaker 2 (08:39):
Wow, that's cool. I'm so I should have done more research.
I'm sorry. I thought we'd met before. Yes we haven't,
because you said nice to meet you.
Speaker 3 (08:47):
Yeah, but I never said you never say what nice
to meet you? Always say good good to see you?
Speaker 2 (08:52):
Because I'm afraid you said nice to meet you. Can
we roll that back?
Speaker 3 (08:55):
No? No, I said it to you because I knew
I've never met you, because you're a long lost hero.
Speaker 2 (09:00):
I thought that. I I thought that I met you before.
So you did comedy and did you know Sagit?
Speaker 3 (09:08):
I did not. I met him once. He did. I
did an interview with him a long time ago, and
I found them to be delightfully funny. And then and
then I think, now everybody knows, this is a long
time ago. And then I went to a show and
I was like, what is happening? I don't even know
what's happening right now.
Speaker 2 (09:24):
He was dirty, he.
Speaker 3 (09:24):
Was extreme, and you guys stayed close, right.
Speaker 4 (09:28):
Yes, we didn't start off close, you know. He both
him and Dave came from and I loved comics.
Speaker 2 (09:34):
I still do. I love stand up comedy. I'm obsessed
with stand up comedy. I try to befriend any great
comic out there. I can't do it, but I'm fascinated
by the structure, how you guys you know, constructed joke,
the science, the math behind the economy of words. I
just them fascinated by it. So getting to work with
those guys was, you know, was incredible from that standpoint.
(09:54):
But all they really cared about was making like the
crew laugh, you know. And I was like, I was
coming from I just did a show with Jack Klugman,
who's a famous sitcom guy, and so I was, you know,
coming to it with more of an actor's point of
view of these scenes and trying to work these scenes,
and the guys were just trying to make the guys,
you know, the crew laugh and whatever that was about.
It was it was especially Bob, and it was it
(10:15):
was distracting for a lot of it, and we didn't
get along at all for the first couple of years,
and then I think it was maybe the third or
third year for fourth something like that season, Bob's sister
got Sclara Dermot, which he spent the rest of his
life advocating raising money for this horrific disease. Dave's sister
(10:36):
got cancer, and my sister had diagnosed with a brain tumor.
And so all of a sudden, we weren't three guys
on a show with three brothers grieving, you know, our sisters.
And sadly, Bob and Dave lost their sister, and my
sister made it. She had turned out to be just
she had MS instead of I mean in a brain turber.
So we came really close then, and then we just
(10:59):
started to you know, realized that there was a lot
to learn from each other, I think, and I had
a lot to learn. I learned a lot from those guys.
But then Bob just we just ended up being best friends.
And then we were just there for each other through
every you know, all the ups and downs of live
divorces and marriages, and but I just loved him so dearly,
and it was such a tragic loss. Just one day,
(11:21):
just in a blink of an eye, he was gone,
and he was such a he was bombastic with his
bombastic with his love like he you know, he was
He would text you fifty times a day and then
call you twenty times to make sure that you got
the text, and then leave messaging. You know, he was
that kind of guy, and you know, just losing him
has been a real you know, life has just been
(11:43):
just a little not as funny, you.
Speaker 3 (11:46):
Know whenever he joined that show, because I've seen the
pilot and it wasn't him. Was that awkward for you
guys when they switched out that character.
Speaker 2 (11:57):
That's a good question. I I think I felt bad
for the guy. But it wasn't like we didn't know
the show was going to be and the show wasn't
hit like for the first season. It wasn't like, oh,
that guy's really losing out on something. We were just
shooting a pilot and we didn't really know what we had,
and I think, you know, the chemistry of the show
is something that you can't I think the show. I
(12:17):
don't know if the show would have been the same
with the original guy, obviously, but I was a little
I was a little weird, you know, it was a
little weird I think I was more pissed that I
had to go back and reshoot those scenes the show.
The show itself was like, you know, I was coming
off of you know, General Hospital, and I worked with
Jack Klugman, and I was doing some sophisticated, more sophisticated coming.
(12:41):
I always wanted to be on a show like Happy
Days and Bernie Shirley and working men like Gary Marshall shows,
and really, in the beginning, really wasn't that for me.
And it took me a while to sort of settle in,
and it took the studio. The show was going to
be canceled about halfway through, and our writer producer Chip Franklin,
took a scene to the network and it was a
(13:02):
scene with Michelle and I and David was in it too.
I think we were trying to give her medicine. I
didn't do this thing, and it was this chemistry between
Michelle and Jesse and they were like that that's what
we want, that we want the show to be that.
So we started writing towards that and it picked up
a little bit in the ratings. But the truth is
(13:23):
that they put us on in the summer after Who's
the Boss and Whose Boss was a big hit with
Tony Danza, and that in turn sort of gave us
the audience, and then they came back the second season.
I watched us. Coincidentally, years earlier, I caught my first girlfriend,
who was madly in love in bed with Tony Danzer.
So somehow is that right? It's the true story? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (13:50):
No way, Yeah, who's who's her house? Your house was
her house?
Speaker 2 (13:55):
Yeah, it's her house. He was the boss that day.
You know, his show helped Full House become successful. So
it's kind of a well circle. But but we're jumping around.
Speaker 3 (14:12):
But uh no, no, I I wasn't gonna go to
Full House first. But I have one other question about
that then, because yeah, I don't know if you've ever
been asked this, but when you're with working with twins
but they're playing the same person but they're also babies,
did they have different personalities and you had to work
with them differently?
Speaker 2 (14:27):
Yeah? I think one one of the one of the
girls was better for like sort of the emotional scenes,
you know, and the when the sappy music started playing
and uncle, you know, and the other one was kind
of funnier. So it kind of broke I can't remember,
which was Whitch. But look that show. It's interesting that
it's taken me so many years to really to really
(14:49):
go like, oh, I get it. My son started watching
it mostly watches it to mock me, like I'll say,
you know, Billy, put away your legos, like you got it, dude,
you know. But little ship. The other day he said
to me he wear at the beach. He said, Dad,
you have beautiful hair. I said, thank you. He goes,
how do you get it to come out of your
nose like that?
Speaker 3 (15:06):
God?
Speaker 2 (15:08):
But I'll listen to it, like you'll listen to it
in the car, and I'll listen and I'll be like, wow,
there was really I mean, some of the jokes maybe
didn't hold up, but for the most part, there was
no central character on the show. The central character was
love and like being a family guy now and you'll
see it just was like a really great show for
you know, for someone like my son.
Speaker 4 (15:29):
He's eight now and he's been watching it for a
few years, and you know, I get it.
Speaker 2 (15:33):
It's taken me a long time. I didn't get it
for the long stole. It's like why are people still
watching this? And syndication or what was it? That really
touched them. You know. But I but I'm starting to
understand it now and I certainly have come around to
I've done so much. I've been so Look, the theme
of this pought my interview with you should be gratitude,
(15:53):
because I just I just can't believe that I'm still
around and still getting jobs. And I get to meet
people like you who say, like, oh, I like foll
How's right, I like that show? Or I went to
Japan Jesse the Rippers. You know, I just just full
of gratitude, and you know that show is part of it.
I mean, I just didn't feel like I'm grateful that
I've gotten to do so much other work over the
(16:15):
years I've been on Broadway I got to do. You know,
I still continue to get to do really good stuff.
And so I've fully embraced Uncle Jesse and the whole thing.
And people want to call me Uncle Jesse. It's great.
I was doing a play. I was on Broadway years
the last time I did a show there. It was
with James Old Jones. It was a show called The
Best Man like Gorvi Daald. It was a serious, you know,
(16:35):
three hour drama. And I'm going toe to toe with
James Earl Jones, who you know, and Dabtale was one
of the greatest living actors of our generation for sure
passed away. But at the end of it I said
to him, I said, we were walking, I called me
little John's little John, and I called him big Daddy
as a big daddy. You've done something for me that
nobody has done. You you have. You have given me
(16:58):
a sense of legitimate You've changed people's perception of who
I am and what kind of actor I am, and
being on that stage with you eight times a week
has really changed people's you know, the way they look
at me.
Speaker 4 (17:08):
And right there in the stage door open and there
was a bunch of fans at the gate at the door,
and it.
Speaker 2 (17:13):
Was like Uncle Jesse, Uncle Tessey, say have mercy, sim
and I couldn't look at him. I was like, oh God.
And when I finally looked up, there was someone by
him with a phone saying, James, could you say, luke,
I am your father. And we both looked at each
other and said, fuck it. That's so we are to them,
and that's okay, you know. So that was kind of
a runabout way of saying that I'm okay with all
(17:35):
of it.
Speaker 3 (17:36):
Yeah, I have friends that have a massive song and
they have other hits, but they have one song that
people go play the song and it feels like they
have a relationship where it was awesome at first they there, Delilah,
is that it? That was it? Yeah, plain White teas
you know him as well as I do. Then they
resented it for a while, but then they came back
around to an appreciation. Did you have that relationship a

bit with that show?
Speaker 2 (17:57):
Yeah? Fully, I mean that's what I'm talking about. Like,
it's just it's who's the bad Give me a hint?

Nah, because because he'll get mad. I got a couple,
but they'll get mad that I'm saying that they resent.

Wig mostly was I was playing opposite of her, but
I was sort of in scenes with with all of them,

a big cast, and that I was sort of a
lot of acting with them. In The Hunting Wives, I

was based, I was really only with one of the
characters on there the whole time, so I've never even
met the girls. I still haven't met them, So it
was sort of like an isolated story of mine. And
I played a music manager who kind of gets his
hooks into this kid who's becoming a singing He has
a hit on Instagram or whatever, and I kind of
get my hooks into them, and you know, it's a
(19:24):
pretty dark character.
Speaker 3 (19:26):
I totally bought that question then because I thought it
was pretty wild. I was a new kid in school.
A lot turns out you went up private. Yeah it's
the easy one.
Speaker 2 (19:32):
Yeah, how were you did well? You grew up in
Arkansas them and yeah, moved around. Did you did you
always want to be in comedy or on the radio
or what yeah, yeah, did you always want to be
an actor? You're too good looking to be on the radio.
You know a lot of people say, you know to
some of these guys, you have a great face for radio,
but you're a handsome guy, so you should be in

Well, thank you, but I'd like to go on the

Went out on his own, but not as the Beach Boys.
You know, God, I started playing with them in eighty five, Bobby.
So it's it's so, I've seen it all I've been.
I mean, Dennis passed away and then I came in
like a year or so after that and started hanging
around and you know whatever.
Speaker 3 (20:56):
But how did that happen? At first? Like, how did
you even know the Beach Boys.
Speaker 2 (21:00):
I was a huge fan and I grew up in
Orange County here and one of my friends was the
guitar player Jeffrey Foskett, and I went to see them
at this baseball stadium out here in San Diego and
he said, I said, I got to meet They're my heroes.
I'm obsessed with the Peach Boys. I was don General
Hospital at the time. It was a pretty big soap
(21:21):
op run. My friend said, Okay, when we're done with
fun for when you're fun Fun Fun, come backstage because
they're going to take They go off stage for about
five minutes, then they come out and do barberant and
then they leave and you won't get to meet them.
So make sure you so. I hear, you know, from
Fun Fun, Fun Fun. I go down on the on
the field and the all of a sudden, I hear
(21:43):
all this screaming. I said what, And then I realized
there was a bunch of cheer that are screaming for me.
So I was like ah, and I started high tailing
around the base, like trying to find backstage around the
So I'm on the field, running around the bases basically,
and I look up on the big jumbo screen and
there I'm like running like this and there's girls chasing me.
And you know, this terrible mumdy hair looked like a
(22:06):
crow died on my head and these little skinny legs
like geordash Jean's running away from And I finally get
backstage and they just get in the door shut. I'm like,
you know, these girls are pounding on the door, and
Mike Lobs said, who's that to my friend? My friend said,
that's John Statles. He's on Jarr Hospital. He's a good drummer.
And he said do girls scream for him like that
(22:27):
all the time? And my friend said, yeah, you goes
get him on stage. So I sat in on Barbaraan
You said in that night that night, and they always
had two drummers, so there's another kid there, and then
they just kept sort of asking me to come out.
The next big show was at in DC on the
(22:48):
fourth of July at the Washington Monument and there was
about There was a show in Philadelphia first for a
million people, and then we went to d C for
I think there was like seven hundred and fifty people,
and the guest guitarist then was Jimmy Paige. Do you
want to hear Jimmy Page story?
Speaker 3 (23:05):
I love it.
Speaker 2 (23:06):
You got is music based right, yeah? Records. Well, so
my friend was in charge of teaching Jimmy Page the
what keys were doing, the songs that he was sitting
in with the Beach Boys. So I get to the
hotel before I even get some of my stuff to
my friends. Come on, let's go up to Jimmy's room.
We're got to show him the keys there, Like, Jimmy,
who you know? This door opens up, this gigantic suite.
(23:28):
I'll never forget. It was at the Watergate Hotel, the
biggest suite I've ever seen. Jimmy Page and his rody
guy come come out. Jimmy's like like I'm eighteen or
nineteen years old. He's like this slinky you know, it
was great, Jimmy Page, you know, it comes and you
want to drink, and I'm like, oh, he had a
bottle of Jack Dagge's. He says, what's He said nothing?
I said, you have a light beer, mister Page. Okay,
(23:51):
So he goes off to get a light beer. I
guess my friend goes off with his roadie because he
had some new b Bender guitar that he wanted to
check out. I'm standing alone it teen, nineteen years old
in this gigantic broom. It was weird. There's all these
anvil cases around too, and I thought they had guitars.
And so I sit down this big flowery blue couch.
(24:14):
I just kind of sinking, you know, like it's like this.
I like, I'm looking around, like what the hell's going
on here? He comes out gives me the beer and
I just down it because i'm you know, and he says, okay,
what song is? I said, I think you're doing barbarads?
What song is that? What key is at it? I
said it's in f shark god gd salo and shirt
(24:35):
screaming at me, and I'm like oh. He goes what else.
I go help me, Rhnda, what key is that? It?
Speaker 4 (24:43):
Like see sure, that's sure? And I'm begging for my
friend to come back. He finally comes back, I'm like,
I'm out of here.
Speaker 2 (24:51):
Oh no. And then before Jimmy comes back, there was
a there was a there was like a tie died
sheet over one of the like the envolcases, and out
pops this little GoF girl like a golf cuckoo clock
or something, and she was like was like, you know,
wild hair and like real skinny and goffy and and
(25:12):
she sees me and she screams, and I scream when
she ducks back under the thing, like did anybody see that?
And as I'm leaving, I looked in these anvil cases
and there it wasn't guitars. It was like devil shit,
you know, like bat like a you know, she and
the girl had like a bat necklace. I'll never fit
because they saw her the next day she was with
him and she was like this skinny girl with a
(25:32):
bat necklace. Anyway, it was Uh, that was one of
the first times I played with them. Didn't get any
better as a guy.
Speaker 3 (25:42):
Do you ever like geek out musically with them? And
like talk about Phil Spector or walllet Sound or Wrecking
Crew or like cause I think that's where I would
go with those guys. I just want to know everything
about that era.
Speaker 2 (25:53):
Yeah, I talked to I would talk to Carl about
you know, you know again like I was in my
early twenties and these guys were the Beach you know,
it was you know, it was in the eighties and
nineties when Carl was still around and there was there
was there was about a week of shows that we
did where Mike was in India and there was a
thing in the contract with a certain amount of original
(26:15):
Beach Boys had to be on stage. So Brian came
back and Brian was just you know, freshly out of
the landy you know, uh you know uh exercise that
they took him through, you know, we got to lose
all the weight and you know, they kidnapped him and
he was in Hawaii.
Speaker 4 (26:31):
For a year or so and he was great. He
came back and he was like everything you'd want Brian
to be. And I remember we picked his brain quite
a bit.
Speaker 2 (26:39):
And one night we were playing in Montreal and we're
coming back and they had cameras on him all the time.
So they were videotaping all this and I got the
tape later, but we were walking back and you could
hear it's off camera, Brian is asking that we tried
to He wanted to find a piano and he just
had to play. He had music running through him all
(27:00):
the time, just as you would expect, you know, it
was coming from the angels, just coming through him, and
he had to sort of get it out. He had
to play. And we were trying to find a ballroom
with a piano, and there was one, but it was locked,
and you could hear me going, please, sir, please please,
can we get it? And then the ballroom opens up
and he sat at the piano for like maybe two
hours and just started playing songs that we were calling.
(27:22):
Bruce was there, Johnston and my friend Jeff and it's
just the four of us basically around the piano and
just sail on sailor, you know, a little news coop,
and he starts singing, well, you never closure. So he
was talking about the Wrecking Crew and Lanne Campbell and
you know.
Speaker 3 (27:39):
Like that's Everly Brother just singing there too, right like
he was hit and Neverly Brothers songs. That was the
righteous brothers, Righteous brothers. Good yeah, good one got me
hey and you pointed at me. So now I learned
my lesson. Thank you, yes, so and so yeah.
Speaker 2 (27:51):
But you know, to be honest with you, Bobby, they weren't.
You know, they're not the side guys are even to
this day. But you know it's not like Mike Love
loved do wop, you know, like so we would listen
to songs more like when when when when we were
able to pull up any song on a phone or
a radio station or whatever. I remember driving with him,
(28:14):
like it's just him and I from San Diego to somewhere.
We were like a two or three hour car and
we were just calling out all these old do wop
songs and Chuck Berry and we're talking about Chuck Berry's lyrics.
You know, Mike was a was a great lyricist, and
you know, he really admired Chuck Berry's way, the way
he sort of wrote, you know, you can visualize all that,
you know, you know, trying to get our belt and loose.
Speaker 4 (28:36):
And we were listening to all those old you know
that kind of stuff. So we would listen to music.
But you know, they weren't, you know, they didn't really
sit around and talk.
Speaker 2 (28:44):
They were you know, Mike wasn't you know, he was
the lyricist and he didn't you didn't talk about music
that much with him. But the side guys, you know,
we did. We geek out. We still do. There's some
new guys in there for the last couple of years
ago that are that are new and we'll geek out.
I found a couple of years ago they replaced the drummer.
I found him on Instagram. I had like a couple
(29:05):
of weeks to find someone. And this guy's fucking great
and he's just this, you know, colorful, loves the Beach
Boys and has a record collection and so we geek
out over Beach Boys songs. And there's another a new
guitar player. And about six months ago we added a
new guy named Chris Krawn, who I also found on Instagram.
Speaker 3 (29:24):
So I saw you playing guitar in a video and

a ton about music. I one thing I thought was strange.
We went in and did that song by who You're

and we pre recorded the track so he could just
come in and play and play piano and sing. And
he couldn't. He was He's banging on the piano like
his fingers like this, and he couldn't quite keep up
with because we'd already recorded it, you know, so he
had one of our guys to play piano. I was
kind of surprised, but he was great. We had that set,

there was this I have some video of it, and
I just started calling out little Richard songs and he
starts playing. When the results kind of playing along, he said,
you're a little piece of leather and you're all put together.

Did you feel like this show a bit could be
a fantasy camp for you, especially with the music part
of it, because you got to be you get to
create your own rock star dream, right, I mean from
from the band to the famous people coming on the show.
Speaker 2 (31:05):
Yeah, I mean, you know, when you're going through stuff,
as you've probably know because you've you know, been on
American Idol, you look back No, I'm not slamming. I
like you look back at and go like, oh, that
was cool. I was on one of the bigger shows
in americ you know. Like said, I think when we're
going through it, I didn't really think that it was
a It wasn't. It was a great thing for me

to bring my friends on. So yeah, So the Beach Boys,
you know, they've done so much for me. If I
if you know, if I've done anything, people come up
to me and say, I got turned on to the
Beach Boys because I watched Full House, or I got
turned off by Forever by watching your own full House.
Like you said, that's the greatest gift I could give back.
To them, you know, and so it was sort of
a playground like that, Let's take to the beach Boys on.

you know, let's and then each week, you know, whoever
was one of my friends, whatever, one of my my
friends were nicest to me. They were in the Rippers.
So I could just bring on my friends, you know,

a great singer. I still not a great singer. It's
not it's I don't enjoy singing, and I'm not you know,

I can get by on guitar. I'm not a great
I love playing drums and I'm super into drums.

I was like ten, eleven twelve?

Now, was that just a set that your family had,
or one at school or what?

I was playing at school a little bit, But then
I think I got I had kind of a crummy
drum set. My dad bought me and he said, you know,
if you get practice every day and get good, I'll
buying a good drum set. And he bought me at
Nude Ludwig. I'm out here in Newport right now. Yesterday,
I got hung out with Trey Cool you know from
Green Day, and we just played drums. He's a drum nerd.
He loved it. We just sat in his got.

This warehouse and probably a hundred drum sets, totally geeking
out over all of it.

And then we just sat up two drums and two
It was just sat and played for two or three hours.
I was like, this is pretty cool. Yeah, I mean,

would have told me. I wrote a book years ago
called if you would have told me, If you would
have told me that I'd be in Newport playing with
Trey Coole, you know, in his warehouse, or I'd be
doing a podcast with a great Bobby I wouldn't believe.

Rock was crazy of these people just showed up. But
I put a little band together and John was playing
guitar and I was playing drums. It was pretty cool.

even with you, I wondered. I was like, I don't

a beatle? But he was just like you did in
this if you don't mind me complimenting you, Like he
went right there immediately without me going there, and made
it so easy that he just started talking about the

early days back in Germany, playing six eight hours at
a time, and it was it was so refreshing that
somebody who had that much history was still so open
and generous about that history.

the cast, right, like it's a chemistry thing.
Speaker 2 (51:04):
Yeah, that one was interesting because I think, you know,
that was pretty, you know, high end television program. I
had auditioned four years before and I went in. It
was right after Clooney left and I went in and
I sort of thought that I had the role. They
kind of made it sound like I had it, but
then all of a sudden, I had to go audition.
I thought it was a meeting and then I turned
into an audition just for a couple of producers that
(51:26):
it was not like I walked in. There was like
twenty people at the heads of the studio, the network
and John Wells and everybody, and I just shipped the bit.
I just I was so nervous and I was just
it was the hottest day in the valley and I'm
like sweating and I'm like just barely getting the lines out,
and I was terrible, and I put my head out
and I walked out of this. And for years I'd
(51:47):
see John Wells, who is the writer creator the show
pretty soon, and I would just hide from him, you know.
Then all of a sudden, they and I was crushed
because I thought, oh, this was my big break, you know,
Clooney had just left.
Speaker 4 (51:58):
And so.
Speaker 2 (52:00):
Years later they asked me to just to be on
and so I was. I was doing the first day
I was on set and Serena Williams was on that
episode too for some reason. But there was a plane
crash and I was I got in the middle of
it and I was bloodied and I'm laying on a
gurney and John Wells comes up to me and say, hey, John,
welcome to Michelle I'm like, oh god, I said, listen,
(52:20):
I gotta tell you. You know, it was the most
embarrassing thing that you know, when I auditioned for you guys.
I'm so sorry. I was such a shit, and I
thank you for having me on the show. I said,
what are you talking about? I said, well, remember when
I came in and I was so bad, and you know,
he goes.
Speaker 3 (52:33):
What now?
Speaker 2 (52:34):
You were fine? You were just reminded of so much
of George Cleary. We we said no, wait, we didn't
want to do that too you, so we waited for
a couple of years to bring on. So that was
the story there. So you never know, Bobby Bones, You
never know. You always think of people think a certain
thing about you, like John Mayer, but maybe he just
accidentally stopped following you on Instagram? Do you think no,
(52:57):
was it something you did like us? Like you really
have to.
Speaker 3 (53:01):
I've really not thought about it much. You talking about
that reminded me of it. And then I just went
one day to his page and it didn't say he
followed me, because you can look and see, and it said.
Speaker 2 (53:12):
Was he following you before?
Speaker 3 (53:13):
He was? Yeah, and he sometimes he comment on stuff.
We had a lot of little.
Speaker 2 (53:16):
Think do you think he just did you do something?
Did you say something shitty about him to one of
the counting crows? He must have he got back, it
got back to him or something.
Speaker 3 (53:28):
I don't think so.
Speaker 2 (53:30):
Okay, you should think he was in love with you
because you're a handsome guy.
Speaker 3 (53:34):
I don't know. I don't think so, but I don't know.
I can never get to the bottom of stuff. I
can never know someone's true.
Speaker 2 (53:40):
Hard to get to a lot of the bottom of
stuff with you. As soon as we get off his phone,
I'm making some calls.
Speaker 3 (53:45):
This is not a phone, John, this is this is
not a phone. Okay. Two final questions? Question number one
got all day for you? No, no, no questions. Question
number one of two. Did you ever meet the dinosaurs
from TGIF?
Speaker 2 (54:08):
Oh my god, you know what I just did? Oh
my god.
Speaker 4 (54:11):
I just worked with the Muppets and I worked with
the guy who played the Dad. His name is Bill
Billy and and and we were talking about puppets and
TV shows and stuff and goes. Oh, I started on
on the on dinosaurs. I played the Dad. So yes,
I did, Bobby. Good question, your smart ass.
Speaker 2 (54:31):
You kind of throw me a Curveball.
Speaker 3 (54:32):
No, you guys were aline at the same time. I
just wondered if you ever met you and the dinosaurs,
you and not the mommy were hanging out. I didn't
know that was the case. Okay, but I.
Speaker 2 (54:43):
Just I mean, I knew that guy. He just told
me that he played the dad on there Fred Flintstone.
Speaker 3 (54:48):
Kind of character, right, yeah, yeah, he was like worked
at the Bill. Yeah, okay, he does.
Speaker 2 (54:52):
He does a lot of the Muppet guys. He was
just doing a I'm in a ride, a new ride
at disney World, which has been the highlight in my
life next to this podcast. And it's uh so I
got to work with them up he played, he was
doing Floyd. You don't care about the Muppets, but you
will because your daughter is going to be into him.

Okay, their favorite guest was Tory Kelly, and all the
kid was talking about Tory Kelly and these two guys.

Nice? But you're in person. That's why you're in a person.

No, she was. She was a lot of people had
some weird reactions about that, but I thought it was fine,
you know, because she's sort of a take to try
to take the piss out of you, unlike you.

Oh? Yeah, I'm not into it, but I do it.

Yeah you have to.

a lot grosser to me. It's really not that bad.

Yeah, it's you know, till they actually poop on you.
Then it's like, yeah, I think you're going to be
a great father. And I'm excited for you. I don't
even know you that well, but I just got a
good vibe from you. Oh thanks, You're sort of a
good You're You're like you're a good straight man. I
mean that in a I'm sure you're funny, but like
you have a very dry sense of humor.

I'm generous in my interview skills. So I really appreciate
the last fifty seven minutes. I thought we'd do forty
five or so and I'd be like, man, that John
Stamo is much nicer on television. But you know what.

It got. The last six minutes were killer.

Yeah.

No, when we got into the dancing with star stuff,
that was when this interview took off. Yeah, for you,
you started to get.
Speaker 3 (58:47):
You started to yell, I was the jackass. That's why
I took off because you were yelling at me.
Speaker 2 (58:53):
I can't wait to tell everybody that was you. Everybody
was really upset about that. I remember, because I think
we do we want to do Fuller House at the time, right,
it was that was it was just a how many
years ago was that Bobby book?
Speaker 3 (59:03):
Like six I think or something like that.
Speaker 2 (59:05):
Yeah, I think we were done.
Speaker 4 (59:06):
But I remember everybody getting very upset, and I was
going to make some calls.
Speaker 3 (59:11):
And do you just forgot or what?
Speaker 2 (59:15):
Ye oh, I got a call?
Speaker 3 (59:16):
Who are you gonna call exactly? I?
Speaker 4 (59:18):
Yes?
Speaker 3 (59:19):
Okay, okay, final final question, Sure, last one. This is
seriously the last one. We're going to answer it seriously. No, No,
I got dinner to eat. Okay, listen, Okay, how did
they tell you the Full House was coming to an end?
Speaker 2 (59:34):
You know? It was? It was it. We didn't know
it shouldn't have come to an end because it was
in the top fifteen or twenty. When when it you know,
when there was still millions of people watching it. They
were kind of like, we think it's going to be canceled.
They wanted to go to the w B. The WB
was a new thing. They said movie we would do
(59:55):
ano the w B, and I'm like, maybe we won't.
I was sort of ready to go, and I think
the tw we're ready to move on too. So they
said that we asked for too much money. That wasn't it.
They wanted to go to the w B, and w
B was like or the CW one of those. I
think it was maybe the WB and do it for
cheaper or whatever. And so we didn't, and so we
sort of shot it. We shot an episode and then
(01:00:19):
we so we didn't really know what was ending. That's
why it wasn't like a great last ending show. It
was just kind of like I think Michelle fell off
a horse or something. And you know, it wasn't like
we it wasn't like we geared up, you know for
the final like some of the great last episodes of television.
You know, we just kind of just sort of threw
it together and it was what it was.
Speaker 3 (01:00:38):
Did you ever see the last episode of alf.
Speaker 2 (01:00:41):
Did he die? No?
Speaker 3 (01:00:42):
That he came and got him? And yeah, when they
were supposed to do another season and then they didn't
really get to finish the season, so everybody just remembered
alf being taken by the government, right.
Speaker 2 (01:00:55):
And he was going to come back and he didn't
come back. They should have done that with the Also,
it should have just taken them. The government should have
come and taken them. You know, those guys in suits,
and you know, hopefully they will come back. But it
was it was. Yeah, it was a sort of abrupt
you know.
Speaker 3 (01:01:15):

This guy, Ryan, he goes non so he did when
we were on Idol together. He did give me money advice,
which I thought was super nice of him.

He's a great guy. I've known him for thirty years.

He pulled me aside and was like, now that you're
making money, do you know what to do with it?
And I said I don't really. I mean, I kind
of goes. You have to have people you trust, and
he walked me through a whole thing, and I was
very grateful for that. Yeah. I thought it was super
cool of him.
