Speaker 1 (00:07):
You're listening to the Wellington Mornings podcast with Nick Mills
from news Talk said B taking the pulse of the city.
The gaviital letter on news Talk said B.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
It's time. It's time to actually bring Georgina Campbell and
she's Wellington's issues reporter. Good morning, Georgina, good morning. Okay,
if anybody knows what's going on with the poor old
Pity Fairy, you're the one that knows what's the latest.
You've got all these papers in front of you and
they've got letter heads on them, so come on, tell

(00:40):
us what's going on.

Speaker 3 (00:41):
I've printed out all my stories because there are so
many fairy stories. I'm nervous I won't be able to
keep up with them as I try and tell you
all the latest information. But I did get an update
from Kiwi Row last night about the d Terry Fairy,
so it remains under a detention order in Picton, but
Kimi Rawl said that it's made good progress with the

(01:01):
work that is needed before it is able to return
to service. So there are they haven't found any hule
breach in any part of the vessel. Over the weekend.
They've had international experts fly in from Norway, Singapore and
Australia having a look at the Fury, and the Class

(01:22):
Surveyor has also been on board and importantly has provided
sign off for the Fury. So that's a crucial step
towards getting out of terry able to leave Picton and
return to service. Now the final decision is made by
Maritime New Zealand, which needs to be satisfied that the
ship is safe to sail before lifting its detention order. Also,

(01:45):
of course we've got inter Islander sailings canceled because of
bad weather. Blue Bridge has also canceled passenger sailings, so
there's quite a lot going on and it's not ideal,
is it having one Fury in maintenance, one ferry under
a detention order and the other Fury unable to sail
because of bad weather.

Speaker 2 (02:05):
So how long? I mean, this is a silly question
to ask, but I'll ask you anyway, because no one
knows more about the inter Islanders and knew how long
will it take to get rid of the backlog? I mean,
are they're talking weeks? So are they talking days? I mean,
you normally have three fairies, now you've got none. So
there's going to be a hell of a backlog, isn't it.

Speaker 3 (02:21):
Yeah, they seem pretty confident that there will actually not
be any backlog.

Speaker 2 (02:28):
Okay, so remembering we've got school holidays next week two ways,
so they need to get the Teddy going before that,
don't they.

Speaker 3 (02:35):
No, not necessarily. I think it would be a very
different situation if it was summer, you know, like it
is traditionally a quieter period of time. They'll have Kayatahi
back on Saturday for the start of the school holidays.
The weather should have calmed down by then, so they'll
have two fairies going and they say that they've been
able to offer all affected passengers are booking on a

(02:57):
Saturday sailing from the cancelations.

Speaker 2 (02:59):
Okay, good, Well, I've got an old truck that I've
sold someone from down South Sport and so they want
to get it on the ferry and get it over there.
I said, well get it over there right now. So
just hold on. There's been quite a few exits from
the Kiri Rail board. What's going what's the latest with
that one?

Speaker 1 (03:14):
George, Yes, So this.

Speaker 3 (03:18):
Is a development that happened just last night. I was scrambling.
Two ky Raw directors have resigned from the board and
this is after Finance Minister Nikola Willis warned a refresh
was coming, which is sort of a polite way of
saying that people are cleaning jobs.

Speaker 2 (03:37):
Refresh.

Speaker 3 (03:38):
These resignations, of course, come after the arditory ran aground,
and also as the future of inter Islander hangs in
the balance. So the directors who resigned a Rachel Pin,
she's a transport consultant, and Ed Sim's he is the
former chief executive of Canadian airline west Jet. Now their
resignations come, of course after the chairman, David McClain announced

(04:01):
his early retirement, or rather ministers announced his early retirement.
For so, yeah, there's already a lot of change in
the board. And this is you know, as far as
we know of their own accord putting in there resull.

Speaker 2 (04:17):
I mean, this is my comment, not yours. But when
I read this little bit of CVS or the information
about the two board members that left, they were reasonably
high quality board members. So I mean, you know, I'm
not putting words in your mouth, and I'm not saying
that was just my layman's look at the mother. Oh
that's not like Joe Smith or Tom Jones or you know,

(04:37):
Sally Field. You know it's pretty well known people.

Speaker 1 (04:40):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (04:40):
I had a lot too last night just having a
look at their credentials, and you know, they certainly have
good credentials. But I think it's fair to say that
kemy Row is not in great shape. No, and Minister
for State Owned Enterprises Paul Goldsmith said that a search
for a replacement board chair is underway and that work

(05:01):
is being progressed urgently. He says they're evaluating potential skill
gaps on the board, so ministers obviously think that there
are some skill gaps there with a view to bringing
in new members.

Speaker 2 (05:13):
Right, Okay, let's move on. Because you had a pretty
sad story over the weekend. Run us through it. I
hate sad stories.

Speaker 3 (05:20):
Yeah, I just wanted to draw people's attention to this story.
It's about a fifteen year old Wellington teenager who name's Julia,
and she has Elu's dan loss syndrome. So she was
a teenager who loved competitive cheerleading, violin and debating. She
can no longer eat or drink because of this syndrome

(05:44):
and urgently needs surgery that's not available in New Zealand,
so her family have set up I give a little
page they need to raise one hundred and forty thousand
dollars for Julia to have this highly specialized surgery. And
I spoke to her mum on the phone on Saturday,
and you know it was heartbreaking, you know. Her mum said, look,
there's nothing worse than seeing your child suffer like this,

(06:05):
and if only she could should take all her problems
upon herself and just have Julia happy again. So that
story is up on the Herald, or you can search
her Give a Little Page if anybody wants to.

Speaker 2 (06:17):
Can you also give that to Ethan so we can
put it on our Facebook page so people have heard
your story on it today can look it up and
that so that we can help help and assist with
that as well.

Speaker 3 (06:26):
Yeah, that'd be great.

Speaker 2 (06:27):
Yeah, that's terrible. How far has she got with her
Give a Little Page have we seen? Have you seen
any updates on it?

Speaker 3 (06:32):
Well? When I looked at the Give a Little Page
before writing the story, there was about five thousand dollars.
It had only just been set up. But since the
story was published it's almost at fifty thousand dollars, which
is pretty amazing. And good on you, good on you generous.

Speaker 2 (06:49):
Yeah, well, that's down to you, and that's you doing
an article and getting people's attention to it. And if
we can help on our show as well to your story,
then we would love to do that. I mean, let
anything to save somebody's life and give them the opportunity.
We've got to try and support, don't we as an organiz.

Speaker 3 (07:07):
Yeah, if we can, we.

Speaker 2 (07:09):
Will, will publicize it and we'll let people know and
we'll keep it up to date. Ethan will keep up
us up to date on a daily basis until we
get there and we'll bring you into it's currently at
forty nine thousand. We've what Ethan's already found out, so
we'll have all that information on our Warrington Morning's Facebook page.
And also if you want to just google Georgina Campbell
and the article will come up. I'm pretty sure it will,

(07:31):
and then you'll be able to read the whole story.
And if we can just to gather some momentum more awareness,
then we'd love to help.

Speaker 3 (07:39):
Thank you, Nat, I appreciate that, and I know Julia's
family has been blown away by people's generosity.

Speaker 2 (07:45):
Oh well, I know that that would have been really
tough on you, and doing stories like that's always tough,
but if we can help in any way, we will.
Thanks Georgina Campbell.
