(00:00):
This is Gary and Shannon and you'relistening to KFI AM six forty, the
Gary and Shannon Show on demand onthe iHeartRadio app. It's just fascinating to
me the amount of garbage that ison television in the daytime, from the
everyone dressing costume game shows, yesto the yappy yappy yap yap yaps to
(00:27):
the more yap yap yep yep yepyeps. And I understand it's really rich
coming from me, since all wedo is yap yap yap here, but
but there just seems to be alot of it. And then the badly
acted soap operas. I mean thereis legitimately. I know that a lot
of people make fun of daytime television, and I just want to feed everybody.
I mean, they're all beautiful, but I want to feed each and
(00:50):
every one of them. I wantto have like some sort of charity food
drive for the beautiful television people.Kelly Rippa in the front of the line,
well, she and her husband areboth very small people. They are
very small, and I want toknow what you're speaking quietly the little people.
(01:11):
Don't want to make them angry, but what do they do? I
wonder. I sit here, Isee them and they're they're both sized double
zero and I can see his absthrough his thicks. Okay, when they
go home, do they just startworking out until they it's time to go
to sleep, well, and theyjust drink water. It's like they both
(01:34):
have a pretty good, high payingnetwork job syndicated. Yeah, so they
can have somebody create every single specificmeal for I don't think that meals are
a thing there. They don't needit at all. I don't think so,
Gary and Shannon. It's Laura fromFullerton. I love you guys.
You are so good together. Youmake me laugh and at the same time
(01:56):
you educate me. But the reasonI'm calling is first a plug for Bravery
Brewing. It is so fun outthere. I've gone to two of your
news and Bruce and I had agreat time. But I'm in Fullerton and
it's far wah wah. I'm justhoping that you guys will consider a location
in Orange County and not necessarily atthe beach. Have you ever loved you
guys? I'll probably wish I wasthere. Have you ever gone to Orange
(02:17):
County? Yeah? That we have. We should get back there. We
should get back to Orange County. It's been a while. I agree.
Oh man, I went to thatBravery Brewing last year and it was so
good. I'd like an Allegiance ora Buster Browns. I'm so sad I'm
gonna missage this year, but whydefinitely if you go up there, get
(02:37):
that pizza. It's chine so good, unbelievable. I don't like the nose.
Are we throwing a birthday party andno one's going to show up?
Where do we live? Tomorrow? At Bravery Brewing in Lancaster from nine until
one, doing the show for ournews and bruises and stuff to give away
special guests. All of that stuffis going to be comed down in Spanish
(02:59):
tea commite. That's how the homiessay it, Comma te coma te there's
an l in there. Te hey. So here's a thing. Does everyone
remember the story about Gary's eight yearold birthday party? Well, there was
(03:20):
a party plan, just like there'sa news and bruised plan for tomorrow.
But there was a great was ityour ninth birthday? It was eighty two,
so then it would have been myninth, your ninth birthday? Okay,
So the Great Flood of eighty twohappened in northern California, and I
just remember it was dire. Youcouldn't get to the market. All the
roads were flooded, and Gary's nineyear old birthday party got reined out.
(03:45):
Now what's it like to get abirthday party when you're nine? It's probably
the best age. It's probably themost excited that you ever get. I
think it leads up to nine andthen it kind of dissipates after nine.
Nine is really the year to havea birthday party. And what happened.
There was no birthday party. Nobodycame. Nobody showed up, literally squeegeeing
mud out of my dining room. And you could barely even see the squeegee
(04:10):
through the tears because you were allalone. I didn't evokee my eyes.
Are you kidding? You are allalone? And I don't want that to
happen again. Tomorrow. To getyour ass to the news and Bruce okay,
and people named Dennis are not allowed? What else is going on?
Time four? What's happening? Chinahas launched two days of large scale military
(04:39):
drills surrounding Taiwan. It is callingthis punishment for so called separatist acts days
after Taiwan swore in a new democraticallyelected leader who called on Beijing to cease
its intimidation tactics. Yeah, thenew president in Taiwan had suggested that he's
not going to do anything to provokeany problems, but he's also not going
(05:00):
to capitulate to the Chinese government. We're gonna have a lot of hurricanes this
season. It kicks off June first, last for six months, and they
say it will be above normal fourto seven our forecast to become major hurricanes.
That is category three to five withmaximum sustained wins of at least one
hundred and eleven miles prowur. Itseems like a very strong hurricane. As
(05:23):
a matter of fact, a newcolon cancer blood test could be a step
closer to f the FDA approval inthe United States. This would screen for
colo rectal cancers. Most people havecolonoscopies, of course, which can can
Sorry, this write up is alittle bit under states one of the obvious.
(05:45):
It says, colonoscopies, which canfeel invasive. Well, you don't
really feel them, do you?No? I don't think so. You're
usually not supposed to knocked out.But yeah, yeah, they get up
in there. Still feel invasive.Get up in there. That's the definition
of invasion. If you have adog and you have a lot of money,
(06:06):
you two could fly bark Air.This is an airline catered to dogs.
It'll cost you six thousand for adomestic flight, eight thousand for an
international flight for one dog and onehuman. It'll transport dogs of all sizes
and their owners from New York toLos Angeles. I it's everything is catered
(06:27):
to dogs, so you have alow stress trip. Your dog doesn't need
to be in a crate. Itcan sit right next to you. But
doesn't that mean that like what ifyour dog doesn't get along with the other
you know, dogs, that's anissue. You got to socialize your dog.
I learned that with our previous canine, who was a singleton. In
his litter, he was the onlydog and it showed. And when we
(06:49):
picked him up from the breeder,it was a he did not like he
was not okay with other dogs.Yeah, because he didn't believe that we're
the same thing, right, Well, Fergus was really special in that way,
Like I don't think he knew thathe was a dog, right yeah
right, So I mean, buthow would he know that? Well,
(07:14):
we told him that all the time. Yeah, but he like be're a
good dog. Good, that's agood dog. And I don't know if
he even bothered to listen when wewould talk to him. I'm pretty sure
that he thought that you had youwere mistaken. You probably felt like,
oh, bless your heart. Thatguy comes back all the time. He's
(07:35):
a good guy. He's a goodguy. He's a good guy. He's
a good guy. He was agood boy. All right, coming up
next, you want to talk aboutfriscas, No, not frescas. What
is the word crysis? Strawberries?Who goes so com comte suboca? Just
(07:55):
relax? You know what. Idon't like it coming from you. You're
listening to Arian Shannon on demand fromKFI AM six forty. Have you ever
had strawberry salsa? I love it. I think it's Brendan go ahead and
throw his That was delicious. Yeah, that was great. That was great.
(08:16):
Oh I have some warm Okay.I never would have thought of putting
cilantro and strawberries together. Here theyare basic ingredients to the salsa, green
onions, halapenos serrano. I meanyou know cilantro and a little bit of
lime juice and a little chomp, chomp, chomp. We're talking about the
Strawberry Festival, which is coming upthis weekend. Starts tomorrow. Festival hours
(08:39):
go from one until from one pmuntil ten pm, so you can come
out out and see our news andbruce up in Lancaster, make your way
all the way back down to GardenGrove and catch it probably by the time
that ends. For that sounds likea fun day. But our celebrity grand
Marshals this year are wing Lamb,Ed Lee and Mingo Lee of course from
Wahoo's and wing Lamb is here withus to help kick off strawberry festivals.
(09:03):
I feel like everybody knows when right, like everybody and if you're in southern
California, yeah that's right. Yeah, It's like you know, old friends
come to the show day, sowe appreciate it. It's always fun to
be here, Okay, if Icome on Neo Servata Kamar our food guy
the Fork Report on Saturdays, it'salways fun to hang out with him.
You were talking about sort of howyou got involved with Strawberry Festival from you
(09:24):
know, Pandemic. We've We've talkedmany times with restaurant owners and small business
owners who pandemic comes along and puncheseverybody in the throat and we had to
kind of scramble to find new waysto do business and new new products to
pitch, and you know, tochange a way, change around sort of
the structure of what these businesses were. How did you get involved with with
(09:46):
Strawberry Festival. Well, basically,Andrew, who's the director, came to
me years ago and say, hey, we need a little bit of help,
you know, getting you know, awareness out of my what do you
mean awareness? This thing's been aroundfor sixty four years. Yeah, but
it's one of those you kind ofeven the Fair, all these events they
kind of get forgotten. You know, you need a reminder. So I
started out to day, let mehelp you with some of the media people
(10:09):
we know, and to start youknow, radio, TV and all that.
And then out of the blue, they change the theme of this year
to be, you know, likeall hometown heroes, and they thought,
well, you know you've been helpingus out. Why not have you guys
been the Grand Marshals? And I'mlike, we're helping you guys. We
don't want to you know, wedon't need to be on the front.
We just were just happying part ofthe community. And they said, no,
(10:30):
we really appreciate all that you guyshave done. So we get to
rag in the parade. That's socooling. Are you going to have a
grand Marshal outfit? Probably a giganticstrawberry Yeah. I love that they're doing
all kinds of stuff. So tomorrowat six o'clock on Main Street and Garden
Growth, they're doing the opening ceremonytwo thousand free pieces of strawberry cake.
(10:52):
Yep. Saturday is the parade startingat ten am, and then the food,
the rides, the live music.Everything continues through through Monday night.
I mean there's a tribute there's anAerosmith tribute band, a def Leopard tribute
band. I mean, this isgonna be a lot of fun. Yeah,
and pretty much everything is free exceptfor the rides and what you eat
right right, and again, allthe proceeds go to local charities. So
(11:16):
that's the most amazing part. Sowalking to the festivals free, but if
you want to participate in some ofthe rides and all that, a little
bit of money, but all thatlocal nonprofits. Are running. How versatile
is a strawberry? I mean justin terms of the way that the different
kind of things that you could preparewith it is it? Would you consider
it a pretty versatile food? Amazing? I mean, come on, it's
(11:37):
like you can have it with icecream. You can have it, you
know, on top of anything likethe French those you're getting ready to a
main ingredient in the you know, yogurt right here, sure, and the
salsa not to mention hibiscus tea.The seven Leasa is making I am super
excited about this one event on Sundayeleven am the Very Very Beautiful Baby Contest.
(11:58):
This for babies three months to twoyears old. You can sign up
online. Do people dress their babiesas strawberries? Amassing? Yes? Yes,
Yeah, it's adorable that a bunchof little babies as strawberries. Does
it get better than that? Imean it's super fun. I mean again,
super community friendly and again you know, never mind that there's less and
(12:20):
less strawberries grown around town, butthe festival, the tradition is still there.
It's time we get together. Wingis is Amy King gonna go into
the Redhead Round up contest? Youknow? I was here with her last
week. Yeah, we're going totry to get as many of you guys
to come down. Okay, that'swhat helps. You've got a redhead in
your family. Your sonho has kindof bradish hair. Strawberry it's strawberry blonde.
(12:41):
Oh my god, he's a shoein. He's a shoe in.
Great hair too, does have greathair. You can find out all the
information. Strawberry Festival dot org iswhere you're gonna find all the information,
not just the attractions and the contestsand the ceremonies, the parades, the
vendor booths, all of that stuffwhere you're going to be able to get
(13:03):
the strawberry h the strawberry salsa, and you. So this is the strawberry
mango. This is yoga. Yes? This also all right, I'm done
chewing its special because it's only availablefor a limited time. The strawberry sausa,
right, so that's a participating Wahoo'slocations. Yes, and a French
(13:24):
toast, a strawberry French toast.I'm about to get it available at my
brother's restaurant Toast and tableau. Andagain limited time offer. But it looks
like they're going to continue offering becauseit's been such a big hit. I
say, I got I got four. He can't need a fork. Well,
I just wanted to make sure yougot some of that in your in
your maw. I will all right, very swing lamb. Thank you so
(13:45):
much. It's always nice to seeyou around here. Always don't forget Strawberry
Festival. Dot org is where youfind all of the information. I just
think it adds little something when youcan hear the crunch you know of the
chip. Oh yes, absolutely,we need the more of you eating.
We'll do strength science when we comeback. You're listening to Gary and Shannon
(14:07):
on demand from KFI AM. Sixforty searchers have discovered what they believe is
the wreckage of a World War Twoace Richard Bong's plane in the South Pacific.
The Richard I. Bong Veterans HistoricalCenter in Superior, Wisconsin announced the
discovery today. Bong grew up inWisconsin, flew a Lockheed P thirty eight
(14:31):
Lightning fighter nicknamed Marge in honor ofhis girlfriend Marjorie Vattendahl. Another pilot was
flying the plane in March nineteen fortyfour over what is now known as Papa
New Guinea. When the engine failuresent it into a spin, it crashed
into the jungle. They decided tojust start searching for the wreckage this past
(14:52):
March. Well, it took himsix weeks. Yeah, it's pretty great.
Government meteorologists have you to seasonal forecastthat predicts the storms in the Atlantic
could develop at frequencies and with ferocitycomparable to some of the worst hurricane seasons
we've seen in the last nineteen YEARSAAis calling for seventeen to twenty five tropical
(15:16):
storms, eight to thirteen of thembecoming hurricanes, and four to seven of
them becoming major hurricanes. One ofthe last times it was this dire was
the hurricane season of two thousand andfive, which gave us hurricanes Katrina and
Rita. Stocks are tanking on WallStreet investors fearing the Fed won't make any
interest rate hikes in the near future. Now has been down more than six
(15:39):
hundred points at times throughout the sessiontoday. We got some cool stories here
that are they're weird, but they'rescience y. It's time for strange science.
Strange. Yes, it's like weirdscience, but strange. I was
just reading about this this new exoplanetnewly discovered. It always makes me how
(16:07):
are we still discovering planets? Imean, that's just how big the galaxy
is. Right, but newly discoveredexoplanet. They say its service temperature is
estimated to be remarkably temperate. They'recalling it one of the most intriguing options
objects in our immediate celestial neighborhood. It's Venus sized, it's rocky, it
(16:29):
transits, it has a red dwarfstar, and they think that this thing
could potentially support life because of whereit is compared to its star, because
the temperature is temperate. It's slightlysmaller than Earth, and it orbits the
(16:52):
cool red dwarf host star at justseven percent of the distance between Earth and
the Sun. Interesting would you move? Yes? It depends which average home
prices have reached over nine hundred thousanddollars years. I might as well go
to another planet on this planet. We mentioned this a little bit earlier this
(17:15):
week, but ocean water has beenpushing beneath the Doomsday Glacier into dark in
Antarctica, making it more vulnerable tomelting than previously thought. Salty, relatively
warm ocean water, I mean, compared to ice, is causing what they
say is vigorous melting underneath the ThwaitsGlacier and could mean global sea level rise
(17:40):
projections are being underestimated. They saidthat the if this doomsday glacier, as
they call it, collapses, runningeverywhere along the coast, it could cause
catastrophic sea level rise. Because theglacier itself is not like as big as
this building, or as big asBurbank, or as big as La County.
(18:03):
It's as big as the state ofFlorida. It contributes already four percent,
it says, to global sea levelrise, and holds enough ice to
raise sea levels by more than twofeet. But because it also acts as
a natural dam to the surrounding icein West Antarctica, sciences have estimated it's
(18:26):
a complete collapse would ultimately lead toabout ten foot rise in sea level around
the world. That's a problem.Ten feet. It's a bit of a
problem for us, their entire countries. That would disappear. It's time to
move to the Venus like exoplanet witha temperate temperature, but you're not going
to get there on a Boeing starLiner because Boeing has had to delay yet
(18:48):
again their launch. It looks likeJune first is when they're going to shoot
again from Cape Canaveral. NASA isgoing ahead with this very care full plan
to get star Liner back in spacebecause they said there was a series of
significant mechanical and computing problems since itsfirst test flight five years ago. Now,
(19:11):
they said this would mark the firsttime it's flown with people on board,
which listen, there are some bravepeople out there, and these these
people are among those. Sunita Williamsand Butch Wilmore are supposed to fly to
and from the International Space Station abook on the Boeing star Liner in a
journey that would last about eight daysand here's the key, and would test
(19:37):
the capsule's life support systems. Iwant those things tested before I go on
an eight day journey in a spacecapsule with life support systems that have not
been tested. We have some newson the neuralink front elon Musk's neuralink device.
(20:02):
This is a clinical trial of humans. These are the little what do
you call it implants that are putinto people who are paralyzed to enable their
brain to move things for them. That's incredible and Noland Arbaugh is one of
(20:23):
the people. In the clinical trial, he had a circle of bone removed
from his skull and hair thin sensortentacles slipped into his brain. About four
months ago. He was able tomaneuver a cursor so well he could challenge
his stepfather at Mario Kart and playan empire building video game late into the
(20:48):
night. They said as time wentby, though a few weeks past,
about eighty five percent of the littlesensorenicles slipped out of his brain. So
Neuralink had to retool this system toallow him to regain command of the cursor.
(21:11):
He needed to learn a new methodto click on something, but he
can still, you know, manipulatethe cursor. And this is a setback,
but they said, initially difficult indepressing our boss, that had been
worth it. They're moving forward inthis tech medical field and they're helping people
regain their speech cider movement, soanything to get them a step closer to
(21:33):
that. He's obviously all four.Yeah, the FDA has given Neuralink a
green light again to implant a chipinto a second person because they say they
know basically what happened with Nolan andArba, and they are working on fixes
so that some of this stuff doesn'thappen to the next patient. But there's
(21:55):
a professor of neuroscience that was tiedat Northwestern that was talking about this and
the difficulties of working with the brainand how complicated the mechanics of the connection
between a brain and a device are. And he said, you know,
the brain, it's bathed in saltwater, moves around as the head swivels
and bobs. It's equipped with immunedefenses meant to wall off invaders. Researchers
(22:18):
have observed the brain forming scar tissuearound the sensors. Speaking of brains,
we come back the up close lookat the human brain. This is a
woman's brain, by the way.Oh I see, so it's not a
real one. No, no,really, I said it just this is
a color this woman's brain. Nevermind, can't win. Gary Shannon will
(22:41):
continue with Strange Science. You're listeningto Gary and Shannon on demand from KFI
AM six forty. I now associatethis show with cold. I know,
I know you do, and Ithink mentally it's probably not strong, it's
not good for me, but Ido so. I think usually it's uh,
it's pretty cool, or it's prettylike temperate it's like that new that
(23:04):
new planet. Everything's fine. Everything. We usually wear T shirts all we
go there. Last year we didn't. Last year we wore tank tops because
it was were it was warm,it was very warm. It was nice,
warm, big beautiful sun. Tomorrow, I think the high seventy two.
I mean, yeah, it's gonnabe yeah, the perfect room tap.
(23:29):
Now is this a new shirt?Yes, the news and Bruce is
coming up tomorrow, that's what we'retalking about. I don't know how I
feel about change. I actually havea picture of it from Okay, because
I wore it last week. It'skind of you usually don't just wear new
things, you know, like allthe time. Usually it's a blue shirt.
(23:52):
Oh that's fun. What are thosebirds? They're just a plant of
some kind, some sort of florafon. Yeah. Yeah, well that's
nice. Yeah, so that's likea colored shirt. That's like a fancy
shirt. Come on, she's sopretty, she's gonna leave you probably.
Yeah, it's about time. We'rein the Strange science. Well, we're
(24:14):
gonna be at our news is We'regonna be a bravery brewing in Lancaster tomorrowday
until purpose knives. Don't wait. That is no small business. We'll be
out there. We have some incrediblestuff that we're going to be giving away.
We have contests that you can playbingo games. We have beer.
Kf I p A goes on saletoday online by the way, so if
(24:40):
you're in California, you can orderyour own kf I p A to be
sent straight to your house when yougo to Braverybrewing dot com. They have
been voted best pizza in the AntelopeValley and there's some reason for it.
Uh. So you get to goout and uh and have some of their
pizza for lunch if you like.We have a new trailer that's being released
(25:00):
for Tim Burton's Beetlejuice. Beetlejuice. This is a sequel to the classic nineteen
eighty eight film Michael Keaton Returns. It follows the Deet's family as they move
back in their Winter River home aftera death in the family, which leads
to Beetlejuice eventually getting summoned. Yourfriend Winona Ryder is there, Catherine O'Hara
(25:22):
is back, Jenny Ortega is init, William Dafoe justin throw Beatle Juice.
Beetlejuice hits theaters September sixth, Inthe midst of our discussion about neuralink
there is seeing what goes on ina brain is pretty amazing. Never before
seen details could eventually lead to betterunderstanding of how the brain actually works.
(25:48):
And Harvard University, among others, have worked on digitally mapping a woman's nerve
cells. And this is a tinylittle piece of this woman's brain. I
didn't It's not always trying to geton our nerves. That's what you people
do. They said that the waythat they've colored this, by the way,
(26:11):
indicates different sizes of the main cellbodies, which are only between fifteen
and thirty micrometers across, and lookingat every connection attached to every cell in
a very high level of detail. One of the computer computational neuroscientists at Google
in Mountain Views, Google says thebig picture goal of brain mapping efforts is
(26:41):
to understand how human brains work andwhat goes on in various kinds of brain
diseases when they afflict someone. CanI also point out that when I use
the term computational neuroscientists who works atGoogle Research and then play this, Oh
go Google, it makes me laugh. Yeah, Those two things are very
(27:07):
different, aren't they? Aren't they? Thermonuclear scientist was looking something up on
the internet. Go goog my figuressmell like strawberries. Oh, how awful
it is for you? Okay?Oh all right, smells like cinema.
(27:27):
Okay, So seriously, everybody, now is the time to start planting the
seeds. You're at work and you'rethinking, what have I done lately for
America? I'm done lately for America. I comma an American. Comma haven't
done much for America? Have youmyself? Guess what you can do tomorrow?
(27:49):
You can change all that because youas an American to kick off Memorial
Day weekend. Oh it, yesto the people who made your weekend possible,
you say, oh, I say, you're obliged, obliged. Just
a great American worsh absolutely obliged.Who wants to go to Bravery Brewing tomorrow?
(28:15):
I don't know. Do you wantliberty? Do I? Then you
will be at Bravery Brewing for ournews and bruise. You will be there
on behalf of America. So starttelling your boss that you're not feeling well
right now, better yet, bringyour boss, Bring your boss, your
(28:38):
boss, or if your boss sucks, don't bring your boss. We don't
want anyone who sucks there. Thatwould be breaking in tradition of every crowd
being a crowd of good Americans ortourists, whoever you are, You're all
welcome. We are, after allAmerica. That's what we are, like
(29:00):
