Speaker 1 (00:00):
Sport, the latest from the Land and just great rock.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
It's the Country Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly on Gold Sport,
your home of live commentary on the show. Now it
is time to talk triathlon. The season is upon us.
We've got so many big events that are coming up
over the next few months and actual fact, this weekend
kicking off with the famous tin Man event at Mount
Monganui and all the best in New Zealand and some
(00:25):
from around the world are going to be lining up,
including James Corbett out of Auckland, who was home after
a pretty successful season overseas. James, good morning, Thank you,
Thank you.
Speaker 1 (00:35):
That was very exciting.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
Thank you. You actually had your very first win on
the Asian Triathlon Cup Championship.
Speaker 1 (00:45):
Yeah, so my first delete win in Tokyo, which was
super special and yeah, day that I'm not going to
forget anytime soon and really kickstarted this slight new level
I think I've reached recently. Just I think I just
needed some of that like belief in myself that I
was able to do something like that, and and yeah,
(01:08):
since since that race, I think I've found that belief
and it's starting to go the right direction.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
So James, how long have you been involved with triathlon?
Speaker 1 (01:19):
It's suck like an eternity now, I would say maybe
since I was yeah, maybe ten years yeah, wow, fifteen
or fourteen. Yeah, So it's definitely been a long time,
and which I think makes it so much sweeter when
you know, when things start to click and stuff, because
you know, Little James would be so proud of where
(01:41):
you know, Big James is now.
Speaker 2 (01:42):
So are you now about fully professional triathlete? I know
you've got a world ranking of about one hundred and
twenty five.
Speaker 1 (01:50):
Yeah. Yeah, so it's a bit harder than that because
I think I mean, yes, i'd say, like this is
all I'm doing at the moment and and stuff, But
obviously I've got luckily, I'm not very fortunate to have
like very supportive parents and family and friends that helped
me to be able to do it. Otherwise, Yeah, it
(02:12):
would be a pretty hard sport to train and stuff
without their support. So yeah, we see it's a half
half professional.
Speaker 2 (02:21):
We see the likes of Hayden Wild He's next level, really,
isn't he.
Speaker 1 (02:25):
Oh yeah, he's making fortunes at the moment. I think, Yeah,
is that your goal? Yes? Yeah, Big time goal. I
would love. I mean, if I could, I would follow
everything Hayden's done. I think he's, you know, done an
amazing job for the sport and he's done an amazing
job for himself. So yeah, he's a huge role model
and i'd Yeah.
Speaker 2 (02:45):
So this weekend you're lining up in the tin Man
out of Parlor Bay in Mount Monganui. So how are
you approaching that of him? What's your goal there?
Speaker 1 (02:55):
Yeah, So it's a bit of a weird one because
it's it's kind of like it, you know, it's the
end of the season for everyone. It's been quite a
long season. So I've just got back from Worlds, so
I've got a little bit sick, so I just kind
of decided to take my time, and I'm kind of
taking it more as like a like a little hit
(03:16):
out with you know, because Hayden will be there, Taylor
will be there, you know, Lucky like there's all the
Kii boys pretty much will be there, and I think
we're all in a similar position of the year where
we're all a bit tired and just want to have
a bit of fun almost. But obviously the ego will
probably come out on game day and I'll be trying
to rip it. So yeah, I love the approach.
Speaker 2 (03:39):
What's your specialty? I mean, how do you go in
the swim?
Speaker 1 (03:43):
I would say at the moment, my swim is pretty
it's pretty good. I would be expected like I would
be hoping to come out of the water at the front.
If not, you know, off the front, and then just
holding yeah, just holding on for the rest of the race.
I think I've got a nice run, and so yeah,
(04:03):
saving some biscuits on the bike to make sure I
can execute a good run would be pretty good.
Speaker 2 (04:09):
And of course the man you'll be watching, either in
front of you or behind you would be Hayden Wild,
wouldn't it.
Speaker 1 (04:15):
Yeah, well, hopefully I can keep him behind me, but
I very much think he's going to come flying past
me at some stage, and yeah, and I'll just be, yeah,
watching him from behind.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
And of course the the other big news out of
World Triathlon is the Cup season openers returning to Napier
the World Triathlon Cup in Debry. Are you involved with
that one?
Speaker 1 (04:39):
Yeah, I'll hopefully be lining up for that one. We'll
find out later closer to the time whether or not
I'll make the start list or not. But it's whether
or not I do or don't. It's a pretty surreal
thing to have a World Cup back in New Zealand,
and yeah, hopefully everyone comes down and watches it, because
that will be the very best athletes in the world,
(05:01):
you know, hitting that.
Speaker 2 (05:03):
Yeah, and James, you'll go for next year? I mean,
what's on the program for you next year apart from that?
Speaker 1 (05:09):
Yeah, So next year is my last year under twenty three,
so I would like to definitely targeting Worlds and which
is in Australia, so it will be the closest thing
to a home Worlds different for us for a long time.
So yeah, I think I'll just be hoping to put
together a really good performance there and then build upon
(05:30):
the confidence and stuff I've gained this year with some
with the more solid results across.
Speaker 2 (05:36):
Yeah. Yeah, we wish you, James, You wish you the
very very best of luck for ten men this weekend
and going into next year as well. Well done and
thanks for joining.
Speaker 1 (05:45):
Us, Thank you, thank you for having giving me the
opportunity to join you.
Speaker 2 (05:49):
Oh absolute pleasure. James Corbett, young up and coming New
Zealand triathlete and all the athletes in New Zealand, descending
on beautiful Pilot Bayo Mount mong Anui. On on the
weekends that today is the is the race briefing and registration.
The race itself gets underway from the early hours around
seven point thirty on Sunday morning.
