Speaker 1 (00:00):
Star 1013, it's Marcus in the morning. Producer Taylor is here.
It's Thursday. Good morning.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
Good morning.
Speaker 1 (00:04):
Harry Styles, we gave away that flyaway. Gotta say what's
up to our girl, Teresa, who's been listening to the
show every morning for 13 years.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
Oh my God.
Speaker 1 (00:11):
Finally cashed in.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
I love it.
Speaker 1 (00:12):
On that torture.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
She's gonna have so much fun.
Speaker 1 (00:14):
Teresa from San Jose. She won the full trip. You
can see the video on the Star 1013 FM Instagram.
Wait till the next one. Could be you. I don't know.
We went to the Giants game yesterday.
Speaker 2 (00:25):
We did.
Speaker 1 (00:26):
We did, and We didn't pay attention to a lick
of it.
Speaker 2 (00:29):
Yeah, I don't think we watched any of it.
Speaker 1 (00:31):
We were with our boss and our VP of marketing.
We adore them. And we all just sat around and
drank and talked in the club level. I peripherally watched
the baseball game. And I'm kind of sort of glad
that we didn't see the game because we missed the
most epic meltdown in Giants history. What do you mean?
They were up 9-3 in the ninth inning.
Speaker 2 (00:52):
Now.
Speaker 1 (00:53):
You play softball. You know that's like the end of
the game, right?
Speaker 2 (00:55):
Yeah, like it's over after that.
Speaker 1 (00:57):
They lost the game 10-9 after giving up seven runs
in the top of the ninth inning. True story.
Speaker 2 (01:03):
My jaw is on the floor.
Speaker 1 (01:05):
I can't with this team. I can't.
Speaker 2 (01:07):
Are you serious? How do you mess it up that bad? Like,
weren't we on like a low-key winning streak for two seconds?
Speaker 1 (01:12):
Be the Giants, I guess.
Speaker 2 (01:13):
Oh, my God. You know, I'm so glad that we
weren't paying attention. That would have pissed me off.
Speaker 1 (01:18):
My blood pressures.
Speaker 2 (01:19):
No. I'm so not.
Speaker 1 (01:21):
Look, I don't like to rant about the sports. That's
not what this show is about at all. But like
the pain. San Francisco and New York, they have it
melted down this bad.
Speaker 2 (01:33):
No, I mean.
Speaker 1 (01:34):
It was terrible.
Speaker 2 (01:34):
Oh, God.
Speaker 1 (01:35):
Anyway, I digress. Let's move on to greener pastures.
Speaker 2 (01:39):
Yeah. You know, honestly, I'm just so good. I'm so
glad we're so good at yapping.
Speaker 3 (01:43):
Yeah. You know?
Speaker 2 (01:44):
We can get really carried away.
Speaker 1 (01:45):
That was fun. I was like, oh, what a great
bar this is. Oh, there's a game going on.
Speaker 3 (01:48):
Oh, yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:50):
One of the craziest endeavors I think I've ever undertaken
in my entire life. I just bought half of a steer.
And I realized this conversation could be unsettling if you
don't eat meat. So I apologize in advance, but I do.
My mom's family raised cattle in Northern California. I'm well-versed.
I made the decision in January to buy some cow.
Speaker 2 (02:10):
And like a half a cow. And you haven't stopped
talking about it since you decided it.
Speaker 1 (02:15):
Well, it has been a journey because it all sounded
very poetic in January when I decided to make this move.
I thought to myself, oh, the price of beef is
going through the roof. You know, to get a good
ribeye is going to cost you 30 bucks a pound.
Hamburger meats, at least 12. If you buy the good stuff,
you buy the good, good. so I bought half a
cow and I had to buy a freezer, but even
(02:37):
with the freezer cost, my beef cost pound for pound
across the board is like $ 9. The only issues are
it's a lot to move. And now, now it's happening.
The cow goes to the butcher shop today and it's
557 pounds of cow, which is going to be processed
(03:00):
down to about 250. And then They're just going to
hang it at the butcher shop. Chef Dolan at 25
Lusk says, why don't we go ahead and butcher it
ourselves for the food podcast? You don't really know where
your food comes from.
Speaker 3 (03:12):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (03:13):
So I have to transport it from the butcher shop
to 25 Lusk. So from Watsonville to San Francisco in
one day and then spend, I don't know, untold hours butchering.
So now the logistics are getting to me.
Speaker 2 (03:29):
And how are we transporting this cow?
Speaker 1 (03:31):
That part, I don't know. I, I, I made the
craziest text yesterday to my guy Micah Newsy out of
Redwood City. He's the guitarist that I roll with sometimes
at events. And I wrote, hey, you want to take
a road trip with me? I just bought a cow
and I need a truck and someone I can stand
to spend half a day with.
Speaker 2 (03:51):
That's the most Marcus text ever.
Speaker 1 (03:54):
And the thing about Micah is he does country music.
So we were talking. He goes, dude, this is going
to give me hella cred with the cowboy community. Because
he's going to saddle up and he's going to do it.
He has an eight-foot-long Ford F-250 or something, and we're
going to do it.
Speaker 3 (04:09):
Wow.
Speaker 1 (04:10):
This is a journey. By the way, I have to
leave the office early on 9-14. That's when it's going down.
Speaker 2 (04:14):
Oh, thanks for letting me know now.
Speaker 1 (04:16):
Just FYI. Okay.
Speaker 2 (04:17):
We've got half a cow coming our way. So excited. Okay,
so wait. Are you going to make me food with
the cow?
Speaker 1 (04:25):
Of course. This will be burgers, steaks, short ribs.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
So I'm also benefiting from this endeavor.
Speaker 1 (04:29):
Everybody's benefiting. The only people that aren't benefiting, frankly, the
hardest part about this, if you're thinking about it, and again,
we're talking about the fact, and I'll wrap it up,
I'm buying half a cow, but at first I just
want a quarter cow because a half a cow, that's
a lot of beef. And so I'm trying to find
another family to go halfsies with me. Everybody wants it
as a good idea until you start talking numbers because
(04:50):
it's a, you know, it's a thousand bucks per family.
But if you think about it again, that's like eight,
nine bucks a pound.
Speaker 2 (04:55):
Also, who is this? Everybody like who else is, this
doesn't seem in high demand.
Speaker 1 (05:00):
I've asked three families and nobody wants to commit. Nobody
has the room. Well, yeah.
Speaker 3 (05:05):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (05:05):
I mean, you barely had the room. You had to
buy a whole freezer.
Speaker 1 (05:08):
Oh, it's, it's massive too. This is how I know
I'm an adult. I'm like so excited about my new freezer.
I keep looking at it and opening it. You'll get it.
Speaker 4 (05:16):
You know what?
Speaker 1 (05:17):
When you get older, Taylor, and you have a family,
you'll get it.
Speaker 2 (05:19):
No, honestly.
Speaker 1 (05:20):
You'll buy a stack of a washer dryer and be like, yes,
I've arrived.
Speaker 2 (05:23):
That's how I felt about my air fryer. Because I
have the really cute pink Paris Hilton air fryer. So
when I got that, trust me, I felt the same way.
Speaker 1 (05:32):
Major appliances will put you in a place when you're
an adult.
Speaker 2 (05:35):
Because you spent a lot of money on it. And
you got half a cow going in that thing.
Speaker 1 (05:39):
It's going to be good, too. 100% grass fed. Very excited. Anyway,
I'll wrap it up.
Speaker 2 (05:43):
Please.
Speaker 3 (05:44):
But....
Speaker 1 (05:45):
I'll keep you posted on the journey as Mike and
I will be in the truck headed to Watsonville soon enough.
This is always a tough subject for me. I want
to say what's up to Cece and Hayward. She writes
in and she's basically asking, how do you break up
with somebody you're not in love with? Even if they're
a good person.
Speaker 4 (06:04):
Been there.
Speaker 1 (06:05):
How many times?
Speaker 2 (06:06):
I don't know. Lost count.
Speaker 1 (06:07):
Taylor is a straight up heartbreaker.
Speaker 3 (06:09):
I can tell.
Speaker 2 (06:10):
No, I'm what they call a serial monogamous. So I
just love dating people.
Speaker 3 (06:16):
Right.
Speaker 1 (06:16):
And then breaking their hearts.
Speaker 3 (06:18):
Well.
Speaker 1 (06:18):
Throwing them off to the side of the road.
Speaker 2 (06:19):
It's inevitable.
Speaker 1 (06:20):
So anyway, she writes, good morning, Marcus. Good morning, Taylor.
I listen to you guys every single morning. And I
have a question. I love my boyfriend dearly. We've been
together for four years. There's nothing bad I can say
about him. He's loving. He's loyal. He treats me incredibly well.
He's never done anything to deserve anything less than the
same for me. But sometime over the last year, I
realized as much as I love him, he is not
the man I want to spend the rest of my
life with. I know breaking up is going to crush him.
(06:43):
At this point, I think I'm just delaying the inevitable,
probably making it worse. I feel horrible to hurt somebody
who has done absolutely nothing wrong, especially when I do
love him. I'm just not in love with him. How
do I break a good person's heart as gently as possible?
And how do I know I'm not making the biggest
mistake of my life?
Speaker 2 (07:00):
If your man said that about you, would you still
want to be with him?
Speaker 1 (07:04):
No, you shouldn't.
Speaker 4 (07:05):
No.
Speaker 2 (07:06):
And honestly, in that situation, you are hurting them by
staying with them because you are staying in a relationship
and they think that they're with someone who loves them
and like, you know, genuinely has interest and you don't.
So if you are worried about hurting him, then don't
stay with him because you're hurting him the most and
you're keeping him from being able to find somebody who
(07:28):
does feel that way. And, you know, I don't know.
I'm a firm believer in that.
Speaker 1 (07:32):
That's the easy part. Here comes the hard part.
Speaker 2 (07:35):
Oh, the breaking up part.
Speaker 1 (07:36):
How do we break up with him? Because I can
do it from the guy's perspective. Here's what guys do.
We just treat you like crap until you dump us
because we don't want to be the bad guy.
Speaker 2 (07:43):
Yeah, it's like a date until you hate him type situation.
Speaker 1 (07:46):
That's exactly what I did with my first wife. And
I'm not proud of it, but I'll own it.
Speaker 2 (07:51):
No, honestly, I've been there. Like where I'm just so
cranky and I treat them... poorly. And then I'm like,
can you just break up with me? I don't want
to do it. Okay.
Speaker 1 (07:58):
So you do the dude thing.
Speaker 2 (07:59):
Well, I've done it. I wouldn't say I do it regularly,
but I've done it before, but also I've, I've been
in a position where, you know, I was dating somebody
and they were such a good person. There was nothing
wrong with them. So good to me, but I just wasn't,
I didn't feel that way.
Speaker 1 (08:14):
You literally just described my first marriage. She's a beautiful human.
Who knows? Uh, you know, she, look, she won because
she lives in Los Gatos with her, boyfriend who's rich
doesn't matter but did win actually we both won yeah
she won for herself was what i meant to say
i have absolutely no complaints my family's fantastic um but
(08:38):
i enlisted myself personally i enlisted professional help i had
a therapist call me i paid him 500 bucks basically
to call me the p word oh my god passive
aggressive yeah that p word and he said man up
man up and just break up with her But how
do we do it gently? Give me some words.
Speaker 2 (08:55):
So the approach that I've taken is I usually invite
them over to my house or I go there. Just
a place where you can obviously leave or, you know,
you don't have to linger for too long. And then
I just was honest. Like, you know, when I was
breaking up with this person, I said, you know what? Hey, like,
this is how I'm feeling. And it was super awful. Like,
(09:18):
I was crying. I was anxious. It didn't feel good.
But I just was honest with them and I told
them how I felt and they took it really well.
Thank God. And then after that, like it felt like
such a weight off of my shoulders. Like it really
did feel better, but it's like, it's going to get
worse before it gets better in just that moment of
(09:40):
your feelings. But I think you just have to do it.
Like I said, like if you really are true in
your feelings about not wanting to hurt them, then yeah,
you kind of just need to like, that talking about
your feelings to the person that you feel them about
is just what you have to do to get through it.
Speaker 1 (09:54):
And being honest about it. And ultimately, I think they
will appreciate your honesty more than anything else.
Speaker 2 (09:59):
I always say, you know, how would you want something
to be said to you? How would you want to
receive this information? And just take it from there, you know?
Speaker 1 (10:06):
How to break up with somebody who really did nothing wrong.
You're just not in love with them. There you go.
Any thoughts on this? The Talkback is open as always,
and we are here live. So It's the little red
microphone if you're streaming Star 101.3 right now.
Speaker 2 (10:18):
Now here's what's trending in the Bay Area and beyond.
Speaker 1 (10:22):
Don't look now, but Pokemon is taking over SF. Thousands
of Pokemon fans are descending into San Francisco this weekend
for the 2026 Pokemon World Championships. Tomorrow through Sunday, streets
are already shut down. Howard completely closed between 3rd and
4th through Tuesday. There will be additional partial closers on 3rd, 4th, Folsom,
(10:44):
and Howard. just, I don't know what to tell you.
This thing is so big that I think, are they
having the actual championship? Is it at Oracle Park? I
got to look. It's either Oracle Park or Chase Center,
but it's just going to be thousands of people walking
around the city staring at their phones. I don't know
how that's different from last Tuesday, but if you're into Pokemon,
(11:07):
this is your weekend. Have the best time. Let's see.
Meta has agreed to a massive teen safety settlement. You
know about this trial that has been going on. They've
agreed to a settlement worth up to about $ 18 billion
over claims that Facebook and Instagram were designed in ways
that encourage addictive use among kids and teens. The deal
includes a default two-hour daily limit for teens, overnight restrictions,
(11:29):
and stronger parental controls. Meta has denied any wrongdoing. And
it's a big coalition of states that this is happening,
and we'll keep you posted as that continues to develop.
The iHeartRadio House of Music presented by Hyundai is happening.
And we're going to talk about that after 8 o'clock.
(11:50):
So be ready for that, especially if you are headed
to the festival. If you want information on that, 1013.com.
And this was interesting. And thank you to Producer Taylor
for the food court Pop-Tarts and Buzzballs. Is this a collab?
It is. It's limited edition Pop-Tart inspired Buzzballs. A sentence
I never thought I'd say.
Speaker 2 (12:10):
I know.
Speaker 1 (12:11):
Frosted s'mores and frosted brown sugar cinnamon buzz balls. 15% alcohol.
You're welcome. Let's finish strong with producer Taylor's daily poll.
Speaker 3 (12:20):
What do you have?
Speaker 2 (12:21):
It is National Lottery Day today. So we're asking if
you win the jackpot, what are you buying? Is it
going to be something luxurious? Maybe a nice vacation? Are
you going to pay off some debt or are you
saving it?
Speaker 1 (12:32):
This reminded me of my favorite commercial for the California lottery.
It's a guy in the grocery store and he had
just won millions and he's I could totally afford all
this cheese. It's Marcus in the morning. It is time
once again for everybody's fave. This is called Second Date Update.
Brought to you by Pomponio Ranch Meats. Pasture raised cows
right here on the San Mateo County coast. It is
the Bay's beef jerky. Get your first order. I'll get
(12:53):
you half off. Use my code at checkout. Marcus50. Pomponioranchmeats.com.
If you're new to the show, maybe you just started listening.
We take this segment and try to bring people together
after a first date. Maybe somebody ghosts. The other person
has no idea why. You call me. We call your date.
I try to get some answers. You get to listen in.
So let's go ahead and bring Ryan on right now. Ryan,
(13:15):
are you there?
Speaker 3 (13:16):
Hey, yeah.
Speaker 1 (13:16):
What's up? Hey, dude. Here to help. Let's talk about
your date. I understand her name's Vanessa, and you guys
went out for drinks, and you live in Oakland.
Speaker 3 (13:26):
We did.
Speaker 1 (13:26):
So tell me all about it. How did it go?
Speaker 3 (13:29):
I mean, it went as well as I could have
possibly expected it to go.
Speaker 1 (13:33):
Okay.
Speaker 3 (13:34):
We, like, shut the bar down. Okay. So we were
we were having a good time. We did not want
the night to end, at least on my end. And
I thought on her end, too.
Speaker 1 (13:44):
OK, anything anything strange happen?
Speaker 3 (13:47):
No, I mean, definitely not weird. The one thing that
happened towards the end of the night is that when
we when the bar was like last call, you got
to get out of here. She called an Uber and
it was like 15 minutes away. And she was like, oh,
I shouldn't have left. I really need to use the restroom.
So I was like, hey, no problem. I actually live
two blocks away. So I was like, that seems no problem.
(14:08):
You know, that seems like a nice gesture. Come on over.
I didn't mean anything by it. You can use the restroom.
That was kind of how it all went down. That's
the only thing that felt a little weird, but she
was only there for like 15 minutes.
Speaker 1 (14:19):
I mean, you got the lady to come back to
your apartment after her first date. You must be a
nice guy.
Speaker 3 (14:24):
Yeah, I thought so.
Speaker 1 (14:27):
All right. Let's see what's going on. Let me call
her really quick. And then we'll see if we can't
get you a second date. Okay, go ahead and mute
your phone.
Speaker 3 (14:35):
All right.
Speaker 1 (14:35):
Here we go.
Speaker 4 (14:38):
Hello?
Speaker 1 (14:43):
Hi, I'm looking for Vanessa. This is she? Vanessa, it's
Marcus calling from Star 101.3. Good morning.
Speaker 2 (14:53):
Oh, good morning.
Speaker 4 (14:55):
Hi.
Speaker 1 (14:56):
How are you?
Speaker 4 (14:57):
I'm good. How are you?
Speaker 1 (14:59):
I'm doing great. Do you listen to the show in
the morning?
Speaker 4 (15:02):
I do, actually. This is so funny.
Speaker 1 (15:04):
Loves it. What do you know about Second Date Update?
Speaker 4 (15:09):
Oh.
Speaker 2 (15:12):
I am familiar with Second Date Update.
Speaker 1 (15:15):
Sweet.
Speaker 2 (15:16):
Am I here on Second Date Update?
Speaker 1 (15:18):
You're not the ghostie. You're the ghoster.
Speaker 3 (15:21):
So. Yeah, okay.
Speaker 1 (15:22):
Assuming. I don't want to be presumptive, but okay. So
Ryan is muted and he's listening and he's just trying
to figure out why you ghosted him. because he really
enjoyed your date is it okay if i bring him
on yeah that's fine perfect ryan.
Speaker 3 (15:38):
Hey hey vanessa hey how are you hey.
Speaker 1 (15:42):
So vanessa i want you to speak as freely as
you can let's talk about ryan like he's not here
okay did you.
Speaker 4 (15:48):
Ghost yes technically i i ghosted okay um But let
me explain myself. So, okay, the date actually went really well.
Speaker 3 (15:58):
I heard.
Speaker 1 (15:59):
We closed the bar down. Right.
Speaker 2 (16:00):
It was a good date for sure. But I had
to really use the bathroom at the end of the night.
Speaker 4 (16:07):
And I was waiting for my Uber.
Speaker 2 (16:08):
And it was still 15 minutes away.
Speaker 4 (16:10):
And Brian offered me to use his restroom because he's
close by.
Speaker 1 (16:15):
Right. he was like, so, and he must be a
good dude because like who goes to a guy's apartment
after a first date? The, you just met to be real.
Speaker 3 (16:23):
He was really sweet.
Speaker 2 (16:24):
Um, so, so, um, that's what we did.
Speaker 4 (16:27):
But then when I was in the bathroom, I noticed
that there was women's perfume on the counter. And then like,
there was just, there was lotion, bobby pins.
Speaker 2 (16:39):
And I was starting to get a little suspicious.
Speaker 4 (16:41):
So I did open a few drawers and there was just,
a ton of women's stuff. So I came out of
the bathroom and I asked Ryan if there was a
woman living with him. And he said, yes, his roommate.
Speaker 2 (16:57):
And that was like very shocking to me.
Speaker 1 (17:00):
Okay.
Speaker 4 (17:01):
I confronted him. I was like, you have a female
roommate and he said he did. And they'd lived together
for about a year and it was totally platonic. And
you know, like he said, they have like opposite schedules
and they barely see each other. But, um, I felt
that should have been disclosed way earlier.
Speaker 1 (17:17):
But wait, wait, why?
Speaker 3 (17:20):
We weren't talking about my roommate or my living situation.
That was not part of our conversation during the date.
Speaker 2 (17:25):
Right, but it's a really big detail.
Speaker 1 (17:28):
Okay.
Speaker 3 (17:30):
I don't actually understand why. I could tell it was
a big deal that night, but I didn't think it
was going to be such a big deal that you
would ghost me because I was explaining to you about
how it's platonic, about how we... are literally just roommates.
I don't even really know her that well.
Speaker 4 (17:45):
Right, but it's unusual for a straight guy to live
with a straight woman, and there's nothing going on.
Speaker 2 (17:51):
It's just odd, and it felt like you.
Speaker 4 (17:52):
Were hiding it.
Speaker 3 (17:54):
Yeah, I definitely wasn't. I probably wouldn't have invited you
back to use the restroom or anything if I was
afraid of you finding out that I lived with a
totally platonic female roommate.
Speaker 2 (18:06):
Well, I don't know.
Speaker 4 (18:08):
If you don't bring it up. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (18:10):
That would feel random to me to just be like, hey,
by the way, I live with a woman. That's weird.
Speaker 4 (18:16):
Well, there's like a tactful way to like incorporate it
into the conversation.
Speaker 2 (18:20):
I'm just saying like.
Speaker 3 (18:22):
Fine. I totally hear your point. But like also how
about the fact that you just went through a stranger's
like house and belongings like you don't know her and
she wasn't there. That's like. Also kind of weird and
kind of invasive. Would you at least agree with that?
Speaker 4 (18:36):
No, I was just investigating.
Speaker 3 (18:38):
I don't get it.
Speaker 1 (18:40):
Investigating. You'd been in my apartment for five minutes.
Speaker 4 (18:44):
So I have dated guys who have lied about girlfriends before. Like, just, like,
putting that on the table. So... I've been burned, so
I'm looking for clues, and I found some.
Speaker 3 (18:55):
That's kind of weird to, like, look for clues in
a stranger's apartment where you're just, like, using the restroom.
You know what I'm saying?
Speaker 4 (19:03):
Right, but none of this would have ever happened if
you had just been up front about the fact that
you have, like, a female roommate.
Speaker 3 (19:09):
You know what I mean? But, like, when? Like, between
do you want to split the nachos and what kind
of music do you like? Like, we had known each
other for, like, an hour.
Speaker 4 (19:18):
It's relevant information.
Speaker 3 (19:20):
You know, I guess it probably would have been relevant
for me to know that you, like, go into people's
houses without warrants and conduct, like, official searches of their belongings.
Speaker 1 (19:30):
A warrant?
Speaker 4 (19:30):
Oh, my God.
Speaker 3 (19:31):
Okay.
Speaker 4 (19:31):
Well, you know what?
Speaker 2 (19:32):
I would have done the same exact thing again.
Speaker 3 (19:35):
Well, I guess that will explain why there will not
be a second date.
Speaker 1 (19:39):
All right.
Speaker 3 (19:40):
Okay.
Speaker 4 (19:40):
Well, it sounds like you're taken by your roommate anyway,
so I think we're good.
Speaker 3 (19:44):
Yeah, nothing to do with the roommate.
Speaker 1 (19:46):
Okay.
Speaker 3 (19:47):
Right.
Speaker 1 (19:47):
Hang on. Hang on. I'm calling it. What?
Speaker 3 (19:50):
Okay.
Speaker 1 (19:50):
That was going nowhere. Second date update. It's Marcus in
the morning, 720. Producer Taylor here as well. Apparently, grandma
cooking is through the roof right now, according to Pinterest.
This is interesting.
Speaker 2 (20:01):
Do you do any?
Speaker 1 (20:02):
You don't do any cooking, right?
Speaker 2 (20:03):
I was actually just thinking about this. I don't even
think I've turned my stove on in like four months.
So that's where we're at right now.
Speaker 1 (20:11):
Taylor exists on takeout from dates.
Speaker 2 (20:14):
Yeah. And whatever you bring.
Speaker 1 (20:16):
What did we have yesterday?
Speaker 3 (20:18):
Meatballs?
Speaker 1 (20:18):
Meatballs.
Speaker 2 (20:19):
And they were so good.
Speaker 1 (20:20):
Yeah. You know why they were good? I put pecorino
in them instead of Parmesan cheese.
Speaker 4 (20:26):
Okay.
Speaker 1 (20:27):
They're the best pecorino on planet Earth. I was in St. Helena,
the Napa Valley Olive Oil Company. Shout out to my guy, Jules.
His family's been making cheeses and olive oils since the 30s.
Speaker 2 (20:38):
That's awesome.
Speaker 1 (20:39):
It's so delicious, but it really took my meatballs to
the next level. This is a weird conversation. Okay, so
grandma cooking. Creating your own spice mixes is up 200%.
Searches for pickling is up 188% year over year. I
(20:59):
know this is a strange topic, but if you can
pickle something, it's glorious.
Speaker 2 (21:05):
Yes. I, it's like a booming biz right now. Pickling stuff.
Like I have a family friend who does pickles. Right.
Shout out.
Speaker 1 (21:14):
She sent us pickles.
Speaker 2 (21:15):
She did. And then I forgot to share them. And
I ate them.
Speaker 1 (21:20):
You ate them all?
Speaker 2 (21:21):
Don't be mad at me. They were really good.
Speaker 4 (21:24):
It's okay.
Speaker 2 (21:24):
She could send us more.
Speaker 1 (21:26):
Gut health is the thing. And when you pickle stuff,
it's good for your gut health.
Speaker 3 (21:29):
Also.
Speaker 2 (21:30):
Is it?
Speaker 4 (21:30):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (21:31):
All the probiotics. There's probiotics in there. And bacteria.
Speaker 2 (21:34):
Do you know how to pickle something? Uh-huh. Have you
pickled before?
Speaker 1 (21:38):
So I pickle red onions. That's what I pickle. And jalapenos. Oh, okay.
That's called one of my favorite Spanish words, escabeche.
Speaker 2 (21:45):
What does it like transform into?
Speaker 1 (21:48):
So what it does is if you have peppers or
if you have onions, it mellows out the flavors.
Speaker 2 (21:54):
Okay.
Speaker 1 (21:55):
But then also makes them a little sour and lovely.
And they're a great foil for, I'll bring it back
full circle, my beef barbacoa.
Speaker 4 (22:04):
Oh, yeah.
Speaker 3 (22:05):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (22:06):
Very delish.
Speaker 1 (22:06):
This is a fun convo, but I am getting hungry.
Speaker 2 (22:09):
See, of course it's a fun convo. Like, you love
chef stuff. You love food. I mean, I'm not surprised.
Speaker 1 (22:15):
The only way this would be better is if we
were talking about snacks.
Speaker 2 (22:18):
No, the only way this would be better is if
we had snacks right in front of us right now.
Speaker 4 (22:21):
Truth.
Speaker 2 (22:21):
And we were eating them.
Speaker 1 (22:22):
So if you're into grandma cooking, man, it's like it's
back in. You're cool. That's the main takeaway. It's time
for good news, baby. Got to mention again, there is
a second chance to win your trip to see Teddy
Swims in Las Vegas. It includes hotel for two nights, airfare,
and a backstage tour, plus some premium seats. If you
(22:44):
hit the contest tab, if you're streaming Star 101.3 right now,
get yourself entered to win. This is a crazy story
out of Foster City, which is making national news as
a kid saved two lives at a pool in Foster
City within the last 48 hours. So his name is Zion.
He just happens to be a senior at the Cal
(23:05):
Poly Maritime Academy. So he's a very strong swimmer. He
was with his girlfriend. He heard screaming coming from a
nearby apartment complex in Foster City. Ran toward the noise,
jumped the fence, dove into the swimming pool. He found
a father floating face down and a 25-year-old, the dad's son,
at the bottom of the pool. I guess the son
(23:26):
didn't know how to swim. Waited too far in. Dad's
trying to save him. He can't swim either. Zion saves
both of them, administers CPR, and they both eventually came to.
First responders credited him for, you know, very, very valuable
minutes that saved lives. Basically, his quick thinking saved an
(23:48):
otherwise terrible outcome. So, Zion, I don't even know you, dude,
but you're my hero today. Nice work. And also being
in the right place at the right time. Wow. That's
my good news. It is Marcus in the morning. It
is time to play the Bay's favorite trivia game called
What You Know About That. It is brought to you
by Cameron's Pub in Half Moon Bay. Best believe I
will be there for karaoke this weekend. Starts at 7 o'clock,
(24:10):
and I keep talking about the wings all week, but
let's not forget about the prime rib sandwich, too. I'm
getting hungry.
Speaker 2 (24:14):
You're making me hungry.
Speaker 3 (24:15):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (24:16):
Say what's up to our contestants this morning. Say what's
up to Tim in Castro Valley. Good morning, Tim.
Speaker 2 (24:20):
Good morning, Marcus.
Speaker 1 (24:21):
What are you doing this morning?
Speaker 3 (24:23):
I just dropped my kiddo off at school. Love it.
Speaker 1 (24:25):
Give me a name.
Speaker 3 (24:26):
Her name's Emerson.
Speaker 1 (24:27):
Love it, man. Welcome to the show. Appreciate you having
us on every morning. Let's say hi to your opponent.
George is in the Richmond district here in San Francisco.
What's going on, George?
Speaker 3 (24:34):
Good morning, Marcus and Taylor.
Speaker 1 (24:36):
Good morning. What do you got going on this morning?
Speaker 3 (24:39):
I'm dropping off my friend Mia to work.
Speaker 1 (24:42):
Okay. Welcome to the show to both of you. But
let's go ahead and get started. Game is super simple.
It's five trivia questions, 50 seconds to answer them all.
Each person is going to be asked separately with their
opponent on hold. Whoever gets the most right answers wins.
And if you don't know an answer, you just yell
out pass. And we'll come back to the question if
we have time. You guys ready?
Speaker 3 (25:01):
Ready.
Speaker 1 (25:02):
Okay, so George goes on hold in the Richmond District.
And we start with Tim in Castro Valley.
Speaker 3 (25:07):
Let's do this.
Speaker 1 (25:09):
Question number one. What is the world's longest river?
Speaker 3 (25:14):
The Nile.
Speaker 1 (25:14):
Which grumpy Sesame Street resident lives in a trash can? Oscar. Oscar.
How many holes are played in an average game of golf? 18.
What car manufacturer produces the Mustang?
Speaker 2 (25:29):
Ford.
Speaker 1 (25:29):
And what is the only country in the world that
doesn't have a rectangular flag? I don't know. That's the
last one. Oh.
Speaker 3 (25:49):
Let's say United Arab Emirates. Okay.
Speaker 1 (25:53):
Very confident. Taylor came in with the right hook. You
see that? In real time. Great job. Hang on the
line for me.
Speaker 3 (25:59):
All right.
Speaker 1 (25:59):
Tim goes on hold in Castro Valley. We pick up
George in the Richmond District here in San Francisco. George,
are you good? Yes, I am.
Speaker 2 (26:06):
Question number one. What is the world's longest river?
Speaker 3 (26:10):
The Ganga River.
Speaker 2 (26:13):
Which grumpy Sesame Street resident lives in a trash can?
How many holes are played in an average game of golf?
Speaker 1 (26:28):
Pass.
Speaker 2 (26:29):
What car manufacturer produces the Mustang?
Speaker 3 (26:34):
Fourth.
Speaker 2 (26:35):
What is the only country in the world that does
not have a rectangular flag? Pass. Back to the first one.
You passed on how many holes are played in an
average game of golf.
Speaker 3 (26:53):
I'm just making a guess.
Speaker 4 (26:57):
Three.
Speaker 1 (26:58):
We are out. Hang on the line for me, George.
All right, Tim comes back in Castro Valley. We'll see
how he did against George in the Richmond district. Question
number one, what is the world's longest river?
Speaker 2 (27:08):
Tim said the Nile. George said the Ganges. The answer
we're looking for was the Nile.
Speaker 1 (27:13):
Which grumpy Sesame Street resident lives in a trash can?
Speaker 2 (27:17):
So Tim said Oscar. George said the Cookie Monster. The
correct answer is Oscar the Grouch.
Speaker 1 (27:23):
How many holes are played in an average game of golf?
Speaker 2 (27:26):
George said that there was three holes played. Tim knew
that it was 18.
Speaker 1 (27:30):
Number four, what car manufacturer produces the Mustang?
Speaker 2 (27:34):
Both of you said Ford, and that is correct.
Speaker 1 (27:36):
And finally, what is the only country in the world
that doesn't have a rectangular flag?
Speaker 2 (27:40):
Tim said United Arab Emirates. The answer we were looking
for was Nepal. That brings our final score four to one.
Tim's our winner.
Speaker 1 (27:48):
I was today years old, you guys. Tim, congratulations.
Speaker 3 (27:51):
Thank you so much.
Speaker 1 (27:52):
Great job, George. We're going to set you up with
a custom bedazzled star sticker. You can stick that wherever
you'd like or gift it to your friend.
Speaker 3 (27:59):
It's up to you.
Speaker 1 (28:00):
Thank you for playing.
Speaker 4 (28:01):
Thank you.
Speaker 1 (28:02):
What are you talking about?
Speaker 2 (28:03):
Play with us again weekday mornings at 8.05 a.m.
Speaker 1 (28:06):
And add the What You Know About That podcast as
a preset on our iHeart app and never miss an episode.
It's Marcus in the morning. Have a great day. We'll
talk to you tomorrow morning.
