Speaker 1 (00:01):
All right, but it's the golf show on the ticket.
We've talked about Joe Caruso, and he'll be on two
weeks after the Masters, I believe, So I think he's
coming up in a couple next week we'll be at
the the Valero Texas Open with a lot of Valerie
Text's Open guests, and then a couple weeks after that
Joe will be back. But Joe works out at the
stam Pedro Driving Range in Part three, and I understand
(00:24):
you to have a putting course there.
Speaker 2 (00:25):
Tell me about that.
Speaker 3 (00:26):
Oh man, it's a Popstroke smaller version Junior Varsity, if
you will, of what they have out there on iten
and sixteen oh four, and if anyone's been to Popstroke,
they realize how fun that place is. We've got a
smaller version and it's a smaller price too, so I
think that corresponds with what you're getting out there. But
it's right adjacent to the building and kind of stretches
(00:48):
over near the teaching center. Ten bucks for adults, six
bucks for kids, and I think if you're six are
hundred it's free for the young kids. Eighteen holes, lots
of cool breaks both right and left, lots of hard holes,
some holes that you can make some ones on, but
also some holes that you can make some some five
six is on or may not finish if you're having
(01:09):
that hard a hard hard time on it.
Speaker 1 (01:11):
What's the feedback bend? So far from it? People enjoying it?
Speaker 2 (01:15):
Oh.
Speaker 3 (01:15):
I think they're loving it, and I think it's the
perfect place for families, spouses, kids that maybe aren't into
golf yet to really fall in love with it. We're
going to give you free putters and golf balls to
use while you're there as well.
Speaker 2 (01:29):
Can you use your own if you want?
Speaker 3 (01:30):
Well, yeah, of course, Andy, we know you're going to
go out there with your own Scotty or whatever you're using.
Speaker 1 (01:35):
Yeah. Yeah, I don't want to. I don't want to
mess up the stroke, you know, with the putt putt putter.
Speaker 2 (01:41):
I hear you.
Speaker 1 (01:42):
Yeah, But I think that's cool because dad may want
to go hit balls, or the boyfriend may want to
go hit balls with a girlfriend, and the other other
person with them is like, I don't play golf.
Speaker 2 (01:49):
What am I going to do on them out there?
Speaker 3 (01:50):
My wife and I were down there hitting some putts
two weekends ago, and there was a group of ladies
and they had two buckets of beer with them and
they were having the best time. And I thought, this
just makes my heart smile that to have this group
of ladies out here playing.
Speaker 1 (02:03):
There is and I'll go back to my Scotland stuff.
There's to kind of show you where this all can
come from and why we haven't thought about it. Because
there's a thing called the Himalayas near the Old Course,
and it's a punting course.
Speaker 2 (02:15):
Yeah, and I think it's ten pounds or something to
play it.
Speaker 1 (02:18):
I've never played it, but I've eaten lunch and watched
them do it. And then they have a day I
think it's on Tuesdays where it's a ladies club. There's
fifty sixty ladies and most of them are over fifty
years old and they're having the time of their life
out there. It's a social gathering with golf. They may
not even play regular golf, but they play the Himalayas
(02:39):
and their punting tournament every week.
Speaker 3 (02:40):
Our board chairman, Lifelong san Antonian. He always reminds me
or tells me about the days of his youth or
his past where they would gather at San Pedro and
putt and put under the lights. Then they would have
an adult beverage and just have a great time. And
so that was really kind of his impetis to get
something built like like we did, and we probably stretched
(03:02):
a little further than what he originally his original concept was,
but it's it's really fun.
Speaker 2 (03:06):
Yeah, get out there and play everyone.
Speaker 1 (03:07):
I grew up in Oklahoma working and playing at what
is still there in Lake Keffner golf course, and the
putting green was kind of the congressional place where everybody met.
That's where you started your day. If we even hit
golf balls, we always putt it before we played. Sometimes
we go hit three or fifteen twenty balls, but very rarely.
(03:29):
But there were more activity going around that putting green,
including some amazing, amazing gambling and things like that going
on as well. I saw a fourteen year old girl
take one hundred and sixty five dollars off of a
college golfer and he refused to pay her.
Speaker 3 (03:47):
We played for Gator rates when I was a kid,
but I'm sure the dads were playing for something different exactly.
That was nineteen eighty one, and I think that debt
still hasn't been paid.
Speaker 2 (03:57):
The interest on that is pretty good.
Speaker 1 (03:58):
Yeah, I would start charging you for Max Meisner is
going to be Uh. I think he's here in the
field next week for the VTO but he's in Houston
right now.
Speaker 2 (04:07):
He's good.
Speaker 1 (04:07):
He had a good start, he got four under the
first day. But good to see Max, a San Antonio,
Alamo City or Alamo High school golfer start to get
his career kicked in and playing quite well right now.
Speaker 2 (04:19):
Yeah, it's uh.
Speaker 3 (04:21):
Those kids did uh, the two brothers, the two Meisner brothers,
exceptional golfers in high school and collegiately. And and uh,
I think it's just a matter of time. Mac was
a Walker Cup player if I remember right, And I
think he's he's going to be a lifelong tour player
that has some has some decent success.
Speaker 1 (04:42):
What do you think of the TGL series this year,
the TV Indoor League for Tiger and Ry put together.
Speaker 2 (04:48):
I liked it more than I thought I would. I
did too, I didn't watch.
Speaker 3 (04:52):
I didn't watch as maybe as much as I would
like to, you know, thinking about Tuesday nights. It was
never on my radar screen, but every time I would
flip through the channels and I'd say, oh, dang, I
forgotten I would I would watch the end of it
cool format.
Speaker 2 (05:03):
I love the.
Speaker 3 (05:04):
Rotating green, I love that they were hitting on real grass.
I think I would have liked to have And maybe
towards the end of the season they're started to become
a little bit more banter amongst the players and a
little bit more ribbing and giving each other some hard times,
which I think that was the whole concept that I
was looking forward to. I'd like to see the audience
maybe get a little bit more involved. But I think
it's gonna I think it's going to continue to evolve
(05:25):
and become a special deal.
Speaker 2 (05:26):
I hope that.
Speaker 1 (05:27):
There is a way for somebody to take that concept
and to some extent with popstroke and some of the
other stuff they've done this, but I would like to
be able to see that trans into something that the
public could play, because I would like to especially if
you live in the North, but even in the South,
if it's a cold day and you want to play
golf and you can hit, you can actually play a
(05:48):
golf course and put on real grass and hit bunker
shots out of real sand and that kind of stuff.
It would be hard to market it to the masses.
Because you know, there's only one building and one goal
golf course. But if there's a way for somebody to
kind of streamline that, I think there's a concept there
that would be great for the golfer in inclement conditions.
Speaker 2 (06:08):
Yeah, I agree.
Speaker 3 (06:09):
I think that the infrastructure to build something like that
would necessitate a really high fee to play it. But
there's some smart people out there that can conceptualize and design.
Speaker 1 (06:19):
Well, all right, a few weeks ago, it's been more
than that. It's been a couple of months ago. When
we had Jacon Jake Stiman, your director of agronomy on
the golf courses, we were talking about keeping the golf
course and condition and good condition of what golfers can do.
And too often golfers don't rake the bunkers when they
finished hitting out of them. And now you've got footprints
(06:40):
and uneven sand, and every golfer when they're in the
bunker should rake the sand. And I tried a lot
of times. I'm raking where I was and where three
or four other people were. But I was watching Fluff Cowen,
the famous caddy for Tiger back when he first started,
and Jim Furick for a long time as well, and
he was taught about They were following him around a
(07:01):
day in the life of a caddy and he was
talking about raking bunkers and the proper way to do it.
And I can tell you I've never known this, and
I'm probably just as guilty as everyone else of improperly
raking the bunker. But Fluff said, never rake towards you,
always rake away from you. I thought that was something
we could all learn from because that makes the sand better.
Speaker 2 (07:23):
For the next guy that gets in it.
Speaker 3 (07:24):
Yeah, the biggest complaints that people will give about bunkers
is there's no sand or it's inconsistent sand at the
bottom of the bunker where your ball typically ends up. Well,
if you get in there and you you rake outward
or rake towards the edges, you're pulling the sand out
of the bottom or out of the middle towards towards
the edge where you're walking out. But if you actually
push it inward where maybe you're a little bit thinner
(07:45):
on the edges and got more sand or more depth
on the bottom where your ball typically ends up, is
really the goal.
Speaker 1 (07:50):
So good job, Fluff, Yeah, awesome, you got a favorite
for the vto next week.
Speaker 3 (07:56):
Well, how about we pick Ricky Fowler and gets him
into the Masters.
Speaker 2 (08:00):
That'll be nice.
Speaker 3 (08:01):
Yeah, I think Jimmy Walker got into the field, so listen.
Speaker 1 (08:03):
Thank yous in there too, let's root for Jimmy is
about four years away from the champions PGA Tour champions.
Speaker 2 (08:09):
I think that's on his radar.
Speaker 1 (08:11):
Whaterever Hedeki's playing, I'm going to be watching him probably
Thursday and Friday, and hopefully he makes the weekend. He's
had some success here before, Colin Maracao at number four
in the world. Great to have somebody with that high
of a status out here as well.
Speaker 3 (08:24):
Yeah, let's just hope for some perennial All stars on
the leaderboard over the week.
Speaker 1 (08:28):
Absolutely, Andrew, thanks as always, enjoy your day and continue
success with the trail. And by your time you're here
next month, I'm guessing we're going to have some almost
perfect condition.
Speaker 2 (08:38):
Thanks Andy, you're the best. All right.
Speaker 1 (08:39):
That's Andrew Peterson and thank you for being part of
