They try and get you to fall in love with them and then give them your money or divulge details about your life that could be used to steal your identity.
As usual, people think that somehow playing Whac-a-Mole will stop this threat, but ten seconds later they'll just start another scam factory. As usual, the IT industry thinks that having validation schemes, the equivalent to putting gold star stickers on people's foreheads, will somehow solve it. The bad guys just shrug and sign up for the validation schemes and keep on scamming.
