Specialist Police staff have been brought into Wellington to help investigate the Loafer's Lodge fire that claimed six lives.

Built in 1971, it didn't have sprinklers - and wasn't required to.

Now there's talk that the fire could bring change to the building code.

The lodge had a Building Warrant of Fitness issued this March - and no concerns were raised by the independent inspector.

Fire Engineer Michael Belsham says sprinklers are important for saving lives, particularly in places where people sleep.

But he says they can't be put in every building.
