Speaker 1 (00:03):
I'm very happy to have against superintendent from the Quary
Golf Club with us. Bruce Berger. Bruce, good morning, welcome back.
How are things going for you, sir?
Speaker 2 (00:10):
Good morning, David. I'm doing well. How about you? I'm
doing great.
Speaker 1 (00:13):
Thanks. Before we start chatting about the quarry itself, I
think I may admit something when I had you on
a few months ago, back in the winter time, when
you had been covering greens. But is I think you
guys celebrated the thirtieth anniversary of the quarry last year.
Speaker 2 (00:26):
Is that correct? It's actually we opened in December of
nineteen ninety three, Okay, so yeah, it's I've been there
thirty two years, so yeah, it's it's kind of crazy.
Speaker 1 (00:42):
It's hard to believe that it's been that long already.
I remember playing that course for the first time. I
was invited to play a scramble, and ironically, the hole
that I started on was the hole that you and
I talked about about it being the signature hole of
the quarry, number seventeen, which is one of my favorite
holes in all of San Antonio. But that's when I
first played it was a nineteen ninety four and so
right now, things are going.
Speaker 2 (01:02):
Well for you guys out there.
Speaker 1 (01:03):
Before we chat about all the new things that are
going on, I'll have one question to ask you about
the water and that lake that is in front of
the number thirteen tea box. During the drought conditions, of course,
it's very low. How did things look now with all
the rains we've had recently, the Corey.
Speaker 2 (01:19):
Lakes come up quite a bit. You know, we've had
a little over ten inches of rain since May twenty third,
and so it's probably come up six or eight feet,
which is nice.
Speaker 1 (01:30):
Yeah, Now when it goes down to the drought conditions
like that, Bruce, I'm sure you see a heck of
a lot more golf balls in there. And do you
guys go and go in there to go in and
retrieve them or just leave them alone?
Speaker 2 (01:42):
You know, I've had some of my guys go in
there when it's just completely dry and it almost looks
like it's snowed down there. But they'll go down there
and get those balls out of the mud. And Yeah,
there's a whole lot of golf balls down there.
Speaker 1 (01:58):
Bruce Burger is our guests from the Corey Golf Club.
Now let's talk about some of the new things going
on right there. I understand you've got a new concession
building going on as well as a teaching facility.
Speaker 2 (02:08):
Yes, that's been under construction for some time and we're
about to wrap that up. It should be open in
the next few weeks. It's going to be really nice. Well,
we have a new putting green that we built adjacent
to the concession facility and it will be lit at
night for a period of time. And the great thing is,
(02:30):
you know, you can stop by there after year round.
You can have a you know, a beer, whatever, something
to eat. It'll be air conditioned, and there is, like
I said, a teaching bay that will be utilized and
some television. Is just a great place to hang out
(02:52):
after the round.
Speaker 1 (02:53):
Bruce Burger's our guests from the Corey Golf Club. Now, Bruce,
when we last had you want you were busy covering
the greens with a reasons that we had. Was there
any damage, Junte any of those greens and how are
things looking right now on those greens.
Speaker 2 (03:06):
No, we didn't have any damage. The covers really did
their jobs and we have coming out out of transition fantastic.
The greens just you know, some people tell me they
don't even look real, but we're cutting them right out
point one point one zero inches, which for a reference
(03:28):
point one two five is an eighth of an inch,
so we're cutting them a little bit below an eighth
of an inch, and they're smooth, they're fast, they're taking
the traffic real well. Frankly, I've had nothing but compliments
on them. So we're very, very happy with the fifth
three D that we planted last summer. In fact, it
(03:50):
was June twenty second of last year, was the first
green was planted that day. So they're just a touch
over a year old and and we're very happy with them.
Speaker 1 (04:01):
Bruce Burgers are our guess from the Corey Golf Club.
Speaker 2 (04:03):
Bruce.
Speaker 1 (04:04):
I obviously opened our little question and answer session here
by asking you about the Corey Lake, but I didn't
ask you about the other lakes on the course, for example,
the one and number five, uh, the one that's just
to the right of or that you're actually to the
right of the number one green. You know, how did
those other lakes do during all the rains we had?
Speaker 2 (04:22):
They did fine. You know, they've got still ways that
we can get rid of access water and they can
maintain their you know their levels. We have a recirculation
pump there by number three T's that pumps water up
to the lake by number four green, and that's what
allows the creeks to flow. And that's that's just kind
(04:47):
of a nice feature to see the flowing water as
you're walking across the bridge to number three green and
as well as five, the two crossings on five. So
it's just a nice feature.
Speaker 1 (04:59):
So you didn't really have any overflows of the greens
that are on the course itself.
Speaker 2 (05:03):
No. You know the great thing about the poor he
is it drained so well, David. It just we've got
underground drainage under the entire golf course. The catch basins
collect the runoff, and we we just drained well and
you can get back to playing golf pretty soon even
(05:24):
after a hard rain.
Speaker 1 (05:26):
Hey brous let's talk about the PGA Tour for a minute.
We all know Scotti Scheffler's at the top and he's
been at there for quite some time. Did you get
a chance to watch it last Saturday when he opened
up his third round with a triple bogee.
Speaker 2 (05:37):
I didn't see the triple bogey, but I watched a
whole lot of last you know, last week's tournament, but
I did not see that.
Speaker 1 (05:45):
Yeah, you don't see that very often among these guys.
But he did bounce back and he's always finishing strong.
Who do you see right now other than Scotty. Now,
over the last couple of months or so, it's been
talking about the way that Tiger was being spoken about
during his heyday, that that Tiger is playing and then
everybody else is playing for a second. Do you see
that same type of thought process right now with Scotty
(06:06):
or maybe that's going to be happening down the road.
What are your thoughts on how well he's been playing.
Speaker 2 (06:11):
You know, David, I do see that with Scotty. The
guy is domminating. Just he's always on the first page
of the leader board in every tournament lately, and he's
kind of a guy to beat right now. And I think,
kind of like Tiger had the Fellas back in the day,
(06:33):
everybody's I don't know, a little maybe a little bit
intimidated by him.
Speaker 1 (06:37):
Well, he's also very very nice and easy going. He
doesn't seem to have much of a temper. He's very
unflappable and nothing seems to FaZe him, even after he
made the triple bogie. I know he made a double
bogue later on that same round, but he still fought back.
And that's just the thing I've always said, the same
thing that Jimmy V said, don't give up. Don't ever
give up, because if you do, you're going to be
defeating yourself. But he's got that instinct in himself to
(06:58):
just keep fighting back the way that we all should.
Speaker 2 (07:00):
Yeah, he's really good at taking it one shot at
the time and staying in the present, and I think
that's a big key to playing good golf.
Speaker 1 (07:09):
Bruce Burger is our guests from the Corey Golf Club.
You can look him up at coreygolf dot com. Bruce,
have you had the opportunity to play with any of
the PGA pros throughout your entire life and if so,
work with It happened.
Speaker 2 (07:20):
Yeah. You know, back when I was at o' kills
back in the day, I played a lot of golf
with Brandall Shambly, who played on tour for a little while,
and you know now he's a golf commentator as you
well know. Gosh, I played with Bill Rogers. Bill such
a nice guy. He played a lot of rounds with him.
(07:45):
And yeah, a few of those guys I've been fortunate
enough to play with and talk to and learn from,
so that's been a good experience.
Speaker 1 (07:53):
And Bill Rogers, of course, if I remember correctly, his
major was the old British Open. So when he won that,
when you got a chance to talk with him and
play with him later, he didn't really seem to be
all that in terms of you know, he wasn't hung
up on himself. He seemed to be a very nice guy.
You would after that.
Speaker 2 (08:11):
Yeah, you know, Bill was the TGA Player of the
Year in nineteen eighty one and I was in college then,
and I believe he won six tournaments that year, and
you know, having followed him and Jack and all those
guys during that time, it was a real treat. I
remember the first time I played with him, I was
(08:32):
I was a little intimidated, you know, because I watched
him on television while I was in college and then
finally get to play with him. But he couldn't be
any more of a down to earth guy and just
just a really fun guy to be around. And I
still see him to this day. He comes out and
plays to Cory, He and Jim Barker play a lot together,
(08:53):
and so it's always good to see him.
Speaker 1 (08:55):
Well, there's the name I haven't heard in a long time,
Jim Barker. How about that one too. Last question before
we let you go, what's your best score ever at
the Cory fifty six?
Speaker 2 (09:04):
I've shot that a few times and hopefully one of
these days maybe a little lower than the map at
sixty six is as good as I've done.
Speaker 1 (09:12):
Well, my best out there came several years ago and
I shot seventy four. Of course, I'm no pro. I've
never received any long, long lasting lessons. I mean, I've
received a couple of lessons, but seventy four is my
bets out there. But Bruce, it's always great chatting with you,
and I hope to be out at your facility sometime
very soon as well. Thank you so much for joining
us this morning.
Speaker 2 (09:31):
Thanks David, look forward to seeing you.
Speaker 1 (09:33):
It is Bruce Berger from the Corey Golf Club. We
