Let's say good morning now to the host of home
on KFI. It's our house whisper Dean Sharp morning.

Dean, good morning, Amy.

So as things start heating up, we got we've had
some hot weather. But even though we're having a cool
spell kind of right now, summer's just around the corner
and that means super hot temperature. So maybe it's now
time to look at your air conditioner.
Speaker 3 (00:20):
Yep, yep, it's air conditioner weekend for us here, because
we got to get out ahead of it. If there's
something wrong, if something needs to be updated, if something
needs to be taken care of, we want to do
it before the weather hits. Not just be for the
sake of your own comfort, but you know the chance
of actually getting the AC guy out to your place
when they are just swamped with calls.
Speaker 2 (00:41):
And that's going to be happening very soon. Ah.
Speaker 1 (00:44):
Okay, So let's talk about the air conditioner. You're going
to be reviewing the history of air conditioning. When did
they first start putting those in.
Speaker 3 (00:54):
The air conditioner was actually invented in nineteen oh two,
but we didn't get them in our homes until the
late forties. And the gap there is for a couple
of reasons. One is that air conditioning was not ever
invented with human comfort in mind.
Speaker 1 (01:11):
What was it invented for?
Speaker 3 (01:13):
William Carrier, a guy whose name still is on a
lot of air conditioners, invented air conditioning for factories because
you know, it was the Industrial Revolution and there were
a lot of products being created by these heavy machines
that were creating all sorts of heat and moisture building
up inside a factory. One of the things, yeah, one

of the things that a lot of people don't realize
about their air conditioner is that it is first and
foremost a dehumidifier. It pulls moisture out of the air,
and that's really what the original intent was for. Factor
Let's say you had a paper factory in nineteen oh two.
You know, it's not the best thing to be producing

paper in a factory with a lot of moist in it,
and so air conditioning was originally designed to cool that
factory down and to yank the moisture out of the air.
And it happened during a period of our time, at
least here in America, where we were had a big
fear of getting sick on indoor air.
Speaker 2 (02:16):
There was a lot of.
Speaker 3 (02:19):
Stuff going around that basically led the American public to say, listen,
just keep the windows open, get outside, don't stay inside.
Speaker 2 (02:27):
With indoor air. It's going to get you sick.
Speaker 3 (02:29):
And because of that, it wasn't until the late forties
that we actually started embracing the idea of you know,
it may not be the worst thing to cool the
air off inside our houses.
Speaker 1 (02:41):
Funny that it's the opposite. Now everybody's like, stay inside, shut.
Speaker 2 (02:44):
The windows exactly.
Speaker 3 (02:46):
And you know what here, Hollywood actually was a little
bit responsible for this, because it was movie theaters in
the thirties that started introducing air conditioning into them, and
people would go to the movies, you know, for like
half the day, right You'd see one, two, three movies
all in a row, plus some cereals and some newsreels,
and people were like, oh, for a nickel, I can

get out of this heat. And because of that, movie
studios actually started scheduling their biggest releases for the summertime.
And the war was going on at the time, and
there were these bombs that were called blockbuster bombs that
would just level a block So Hollywood actually invented the

summer blockbuster because movie theaters were the only air conditioned
place in town that you could escape the heat.
Speaker 1 (03:36):
How fun. See we learned something today. Isn't that fun?
On wake up call when we learn things? And so
Dean's going to be talking about heating and air conditioning
all week in nuts and bolts and some of the
different features and what you can do and what you
can't do and all that stuff. So that's coming up.
