Speaker 1 (00:00):
Onward to a sports brief now the Husker Buzz edition.
Sean Callahan, I haven looking Rosie.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
All right, Shanau, what in the name of Tom Osborn
is going on? You warned us about this yesterday that
the transfer portal is going to be a wild ride.
But I don't think anybody thought that Emma Johnson would
enter the portal, especially the way he was playing in November.
What do you know about that?
Speaker 3 (00:20):
Yeah, it's hard to wrap your arms. I mean if
you're just a just an everyday Huscar fan that wants
to go to the stadium one of the games and
enjoys watching the team play, and you see a guy
play well late in the year and you're like, wow,
we got a running back and to see him go
in and it's hard. I mean, you know the advice
I think some people give these kids, and just what
the portal and NIL have done to the game. Now,
(00:45):
Emmitt's father made an interesting tweet last night. He quote
tweeted his son's statement and he said, relationships over money.
But Emmit's profile and Twitter has money bags on it,
and he called himself e Money. So you know, it's
just so hard to put a finger on on what
this is all is because what are you know with
the new offensive coordinator coming in? Was he insinuating that
(01:07):
Ematt doesn't have the relationships with the offensive staff that
he did before. But at the same time, Dana Holgerson
might have made Emma Johnson look the best we've seen
him look since he's been in Nebraska.
Speaker 2 (01:18):
I don't that makes no sense to me. What you
say is exactly right, but it makes no sense because
of just that he was not getting the playing time
under Marcus Sadderfield. When Dana Holgerson came in, he was
one of the guys Holgerson talked about saying, Hey, we
got some dudes here that I don't know why they're
not playing, and Emma Johnson's one of them.
Speaker 1 (01:38):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:38):
And this is this is odd because, as you pointed
up yesterday, Sean, the portal technically isn't even open yet.
Speaker 3 (01:47):
So who's the guys are going to jump on it?
Speaker 1 (01:49):
Now?
Speaker 2 (01:49):
Who's talking to these guys? Who are they hearing from?
Speaker 3 (01:52):
Well, yeah, everybody, but they want to get their name
out to get going because the next two weeks start Monday,
you'll be able to go on official visits every day
of the week for fourteen days, so that will be
what everyone's gunning for, is to get your visits set
up and whatnot. So a guy like Immick Johnson could
(02:14):
be on a campus Monday or Tuesday of next week
taking a visit and he's lining probably some of those
things up behind the scenes, and that's the case. But yeah,
it just doesn't add up. And you know, the reason
he got to play late in the year too, was
Ramire Johnson was hurt. I think people forget that Ramie
Johnson had been playing more than him, and it had
been more Ramiir Johnson, Dante Daldell getting the reps and
(02:37):
then obviously Emmitt got going late. So I think there
was a lack of trust probably on his part, that
he always felt like he was the odd man out,
and then he got his opportunity both years last year
and this year in similar situations when Gabe Bourban Junior
and Ramie Johnson got hurt a year ago, Ramire got
hurt or dinged up this year and that's what allowed
(02:58):
him to have his best moment.
Speaker 2 (03:00):
So now Husker fan is wondering who's next if Emma
Johnson goes and some of the other dudes go like
Jamari Butler goes, who's next?
Speaker 1 (03:13):
What what? What? What?
Speaker 3 (03:15):
Yeah? I own guest, you're gonna get lower tier roster guys.
But remember, I mean when you break down the numbers
of what one oh five is, only seventy current players
that are scholarship guys will be back on this team
next year and then in scholarship and walk on, excuse me,
And then you're gonna have twenty newcomers coming in to
get to ninety and then about fifteen portal editions. So
(03:39):
it's seventy plus twenty plus fifteen. I mean that's kind
of what you're looking at. When this team gets to
one oh five, I mean this, this was going to
have to happen. You're gonna have players move on and leave.
I do have a lot of confidence that they're gonna
get really good players in the portal. They have the
money and the resources to compete, and Dan Holgerson's gonna
have a brand of offensive players and he wants to
(04:02):
fit what he wants to do, and getting a running back,
getting a wide receiver in the portal is not that difficult.
You will be able to find guys fairly easily. But
as a fan of the program, I'm sure you get
attached to a player and you start to believe in
Emma Johnson. And then that's the hard thing about all this.
Speaker 2 (04:18):
I think for everybody, it truly is Sean. And again,
as you pointed up, and as Dave Remington pointed up
on social media yesterday, embrace the chaos. That's what this is.
You got to have a lot of trust that the
program is being guided by people who know what they're doing.
The big difference between this year and last year, for example,
Nebraska had a very robust nil collective, but now everybody
(04:40):
has money because of the NCAA settlement. Every Power for
program is going to spend at least fifteen million dollars
on players in addition to what they are able to
raise privately. And your numbers don't lie, and they're pretty stubborn.
It looks like Nebraska is going to have to lose
about seventy guys on the current roster to get to
the one oh five considering the twenty recruits and the
(05:01):
fifteen transfers. And that's not just going to be third stringers.
It's going to have to be people that were on
the field.
Speaker 3 (05:07):
Well, they had thirty players or so do senior day.
Not all those guys are leaving. So yeah, after the
senior Day, another forty would have to go to get
down forty ish players. Forty five whatever the number is,
would have to go from your roster once you add
the twenty and then fifteen transfers or so in Matt rule,
(05:28):
you know say ideally seven offensive transfer, seven defensive transfers,
and you know maybe a specialist in there in that group.
So yeah, there's there's a lot more coming in. Monday
is going to be you know, the day for everywhere.
I mean a lot of names that aren't high profile,
they're not getting the big you know, Hayes Faucet tweet
when they leave, a lot of those guys are going
to be going in the portal on Monday. You know,
(05:50):
it will just be a more data dump that day
where all those names hit at one point.
Speaker 2 (05:54):
The other question is the Bowl game. You might illuminate
the new rule that allows for believe it or not,
incoming freshman at what semester to play on the ball
roster or be on the ball roster.
Speaker 1 (06:08):
What is the rule change.
Speaker 3 (06:10):
I don't believe they're allowed to play, but they're allowed
to practice. I mean these kids are showing up the
campus on the twenty first or twenty second. The team's
going to leave if it's New York, on the twenty third.
I mean, so there's no physical way you could just say,
Christian Williams, you've been here for a day. There is
an acclamation.
Speaker 1 (06:29):
You're starting Christian Jones.
Speaker 3 (06:31):
Yeah, you're starting a linebacker. But thirteen thirteen of the
twenty are going to come into Lincoln early. And the team,
if they go to New York, which I think everybody's
believing that's where they're heading, they're going to leave on Monday,
the twenty third and be out there for almost an
entire week. And those kids will be a part of
that entire week in New York City.
Speaker 1 (06:52):
All Right. Our Huskar insider Sean Callahan with us every morning,
helping us embrace the chaos.
