Live commentary of the Bummings n PC on iHeartRadio and
Gold Sport, Go Gold Gold Sport. Around one of the
twenty twenty four season finishes up Tonight out of Rota
or International Stadium, bay A play Steamers up against Counties
Manikar Steelers. Joining us on the show this morning. Steamers
head coach Richard Watt, What a good morning, look very

(00:24):
very well. I think it's going to be a little
bit chilli and rote e raw tonight. Isn't it for
the match?

Speaker 2 (00:28):
Oh?

Speaker 1 (00:29):
Chris, you said get the boys out early this morning
just to acclimatize themselves to the weather.

Speaker 2 (00:37):
That would be nice to see. Niceo, mate, when this
is no one.

Speaker 1 (00:44):
Yeah, that's absolutely right. So before we talk about tonight's clash,
Waddy last Saturday kicked off the season with a thirty
six twenty one win over Wycato And when I spoke
to you prior to that match, you're a bit concerned.
You'd lost a couple of key players through injury, so
you would have pretty happy with how the boys played.

Speaker 2 (01:02):
You know, we're pretty struggling. That effort, mate, The boys
half was good. It's just good to see that they
were pretty hard of the preseason. We had three weeks
with them, and it's just try to see all the
work we've put it and come to fruish and under
pressure in a big game.

Speaker 1 (01:18):
You know, they obviously knew they were going in and
playing a tough, tough side, so you had to get
everything right. I think, you know, discipline was something that
kept white Kato in the game. So has that been
a bit of a key work on this week?

Speaker 2 (01:32):
I reviewed, mate, he had a five penalties in the minutes,
so we can't we can't carry on going through the
campaign down and that's for pressure. But I mean that
we worked quite hard on our defense, Peggy, and oh
yes we got to pressure. It's quite ten minutes. They

(01:55):
had one hundred percent position.

Speaker 1 (01:58):
Yeah, I mean I watched that game and I was
a little bit worried for the Bay because they were
camped on your line, weren't they.

Speaker 2 (02:04):
Yeah, one hundred percent, But I'm not to say that
they scored once, so was up pretty well. Really, what
did you.

Speaker 1 (02:13):
Say to the boys at halftime?

Speaker 2 (02:17):
It was one of those moments, who's just more than
the same, you know, just the referee is a new
raw way that you can't We're going about three times
for tossing the nine. Yeah, there's just due the more
around the nine plus daged species now, So we talked
about we like to put a little bit of pressure

(02:38):
on the ruck. Obviously we you know, we put a
couple of plays in there and saw it go hard
on that. But we just talked about, you know, we
jo leave that mine alone and would still be still,
but just be a bit more to spill there.

Speaker 1 (02:52):
Don't touch on the number nine. I love it a
for playing from playing on Saturday afternoon to a game
Wednesday night. So talk us to what you've done this
week since Saturday, because storm week first up for you.
It's a bit of a tough start to the season.
Have you had the boys on the training field or
gym work or just watching the video.

Speaker 2 (03:11):
It's all familiar to mate. So last year, last two
years we've had storm week. Last yeah, and last year
that we had storm week and then we had the
quarter final. Whether it's you get through storm week's a
week that sort of boacher. So that's sort of assuma.
So we're we're in the Sunday and then the final

(03:31):
weeks as well. So and at first has probably been
a thing, I mean we're having it last last few years,
but didn't have anyway, you know, by the end of
the season. So having at first, we're complaining about that
generally the bodies have got fresher and yeah when we
yeah we got to the arts on Monday, but pretty
light and obviously that the coming out of us game

(03:55):
James of Sunday will be the battery again. You know,
it's just about just taking what he's in the minds
as fresh as you're killing him and the three days
you got with them, so he was really like run
on the grass Monday and then keptain shun us today.

Speaker 1 (04:09):
Did the boys come through? Most of the team come
through unscathed. I noticed that Caleb Trusk, who was in
the number ten Jers and played very well last week,
he's not in the twenty three to night.

Speaker 2 (04:19):
Is he okay you'll get them back? Yeah? Yeah, he
he's obviously had a year out of the game with
it and really had it off Pubers they call it
so of going to train. So we're just going back
to her mate. He came back up after four days,
so we we'll give him this Wednesday off and successful

(04:42):
coming back at the seventeen and then you know, we
wasn't about to trust you on this one.

Speaker 1 (04:49):
It's good to hear last year when you played Counties
menche you went down to them. I hate to rub
this in thirty two nineteen, I think it was. So
what will the boys from the Bay need to do
tonight to make sure that get two wins at the
start of the season.

Speaker 2 (05:04):
Yeah know, they're well, I don't think Bay team for us.
They we've struggled in the last couple of years. So
we we've sort of highlighted that last year. No, we're
not making excuse as pretty. We travel up and down again,
it was wasn't the ideal preparation, and I think we
were down about twenty eight or twenty five. Normal fucking

(05:28):
moments gained us and so no lots we.

Speaker 1 (05:34):
Yeah, we we.

Speaker 2 (05:35):
I think if we can just come under the game,
how we can how we did last Sturday at the
right attitude and now get a defense ride and limit
limit in on the scoreboard, we'll beg ourselves to stow
some points ourselves.

Speaker 1 (05:50):
You know, it's interesting looking at your squad. You seem
to have a bit of depth and it's an impressive squad.
Twenty eight out of the thirty two contracted players this
year have come through the Bait Academy, Age group, rep
teams or club level in the Bay. So how much
work has been done to make sure there's a lot
of local talent coming through in the Bay region.

Speaker 2 (06:10):
Oh yeah, that's that's a great stat there and we yeah,
a lot of budgets prinking and that you've got to
develop your own. So James Portage does a great job
for us the academy or athletic development program. He's out
there in the schools, you know boys and torrible boys,
and you know we've in location stuff and around the region.

(06:33):
We go around all these clubs and the throughout the
cub season. And he's also ourselves Awa Ceetals cubs and
we've been down and Carlo even and then so we
you know, we weave making conscious of it to shine
with their clubs and their club coaches and and develop
our own mate. And it's a great stat that having. Uh,

(06:55):
I think we've debuted six boys on Saturday out of
the club system.

Speaker 1 (06:59):
Yeah, nest press and you impressed with how they how
they debuted, Yeah.

Speaker 2 (07:04):
We see that. We were it was a bit that's
the word. Oh, it was that first round last year.
He's aw we we brew that big lead yeah later
in the game around one last year. So we kept
the main career out there for quite long, even though
we saw mate, well they boys have got good condition.

(07:25):
So we were a bit new getting the young fellas
out too early, but we got them out there made
they had a taste, so you know, hopefully they'll get
it walked time tonight.

Speaker 1 (07:36):
Fire up the boys tonight, mate, name remind them that
it was. It'll be twenty years ago tomorrow. They have
plenty lifted the ran fairly shield off Auckland for the
very first time.

Speaker 2 (07:47):
We were very conscious for that. We had our launch,
we had we had brin Connor and to spit there
and then the launch our tod for Great Yarns about
that year and a lot of those boys were as well,
so it was awesome connecting with those guys. So we're
very weary of the Yeah.

Speaker 1 (08:06):
Fantastic all right, weddye, well, good luck go to the
bay tonight against Counties. Fantastic Thanks for.

Speaker 2 (08:11):
Joining us, mate, sheers. Very awesome, Richard, what joining us.

Speaker 1 (08:15):
Here on the show. Out of the bad petty Steamers
their coach, good old Waddy, great guy, and we'll have
a live commentary of that match five past seven kickoff
tonight out of Rodero International Stadium right here on gold
