Speaker 1 (00:01):
This is CEOs you should know.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
Hi, everybody, this is Jeff Thomas. I'm executive vice president
at iHeartMedia. You're in Los Angeles and I am pleased
to welcome for mission Craft Cocktails. The co founders co CEOs.
I'm at Singh and Marson Mollisco. Welcome to CEOs you
should know.
Speaker 1 (00:21):
Thank you so much for having us here. Jeff, thanks
for having us. Super excited.
Speaker 2 (00:25):
Yeah, I'm excited too. This is a fun interview because
it's about cocktails, So I guess we'll kick it off
with a fun question. Favorite cocktail for.
Speaker 1 (00:34):
Me, it's a tough one.
Speaker 3 (00:35):
I would say Jalapagno pineapple margarita and the espresso martini.
Typically the spicy margin is in the pool hot season
and express martiniz towards a nightcap.
Speaker 1 (00:44):
I would change it up slightly. My favorite cocktail is
a Manhattan. I love a good Manhattan and on occasion.
Hey it's occasion based, so I love margarita's as well.
So I'm gonna head you my bets with both of those.
And we want to just clarify mission craft cocktail that
we're mentioning.
Speaker 2 (01:01):
Yes, absolutely so. My favorite mission Craft cocktail is Old fashion,
just so you guys know that. And what is your
favorite place to enjoy a cocktail? Your perfect venue for
sitting and having a cocktail.
Speaker 1 (01:13):
Mine is, I'd say quite easily at my house with
my best friend, my wife and his wife. Doesn't get
any better than truthfully taking a minute, appreciating each other,
appreciate a great drink in some quiet and conversation.
Speaker 2 (01:28):
And you, guys, when you say best friends, you would
be referring to each other.
Speaker 3 (01:31):
Right, we are referring to each other. Yes, we met
at a local charity van food drive. We instantly clicked
based on morals, values, characters and super humble upbringings.
Speaker 2 (01:41):
So you alluded to the fact that you met at
a charity event. How did you land on craft cocktails
and put that whole idea to make it reality?
Speaker 3 (01:51):
Yeah, so we realized we love to block away from
each other those dog walks, as we both have dogs,
tournament dogwalks with cocktails. But everything we did was revolving
around a cocktail, and we love speakeasys and bars, and
then of course COVID happened. We had to make our
own drinks and we looked at each other one drunk
night at one in the morning. We like to say
fifty percent bravado, fifty percent we were a naive, and
(02:14):
fifty percent really drunk and says, why don't we get
into the cocktail business?
Speaker 1 (02:18):
We could do better cocktail. Yeah, And we woke up
the next morning, shook off that hangover and said, you
know what, we really can do this. The bigger question
was why do we want to do it? And you know,
since our friendship was really founded in philanthropy and food banks,
and COVID was happening and food inflation was through the
roof and it continues to be today, we said, why
don't we design a company that combines our passion for
(02:41):
cocktails and our purpose for giving back. And that's why
we called our company Mission Craft Cocktails. The mission is
we give five percent back of all of our revenues
to local food bank. So we really anchored ourselves in
our passion and purpose and that's what kept us going
for the last four and a half years.
Speaker 2 (02:55):
Five percents a lot. It's it's pretty common for companies
to give back even two percent, but five percent you
really are committed to the.
Speaker 3 (03:03):
Cause, absolutely, and it's not fake profits, right, because there's
so many businesses that scream out a big number of profits,
but they may never be profitable. So we do give
five percent of total sales since day one, and that's
probably been the best checked. I mean, I'm right every
quarter and today we funded over six hundred thousand meals
and donate over two hundred thousand dollars to food banks.
Speaker 1 (03:24):
As you mentioned, Jeff, five percent is a lot, and
we're not from the space. We had no clue. We thought,
like everyone else, there's so much profit margins in the
Spirit's business, and we came to find out that it's
actually one of the skinniest margin businesses. So the five percent,
we understand why no one else does it. But when
it's part of your business, DNA, it's a non negotiable
for us. Like that is, it is what it is,
(03:44):
and it's made us. Our ignorance in the business made us,
you know, what we are today.
Speaker 2 (03:51):
You talked about the humble upbringing that you didn't come with,
you know, into this business with a silver spoon in
your mouth. This is something you both work and we're
part of. We were talking earlier Chicago, Toronto, Middle of
the Continent. Tell me about that and how that led
you to where you are now.
Speaker 1 (04:10):
Humble beginnings in terms of Hey, both of us grew
up very humbly, right. I grew up in the inner
cities of Toronto, and we grew up humbly. You know
what it was week to week, paycheck to paycheck for
my parents. I grew up with a very healthy appreciation
of what hard work does and what it meant to
our family.
Speaker 3 (04:27):
Yeah, and very similar to me, single mom raising two boys,
working three jobs just to provide for us. And now I,
after having two kids and being in the position that
I'm at, I'm just blown away how she was able
to do it. But yeah, same thing. Grew up in
proper Chicago and you know, not very good parts of Chicago,
A single mom that just did whatever it takes to
make sure we have food and a proper roof over one.
Speaker 2 (04:48):
Which is why the mission is so important to both
of you. Helping other people and so be able to
achieve that dream and that goal like you have with
your company.
Speaker 1 (04:56):
That first check that we wrote was the best feeling
we've ever had in the business, and we've now topped
it with one hundred and fifty thousand dollars check with
Feeding America, a couple weeks ago.
Speaker 2 (05:07):
Wow, that's amazing. Congratulations and thank you just on behalf
of anybody listening who's been helped by one of those organizations,
because that's terrific that you guys are giving back so
much really means a lot. So how did you go
about finding the right mixologist or craft cocktail maker, whatever
it's called in the business, and how did you move
that forward?
Speaker 3 (05:27):
Yeah, so we were with a couple award winning mixologists,
but everything we've built was around our palates, so it
had to be something that we enjoying, love that will
be drinking at, but also something we're proud to servative
family and friends. So creating a drink in your one
cocktail from a shaker is the easy part. When you
then commercialize it where it gets a little bit more difficult.
So it took us two and a half years of
(05:48):
research and development because we do use real juices, we
use real ingredients, we use real lime. We make our
own handmade starts locally, right all within eighty miles of
where we bottle in Ventura, California. And then one thing
to add on our give back is every time someone
purchase a bottle at any of the stores, it funds
a meal, so it makes it really easy for people
to contribute. And it's not just a homeless like Feeding
(06:10):
America has done so much more incredible things than just feeding.
And it's individuals with two families right having both incomes
that are still struggling to get by.
Speaker 2 (06:19):
So here's what I would say, Thank you so much
for what you're doing for everyone in the community, and
really like that give back is so important. If people
want to find out more about Mission Craft Cocktails, where
to buy them, learn about the product and the company,
where should they go?
Speaker 3 (06:33):
Absolutely so they can follow us at Mission Cocktails on
Instagram or TikTok and you can go to Whole Foods, Gelson's,
Bristol Farms, Pavilions, Total Wine, Bevmo, north Gate, Cardenas, or
if you just go on our website there's a store locator.
Put in your address and we'll find the closest one
to you Missioncocktails dot Com.
Speaker 2 (06:51):
And the other thing I would say to everybody listening
out there is give them a try and if you
see Ahmet or Marson out, buy them for all they're
doing to help the community. So thanks again Marson and
Ahmet from Mission craft cocktails, making amazing cocktails, giving back
to the community, and our guest today on CEOs You
