In this fashion bonus episode, Leigh Campbell chats with Instagram styling sensation Sally McKinnon about the subtle tweaks that transform merely wearing clothes into creating polished outfits.

Sally breaks down the current trends including why socks are having a major style moment with everything from ballet flats to sandals, the flattering silhouette of barrel leg jeans (which follow the natural curve of most women's bodies), and why having wardrobe "variety" is the real secret to great style.

They also dive into the versatility of matching sets for winter (think coordinated knits), why oversized blazers aren't going anywhere, and how the modern ballet flat has evolved from its uncomfortable predecessors. Plus, Sally shares both bougie and budget-friendly options for this season's must-have barrel jeans.

Check out Sally's previous episode about ageless dressing here.

Speaker 1 (00:10):
Said you're listening to a MoMA Mia podcast. Mama Mia
acknowledges the traditional owners of land and waters that this
podcast is recorded on Hey you bees, Lee here popping
into your ears on a Sunday, Because on Sunday I
try and do what's called my Sunday reset, and I
get myself semi organized for the week, and that includes
picking out a few key pieces from my wardrobe that

(00:32):
I want to wear. So it made me think you
might want to have a listen to this episode of
Nothing to Wear, the fashion podcast I host, and it
might inspire you for your week ahead. Enjoy. Whoever said
orange is a new pink with seriously disturb morals for
spraying groundbreaking? Oh my god, you have to do it.

Speaker 2 (00:53):
You live for fashion.

Speaker 1 (00:55):
Hello, and welcome to Nothing to Wear, the podcast that
solves fashion problems and levels up your wardrobe. I'm Lee Campbell,
and every week I chat to an expert who helps
us work out how to get more out of the
clothes you already own and tells us exactly what is
and is worth adding to our wardrobes. Styling our clothes
can be confusing, because truthfully, there's a difference between putting

(01:16):
clothes on and pulling together an outfit. From whether or
not we tuck in our tops, to coordinating colors and
even what we wear our socks with. These are little
tweaks that can make our clothes look more modern, but
although they're subtle, they also change each season. Joining me
today is stylus Sally McKinnon. Sally is one of my
favorite accounts to follow on Instagram. She shares her innate

(01:39):
talent for style to over two hundred and fifty thousand
people just on that one platform. She really is a
service to us all. So I've asked Sally for her help.
We received a dressing room dilemma from a confused listener
and they basically asked, so are we still doing the
half tuck with the shirt anymore? Or is that trend over?

(02:00):
So Sally is here to help me dissect what trends
and tweaks are popular right now and how we can
add a little bit more personality to polish our outfits. Sally,
welcome back, How are you.

Speaker 2 (02:12):
I'm well? Thank you Lee, thank you for having me back.

Speaker 1 (02:14):
Thank you. Honestly, the audience loved your first episode. It
was quite a while ago now, so we'll link it
in the show notes, I called you my TV show. Well, people,
I watch an Instagram TV show, You're one of my
favorite shows to watch your life night. We recently had
a tear in your beautiful new leather pants by your
beautiful shoes, and that was a journey, and then it
ended well with a repair.

Speaker 2 (02:35):
It did end well, and it was a journey. People
like yourself were very investors in what happened, and obviously
the fix and thankfully I did find an amazing but
expensive blind seamstress in Melbourne who weaved her delicate little
fingers and she's done a really good job.

Speaker 1 (02:51):
I couldn't believe I screenshot your story to because I
couldn't believe how precise that was. So happy days. It's
nice to have a little escape of a fashion crisis
when the world's kind of burning around us. Anyway, let's
start with a few questions about you before we get
into the topic. What is your biggest fashion impulse purchase
you've ever't?

Speaker 2 (03:11):
Oh, well, this was a really interesting one to think about, Lee,
because I'm really not a very impulsive person. I'm actually
a very considered shopper, and I guess because of what
I do as a personal stylist, personal shopper. I'm in
the shops every day, so I see so much. When
I first started my styling business over fifteen years ago,
I literally would find it really hard to lead a

(03:32):
personal shopping session and not buy something myself, Like it
was terrible.

Speaker 1 (03:36):
Can you teach a side class of how to not
buy something all the time?

Speaker 2 (03:40):
Yeah, pretty much, pretty much. So I've learned to be
much more considered, sleep on things, think about things overnight,
et cetera, et cetera.

Speaker 1 (03:48):
All right, so today we've received a dressing room dilever,
which is pretty funny and fashion is confusing, so they've said,
are we doing the half shirt tuck anymore? Or is
this trend over? What I wanted to talk to you
about is broadly what's in and what's out, because, of course,
on nothing to wear, and in real life you can
wear whatever you want. You kentuck, you can untuck, there

(04:09):
are no rules. But every season there's these little tweaks
to even the classic things we wear and how we
wear them. So let's run through some of those. Get
your opinion. But like I said, people can wear hondies
on the head if they want, So let's start with
the shirt tuck, the French tuck, so the front end
and the outsort of back. Are you still seeing that?

Speaker 2 (04:30):
Do you do that?

Speaker 1 (04:31):
Talk to me about tucking.

Speaker 2 (04:33):
Over the summer break, I talked about maybe starting something
called untucked Tuesday, would you believe? So now we're kind
of talking the opposite. So I'm actually experimenting as I
am today with untucked looks. Yes, and just depending on
my mood and what I'm wearing. Sometimes I'll tuck. Sometimes
I'll completely untucked, but I've probably stopped doing that French

(04:56):
slash half time. I kind of commit either way, So
I feel like I'm either committing to the full tuck
or the complete untuck.

Speaker 1 (05:05):
Interesting and me too, but I used to be such
a French tuck kind of goal.

Speaker 2 (05:09):
Yeah, I think sometimes obviously, if you're wearing Lucy Goosey
on top and bottom, sometimes just a little flunt side
tuck just helps to obviously visually make your legs look longer,
maybe draw the eye up, create a little bit of
a waste like, it's just about creating a little bit
more balance in your outfit. But yeah, pretty much I'm

(05:30):
either committing. It's either leaning really into the tuck with
a full tuck or leaning completely away from tucking.

Speaker 1 (05:37):
Yeah, I'm the same. Like at the moment, I've got
high waisted jeans on and just a plain into gloate
in a belt. So I've tucked because otherwise it would
feel a bit whatever, a bit too undone. But then
I think Copenhagen fashion style influence for me. I've been
doing sort of the sheer skirts, but then I'm definitely
doing a shirt or a T shirt untucked basically cover me.

Speaker 2 (05:56):
The Copenhagen girls they love a good untucked, don't they.
They do not care whatsoever about showing off their waist.

Speaker 1 (06:03):
It's so much easier to go to the bathroom, all right.
The next one that we get asked a lot about,
which irrit me sometimes because it seems to be a
generational debate. Socks. Socks seem to be everywhere. Well, you
know how millennials were ankle socks and that wasn't cool.
But I'm seeing sock styled with ballet flat a Mary Jane. Absolutely,
how do you feel about it?

Speaker 2 (06:24):
Now you're speaking my language. I feel a bit advanced though, Yeah,
you're right. So I started doing a lot of sock
styling last year socks and colored types. In fact, I've
just ordered another two pairs for winter from this great
company in Adelaide. It's a nice Australian based I've ordered
a chocolate and a burgundy. Of course, yeah, because I've
got a beautiful red from them which I wore heaps.

(06:46):
But yeah, I really got into socks last year. And
two things I'll say about socks and stockings. A it's
a really interesting way to add a little bit of
visual interest to your outfit, a little bit of quirk,
a little bit of personality. But it does divide opinions,
particularly when you show a sock with a sandal, yeah,

(07:07):
which I love.

Speaker 1 (07:09):
I actually too. I do too. I've done it once
or twice. I do feel a bit silly, and I
know I need to get that out of my head.
I think for me, a sort of sock with a shoe,
obviously not going to the gym, a sock with a
shoe in terms of like a flat or a winter thing,
I really need time to plan out that outfit. It's
not something I can just chuck on. I need to

(07:29):
marinate in.

Speaker 2 (07:30):
It, absolutely, And I think that's like anything in terms
of getting dressing in your personal style, it should be considered.
And so that's where I built up a collection of
socks that so, for example, I really love a red
sock or a red panty hose or a red tight
And so if you've got a red bag or a
red shoe or something else red, a red belt, for example,

(07:51):
then it's just a really lovely tie. And it just
shows that your whole outfit is quite considered and curated.
But I do appreciate that for some people, it feels
a little bit scary, you know, the whole socks and sandals.
It's not to say every like I'm not talking a
birkenstock sandal, yes, and a sock or a stocking. I'm
talking about a beautiful elevated heeled peeto sandal.

Speaker 1 (08:14):
Or like a page sandal, yeah.

Speaker 2 (08:17):
Something like that, or just something that's got like a
simple strap over the front of the foot, over the
toes and then strap around the ankle. Love a good
pointed put with my swing back, and I'm loving slim
backs with panty hose. And the advantage of it is
that it really does extend the life of your shoes,
so to once upon a time, you know, okay, sandals

(08:37):
are for sandal weather, but why not wear sandal in
the middle of winter with rather than having to buy
a whole war drube of boots.

Speaker 1 (08:46):
So you're Melbourne based as well, you know that's a
great way too. Where I mean a slingback's covered at
the front, but your heels are a bit cold. But
if you've got a beautiful stocking or a sock and
it can look very cool. Matching sets. I want to
talk about matching sets because for me, I think linen
shorts and a shirt very summary. But matching sets can
be anything a suit, that's right, but they have been
having a huge moment. I generally think more summary, are

(09:09):
we still feeling a matching set? How do we kind
of do that for winter.

Speaker 2 (09:13):
Under I think a matching set in whatever form it takes.
So whether it's as you said, a summer lemon shirt,
linen short, whether it is a beautiful two piece suit,
whether it's a skirt in top blouse, whether it's a fun, colorful,
alime inspired colord. I just think they are something that

(09:35):
every woman should have in their wardrobe because it's just foolproof.
They're great for those days that when you're not feeling
inspired with your wardrobe. Nothing's kind of standing out. You
put something on that matches and it's just so seamless.

Speaker 1 (09:48):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (09:49):
So I think going into the winter months, in terms
of matching sets that you'll see around, I mean, it
can even be a beautiful KNT and matching trouser.

Speaker 1 (09:57):
Yeah, a knit skirt that I never in my head
categorized as a matching set, because again I'm thinking linen
beach sets. But the designer thought about it. I didn't.
It's like putting on a dress, but a bit.

Speaker 2 (10:09):
Most exactly, and that's when you look at it like
that as well. But yeah, they've put all the hard
work into it. They have decided that okay, this goes
with this. It's not only a really simple way to
get dressed, but it's also, in my opinion, it's so chic.
It's so cheap and simple and as I said, it's
kind of full proof. So whether it's a suit, I

(10:30):
love suits. I always feel my best in a matching suit.
Adding obviously come winter you can add some boots and
a beautiful rollnck underneath. But I don't think matching sets
are going anywhere. And the end of the day, really,
what it is Lee is was tonal dressing.

Speaker 1 (10:46):
Isn't it, But without having to try and find the
right color. If they're not a matching set and you've
got other items, you can then mix and match with
your jeans, with your other stuff.

Speaker 2 (10:54):
Absolutely, and that's the other beauty is at the versatility
to then mix and match the two individual pieces is separate.
So it's just a it's a win win in my.

Speaker 1 (11:03):
No brain, And they're going nowhere talk to you about
oversized blazers because I will be buried in one. But
are we still doing this boxy fit a silhouette slimming down?
Is it about what we were on the bottom, because

(11:24):
then I want to ask you about genes which you
are getting that barrel volumes? So what's happening in the
oversized blazer section?

Speaker 2 (11:30):
Look, I think with any you open up your kitchen
cabinet and you need to have a variety of ingredients
to make a great pasta, etc. Your wardrobe is kind
of the same. It's just good to have options. So
whilst you might not be someone who wants an entire
wardrobe of oversized blazers, it's good to have one or

(11:53):
two and then you might have variety so that perhaps
when you do finally get on the barrel leg jean bandwagon,
and you then put your oversized blazer on and maybe
feel that it's a little bit too overwhelming that you
can then put on a blazer if blazers are your things.
That feels a little bit neater I'm having in the wardrobe.

(12:16):
I'm not sure that we're ever going back, or certainly
not anytime soon. We're not going back to the Camilla
and Mark dimmer blazer that was restrictive, tight fitted short.
We're not going back to that. I think now that
we've all started to wear more relaxed blazers on our body,

(12:36):
we realized just goddamn how comfortable they are. So there's
that side of things as well.

Speaker 1 (12:41):
It's funny you reference that one particularly because I love
thrifting and often I'm flicking through it. I see a
Camilla and Make label and oh my god, and I
pull it out and I'm like, oh, I think it
was beautiful, but it's that fitted, more kind of classic
office silhouette that we used to wear. Like, can people
start getting rid of their oversized Camilla and Mark anytime soon?

Speaker 2 (12:58):
That's right? And yeah, well they will be. But also
I think there's that fine line for a lot of
people between oversized and ridiculously oversized. So that's where I
was say, for someone like me. You know, I'm very tall,
so I can do that very oversized silhouette because it
doesn't drown me. Whereas I would just say when I'm

(13:19):
working with clients, I just use the term relax relax.
I really like a relaxed blazer. Yes, there is a
big difference, Denim.

Speaker 1 (13:27):
We've been doing wide leg for a long time. I'm
into it. I am obsessed with barrel leg or whatever
we're calling it. It's also called carrots sometimes. Yeah, yeah, Yes,
there's rumors that Skinny's coming back, which I don't mind
if people were skinny. I've seen some really chic outfits
again back with the sort of relaxed or volumeless tops.
It looks great with a straight leg. How are we

(13:49):
going with danim? It does anything go?

Speaker 2 (13:51):
Anything goes? To be honest, it's quite interesting, this whole
barrel leg gene, because I actually got my first I
mean I didn't even call them a barrel leak. There
were just this really interesting silhouette. The first ones I bought,
which were coming up to three years ago from Alpha
sixty who still do the by the way, and I've
got them in a beautiful indigo and black, and I've

(14:14):
done lots of content about the style of Gene and
again it's a little bit like the socks and sandals.
People either love it or hate it, and you get
all the comments, Ah, you look like your bow leged.
I mean, who cares?

Speaker 1 (14:25):
Who cares?

Speaker 2 (14:26):
I just think that the Blazer conversation that we just had,
it's just about having variety in your bardrobe. It's like
the tools in your toolbox. And whether you have a
skinny pair of jeans, a barrel leg, a high rise
wide leg, a boyfriend style, it's great to have a
bit of variety because you can kind of change up
your look constantly with a great pair of jeans. But

(14:49):
if you aren't on the barrel leg jean wagon, will
they be at any year's time? I don't think so.
I just think they're another silhouette to have in your
wardrobe that you pull out when you want to put
a look together. Look that kind of feels the way
you want to feel that day. So anything goes anything,
and there's so goddamn comfortab.

Speaker 1 (15:10):
I agree with you. I bought a pair of thrifted
ones probably about three years ago when I was in
Texas in Dallas, and again I didn't even know what
they were, as you. I mean, they have the best
vintage over there, and I was looking back at old
photos and the reason now I know they're barrel legg
but I just thought they were cool and vintage. And
I don't have much of an ankle. I've got to
sort of just go to leg foot and so the

(15:31):
illusion of the balloony kind of gives you a bit
of an ankle with little kitten hell and come see comfee.
So I don't think they're going anywhere. They're just peaking now.
But they've always been around.

Speaker 2 (15:41):
They have been around. And you know the other thing
that I think, and again it's a bit of a myth.
And I know one of our questions today is about
rules and things like that, but I think what women
don't realize until they try on that style of gene.
I'm claiming the word flattering because it's not a negative word, no,
but they are so flattering on many women's shapes.

Speaker 1 (16:01):
And because you dress them on for a living, so
it's not just on you. You've seen them on so many.

Speaker 2 (16:05):
People because they follow the curves, the natural curve of
most women's bodies. I agree, Yeah, they're really beautiful. Gene
pro barrel forever.

Speaker 1 (16:16):
Yeah, talk to me about some winter shoes, specifically ballet flats,
and I mean, I'm a loafer for life. I love loafers.
I just find them more comfortable. Ballet flat seem to
be everywhere. There is even an offshoot like that at
leisure wear ballet flat gross say that I wanted to
try and do it, and then I just felt silly

(16:36):
and I reminded myself that I don't have to do
every trend. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (16:39):
Look, I'll never say evenly, but no, that doesn't appeal
to me.

Speaker 1 (16:41):
Yeah, it feels a bit flash in the pan for me.

Speaker 2 (16:44):
And I love a bit of that leisure wear, but
not those No, Okay, I think a traditional ballet flat.
When we think of the silhouette of that traditional ballet flat,
do you remember sand Bag? I'm still around, and I
think if we think of that very classic style, personally,
I don't love that so much these days. I really
love a ballet flat that covers a little bit more

(17:05):
of the foot, almost a bit like I call it
a glove style ballet.

Speaker 1 (17:09):
That what do you call it? See, I call toe cleavage,
So I say, there's like no toe cleavage because it's
coming up quite high.

Speaker 2 (17:15):
Yeah, but I think that is so chic and polished.

Speaker 1 (17:18):
And you can walk better, you don't have to kind
of hold them on as much.

Speaker 2 (17:21):
Absolutely, and then it also lends itself much better to
then doing a potentially little fun sock or a panty
hot ah.

Speaker 1 (17:29):
Yeah, true, without looking like you're addressed as a little
girl or anything like that, you know. Yeah, and a
square toe we're seeing a bit.

Speaker 2 (17:36):
Yeah, I do love that little bit of a square toe.
I think that's a really cool sheek look. Obviously it's
still got the pointed toe, which I don't know whether
you're technically call that a ballet flight probably not, But yeah,
I like a little bit of a square toe rather
than that traditional dainty round toe. So a square toe
is very cool. And then I'm sure you've seen a
lot of Mary Jane ballet flats are around as well.

(17:58):
We kind of strapped across the top of the foot
and look cool as well. A lot of the feedback
I've had from our hollowers on Instagram when I started
talking about ballet flats. And again this is just where
people's thinking can be so rigid. People think back to
old ballet flats, you know, and how they were so
flat and uncomfortable. Yes, but shoes have changed a lot.

(18:20):
All I say is go and try a ballet flat
in twenty twenty five, Yes, and see how you feel. Yeah,
I can wear them all day round. Yeah, the ones
that I wear are so comfortable.

Speaker 1 (18:30):
And try different brands, you know, like with Barefootwear and
Frankie four and you know, Joe Mercer are some of
the cumpfyis shoes I've ever worn. So it might be
brands that you might have thought are daggy or that
you just aren't for you. But if you're going to
wear them day and day out, go try them on
and make sure that they're going to be comfortable, because
a cheap ballet flat or a one that's not made
well might be too thin. I mean I wore a
pair in London late last year and walked thirty thousand

(18:53):
steps and my back was buggered because I had no support. Yeah,
and I thought a flat shoe, I'll be fine, But no,
they're not all the same. It's very expensive.

Speaker 2 (19:13):
How Wondred.

Speaker 1 (19:17):
We're just going to bring things that on the theme
of dos and don'ts, but things just we love or
that are instant style updates or that kind of illustrate
what we've talked about. Yeah, let's start with bougie. Let's
go high first. What's okay?

Speaker 2 (19:31):
Well, this is a bit bougie. Then, Funnily enough, I
had no idea that we were going to talk about
barrel leg jeans. So coincidentally, my bougie purchase was not
my purchase. Sorry's just to find is the barrel jeans
from Lowaiba.

Speaker 1 (19:47):
Oh don't but I've.

Speaker 2 (19:49):
Specifically chosen a beautiful indigo blue denim and they are
one and seventy two dollars.

Speaker 1 (19:57):
Oh my god. If I won the lotto, I would
go straight There are they highways?

Speaker 2 (20:02):
Yep, I'll send you the link.

Speaker 1 (20:04):
No, don't, don't send me the note. I mean, we'll
put it in the show notes, but don't send it
to me personally. That leather jacket that they've done this season,
the chocolate jacket with.

Speaker 2 (20:13):
The gathered logo, amazing.

Speaker 1 (20:15):
As soon as I win, my bougie is not bougie
at all, but it's more expensive and less fabric than
my budget. I'm going really good here. And it's funny
because just as we started recording, I was buying this,
so I haven't got it yet, but I clicked by
online because I have wanted a chocolate leather belt real
and I wanted a real leather and look there everywhere

(20:35):
for you know, one hundred and twenty one hundred and
thirty dollars and I just thought, really, I mean sure,
But then I just chucked it into Google, didn't I
I clicked purchase right as we started chatting Sally. The
Italian leather Garrison belt. It's Men's from Uniglow.

Speaker 2 (20:50):
Well, I'm going to be clicking on that link on
it's so good.

Speaker 1 (20:53):
It's a beautiful sort of matte leather because some affordable
belts and sometimes look cheap. And then it kind of
just a little very simple brushed buckle of like a
goldie bronze.

Speaker 2 (21:03):
I was going to ask you what color the buckle was.

Speaker 1 (21:05):
Yeah, the black has a silver, but no the brown,
and it is forty nine ninety five. I got a
medium in the men's. I do find you indigo size
is quite small, so I'm sure that's fine. But I've
got from my grandmother one of those traditional old belt
hole punches that I inherited. Yeah, it's got a wheel
with all different and you just punch a hole.

Speaker 2 (21:24):
And I just borrow that from you.

Speaker 1 (21:26):
No one knows I've got it because I wouldn't get
it back. It's so fair now they do now, all right,
what's your budget?

Speaker 2 (21:33):
Okay? If the low Way barrel leg indigo jeans at
over one thousand dollars or a bit out of your budget,
I suggest you head into your local cotton On store
this weekend. Well, they're equally dark indigo barrel leg jean
that is currently on sale. Oh my gosh, and he's
forty nine dollars. Wow.

Speaker 1 (21:52):
How do they full price?

Speaker 2 (21:54):
Seventy dollars?

Speaker 1 (21:55):
Wow? I know see there everywhere, aren't they? They're denim, agreed, honestly.
I mean we all wish we could shop designer, But
at the same time, even if I had the money,
I probably wouldn't, you know, bar one or two pieces
because there's such great affordable fashion out there. Well, I
wanted to bring something that I've been wearing untucked. It's
from Big w It's very cool. It's called the nineteen
sixty four denim company Women's shack it, so when I

(22:19):
wear it, it looks like a denim shirt, but it's
that midweight that's really good for transseasonal. Not quite a jacket,
not quite a shirt. Thirty five dollars ie sized up.
I actually got a twelve, and it's so cool because
I've been wearing with a lot of sheer or sequin
long skirts because the kind of heavier weight and casual,
more masculine denim but with a feminine bottom. I'm loving it.

(22:42):
I don't tuck it in. It's lightweight enough to tuck
in if you did want to kind of do a
double denim or a wide leg pant.

Speaker 2 (22:47):
So you could button it up and wear it as
a shirt.

Speaker 1 (22:50):
Yeah, absolutely you could. But I button it up all
the way anywhere we're out because I've got sort of
little lulu lemon bloomers under my shear stuff, so I'm
not going to flash my full undies, but i still
don't really want people to see what's under the skirt,
so it just sits sort of past the bum, not
quite in to go, but quite a dark denim, so
it's not too casual, and it's just the perfect medium

(23:11):
weight and it's thirty five dollars so you.

Speaker 2 (23:13):
Could do that with the cotton on barrel, Jean, Oh.

Speaker 1 (23:15):
My god, bargain bargain while we save up for our
fancy designer.

Speaker 2 (23:21):
Yeah, I love it. It's funny you mentioned that she's skirtly.
I I feel like you Sydney girls are loving that
look at the moment, or maybe just everyone in the
mum and me offices.

Speaker 1 (23:31):
Yeah, no, me has started.

Speaker 2 (23:32):
It's quite common. Yeah, seen me a wear it.

Speaker 1 (23:34):
And you know why, I also love it because again,
I do a lot of thrifting. I will find a
really great dress, but maybe I don't like the top,
and so as it's getting cooler, I've either literally cut
the top off and then used to belt to keep
the skirt on, or I just wear now that it's
getting cooler. You know, a chunky knit over the top,
and I've got a lovely skirt and no one knows
what's under there. So if you've got a beautiful an

(23:55):
evening dress or the top's way too dressy, chuck on
a knit and you've got a skirt. Sally, thank you
so much for joining us. I'd love to sit next
to you on a long haul flight because we could
just talk fashion time. Please come back soon, and thank
you so much for joining me. Thank you Lee, thank
you for listening to Nothing to Wear, and don't forget
to sign up to the matching newsletter. There's a link

(24:17):
in the show notes and it's free. See you next week.
