DM Dilemma's:
You gave them a car. They keep asking for rides. Now what? We debate whether gifting something big automatically signs you up for more than you intended.

Getting Vulnerable:
It started with an unflattering photo of Marcus—and turned into a conversation about vulnerability. This episode is all about embracing imperfections, laughing at ourselves, and inviting listeners to join us by sharing their own unflattering photos. Bad angles welcome.

What's Trending:
The Powerball jackpot is out of control, Zootopia 2 is dominating the box office (again), and Oreo clearly woke up and chose chaos with eight new flavors. We’re also freaking out over Mariah Carey performing at the 2026 Olympics opening ceremony, celebrating National Chocolate-Covered Anything Day, and unfortunately explaining how Marcus got caught lacking in a photo we posted online. Some episodes just write themselves.

Second Date Update:
After a wine bar date in Palo Alto, Grant felt optimistic. Olivia was stylish, engaged, and genuinely curious about his life. The conversation flowed from travel to pets to stand-up comedy, and everything about the night felt solid. Grant assumed he’d see her again—until he didn’t.

How The MERRY Rule Can Prevent Social Burnout During The Holidays:
Feeling booked, broke, and burnt out this holiday season? Same. This episode dives into the MERRY Rule, a five-step check-in designed to help you avoid festive burnout. From protecting your bank account and social battery to making space for rest and doing what you actually want to do, we unpack how Money, Energy, Return, Recovery, and You can guide better holiday decisions—without turning you into the Grinch.

Good News:
A tiny home made a huge difference. In this episode, we talk about a Missouri-based program that helped a U.S. Navy veteran regain custody of his two-year-old daughter after years of recovery and instability. Once he received stable housing through a veteran-focused nonprofit, everything changed—from reunification with his daughter to building a new career and a supportive community. This is a story about second chances and the impact of safe, permanent housing.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
More variety from the two thousands, the nineties, and today
it's Star one O one three, It's Marcus five point
fifty six. Good morning, it's Tuesday, but Taylor is here.

Speaker 2 (00:08):
Good morning.

Speaker 1 (00:09):
We're having a dilemma in the studio as I'm trying
to decide whether we are going to be posting what
is arguably the worst picture of me ever taken period,
full stop. It's giving Taylor life right now because we
took it at the forty nine er game. I was tailgating.
I didn't realize for the last second that she was
taking selfies of us in our group. I look up,

(00:31):
I'm halfway between a pouring a glass of wine, and
I look drunk, disoriented and homeless. I'm I'm in a
camping chair holding a bottle of wine.

Speaker 2 (00:44):
It's great. It's your contact not.

Speaker 1 (00:46):
Great from my brand, and it's in my new contact
photo for it.

Speaker 2 (00:52):
It's iconic.

Speaker 1 (00:53):
Okay, here's the deal. We can post it if you
let me post the one I showed you.

Speaker 2 (00:58):
No.

Speaker 1 (00:59):
No, I also took a terrible picture of Taylor accidentally,
and that's hard. She photos, well.

Speaker 3 (01:05):
Thank you.

Speaker 2 (01:07):
This is like amazing.

Speaker 1 (01:08):
We could do like we could do a little a
little thing, a little side by side, worst photo ever,
I don't know, and put it on our Instagram.

Speaker 2 (01:16):
It will take a poll, see what the people think.

Speaker 1 (01:18):
I'll do it. If you do it, I don't know.

Speaker 2 (01:22):
I don't want your feelings to.

Speaker 1 (01:23):
Get hurt, but yours has to be all. I don't care.
Don't worry about me. I'm going to take the picture
I took of you, and then I'm gonna blow it
all the way up so Taylor's face is going to
be right there.

Speaker 2 (01:33):
Yeah, I mean, that's what I do with this photo,
right and you look great?

Speaker 1 (01:37):
That look terrible. I know we can't really talk about
it this much and then not post it like we
kind of have to, but we have to decide how. Okay,
all right, this is what we're doing today. Thank you
for joining us. Appreciate it. If you gifted somebody a car,
would you expect rides all the time. It came up
because we got a DM from our guy Greg and Nevada,
who listens every morning. I'm not going to read the
whole thing, but I will paraphrase. Basically, his mom and

(01:59):
stepdad gave him a car, which was dope because he
could stop riding the bus, but then he found out
his stepdad had his license suspended and expected rides whenever,
like literally whenever, and he's like, I couldn't you know.
I got I got school, I got work. He's ready
to give the car back eight hundred, eight hundred and
one oh one three. If you want to check in,
is this appropriate? What are your thoughts? Jennifer's on the

(02:21):
phone in PACIFICA go ahead.

Speaker 4 (02:22):
I've gifted two cars.

Speaker 1 (02:24):
Okay.

Speaker 4 (02:25):
The first person we had to chase down to get
it switched to their name.

Speaker 1 (02:29):
What do you mean by chase down?

Speaker 4 (02:31):
Well, you would think if you get a car, you
would go like straight to DMB oh stuff like that.
You know what I mean?

Speaker 3 (02:38):
Yeah, so that you're not liable.

Speaker 1 (02:40):
So I hear you, Okay, I hear you on that. No,
my my dad gifted my uncle a vehicle and didn't
tell anybody, and he never switched the names, and then
he got an accident and and they called me because
it was in my name. So I feel you, okay.

Speaker 4 (02:54):
So with the second time, it was somebody who was
like really down on their luck, and you know, we
were like, okay, we're going to give you this car
because you know, I wanted to be super helpful at
someone I think of as like a niece.

Speaker 3 (03:05):
Yeah, and really love.

Speaker 4 (03:07):
Her, really care about her. And she turned around within
a couple of weeks, bought a new gene horrible payments
I knew she couldn't made, and gave the car to
her son, who was fifteen years old.

Speaker 1 (03:21):
I mean, maybe there's a reason these people don't have cars.
They can't make good life decisions. Maybe this is maybe
we're hitting the nail on the head here.

Speaker 4 (03:28):
That's what I've learned, That's what I learned from.

Speaker 1 (03:31):
Unfortunately, you didn't always expect rides from them, right, Oh
heck no, no, heck no. It sounds like you don't
even want to be in the car.

Speaker 4 (03:39):
If I give something, If I give something, it's no
longer mine.

Speaker 5 (03:42):
Now.

Speaker 4 (03:43):
When she gave it to her son, I wanted to
take it back.

Speaker 1 (03:45):
I come back, right, but it's no longer yours.

Speaker 4 (03:48):
Right. But yeah, no, when I give, if I loan money,
I counted one and I'll be grateful if it comes back.

Speaker 1 (03:56):
I appreciate you checking in.

Speaker 3 (03:58):
Okay, you can't care margin I.

Speaker 1 (04:00):
Might have just relented to posting the most vulnerable photo
ever of me. I don't like it. I'm not into it.
It's not good for my brand for you to see
this photo. But we're doing it anyway because producer Taylor
says it's the what is it the funniest picture you've
ever seen?

Speaker 5 (04:14):
In me?

Speaker 2 (04:14):
Yes, it's iconic. It's your new contact photo.

Speaker 1 (04:17):
Literally didn't know. We were taking a selfie during tailgating
at the forty nine er game on Sunday. I am
pouring a glass of wine. I'm looking up. I look
like I am drunk and stoned. I'm not. I'm wearing
a beanie, I've got my jersey on a jacket that's
the wrong color, that's tattered, and I'm sitting in a
camping chair. I look homeless. I need a job and

(04:41):
I probably need to go to treatment.

Speaker 6 (04:44):
Yes, photo disoriented, just unwell, and I wasn't.

Speaker 1 (04:49):
Okay, you have to attest to the fact I was
not drunk in that picture.

Speaker 2 (04:52):
No, this was like at the very beginning, I was there.

Speaker 1 (04:57):
It is a terrible picture.

Speaker 2 (05:00):
It's my favorite.

Speaker 1 (05:00):
The only it's apparently now my contact photo and producer
Taylor's phone. Yes, so you can go check that out
on the Instagram stories. On Star one one three FM,
We're also posting it to our Facebook page because I
am also then counterposting a picture of producer Taylor that
is not the most flattering pictures she's ever taken. And
it's tough to catch you in a bad photo. She
photos well, but your picture is nowhere near as adventurous

(05:23):
as mine is.

Speaker 2 (05:24):
This is iconic, my favorite photo.

Speaker 1 (05:27):
If you're listening right now, I would love for you
to participate. It doesn't have to be your worst picture
of all time, but like one from last week or
last month where you're like, oh no, let's all be
vulnerable and brave together.

Speaker 2 (05:38):
Yeah, make Marcus feel better.

Speaker 1 (05:39):
I want to put together a little photo album on
the Star one oh one three fm facebook page. You
can drop your photo in your comments, just your most
vulnerable picture, please, and you can again. You can see
this picture on the Star one three fm Instagram. It'll
disappear in the story, so also on the Facebook page.
Thank you in advance for participating.

Speaker 7 (05:58):
What's trendin on Star What's happening in entertainment news, the
biggest stories of the day, and everything people are talking
about today in the Babe.

Speaker 1 (06:09):
Powerball time Baby. This might actually be too much money
for me. I like Powerball and and Mega millions. When
it's like a few million dollars. You know, Producer Tailor
is here, good morning morning. When it gets to this
one point two five billion dollar business, I start getting paranoid.
Why so much, so much money?

Speaker 2 (06:28):
Yeah, that's true.

Speaker 1 (06:29):
So there was no winner. The next drawing is going
to be one point twenty five billion with a B dollars.
This is one of the largest prizes in the game's history.
Your cash option, if you take the nut, it's five
hundred and seventy two million dollars. Wow, which is that's
a lot at any rate? Good luck. I always say

(06:49):
on this show, if any either one of us wins
the big one, we have to give each other ten
million dollars. I hope you're okay with that. That's fair,
But then I have to play too. I keep forgetting
uh Zutopia if you reclaim the number one spot of
the domestic box office, and they have now crossed one
point one four billion dollars worldwide, making it this year's
second billion dollar movie.

Speaker 2 (07:09):
Nice.

Speaker 1 (07:09):
A lot of the success is what they're having in China,
so there you go. Lots of movie goers there. This
is a tremendous movie like all jokes aside and whatever else.
If you need a movie to take the family to
over the holidays, if you haven't already, definitely z Utopia two.

Speaker 2 (07:24):
Yes, it's such a feel good movie. I cried a little,
she did, she did?

Speaker 1 (07:27):
I fell asleep. Uh, it was a long afternoon, but
the parts that I saw were amazing. That was a
little bit too much truth. We had one of the
stars of the show in studio, Patrick Warburton, who you
may know is Putty from Seinfeld. He was here in studio.
He plays Mayor win Dancer. Such a nice dude. A
little interview clips. Full interview is up if you go
to the Star one oh one three FM Instagram. Oreo

(07:50):
has unveiled eight new treats that are already hitting store shelves.
We have Cakester's Confetti Cake, Oreos, Oreo Finn's Chocolate Grenache,
Oreo Muffins, and Severn new minis varieties. We've got new additions.
We've got fan favorites like Oreo Cookie Dough returning for
a limited time. Why am I talking about cookies because
I can Wow.

Speaker 6 (08:09):
Didn't realize the Oreo demand was so high, so good,
so good.

Speaker 1 (08:14):
Oh, plus they have the sugar free ones now too
for those of us with the diabetes, which I respect
Mariah Carey has. And now she's going to be performing
at the opening ceremony of the twenty twenty six Winter Olympics,
which I thought was pretty cool. This story just got
shared on Instagram. You want to hear my favorite Mariah
Carey song of all time? You're gonna think I'm lame,
but here.

Speaker 8 (08:35):
Not even not even the regular one, but like the
Morales Club mix for nineteen ninety eight.

Speaker 2 (08:42):
You know what the song is about, right.

Speaker 1 (08:44):
Derek Jeter of the New York Yankees All Day. I'm
not saying this isn't my cardio mix, but I'm not
saying it's not. So congratulations. If you love Mariah Carey,
you're going to catch your opening the Winter Olympics in
twenty twenty six, which is cool. Up on the Start
one on one three FM Instagram, so many things. Let's
start with the daily poll. What do you have?

Speaker 6 (09:05):
It is National Chocolate Covered Anything Day, so we're wondering
would you try this chocolate covered item? Bacon, yes, carrot, watermelon?
Or do you fear nothing.

Speaker 1 (09:18):
Like you do them?

Speaker 2 (09:18):
All you do anything.

Speaker 1 (09:19):
Okay, those are the choices that's up in the stories.
Also up in the Instagram stories, arguably the worst picture
I have ever taken, and I got dared to post it,
so I did, And then to make myself feel better,
I had to post a not so flattering photo of
producer Taylor, who you can also follow at Tay Love
with two E's on Instagram. So you have to vote

(09:40):
which one of our photos is worse?

Speaker 2 (09:42):
Yes, and Marcus is taking the cake right now.

Speaker 1 (09:44):
Only because producer Taylor's making votes with her burner accounts
that I'm made. And then if you're on Facebook instead,
I would love you, I would adore you if you
would drop an unflattering picture of yourself that you've taken
him in the comments on the post on the Star
one on one three fm facebook page, And that is

(10:05):
what's trending. Back with second date update, let's just get
right into it. This is our dating segment, so let's
pull on Grant. Good morning, Grant, Hey, good morning guys.
Hey man, I just want to talk about your date
with Olivia before she ghosted, So, like, what do you
guys do for your first date? I understand you met online,
but like what did you do for the first date,

(10:25):
because I'm trying to figure some things out here.

Speaker 5 (10:27):
Yeah, of course, you know. We we hit up a
wine bar in the neighborhood and Pale Alto, and it
was it was a pretty great evening. I thought, you know,
she was very pretty, very stylish, put together everything I love.
We talked about our pets and traveling and our favorite
comedians and stand up specials and stuff, and it was great.

(10:49):
I really thought it was a great date and I
wanted to see her again. And you know, then she
just she just like stopped responding.

Speaker 1 (10:58):
So nothing at all. This is like a full ghost.

Speaker 5 (11:02):
Yeah, a ghost like it goes you know, it was
just yeah, I don't know, it's very hurtful.

Speaker 1 (11:07):
You know. Sure, I've got Grant on the phoney's standing
by about to call his date Olivia. So very simple
wine date in Palo Alto, but she has ghosted, is
that right, Grant? Yeah? Yeah, okay, and your estimation the
date went fine, like good times.

Speaker 5 (11:23):
I thought it went great. I mean, yeah, we seem
to have good conversation and you know connection, and yeah,
I thought it was a great date.

Speaker 1 (11:30):
Okay, go ahead and give her a call. Go ahead
and meet your phone bud. Here we go.

Speaker 5 (11:34):
You got got it?

Speaker 1 (11:45):
Well? Is this Olivia? Olivia? This is Marcus from Star
one O one three.

Speaker 3 (11:52):
From where?

Speaker 1 (11:53):
Sorry? I do a radio show for iHeartRadio on one
on one point three in San Francisco. I wonder if
you got a second to be on the show.

Speaker 3 (12:02):
Okay, sure, I don't know what is this show?

Speaker 1 (12:05):
Sorry? So we do a segment on the show called
second Date Update, And I got sent your phone number
by a guy who's been on a day with you recently,
said he had the best time. Feels like he's getting ghosted,
and we're just trying to figure out did my guy
screw up? Did something happen? Maybe you've just been busy.
Do you have a second to talk about your day

(12:26):
with Grant?

Speaker 3 (12:28):
Sure?

Speaker 1 (12:29):
Did you ghost and did something go wrong? What happened?

Speaker 3 (12:33):
I don't know about ghosting, but I don't know what
to say. I mean, it was an okay date.

Speaker 1 (12:38):
Okay date that was gonna be my question? Was it
a good date? An okay date? Just at first? You said?

Speaker 3 (12:43):
Well, at first I thought yeah, at first it felt
like it was going really well. Grant came off pretty
put together. But sudden, you know, the little lad started
kind of popping up.

Speaker 1 (12:55):
Okay, what happened?

Speaker 3 (12:58):
Well, early in the night, he referred to his apartment
as the pod, and I kind of thought he was kidding,
you know, like just that that's what he calls his apartment,
but he wasn't. He explained that he lives in like
a hyper efficient minimalist pod because unused space is wasted energy.

(13:21):
So that was sort of interesting and sure what to
make of that? And then I guess I can only
say that he sort of like moved into what I
call like a lecture mode where he spent almost ten
minutes explaining something that he calls the Alpha seating strategy

(13:44):
strategy To me, I've never heard of it before. Basically,
he was talking about how where you sit on a
state affect attraction and power dynamics. And then like half
thru way through his explanation, he stood up and me
to switch cars with him so that I would be
angled better towards the room.

Speaker 1 (14:05):
That's what he said. Yeah, interesting, and did you did?

Speaker 3 (14:10):
You did? Like I wanted to keep things moving, Yeah,
but it was weird. I felt really uncomfortable. Sure, so
that was interesting and.

Speaker 1 (14:19):
Then more.

Speaker 3 (14:22):
Yeah, but that's when things really fell apart. When the
check shut up, Grant reached into his jacket and he
just starts pulling out all of this, like loose change
to tip, like coins just kind of keep on coming,
and a few roll on the floor and he's just

(14:42):
gathering them up and then placed them on the check presenter.

Speaker 1 (14:46):
Okay, it was a lot. I'm okay, I'm getting a
visual now. So yeah, Olivia. Part of the segment is
Grant is actually listening in. We're trying to use this
as a teachable moment. I'd like to bring him on
so we can discuss if that's okay with you. Sure, sure, Grant,
are you there right? Hello, Yeah, I'm here. This is

(15:06):
a lot of stuff, man.

Speaker 5 (15:10):
Yeah, you know, listening to Olivia talk about this stuff,
I didn't think it was a big issue at the time.
And you know, I'm very true to who I am.
You know, I live in a pod because you know I'm.

Speaker 1 (15:23):
A minimal minimalist. Is the actual pod.

Speaker 5 (15:25):
It's like the size of like you know, like a
walking closet i'd say, you know, with the with the
with a little bed and and very minimal things. And
that's that's how I live.

Speaker 1 (15:36):
But also deal with change.

Speaker 5 (15:39):
Well, you know, I'm gonna say change is everywhere in
our life right now, on the world climate, you know, and.

Speaker 1 (15:44):
No, no, I mean I'm sorry.

Speaker 5 (15:46):
Coins Yeah yeah, yeah, changes coins in my in my vision,
you know, the cash currency is out there and we
have to spread it around because you know, what are
we going to do with it?

Speaker 1 (15:59):
You know?

Speaker 5 (15:59):
And it tips seems appropriate with with a change, you know,
I don't know what else to do with it besides
paid forward.

Speaker 1 (16:05):
Okay, what about this alpha seating strategy?

Speaker 5 (16:08):
You know, it's it's more about posture and energy. I'm
just trying to make the date go better for both
of us, and you know where Olivia was seated, it
just wasn't wasn't working for me, and I needed. I
need to have better angles because when you have a
when you have a correct angle, there's a better connection
for everyone.

Speaker 1 (16:26):
Olivia, do you so? I ask, are you resonating with
all of this now that we have some explanations or not?

Speaker 3 (16:34):
No, it just felt a lot less like a date
and more like being coached and in corrected all night.
So it's not you weren't rude or anything, but like
I just I didn't feel relaxed or myself or anything.

Speaker 1 (16:49):
Okay, our hang on, hang on, there were a lot
of moving parts, sir. Second date updates, The holidays are
here and every weekend is passed. How do you prevent
social burnout during the holidays? If you have a thought
on this eight hundred, eight hundred and one oh one three,
may I present what they call the merry rule? Now,

(17:09):
Producer Taylor is here. We must have found this on
TikTok because it's not twenty twenty five. If there is
an acute acronym. Here's how the marry rule works. Then
next time you get invited to something, and may I
ask Producer Taylor. You're very social? Do you ever get
overwhelmed with the number of invites?

Speaker 3 (17:24):
Oh?

Speaker 2 (17:24):
Absolutely, I am right now, okay.

Speaker 1 (17:26):
Because as you get older, like literally, it takes an
act of congress for me and my wife to get
off the couch and go somewhere.

Speaker 2 (17:33):
I have to mentally prepare for these things sometimes.

Speaker 1 (17:35):
Okay. So the number one thing, this is the filter
you want to run through the merry rule. Number one money,
Can I even afford this activity?

Speaker 2 (17:42):
Probably not given that the holidays?

Speaker 5 (17:44):
Right?

Speaker 1 (17:46):
Number two energy? Ask yourself check your own energy levels.
Do you have the energy? Are you drained? And if
you don't, consider saying no? The power of no is epic.
Literally the marriage the merry rule. The next is return.
Are you going to get out of it what you

(18:06):
put in? As I always say, does it fill your cup?

Speaker 2 (18:08):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (18:09):
I have a friend who has a saying if it
doesn't fill my cup or fill my wallet, I'm not
doing it. Oh, she'll go out and get paid, or
she'll go out and fill her own cup. Other than that,
I'm out.

Speaker 2 (18:21):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (18:21):
The next r is recovery. Will you have enough time
to listen to your body to recover from whatever this
activity that you couldn't afford in the first place that's
robbing your energy is? And finally, it's all about you, baby.
Have you thought about how you want to spend your
holiday season? You don't have to agree to plans you
won't enjoy. Even though it might be hard to say no,

(18:42):
Let's go back to the power of no, say it
with me.

Speaker 2 (18:45):
I don't think my mom's gonna like this one. She's
gonna be like, what's your ex?

Speaker 1 (18:49):
So you try to cancel a your mom's party this week? Oh? Sorry? Mom?
The merry rule during the holidays to prevent and burn out.
There you go.

Speaker 7 (18:59):
It's time for good news. Sometimes all you need is
one a good thought to make it a great day.

Speaker 2 (19:06):
So let's do this.

Speaker 7 (19:07):
It's good news on STARBEA one three, give.

Speaker 1 (19:12):
You good news twice in the morning, seven forty. Just
want to make you smile on your way to work
or drop off whatever you're doing. Shout outs if you're
in carpool right now. Appreciate you waking up with us.
This story will take you through a cavalcade of emotions
because it ends amazingly. It starts very sad, I will
warn you, but it's proof that every once in a

(19:32):
while we all just need a little leg up, just
a little help. It's a story of a Navy veteran
who regained custody of his two year old daughter thanks
to the gift of a tiny home and so his
name is Tim. He lost his daughter, Majesty when she
was two years old. She had to go into foster
care because he did not have a permanent address, which

(19:54):
was required by family court. The reason he didn't have
a permanent address because he had spent two years of
recovery in a residential treatment program that did not accommodate kids.
So he lost his daughter to the system. That's the
sad part. Now everything changed for him when he connected
with a program manager for an organization called Veterans Community Project.

(20:16):
Within days, he'd moved into a tiny home. Within they
had a little village of tiny homes. And then because
of that, because of having an address, he received full
custody of his little baby girl, and they are now
in a unit designed for parents and kids. He says
he's loving the community and they've been very welcoming. It
gets better. Since moving into the village, Tim has been

(20:39):
a licensed drug counselor and now works in Kansas City.
He said the stability of having a permanent address in
community support has helped him rebuild his life. He is
grateful for the opportunity to be a father again. I
can't even imagine losing my little girl. This is an
amazing story. It's time to play the favorite trivia game
called what You Know About That? Go to the phones

(21:01):
