Speaker 1 (00:01):
Welcome back to the Ticket seven sixty Golf Show. This
is David Buniotsi in for Andy Everett, our number two
one zero seven three six nine seven sixty in studio
with us as a president and CEO of the Alamo
City Golf Trail Andrew Peterson. Andrew. Lots of things going
on with the Alamo City Golf Trail. We've covered the
regrassing at Willow Springs. Now you mentioned that the entire course,

(00:22):
not just the greens, but the entire course was all regrasped.

Speaker 2 (00:26):
We didn't get all the way into the rough, so
the rough will continue to be the common Bermuda, but
we did extend out the fairways a little bit, so
you've got to hit it pretty wayward to hit it
outside of the pass polumn once we get it open.
But yeah, like I mentioned, David, it's ahead of schedule
and we'll be open at some point in July. We'll
have a full, full complement of eight golf courses open,

(00:48):
which certainly should make it a little bit easier to
book TA times later this summer and into the fall.

Speaker 1 (00:52):
What's going on over at San Pedro right now for
people don't want to get a lot of practice in
and maybe learn the game.

Speaker 3 (00:57):
It's absolutely the busiest place in town.

Speaker 2 (01:00):
Extended out the parking lot a couple of years ago,
and I'm glad we did because it's constantly fulling. I'm
going to stop either this afternoon and say hi and
check in on the team. We have every amenity there
is when it comes to golf, club fitting, club repair,
golf instruction, short game facility.

Speaker 3 (01:17):
You can hit golf balls till the cows come home.

Speaker 2 (01:20):
We've got a lighted par three course that goes around
the perimeter of it. We've got a newly designed eighteen
hole putting course, so for those who've been out to
pop stroke out on I ten, this is a version
of that. It's a little bit smaller and it's quite
a bit less expensive. But we've got lunch and dinner,
and we've got drinks, and we've got an indoor simulator.
We've got all kinds of TVs on inside the golf

(01:42):
shop in the clubhouse, so you can watch golf tournaments,
in baseball, in football when it's that type of season,
and you can get any golf fix you need at
the San Pedro Driving Range.

Speaker 1 (01:51):
In Part three, looking at your website, here. Tell us
about wine and nine at sam Pedro.

Speaker 2 (01:56):
Well, we're always trying to do new things, So we're
trying to get some couples golf out there.

Speaker 3 (02:01):
We're trying to get more ladies. We're trying to get
more youth.

Speaker 2 (02:03):
Not that we want the youth to be out there
drinking wine, but we want to get different types of
people to be out there and enjoying that. So, yeah,
we're doing some wine nights where we're playing a part
three and in fact, we've got a whiskey tasting coming
up as well, So we're going to cater to the
people that like that spirit, and we're going to do
it with a two person scramble where you're going to

(02:25):
have different types of whiskey and bourbon sampling around the
par three course.

Speaker 1 (02:29):
And what is that going to be?

Speaker 2 (02:30):
Well, I'd be lying if I said I knew the
data off the top of my head. Thanks for asking
and putting me on the spot, But it's going to
be on our website and our social media channels and
I'll make sure it pops up there right after we
get off the air.

Speaker 1 (02:41):
Tell us about some of the leagues, some of the
junior leagues especially.

Speaker 2 (02:45):
Well, I think that youth on course program that I
mentioned is the most prevalent, but we're also involved with
PGA Junior League. That's a fantastic program, an inexpensive program
for kids to not only get in golf instruction competitive
outlet as well, they pay play against some of the
other junior leagues in towns. So, for instance, the TPC

(03:07):
San Antonio has a Junior league, Golf Club of Texas
has a PGA Junior League, so the various junior leagues
in the city will.

Speaker 3 (03:15):
Have a chance to play against one another.

Speaker 2 (03:17):
You can find that information that at PGA dot org,
STPGA dot com, or on the Alamocity goolf Trail website.

Speaker 1 (03:23):
All Right, with the US Open coming up in a
couple of weeks, I found some numbers in the latest
edition of Golf Magazine which just blew me away. First
of all, the very first US Open, played in eighteen
ninety five at Newport Country Club in Rhode Island, there
were only eleven players that made up the entire field.

Speaker 3 (03:42):
Back then, the odds of winning We're good, yes, they were.

Speaker 1 (03:45):
Now this year, ten two hundred and two players entered
to qualify for this year's US Open. It's just incredible
how you go from way back then to now, of course,
but I was blown away by that number of ten
thousand people trying to get in.

Speaker 3 (03:58):
Yeah, and that's pretty cool.

Speaker 2 (03:59):
And I had mentioned that earlier that if you've got
a two point I think it's two point four handicap
index are better, you are eligible to try to qualify
for the US Open. We hosted the local qualifier at
Cedar Creek a couple of weeks ago, and we had
about one hundred people show up for that and all
really good players.

Speaker 3 (04:19):
I was really impressed by the ability level.

Speaker 2 (04:22):
A lot of college players, a lot of hotshot amateurs,
some local mini tour players. There was two sixty nine's
and three seventies that qualified to move on to the
sectional qualifying and that I believe happened last week. And
there's seven or eight different sectional qualifying spots around the
country that feed into the US Open.

Speaker 1 (04:41):
Then incredible. Since we're talking about the US Open, you
have a favorite.

Speaker 2 (04:45):
This year, well, I think we talked about him a
little bit just a few minutes ago in Scheffler. But
I'm also a big fan of Rory McElroy as well.
So if either of those who win, I would be thrilled.
I'd be very happy to see either one win as well.
Rory carries himself so well and he's such a tremendous
advocate for the for the entire tour itself. But I'm

(05:06):
rooting for Scotti is my number one. Roy is my
number two, or maybe one A and one B, whatever
the case might be. Okay, trivia question, what is the
biggest comeback in the final round to win a US Open. Well,
it's got to be Johnny Miller at Oakmont in nineteen
seventy three.

Speaker 1 (05:23):
That's actually uh, that's actually second, I believe, Okay, Arnold
Palmer was seventh, sixty good. Yes, Johnny Miller was then
next six six strokes back before winning at Oakland in
nineteen seventy five.

Speaker 3 (05:37):
So there's your trivia.

Speaker 1 (05:38):
But to come back from seven strokes down to win
a major championship incredible.

Speaker 2 (05:42):
I think those US Open setups are so difficult, so
that if those players at a little further back on
the leaderboards can get the ball rolled and then start
making some putts and they can shoot you know, a sixty.

Speaker 3 (05:52):
Three or whatever they had shot back in those events.

Speaker 2 (05:54):
I guess that's what Johnny Miller shot right, you can
make up some ground and anything's possible and professional golf.

Speaker 1 (06:01):
One more thing about us opens in two thousand, Tiger
Woods shot two bogey free rounds during his historic win
at Pebble Beach. The rest of the field combined among
one hundred and fifty five other golfers combined to have
one round that was bogie free.

Speaker 3 (06:20):
I just saw that as well today.

Speaker 2 (06:22):
I think if that doesn't speak to his dominance, I
don't know what does.

Speaker 1 (06:25):
Just incredible now he was number one for six hundred
some odd weeks in a row. Scott He's been like
one thirty one, forty one fifty, whatever the case might be.
Long way to go, I think he has the capability
to get there. Okay, before we start to wind down,
we still got a couple of minutes left. What do
you suggest that people do in order to go out
and enjoy the Albal City golf trail at its best,

(06:47):
Not just the golf, not just a wine and nine.
Maybe getting dads some gifts for for coming Father's Day.
What's in store beyond Willow Springs at this point, any
other renovating going on that you see for the immediate future.

Speaker 2 (07:00):
Well, I think there's always little things that we're going
to do. There's there's a couple of things coming down
the pike, if you will, that we're paying attention to.
We want to get new cart paths put in at
Mission de Lago and we want to get new cart
paths put in at Northern Hills. Those are both big
projects and they're semi disruptive. But I think people that
play those golf courses often enough recognize that that that

(07:22):
work needs to be done. I don't want to disclose
a whole lot at this point in time beyond that,
because while it's easy to plan for things, we're always
fluid based on finances, whether lots of different things. But
I want to speak also, and you mentioned it, what
can golfers expect? I'm going to ask them and really

(07:42):
kind of beg the audience, if you will, We need
your help too. The golf courses in San Antonio get
a lot of play and we need your help to
keep them.

Speaker 3 (07:52):
As good as possible.

Speaker 2 (07:54):
So anytime you're out, they're fixing ball marks on the
putting surfaces and those in those pitch marks, filling it's
in the fairways, raking your bunkers, listening and paying attention
and obeying the cart path rules would be great. Keeping
up with the pace of play on the golf course
is super important, and all those things really add to
the enjoyment to every other golfer out there behind you.

(08:15):
So if we can ask the customers and the patrons
of the Alma City Golf Trail to help out with
those things, we'd be indebted to you and we'll provide
a better surface and a better golfing experience for everyone.
