This is Feeling Things with Amy and Kat.
Speaker 3 (00:33):
Happy Thursday, Welcome to Couch Chalks the Q and a
episode to our Feeling Things podcast. I'm Amy and it's
just me today. Kat is not here for this quick
little intro. If you listen on Tuesday, then you know
that things are a little hectic in Nashville where we live.
I haven't had power for almost a week now. Well
(00:55):
by the time you're listening to this, I really hope
I have it back, but it's really certain if that's
going to be the case even next week. But I
don't currently have power, and we would be recording this together,
but I'm on a completely different side of town, staying
with a friend and staying warm and if you listen
(01:17):
on Tuesday, you know that we recorded episodes and then
the audio was lost. We recorded them on Zoom, so
then we had to have Houston throw together a best of.
But we did a little quick intro for it that
had some extra content in there for you, and that's
sort of what I'm doing for you right now with
Couch Talks. The episode will be a best of. I
(01:40):
don't know what Houston's gonna pull or i'd tease you
about it. But back in the day, when Kat would
join me on my Four Things podcast for the Q
and A episode of that, it was called the Fifth Thing,
and we would start every Fifth Thing episode with a quote.
So I've got but several quotes here that I'm going
(02:02):
to share with you from our Feeling Things podcast page
that Kat put up late last week, and I just
pulled up the memes the quotes, and I'm going to
run through them for you in case they are something
that you need to hear at the moment. And then
I hope that the Q and A episode, if you
(02:22):
choose to keep listening, is maybe one you haven't heard before,
maybe you missed it, and whatever the listener wrote in
about or left a voicemail about it's something that will
be helpful for you in your life. Maybe it'll be
just what you needed to hear. The first little meme
quote thing that I'm going to share is, girl, you
(02:42):
got to try this healing potion. It's called diet coke.
And I kid you not. I'm recording this right now
sitting on a bed, my hair in a wet bun
because I just took a shower and washed my hair
and it felt so good. And when I was in
the shower, I was thinking, when I leave to go
run some errands, I am stopping to get a diet coke.
(03:04):
Because while my clean hair is definitely going to help
me feel better than all of this, a diet coke
is just going to hit the spot. And that's why
this little meme is so perfect. So if you yourself
need a little healing potion, maybe go get yourself a
diet coke. The next quote I'm going to share is,
(03:27):
sorry I'm late. Traffic is exactly how it's been every
day for the last five years, and I was not
expecting that. Ah, that's kind of funny to me. I
have traffic blindness sometimes mixed in with my time blindness.
This is from Snoopy and Charlie Brown. It's like a
picture of Charlie Brown sitting on a dock and Snoopy.
(03:47):
Maybe you've seen the cartoon before, but Charlie Brown is saying,
someday we will all die Snoopy, and Snoopy replies, true,
but on all the other days not. So that's a
little gentle reminder to live your life.
Speaker 1 (04:06):
I needed that.
Speaker 3 (04:07):
Now I'm recording this before January's ending, Like literally, today
is the last day of January, so by the time
you hear this, it's going to already be a February.
But I thought this name was hilarious. It's a picture
of the old lady from the Titanic. Well, you know
the character from Titanic. What's her name, Kate Winslett. But
what's the character's name? Rose?
Speaker 1 (04:28):
Is a Rose?
Speaker 3 (04:28):
Yeah, I believe it's an image of her, you know,
when she's the old lady in the movie. And it
says it's the last day of January. It's been eighty
four years, which I am very thankful that February is
on the horizon, and I'm hoping it is a very
different vibe, very different energy than January was because yes,
(04:49):
that felt like a very long month, or it has
felt like a very long month. This week that I'm
in has felt like a year already, which I've seen
memes like that, We're like, man, this week has been
a really long year. I think we can all relate
to that at times. The next quote is you're so
self aware, thanks, it's ruining my life. So sometimes I
(05:14):
think it's fun or maybe would be better off to
be a little oblivious to what's going on, which reminds
me of something that I saw someone post the other
day of like, if you're worried about what other people
are thinking about you, you need to remember the ten
the rule of ten. There are three people that like you,
there are three people that don't like you, and there
(05:34):
are four people that aren't even paying attention. So just
remember the rule of ten. If you're trying to decide
on whether or not you should post something, talk about something,
do something, chase a dream, and you have doubts or
what people are going to think of you x y Z,
just remember the rule of ten. You're going to have
(05:54):
your rider dies that are by your side no matter what.
Those three people they like you, they're going to be
there for you no.
Speaker 1 (05:59):
Matter what you do.
Speaker 3 (06:01):
Then you're gonna have the three people that are the naysayers.
They hate you, they don't like you, They're not gonna
like you no matter what you do. So okay, fine,
And then the rest of the people are not even
paying attention. They're just not so go do your dang thing.
Doing stuff is hard. This meme is from my therapist
says she always has really good memes that she puts
up doing stuff is hard. Shout out to anyone who
(06:23):
does anything like washing my hair today that I was
doing something for myself and now I'm about to do
the real hard task because after I record this, the
washing of it is actually not that hard. It's the
blow drying of it. But that is where I shall
later know my reward is coming, which is my special potion,
my diet coke. And then lastly, the quote is or
(06:47):
the meme sorry if I'm sorry, if I seem anxious,
I've been paying attention. So again, maybe it's more fun
sometimes to be one of the four people that totally
aren't paying attention. That quote was more so the rule
of ten. They may be paying attention, like what's going
on in the world, but they may not be paying
attention to you, so don't really care exactly what you're doing.
(07:10):
And sometimes we can overthink what we're going to what
we want to do because of what others are going
to think. And the truth is they're just not thinking
about us. So do what you want to do. Hope
you enjoyed the quotes, the memes, and wherever you are,
you are warm and safe and your February is off
to a great start. Ish and hopefully Kat and I
(07:32):
will be back together on Tuesday for a fresh new
Feeling Things episode. In the meantime, we would love to
hear from you. You can email us Hey, They're at
Feeling Things podcast dot com, connect with us on socials,
Feeling Things Podcast on Instagram and TikTok. All right, how
the day you need to have? And here is the
(07:53):
best of that Houston put together for you. Bye, Happy Thursday.
Welcome to couch Chalks the Q and a episode of
our Feeling Things podcast. I'm Amy and I'm Kat.
Speaker 2 (08:06):
And quick disclaimer before we get into today's question that
although we're answering your questions and I'm a therapist, this
does not substitute for actual therapy.
Speaker 1 (08:15):
Yeah, but it can always help, and we hope it does.
Speaker 3 (08:17):
Yeah, make sure to consult like an expert that knows
all the details of your life. Yes, we don't have
all the bits and pieces. This is from a listener
named s Mmm mysterious. Hey, Amy and Kat would love
to get y'all's thoughts on how to get out of
my rut. I feel like I've checked the boxes, travel, marriage, kids, house,
(08:38):
but now I don't know what's next. I'm okay with
this season of life being mundane for me. Groceries, diapers, carpool,
playground with the kids. These are not bad things, and
I'm not apathetic or ungrateful. I love my family and friends.
I have a beautiful home with great neighbors. I enjoy
watching my children go into awesome little people. But I
feel stuck, uninspired. I guess I'm having an early midlife crisis.
(09:04):
I'm in my mid thirties. Is this the feeling that
drives people to sign up for a marathon or learn? Pickaball?
Thanks for the thoughts, s which before Kat, you give
some of your therapy type thoughts. We do have an
update from a listener that wrote in with their feelings
about their life like the situation they were in. They
had a lot of anxiety about XYZ. And after we
(09:28):
talk about S for a little bit, I have a
fun voicemail update to play like. We love hearing updates
from y'all. So even if it's months later, because this
months have gone by and she called with an update,
So make sure you call and give us an update.
The phone numbers and the show notes. You can send
an email with an update. Doesn't have to be a voicemail,
(09:49):
but all of that infos in the show notes, So
make sure you keep us posted. And so when it
comes to S, this reminds me of the question we
got recently about the like twenty seven phase of life.
She was a twenty seven year old, and this just
goes to show that in your mid thirties, you're gonna
feel like, right, what is happening now? These are different
(10:12):
scenarios for sure, and I love that she's not feeling
apathetic towards her life, but she is just feeling a
little bit more.
Speaker 1 (10:20):
Like what now?
Speaker 3 (10:21):
What now?
Speaker 4 (10:21):
Well?
Speaker 2 (10:22):
I think that also, along with that other episode we did,
part of this is tied to this idea that throughout
our lives we always have these like big things in
front of us. We graduate, then maybe we go to college,
then we meet somebody, or then we get our dream job,
we buy a house, we have kids, we move like
we have these things that we're constantly looking forward to
that we think are going to I don't complete the circle.
(10:45):
And then we get those things and we might enjoy them,
but then it still feels like there is something that
has not yet been reached. I think part of that
is just from growing up in a culture that's constantly
telling us to reach for something more. We're constantly telling
us that the next thing is going to be the
thing that.
Speaker 1 (11:00):
Makes you happy.
Speaker 2 (11:02):
And also part of that is in different phases of
our life, I think we need to find new things
that bring us joy. And it sounds like she's in
this phase of her life where she has all these
things that she enjoys, but she wants. I don't want
to put words in her mouth, but there might be
something more that you want for yourself.
Speaker 3 (11:23):
And I don't know that it's a marathon, just saying
it could be, though it could be, and for some
people that's great. I just my own personal experience with
a marathon.
Speaker 1 (11:32):
But I think that yeah, for a certain person.
Speaker 2 (11:34):
A marathon, yes, for a certain person, pick a ball, yes,
But that's what I try so many hobbies. I'm constantly
trying to like start something new, or learn something new,
or go somewhere new, because I do think that if
we want spark and joy and fun in our lives,
we do have to constantly create it.
Speaker 1 (11:52):
It doesn't just knock on our door and we open
it and it comes in. We create those moments for ourselves.
Your nails look pretty, thanks they're red. I don't really
do add very often.
Speaker 3 (12:03):
Yeah, And I say that because one of your hobbies
is nails.
Speaker 1 (12:07):
Yeah, and I had.
Speaker 2 (12:09):
I went and picked up my niece yesterday and brought
her over and did her nails. And like, that's something
that I which was really fun, And that's something I
wouldn't have done if I didn't have this hobby that.
Speaker 1 (12:18):
I started reading.
Speaker 3 (12:19):
Order all the nail stuff on Amazon. Yes, and they
give your own little salon in your kitchen. Yeah. And yeah,
you do do other people's nails, like you're saying with
your niece, but like friends, you've offered to do mine
multiple times.
Speaker 1 (12:32):
Yeah, you've never said, because I just I.
Speaker 3 (12:35):
Realized I'm not a nails person, although I did have
them done last September, September twenty twenty four and it's October.
Speaker 1 (12:43):
Well we got when did we get pedicures?
Speaker 3 (12:45):
That that was August we got pedicures. Yeah, so that's around.
I got a pedicure same, which is sad because I
do enjoy pedicures, manicures not so much. And at September
of last year, for iHeart Festival, I got these nails
with like tips and I did like a French with
(13:06):
like a chrome talk like they're very edgy. And I
came across a video the other day of me with
those nails, and I was like, whoa, I have a
different energy, Like those are cool, and I feel way
more cool in that video than I do now.
Speaker 4 (13:20):
And so.
Speaker 3 (13:22):
I don't want to take the time to get those nails,
and I didn't want to upkeep them, but I feel
like I do have a different vibe about me when
I have them, and so maybe I need to pay
more attention to my nails because sort of like you
know we've talked about with you know, clean hair, there's
just something that you can do that's just like an
instant game changer of like good gets you out of
(13:44):
your ruts, Like what if I'm missing out by being
you know, short nail, no paint girl.
Speaker 1 (13:51):
What would your name be if you had long chrome
nails all the time.
Speaker 3 (13:55):
With Tina, I was.
Speaker 1 (14:11):
Okay. Well, so that also could be something that she does.
It could just literally be I go and like get
fun color.
Speaker 2 (14:18):
I've talked about those with clients a lot, where they
are always whether it's dressing some way or getting their
hair done some way, or choosing the same nail color
over and over again, just because it's like what they
do when it's the thing that it's it's the color
they thought their hair was supposed to be. It's the
colors they think they're supposed to have up work because
they're supposed to be professional. Even like the frame of
glasses that you wear and allowing yourself to go pick
(14:40):
something different brings some different energy into their life. Like
one of my clients getting like purple nails one day
was like the coolest thing ever because you always had
a neutral and that felt more like her. So it
could be something before he's done it for a marathon,
maybe change up, wear more color in your wardrobe or
something like that.
Speaker 3 (15:01):
Well, there's dopamine dressing, which we've talked about before, which
you know, just adding little pops things that you know
help you feel good. And yeah, maybe it is that
you sign up for something like you start running over
your friends, join a book club or listen to some
audiobooks and then talk to some friends about it. Because
(15:23):
I would imagine at a mom as with all she
is going on in her life, she may not have
a lot of time for sit down reading.
Speaker 1 (15:29):
But well, I you just maybe think of two things.
Speaker 2 (15:32):
One I want to say this too, like all this
stuff that gets you out of her rent doesn't have
to be like as big as a marathon or as
big of like you go on a crazy vacation or
you dye your hair.
Speaker 1 (15:43):
Blonde or something like that.
Speaker 2 (15:45):
It can be little mundane things like you said, the books,
me listening to audiobooks and going on walks listening to
audiobooks and me becoming a book girl has brought a
whole different like world to me, different kinds of conversations
I can have with friends, just a different way to escape.
So that's one thing.
Speaker 3 (16:03):
Why did you get you get becoming a book girl?
Speaker 1 (16:06):
Because I've never been a book girl, Because I don't
I don't read. I don't like curling up with a
book and reading. I get bored. I can't do it.
Speaker 2 (16:14):
But if I'm doing something like going on a walk
or cleaning my house and painting doors at my house,
I can listen to that and then I can be there's.
Speaker 1 (16:22):
A way to be a book girl for everybody.
Speaker 3 (16:24):
Yeah, because listening to audiobooks still counts in my act.
In my book, it counts as.
Speaker 2 (16:29):
A read accessibility. The other thing that you said, you
said book club. I don't think I'm going to join
a book club. But what I have wanted to do
Bunco club.
Speaker 4 (16:40):
Oh.
Speaker 3 (16:40):
I played Bunko for Gracie's birthday last month, and it
was so fun.
Speaker 2 (16:44):
My parents were in a Bunco club when they're my age,
Like they would go to different people's houses.
Speaker 1 (16:49):
So I've never played the game you're saying.
Speaker 3 (16:51):
I had it either, and it was really fun. Like she,
I was a little lost at first, but then once
you get it down, they're like, Okay, this is fun.
And I was losing, but I still had fun.
Speaker 1 (17:03):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (17:03):
So having little like nights like that, the cinema Sundays
that I started with my friends, how's that going well?
Speaker 1 (17:11):
Where it paused because the second Sunday we did, did
I tell you what movie it was? I think I did?
It was, Oh, what's the one with the clown Dark Knight?
Two of the people backed.
Speaker 2 (17:24):
Out last minute, so we were like put it on
a pause because maybe it felt like too much for people.
But we're gonna start it again.
Speaker 3 (17:31):
I mean football started back.
Speaker 1 (17:33):
Yeah, it's a lot. It was summer like it was
hard to night football.
Speaker 3 (17:36):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (17:37):
So but that is a really like we just made
that up and it is really fun and a good idea,
and so steal it before you again sign up for a.
Speaker 3 (17:45):
Mairthont and so that in a nutshell in case someone
missed that episode for and you could just do like
one cinema night. It doesn't even have to be every
Friday week. Yeah, but you host and there's a whole theme,
but the people coming don't know what's going to be
shown or do you know.
Speaker 2 (18:02):
No, they don't know, right, They don't even know the
theme until they get there. And it's what we've done
is like you, whoever's hosting, is you cook a meal
with a.
Speaker 1 (18:12):
Theme of that movie.
Speaker 2 (18:13):
You don't like decorate or like dress up or anything.
You just cook a meal or maybe a drink or
a dessert or something like that that has to do
with that movie, and then they guess what the movie
is while you're eating the meal, and then.
Speaker 4 (18:24):
You watch it.
Speaker 3 (18:24):
Didn't we make some deal that you're supposed to watch
pretty Woman or something?
Speaker 1 (18:27):
Yeah, to to watch something I forgot.
Speaker 3 (18:31):
I'm happy to honor it. I just don't remember it was.
Speaker 1 (18:34):
We had two weeks. I think I've so one more.
Speaker 3 (18:36):
Week, Milan long. I still don't want to watch Molan.
Speaker 1 (18:40):
Ok, we're going to cancel the deal.
Speaker 3 (18:42):
No, have you watched Pretty Warning? Why wouldn't you want
to watch Pretty Woman? It's one of the best movies ever,
you know, I don't like I was thinking of I
it's not old. It's from nineteen ninety.
Speaker 1 (18:52):
Oh my gosh.
Speaker 2 (18:52):
I somebody sent me this TikTok or a reel or something.
The other day that was people were asking, like, what
what you're If you're born in what year does it
consider you old?
Speaker 1 (19:03):
How do I say that? Does that make sense? And
people were saying, like nineteen ninety seven.
Speaker 4 (19:10):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (19:11):
They're like, if you don't have a two hundred of
your birth year, then you're old.
Speaker 3 (19:16):
Yeah, we were born in the ninth, that's twenty five
years old is.
Speaker 2 (19:19):
Not old though, if you're born in nineteen niney nine,
if you're like twenty six or that's not old.
Speaker 4 (19:25):
I know.
Speaker 3 (19:25):
I just think to them it sounds old because it's
not two thousands. So it's like, even though it's not
that far apart, for some, it just sounds more like
imagine if we were born in the nineteen hundreds and
we were like, whoa, you were born in eighteen ninety yikes,
Like it just sounds that is true. Like let's say
(19:45):
it was night you were born in the nineteen hundred.
Let's say it was nineteen twenty five, and we were
asked that, and we'd be like, oh my gosh, you
were born in eighteen hundreds.
Speaker 1 (19:53):
That is crazy that like we were born in the
nineteen hundreds.
Speaker 3 (19:56):
Yeah, were.
Speaker 1 (19:58):
Sounds like the Gilded Age at this point.
Speaker 3 (20:00):
Yeah, oh, look at you. You're the one bringing it
at this time. Well, we do have an update from
McKenzie that I teased about a minute ago, and we
love this kind of update because she wrote in for
couch Talks, we gave some advice. Something that I shared
was actually from my boyfriend's dad. Something he had shared
(20:22):
with my boyfriend when his wife at the time was
going through cancer colon cancer at a very young age,
like she was diagnosed at forty two, passed away at
forty four, very unexpected. They had three kids, Like it
just was during the two years that she had the cancer,
there was a lot that he was anxious about and
worried about, and they didn't know what they were facing
(20:43):
and who knows, maybe she was going to have a
chance to make a recovery. But his dad would just
encourage him, like, you have a lot that you're juggling
right now. Soon she need to be in the present
moment and wait to worry wtw And so that is
where we landed with Mackenzie and sharing some of our
advice with her, and this is her beautiful update.
Speaker 4 (21:05):
Hey Kat and Amy, this is Mackenzie. I had called
back like almost seven months ago when I first found
out that I was pregnant, and I wanted to give
an update that I am now in my third trimester.
I don't know if y'all remember, but my husband's currently
deployed and I am well into my first couple of
(21:28):
months of PA school and everything is going great. Baby
Cody is due December twenty first, and I just want
to thank you guys for your advice on wait to Worry.
I found it very helpful. And I also wanted to
say that my new feeling and what's kind of getting
(21:50):
me through this last little part of knowing that I'm
going to be doing labor and my husband needs to
come back and everything. But my current mantra is what
if it all works out? And so I just want
to thank you guys for playing a part in my
story being so supportive. And I can't wait to continue
(22:13):
to listen to you guys and listen with Cody around
come December. So thank you guys so much.
Speaker 3 (22:20):
Chat too, love it, love getting updates and her sharing
that is reminding other people that you're going to go
through different seasons. And yeah, she was nervous and anxious
about starting peace school and being pregnant and her husband
being deployed, and now she's living it out and she's like, oh,
(22:42):
it's all I'm waiting to worry.
Speaker 1 (22:44):
What if it all works out?
Speaker 3 (22:45):
What if it all works out? And now she's passing
that wisdom along to other people. Did you have something
framed with that? No, that's not you. What if it
all works out maybe I did at your office, or
what if it goes well or something like that. You're
not saying, like, you know, there's some signs that say
(23:07):
it always works out for me or whatever, and it's
like yours was more of a question of like what
if things go well? I feel like it was a
really like a flower picture and then there was letters over.
Speaker 1 (23:18):
It that was it said it's gonna be okay.
Speaker 3 (23:23):
Well, what if it's gonna be okay?
Speaker 1 (23:26):
But we have a lot of like so we might
have something similar somewhere else. I just can't think of
it right now.
Speaker 3 (23:31):
Well that works too, Yeah it's gonna be okay.
Speaker 1 (23:34):
Maybe question mark what if it's gonna be okay?
Speaker 4 (23:39):
And might not?
Speaker 1 (23:41):
But wait to worry about that.
Speaker 3 (23:43):
Yeah, cross that bridge when you get there, you know,
just start building the bridge now a little bit, brick
by brick, step by step, step by step, day by
one day at a time.
Speaker 1 (23:53):
There's probably something that says that in my office somewhere.
Speaker 3 (23:55):
One day at a time.
Speaker 2 (23:56):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (23:57):
I have to remind myself of that often, one day
at a time. Okay. Thank you s for the email,
Thank you Mackenzie for the update. Thank you everybody else listening.
