“I negotiated directly with Mr. Mnuchin. … He was fair. He was easy to communicate with. …  Working with him, I was able to carve out and direct to these minority institutions, a sum of money that would give them the liquidity that they needed.” Rep. Maxine Waters has always been a champion of the underserved: as an assistant teacher in 1966 with the Head Start program in Watts, California; as a state legislator in the 70s and 80s, pushing for divestment in South Africa; and as a current 15-term congresswoman and chair of the powerful House Financial Services Committee, where she’s been working across the aisle to help those affected by the pandemic. Losing her own sister to COVID-19 has only made her more determined to defeat the virus.  “With no understanding of when this pandemic is going to end, we are challenged,” she tells Mike. “We are challenged to keep this economy going. We are challenged to deal with coming up with a vaccine. … We're going to do everything that we can to support our businesses and to create ways by which to keep this economy from absolutely collapsing.”
