After getting back from vacation and spending the day cleaning the garage, the conversation shifted to public safety in Los Angeles. LAPD Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton explained the department’s recent success in dismantling a robbery ring responsible for more than 50 home invasions, burglaries, and store robberies across the city. JoinLAPD.com they’re hiring

He also discussed LAPD’s challenges with recruiting officers, especially competing with agencies that offer large signing bonuses. Hamilton shared practical safety tips—like choosing strategic seating in restaurants and staying aware of your surroundings to avoid becoming a target.

Finally, he warned residents about follow-home robberies, outlining what people need to watch for and how to protect themselves.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's CAMF I am sixty and you're listening to The
Conway Show on demand on the iHeartRadio app. It is
The Conway Show. We're back after a slight, little tiny vacation,
and we promise not to do that again for three weeks.
Then we're on not again for a couple weeks. But

(00:23):
I will say when I ran into Krozier, he's the
first guy I ran into today this morning here around
six thirty six forty five, and I said, how's the vacation.
I said, I work harder, much harder on vacation than
I do here, much much harder. It's much it's always
cleaning the garage, always doing stuff around the house because

(00:43):
our house is built in nineteen thirty eight, and there's
an old saying the only thing that works in an
old house is you. Yeah, And so I there's plumbing
I to take care of. There's cleaning out the garage.
There's real ranging the storage bins, getting ready for Thanksgiving,

(01:04):
putting up Thanksgiving decorations, taking him down, putting up Christmas decorations,
leaving those up for the rest of the year.

Speaker 2 (01:12):
And it's it's a lot of all day. The garage
is always. It's a never ending situation of being organized
and cleaned up because it is a staging area for
everything else you do in the house.

Speaker 1 (01:23):
Yes, that's right, Yeah, exactly, and it can never be
one hundred percent done because people are always buying new
things or getting rid of old things. Yes, but you
know what you have. I bet you have a tool
either a tool chest or a bench at home. You
have a tool bench, I have a tool chest, okay,
tool chest. And you probably have a jar of old

(01:44):
screws and bolts and nails.

Speaker 2 (01:45):
I've organized them. You have, yes, Wow, every single screw
is that right?

Speaker 3 (01:51):
Yes?

Speaker 1 (01:51):
How many different individual bins or pockets.

Speaker 2 (01:54):
Or one of those ones that has all little drawers
that's got probably fifty drawers each has stuff in it?

Speaker 1 (02:00):
Now?

Speaker 4 (02:01):
Yes?

Speaker 1 (02:01):
And is it organized by stainless steel and not stainless steel?
Outdoor use?

Speaker 4 (02:05):
Indoor use? Okay, there's the system, yeah, yeah, something like that.

Speaker 1 (02:08):
Yeah, wood concrete, yes, okay, yes, size yeah, But here's
my question for you. You know the old school guys
like have a big jar and there's seven hundred screws
or bolts or nails or thumb tacks. It's filled with
old crap and I bet you there's in the history
of the world, the history of the world, there's never
been a guy that used his last nail out of

(02:30):
that jar and then died of a heart attack.

Speaker 2 (02:32):
I got to a point where it's like, when I
was organizing him, if I had anything less than I
think five or ten of the same type.

Speaker 1 (02:39):
Gone, oh that's it, and keep five then and then
throw the rest away. Right, that's a great rule of
I had.

Speaker 2 (02:44):
I had a number, if there was like one or
two that was stragglers. But I ain't never gonna find
a situation where I'm gonna be able to use that
one or two.

Speaker 1 (02:51):
Right, she keep five and throw them away and throw
the rest of way. You know what you need the
next day.

Speaker 4 (02:55):
The sixth, Yeah, the six exactly.

Speaker 1 (02:57):
Yeah, exactly. And then the vacuuming. You know, you know
those shop vacs where they have the brush on the end.
You know, she can brush up either carpet or a dust.
And those used to be three dollars, and the brush
hairs on the end were about three inches long. Now
they're seventeen dollars and the brush hair on the end

(03:19):
is a quarter inch. That's what you get a quarter
of an inch. The one I bought eight twenty five
years ago for three dollars is a billion times better
than one you're selling for seventeen dollars.

Speaker 4 (03:30):
It is when you run across an old tool, this
is right.

Speaker 2 (03:32):
It happened to have a newer tool, right, you end
up using that older tool.

Speaker 1 (03:36):
But that's the same with everything, vacuum cleaners, tools, outdoor equipment, everything.
If it was built before nineteen seventy, it's still around
and probably works. Yes, you know they We had a
vacuum cleaner growing up. I think it was called Electra
Luxe and it was it was canister, it was metal.
It looked like the Wiener Mobile on wheels. Is it

(04:01):
blue or gray? Blue and gray and green? Yeah, yeah,
with the silver cover of the silver top. And when
you turn that thing on, you better be holding onto
furniture because you're gonna get sucked right into that too.

Speaker 4 (04:12):
Cats out of the room gone, Any pets gone.

Speaker 1 (04:15):
Yeah. The one pet that light their eyes light up
is the bird. When that thing comes on. When you
go to get clean the bird cage, the electric lucks
is on again. Christ But they don't make them like
that now. They're six hundred dollars and they don't suck
anything up, nothing, absolutely nothing. All right, Well that's the vacation.

(04:40):
But it is, uh, it is crazy that and I
think mostly guys will you know, probably hook into this
better more than women. But the garage is your place.
And when people come into your garage like your daughter
or you know, your your mom or your wife, they

(05:01):
look around like they've never seen the place before. You know,
it's a sacred place. Yeah, like, hey, where do you
keep screwdrivers? Well, the same place. They've been here for
like nineteen years, same place right here, nineteen years, right
right there, nineteen years, nineteen years right there. But they
can't find anything in the garage. And it's not like
you're hiding things. It's just that they weren't involved in
putting them away. Is jet involved in storing stuff in

(05:24):
the garage' just You, yeah, no it's. Me so see
my wife and daughter they push things right to the
edge of the garage and THEN i bring them into
the garage and they introduce them to, everybody, yes and
spread them out BECAUSE i know where everything. Goes that's.
IT i have one hundred boxes numbered and what's in
every single, box and they're all taped with numbers on

(05:45):
them one through an one through one hundred and one
of one hundred and one, boxes those black ones you
get At costco with the yellow, tops the twenty seven
gallon ones for eight ninety five or whatever they. Are,
YEAH i have one hundred and one of those and
they're all and, her my my wife's sister came over
For thanksgiving and she walked through the garage and she,

(06:07):
said all those things are, Numbered all those bins are.
Numbered what's THE F f at the. End some of
them have AN f at the. End And i'm, like, oh, well,
okay this One's, christmas this One's. Christmas this One's. Christmas
with AN f means It's. Christmas but it's. FULL i
can't put anything else and there's nothing else in going.

Speaker 4 (06:25):
On that you were gonna say fall also includes some fall.

Speaker 1 (06:27):
Stuff that's my.

Speaker 4 (06:29):
System.

Speaker 1 (06:29):
Yeah THE f is for for, full AND i can't
GO i can only pull things out of that, band
nothing can go. In so nothing's gonna go into that.

Speaker 4 (06:37):
One i'm thinking you're gonna put something, minute that's.

Speaker 1 (06:39):
It that's a that's a down, lay an uplink only
not a down link on that. One so but, people
people do judge you by your. Garage they really does
when you walk, by And i'm sure you're organized AS
i am, croge but when people walk by and they
see your, Garage i'll bet they.

Speaker 2 (06:59):
COMMENT i am very cognizant of when that garage or
openings other people seeing inside and seeing if it's nasty or.

Speaker 1 (07:06):
Not, absolutely you, know but that that's who you.

Speaker 2 (07:08):
Are that's who you, are is that, garage AND i
absolutely judge other. People that's the first THING i want
to see in a new house is the garage you. Are,
YEAH i want to see how this guy. LIVES i
want to see what's going.

Speaker 1 (07:22):
On you can tell everything that's going on inside that
house in that, garage at least every. Section everything is
on display in that. Garage and when people come buy
and they, say, hey yeah you, know hey great, garage or,
yeah you really organize, whatever those compliments stick with you
more than any compliment from any family. Member this stranger

(07:42):
compliments like a woman came by a couple weeks ago
AND i put fresh flowers outside the, house and when they,
DIE i buy new ones are only like three. Dollars who?
Cares and the one woman comes by and she GOES
i always love coming by your house to see what
fresh flowers are going to be planted. Outside and that
is a compliment from a. STRANGER i don't know this,
lady and that goes much further than all the COMPLIMENTS

(08:04):
i get from family, members because you don't know if
those are authentic or. Not and with the, stranger it
takes a lot to get a stranger to compliment. Anything you,
know they just want. To they're on a. Mission she
wants to get To starbucks where her you, know her
meds or her you, know beauty, parlor whatever she's going
and stopped and, said, HEY i really appreciate the. Flowers
and then another GUY i walked by with his dog

(08:25):
and he, said out of all the alleys that in
our part Of, bourbank yours is the. Cleanest and he has,
SAID i really appreciate that WHEN i walk my. Dog
AND i remember both those, compliments and they were probably
a year and a half, apart BUT i remember both
of them because you know that that makes the work
you do outside your house. Worthwhile when when you get

(08:46):
a compliment from a neighbor or a, stranger that's the ultimateal.
Ultimical all, right we're live ON kfi ams six. Forty
we have the pastathon coming up. Tomorrow looking, back we
will knock that out for. You i'm not sure if
you've heard about, it but we're going to be at
The White house tomorrow all day from five am until eight.
Pm so, real no real excuse to not show.

Speaker 4 (09:08):
Up didn't we just kick this thing? Off?

Speaker 1 (09:10):
Yeah we were At smart And final from five am
to eight, pm so twelve thirty fifteen? Hours god is
there fifteen? Hours whereas a material on the. Station, no
we'll find out.

Speaker 2 (09:21):
TOMORROW i guess we had such a great turnout In
Your belinda shoot like ten days, ago it should be
jammed there.

Speaker 1 (09:27):
Tomorrow, yeah The Your belindas came. Out they really showed.
Up that was really. Cool That And i'm now jealous
of That smart And final because it's a Small smart
And final. Extra it's. Bigger it was so. Nice it's,
bigger cleaner than all the other than the ones That
i've been to an eye AND i want that.

Speaker 2 (09:42):
One like you Think smart Of smart And final is
like a off, supermarket but, man that was a full on.

Speaker 4 (09:48):
Growth, Yeah smart And, final it was.

Speaker 1 (09:50):
HUGE i don't, KNOW i don't know what it was
Before it's always been a smart and final but, man it's.
Massive do you want to right off Your Belinda Boulevard?
GOTTI i think twenty one, five one, hundred Your ballona
something like. That you'll find self?

Speaker 5 (10:02):
Done you one for you're listening To Tim Conway junior
on demand FROM KFI am six. FORTY a good old
friend of mine is whether it's the chief of all
detectives AT, Lapd Chief Alan? Hamilton how You? Bob how
are you doing?

Speaker 1 (10:20):
A CAN i call you?

Speaker 3 (10:21):
Chief you can call whatever you?

Speaker 5 (10:22):
Want?

Speaker 1 (10:23):
Okay all?

Speaker 3 (10:23):
Right can you go back far?

Speaker 1 (10:25):
Enough? Yes how long have we known each? Other, Wow
i've Met i've been more than twenty five. Years twenty
year around there. Abounds, okay twenty years all? Right and
when you start WITH, lapd what year was.

Speaker 3 (10:36):
That nineteen ninety twenty?

Speaker 1 (10:38):
Six and what was your beat when you?

Speaker 3 (10:39):
Started you, KNOW i started out In hollibic over In East.

Speaker 1 (10:42):
La. Oh, really, okay that's a if somebody wants some,
action which one's the the action? Division there?

Speaker 3 (10:49):
Was, well there was action everywhere back in nineteen ninety
kind of WHEN i. Started no shortage of action in
the city Of La. Yeah, fortunately now you know we're
going in the right. Direction but certainly back then there
was action all over the.

Speaker 1 (11:01):
City what is the what is the reason for all
the action IN. La let me take a. Guess there
are a lot of people that come out TO la
to make it in show, business and ninety eight percent.
Don't and they don't want to go home because they
don't want to seem like losers going home and working
at a grocery. Store so they stay out. Here they're,
broke and then they get desperate and they do stupid.

Speaker 3 (11:25):
Things, well the stupid things. Part you, KNOW i did
Work Hollywood division for a pretty good part of my,
life and definitely some stupid things going on, there you. Know,
UNFORTUNATELY i think there are a lot of dreams that
end up crashing on the pavement here IN la and
then people kind of you, know go on with their,
life sometimes, successfully sometimes not so.

Speaker 1 (11:48):
Much, yeah it's a big, city, though IT'S i, mean
it goes From chatsworth all the way to Sam. PEDRO
i mean THAT'S i don't know if there's a city
in The United states that, has you, know that kind of.
Communit if you you could literally be with lapd and
In North chatsworth and also In South San.

Speaker 3 (12:05):
Pedro, YEAH i mean it's it's a it's a big,
city and like all big, cities there's eight million stories
in a naked. City certainly that The Naked park kind
of comes in With. Hollywood but, YEAH i mean it
is a very large you, know geographically four undred and
sixty three square, miles very.

Speaker 1 (12:21):
Big it is very. Big there's been some problems in
the valley with home invasion and some stores getting. Robbed
and every TIME i turn THE tv, on you're literally
ON tv more than my dad.

Speaker 3 (12:34):
Was, yeah and which is way too. Much all these.

Speaker 1 (12:36):
NEWSCASTS i always see, you but that means you're always,
There you're always on the. Case you, SLEEP i.

Speaker 3 (12:42):
Try not to, sleep AND i will tell you that my.
Uh you, know the men and women that work for
me over in the Detective, bureau in the department in,
general are are doing, uh they're putting so much effort
into getting especially these recidivius suspects off the. Street you,
know we did just break up a big robbery. Ring

(13:03):
they were out there victimizing people not only in The
San Fernando, valley not only in the, city but in
surrounding cities as. Well and you, know we did an.
Investigation we had them under savannahs for a little while
and we had a successful conclusion in that case where
we're looking at. Clearing, uh probably upwards of fifty. Robberies
oh that's a lot from throughout the. Region they were

(13:23):
armed in some of these. Instances they did both robberies and.
Burglaries and we're we're very concerned because you, know any
one of these incidents can turn.

Speaker 1 (13:32):
Very, tragic, right it can get violent real. Quickly they
can get violent very.

Speaker 3 (13:35):
Quickly and again we always recommend you, know when your
life is at stake and it's over, property give the property.

Speaker 1 (13:43):
Up, right there's.

Speaker 3 (13:45):
All the property is always.

Speaker 1 (13:46):
Replaceable chief of all detectives AT, Lapd Alan hamilton is with.
Us you told me this THAT i told it to
my wife and it changed her perspective and how she
leaves the. House she used to leave the house and
walk To starbucks and then walk home and the door
leave the door, unlocked which drove me, crazy even even

(14:07):
in five five. MINUTES i don't like it to be.
Unlocked but AFTER i told her that stat that you told,
me thirty eight percent of all home invasion the guy
comes or the guy or the gal comes through the
front door or an unlocked, door not unlocked.

Speaker 3 (14:20):
Window it's kind of an artifact of a bygone. Era
AND i DON'T i am not one to say that
you have to live behind locked doors with big gates
and all this other. Stuff but you have to apply common.
Sense you, know it.

Speaker 1 (14:38):
Can happen that. Quickly somebody guy can come into your.
House so two.

Speaker 3 (14:40):
Things it can happen very, quickly and it can happen, anywhere.
Right WHAT i try to tell, people whether it's the,
valley whether it's the middle you, know Mid, city whether
It's South, central whether it's The harbor where it's the West,
side you have to take appropriate. Cautions you have to
know your. SURROUNDINGS a big part of the robbery thing
is if you have an awareness and you can place

(15:02):
yourself at an advantage over the. Suspect most suspects are
not going to target.

Speaker 1 (15:06):
You oh is that.

Speaker 3 (15:07):
Right they're not going to do anything in public if
they can avoid.

Speaker 1 (15:09):
It.

Speaker 3 (15:10):
Right they're not going to do anything during the day in,
public certainly if they can avoid, it because there are
cameras everywhere and their witnesses. Everywhere, typically what's going to
happen is they're going to try to get you somewhere
where you're, isolated there are no, witnesses and there's limited.
Technology quite often they think there's limited, technology but, eventually
through our, investigations we're pretty good at identifying, people where

(15:32):
they are and what they're. Doing so a lot of
these ribary suspects think that they're going to get away
with things because it's either under the cover of darkness
or because they Are they are thinking that they're out smarting,
technology and that's.

Speaker 1 (15:45):
Not necessarily always the. Case, okay all, right when we come,
BACK i want to talk, about you, know the video.
Cameras i'm sure they've been a tremendous help to, you you,
know the men and women ON, lapd but ALSO lapd
is looking for new, officers AND i also want to
get your, STORY i, think and maybe we can come
back and talk about. This BUT i think you're the

(16:05):
first guy to grow up In South Los angeles to
become chief Of DETECTIVES. LAPD i think that's.

Speaker 3 (16:12):
TRUE i would say that is probably.

Speaker 5 (16:15):
Accurate.

Speaker 1 (16:15):
Accurate, okay all, right so this is at. Once you,
know this has never happened. BEFORE i don't think it
Has i'm sure it. Hasn't it certainly hasn't happened to. Me,
okay all, right we're live Here chief Of, Detectives Alan
hamilton as well as we'll come. Back there's some high
profile case we'll talk about as.

Speaker 5 (16:30):
Well you're listening To Tim Conway junior on demand FROM
KFI am six.

Speaker 1 (16:37):
Forty chief Of, Detectives Alan hamilton is with. Us he
grew up In South Los, angeles isn't that? Right turned
the microphon there you. Go, Yes and then he became
the chief of all. Detectives and you have you're looking
for a few new. MEN i guess women as. Well,

(16:57):
right we are absolutely and and you have you have
sort of your handicapped with trying to draw people INTO
lapd because there are some other agencies out there that
have signing bonuses that you guys can't.

Speaker 3 (17:11):
Match so we are working in this free agent, system
this pool where there are a lot of applicants that
are interested in getting involved in law. Enforcement but we're
up against all of our local. Agencies we're up against
our county, Sheriff we're up against our State California Higher,
patrol and now we're up against the federal. Government that

(17:34):
is hiring Like gangbusters for The department of All O.

Speaker 1 (17:36):
Security, right and ice officers are. Paying they're getting a
fifty thousand dollars bonus when they sign.

Speaker 3 (17:41):
Up they're getting a fifty thousand dollars. Bonus they're getting
a sixty thousand dollars incentive for student. Loans they've got a. Wow, Right,
yes they've got a bonus depending on where they're, assigned
which region they're working, in what job they're, working IT'S
i believe it's up to twenty five. Percent additional they're
bringing back formally tired, employees and they're hiring a lot

(18:03):
of people laterally from law enforcement, agencies Which i'm assuming
they are probably trying to hire some of ours away
because we have a lot of experience on our.

Speaker 1 (18:13):
Department is that a decent pool for you to go
also fishing in to try to get ice officers that
couldn't be Lapd.

Speaker 3 (18:20):
Well it's it's not ordinarily the pathway is from municipal
government over to the federal. Side, oh of, course we
have had people from other federal agencies come over To
Los Ange Police, Department department Of Fundament, Security Federal bureau Of,
Investigation bug enforcement. Administration they've they've come over because they

(18:41):
want that municipal, job and then they also want to
be localized as opposed to traveling all over the world
all the. Time so we do offer that as an
incentive if you WORK, lapd depending on your, assignment of,
course you're going to stay in the city Of Los. Angeles,
now we have people that work specialize, assignments that are
on task forces that do travel work other, places but

(19:01):
we don't have you, know the majority of our jobs
are going to be right here In Los.

Speaker 1 (19:06):
Angeles, Right, okay let's talk about the. Crime there are you,
know some high profile. Cases they're also also you, know
some cases that are not necessarily high. Profile but it
does seem like home invasion and people getting their jewelry
and cars stolen seems to be continuing to be a.

Speaker 3 (19:26):
Problem so our robbery numbers are not where we want
them to. Be we would like them to be them,
Higher we want them. Lower we want them much. Lower,
tom AND i think there are a couple of things
that we we can ask from the community that would
help us a.

Speaker 1 (19:40):
Lot, oh let me write these, down So i'm going
to keep promoting these after you're.

Speaker 3 (19:43):
Done So i'm going to talk about the number one
most important one is be aware of your. Surroundings, okay
that that is. Huge whether you're out and about in the,
city you, know enjoying one of our dining, establishments whether
you're in an entertainment, district whether you're just sight seeing In,
hollywood you could be any number of different, places you know.

Speaker 1 (20:03):
What i'm glad you brought that. Up i've learned from
friends of mine who are ON lapd and also sheriff
and a highway. Patrol but tell people how you sit
in a restaurant when you go? In how DOES? Lapd
how do you look at a? Restaurant you go in
and you, Sit SO i.

Speaker 3 (20:19):
Always look for the rear, exit AND i always sit
facing the front.

Speaker 1 (20:22):
Edge that's.

Speaker 3 (20:23):
Right IF i can't every, cop IF i can sit
and see both exits and, entrances Then i'll do. That then, you'll,
OH i see, okay, Yeah so that WAY i have
all the interests and exits. Covered AND i don't like
being visible from a window from the.

Speaker 1 (20:35):
Exterior that's exactly. Right that's exactly what my Buddy Johnny,
HANSON i went out to lunch of. THEM i don't,
know maybe a year or so or ago and we
went TO i think it was like A California chicken
cafe or something and sat way in the back of
his corner in the back and he's looking at both,
exits not even in, uniform but just wanted to be.

(20:56):
Aware but people should be aware like. That you know that.

Speaker 3 (20:59):
Awareness is important because so think about, This, Tim if
You're i'll give you the STANDARD la guy that's out
there with his gal and they're walking around and you,
know he's got the blinky, watch he's got the blingy,
clothes and he's driving the blingy. Cart, right you need
to be even more aware because now you've kind of
gone out there and you may or may not have

(21:20):
subconsciously made yourself for.

Speaker 1 (21:21):
Target so, RIGHT i, like you, know we GET i
get a lot of hate email on, this but it's pretty.
TYPICAL i suggest to everybody not to wear expensive jewelry
out IN la until this thing calms.

Speaker 3 (21:33):
Down so here's the thing about. WEARING i am not
going to advocate for wearing or not wearing expensive, items
whether it be, clothing, jewelry et.

Speaker 1 (21:42):
CETERA i AM.

Speaker 3 (21:44):
I think you should absolutely, be you, know aware of
your surrounds if you're going to wear those types of,
items especially if you've got the two hundred thousand dollars
watch that's on the sill of your two hundred and
fifty thousand dollars sports car and you're wearing your twenty
thousand dollars. Jacket So i'm not saying you're making yourself a.

(22:05):
Target i'm just saying you might want to be more
aware than the average that's right.

Speaker 1 (22:08):
Around, well you, know WHEN i go to AN atm
AND i got to make a, withdrawal even if it's
like you, know for forty or sixty, Dollars i'm looking
around on my head's on a swivel WHEN i leave
THE atm UNTIL i get to the. CAR i could
imagine wearing a watch where two hundred thousand. Dollars so
it's it really cuts your arm off of.

Speaker 3 (22:25):
That they may cut off more than your. Arm, yeah
but it's an awareness thing that's. You if you know
you're going to be out and you're going to have
those types of, items you really owe it to, yourself your,
family your, friends whoever you're out, with to just have some.
Awareness and that awareness includes the second part of this
is when you're coming and going have a. Plan having

(22:49):
a plan is kind of half the. Battle follow home.
Robbery so let's talk about, that just for a, Saying,
okay we.

Speaker 1 (22:57):
Have to take, break we'll Come we'll come back and
talk about it the follow because that happens. Too it, Does,
okay the follow let me write this town follow home
robbery and it happened to. Me AND i Think i've
told this story on the air, before but in a
really odd. Way i'll come back and talk With Alan.
Hamilton he is the chief of EVERY lapd. Detective there

(23:19):
is no detective that works FOR lapd that's higher Than Alan,
hamilton none of. Them and how many are? There how many?

Speaker 3 (23:26):
Detectives we have quite a few, ACTUALLY i mean around the,
apartment we have about twelve.

Speaker 1 (23:30):
Hundred twelve hundred.

Speaker 3 (23:31):
Detectives, yeah they're not all directly under. Me but and
you're the king of all DETECTIVE i WOULD i would
say maybe the prints on a good?

Speaker 4 (23:37):
Date?

Speaker 2 (23:37):
Okay is that what the cape's all? ABOUT i, Was
and it's, darkly just like my. Uniforms it's really. Nice
it really does. Match it's a cape for.

Speaker 5 (23:45):
Radio you're listening To Tim Conway junior on demand FROM
kfi am six.

Speaker 1 (23:53):
Forty we have the chief of all detectives here FROM,
Lapd Ellen. Hamilton always nice to see. YOU i was
going To valencia with my wife last weekend to do
Some christmas, shopping AND i THINK i was going about
sixty five and a half miles an, hour maybe sixty,
six you know WHAT i mean, roughly and my wife

(24:16):
looks over and there's a motorcycle COP lapd right on my,
DOOR i mean literally next to. Me and she, Goes,
tim she, goes you got to slow. Down there's a
cop right. There AND i, said if IT'S lapd at
night on the five going, north he's going, home.

Speaker 5 (24:35):
Just.

Speaker 1 (24:35):
Guaranteed, yeah he's not pulling anybody over on his way.

Speaker 3 (24:40):
Home the only thing that's going to get them to
pull over is an injury collision where somebody needs. Help,
right they'll stop for.

Speaker 1 (24:46):
That or you said they're either going home or to
a movie set.

Speaker 3 (24:49):
H they're going to, right and more than likely at
that time of, day that, situation you're invisible to. Them
that's where they have their you, know their goal is
to get home, safely especially give them the traffic on
these freeways and get ready for the next.

Speaker 1 (25:03):
Day all, right follow home. Robberies how do you prevent
some guy from following you home and taking all your
life Saving.

Speaker 3 (25:09):
So here's the second part of. That as part of your,
awareness you need to know the. Area not only you
know if it's around your, residence then you should know
where the police station, is where the well lit areas,
are where there are a lot of. People if you
think you're being, Followed number, one you should go to
the police, station share, station whatever law enforcement is available.

Speaker 1 (25:30):
In a, round and they won't follow you in.

Speaker 3 (25:31):
There i'm going to go with you're probably not going
to get robbed at the police. STATION i think your
chances are pretty good. There if you can get to
an area that's well lit and, populated it greatly decreases
the chances that you're going to fall victim to a. Robbery,
okay maybe a mall or anywhere there's a lot of,
people lots of. Lighting, Again i'm going to go back
to WHAT i said. Previously most of your robbery suspects

(25:55):
do not want to be. Seen they don't want to
be anywhere in near technology, cameras. Etc since theor devices
they don't, want you, know they're a license plate going
up on an automated license plate leader and now in
the city of la you're risking being tracked by a.
Drone so THAT'S. Ok, Yeah so there are a lot
of things that they do not want to be involved

(26:16):
in because that's going to increase the chances that they're
going to get. Arrested so you need to be aware
of your. Surroundings you need to have a plan for
how you're going to react with your. Surroundings and then
at the last, point if you're with family and, friends
you need to include them in the plant so that
there's an, Awareness, hey if something, happens this is what's
going to. Happen, well that's What i'm going to, do,
Right so that everyone knows what's going to happen and

(26:37):
they kind, of you, know have a have an ideal
of how you're going to get out of that. Situation
hopefully you're not going to be in the situation to begin.

Speaker 1 (26:44):
With, Right, yeah HOPEFULLY i. Was this happened about fifteen years.
AGO i was with my. Dayad it was his. Birthday
we're having dinner At Santa, pietro So i've maybe been
twenty years ago up On Beverly Glenn and then he
said to. Me we drove. Separately my brother drove. SEPARATELY
i drove, separately my dad drove. Separately it's like a
Typical la. Dinner everyone has their own. Car so he,

(27:05):
said he once you come over of the house after
dinner for ice cream and. Cake AND i was going
to give my dad a. Gift AND i, said. Okay
SO i followed my dad. Home and he drove past
his house and stopped at the stop light and then turned.
Right AND i kept following, him AND i called him
on his cell phone and, said what's going? On he,
goes somebody's following me. HOME i, Go, dad you told

(27:27):
me to follow you. Home he, goes, oh, S i.
Forgot that's a true. Story.

Speaker 3 (27:34):
Familiar all.

Speaker 1 (27:35):
Right let's talk about real quickly about Concealed carrie. Permits
are they easy to? Get and are a lot of
them being applied for?

Speaker 3 (27:41):
Him so we we have seen an uptick in The
Los Ange Police department Since october seventh of last. Year
we are trying to manage the the. Workload Post october,
seventh the number of applications quickly. Increased they've now come
back down to a few hundred a. Month we are

(28:04):
putting more personnel on that, mission and we are rapidly catching.

Speaker 1 (28:08):
Up really the. Numbers how long does it take to
get a concealed permit to carry a? Gun so right now.

Speaker 3 (28:13):
In the city Of Los. Angeles at one point we
were looking at a four year Weight, wow so we've
cut that back to a little bit over a year.
Now we're hoping that soon we're going to get it
within that one year. Timeframe oh, Good so that's going
to be one year from your application when you do your,
interview you complete your, course and we sign you off
and issue you a concealed carry. Permit we've added a

(28:36):
lot of technology to the, process so that is the process.
Itself we're hoping to get to the point where we're
doing about six to eight hundred a month and the
national allow us to catch up.

Speaker 1 (28:49):
Quickly what can a chap do to have that? REVOKED
dui fellon, Name so.

Speaker 3 (28:56):
Any any violation of the law is going to be
looked at if it's something involving. VIOLENCE i think a
good example IS i had someone ask me about, applying
but they had this little issue where there was a
battery where they were involved in a road. RAGE i, said, well,
okay so let's Just i'm just going to tell you right,
now we're not going to issue an still carry permit

(29:18):
to someone that had a road rage issues IN.

Speaker 1 (29:20):
La that's just not gonna. Happen and the road rage
incident that was reported.

Speaker 3 (29:24):
Reported and there and he was, Arrested oh he was
because it was a roadside.

Speaker 5 (29:28):
Fight.

Speaker 3 (29:28):
Wow, Yeah AND i, said so we're we're not going
to be issuing you a can still carry permit because number,
one you're outside of the. Parameter so there's that, Issue
but then you, know there are obvious other. Issues it's
just someone that you want having a short fuse and
the way this individual described it to, me it's kind of.

Speaker 2 (29:45):
Fault so, really, okay maybe he doesn't get. One, yeah
SO i think that.

Speaker 3 (29:50):
Would, Uh and my understanding is he you, know, obviously
anyone's welcome to. APPLY i prefaced it with you're welcome to,
apply but being involved in that time of, activity it's. Problematic.
Right we don't want that running around in the, city.

Speaker 1 (30:03):
RIGHT a guy fighting on the freeway road, rage you
don't want him to have a. PERMIT i know you're
not supposed to do. This but was the guy's Name Mark?
Thompson his name was Not Mark. Tomson, yeah, close all?
Right how do people apply to become L a P. D,
sorry just grab a badge and get in the.

Speaker 3 (30:20):
Car it's a couple of ways you can go to
join LA. Pd you can go TO Lapd. UNRIVALED i
think there's some good information out. There you can go
TO lapd online dot. Org but here's the here's the biggest, Thing,
tim we are looking for the best of the. Best
we are only going to hire four or five out
of every. One, wow that's that's the. Truth are you
still getting felons? Applying we are so we don't stop

(30:44):
anyone from, applying but we are not hiring. FELONS i
think it's most importantly we we we have.

Speaker 1 (30:51):
Felon we tried.

Speaker 3 (30:53):
To we have looked to bring a very diverse group
of men and women to do this. Job and we
are looking all corners of these Great United states and.
Beyond it's not unusual for us to have people immigrate
to The United states and become citizens just so that
they could BECOME. Laped oh THAT i had a forty

(31:14):
two year old soccer player back WHEN i worked, withcruitment
and he came on and he's still in the.

Speaker 1 (31:18):
DEPARTMENT i bet he's a great candidate because he can
run people. Down not only was he in great, shape
but he spoke three. Languages oh that's. Fantastic so his
dream was to become an Laped off FINDING i would
love if you can come back once a month and
tell us, to you, know give us an update of
what's going on in the. City nobody has their finger
on the pulse of what's going on like.

Speaker 3 (31:35):
YOU i would love to do. That CAN i give
you a really quick shout? Out SO i know we
were talking about these follow home, robberies some of these.
BURGLARIES i CAN'T i can't let it. GO i want
to give a shout out to our folks at our
gang in Our College, division Our Robberie Homicide, division and

(32:19):

Speaker 1 (32:20):
Lot of other.

Speaker 3 (32:21):

of them and behalf of us AT lapd because you've been.
