Here it is a Tuesday morning, June ninth, and it
is time for a tech segment today with Mike Dubuski,
ABC Tech Reporter. Mike, thanks as always for joining us.

Good morning, good morning, good morning.

Okay, I'm okay, I'm okay. Actually I'm terrible, but I
don't share it too many people, but I'll share it
with you. All right, a couple of things that are
going on I want to share. First of all, let's
move right into what you did in checking out a
new electric vehicle right there in New York where you live.
Speaker 2 (00:43):
And it's not a car. Yeah, that's what is an EV?
What is an EV? It's not a car.
Speaker 4 (00:48):
Yeah, we think of EV's and we think of cars, right,
but it's a vehicle. So I last week went out
to Sagharbor, New York, which is out on Long Island,
kind of a beach town, and I got a chance
to look at an ARC sport. This is an electric
boat and it comes from this company called ARC, which
was founded in twenty twenty one. One of the co
founders was an engineer over at SpaceX and they've been

making boats for a few years now. This is kind
of their latest creation. It is a wake boat that
is all electric. So a wakeboat, for those who don't know,
is a boat that creates a little wave behind it
that you can surf on, or water ski or inner tube.
My job is really tough, but you know, somebody's got
to do it. And of course it's an all electric
boat as well. It's got a big battery in the

rear the stern of the boat. The motor comes from
an electric semi truck and it's good for about five
hundred horsepower. We talk about how electric cars are very
quick off the line. They accelerate very fast because the
motors produce a lot of torque instantly. It's the same
deal out on the water with the ARC sport and
the demo that I did. The ARC representative hit the
gas at one point and I almost dropped my phone
(01:50):
in the water it was so quick. It's software limited
to forty miles an hour, and in terms of range
it's a little bit different because it's not exactly mileage
out on the water. But they say it's good for
about four to six hours of mixed use, so surfing,
speeding around, just hanging out on the water good, you know,
afternoon out of the lake or in the bay or
whatever it happens to be. That's kind of what they're
targeting this thing towards. And it charges just like an

electric car charges. It has a CCS plug, which is
popular among a variety of electric cars, so you can
charge it at a public charging station, if you have
it on a trailer, you can charge it at home.
And it is a luxury good. At the end of
the day, it's two hundred and sixty eight thousand dollars.
The one run goes all the way up to three
hundred thousand dollars. Definitely on the high end of the
wake boats sort of market. But at the same time,

this company has sort of bigger designs. Right this is
where they're landing right now, but they are this summer
going to roll out some electric tug boats at the
Port of Los Angeles later this summer. They say, that's
kind of their bigger idea. They're kind of running the
Rivann or Tesla playbook, where Okay, they make luxury cars,
but they also have like electric semi trucks and electric

delivery vans, more sort of industrial apple locations where they
can really start to you know, foist some partnerships or
contracts or things like that. So that's kind of ARC's idea.
Speaker 2 (03:07):
Yeah, that sounds like a fairly big company already.
Speaker 4 (03:10):
Yeah, it has some pretty significant investment too. Marc Andreesen
is one of the big investors behind this. Like they
have a lot of sort of like Silicon Valley VC
guys behind this, and seemingly they're doing pretty well.
Speaker 3 (03:22):
Yeah. Is you know, a quarter of a million dollars
seems like a lot of money, but when you think
about a boat that has six state rooms on and
in it, you know, it's not so bad.
Speaker 4 (03:33):
Big is a lot smaller. So their first boat was
called the ARC one, and that was more like what
you're talking about, a little bit more of like a
luxury cruiser sort of thing. This is much smaller. It's
twenty three feet long, so it's more of like a
little speedboat sort of thing. Has a ton of storage
for what it's worth, you know, it has you know,
all the sort of normal amenities that a boat would have.

Even has an infotainment screen that kind of looks like
Rivian's infotainment screen with like built in navigation and you know,
music and Bluetooth that can be pumped throughout the boat
and whatnot. There's no like below deck or anything like that,
but it's spacious once you're on board. It's just not
like a yacht by any stretch of the imagination.
Speaker 3 (04:10):
Yeah, yeah, and I was joking obviously, but the forty
miles per hour that it's monitored by or reduced by software, well,
first of all, forty miles per hour is really fast
on the water begins Oh yeah, I mean you're flying
at forty miles per hour, and if it has been
reduced to forty miles per hour, did you get any
information of how fast this thing can actually comfortably go.
Speaker 4 (04:33):
Like unlimited meaning unclear at this point, like that that's
where they're sort of electronically limiting it to.
Speaker 2 (04:40):
But yeah, that's right.
Speaker 4 (04:41):
I mean, like forty miles an hours, like so fast
in a tiny little boat like that, but yeah, unclear.
I mean the thing with electric motors is that, like
they're very powerful and they have that sort of like
instant acceleration, so like they they are able to kind
of you know, basically modulate however much power that you
want to put in there, and you know, in boating

culture and marine culture, like there's a lot of modification
that goes into it, so you can probably you know,
in the back end, you know, maybe swap out the
motor for a more powerful one if you so choose.
But like, I don't know, I was, as a person
who's not like on boats super frequently, like this was
more than fast.
Speaker 2 (05:17):
Enough for me as we were just tooling around.
Speaker 3 (05:19):
Everybody who has an EV, anybody who was an EV anything,
I happen to have an EV car, and you know,
I step I step on the gas pedal actually in
this case, the electric vehicle pedal. It's yeah, it's you're
basically starting. It's zero to what what half a mile

per second?

How do they work that?
Speaker 3 (05:41):
But yes, zero whatever it is, y Yeah, zero to
sixty and under a second or whatever the hell it is.
I mean, obviously that's you know, risiculally fast, but it's man,
it flies and you get shoved back in your seat.
When you talked about this company and you were saying
how extensive it's line was between trucks and they're coming

out with a tugboat, et cetera. I have not heard
of this company before, and you would think that I
have heard about it.
Speaker 4 (06:08):
Well, yeah, I mean to be clear though, they're just
in boats. They they I was giving the example of
like Tesla makes like a semi truck, you know, in
the same way arc is making these like kind of
luxury boats. But they're also trying to get into like
more industrial applications like tugboats. They also say they have
like a party boat coming later. That's kind of their
next you know, iteration of this platform is like something

that's not as fast, it's not really meant for like
water sports or anything like that. Basically just kind of
like hanging out on a lake. So they have these
kind of big designs and again, as we said, some
some pretty big investment behind them as well.

Okay, Apple, well no, let's start with AI, the AI
improvements that we're seeing, which we are by the day.
Speaker 2 (06:48):
So what's the latest.
Speaker 4 (06:49):
Yeah, So this week is Apple's WWDC conference. This is
their annual developer conference. It's where they invite all the
people who make apps for various Apple platforms to their
headquarters at Apple Park and they show off what the
next generation of all their software is going to look like,
So the next generation Apple software, meaning for the iPhone,
the iPad, the Mac, all that stuff is you know,
(07:10):
on full display this week and kind of the big
news at least the big change that Apple led with
yesterday was Siri. So Siri is their voice assistant. It's
the thing that's baked into your phone. It's designed to
kind of be this like virtual assistant thing often is
thought of as kind of lackluster, right, kind of falls
behind in terms of capability to like a Google Assistant

or an Amazon Alexa or something like that, just you know,
has the reputation of just not having that level of capability. Well,
two years ago, Apple made some big promises with regards
to Siri. They say they were going to basically redo
it from the ground up. They were going to infuse
it with a lot of artificial intelligence that was going
to give it a whole lot more capability, And they
had this big, flashy marketing campaign with Bella Ramsey from
(07:53):
Game of Thrones. And in the two years since then,
almost none of that has made it into the real world.
A lot of those features didn't ship, there were delays,
there was a lot of internal strife at Apple, including
some corporate reorganizing, and recently the company agreed to pay
a two hundred and fifty million dollar class action settlement
in a lawsuit that had accused the company of misleading
(08:14):
consumers over its Ai products. So that brings us to
this week, where the pressure was pretty high for Apple
to do something about Siri. They are once again refreshing Siri.
They say, this comes with the help of Google, who
they're kind of borrowing some artificial intelligence technology from. Siri
now gets its own dedicated app. It has a new design.
It's going to look a little bit more like a
(08:34):
notification that pops up at the top of your screen,
and at its core it's a large language model now,
so you're going to have these sort of long form
conversations with it in the same way that you chat
back and forth with chat GPT. Now it's going to
be applied in sort of like the serie application. In
terms of what you can do with that, well, a
whole variety of things, says Apple. You can take a
picture of a poster for a concert and have the

dates for that concert be automatically added to your to
your calendar. It will even set a reminder for when
those tickets go on sale. You can be scrolling Instagram
and ask Siri what you're looking at, like where a
photo was taken. For example, there's a lot of applications
in the photos app where you can reframe things and
make it look like a photo was taken from a
(09:16):
different angle than it actually was in reality, all using
artificial intelligence and this Siri application. You can even take
a picture of the bill at a restaurant and then
Siri will split that bill between However, many people are paying,
so they're making some big promises. It's just in the
hands of developers right now, but they say this is
going to roll out more broadly and it's kind of
final form in the fall, alongside the new iPhones.
Speaker 3 (09:39):
Okay, and do you believe that everything they say is
going to come to fruition.
Speaker 4 (09:43):
I think it's a lot closer to reality than it
was two years ago. So we got to talk about
kind of apples artificial intelligence efforts in that respect, because
they have, similar to Siri, been criticized for kind of
falling behind in the AI race. Right they pull the
wraps off this artificial intelli and stuff two years ago.
Even then it was kind of late. That was two
years after the launch of chat GPT, after you know,

Google and Amazon and Samsung and others all had announced
similar sort of AI efforts. Apple largely weighted on the sidelines,
so you know, they have this kind of impetus to
bring AI to the market in some capacity. But at
the same time, AI is still a pretty imperfect technology, right.
It makes mistakes, It hallucinates all the time. You can
imagine internally at Apple that there's some concern that that

would do damage to their multi trillion dollar brand if
suddenly your iPhone was telling you incorrect information, So they
kind of slow rolled this. Now they have this partnership
with Google. Right, so Google has been in the AI
game for longer than anybody else. They have predated you know,
Open AI and chat GPT and all this stuff. They've
been working on this technology for a long long time.
They with this integration now from Apple's perspective, can kind
(10:52):
of have it both ways because they can say, hey,
we have all this AI technology available to you. You
can use it if you like, but if it goes wrong,
they can also just blame Google. Right, they can say that, like, okay,
that was lackluster on Google's part, and that kind of
is an interesting, you know, position for them to find
themselves in. Will all this make it to market? I
think so. I don't think that any of the stuff
(11:14):
that they announced yesterday was particularly mind blowing, in large
part because we've already seen it on Google phones before
and on Samsung phones, which of course we're on Google technology.
So you know, I think this is real. I think
whether it is actually a game changer, whether this will
actually get people to like, actually go out and buy
new iPhones just because of the new AI stuff, I
(11:34):
think that's a much bigger question. Mark.
Speaker 3 (11:36):
I noticed that, and I use Siri a lot, almost exclusively,
and I notice now that Siri comes back when I'll
ask a question, do you want to use chat GPT? Yeah,
it asks that question of me, which never happened before.
Now I don't get that much more from chat GPT
(11:57):
than I get from Siri.
Speaker 2 (11:59):
And so is this the start of.
Speaker 1 (12:01):
All of that?
Speaker 4 (12:03):
Well sort of. So that was actually part of the
original twenty twenty four announcement when Apple announced this sort
of integration with chat GPT. If Siri couldn't answer a question,
it would kick some of those questions that it couldn't
answer over to chat GPT to see if it could
get you an answer that way. So yeah, they have
started sort of integrating that. It's kind of unclear where
(12:24):
that partnership is going now, especially since they've you know,
announced this other partnership with open a Eyes competitor Google.
But yeah, that's part of that other piece of this.
I think that you get at an interesting point there,
which is what is actually the value added by integrating
all this artificial intelligence stuff. Apple will say it's a
lot easier now you can kind of get to what
(12:45):
you're trying to get to in a more simple and
comprehensive way. For example, one you know situation that they
demonstrated was, oh, you know, you can ask Siri to
go like surface an address that was texted to you
like months ago. Instead of having to go find that
address yourself, you can just say, hey, I know Larry
texted me is addressed. Can you just go like find
that for me? And it will go do that. Like
(13:07):
that's convenient in handy? Is that enough to like go
buy a new phone?
Speaker 3 (13:10):
Like?
Speaker 4 (13:11):
I don't know, Like I think that there's still some
skepticism around exactly the utility of all this and whether
it's actually going to bring people out to stores. That's
you know, just the state of the smartphone market right now.
Smartphones are pretty good and people hold on to them
for a while.
Speaker 3 (13:25):
Yeah, I'm sure the fact that they're now thirteen hundred
dollars apiece as artament as much to do with it. Yeah,
they've gone absolutely crazy. All right, Mike, thank you as always,

Now, I want to talk a little bit about another
aspect of AI, because how can you not do a
show these days without talking about AI or even President Trump.
Put those two together and you've got a topic that
we're jumping on very easily. And this has to do
with AI being used in medicine now. Already AI is
(14:02):
being used in medicine for sure. When you talk about
for example, you go to a WebMD, right, which is
now going to become much more sophisticated with AI, and
that you get information about whatever ailment you have. You
have the Internet being used more and more in terms
of telemedicine, and so it's sort of working us easing
(14:24):
its way into medicine in general.
Speaker 2 (14:27):
Here is where the line is being drawn.
Speaker 3 (14:30):
And this is where there are really two sides of
the coin on this, and both have a legitimate view,
and I don't know which side I'm on on this one.
And that is using AI to prescribe medication, to diagnose
you without a doctor involved at all. The AI program,
(14:54):
the algorithm itself, is doing the diagnosis and then saying,
here's the medication you need or is hear what you
should do now? They have yet to figure out how
AI does surgery. I think you need a real doctor
for that one. But at the same time, it would
take well intern this for example, it would virtually make
(15:15):
interness disappear, make them irrelevant because the interness tries to
figure out what's wrong with you and asks you various
questions and then does an examination. But what kind of
an examination? Blood stethoscope can listen to your heartbeat, to
hear how you breathe? All that can be done now
(15:38):
virtually it could all be done at distance and so
and so. Therefore the AI comes in, The program comes
in and says, here's what's wrong with you, and here's
what you should do about it. Doctors are fighting this
like crazy. Of course they're fighting it. Like crazy. I
don't know if you've ever gone to a doctor's office
and had a PA, a physician's assistant help you out.
Speaker 2 (15:58):
I did that.
Speaker 3 (15:59):
I fell down a little while ago, and I got
a nice cut, and I went to urgent carer and
I didn't see a doctor. It was a physician's assistant,
and I was personically fine with it. Do you know
when the concept the pas came out? When they became
legalized here in California, the medical profession, the doctors fought
(16:23):
it like crazy, You're not going to get good You're
not going to get a good, good treatment. You need
real doctors, you need the professional help. Well, guess what
you know. Pas do a lot. Nurse practitioners can do
a lot. You don't need a doctor to do a
lot of things. And this is the argument that's being
used with the proponents of AI medicine, way beyond just
(16:47):
researching AI medicine, and the Trump administration is going balls
to the wall on this. This is simply part of
their position on technology and they think this is the
way of the future, and it's doing something about it too,
I mean putting money into research. Grants are being given
in terms of AI and its approaches to medicine, and
(17:11):
the line is going to be drawn because where does
AI stop? And you need a doctor to get involved.
Surgery is easy, but how about diagnosing. There's a story
out of the Washington Post about this woman, Amy Gleeson,
who is now the leader of the US DOJE service.
She took it over from Elon Musk, and she is
(17:35):
tasked to bringing AI into the healthcare system by the
Trump administration. Her daughter spent about a decade battling in
autoimmune disorder, and after ten years, she uploaded sixteen years
of medical records.
Speaker 2 (17:53):
Into chat GPT.
Speaker 3 (17:55):
The machine reported that she was suffering from a different
AI ailment and it was differently diagnosed, and she got
into a clinical trial, which is happening right now. AI
did all of it and the doctors blew it. Now
do we trust AI? You know, in many cases I
(18:17):
would trust a well written algorithm over what a doctor.
I'm willing to bet by the time it's all said
and done, doctors are going to make more mistakes than
the AI programs. You know, people bitch and moan about
self driving cars. Oh my god, they're so dangerous, they're
so terrible. Well after hundreds of millions of miles that
(18:39):
have been driven and tested, and all of these various
cars weigh mo et cetera. Turns out that sitting in
one of those cars is infinitely safer than sitting in
a car that you drive. Those cars don't get drunk,
those cars don't get sleepy. Those cars pay attention every
(19:02):
moment of every second of driving. Pilots, you ask a
pilot where, for example, let's say fog comes in. And
I've talked to pilots about this before, and I said, well,
sometimes you don't know where you're at the fog comes in,
and do you just figure out you goes? Always trust
(19:24):
the instruments. Always trust the instruments. It doesn't matter what
you think you're looking at, it doesn't matter what's outside
the window. If you are confused, look down, Trust the instruments.
Trust the technology far more than what a human being
can do. And I think that's where it's going in
(19:46):
the world of AI medicine. How far it goes, I
don't know. Prescribing medication, will putting in symptoms, maybe having
a blood test, maybe having an examination on your iPad.
I have done medical exams on my iPad. We were
(20:07):
having in a situation right now, I have a protologist
that I'm working with and it's a little uncomfortable with
the iPad. We don't quite know what to do with
the iPad and the examination. So at this point I
still have to go into the office. But the bottom
line is all the kidding aside except I wasn't kidding.
(20:27):
Is that AI I think is the way of the future.
And you're going to see some real medical advances where
the diagnosis is going to be done by the algorithm.
And you bet the doctors are going to fight this
like crazy for political purposes. They're going to say, oh,
it's a question of safety, it's a question.
Speaker 2 (20:47):
No it's not. No, it's not.
Speaker 3 (20:49):
If it was a question of safety, the doctors will
be jumping up and down and saying, Okay, let's test it.
Let's do some random testing. Let's see how what the
efficacy is. No, No, it's horrible, it's terrible. It's going
to ruin your life. It's going to kill you, and
you will never get that iPad where you wanted to go.
In terms of the examination. We are done. All right,
You've got fire insurance, assuming you still have a policy
(21:12):
where fire insurance is there, and the limits are let's say,
a deductible of five percent in terms of replacing your home,
or a certain figure two hundred thousand dollars deductible one
hundred thousand dollars deductible for fire. Well, if you go
into your policy, here's what's happening more and more, and
(21:35):
this is what the insurance companies are doing, is adding
a separate deductible for wildfire. Wait a minute, does that
mean I have my deductible X dollars for fire?
Speaker 2 (21:49):
Yep?
Speaker 3 (21:50):
Does that mean for wild fires there is another and
even bigger deductible. Yeah, but wait a minute, you can't
do that. A fire's a fire, right, I mean, it
doesn't matter. You know what kind of fire burns my
house down, it's going to be covered.
Speaker 2 (22:07):
By my fire insurance.
Speaker 3 (22:10):
Well, the insurancer companies are saying, yeah, not if it's
a wildfire. If it's a wildfire, we're kicking up the deductible.
And frankly, it's what it means, of course, is your
insurance is getting much more expensive now. The insurance companies
just come back say, yeah, we have a wildfire deductible,
(22:30):
but it just helps keep our policies at a reasonable
price where people can opt in or opt out. I
think the argument is like insurance for earthquake insurance, but
it's a totally different animal. I mean, an earthquake is
an earthquake. It can't discern between different kinds of earthquakes.
It's an earthquake. With fires, they can and they do.
(22:52):
Wildfires are different than the fires that normally burn down houses,
our Senate, etc.
Speaker 2 (22:57):
Because they're wildfires. And now we've.
Speaker 3 (23:01):
Got lawsuits that are flying all over the place arguing, hey,
a fire's the fire and you're supposed to cover fires.
Now is it a wildfire because it has been determined
to be a wildfire.
Speaker 2 (23:18):
I don't even know if.
Speaker 3 (23:19):
There's an official designation for wildfire forest fires that used
to be called I don't know who makes that decision.
I mean, certainly we're told about it. The news is
saying it's a wildfire. So anyway, this lawsuit is going
to fly all over the place. So we'll see what happens.
And yep, I'm going to look at my policy. And
the problem is if you look at the minutia of
(23:40):
a policy, oh man, you know pages and you need
a magnifying glass to read them, and you should have
some legal background, because, as you know, I have vast,
vast knowledge of the law. I am one of the
most well regarded lawyers out there with a deep understanding
of the law. And even I have trouble reading insurance policies.
(24:05):
Actually I have trouble reading my address on the insurance policy.
But you know that's between you and me and the
insurance company.
