Speaker 1 (00:00):
We're not really talking about wine today. We're going to
talk about Father's Day, but I am going to talk
about wine for a minute. It does kind of go
to show the contraction happening in the wine industry as
habits are changing.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
Yeah, and I think more people more and more. It's
kind of like a support your local farmer. In fact,
I just saw a post about how wine is cheaper
than gas now, so you know, don't drive, just go
support you know, your local wine maker. I definitely think
there is a big shift going on.
Speaker 1 (00:24):
There's a cultural shift happening right now as people begin
to understand that alcohol is just not good for you,
or in my case, I had to realize like alcohol
hates me and it just makes me feel bad all
the time. But there's another aspect of this, and that
is all of these people on GLP ones, because it
doesn't just suppress your appetite for food for many many people,
(00:46):
it suppresses your appetite for wine, for beer, for liquor,
for weed. A lot of people are saying as far
as addictions go, glp ones are are basically eliminating the desire,
and not not just for alcoholics, but just some people
who casually enjoy. They're just saying, you know what just
doesn't appeal to me right now.
Speaker 2 (01:04):
I also think though you and I, when we were
growing up, that's what we did to socialize. Yeah, we
would go to the bar, we'd go to clubs. You know,
you'd go to her friend's house. You'd have like, you know,
a hurricane party where you take a garbage can and
I don't even know what went in that. It's just different.
And now you know it's a constant. You know, when
you're going to a party and everybody's on their phone
(01:25):
steering their dopamine is getting served by that instead of
what when we were at that age. I think there's
a lot of factors going into it as well. Also,
the the ease with which it is to you know,
get weed and stuff like that, and you know, hear
magic mushrooms or whatever it is that floats your boat.
There's so many other things available to folks. I still
(01:47):
think that there is definitely an element. I'm raising one
I have assumed to be twenty one year old who
appreciates wine for much like he appreciates a really good
steak or you know, pan sered foi gras or any
of these kind.
Speaker 1 (02:03):
Of luxury I luxury items.
Speaker 2 (02:05):
He appreciates it for the intrinsic value of it and
the connection to the past, which is one of the
reasons why I still enjoy it.
Speaker 1 (02:14):
Well, we're talking today, not necessarily about wine, but not
you know, we're not eskewing wine. But I was talking
to Crystal the other day. I said, look, you know, dads,
moms are like, did you make your reservations for bruns?
Did you order the flowers? Did you what are you
getting your mom? But dads, it's like, here's some barbecue songs.
There you go. Dad. But I feel like men don't
get enough credit, especially in today's era, because men at
(02:39):
this moment in time are way more involved with their
upraising and you know, care of their children that I
don't know if they've ever been well.
Speaker 2 (02:48):
And I said it in I said in my blog,
like my dad and my husband's saying just the same
kind of approach. They're just happy, like with the homemade gifts,
the homemade cards, that's what really because they don't really
it's not about breakfast in bed or things like that.
It's not those things that the mom, who you know,
(03:08):
in traditional roles tends to be the person who's doing
all the cooking. That's why I suggested, why don't you
try to pry those tongs and the grill apron out
of you know, dad's hands and have a go at it.
In my family, I am the girl master's that's kind
of where I am.
Speaker 1 (03:23):
Checked he does turn it on for me, because now
I'm real is so old that same the switch doesn't work.
But I know how to do all of that too.
Oh I know how to do it. I just don't
want to do it. So he likes the grill for me.
Speaker 2 (03:35):
But then it's you know, it's me, It's really still
it's just an extension of the kitchen for me. But
I'm teaching my son how to grille and so because
I was like, you know, Mom's not going to be
there every time you're wanting to grill a steak. So
that's why I included how do you know what temperature
steak is cooked to? And I include it on the
blog post if if that's not something you're super familiar with,
how to use your hand to figure out the temperature
(03:57):
without actually temping it.
Speaker 1 (03:58):
I've known this, but but I didn't ever see it,
Like I didn't ever see it that clearly until now.
Speaker 2 (04:04):
And so if you I know, this is a radio
and you can't see what Mandy's actually doing, but touching
the thumb to your index finger, your middle finger, your
ring finger, your pinky, yeah, determines and then push and
then pushing.
Speaker 1 (04:14):
It really like. I don't have a lot of fat
on my hands anyway, though, that's why I use the thermometer.
Speaker 2 (04:19):
I don't because I don't like to poke a hole
in the protein because the minute you break that skin contact, yep,
that's when things are going to start seeping out of it.
Speaker 1 (04:27):
Yeah, but I don't want to overcook. And I'm telling you,
I got no meat on this and that feels like
well done right there? It doesn't yeh, No, feel it
feel mine?
Speaker 2 (04:35):
Yeah, but you need to go see it everything to
find a spot that's a little squishy.
Speaker 1 (04:39):
I've just got bony fingers, I mean never anyway.
Speaker 2 (04:43):
After the show, I'll show you where it's at.
Speaker 1 (04:45):
But I just use a thermometer, right, I used a thermal.
I was talking to a friend of mine and I
was talking about cooking a fish that I had never
cooked before, and he said, how did it come out?
Because I called him because he's a fish person as well,
And I said, how do I cook this? He goes,
I don't know, so so we kind of figured some
stuff out and I called him back to let him
know how it turned out, and he goes, how to
turn out? I said, well, I took it past about
(05:07):
one twenty five, which is where I want ed it,
so it was overcooked. Yeah, he goes, Why have I
never thought about using a food thermometer on fish? But
I use a thermometer on everything.
Speaker 2 (05:16):
I don't I just yeah, for me, it's more of
a unless it's something that I need to take to
a certain temperature. Really chicken.
Speaker 1 (05:22):
This text Mandy question for the wine yogi that she
enjoys wine. I'm curious if you enjoy distilled wine as
in Brandy. If she does and she wants to have
it shipped Osbock twenty one year is excellent. Where are
you on Brandy?
Speaker 2 (05:36):
I do enjoy Brandy, not as much as I used to,
because I do tend to right now. As my palette
is evolving, I'm much more into you.
Speaker 1 (05:47):
Know what she just said, as I'm getting older, But.
Speaker 2 (05:51):
My palette's evolving evolving. But it's also it's interesting because
we were just talking about this the other day. I
ended up working a couple of line tastings and then
I got invited just to go work a wine festival
in Manitou Springs. I was just talking about these wine makers.
I was like, you know, I just am getting to
the point now where I really want a lot of
vicidity in my wine unless ABV. In part, again, as
(06:14):
I am getting older, my body metabolizes alcohol differently. So
even with Brandy's yes, I do like certain brandis, I
am much more if I am drinking more distolate or
fortified wines, I'm much more of a Madeira girl simply
because of Again, I consume wine for a certain extent
because of that historical connection in Madeira. As we're coming
(06:37):
up to the fourth of July, Father's choice because it
was not taxed by the crown, and that is what
they toasted after they signed the Declaration of Independence, after
when Washington, Adams, and Jefferson were all sworn in as president,
that was what was used to celebrate. So if I'm
drinking something that's higher in ABV and falling into that
distillate and or fortified wine category, I'm probably leaning towards
(07:01):
a boal madeira.
Speaker 1 (07:03):
Okay, hang on, I'm looking up something right here. Let
me see here how much alcohol was consumed at George
Washington's inauguration. Sixty bottles of clarette that's Bordeau red wine,
fifty four bottles of Madeira wine, twenty two bottles of porter,
twelve bottles of beer, eight bottles of colonial whiskey, eight
bottles of hard cider, seven bowls of alcohol like punch.
(07:25):
So madeira, it's just traditional, it is. It is. You've
got a great recipe on the blog today at the
win Yogi blog, and you've got a pulled pork recipe.
Speaker 2 (07:36):
Yes. So I'm from North Carolina, and so one of
the things my dad always enjoyed. Again, he was happy
with the homemade gifts, and I even teased, you know,
if you've added some pasta and dried beans on it,
it took it to the next level for his gifts.
And now I still have to collect all of those
kind of pasta gifts that my son made. But yeah,
my dad, that's one of his favorite meals is pull
(07:58):
North Carolina pull port barbecue, and my mom and I
are frequently asked to make it wherever we're going. I'm
making it this weekend because I'm actually doing a barbecue
and wine peering class at the Wine Gallery on Sunday,
So come see me. And yeah, I love I love
pulled pork. It's such an easy recipe. It's vinegar based
instead of like a tomato based or mustard based.
Speaker 1 (08:19):
This one kind of barbecue sauce that I just do
not like. I do not like Carolina barbecue sauce. And
I've tried. I have tried this sort of hard exactly.
That's what everybody says. I tried it. I'm like, no,
I still don't like. It's just too vinegar forward for mine.
Speaker 2 (08:35):
Is not mine. I would say mine probably leans more
a little bit heavier into the brown sugar. I will
occasionally add maple if I'm not doing refined sugar, so
I can go with maple. And then I it up
with a lot of different I use lower acidity. A
lot of people will use like a white wine vinegar.
I actually like to use rice wine, which I find
(08:56):
is not nearly It's has a sweetness to it.
Speaker 1 (08:58):
Does that's different?
Speaker 2 (08:59):
Yeah, I will replace the white vinegar with rice wine.
I think they've included that in the VID. That's how
I tend to do it because my dad had acid
reflex issues, so we always kind of we went with
the apple side of vinegar with the mother and then
also it's not harsh, and then rice wine.
Speaker 1 (09:17):
All right, you also have a little bit. There are
some gift ideas on this as well for people that
are still looking for what to get for your dad.
Speaker 2 (09:26):
And now for those those seriously tried.
Speaker 1 (09:31):
Etsy has some really cool stuff. But I've tried to
on the blog the last couple of days include links
that have some really good, kind of gifty things to them.
But it's it's this is what's been driving me crazy
for years because my husband does not drink whiskey, he
does not grill, and he does not play golf. I mean,
he knows how to play golf. We just don't play
(09:51):
very often. It's literally like, if you're not a dad
who does those three things, we got nothing for you.
Super frustrating.
Speaker 2 (09:58):
Seeing my dad was the same way, not a drinker,
didn't really grill because he had me come over and
you know, and he played golf, but he wasn't like
so into golf that would have made right. So that's
why I tend to go towards more of those personalized things,
whether like one of his favorite UH gifts that we
got him for a Father's Day was I got him
(10:19):
not only a T shirt a favorite picture of he
and his grandson, but I got him a coffee mug
with that same picture so that he could sit there
and drink his coffee see your World's Greatest Papa. And
then the coffee mug matched the T shirt.
Speaker 1 (10:32):
So it was really an it was everything.
Speaker 2 (10:35):
It was, you know, multiple gifts, and you know it's
still to this day. I can look at that UH
and there's a picture of my son when he was
a baby holding on to World's Greatest Papa, and he's
kind of biting into the card. And I caught that
just you know, uh, randomly, UH as a pitcher, and
I made that into a T shirt and a coffee mug.
Speaker 1 (10:57):
There are people coming at you on the text line,
and I'm gonna read it. I'm sure as it was texted,
this is my vision of how this was texted. I
sure hope that your Carolina barbecue sauce is a mustard sauce.
Speaker 2 (11:09):
No, that's I'm not Western North Carolina. That's Western North Carolina.
I am eastern North Carolina. I'm from the Piedmont towards
the beach, so I enjoy my North Carolina barbecue sauce
with vinegar, and my husband's allergic to mustard, so me
there is no mustard.
Speaker 1 (11:25):
I take it back. What I should have said is
the only barbecue sauce I don't like is the barbecue
sauce from the state of North Carolina. Because I don't
like the mustard sauce either. I even will do that
Alabama white sauce, which is not a barbecue sauce. It's
just mayonnaise and something else. I mean, there's nothing in it's.
Speaker 2 (11:41):
More vinegar addidence.
Speaker 1 (11:42):
Yeah, and it's like I will even do that ahead
of Carolina barbecue.
Speaker 2 (11:46):
I just need to let me make it. I mean,
that's again, whateveryone wine vinegar changes the whole complex.
Speaker 1 (11:51):
That you actually have intrigued me. So you said you
were doing a wine tasting and a food tasting this weekend.
Speaker 2 (11:58):
Yeah, at the wine gallery. It's all focused on kind
of your summer wines ideally suited for pairing with a
different barbecue.
Speaker 1 (12:05):
Are we in rose season right now? We are totally It's.
Speaker 2 (12:08):
Time to rose.
Speaker 1 (12:08):
A day away guys. This is where not being able
to drink wine hurts.
Speaker 2 (12:12):
Pink wine and the sunshine. In fact, I have a
great non alcoholic rose too that I do enjoy as well.
I thought you'd bringing it out, but I know you're so.
Speaker 1 (12:22):
I can't do anything. All dads need an obnoxious Semiquincentennial shirt.
Speaker 2 (12:27):
Yes, yeah, I think that's a good one too well.
And in fact, so my husband's birthday always falls around
Father's Day and we used to go camping all the time,
which you know, that's what he likes to do. Again,
for me, it's more about like kind of focusing on
what the dad.
Speaker 1 (12:41):
Enjoys doing exactly.
Speaker 2 (12:42):
In the case of Chuck, I could totally see like
this massive like Hawaiian print shirt with like pictures of
his kids and grandkids, like their faces and all the
funny do you have that with the dog's photos.
Speaker 1 (12:53):
But the problem is being as big as he's like
it's and Chuck is all upper by right, so it's
like a shirt that's from one of those companies. It's
a little challenging.
Speaker 2 (13:03):
Well so, you know, but for like my husband, his
big thing, like the cards, I really we just ordered
him yesterday. Again. Etsy is a great place to get
in to get those personalized things. But my husband absolutely
loves the show ted Lasso. He is Roy Kent, and
so I hope he's not listening because it's going to
ruin the surprise. But his Birthday cards, his father Day carts,
(13:24):
they are all they are all Roy Kent themed because
one of the favorite gifts I've ever gotten him, And
he just comments all the time about how people when
he's on a trip and he wears it down to
the hotel restaurant, He's like, oh my god, people can't
stop talking about you know, my Roy Kent is my
spirit animal T shirt and so I got him a
new one which is identifies more as Roy and less
(13:45):
as a Ted And if you're a Ted Lasso fan,
that joke kind of lands pretty funny because Roy tends
to drop a lot of f bombs, and so yeah,
it's just one of those things knowing who you're buying
for and I think finding kind of those things that
make them feel appreciate because you're noticing that is something
that brings me joy.
Speaker 1 (14:03):
But that's that's the heart of good gift giving a period.
It really is in that, you know, if if you
give a gift that says, I see you, I know
who you are, I understand you as a person. That
in and of itself doesn't matter the cost of a
gift or anything. It just says, this gift made me
think of you because of this. And I've never gone
(14:25):
wrong and I bought some weird gifts before, I mean
really weird gifts before looking at the Wine Gallery. You've
got two and three pm.
Speaker 2 (14:36):
Yeah, so well fancy, and you know, come with an
appetite because you're going to have it's not going to
be it is going to be pulled pork, although I'm
not adding in the vinegar sauce because I'm going to
be using a sauce that we actually carry in the
store to sauce the pulled pork. But yeah, I We'll
be doing some pasta salad and I'm going to have
a white wine a rose, and I'm gonna have two
(14:56):
reds pino no ron I think a chiraz or Sarah.
Speaker 1 (15:00):
These are always fun and you can go to the
Wine Galleryco dot com Wine Galleryco dot com, or you
can just go to Crystal's blog which is linked today
on my blog blog to blog support is what we're doing.
She always has good stuff on the blog as well. Mandy,
dads love tools and pocket knives. Let me just say this,
Young dads love tools and pocket knives. Old dads already
(15:23):
have all the tools and all the pocket knives.
Speaker 2 (15:25):
And I would just say, my husband wants to pick
out that stuff. I've tried gifting him that over the years. Yeah,
and or like I get him. I would go to
the Renaissance Festival and I would go to a you know,
a blacksmith, and I would get this amazing forged you
know knife, and like it's so perfect when you're hunting.
And he's like, it's too pretty. I can't use that,
thank you, And I'm just like, what but this me
(15:45):
and me, I saw this and it was so perfect
for you. Yeah, it's too pretty. The grip's not right.
And so I just said, you know, those kinds of
for me now. And I don't want to do a
gift card. So you know, I go with things I
know he's gonna I know he's gonna wear. My husband's
a T shirt guy. And you know, after a while,
especially when I get a hold of the T shirts
that need to be retired, you thrown away, I need
(16:08):
to replace them, so I replace them with quality things.
Speaker 1 (16:10):
I love this text message. We'll finish on this note
before out of the day. My daughter gives me canned
corn beef hash. Sorry, my guilty pleasure. That is a
perfect gift, exactly perfect. He knows what your guilty pleasure is.
A very well done daughter, or she's trying to put
you in an early grave, whichever you decide. You know
more about that relationship than I do. But now it's
time for the most exciting segment on the radio.
Speaker 2 (16:33):
I'm it's kine in the world.
Speaker 1 (16:39):
That day. All right, Oh quiet, any I can't, I
gotta get my pen. It's okay. What is our dad
joke of the day, please, Anthony.
Speaker 3 (16:48):
My cat seems to like stormy weather when it rains
it perfect?
Speaker 1 (16:55):
No, no, no, no, okay, I yes, yes, yes? Is
there a word of the day please?
Speaker 3 (17:01):
It is a noun.
Speaker 1 (17:02):
Noun means like uh, an odd misstep of a silly
a quirky moment.
Speaker 3 (17:14):
There.
Speaker 1 (17:14):
Yeah, I think we're nibbling around the edges.
Speaker 3 (17:17):
Martual minor flaws or shortcomings in someone's character or behavior okay, yes,
or in fencing, and also refers to the weakest part
of the sword's blade between the middle end point.
Speaker 1 (17:29):
Yeah, okay, uh. Mandy asks the wine gouru why she
prefers prefers acidic wine. Well, let's see shine quickly.
Speaker 2 (17:38):
Ten seconds, just like the way it feels in my palate,
and it doesn't weigh me down and needs something of
light and refreshing. Acid is the key to light and refreshing.
The interest why you lemon zest mne juice to jug
up your uh like sauces?
Speaker 1 (17:52):
All right? The prehistoric period, when there was human life
before records of human activity, is broadly divided into three ages,
the Stone Age, the Bronze Age, and.
Speaker 2 (18:04):
The Iron Age.
Speaker 1 (18:05):
The Iron Age is correct, that was when we began
fortune iron. So we were moving through there very good.
Speaker 2 (18:12):
Crystal, and when the first knife that was forged him
and on Father's Day and the guy said, yeah, it's
too pretty, too pretty.
Speaker 1 (18:20):
The handle is not right, but I appreciate it. I
appreciate you anyway. All right, what is our jeopardy category?
Speaker 3 (18:25):
Well, first of all, according to the official standings for
this year, whin yild he's only on one something.
Speaker 1 (18:31):
How she's only been on.
Speaker 2 (18:33):
Yeah, And I went to Europe in April and the
top she's been gone anyway.
Speaker 1 (18:40):
Guests are four and eight against Mandy. So here we
go to the case one. I thought I went, well,
not this year, not this year. This only started January. First.
Speaker 3 (18:47):
Yes, category is saints on the map, so it's Saint something, Okay,
Probably it's where to go to groove to the Twin
Cities jazz?
Speaker 1 (19:00):
What is St? Paul? Correct? Okay?
Speaker 3 (19:02):
Napoleon lived at the Briars Pavilion and then at Longwood
on this island in the South Atlantic.
Speaker 1 (19:13):
I think I know, but I'm not super sure it.
I know. I'm not going to guess because I'm not
sure at all.
Speaker 2 (19:18):
An yogi anything going once?
Speaker 1 (19:21):
What is Saint Helena? Oh? Good? I was wrong? Good choice?
Speaker 3 (19:25):
An island country in the Lesser Antilles is a package
deal the Saint and the Grenadines. Saint Blank and the Grenadines. Ummm,
you'll know it when.
Speaker 1 (19:38):
I say it, Manny, What is Saint Martin?
Speaker 3 (19:40):
Wrong?
Speaker 1 (19:41):
Dang it? What is Saint Vincent? Oh? Primy?
Speaker 3 (19:46):
The Pony Express went from this Missouri city and Sacramento.
Speaker 2 (19:50):
Man, how's a tie?
Speaker 1 (19:50):
Tie goes to ghost? What is Saint Louis? That is? It?
Speaker 3 (19:55):
Says both says Saint Joseph or Saint Louis.
Speaker 1 (19:57):
So we're going to go, well, yeah, well we'll go. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (20:00):
A church in this suburb of Paris has the tombs
of twelve centuries of French kings.
Speaker 1 (20:09):
What's the score is one crystal zero, Mandy, I'm not
saying any kind.
Speaker 2 (20:17):
Agree.
Speaker 1 (20:18):
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (20:19):
I think it's pronounced Saint Denni or Saint Dennis.
Speaker 2 (20:21):
Denny den crystal wind.
Speaker 1 (20:24):
Dang, dang. That was a good one for you except
for me. Anyway, we're gonna get out of here. Goodness
to you, my friend,
