I am the director of Healthy Baby, Healthy Child at
the Boston Public Health Commission. It's one of the longest
running maternal child health home visiting programs.
Speaker 1 (01:18):
Oh wow in the country. That's awesome, right, give us
a little bit more. What do you guys do?
Speaker 4 (01:21):
It's an amazing free, confidential program and it's voluntary. We
have wonderful public health nurses, social workers and community health
workers and they go to families in their homes and
they provide them medical education resources, They help with just
about anything.

Love that. Who is this for?
Speaker 4 (01:41):

This program is.
Speaker 4 (01:42):
For families living in Boston who are pregnant or parenting
with children up to the age of five.

Got it? And what do you guys do? What's the help?
What do you guys do?

So we go and meet the families literally where they're
at and provide support. So our nurses provide health education.
We help We teach families about prenatal care, what to
do when they're pregnant. We teach them about postpartum care.
What's postpartum depression? How do you seek services for that?
We help them get connected to services for their kids,

whether it's daycare, help them signing up for schools, snap benefits, housing.
We do so much. Social workers same thing. They are
talking to families on the phone. We know that postpartum
depression is at all time high. Many folks are experiencing
perinatal mental health issues, and our social workers meet with
families and help them navigate that and help them get

support externally as well. In our community health workers. They
literally do everything. They are so amazing. They are helping
folks get diapers again, sign up for food stamps, get formula,
just about anything. Our program does it.

Love that, Okay, So when you're a first time parent,
this definitely can help you. So there's nothing like this.
Speaker 4 (02:52):
So this program has been around for about forty plus
years now, and initially it was just Healthy Baby. This
program was founded and at the time, Dorchester, Roxbury and
Mattapan were known as the Corridor of Death due to
the high infant and maternal mortality and morbidity rate, and
so this program was founded. Eventually they added Healthy Child
(03:13):
to make it a more well rounded program. And the
program's just been fighting the disparities and helping to support
families so that they're thriving and doing well in the
city of Boston.

I love that, all right? Cool? And how can if
someone wants to get it, you know, who's pregnant right now?
Where can they go? So they can call us?
Speaker 4 (03:30):
Our number is six one seven five three four five eight,
three to two and the person can call, a provider
can call, so a doctor or a nurse, anyone can call.
We just want to help, So just call and we'll
walk you through the referral process. There is a contact
so they can contact us at HBHC at BPHC dot org.

help with housing we help fathers. We have a father
engagement program, we have a duela program, we have a pantry,
so we do a lot in the community, and we

We're going to be having free some flower seeds, kids
kid for young gardeners. We'll be creating sunflower crowns and
advisors Grove Hall Library from ten am to one pm
and it's hosted by the Sunflower Project one of the
creators is Ukia Holmes, who is a Roxbury legend, an artist,
an illustrator who she's been doing the Sunflower project for
a while now. But it's definitely a fun event for

And then the Beautiful Resistance is also hosting an event
in honor of Coreta Scott King's nine ninth birthday at
