Speaker 1 (00:00):
From the cricket field to the cow shed. It's the
Country Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly on Gold Sport on
the Show.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
Now we are heading to the fields of Iowa to
catch up with our favorite farmer from Owassa in Iowa.
He's a farmer of corn, sawyer beans and hereford cattle.
Colin Johnson joins us.
Speaker 1 (00:19):
Morning Colin, Good morning, DK. How are you all look.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
Very very well? Thank you? Hey, put us on the map.
I know we've spoken in the past, but exactly we're
in Iowa. Is Owassa.
Speaker 1 (00:31):
Kind of right north central, right almost in the middle
of the state, kind of between a couple cities of
Fort Dodge and Waterloo, and then about an hour and
a half from north of the capital of Des Moines.
So we're kind of right in the heartland of Iowa
and right in the heartland of the Midwest.
Speaker 2 (00:49):
Fantastic and of course it's famous for what at this time,
your corn, sawyer beans, and you do farm a little
bit of hereford.
Speaker 1 (00:56):
Cattle, yes, yes, the predominantly for sure row crop and
corn and soybeans and not much cattle country. But if
we can find a little bit of pasture, yeah, we've
got some herb for cattle ourselves, and and and there
there is a little bit of cattle out there, but
you get into southern Aisle where there's even more. But
(01:17):
around us it's it's predominantly row crops.
Speaker 2 (01:20):
So, how has summer been, because you're sort of you know,
I guess coming to near the end of Summer's it
been a good summer for you guys on the farm?
Speaker 1 (01:28):
Yeah, it's really been actually a pretty good summer. We
started out real dry when we started spring planning, got
a break in there where we were just flooded with
a bunch of rain and and really even Northwest Isle
was a lot worse than what we were, but we
had a bunch of rain that kind of slowed things down,
and that really put a lot of stress on the
crops that were in the ground and then potentially what
(01:51):
was being still yet to plant. So otherwise, once we've
got past the spring, and really we've had good timely rains,
hasn't been over hot, had some cool nights really to
uh to help the stress of those plants and growing,
and and now we're just kind of looking for a
little bit more growing degree days to finish out the crops.
(02:12):
Finish out the turnals and the corn and put some
pods on the soybeans. Until otherwise it's been yeah, very
very good weather for our crops and even cattle and
pastures as well, So I can't complain too.
Speaker 2 (02:26):
Much about that cost wise. How how's the monetary situation
for farmers at the moment? You're still feeling in a
wee bit.
Speaker 1 (02:34):
Yeah, we're feeling it a little bit. It hasn't been
too bad. We've been uh uh experiencing a little bit
of lack of prices falling a little bit, so that's
kind of been helping. Uh. Of course, our our inputs
here have been flowing downwards with grain prices kind of
getting back to their harvest prices and and and taking
(02:54):
a tumble a little bit, so that's kind of affecting things.
But you're starting to see a little bit of the
the uh inputs of well kind of going down and
so that does help. And and it'll probably kind of
trend that way a little bit through the winner into
the prefaiy kind of time period of what we call it,
and so we'll kind of start seeing that and then
you might see it ramp up a little bit too.
So but otherwise hasn't been too good and been pretty
(03:17):
uh pretty good for US.
Speaker 2 (03:19):
Gas prices, are they they okay? Over there?
Speaker 1 (03:23):
Yeah, it hasn't been It hasn't been too bad. You know,
felt pretty steady. You know. It'll be kind of interesting
now that we were getting closer to November and the election.
You know, it always kind of seems like that spurs
some some prices as well, you know, whether that's gas
or corn. So, I mean, you know that kind of stuff.
So those will be kind of some numbers to look at.
Speaker 2 (03:45):
We're talking about the election. Very interesting developments over there
in the past couple of months now with a new
Democratic candidate for prison. So how are you guys sort
of how are you looking at all that?
Speaker 1 (03:58):
Well? Yeah, I mean the last time you and I talked, boy,
things have really changed over for us for sure, and
so so yeah, but it's it's really I don't know,
it's kind of make it it's kind of made a turn.
H I don't know if it's uh for the for
the best or for worse, you know, I haven't we
haven't quite figured out yet. But it'll definitely make for
an interesting election and uh, maybe even more of a
(04:21):
heated race, I'd almost say.
Speaker 2 (04:23):
Yeah, absolutely, you mean Chenope. Two, you're off to the
Iowa Stite Fair this weekend. Where's that being hilled?
Speaker 1 (04:30):
Yeah, that's down in Des Moines. So, like I said,
about an hour and a half from we're gonna go
down and exhibit to her for calves and so we'll
we'll go down tomorrow for the next three days and uh,
that's been going on since last Wednesday, and then it'll
come through this this Sunday, so about ten days total.
And it's they've had phenomenal weather down there in the
(04:52):
attendance has been just through the roof so far already.
So I'm sure it'll continue to be that way. I
know that past weekend we were able to go down
and there was there was a lot of people down there.
Speaker 2 (05:04):
Fantastic And of course on the back of the Olympics,
the team will be coming home. Now. Have you been
following the Olympics and Team USA fairly closely?
Speaker 1 (05:12):
Yeah, it's been a it's been a fun Olympics, uh
to watch as far as you know, all all ten
days or two weeks or whatever it was of it,
it was, Uh, it was a lot of fun to
watch and We kind of followed along about as much
as we could. It was a little bit different time
frame for us, hours wise, but uh otherwise, we got
(05:32):
to kind of watch quite a few events and follow up.
Speaker 2 (05:35):
Fantastic Well Colin, enjoy the Iowa state fear great to
give up some of your valuable time. Nice to chat mate.
Have a great day.
Speaker 1 (05:43):
Yeah, I appreciate it. BK, thank you so much.
